The support provided by parents plays a relevant role in the life satisfaction (LS) of young people, as well as in their level of psychological distress (PD), which are among the important mediators of their well-being. Family structure has also been identified as a protective or risk factor. Hence, the present study provides a more complex analysis of young people’s LS, considering the type of family cohabitation (based on parental presence), the personal conditions of the young people (PS), and their perception of the context (social support; SP). A cross-sectional design was used, and 557 young people, with a mean age of 20.68 (SD = 2.23), 50.8% women, 60.7% students, participated. Their levels of psychological distress, perceived social support, life satisfaction, and parental cohabitation were assessed. A mediation and a moderated-mediation model were used. Young people living in a biparental family reveal higher levels of LS and lower levels of PS. A partial mediation was found in the effect of SP on the relation between PS and LS. The moderated-mediation model tested showed that the indirect effects on the paths PS–SP and SP–LS were not significant by the type of parental family cohabitation. Several implications regarding family structure on young people’s LS are discussed.

IntroductionSuicide is a public health problem worldwide, being the fourth leading cause of death in young adult population (15-29 years). Therefore, it is important to identify its risk and protective factors, and how they interact to develop more effective interventions. The present study aims to analyze the relation between depressive symptoms, hopelessness (risk factors) with reasons for living (protective factors) and suicidal ideation in young adults with and without previous suicide attempts.MethodsA sample of 845 Portuguese young adults answered an online form which assessed suicidal ideation, hopelessness, depressive symptoms, and reasons for living. Mean comparisons, correlations, and moderated mediation analysis were computed.ResultsIndividuals with a history of suicide attempt showed higher mean levels in risk factors, compared to individuals without suicide attempt. When no history of suicide attempt was present, ideation was positively and significantly correlated to depression and hopelessness, and negatively correlated to the reasons for living. Higher levels of depressive symptomatology predict lower levels of reasons for living. Mediation and moderation relations were assessed in a model and the history of suicide attempts showed a relevant role.ConclusionsThe evidence found in this study reinforce that reasons for living may play a preponderant role in suicidal ideation, that is as a negative mediator and therefore it can act as a protective factor.

Introdução: As infeções associadas aos cuidados de saúde são uma causa importante de morbimortalidade na população pediátrica, representando um problema crescente nos serviços de cuidados intensivos. Contudo, existem poucos estudos que caracterizam a realidade destas infeções na população pediátrica portuguesa. Este estudo pretendeu avaliar a sua prevalência num serviço de cuidados intensivos pediátrico português, identificando os microrganismos mais frequentes e o respetivo perfil de resistência aos antibióticos. Métodos: Estudo de coorte retrospetivo que incluiu os doentes admitidos num serviço de cuidados intensivos pediátrico entre 1 de janeiro de 2014 e 31 de dezembro de 2023, com diagnóstico de infeções associadas aos cuidados de saúde durante o internamento. Resultados: Identificaram-se 248 casos, correspondendo a uma prevalência de 6,3%, a maioria em lactentes. As infeções mais frequentes foram pneumonia (45,2%) e bacteriemia (14,5%), sendo os agentes infeciosos mais comuns os Gram negativos, nomeadamente a Escherichia coli, a Pseudomonas aeruginosa e a Klebsiella pneumoniae. Observou-se um aumento global das resistências antibióticas nos últimos cinco anos (2019 - 2023). A taxa de infeção por bactérias produtoras de ESBL, MRSA e ERC foi, respetivamente, 8,5%, 1,6% e 0,4%, superior nos anos 2019 - 2023. Houve 45 colonizações em 41 doentes (num total de 97 pesquisas realizadas): 40 a ESBL e 5 a ERC (sem colonizações por MRSA). A sépsis ocorreu em 29,8% casos e a mortalidade foi de 11,7% (4,0% devido à IACS). A exposição a tubo endotraqueal e a ventilação invasiva de longa duração associaram-se a maior probabilidade de desenvolver pneumonia (OR = 2,5; IC 95%, 1,1 a 5,9; p = 0,03; e OR = 1,9; IC 95%, 1,1 a 3,4; p = 0,011; respetivamente). Conclusão: É fundamental implementar estratégias eficazes para prevenir e controlar a disseminação das bactérias resistentes, assegurando a eficácia das terapêuticas atuais, a segurança dos doentes e a proteção da saúde pública.

The Volunteer Functions Inventory (VFI) is an instrument widely used to assess volunteers’ motivation based on the Functionalist Model of Omoto and Snyder. It assesses six factors that reflect several motivational functions. The VFI has been translated into various languages and validated in different cultural contexts, but some studies have reported different factor structures (e.g., five or four factors). In the Portuguese context, previous studies have also shown inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to adapt and validate the VFI for Portuguese volunteers, testing several alternative models (nine models) using confirmatory factor analysis. The sample comprised 468 volunteers (76.3% women), aged from 13 to 81 years (M = 36.66, SD = 14.93). The results support the original interrelated six-factor model as the best-fitting one. The VFI showed good internal consistency and convergent validity. Significant correlations were found between the VFI factors, organizational commitment, and volunteers’ satisfaction. Overall, the six-factor VFI is a valid and reliable tool for measuring the motivational functions of Portuguese volunteers, with implications for practice and research in the volunteering field.

O programa de Formação e Apoio Familiar (FAF) é uma intervenção desenhada com a finalidade de promover a parentalidade positiva e prevenir o maltrato infantil. Este estudo pretende descrever alguns dados preliminares da sua implementação com famílias em risco psicossocial da Ilha da Boavista, Cabo Verde, e analisar se existe ou não uma melhoria nos domínios das competências parentais e da qualidade de vida infantil. O FAF foi dinamizado em 12 sessões grupais, com uma metodologia experiencial e participativa, numa periocidade semanal, durante quatro meses. Participaram 66 pais, maioritariamente mães (85%), com idades entre os 26 e os 56 anos (M = 35.53; DP = 7.27), distribuídos em dois grupos (de intervenção e de controlo). A avaliação foi realizada no pré e pós-teste. O grupo de intervenção melhorou significativamente as suas pontuações após a intervenção na perceção da eficácia, da satisfação parental e na qualidade de vida das crianças, com um tamanho de efeito moderado. O grupo de controlo não apresentou diferenças significativas entre momentos. O FAF é um programa de intervenção para o desenvolvimento da parentalidade positiva, que promove os sentimentos de eficácia parental e a satisfação parental, o que consequentemente se traduz também em melhores resultados para o desenvolvimento e bem-estar infantil nas famílias em risco psicossocial.

Solar radiation and temperature play crucial roles in grapevine metabolic processes and are known to have a positive impact on grape berry composition; however, excessive exposure to these factors can be detrimental. Kaolin-based particle film technology has emerged as a valuable solution for mitigating the effects of heat and water stresses in vineyards. This work aimed to evaluate the effects of kaolin application on the phenolic composition, chromatic characteristics, oenological parameters, volatile compounds and sensory profile of red wine. The study was carried out in one growing season in the commercial vineyard "Quinta dos Aciprestes" in the Douro Superior sub-region. Twelve rows in triplicate of the Touriga-Nacional variety underwent foliar kaolin treatment (applied at the pre-veraison stage, at the manufacturer-recommended and -tested dosage of 5 % (w/v)), and another twelve rows comprised the non-treated control group. Kaolin increased the phenolic compound and tartaric acid concentrations (2.4 % and 20.8 % respectively), total acidity (2.4 %), the deep reddish colour of the berries, total and coloured anthocyanin (2.8 %), and total and polymeric pigments (3.6 %); meanwhile, a decrease was observed in pH (-1.4 %) and alcoholic degree (-4.8 %). No significant differences were observed in any sensory parameters between the wine from the kaolin-treated and control vines, but the tasters found the aroma of the former to be fruitier and more complex, with an agreeable acidic taste and persistence. It was possible to group the volatile compounds into two distinct groups based on the results of the Pearson’s correlation matrix. This grouping corresponds to the sensory descriptors common to each of the respective volatiles. Overall, the results further support the potential efficacy of utilising kaolin to alleviate summer-related stress in grapevines.

Background/Objectives: Child parenting programs can enhance parental skills, prevent future issues in child development, and improve children’s quality of life. The present research aimed to study the changes promoted by the Family Education and Support Program (FAF) implemented in Cape Verde, regarding parental educational practices, perceived parental efficacy, and attitudes and beliefs of Cape Verdean parents. Methods: To this end, 37 participants were evaluated through a pretest-postest design. The evaluated dimensions were perceived parental competence, parenting practices, Parental attitudes and beliefs, mental health and perceived child quality of life. Results: A cluster analysis was conducted, distinguishing two groups. Both groups benefited from the program. Cluster 1 reported more significant gains in dimensions of parental efficacy and satisfaction, inadequate expectations, affection and support, and reactivity, while cluster 2 showed a greater difference in regulation and reactivity. Conclusions: Overall, the FAF intervention contributed to an increase in positive parenting practices. By analyzing potential underlying profiles in the change process, this study suggests that there are participants who benefit more than others from the intervention, and this information may be relevant for professionals and researchers in the field.

As estratégias de enfrentamento são um constructo relevante na avaliação do contexto familiar, em particular nas famílias em risco psicossocial. O presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar as características psicométricas e a estrutura fatorial do Brief Cope, que mede as estratégias de enfrentamento. Participaram 116 pais (80% mulheres, com uma média de idade de 35,30 anos) com menores e que beneficiavam de medidas de promoção nos serviços de proteção do Algarve. Para além do Brief Cope, também utilizámos um questionário sociodemográfico. Os resultados apoiam a retenção dos 28 itens, a aceitação da estrutura de 14 dimensões da versão original e mostram níveis satisfatórios de consistência interna. Apesar de algumas limitações, as propriedades psicométricas encontradas justificam a utilização deste instrumento com famílias em risco psicossocial.

A aliança parental diz respeito ao grau de cooperação existente entre os progenitores na educação das crianças. É uma dimensão fundamental para o funcionamento familiar adequado, particularmente em famílias em risco, que enfrentam desafios acrescidos. Esta investigação teve como objetivo validar e examinar as caraterísticas psicométricas do Inventário de Aliança Parental (PAI), uma das medidas mais utilizadas para avaliar este constructo, utilizando uma amostra de famílias portuguesas em risco psicossocial. Participaram 273 famílias com crianças recetoras de medidas de apoio e proteção, residentes no Algarve. Os progenitores preencheram o PAI e outros instrumentos destinados à avaliação das competências parentais e do stresse parental. A análise fatorial confirmatória replicou a versão unidimensional da escala original, com bons indicadores psicométricos de consistência interna e validade de constructo. Os resultados corroboram a utilidade e confiabilidade do PAI como uma medida fiável que poderá auxiliar os técnicos dos serviços de preservação familiar.

(1) Background: Volunteering satisfaction is one significant construct that nourishes the sustaining of volunteer work, and it is present in reference models such as the three-stage volunteer process model (VPM). The volunteer satisfaction survey (VSS), created by Vecina, Chacón and Sueiro, evaluates three different domains of volunteer satisfaction: specific motivations, organization management and volunteering tasks. The aim of this study was to adapt the instrument and explore the psychometric properties of the 17 items of the VSS in a sample of Portuguese volunteers. (2) Methods: The sample was composed of 335 Portuguese volunteers (aged between 14 and 81 years), mainly women (76.4%). Measures included volunteer satisfaction, work engagement and organizational commitment. (3) Results: The original three-factor model was tested with a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and the model fitted the data. Satisfactory levels of internal consistency, discriminant and convergent validity were found. (4) Conclusions: The VSS reveals good psychometric properties and can be considered a useful tool for professionals and future research for volunteers’ satisfaction assessment.

Gamification, defined as the integration of videogame components to promote a gameful experience, is increasingly being implemented in education with the aim of enhancing students' engagement and motivation. Accordingly, since 2010 it has constituted an area of growing interest for researchers and teachers. Following PRISMA 2020's methodology, a systematic review (SR) was conducted in November 2022 seeking to explore the influence of gamification strategies on students' motivation to learn. Having identified 548 articles, 40 studies were chosen based on the selection criteria set and analyzed to reveal that game elements such as points, badges and rankings are widely used to motivate students. From a theoretical perspective, gamification studies focus on the dichotomy of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The results suggest a positive influence of gamification strategies on students' motivation, although in the long run, such motivation can decline. Furthermore, the influence of a novelty effect and extrinsic rewards on motivation is identified, which can lead to greater motivation in the short term, followed by a decrease with further exposure to gamification. Future studies should focus on the influence of students' individual traits (e.g., gaming experience, openness to competition and cooperation) on gamification strategies. Moreover, long-term exposure to gamification as well as the novelty effect should be explored.

Parental involvement (PI) has particular relevance on children’s academic adjustment and on children’s general quality of life (QoL). QoL can be influenced by parental stress, specifically the stress suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the differences during the pandemic period (before, after and with no lockdown), comparing these constructs with parental educational level to provide predictors of their children’s quality of life. Data collection was performed with a non-probability convenience sampling procedure. It was composed of 129 parents, mainly women (71.8%), with children aged between 6 and 12 years. The family’s sociodemographic characteristics were assessed, as well as the PI, parental stress, and children’s QoL. The comparison between the three times revealed an increase in the children’s QoL, but no differences were found in PI. Based on the parental educational level, as defined by academic qualifications and split into superior and non-superior levels, it is possible conclude that engagement in school activities and parents’ meetings increased in the parents with superior education levels and decreased in the parents with lower education levels. This study concluded that despite this difficult and uncertain pandemic period, these parents were able to maintain important aspects of their children’s lives.

Family support encompasses a wide variety of professionals, sectors, and intervention paradigms that make it difficult to systematize and standardize the skills needed by the family support workforce. The present study aimed to describe the relevant skills of professionals, organize the main skills into different categories, and contribute to the development of intervention standardization guidelines in the field of family support. So, a systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. The search was carried out in five databases and included the analysis of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies, and all studies were qualitatively assessed. Of the initial 3334 articles identified, 59 studies were included, and four categories were identified: professionals’ qualities, essential skills common to all professions and contexts, specific knowledge, and theoretical approaches necessary for family support. Most of the studies were from the United Kingdom, qualitative, published in the last 10 years, used small samples, and included a specific group of professionals. The included studies did not specify whether some skills or characteristics were considered more effective in practice, and they had bias issues related to social desirability. The implications for family support practice are discussed, as well as the gaps to be covered in future studies.

There is growing concern about the relationship between screen use by young children and negative effects on their development, as children with developmental and socioemotional impairments tend to have difficulties in their relationships and increased academic problems. The aim of our study was to analyse the relationship between the use of multimedia devices and paediatric symptoms in children below 5 years old. Data from 534 Portuguese parents of children aged from 18 to 57 months were collected via a self-report questionnaire. Children’s daily exposure to multimedia devices was nearly 2 h per day. Paediatric symptoms were positively associated with watching television and screen time and negatively associated with parents’ working hours. Touchscreen use was more frequent among girls and older children. Parents’ working hours comprised the most significant predictor of paediatric symptoms. Our findings reinforce past findings on the adverse links between the use of multimedia devices and paediatric symptoms and also highlight the influence of other variables like the child’s age and gender, as well as parental factors. The need to both create a more comprehensive framework regarding the long-term effects of multimedia device use and delineate effective strategies for prevention and intervention with parents and children is discussed.

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare congenital condition characterised by the absence of skin, with or without the absence of underlying structures. Can appear as an isolated lesion or associated with other congenital malformations. The approach can be conservative or surgical. We report a case of a full-term male newborn with two adjacent ulcerated lesions with well-demarcated limits in the upper occipital region (20 and 4-5 mm diameter). Other alterations that could be associated with aplasia cutis were identified at examination, so the patient was referred to several consultations, and other system involvement was excluded. Re-evaluation at the first month of life revealed complete healing and conservative treatment was kept. After identification of ACC should be excluded other associated congenital malformations. Particularly if large skin defects or bone involvement is detected (higher risk of complications and mortality).

Enquadramento: a COVID-19 é uma doença infeciosa que pela sua alta transmissibilidade, rapidamente se tornou pandémica. Os profissionais de saúde, em especial os enfermeiros, têm maior risco de exposição pois encontram-se na frente de combate a esta pandemia. Objetivos: o estudo tem como objetivo explorar os conhecimentos, as atitudes, a perceção de risco e a perceção de proteção dos enfermeiros face à COVID-19, e possíveis associações entre estas variáveis. Metodologia: estudo descritivo, correlacional e transversal, baseado na aplicação de um questionário a uma amostra de 111 enfermeiros. Resultados: os resultados demonstraram um conhecimento satisfatório, média de respostas corretas de 68,8%; atitudes maioritariamente positivas, com um valor médio de 4,2 para um score total de 5; perceção de risco moderada com um valor médio de 5 para um score total de 10; perceção de proteção em função do equipamento de proteção individual moderada (M=2,5) e perceção de proteção em função do espaço físico também moderada (M=2,6) ambas para um score total de 5. Verificou-se uma associação entre o nível de conhecimento e atitudes mais positivas. Conclusão: estes resultados podem contribuir para identificar fatores que influenciam a prática dos enfermeiros, melhorando a qualidade da prestação de cuidados.

Abstract There is a lack of validated instruments to evaluate child protection programs in Portugal. The present study analyzed the psychometric characteristics of the Child Well-Being Scales (CWBS), a multidimensional measure of potential situations of abuse and neglect, in 276 families at psychosocial risk. Measures of parental efficiency, satisfaction and parental symptomatology were also collected. Through exploratory factor analysis, a 3-factor solution, similar to the original version was identified, with high levels of internal consistency (α between 0.82-0.86) and good model fit (GFI = 0.97, RMSR = 0.06). Regarding construct validity, significant correlations were found that were in line with theoretical expectation. Our results support the utility of EBI as a guide to the assessment and decision-making regarding child protection measures.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to translate the Pediatric International Knee Documentation Committee Score (Pedi-IKDC) into European Portuguese language. The Pedi-IKDC was originally developed in the English language and its main construct is functional assessment of knee disorders in children and adolescents. Material and Methods: The original English version of the questionnaire was translated to European Portuguese using the forwardbackwards method. Patients aged eight to 17 with knee disorders were considered eligible for the study. An online platform was implemented to collect patient responses, including general patient information, the questionnaires Pedi-IKDC, EuroQol-5 Dimension Youth and Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire. Three surveys were sent: at the moment of first evaluation (T0), after two (T1) and ten (T2) weeks. These surveys followed the Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments - COSMIN Checklist recommendations. The internal consistency, reliability, error of measurement, structural and construct validity (by means of correlation with previously validated scales), responsiveness and interpretability (floor/ceiling effects, MIC and ROC curve) were evaluated. Results: Forty-seven patients completed T0, 42 patients completed T1 and 40 patients completed T2. The factorial analysis confirmed that the scale has one dimension. Cronbach alpha (α) was 0.94; interclass correlation coefficient was 0.92; smallest detectable change was 19.04 for individuals and 3.31 for groups; standard error of measurement was 6.87; minimum important change was 18.48; floor and ceiling effects were absent. More than 75% of the hypotheses tested for construct validity were confirmed, showing its adequacy. The variation of scores between T0 and T2 correlated with the clinical evolution of the participants (r = 0.421, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The Portuguese version of Pedi-IKDC demonstrated good psychometric properties, being a valuable tool for clinical assessment of pediatric patients with knee disorder.

Port wine’s prominence worldwide is unequivocal and the grape spirit, which comprises roughly one fifth of the total volume of this fortified wine, is also a contributor to the recognized quality of this beverage. Nonetheless, information about the influence of the grape spirit on the final aroma of Port wine, as well as its volatile composition, is extremely limited. Moreover, the aroma characteristics of Port wines are modulated mainly by their volatile profiles. Hence, this review presents a detailed overview of the volatile composition of the fortification spirit and Port wine, along with the methodologies employed for their characterization. Moreover, it gives a general overview of the Douro Demarcated Region (Portugal) and the relevance of fortification spirit to the production of Port wine. As far as we know, this review contains the most extensive database on the volatile composition of grape spirit and Port wine, corresponding to 23 and 208 compounds, respectively. To conclude, the global outlook and future challenges are addressed, with the position of the analytical coverage of the chemical data on volatile components discussed as crucial for the innovation centered on consumer preferences.

The human senses shape the life in several aspects, namely well-being, socialization, health status, and diet, among others. However, only recently, the understanding of this highly sophisticated sensory neuronal pathway has gained new advances. Also, it is known that each olfactory receptor cell expresses only one type of odorant receptor, and each receptor can detect a limited number of odorant substances. Odorant substances are typically volatile or semi-volatile in nature, exhibit low relative molecular weight, and represent a wide variety of chemical families. These molecules may be released from foods, constituting clouds surrounding them, and are responsible for their aroma properties. A single natural aroma may contain a huge number of volatile components, and some of them are present in trace amounts, which make their study especially difficult. Understanding the components of food aromas has become more important than ever with the transformation of food systems and the increased innovation in the food industry. Two-dimensional gas chromatography and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-ToFMS) seems to be a powerful technique for the analytical coverage of the food aromas. Thus, the main purpose of this review is to critically discuss the potential of the GC × GC–based methodologies, combined with a headspace solvent-free microextraction technique, in tandem with data processing and data analysis, as a useful tool to the analysis of the chemical aroma clouds of foods. Due to the broad and complex nature of the aroma chemistry subject, some concepts and challenges related to the characterization of volatile molecules and the perception of aromas will be presented in advance. All topics covered in this review will be elucidated, as much as possible, with examples reported in recent publications, to make the interpretation of the fascinating world of food aroma chemistry more attractive and perceptive.

RESUMO: Os estudantes com deficiência podem enfrentar inúmeros obstáculos e desafios ao acessar o Ensino Superior (ES) e tentar ter sucesso nele. Os Serviços de Apoio para Estudantes com Deficiência nas universidades desempenham um papel importante no fornecimento de apoio direto e indireto para esses estudantes. Este artigo apresenta as perspectivas dos Coordenadores dos Serviços de Apoio no que diz respeito à prestação de serviços a estudantes com esta condição, descrevendo as suas características, dificuldades e desafios. Os dados foram coletados em 62 instituições universitárias públicas do Brasil e de Portugal por meio de questionário desenvolvido para esse fim. Apesar das demandas enfrentadas pelos Serviços de Apoio para Estudantes com Deficiência, os sinais de bom progresso no apoio a estes estudantes estão aumentando. Embora os serviços desempenhem um papel importante, uma autonomia mínima e dificuldades significativas permanecem em vários domínios de gestão e intervenção. São discutidas as mudanças e adaptações necessárias no apoio a estes estudantes nas universidades, considerando as consequências significativas da inclusão e do sucesso para os estudantes com deficiência. Políticas inclusivas baseadas na equidade e igualdade de oportunidades e mais recursos são necessários para garantir os direitos de todos os estudantes no Ensino Superior.

Chromatography was born approximately one century ago and has undergone outstanding technological improvements in innovation, research, and development since then that has made it fundamental to advances in knowledge at different levels, with a relevant impact on the well-being and health of individuals. Chromatography boosted a comprehensive and deeper understanding of the complexity and diversity of human–environment interactions and systems, how these interactions affect our life, and the several societal challenges we are currently facing, namely those related to the sustainability of our planet and the future generations. From the life sciences, which allowed us to identify endogenous metabolites relevant to disease mechanisms, to the OMICS field, nanotechnology, clinical and forensic analysis, drug discovery, environment, and “foodprint”, among others, the wide range of applications of today’s chromatographic techniques is impressive. This is fueled by a great variability of powerful chromatographic instruments currently available, with very high sensitivity, resolution, and identification capacity, that provide a strong basis for an analytical platform able to support the challenging demands of the postgenomic and post COVID-19 eras. Within this context, this review aims to address the great utility of chromatography in helping to cope with several societal-based challenges, such as the characterization of disease and/or physiological status, and the response to current agri-food industry challenges of food safety and sustainability, or the monitoring of environmental contamination. These are increasingly important challenges considering the climate changes, the tons of food waste produced every day, and the exponential growth of the human population. In this context, the principles governing the separation mechanisms in chromatography as well the different types and chromatographic techniques will be described. In addition, the major achievements and the most important technological advances will be also highlighted. Finally, a set of studies was selected in order to evince the importance of different chromatographic analyses to understand processes or create fundamental information in the response to current societal challenges.

Marital satisfaction is a key construct in the assessment of a couple’s relationship, and it encompasses aspects such as the feelings of affection, trust, and companionship that arise from the exchanges between spouses. The ENRICH Marital Satisfaction (EMS) Scale has been widely used as a reliable measure to assess marital satisfaction. In the present study, we aimed to analyze the psychometric properties and the factor structure of the EMS Scale in a sample of Portuguese parents. A total of 205 mothers and fathers participated; 107 were women (52%), and 98 were men (48%), and the mean age was 38.39 years (SD = 5.85). The majority were two-parent families (89.3%), with children between the ages of 1 and 13 years (M = 6.90), 53% of whom were boys. The participants completed the EMS Scale together with the Parenting Stress Index Short Form and the Parenting Alliance Inventory. The results from a confirmatory factor analysis corroborate the two-dimensional structure of the instrument, with internal validity and reliability values that were suitable for application in the Portuguese population. The EMS Scale can be an important resource, with good psychometric quality, for professionals and researchers, which can be used in assessment and intervention programs, both at the individual and couple levels.

The use of black soldier fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens L.) larvae fat as a lipid supplement in growing rabbit's diet was evaluated at two levels of supplementation in comparison to two levels of extruded linseed. Forty-eight weaned rabbits aged 35 days were individually housed in digestibility cages and randomly allocated to one of the four diets: Linseed-Low (30 g/kg of fat from linseed), Linseed-High (60 g/kg of fat from linseed), BSF-Low (30 g/kg of BSF fat), BSF-High (60 g/kg of BSF fat). Animals had ad libitum access to water and feed during 5 weeks, and were slaughtered at 70 days of age. In the fourth week of the trial, faeces were collected to allow the evaluation of total tract apparent digestibility (TTAD) of the diets. Mortality, dry matter (DM) intake, average daily gain, slaughter live weight, and carcass, liver, perirenal fat, scapular fat, and digestive tract weights were not affected (P > 0.05) either by fat source or fat level. The TTAD of DM, organic matter, ether extract, and gross energy were lower (P < 0.05) in the diet containing BSF fat than in linseed diets, and the decrease observed ranged between 2.3 to 3.1 percent points. With increasing the fat inclusion level, ether extract TTAD increased (P < 0.001) but the cellulose TTAD decreased (P < 0.01). Overall, diets containing BSF fat resulted in a slightly lower TTAD than linseed diets, but this seemed not to have affected growth performance and carcass yield. In conclusion, BSF fat could be considered an alternative lipid source for growing rabbit diets highlighting similar productive results to linseed.

The study aims to describe the parental use of an online parenting support programme, the ‘Open Window to Family’ (JAF) and to evaluate its impact on perceived children’s quality of life (QoL). This programme makes online resources available to support positive parenting. The study included 363 parents (nintervention group = 142) who completed measures to evaluate their children’s QoL. The results suggest that using the programme for a longer time and accessing more information/services are positively related to the perception of utility but not to the frequency of use. The programme proved to be more useful for specific difficulties and to search for specific information. We found high levels of parental perception of children’s well-being, both physical and psychological, and lower values in social support and relationships with peers. No differences were observed between the total QoL of children in the intervention group and control group. The differences in the dimensions of QoL are due to interaction with the level of education of the mother: mothers with higher education reported higher physical well-being, social support, relationships with peers, and school context. Guidelines are suggested to enhance the accessibility of this type of programme as well as enhance its impact on parents and children.

Abstract Stereotyped beliefs about old age and the aging process have proven to strongly promote negative behaviors toward the elderly, with unfavorable influences on their mental and physical health. Therefore, it is important to assess negative aging attitudes with brief but reliable and validated measurement instruments. The psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Negative Stereotypes Towards Aging Questionnaire (15 items self-reported) are explored and described in a sample of 302 participants (213 females and 89 males) between the ages of 18 and 59 years old. Confirmatory Factor Analysis shows a one-factor structure, similar to the Spanish version. The internal reliability and mean inter-item correlation showed satisfactory psychometric proprieties. Factorial ANOVA reveals that differences in agism beliefs are mainly related to educational level, with lower negative stereotypes in more educated adults. No differences were found concerning gender. This instrument may be a useful tool to assess negative stereotypes toward old age and the aging process.

The UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale is one of the most used and easily administered self-report measures of impulsive traits. The main objective of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the shorter SUPPS-P scale among a school sample of 470 youth (Mage = 15.89 years, SD = 1.00) from Portugal, subdivided into males (n = 257, Mage = 15.97 years, SD = 0.98) and females (n = 213, Mage = 15.79 years, SD = 1.03). Confirmatory factor analysis results revealed that the latent five-factor structure (i.e., Negative urgency, Lack of perseverance, Lack of premeditation, Sensation seeking, and Positive urgency) obtained adequate fit and strong measurement invariance demonstrated across sex. The SUPPS-P scale also demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties in terms of internal consistency, discriminant and convergent (e.g., with measures of youth delinquency, aggression) validities, and criterion-related validity (e.g., with crime seriousness). Findings support the use of the SUPPS-P scale in youth. Given the importance of adolescence as a critical period characterized by increases in impulsive behaviors, having a short, valid, reliable, and easily administered assessment of impulsive tendencies is important and clinically impactful.

In order to investigate the effect of a dietary amino acid mixture supplementation in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged weaned piglets, twenty-seven 28-day-old (8.2 ± 1.0 kg) newly weaned piglets were randomly allocated to one of three experimental treatments for five weeks. Diet 1: a CTRL treatment. Diet 2: an LPS treatment, where piglets were intraperitoneally administered LPS (25 μg/kg) on day 7. Diet 3: an LPS+MIX treatment, where piglets were intraperitoneally administered LPS on day 7 and fed a diet supplemented with a mixture of 0.3% of arginine, branched-chain amino acids (leucine, valine, and isoleucine), and cystine (MIX). Blood samples were drawn on day 10 and day 35, and serum was analysed for selected chemical parameters and proteomics. The LPS and LPS+MIX groups exhibited an increase in haptoglobin concentrations on day 10. The LPS group showed an increased cortisol concentration, while this concentration was reduced in the LPS+MIX group compared to the control group. Similarly, the LPS+MIX group showed a decreased haptoglobin concentration on day 35 compared to the two other groups. Immunoglobulin concentrations were affected by treatments. Indeed, on day 10, the concentrations of IgG and IgM were decreased by the LPS challenge, as illustrated by the lower concentrations of these two immunoglobulins in the LPS group compared to the control group. In addition, the supplementation with the amino acid mixture in the LPS+MIX further decreased IgG and increased IgM concentrations compared to the LPS group. Although a proteomics approach did not reveal important alterations in the protein profile in response to treatments, LPS-challenged piglets had an increase in proteins linked to the immune response, when compared to piglets supplemented with the amino acid mixture. Overall, data indicate that LPS-challenged piglets supplemented with this amino acid mixture are more protected against the detrimental effects of LPS.

Foodomics, emergent field of metabolomics, has been applied to study food system processes, and it may be useful to understand sensorial food properties, among others, through foods metabolites profiling. Thus, as beer volatile components represent the major contributors for beer overall and peculiar aroma properties, this work intends to perform an in-depth profiling of lager beer volatile metabolites and to generate new data that may contribute for molecules’ identification, by using multidimensional gas chromatography. A set of lager beers were used as case-study, and 329 volatile metabolites were determined, distributed over 8 chemical families: acids, alcohols, esters, monoterpenic compounds, norisoprenoids, sesquiterpenic compounds, sulfur compounds, and volatile phenols. From these, 96 compounds are reported for the first time in the lager beer volatile composition. Around half of them were common to all beers under study. Clustering analysis allowed a beer typing according to production system: macro- and microbrewer beers. Monoterpenic and sesquiterpenic compounds were the chemical families that showed wide range of chemical structures, which may contribute for the samples’ peculiar aroma characteristics. In summary, as far as we know, this study presents the most in-depth lager beer volatile composition, which may be further used in several approaches, namely, in beer quality control, monitoring brewing steps, raw materials composition, among others.

Introduction: Candida species are part of the normal microbiota of healthy subjects, living as commensals. However, they can become pathogenic when changes in the mechanisms of host defense or disruption of anatomic barriers occur. Candidiasis is the most common fungal infection in the oral cavity, mainly caused by Candida albicans. The diagnosis is based on symptoms and clinical aspects, in association with laboratory methods. Objective: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of Gram’s method for Candida spp. identification in scrapes from the buccal mucosa and evaluate the degree of concordance between clinical and cytological methods in the diagnosis of oral candidiasis. Material and methods: A blind study was performed in 170 smears from patients of Hospital Universitário Antônio Pedro of Universidade Federal Fluminense (HUAP/UFF), stained by Gram (n = 57), periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) (n = 57) and Papanicolaou (Pap) (n = 57) methods. Results: The comparative analysis of the methods demonstrated a higher prevalence of Candida spp. (12%) in PAS than in Gram staining, without statistic significance. The cytology method was positive in 93% of the clinical diagnosis of candidiasis. Conclusion: Gram was an adequate method; however more intensive professional training would be necessary to identify the fungus morphological structures. Although Pap test is the most common method of routine cytopathologic examination, for candidiasis diagnosis PAS staining is also recommended. Thus, it is suggested that candidiasis diagnosis should be accomplished by clinical evaluation in association with cytopathological analysis based on the identification of hyphae and/or pseudohyphae.

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar os resultados do estudo de avaliabilidade do Programa Academia Carioca da Saúde visando ampliar a compreensão sobre a intervenção e maximizar a utilidade da avaliação. Foram realizadas as seguintes etapas: análise documental, entrevista com informantes-chave, modelização da intervenção e formulação das perguntas avaliativas. A construção do Modelo Lógico do Programa permitiu descrever as dimensões e os componentes do programa, as ações estratégicas e os efeitos esperados com ênfase no acesso regular às praticas corporais e de atividade física, nos grupos de promoção da saúde e no fortalecimento da participação comunitária.

O objetivo deste artigo é refletir sobre o percurso político e organizacional do Sistema de Vigilância em Saúde no Brasil. Trata-se de um estudo exploratório e descritivo, realizado por meio de uma revisão narrativa em bases de domínio público, no período compreendido entre 1998 e 2013. Os autores apresentam uma breve trajetória do campo das vigilâncias epidemiológica, ambiental e sanitária em direção a um sistema mais integrado e resolutivo. Por fim, faz-se um debate acerca dos avanços e dos desafios de articulação das propostas de mudança organizacional e da integração de práticas em busca de respostas mais efetivas no âmbito da Vigilância em Saúde.

Associations between variants in the FTO locus and plasma concentrations of appetite related hormones are inconsistent, and might not work in a dose dependent fashion in people with obesity. Moreover, it is relevant to report meal related plasma concentrations of these hormones in persons with obesity given the growing interest in their pharmacological potential in obesity therapy. We find it clinically relevant to examine associations between the SNP rs9939609 genotypes and homeostatic appetite regulation in individuals with BMI ≥35 kg/m2. This study explored associations of the rs9939609 genotypes to plasma concentrations of acylated ghrelin, active glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), and total peptide YY (PYY), and moderating effects of fat mass (FM), in 96 adults (69% female) with BMI ≥35 kg/m2, using a cross sectional observation study designed to have 1/3 of participants each with genotypes TT, AT and AA, respectively. Participants were median (25th, 75th percentile) 42.5 (32, 50) years of age, weighed 120.9 (109.6, 142.4) kg, and had a BMI of 42.8 (39.5, 46.4) kg/m2. Acylated ghrelin, active GLP-1, and total PYY were measured in the fasted state and half-hourly for 2.5h after a standardized meal. We evaluated associations between genotype and appetite hormones in regression analysis controlling for FM and sex. Genotype did not associate with fasting or postprandial (area under curve, AUC) GLP-1 or PYY. Genotype did not associate with fasting acylated ghrelin, but in females with genotype AA, increased FM was associated with higher fasting and postprandial (AUC) acylated ghrelin concentrations relative to genotypes TT (fasting p = 0.025; AUC p = 0.004) and AT (fasting p = 0.002; AUC p < 0.001). This novel finding warrants further investigation.

IntroductionLipedema is a common, yet underdiagnosed, subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) disorder. The main characteristics are SAT expansion in the lower extremities and arms, pain, and tenderness to palpation. It remains unknown if a low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) influences SAT in females with lipedema.ObjectivesTo evaluate the effect of a LCD low-energy diet, compared to a low-fat isoenergetic control diet, on calf subcutaneous adipose tissue area, muscle area, SAT/muscle ratio, calf circumference and body composition in females with lipedema.Subjects/methodsAdult females with obesity and lipedema were randomized to 1,200 kcal/day diets, either LCD or control (75 and 180 g/day of carbohydrates, respectively) for 8 weeks. Body composition was measured with bioelectrical impedance analysis, calf SAT area, muscle area, and circumference with magnetic resonance imaging and pain with brief pain inventory, before and after the intervention.ResultsThirteen participants were included (five in the LCD group), with a mean age of 46 ± 12 years and a BMI of 37 ± 6 kg/m2. A significant reduction in calf SAT area, calf circumference, and pain was observed in the LCD group only. Both LCD and control groups experienced a significant reduction body weight, fat mass, fat free mass, and muscle area, with no differences between groups. No significant changes over time were found for SAT/muscle ratio.ConclusionA LCD has the potential to reduce SAT and pain in females with lipedema, despite a reduction in muscle mass in lipedema affected areas in both diet groups. Abstract Objective Bariatric surgery induces a significant loss of both fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM). The proteoglycan receptor syndecan-4 (SDC4) plays a crucial role in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle functions. Thus, this study was performed (i) to assess plasma SDC4 levels after both Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) surgeries, and (ii) to explore potential associations with changes in body composition variables. Results Twenty-six patients (17 females) with severe obesity underwent SG (n = 13) or RYGB (n = 13) and were followed up to 1 year (1Y). Body weight, FM, FFM, and SCD4 were measured at baseline (BL), and at week 11 (W11) and 1Y after surgery. Independently of procedure, there was a significant body weight loss at W11, with an average FM and FFM reduction of 13.7 ± 0.6 kg and 5.3 ± 0.5 kg, respectively. Participants continued to lose weight afterwards, with a total weigth loss of 38.2 ± 1.5 kg at 1Y. No associations were found at BL between SDC4 levels and any anthropometric variable; however, SDC4 levels were lower than BL at both W11 and 1Y, independently of type of surgery. Additionally, changes in SDC4 between BL and 1Y were positively correlated with weight and FFM loss during the same period. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04051190 on 09/08/2019.
