IBM-1} calculations for the fission products $^{108,110,112}$Ru have been carried out. The even-even isotopes of Ru can be described as transitional nuclei situated between the U(5) (spherical vibrator) and SO(6) ($\gamma$-unstable rotor) symmetries of the Interacting Boson Model. At first, a Hamiltonian with only one- and two-body terms has been used. Excitation energies and $B$(E2) ratios of gamma transitions have been calculated. A satisfactory agreement has been obtained, with the exception of the odd-even staggering in the quasi-$\gamma$ bands of $^{110,112}$Ru. The observed pattern is rather similar to the one for a rigid triaxial rotor. A calculation based on a Hamiltonian with three-body terms was able to remove this discrepancy. The relation between the IBM and the triaxial rotor model was also examined., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

With a resolution of 3 keV, the two lowest 0- states in 208Pb are identified by measurements of the reaction 207Pb(d, p) with the Muenchen Q3D magnetic spectrograph in a region where the average level spacing is 6 keV. Precise relative spectroscopic factors are determined. Matrix elements of the residual interaction among one-particle one-hole configurations in a two-level scheme are derived for the two lowest 0- states in 208Pb. The off-diagonal mixing strength is determined as 105 +-10(experimental) +-40(systematic) keV. Measurements of the reaction 208Pb(p,p') via isobaric analog resonances in 209Bi support the structure information obtained., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Inelastic proton scattering via isobaric analog resonances allows to derive rather complete information about neutron particle-hole states. We applied this method to the doubly-magic nucleus 208Pb by measuring angular distributions of 208Pb(p, p') on top of the isobaric analog resonances in 209Bi with the Q3D magnetic spectrograph at M\"unchen. We identify the six states of the i11/2 f5/2 multiplet and the four states of the i11/2 p3/2 multiplet in the energy range 4.6 MeV < Ex < 5.3 MeV. Firm spin assignments for the ten states are given, some of them new. Additional measurements of the reaction 207Pb(d, p) confirm the fragmented i11/2 p1/2 multiplet., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

The nucleus 49Cr has been studied analysing gamma-gamma coincidences in the reaction 46Ti(alpha,n)49Cr at the bombarding energy of 12 MeV. The level scheme has been greatly extended at low excitation energy and several new lifetimes have been determined by means of the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. Shell model calculations in the full pf configuration space reproduce well negative-parity levels. Satisfactory agreement is obtained for positive parity levels by extending the configuration space to include a nucleon-hole either in the 1d3/2 or in the 2s1/2 orbitals. A nearly one-to-one correspondence is found between experimental and theoretical levels up to an excitation energy of 4 MeV. Experimental data and shell model calculations are interpreted in terms of the Nilsson diagram and the particle-rotor model, showing the strongly coupled nature of the bands in this prolate nucleus. Nine values of K(pi) are proposed for the levels observed in this experiment. As a by-result it is shown that the values of the experimental magnetic moments in 1f7/2 nuclei are well reproduced without quenching the nucleon g-factors., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

It is shown that strong 0+2 -> 0+1 E0 transitions provide a clear signature of phase transitional behavior in finite nuclei. Calculations using the IBA show that these transition strengths exhibit a dramatic and robust increase in spherical-deformed shape transition regions, that this rise matches well the existing data, that the predictions of these E0 transitions remain large in deformed nuclei, and that these properties are intrinsic to the way that collectivity and deformation develop through the phase transitional region in the model, arising from the specific d-boson coherence in the wave functions, and that they do not necessarily require the explicit mixing of normal and intruder configurations from different IBA spaces., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The absolute and the relative quadrupole shape invariants q3 and K3 provide a model independent measure of triaxiality for beta-rigid nuclei. We will show that one can obtain q3 and K3 from a small number of observables. The approximations which are made will be shown to hold within a few percent both in the rigid triaxial rotor model and the interacting boson model. The shape parameter K3 is given for an exemplary set of nuclei and is translated into effective values of the geometrical deformation parameters beta and gamma., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Low-spin states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus 58Cu were investigated with the 58Ni(p,n gamma)58Cu fusion evaporation reaction at the FN-tandem accelerator in Cologne. Seventeen low spin states below 3.6 MeV and 17 new transitions were observed. Ten multipole mixing ratios and 17 gamma-branching ratios were determined for the first time. New detailed spectroscopic information on the 2+,2 state, the Isobaric Analogue State (IAS) of the 2+,1,T=1 state of 58Ni, makes 58Cu the heaviest odd-odd N=Z nucleus with known B(E2;2+,T=1 --> 0+,T=1) value. The 4^+ state at 2.751 MeV, observed here for the first time, is identified as the IAS of the 4+,1,T=1 state in 58Ni. The new data are compared to full pf-shell model calculations with the novel GXPF1 residual interaction and to calculations within a pf5/2 configurational space with a residual surface delta interaction. Low spin states in the self-conjugate even-even nucleus 48-Cr were investigated using the MINIBALL gamma-ray spectrometer. At the FN tandem accelerator in Cologne the 46-Ti(3-He,n) reaction was used for the measurement of gamma-gamma coincidences for an excitation function from 7 to 12 MeV beam energy. 17 excited states were observed, nine for the first time by means of gamma-ray spectroscopy, and new spin assignments were made. Lifetime measurements in the mirror nuclei 47Cr and 47V were performed by means of the Doppler-shift attenuation method using the multidetector array EUROBALL, in conjunction with the ancillary detectors ISIS and the Neutron Wall. The concept of critical points in nuclear phase transitional regions is discussed from the standpoints of Q-invariants, simple observables and wave function entropy. It is shown that these critical points very closely coincide with the turning points of the discussed quantities, establishing the singular character of these points in nuclear phase transition regions between vibrational and rotational nuclei, with a finite number of particles., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, elsart, revised version, considerable changes and additions

A method is developed to derive simple relations among the reduced matrix elements of the quadrupole operator between low-lying collective states. As an example, the fourth order scalars of Q are considered. The accuracy and validity of the proposed relations is checked for the ECQF Hamiltonian of the IBM-1 in the whole parameter space of the Casten triangle. Furthermore these relations are successfully tested for low-lying collective states in nuclei for which all relevant data is available., Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, RevTeX preprint-style

The M1 transitions between low-lying T=1 and T=0 states in deformed odd-odd N=Z nuclei are analyzed in the frames of the rotor-plus-particle model. Using the representation of an explicit coupling of angular momenta we show that strong coupling of the quasideuteron configurations to the axially deformed core results in a distribution of the total 0+ --> 1+ strength among a few low-lying 1+ states. Simple analytical formulae for B(M1) values are derived. The realization of the M1 sum rule for the low-lying 1+,T=0 states is indicated. The calculated B(M1) values are found to be in good agreement with experimental data and reveal specific features of collectivity in odd-odd N=Z nuclei., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, LaTex

The data on low spin states in the odd-odd nucleus 50Mn investigated with the 50Cr(p,ngamma)50Mn fusion evaporation reaction at the FN-TANDEM accelerator in Cologne are reported. Shell model calculations have been performed for the nucleus 94Mo. The calculated excitation energies and electromagnetic properties of low-lying states are in good agreement with the data, which include states with mixed-symmetry (MS) assignments in previous interacting boson model studies. In the shell model large isoscalar E2 matrix elements are found between states with MS assignments indicating that they form a class of states with similar proton-neutron symmetry., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX, Nucl.Phys.A (in press)

In terms of the Interacting Boson Model, shape invariants for the ground state, formed by quadrupole moments up to sixth order, are studied in the dynamical symmetry limits and, for the first time, over the whole structural range of the IBM-1. The results are related to the effective deformation parameters and their fluctuations in the geometrical model. New signatures that can distinguish vibrator and gamma-soft rotor structures, and one that is related to shape coexistence, are identified., Comment: 10 pages, ReVTeX, epsf, 2 Postscript figures included

The odd-mass $^{117}$Sn nucleus was investigated in nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments up to an endpoint energy of the incident photon spectrum of 4.1 MeV at the bremsstrahlung facility of the Stuttgart University. More than 50 mainly hitherto unknown levels were found. From the measurement of the scattering cross sections model independent absolute electric dipole excitation strengths were extracted. The measured angular distributions suggested the spins of 11 excited levels. Quasi-particle phonon model calculations including a complete configuration space were performed for the first time for a heavy odd-mass spherical nucleus. These calculations give a clear insight in the fragmentation and distribution of the $E1$, $M1$, and $E2$ excitation strength in the low energy region. It is proven that the $1^{-}$ component of the two-phonon $[2^{+}_{1} \otimes 3^{-}_{1}]$ quintuplet built on top of the $1/2^{+}$ ground state is strongly fragmented. A nuclear physics example of the U(6/2) supersymmetry group is considered. It is shown that this group contains a supersymmetric subgroup with a structure similar to the SUSY model of the quantum field theory (QFT). A comparison of two models help to clarify the relation between the supersymmetry schemes of QFT and of nuclear physics. Using this similarity a relation between the numbers of the bosonic and fermionic states similar to the fundamental relation in QFT is obtained. For those supermultiplets with at least two fermions the number of the bosonic and fermionic states are equal as in QFT., Comment: 11 pages and one eps-figure. Phys.Rev.C (1999) in press

An angular momentum dependence of the parity splitting in the alternating parity bands of nuclei with strong octupole correlations is considered basing on the model of the octupole motion in a one-dimensional potential well conserving axial symmetry. A sign reversal of the parity splitting at higher values of the angular momentum is interpreted as a result of the Coriolis coupling to K=1 octupole mode. The isovector M1 transitions between low-lying T=1 and T=0 states in odd-odd N=Z nuclei are analyzed. Simple analytical expressions for M1 transition strengths are derived within a single-j-shell approximation for both j=l+1/2 and j=l-1/2 cases. The large B(M1) values for the j=l+1/2 case are attributed to quasi-deuteron configurations. The B(M1) values for the j=l-1/2 case are found to be small due to partly cancellation of spin and orbital parts of the M1 matrix element., Comment: 14 pages, 2 Postscript figures included, ReVTeX, submitted for publication to Physical Review C

The nucleus 94Mo was investigated using a powerful combination of gamma-singles photon scattering experiments and gamma-gamma-coincidence studies following the beta-decay of 94mTc. The data survey short-lived J^pi=1+,2+ states and include branching ratios, E2/M1 mixing ratios, lifetimes, and transition strengths. The mixed-symmetry (MS) 1+ scissors mode and the 2+ MS state are identified from M1 strengths. A gamma transition between MS states was observed and its rate was measured. Nine M1 and E2 strengths involving MS states agree with the O(6) limit of the interacting boson model-2 using the proton boson E2 charge as the only free parameter., Comment: 9 pages, 3 PostScript figures included, ReVTeX, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters, tentatively scheduled for August 9, 1999

Results of nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments on $^{117}$Sn are reported. More than 50 $\gamma$ transitions with $E_{\gamma} < 4$ MeV were detected indicating a strong fragmentation of the electromagnetic excitation strength. For the first time microscopic calculations making use of a complete configuration space for low-lying states are performed in heavy odd-mass spherical nuclei. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the data. It is concluded that although the E1 transitions are the strongest ones also M1 and E2 decays contribute substantially to the observed spectra. In contrast to the neighboring even $^{116-124}$Sn, in $^{117}$Sn the $1^-$ component of the two-phonon $[2^+_1 \otimes 3^-_1]$ quintuplet built on top of the 1/2$^+$ ground state is proved to be strongly fragmented., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The attenuation factor F responsible for the decay out of a superdeformed (SD) band is calculated with the help of a statistical model. This factor is given by 1/F = (1 + Gamma(down) / Gamma(S)). Here, Gamma(S) is the width for the collective E2 transition within the superdeformed band, and Gamma(down) is the spreading width which describes the mixing between a state in the SD band and the normally deformed (ND) states of equal spin. The attenuation factor F is independent of the statistical E1 decay widths Gamma(N) of the ND states provided that the Gamma(N) are much larger than both Gamma(down) and Gamma(S). This condition is generically met. Previously measured values of F are used to determine Gamma(down)., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters

The wavefunctions of the lowest odd spin positive parity yrast states in the IBA are shown to be nearly pure multiple quadrupole-phonon excitations even outside the three dynamical symmetries. The empirical data for collective nuclei with 30 < Z < 80 confirm these predictions. The quadrupole-phonon purity of the 2^+_1 state can be measured from E2-branching ratios of the 3^+_1 state. These data show a high correlation to the 2^+_1 Q-phonon purity deduced from the E2-decay of 2^+ states., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures
