Abstract

The Gauss map of a generic immersion of a smooth, oriented surface into $\mathbb R^4$ is an immersion. But this map takes values on the Grassmanian of oriented 2-planes in $\mathbb R^4$. Since this manifold has a structure of a product of two spheres, the Gauss map has two components that take values on the sphere. We study the singularities of the components of the Gauss map and relate them to the geometric properties of the generic immersion. Moreover, we prove that the singularities are generically stable, and we connect them to the contact type of the surface and $\mathcal J$-holomorphic curves with respect to an orthogonal complex structure $\mathcal J$ on $\mathbb R^4$. Finally, we get some formulas of Gauss-Bonnet type involving the geometry of the singularities of the components with the geometry and topology of the surface., Comment: 27 pages, 1 figures

2. Double resonances in Borromean heteronuclear triatomic systems

Abstract

We investigate the occurrence of Borromean three-body continuum s-wave resonances, in an $\alpha\alpha\beta$ system for large negative two-body scattering lengths. The energy and width are determined by a scaling function with arguments given by energy ratios of the two-body virtual state subsystem energies with the shallowest three-body bound state. The Borromean continuum resonances emerging from Efimov states present a peculiar behavior for trapped ultracold atoms near a Feshbach resonance: two resonances with equal energies at different values of the scattering length. The corresponding three-body recombination peaks should merge as the temperature is raised, with one moving towards lower values of the scattering length as the other moves to larger values.

Abstract

We study triatomic systems in the regime of large negative scattering lengths which may be more favorable for the formation of condensed trimers in trapped ultracold monoatomic gases as the competition with the weakly bound dimers is absent. The manipulation of the scattering length can turn an excited weakly bound Efimov trimer into a continuum resonance. Its energy and width are described by universal scaling functions written in terms of the scattering length and the binding energy, $B_3$, of the shallowest triatomic molecule. For $a^{-1}<-0.0297 \sqrt{m B_3/\hbar^2}$ the excited Efimov state turns into a continuum resonance., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

2012 Ocean Sciences Meeting, 20-24 February 2012, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, It is widely known that eddies and their attendant fronts play an important role in oceanic biological processes and may constitute a unique pelagic habitat for larvae. Previous studies that we conducted in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) region showed that the variability in the Loop Current and anticyclonic ring field was reflected on the larval fish distribution of some species, likely associated to the boundaries of the latter features. To date, however, there has been only very limited studies in the region using satellite data to assess the influence of smaller mesoscale features on larvae assemblages. Our primary goal in this study is to explore the effect of the divergence and convergence associated to cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies on the complex variability of larval fish assemblages in the northern GOM. To complement visual eddy detection techniques, we use the footprint that cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies leave in sea surface height, temperature, and chlorophyll a, basically by analyzing satellite altimetry fields and applying the Okubo-Weiss parameter

Abstract

Consider a Riemannian vector bundle of rank 1 defined by a normal vector field $\nu$ on a surface $M$ in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$. Let $\mathrm{II}_{\nu}$ be the second fundamental form with respect to $\nu$ which determines a configuration of lines of curvature. In this article, we obtain conditions on $\nu$ to isometrically immerse the surface $M$ with $\mathrm{II}_{\nu}$ as a second fundamental form into $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. Geometric restrictions on $M$ are determined by these conditions. As a consequence, we analyze the extension of Loewner's conjecture, on the index of umbilic points of surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$, to special configurations on surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$.

Abstract

The first eXpendable BathyThermographs (XBTs) were deployed in the 1960s in the North Atlantic Ocean. In 1967 XBTs were deployed in operational mode to provide a continuous record of temperature profile data along repeated transects, now known as the Global XBT Network. The current network is designed to monitor ocean circulation and boundary current variability, basin-wide and trans-basin ocean heat transport, and global and regional heat content. The ability of the XBT Network to systematically map the upper ocean thermal field in multiple basins with repeated trans-basin sections at eddy-resolving scales remains unmatched today and cannot be reproduced at present by any other observing platform. Some repeated XBT transects have now been continuously occupied for more than 30 years, providing an unprecedented long-term climate record of temperature, and geostrophic velocity profiles that are used to understand variability in ocean heat content (OHC), sea level change, and meridional ocean heat transport. Here, we present key scientific advances in understanding the changing ocean and climate system supported by XBT observations. Improvement in XBT data quality and its impact on computations, particularly of OHC, are presented. Technology development for probes, launchers, and transmission techniques are also discussed.
