1. Orbital selectivity versus Pomeranchuk instability in the iron-chalcogenide superconductors: A two-loop renormalization group study

Abstract

We perform a two-loop renormalization group (RG) analysis of a 2D effective multiband model, which is relevant for describing the low-energy properties of some iron-chalcogenide superconducting materials. Crucial ingredients in this analysis are the calculation of higher-order contributions in the RG scheme that go beyond the widely-used parquet approximation and the consequent inclusion of nontrivial self-energy effects of the model that yield an anisotropic renormalization of the quasiparticle weight in the system. The motivation of our work is the experimental discovery by Sprau et al. (2017) that orbitally-selective renormalization of the quasiparticle weight in the Hund's metal phase at moderate temperatures underpins the highly unusual gap in the superconducting phase of the FeSe compound at lower temperatures. One prediction we arrive here is that the underlying origin of nematicity in these systems may indeed come from orbital-selectivity, instead of a Pomeranchuk instability in the $d_{\pm}$ channel. This orbital selectivity is driven by the presence of stripe-type antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the model. Therefore, we argue that the present RG results may provide a scenario from a weak-to-moderate coupling perspective, in which the role of orbital selectivity to describe the physical properties of some iron-chalcogenide superconductors is emphasized., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

However, prognostic factors that may assist patient selection are still controversial. Several pathologic features, such as the growth pattern (GP), associated with prognosis in colorectal cancer liver metastases, were never investigated in GCLM. Our principal aim was to assess if the GP has prognostic impact on GCLM.Patients and Methods: Review of the clinical and pathological characteristics of 19 consecutive patients submitted to surgical resection of GCLM with curative intent at our department. Major potential prognostic factors considered were patients’ gender, age, timing and extent of Hp, postoperative course, as well as histopathological characteristics of primary and secondary tumors.Results: Major morbidity occurred in four patients, mortality in one. Median and 5-year overall survival were 17 months and 26.7%, respectively. Ten patients developed recurrent disease and two patients survived more than 10 years. Factors independently associated with overall survival were the absence of major morbidity, distal location of the primary tumor, and desmoplastic GP (p< 0.05).Conclusion: The selection of patients is crucial for the improvement of survival rates of GCLM. Consequently, we demonstrate for the first time that the desmoplastic GP of GCLM is associated with improved outcomes, prompting further research on tumor–host interactions.Keywords: liver metastases, gastric carcinoma, hepatectomy, growth pattern, prognosis

Abstract

Surface properties of carbon nanotubes in electrochemical sensors can be dramatically altered depending on chemical groups and structural defects present on the surface. The effect of oxidation on structural integrity of multiwalled carbon nanotubes through acidic (nitric/sulfuric acids) and basic (sodium hydroxide) agents has been studied. Chemical modifications of carbon nanotubes structures were evaluated by Raman, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electronic microscopy. Furthermore, these materials were used to construct sensors for electrochemical determination of pesticide methyl parathion (MP). Under optimized conditions, a calibration curve was obtained for MP determination employing a glassy carbon electrode modified with acidic treated and basic treated carbon nanotubes which showed a linear response ranging from 1.0 x 10.sup.-7 to 3.4 x 10.sup.-5 M with limits of detection of 3.3 x 10.sup.-8 and 3.5 x10.sup.-8 M, respectively. 5. The co-evolution of societal issues, technologies and industry regimes : three case studies of the American automobile industry

Abstract

This thesis contributes to closing a gap in the field of science, technology and innovation (STI) policy research: despite many theoretical advances in the field, we still do not know why some urgent societal issues (or ‘challenges') remain unaddressed, notwithstanding the technological advances that could potentially address them. In particular, radical technological innovations – innovations that depart from the established technological trajectory – would offer greatest potential to address societal challenges. While the source of radical innovations is often new entrepreneurial firms, established firms (‘incumbents') are likely to play an important role in developing them because of the vast resources and complementary assets they possess. Incumbents however, face few immediate incentives to develop radical innovations in response to societal challenges. The analytical puzzle of this thesis is thus to explain how, when, and why industries change (or not) their strategies (in particular, their technological strategy) in order to address a societal problem. This puzzle is disentangled into interrelated research questions: A) How do societal issue­‐related pressures (on the incumbent industry) from different domains (namely, civil society, science, political arena, economy) evolve? B) How does the incumbent industry respond to changing pressures around societal issues, in terms of technological, political, cultural and economic strategies? C) In particular, when and why do industry actors decide to develop substantive technological responses? To answer these questions, the thesis develops a new analytical perspective that combines insights from (a) issue life­‐cycle and issue attention cycle theories (from the Business & Society field) with (b) the so­‐called ‘Triple Embeddedness Framework' and (c) concepts from business strategies, innovation management, corporate political strategies, and technology policy. This novel perspective represents an ideal­‐typical model of issue evolution (‘issue life ­‐cycle'). The model, which I call the Dialectic Issue Life­‐Cycle (DILC) model, is applied to three case studies of the American automobile industry's responses to various societal problems (local air pollution, auto and highway safety, and climate change). Combining qualitative and quantitative research methods in an original way, the case studies aim not only to investigate the validity of the framework, which also provides conceptual answers to the research questions, but also to further refine it and nuance the conceptual answers. By explaining how incumbent industry actors respond to societal challenges, this thesis ultimately contributes to the practical policy debate of how incumbents can be stimulated to develop radical innovations that help address societal challenges.

6. Transformative investment: New rules for investing in sustainability transitions

Abstract

Closing the financial gap for promoting systemic socio-economic transformations to achieve sustainability requires both a substantial increase in investment levels and a qualitative change in investment strategies. In this Perspective, we elaborate on this claim and discuss why existing investment approaches that aim to make positive contributions to sustainability are unlikely to foster the systemic transformations needed for sustainability. Qualitative change means changing the current rules that guide investment practices and we outline a new set of rules that should guide transformative investment. These rules are based on the well-established socio-technical sustainability transition theory and the recent development of a theory of deep transitions. We explain why these transformative investment rules offer a promising alternative base for assessing investment opportunities and monitoring progress toward the multi-system changes required to achieve a socially just deep transition to sustainability.

Abstract

O presente artigo tem como principal objetivo discutir as oportunidades e desafios para o desenvolvimento de uma política de inovação orientada a missões baseada nos Objetivos do Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS), tendo como foco a experiência recente da Diretoria de Tecnologia da Fundação Carlos Chagas de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ). Para tanto, será feita uma revisão bibliográfica acerca do papel das agências de inovação e das políticas de inovação orientadas a missões. A parte empírica do artigo será baseada em uma pesquisa documental, bem como no Planejamento Estratégico feito para a Diretoria da Tecnologia para o triênio 2019-2021. As principais conclusões apontam que: (a) o Estado do Rio de Janeiro possui desafios socioeconômicos possíveis de embasarem uma estratégia de inovação voltada para a solução de problemas; (b) a fragmentação do cenário institucional do estado se coloca não apenas como um desafio para a elaboração de políticas de inovação orientadas a missões, mas também como oportunidade; (c) a complexidade dos desafios societais porém dificulta a formulação e implantação destas políticas; e (d) a construção de indicadores e métricas para mensurar o impacto de tais políticas é bastante desafiadora.

Abstract

Domestic sheep and their wild relatives harbor substantial genetic variants that can form the backbone of molecular breeding, but their genome landscapes remain understudied. Here, we present a comprehensive genome resource for wild ovine species, landraces and improved breeds of domestic sheep, comprising high-coverage (∼16.10×) whole genomes of 810 samples from 7 wild species and 158 diverse domestic populations. We detected, in total, ∼121.2 million single nucleotide polymorphisms, ∼61 million of which are novel. Some display significant (P < 0.001) differences in frequency between wild and domestic species, or are private to continent-wide or individual sheep populations. Retained or introgressed wild gene variants in domestic populations have contributed to local adaptation, such as the variation in the HBB associated with plateau adaptation. We identified novel and previously reported targets of selection on morphological and agronomic traits such as stature, horn, tail configuration, and wool fineness. We explored the genetic basis of wool fineness and unveiled a novel mutation (chr25: T7,068,586C) in the 3′-UTR of IRF2BP2 as plausible causal variant for fleece fiber diameter. We reconstructed prehistorical migrations from the Near Eastern domestication center to South-and-Southeast Asia and found two main waves of migrations across the Eurasian Steppe and the Iranian Plateau in the Early and Late Bronze Ages. Our findings refine our understanding of genome variation as shaped by continental migrations, introgression, adaptation, and selection of sheep.

Abstract

Soot emission has been the focus of numerous studies due to the numerous applications in industry, as well as the harmful effects caused to the environment. Thus, the purpose of this work is to analyze the soot formation in a flat flame burner using premixed compressed natural gas and air, where these quasi-adiabatic flames have one-dimensional characteristics. The measurements were performed applying the light extinction technique. The air/fuel equivalence ratiowas varied to assess the soot volume fractions for different flame configurations. Soot production along the flamewas also analyzed by measurements at different heights in relation to the burner surface. Results indicate that soot volume fraction increases with the equivalence ratio. The higher regions of the flamewere analyzed in order to map the soot distribution on these flames. The results are incorporated into the experimental database for measurement techniques calibration and for computational models validation of soot formation in methane premixed laminar flames, where the equivalence ratio ranging from 1.5 up to 8.

Abstract

This paper analyses recent industrial policy plans made by five leading countries: China, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom and United States. This is done through the analysis of policy documents, using an original framework. Our analysis reveals that these policies have two main motivations. First, the acknowledgement of new technological opportunities and challenges, that allow not only for higher growth rates and competitiveness, but also for addressing ‘societal challenges’ (persistent socio-environmental problems). Second, the growing understanding that, because of the increasing complexity of innovation, private sector efforts alone are not enough, and a higher level of convergence between actors and institutions is needed. We also identify that the policy structures and proposed instruments of these strategies are quite conventional, which contrasts with the rhetoric of these policies. This reveals that the ‘resurgence’ of industrial policies is yet not a return to the ‘old’ policies of the twentieth century, but a new breed, which is much more cautious of interfering with market mechanisms.

Abstract

Innovation is crucial for development. A set of institutional capacities and coordinated actions between the public and private sectors are required to drive large mission-oriented innovation policies (MOIPs) to address priority issues and set a direction for the path of development. This work identifies what restrictions exist in institutional and policy capacities that hinder the design and implementation of MOPs in Chile. This work is based on a case study design. The study analyzes the design and implementation of two strategic programs for innovation and development in the solar energy and mining sectors. The study showed that the capacities of the programs analyzed were evident in the construction of a shared vision and the identification of innovation-led solutions for the development of the two sectors, but the lack of leadership from the government hinders the implementation of the programs, particularly because of the lack of coordination between government agencies and ministries for budget allocation and strategy definition.

También identificamos que la estructura de las políticas y las herramientas propuestas en estas estrategias son bastante convencionales, lo cual contrasta con la retórica de estas políticas. Esto revela que el ‘resurgimiento’ de políticas industriales no es un retorno a las políticas ‘antiguas’ del siglo veinte, sino que es un nuevo tipo, mucho más cuidadoso de no interferir con los mecanismos de mercado. Este artigo analisa recentes planos de política industrial de cinco países líderes: China, Alemanha, Japão, Reino Unido e Estados Unidos. Isso é feito através da análise de documentos de política, usando um framework de análise original. Nossa análise revela que essas políticas possuem duas principais motivações. Primeiro, o reconhecimento de novas oportunidades e desafios tecnológicos, que permitem não apenas taxas de crescimento e competitividade maiores, mas também a abordagem de ‘desafios sociais’ (problemas socio-ambientais persistentes). Abstract

Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) face the challenge of finding new growth engines that allow them to achieve and sustain high levels of economic and social development in the long term. Social development implies that the objective is not to grow for growths sake, but to achieve a certain type of growth that goes in a certain direction, that ensures improvements in the standard and quality of life of people. In this context, mission-oriented policies can be key to directing investment in innovation toward solving the main challenges that countries face. Mission-oriented policies have been implemented in some LAC countries, obtaining different results and lessons learned. This document conceptualizes and characterizes mission-oriented innovation policies and offers criteria to select missions and challenges. It presents the key results and lessons from six case studies, highlighting their dynamics of implementation and outcomes. Finally, it provides conclusions and recommendations for policymakers.

25. The resurgence of industrial policies in the age of advanced manufacturing: an international comparison of industrial policy documents

Abstract

This paper analyses recent industrial policy plans made by five leading countries: China, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom and United States. This is done through the analysis of policy documents, using an original framework. Our analysis reveals that these policies have two main motivations. First, the acknowledgement of new technological opportunities and challenges, that allow not only for higher growth rates and competitiveness, but also for addressing ‘societal challenges’ (persistent socio-environmental problems). Second, the growing understanding that, because of the increasing complexity of innovation, private sector efforts alone are not enough, and a higher level of convergence between actors and institutions is needed. We also identify that the policy structures and proposed instruments of these strategies are quite conventional, which contrasts with the rhetoric of these policies. This reveals that the ‘resurgence’ of industrial policies is yet not a return to the ‘old’ policies of the twentieth century, but a new breed, which is much more cautious of interfering with market mechanisms.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Biodiversity screens and phylogenetic studies are dependent on reliable DNA sequences in public databases. Biological collections possess vouchered specimens with a traceable history. Therefore, DNA sequencing of samples available at institutional collections can greatly contribute to taxonomy, and studies on evolution and biodiversity. METHODS: We sequenced part of the glycosomal glyceraldehyde phosphate dehydrogenase (gGAPDH) and the SSU rRNA (V7/V8) genes from 102 trypanosomatid cultures, which are available on request at www.colprot.fiocruz.br. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this work was to use phylogenetic inferences, using the obtained DNA sequences and those from representatives of all Trypanosomatidae genera, to generate phylogenetic trees that can simplify new isolates screenings. FINDINGS: A DNA sequence is provided for the first time for several isolates, the phylogenetic analysis allowed the classification or reclassification of several specimens, identification of candidates for new genera and species, as well as the taxonomic validation of several deposits. MAIN CONCLUSIONS: This survey aimed at presenting a list of validated species and their associated DNA sequences combined with a short historical overview of each isolate, which can support taxonomic and biodiversity research and promote culture collections.

Abstract

Contemporary societies are more and more culturally diverse, largely due to immigration. At the same time anti-immigrant attitudes are arising and right-wing populist parties are gaining support. Uncovering the multiple reasons that explain the raise of intolerance is a major challenge. This chapter introduces multilevel research examining the interplay of individual and contextual accounts of anti-immigration attitudes and radical right-wing voting. This approach allows examining how individuals’ attitudes are shaped by the socio-structural (e.g., immigrant ratio) and normative contexts (e.g., prevailing values) in which they develop, over and above the individual-level determinants of these attitudes (e.g., threat perceptions, personal experiences with immigrants, ideological orientations such as national attachment). The development of large-scale international social surveys has enabled comparative research between and within nations, that takes into account the impact of contextual factors on individual-level processes. Moreover, the necessary multilevel research designs can now be implemented with a number of statistical software packages. Our recent research conducted in Switzerland—a country with large immigrant presence—is presented to exemplify this research approach.

Abstract

This paper uses the Dialectic Issue LifeCycle-model (DILC-model) to analyze the co-evolution of the climate change problem and strategic responses from the American car industry. The longitudinal and multi-dimensional analysis investigates the dynamics of the climate change problem in terms of socio-political mobilization by social movements, scientists, wider publics and policymakers. It also analyses how U.S. automakers responded to mounting pressures with socio-political, economic and innovation strategies oriented towards low-carbon propulsion technologies. We use a mixed methodology with a quantitative analysis of various time-series and an in-depth qualitative case study, which traces interactions between problem-related pressures and industry responses. We conclude that U.S. automakers are slowly reorienting towards low-carbon technologies, but due to weakening pressures have not yet fully committed to comprehensive development and marketing. The paper not only applies the DILC-model, but also proposes three elaborations: (a) the continued diversity of technical solutions, and ‘ups and downs’ in future expectations, creates uncertainty which delays strategic reorientation; (b) firms may develop radical innovations for political and social purposes in early phases of the model; (c) issue lifecycles are also shaped by external influences from other problems and contexts.

Abstract

Abstract Background The recently constructed river buffalo whole-genome radiation hybrid panel (BBURH5000) has already been used to generate preliminary radiation hybrid (RH) maps for several chromosomes, and buffalo-bovine comparative chromosome maps have been constructed. Here, we present the first-generation whole genome RH map (WG-RH) of the river buffalo generated from cattle-derived markers. The RH maps aligned to bovine genome sequence assembly Btau_4.0, providing valuable comparative mapping information for both species. Results A total of 3990 markers were typed on the BBURH5000 panel, of which 3072 were cattle derived SNPs. The remaining 918 were classified as cattle sequence tagged site (STS), including coding genes, ESTs, and microsatellites. Average retention frequency per chromosome was 27.3% calculated with 3093 scorable markers distributed in 43 linkage groups covering all autosomes (24) and the X chromosomes at a LOD ≥ 8. The estimated total length of the WG-RH map is 36,933 cR5000. Fewer than 15% of the markers (472) could not be placed within any linkage group at a LOD score ≥ 8. Linkage group order for each chromosome was determined by incorporation of markers previously assigned by FISH and by alignment with the bovine genome sequence assembly (Btau_4.0). Conclusion We obtained radiation hybrid chromosome maps for the entire river buffalo genome based on cattle-derived markers. The alignments of our RH maps to the current bovine genome sequence assembly (Btau_4.0) indicate regions of possible rearrangements between the chromosomes of both species. The river buffalo represents an important agricultural species whose genetic improvement has lagged behind other species due to limited prior genomic characterization. We present the first-generation RH map which provides a more extensive resource for positional candidate cloning of genes associated with complex traits and also for large-scale physical mapping of the river buffalo genome.
