Abstract

BackgroundHIV and HCV have been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Their impact on long-term outcomes following ST-segment myocardial infarction (STEMI) has not been previously studied.MethodsWe leveraged data from a STEMI registry (n = 1208) at an inner-city health system to assess the influence of HIV and HCV on post-STEMI outcomes. Cox regression was used to compare HIV-monoinfected (n = 22), HCV-monoinfected (n = 26) and HIV-HCV-coinfected patients (n = 8) with the neither-infected group (n = 1152) with regard to death, death or any readmission, and death or CVD readmission.ResultsThe cohort was majority black or Hispanic. Median follow-up was 4.3 years. Compared to the neither-infected group, the HIV-monoinfected group showed near-significantly higher risks of death or any readmission (HR = 1.62, 95% CI = 0.96, 2.74) and death or CVD readmission (HR = 1.82, 95% CI = 0.98, 3.39) after full adjustment. On similar comparison, the HCV-monoinfected group exhibited significantly higher risks of death (HR = 2.09, 95% CI = 1.05, 4.15) and death or any readmission (HR = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.07, 2.65), whereas the HIV-HCV-coinfected group showed higher risk of death (HR = 6.51, 95% CI = 2.28, 18.61).ConclusionsIn this cohort composed mostly of race-ethnic minorities, HIV monoinfection tended to be associated with 1.6-to-1.8-fold higher risk of death or readmission for any cause or CVD over long-term follow-up compared to neither infection, whereas HCV monoinfection was associated with 1.7-to-2.1-fold higher risk of death and death or any readmission, and HIV-HCV coinfection with 6.5-fold higher risk of death. These associations require further study in larger populations, but highlight the importance of identifying and treating HIV and HCV in patients presenting with STEMI.

11. Technique of laser calibration for wavelength-modulation spectroscopy with application to proton exchange membrane fuel cell measurements

Abstract

A diode laser sensor was developed for partial pressure and temperature measurements using a single water vapor transition. The Lorentzian half-width and line intensity of the transition were calibrated for conditions relevant to proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell operation. Comparison of measured and simulated harmonics from wavelength-modulation spectroscopy is shown to yield accuracy of [+ or -] 2.5% in water vapor partial pressure and [+ or -] 3[degrees]C in temperature despite the use of a single transition over a narrow range of temperatures. Collisional half-widths in air or hydrogen are measured so that calibrations can be applied to both anode and cathode channels of a PEM fuel cell. An in situ calibration of the nonlinear impact of modulation on laser wavelength is presented and used to improve the accuracy of the numerical simulation of the signal. Abstract

Modern manufacturing systems are highly automated and require distributed architectures in order to integrate enterprise-wide planning and decision making while providing scalability. In this paper, we introduce an architecture for scheduling and controlling a manufacturing system using distributed objects. We design a cell object, which encapsulates data and methods for scheduling and controlling the cell resources. New jobs entering the manufacturing system are allocated to cells based on schedules computed in real time by these distributed cell objects. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach through empirical trials that compare it to scheduling and job dispatching using other methods. Abstract

Un fragment de moule à sigillée a été découvert en 2004 à Marcilly-sur-Vienne, à proximité de l’agglomération gallo-romaine, avec ateliers de potiers, de Nouâtre (Indre-et-Loire). Il correspond aux productions de sigillée du groupe dit du Centre-Ouest, sans doute du début du iie s. Des comparaisons stylistiques sont montrées avec les productions de sigillée du centre de la Gaule, et notamment des Martres-de-Veyre. A fragment of a mold for sigillata was discovered in 2004 in Marcilly-sur-Vienne, near the Gallo-Roman agglomeration, with workshops of potters, of Nouâtre (Indre-et-Loire). It corresponds to sigillata productions of the group called Centre-Ouest, probably from the beginning of the second century. Stylistic comparisons are shown with the sigillata productions of the center of Gaul, and in particular of Martres-de-Veyre.

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine an exact and approximate optimal solution for resolving economic process levels. The study focuses on acceptance sampling by variables under control by MIL-STD-414-B and considers the development of an equation for measuring such process levels with known variability. Results show that a simple computation can be derived for determining optimal process levels for the given control factor.

Abstract

A distinguishing feature of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is the ability to perform multiple tasks in one machine or workstation (alternative machining) and the ability to process parts according to more than one sequence of operations (alternative sequencing). In this paper, we address the issue of deadlock avoidance in systems having these characteristics. A deadlock-free and maximally permissive control policy that incorporates this flexibility is developed based on finite automata models of part process plans and the FMS. The resulting supervisory controller is used for dynamic evaluation of deadlock avoidance based on the remaining processing requirements of the parts. Abstract

One of the characteristics of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS's) is that they can consider multiple part routings due to alternate machining and alternate sequencing in the processing of parts. This paper presents a new architecture based on colored Petri nets (CPN's) that allows the supervisory controller of a flexible manufacturing cell to consider alternate machining and alternate sequencing in real time control of the cell. This capability for real time alternate routing is an extension of prior research on the application of CPN to modeling FMS's.

Abstract

International audience; The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) investigation on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover has detected oxidized nitrogen-bearing compounds during pyrolysis of scooped aeolian sediments and drilled sedimentary deposits within Gale crater. Total N concentrations ranged from 20 to 250 nmol N per sample. After subtraction of known N sources in SAM, our results support the equivalent of 110–300 ppm of nitrate in the Rocknest (RN) aeolian samples, and 70–260 and 330–1,100 ppm nitrate in John Klein (JK) and Cumberland (CB) mudstone deposits, respectively. Discovery of indigenous martian nitrogen in Mars surface materials has important implications for habitability and, specifically, for the potential evolution of a nitrogen cycle at some point in martian history. The detection of nitrate in both wind-drifted fines (RN) and in mudstone (JK, CB) is likely a result of N2 fixation to nitrate generated by thermal shock from impact or volcanic plume lightning on ancient Mars. Fixed nitrogen could have facilitated the development of a primitive nitrogen cycle on the surface of ancient Mars, potentially providing a biochemically accessible source of nitrogen.

Abstract

An integrated design for the CRAMTD Pouch Line was successfully developed and implemented. The design brings together the control of the filling, packaging, and crate loading operations under a single controller. The design provides a complete level 2 control system through the implementation of a production line controller ('Centralized Control Station'), which can be implemented as a stand alone module. The design also provides hooks to level 3 and level 4 automation through the implementation of a shop floor SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) node. These demonstrations showed that this integrated design is feasible and could be considered by an industrial company for implementation in a commercial plant., Prepared in cooperation with Cook College N.J. Agricultural Experiment Station.

Abstract

Modern manufacturing systems are highly automated and require distributed architectures in order to integrate enterprise-wide planning and decision making while providing scalability. In this paper, we introduce an architecture for scheduling and controlling a manufacturing system using distributed objects. We design a cell object, which encapsulates data and methods for scheduling and controlling the cell resources. New jobs entering the manufacturing system are allocated to cells based on schedules computed in real time by these distributed cell objects. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach through empirical trials that compare it to scheduling and job dispatching using other methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In Spring 2020, the United States epicenter of COVID-19 was New York City, in which the borough of the Bronx was particularly affected. This Fall, there has been a resurgence of COVID-19 in Europe and the Midwestern United States. We describe our experience transforming our cardiac catheterization laboratories to accommodate an influx of COVID-19 patients so as to provide other hospitals with a potential blueprint. We transformed our pre/postprocedural patient care areas into COVID-19 intensive care and step-down units and maintained emergent invasive care for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction using existing space and personnel.
