1. Do LLMs write like humans? Variation in grammatical and rhetorical styles

Abstract

Large language models (LLMs) are capable of writing grammatical text that follows instructions, answers questions, and solves problems. As they have advanced, it has become difficult to distinguish their output from human-written text. While past research has found some differences in surface features such as word choice and punctuation, and developed classifiers to detect LLM output, none has studied the rhetorical styles of LLMs. Using several variants of Llama 3 and GPT-4o, we construct two parallel corpora of human- and LLM-written texts from common prompts. Using Douglas Biber's set of lexical, grammatical, and rhetorical features, we identify systematic differences between LLMs and humans and between different LLMs. These differences persist when moving from smaller models to larger ones, and are larger for instruction-tuned models than base models. This demonstrates that despite their advanced abilities, LLMs struggle to match human styles, and hence more advanced linguistic features can detect patterns in their behavior not previously recognized., Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures, 11 tables

Abstract

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. 3. Dot Product Representations of Graphs Using Tropical Arithmetic

Abstract

A dot-product representation of a graph is a mapping of its vertices to vectors of length $k$ so that vertices are adjacent if and only if the inner product (a.k.a. dot product) of their corresponding vertices exceeds some threshold. Minimizing dimension of the vector space into which the vectors must be mapped is a typical focus. We investigate this and structural characterizations of graphs whose dot product representations are mappings into the tropical semi-rings of min-plus and max-plus. We also observe that the minimum dimension required to represent a graph using a \emph{tropical representation} is equal to the better-known threshold dimension of the graph; that is, the minimum number of subgraphs that are threshold graphs whose union is the graph being represented.

5. Identity Construction in a Misogynist Incels Forum

Abstract

Online communities of involuntary celibates (incels) are a prominent source of misogynist hate speech. In this paper, we use quantitative text and network analysis approaches to examine how identity groups are discussed on incels-dot-is, the largest black-pilled incels forum. We find that this community produces a wide range of novel identity terms and, while terms for women are most common, mentions of other minoritized identities are increasing. An analysis of the associations made with identity groups suggests an essentialist ideology where physical appearance, as well as gender and racial hierarchies, determine human value. The development of new technologies and their expanding use in a wide range of educational environments are driving the transformation of higher education. Assistive technologies are a subset of cutting-edge technology that can help students learn more effectively and make education accessible to everyone. Assistive technology can enhance, maintain, or improve the capacities of students with learning difficulties. Students with learning difficulties will be greatly benefited from the use of assistive technologies. If these technologies are used effectively, students with learning difficulties can compete with their peers and complete their academic tasks. We aim to conduct this review to better understand the role of assistive technologies in providing inclusive higher education for students with learning difficulties. The review begins with the introduction of learning difficulties and their causes; inclusive education and the need for assistive technologies; the reasoning for conducting this review; and a summary of related reviews on assistive technologies for students with learning difficulties in inclusive higher education. Then, we discuss the preliminaries for the learning difficulties type and assistive technology. Later, we discuss the effects of assistive technology on inclusive higher education for students with learning difficulties. Additionally, we discuss related projects and support tools available in inclusive higher education for students with learning difficulties. We also explore the challenges and possible solutions related to using assistive technology in higher education to provide inclusive education for students with learning difficulties. Abstract

Fast charging of most commercial lithium-ion batteries is limited due to fear of lithium plating on the graphite anode, which is difficult to detect and poses considerable safety risk. Here we demonstrate the power of simple, accessible and high-throughput cycling techniques to quantify irreversible Li plating spanning data from over 200 cells. We first observe the effects of energy density, charge rate, temperature and state of charge on lithium plating, use the results to refine a mature physics-based electrochemical model and provide an interpretable empirical equation for predicting the plating onset state of charge. We then explore the reversibility of lithium plating and its connection to electrolyte design for preventing irreversible Li accumulation. Finally, we design a method to quantify in situ Li plating for commercially relevant graphite|LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 (NMC) cells and compare with results from the experimentally convenient Li|graphite configuration. The hypotheses and abundant data herein were generated primarily with equipment universal to the battery researcher, encouraging further development of innovative testing methods and data processing that enable rapid battery engineering.

Abstract

The nuclear equation of state (EOS) is at the center of numerous theoretical and experimental efforts in nuclear physics. With advances in microscopic theories for nuclear interactions, the availability of experiments probing nuclear matter under conditions not reached before, endeavors to develop sophisticated and reliable transport simulations to interpret these experiments, and the advent of multi-messenger astronomy, the next decade will bring new opportunities for determining the nuclear matter EOS, elucidating its dependence on density, temperature, and isospin asymmetry. Among controlled terrestrial experiments, collisions of heavy nuclei at intermediate beam energies (from a few tens of MeV/nucleon to about 25 GeV/nucleon in the fixed-target frame) probe the widest ranges of baryon density and temperature, enabling studies of nuclear matter from a few tenths to about 5 times the nuclear saturation density and for temperatures from a few to well above a hundred MeV, respectively. Collisions of neutron-rich isotopes further bring the opportunity to probe effects due to the isospin asymmetry. However, capitalizing on the enormous scientific effort aimed at uncovering the dense nuclear matter EOS, both at RHIC and at FRIB as well as at other international facilities, depends on the continued development of state-of-the-art hadronic transport simulations. 19. How Hate Speech Varies by Target Identity: A Computational Analysis

Abstract

This paper investigates how hate speech varies in systematic ways according to the identities it targets. Across multiple hate speech datasets annotated for targeted identities, we find that classifiers trained on hate speech targeting specific identity groups struggle to generalize to other targeted identities. This provides empirical evidence for differences in hate speech by target identity; we then investigate which patterns structure this variation. We find that the targeted demographic category (e.g. gender/sexuality or race/ethnicity) appears to have a greater effect on the language of hate speech than does the relative social power of the targeted identity group. We also find that words associated with hate speech targeting specific identities often relate to stereotypes, histories of oppression, current social movements, and other social contexts specific to identities. Abstract

We describe the newest generation of the SLAC Microresonator RF (SMuRF) electronics, a warm digital control and readout system for microwave-frequency resonator-based cryogenic detector and multiplexer systems such as microwave SQUID multiplexers ($\mu$mux) or microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs). Ultra-sensitive measurements in particle physics and astronomy increasingly rely on large arrays of cryogenic sensors, which in turn necessitate highly multiplexed readout and accompanying room-temperature electronics. Microwave-frequency resonators are a popular tool for cryogenic multiplexing, with the potential to multiplex thousands of detector channels on one readout line. The SMuRF system provides the capability for reading out up to 3328 channels across a 4-8 GHz bandwidth. Notably, the SMuRF system is unique in its implementation of a closed-loop tone-tracking algorithm that minimizes RF power transmitted to the cold amplifier, substantially relaxing system linearity requirements and effective noise from intermodulation products. Here we present a description of the hardware, firmware, and software systems of the SMuRF electronics, comparing achieved performance with science-driven design requirements. We focus in particular on the case of large channel count, low bandwidth applications, but the system has been easily reconfigured for high bandwidth applications. Abstract

We present the discovery of two exoplanets transiting TOI-836 (TIC 440887364) using data from TESS Sector 11 and Sector 38. TOI-836 is a bright ($T = 8.5$ mag), high proper motion ($\sim\,200$ mas yr$^{-1}$), low metallicity ([Fe/H]$\approx\,-0.28$) K-dwarf with a mass of $0.68\pm0.05$ M$_{\odot}$ and a radius of $0.67\pm0.01$ R$_{\odot}$. We obtain photometric follow-up observations with a variety of facilities, and we use these data-sets to determine that the inner planet, TOI-836 b, is a $1.70\pm0.07$ R$_{\oplus}$ super-Earth in a 3.82 day orbit, placing it directly within the so-called 'radius valley'. The outer planet, TOI-836 c, is a $2.59\pm0.09$ R$_{\oplus}$ mini-Neptune in an 8.60 day orbit. Radial velocity measurements reveal that TOI-836 b has a mass of $4.5\pm0.9$ M$_{\oplus}$ , while TOI-836 c has a mass of $9.6\pm2.6$ M$_{\oplus}$. Photometric observations show Transit Timing Variations (TTVs) on the order of 20 minutes for TOI-836 c, although there are no detectable TTVs for TOI-836 b. The TTVs of planet TOI-836 c may be caused by an undetected exterior planet.

Abstract

This thesis is concerned with plethysm. It investigates certain plethysm coefficients and also studies a diagram algebra whose representation theory is related to plethysm. We use techniques involving plethystic semistandard Young tableaux in order to provide information about near-maximal constituents of the plethysm sν ◦sµ when µ = (m),(12 ) or (2, 1). We study further the case where µ = (12 ) by the means of a recursive formula of Law and Okitani. We study the ramified partition algebra, proving some new results about its representation theory. We show that the ramified partition algebra is a cellular algebra and investigate its cell modules. We show that the cell modules of the ramified partition algebra form a stratifying system, and hence prove an analogue of the Hemmer-Nakano theorem for this algebra. We give partial results on the semisimplicity of the ramified partition algebra over C, making a conjecture for the general case. Finally, we study the restriction of the cell modules for the ramified partition algebra to the partition algebra, investigating two filtrations and making progress on the decomposition of such modules.

23. Virtual Subinternships in the COVID Era: Lessons Learned from Three Institutional Experiences

Abstract

After the cessation of all in-person visiting rotations during the coronavirus 2019 pandemic, many programs developed virtual rotations as an alternative for the recruitment and education of prospective applicants. In this study, we developed a consortium of three institutions each with a unique virtual subinternship and prospectively surveyed participating students in order to reflect and improve upon future rotations. All students participating in virtual subinternships at three institutions were administered the same pre subinternship and post subinternship electronic surveys. Subinternship curricula were developed independently at each respective institution. Fifty-two students completed both surveys, for an overall response rate of 77.6%. Students' primary objectives were to evaluate their fit with the program (94.2%), interact with residents (94.2%), gain faculty mentorship (88.5%), and improve didactic knowledge (82.7%). Postrotation surveys revealed that over 73% of students reported having met all of these objectives over the course of the rotation. On average, students ranked programs 5% higher overall after the rotation (P = 0.024). Postrotation results showed that the majority (71.2%) of students perceived the virtual subinternship as slightly less valuable than in-person subinternships but that all students would participate in a virtual subinternship again. Student objectives can be successfully met using the virtual format for subinternships. The virtual format is also effective in enhancing the overall perception of a program and its residents. Although students still prefer in-person subinternships, our results suggest that virtual rotations are more accessible and very capable of meeting student goals.

When designed for low-resource settings, emergency care training has been shown to improve provider skills, facilitate efficient use of available resources, and reduce death and disability by ensuring timely access to life-saving care.MethodsThe WHO/ICRC Basic Emergency Care (BEC) Course with follow up longitudinal mentorship for 6 months was implemented in rural Neno District Malawi from September 2019-April 2020. We completed a mixed-methods analysis of the course and mentorship included mentor and participant surveys and feedback, mentorship quantification, and participant examination results. Simple descriptive statistics and boxplot visuals were used to describe participant demographics and mentorship quantification with a Wilcoxon signed-rank test to evaluate pre- and post-test scores. The success of high energy physics programs relies heavily on accurate detector simulations and beam interaction modeling. The increasingly complex detector geometries and beam dynamics require sophisticated techniques in order to meet the demands of current and future experiments. 29. Exploring Connections between Prospective Teachers' Views of Authority and Experiences in Justification

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to understand how implicit views of authority support or limit prospective elementary teachers' (PTs) mathematical activity of justifying and to understand how the experience of justifying might support a development of an internal source of authority. In this case study of 18 PTs, we coordinate an analysis of (1) their responses to two justification tasks and (2) interview transcripts in which they discuss their experiences in learning to justify. Preliminary results indicate ways in which their views of authority limited their reasoning about mathematics by not recognizing their own sense-making and supported a sense-making exploration of mathematics that was freeing and empowering. These results provide mathematics teacher educators with insight to help them identify and address limiting views of authority and leverage productive views of authority. Abstract

On the basis of the knowledge that the proline-rich hot spot PPPRPP region of P(151)PSNPPPRPP(160), an oligopeptide derived from the cytosolic portion of p22phox (p22), binds to the single functional bis-SH3 domain of the regulatory protein p47phox (p47), we designed a mimetic of the tripeptide PPP based on NMR and X-ray crystallographic data for the p22(151-161) peptide PPSNPPPRPPA with a peptide construct. Incorporation of the synthetic pseudo-triproline mimetic Pro-Pro-Cyp in a molecule derived from molecular modeling studies led to only a 7-fold diminution in activity in a surface plasmon resonance assay relative to the same molecule containing the natural Pro-Pro-Pro tripeptide. The alternative sequence corresponding to a Pro-Cyp-Pro insertion was inactive. This is a first example of the use of a triproline mimetic to interfere with the formation of the p47-p22 complex, which is critical for the activation of NOX, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species as superoxide anions.

Virtual communities of faculty practice (CoP) provide support for and supplement the demanding doctoral curriculum with the purpose of assisting doctoral students through a holistic support system. This virtual community provides a positive private environment where faculty engage, share, and discuss current research questions or issues to encourage scholarship and collegiality. This scholarly essay presents an overview of faculty virtual CoPs in the context of mentoring online doctoral students. Attention is given to the definition of communities of practice, Wenger's communities of practice model, producing and sustaining communities of practice, and incorporation of virtual CoPs at the doctoral level.

35. Nuclear data evaluation with Bayesian networks

Abstract

Bayesian networks are graphical models to represent the probabilistic relationships between variables in the Bayesian framework. The knowledge of all variables can be updated using new information about some of the variables. We show that relying on the Bayesian network interpretation enables large scale inference and gives flexibility in incorporating prior assumptions and constraints into the nuclear data evaluation process, such as sum rules and the non-negativity of cross sections. The latter constraint is accounted for by a non-linear transformation and therefore we also discuss inference in Bayesian networks with non-linear relationships. Using Bayesian networks, the evaluation process yields detailed information, such as posterior estimates and uncertainties of all statistical and systematic errors. We also elaborate on a sparse Gaussian process construction compatible with the Bayesian network framework that can for instance be used as prior on energy-dependent model parameters, model deficiencies and energy-dependent systematic errors of experiments. We present three proof-of-concept examples that emerged in the context of the neutron data standards project and in the ongoing international evaluation efforts of $^{56}$Fe. In the first example we demonstrate the modelization and explicit estimation of relative energy-dependent error components of experimental datasets. Then we show an example evaluation using the outlined Gaussian process construction in an evaluation of $^{56}$Fe in the energy range between one and two MeV, where R-Matrix and nuclear model fits are difficult. Finally, we present a model-based evaluation of $^{56}$Fe between 5 MeV and 30 MeV with a sound treatment of model deficiencies. Abstract

A $(0,1)$-labelling of a set is said to be {\em friendly} if approximately one half the elements of the set are labelled 0 and one half labelled 1. Let $g$ be a labelling of the edge set of a graph that is induced by a labelling $f$ of the vertex set. If both $g$ and $f$ are friendly then $g$ is said to be a {\em cordial} labelling of the graph. We extend this concept to directed graphs and investigate the cordiality of sets of directed graphs. We investigate a specific type of cordiality on digraphs, a restriction of quasigroup-cordiality called $(2,3)$-cordiality. A directed graph is $(2,3)$-cordial if there is a friendly labelling $f$ of the vertex set which induces a $(1,-1,0)$-labelling of the arc set $g$ such that about one third of the arcs are labelled 1, about one third labelled -1 and about one third labelled 0. In particular we determine which tournaments are $(2,3)$-cordial, which orientations of the $n$-wheel are $(2,3)$-cordial, and which orientations of the $n -$fan are $(2,3)$-cordial.

46. Multiscale modelling of type 316H stainless steel to inform creep-fatigue assessment procedures

Abstract

The problem of carburisation in austenitic stainless steels poses a risk to the on- going servicability of the UK's Advanced Gas Cooled Reactors. Carburisation affects boiler components due to their exposure to a high temperature, carbon rich environ- ment which leads to a material modification resulting in a hardened, embrittled outer layer. A functionally graded material model is fitted to hardness and EPMA data and used in conjunction with finite element analysis to examine the impact of differing ma- terial property distributions consistent with those observed in carburised components on an internally pressurised pipe; this is compared with the existing R5 method of defining properties in a duplex structure. A positionally dependent form of Fick's Law is solved in a phase field model to predict the evolution of carbon distribution into a grain structure exposed to a carburising environment. The effect of varying the ratio of grain to grain boundary diffusivity is examined with regard to its effect on carbon distribution in the grains and boundaries after the exposure period. Subsequently, ar- tificial hydrostatic stress is introduced to a phase field model of a representative grain structure to determine the extent to which carburisation is impacted by the presence of stress in a component. This is applied both homogenously across the entire examined volume and preferentially on grain boundaries in order to provide a basic analogy to the stresses observed in creep.

Abstract

Accurate nuclear data provide an essential foundation for advances in a wide range of fields, including nuclear energy, nuclear safety and security, safeguards, nuclear medicine, and planetary and space exploration. In these and other critical domains, outdated, imprecise, and incomplete nuclear data can hinder progress, limit precision, and compromise safety. Similar nuclear data needs are shared by many applications, thus prioritizing these needs is especially important and urgently needed. Many levels of analysis are required to prepare nuclear measurements for employment in end-user applications. Because research expertise is typically limited to one level, collaboration across organizations and international borders is essential. This perspective piece provides the latest advances in nuclear data for applications and describes an outlook for both near- and long-term progress in the field.

Abstract

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) power virtually all modern portable devices and electric vehicles, and their ubiquity continues to grow. With increasing applications, however, come increasing challenges, especially when operating conditions deviate from room temperature. While high-temperature performance and degradation has been extensively studied in LIBs, sub-zero Celsius performance has received less attention, despite being critical for batteries in transportation roles. Although many individual processes contribute to the capacity loss commonly observed in LIBs at low temperatures, most of them are governed to some extent by the non-aqueous liquid electrolyte present throughout the cell interior. Therefore, electrolyte engineering presents an unparalleled opportunity to study and address the fundamental causes of low-temperature failure. In this review, we first briefly cover the various processes that determine lithium-ion performance below 0 °C. Then, we outline recent literature on electrolyte-based strategies to improve said performance, including various additives, solvents and lithium salts. Finally, we summarize these findings and provide some perspectives on the current state of the field, including promising new areas of investigation.

We define a notion of height for rational points with respect to a vector bundle on a proper algebraic stack with finite diagonal over a global field, which generalizes the usual notion for rational points on projective varieties. We explain how to compute this height for various stacks of interest (for instance: classifying stacks of finite groups, symmetric products of varieties, moduli stacks of abelian varieties, weighted projective spaces). In many cases our uniform definition reproduces ways already in use for measuring the complexity of rational points, while in others it is something new. Abstract

We discuss the $\ell$-adic case of Mazur's "Program B" over $\mathbb{Q}$, the problem of classifying the possible images of $\ell$-adic Galois representations attached to elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, equivalently, classifying the rational points on the corresponding modular curves. The primes $\ell=2$ and $\ell\ge 13$ are addressed by prior work, so we focus on the remaining primes $\ell = 3, 5, 7, 11$. For each of these $\ell$, we compute the directed graph of arithmetically maximal $\ell$-power level modular curves $X_H$, compute explicit equations for all but three of them, and classify the rational points on all of them except $X_{{\rm ns}}^{+}(N)$, for $N = 27, 25, 49, 121$, and two level $49$ curves of genus $9$ whose Jacobians have analytic rank $9$. Aside from the $\ell$-adic images that are known to arise for infinitely many $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$-isomorphism classes of elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$, we find only 22 exceptional images that arise for any prime $\ell$ and any $E/\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication; these exceptional images are realized by 20 non-CM rational $j$-invariants. We conjecture that this list of 22 exceptional images is complete and show that any counterexamples must arise from unexpected rational points on $X_{\rm ns}^+(\ell)$ with $\ell\ge 19$, or one of the six modular curves noted above. This yields a very efficient algorithm to compute the $\ell$-adic images of Galois for any elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. In an appendix with John Voight we generalize Ribet's observation that simple abelian varieties attached to newforms on $\Gamma_1(N)$ are of ${\rm GL}_2$-type; this extends Kolyvagin's theorem that analytic rank zero implies algebraic rank zero to isogeny factors of the Jacobian of $X_H$., Comment: Minor corrections; 71 pages; 22 tables
