We consider the resonant Casimir-Polder interaction of an excited alkali-type atom which has a single (electric dipole) transition with a Chern insulator. The Chern insulator has a nonzero, time reversal symmetry breaking Hall conductance, leading to an additional contribution to the resonant Casimir-Polder interaction which depends on the coupling between the Hall conductance and the circular polarization state of the atomic transition. We find that the resonant Casimir-Polder shift can be significantly enhanced for de-excitation frequencies near values associated with the van Hove singularities of the Chern insulator. Furthermore, we find that the resonant Casimir-Polder force can become monotonically decaying and repulsive for a relatively large atom-surface distance, if the atomic dipole transition is right circularly polarized and the Chern number of the Chern insulator is $-1$ or the atomic dipole transition is left circularly polarized and the Chern number is $1$., Accepted by The European Physical Journal D. 20 pages, 13 figures, 5 appendices (1 new)

We model a cholesteric liquid crystal as a planar uniaxial multilayer system, where the orientation of each layer differs slightly from that of the adjacent one. This allows us to analytically simplify the otherwise acutely complicated calculation of the Casimir-Lifshitz torque. Numerical results differ appreciably from the case of nematic liquid crystals, which can be treated like bloc birefringent media. In particular, we find that the torque deviates considerably from its usual sinusoidal behavior as a function of the misalignment angle. In the case of a birefringent crystal faced with a cholesteric liquid one, the Casimir-Lifshitz torque decreases more slowly as a function of distance than in the nematic case. In the case of two cholesteric liquid crystals, either in the homochiral or in the heterochiral configuration, the angular dependence changes qualitatively as a function of distance. In all considered cases, finite pitch length effects are most pronounced at distances of about 10 nm. We consider the generic problem of a two-level quantum emitter near a two-dimensional Chern insulator in the dipole approximation, and study how the frequency-dependent response and electronic density of states of the insulator modifies the transition rate of the emitter between the ground and excited levels. To this end, we obtain the full real-frequency behavior of the conductivity tensor by performing a tight-binding calculation based on the Qi-Wu-Zhang model and using a Kubo formula, and derive the full electromagnetic Green tensor of the system, which breaks Onsager reciprocity. This enables us to find that for frequencies smaller than the maximum band gap, the system is sensitive to time reversal symmetry-breaking, whereas for much larger frequencies the system becomes insensitive, with implications for the discrimination of the state of a circularly polarised dipole emitter. We also study the impact of a van Hove singularity on the surface-induced correction to the transition rate, finding that it can enhance its amplitude by a few orders of magnitude compared to the case where the conductivity is set to its static value. By considering configurations in which the dipole is circularly polarised or parallel with the surface of the Chern insulator, we find that the surface correction to the transition rate can exhibit a novel decay with sine integral-like oscillations., 23 pages, 11 figures

An atom in front of a surface is one of the simplest and fundamental problem in physics. Yet, it allows testing quantum electrodynamics, while providing potential platforms and interfaces for quantum technologies. Despite, its simplicity, combined with strong scientific and technological interests, atom-surface physics, at its fundamental level, remains largely unexplored mainly because of challenges associated with precise control of the atom-surface distance. Nevertheless, substantial breakthroughs have been made over the last two decades. With the development of cold and quantum atomic gases, one has gained further control on atom-surface position, naturally leading to improved precision in the Casimir-Polder interaction measurement. Advances have also been reported in finding experimental knobs to tune and even reverse the Casimir-Polder interaction strength. So far, this has only been achieved for atoms in short-lived excited states, however, the rapid progresses in material sciences, e.g. metamaterials and topological materials have inspired new ideas for controlling the atom-surface interaction in long-lived states. In addition, combining nano-photonic and atom-surface physics is now envisioned for applications in quantum information processing. The first purpose of this review is to give a general overview on the latest experimental developments in atom-surface physics. The second main objective is to sketch a vision of the future of the field, mainly inspired by the abundant theoretical works and proposals available now in the literature., Comment: Review paper 43 pages, 6 figures

More than forty years ago, Barash published a calculation of the full retarded Casimir-Lifshitz torque for planar birefringent media with arbitrary degrees of anisotropy. An independent theoretical confirmation has been lacking since. We report a systematic and transparent derivation of the torque between two media with both electric and magnetic birefringence. Our approach, based on an eigenmode decomposition of Maxwell's equations, generalizes Barash's result for electrically birefringent materials, and can be generalized to a wide range of anisotropic materials and finite thickness effects., 20 pages and 2 figures

Debye charging method is generalized to study the linear response properties of the asymmetric primitive model for electrolytes. Analytic results are obtained for the effective charge distributions of constituent ions inside the electrolyte, from which all static linear response properties of the system follow. It is found that, as the ion density increases, both the screening length and the dielectric constant receive substantial renormalization due to ionic correlations. Furthermore, the valence of larger ion is substantially renormalized upward by ionic correlations, while those of smaller ions remain approximately the same. For sufficiently high density, the system exhibits charge oscillations. The threshold ion density for charge oscillation is much lower than the corresponding values for symmetric electrolytes. Our results agree well with large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, and find good agreement in general, except for the case of small ion sizes ( $$d = 4\,\AA $$ ) near the charge oscillation threshold.

We investigate the character of the van der Waals (vdW) torque and force between two coplanar and dielectrically anisotropic topological insulator (TI) slabs separated by a vacuum gap in the non-retardation regime, where the optic axes of the slabs are each perpendicular to the normal direction to the slab-gap interface and also generally differently oriented from each other. We find that in addition to the magnetoelectric coupling strength, the anisotropy can also influence the sign of the vdW force, viz., a repulsive vdW force can become attractive if the anistropy is increased sufficiently. In addition, the vdW force oscillates as a function of the angular difference between the optic axes of the TI slabs, being most repulsive/least attractive (least repulsive/most attractive) for angular differences that are integer (half-integer) multiples of $\pi$. Our third finding is that the vdW torque for TI slabs is generally weaker than that for ordinary dielectric slabs. Our work provides the first instance in which the vector potential appears in a calculation of the vdW interaction for which the limit is non-retarded or static., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We propose an approach to a multiscale problem in the theory of thermotropic uniaxial nematics based on the method of statistical field theory. This approach enables us to relate the coefficients A, B, C, L1, and L2 of the Landau-de Gennes free energy for the isotropic-nematic phase transition to the parameters of a molecular model of uniaxial nematics, which we take to be a lattice gas model of nematogenic molecules interacting via a short-ranged potential. We obtain general constraints on the temperature and volume fraction of nematogens for the Landau-de Gennes theory to be stable against molecular orientation fluctuations at quartic order. In particular, for the case of a fully occupied lattice, we compute the values of the isotropic-nematic transition temperature and the order parameter discontinuity predicted by (i) a continuum approximation of the nearest-neighbor Lebwohl-Lasher model and (ii) a Lebwohl-Lasher-type model with a nematogenic interaction of finite range. We find that the predictions of (i) are in reasonably good agreement with known results of Monte Carlo simulation. Published version

In net-neutral systems correlations between charge fluctuations generate strong attractive thermal Casimir forces and engineering these forces to optimize nanodevice performance is an important challenge. We show how the normal and lateral thermal Casimir forces between two plates containing Brownian charges can be modulated by decorrelating the system through the application of an electric field, which generates a nonequilibrium steady state with a constant current in one or both plates, reducing the ensuing fluctuation-generated normal force while at the same time generating a lateral drag force. We have studied ion-specific effects of monovalent salts on coexisting liquid-ordered (Lo)/liquid-disordered (Ld) domains using small-angle X-ray scattering. In particular, we focused on nanoscopic changes in domain properties in mixtures of dioleophosphatidylcholine, distearophosphatidylcholine and cholesterol brought about by Cl-, Br- and I- at various concentrations. Global data analysis in terms of the scattering length density model resulted in highly-resolved data on domain thickness, area per lipid and bending fluctuations in Lo and Ld domains. In accordance with previous experiments on homogenous bilayers changes in structural parameters within a given phase – either Lo, or Ld – follow the well-known Hofmeister series (Cl-< Br-< I-). Interestingly, however, these effects are expressed to different levels in coexisting Lo/Ld domains. In particular, Ld domains are much more susceptible to ion-specific interactions than Lo domains. For example the area per lipid decreases rapidly for Ld domains but not for Lo domains. This suggests a significant role of the ionic composition of the aqueous phase in structuring complex lipid membranes.

We analyse van der Waals interactions between a pair of dielectrically anisotropic plane-layered media interacting across a dielectrically isotropic solvent medium. We develop a general formalism based on transfer matrices to investigate the van der Waals torque and force in the limit of weak birefringence and dielectric matching between the ordinary axes of the anisotropic layers and the solvent. We apply this formalism to study the following systems: (i) a pair of single anisotropic layers, (ii) a single anisotropic layer interacting with a multilayered slab consisting of alternating anisotropic and isotropic layers, and (iii) a pair of multilayered slabs each consisting of alternating anisotropic and isotropic layers, looking at the cases where the optic axes lie parallel and/or perpendicular to the plane of the layers. For the first case, the optic axes of the oppositely facing anisotropic layers of the two interacting slabs generally possess an angular mismatch, and within each multilayered slab the optic axes may either be the same, or undergo constant angular increments across the anisotropic layers. In particular, we examine how the behaviors of the van der Waals torque and force can be "tuned" by adjusting the layer thicknesses, the relative angular increment within each slab, and the angular mismatch between the slabs., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

The self-consistent field theory (SCFT) is used to study the mean potential near a charged plate inside a $m:-n$ electrolyte. A perturbation series is developed in terms of $g = 4 \pi b/\ell_{\rm {\scriptscriptstyle DB}}$, where $b, \ell_{\rm{\scriptscriptstyle DB}}$ are Bjerrum length and {\em bare} Debye length respectively. To the zeroth order, we obtain nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann theory. For asymmetric electrolytes ($m \neq n$), the first order (one-loop) correction to mean potential contains a {\em secular term}, which indicates the breakdown of regular perturbation method. Using a renormalizaton group transformation (RG), we remove the secular term and obtain a globally well-behaved one-loop approximation with {\em a renormalized Debye length} and {\em a renormalized surface charge density}. Furthermore, we find that if the counter-ions are multivalent, the surface charge density is renormalized substantially {\em downwards}, and may undergo a change of sign, if the bare surface charge density is sufficiently large., Comment: 14 pages, 2 pdf figures

We study thermal, fluctuation-induced hydrodynamic interaction forces in a classical, compressible, viscous fluid confined between two rigid, planar walls with no-slip boundary conditions. We calculate hydrodynamic fluctuations using the linearized, stochastic Navier-Stokes formalism of Landau and Lifshitz. The mean fluctuation-induced force acting on the fluid boundaries vanishes in this system, so we evaluate the two-point, time-dependent force correlations. The equal-time correlation function of the forces acting on a single wall gives the force variance, which we show to be finite and independent of the plate separation at large inter-plate distances. The equal-time, cross-plate force correlation, on the other hand, decays with the inverse inter-plate distance and is independent of the fluid viscosity at large distances; it turns out to be negative over the whole range of plate separations, indicating that the two bounding plates are subjected to counter-phase correlations. We show that the time-dependent force correlations exhibit damped temporal oscillations for small plate separations and a more irregular oscillatory behavior at large separations. We study the thermal fluctuation induced interactions between two surfaces containing Brownian charges which are held at different temperatures. Using a dynamical form of Debye-H\"uckel theory implemented within the stochastic equation for the density of mobile Brownian charges, we derive expressions for the average force between the two surfaces as well as its variance. A self-consistent theory is proposed for the general problem of interacting undulating fluid membranes subject to the constraint that they do not interpenetrate. We implement the steric constraint via an exact functional integral representation, and through the use of a saddle-point approximation transform it into a novel effective steric potential. The steric potential is found to consist of two contributions: one generated by zero mode fluctuations of the membranes, and the other by thermal bending fluctuations. For membranes of cross-sectional area $S$, we find that the bending fluctuation part scales with the inter-membrane separation $d$ as $d^{-2}$ for $d \ll \sqrt{S}$, but crosses over to $d^{-4}$ scaling for $d \gg \sqrt{S}$, whereas the zero mode part of the steric potential always scales as $d^{-2}$. For membranes interacting exclusively via the steric potential, we obtain closed-form expressions for the effective interaction potential and for the rms undulation amplitude $\sigma$, which becomes small at low temperatures $T$ and/or large bending stiffnesses $\kappa$. Moreover, $\sigma$ scales as $d$ for $d \ll \sqrt{S}$, but saturates at $\sqrt{k_{{\rm B}} T S/\kappa}$ for $d \gg \sqrt{S}$. In addition, using variational Gaussian theory, we apply our self-consistent treatment to study inter-membrane interactions subject to three different types of potential: (i)~the Moreira-Netz potential for a pair of strongly charged membranes with an intervening solution of multivalent counterions, (ii)~an attractive square well, (iii)~the Morse potential, and (iv)~a combination of hydration and van der Waals interactions., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

We consider the van der Waals interaction between a pair of polymers with quenched heterogeneous sequences of local polarizabilities along their backbones, and study the effective pairwise interaction energy for both stiff polymers and flexible Gaussian coils. In particular, we focus on the cases where the pair of polarizability sequences are (i)~distinct and (ii)~identical. We find that the pairwise interaction energies of distinct and identical Gaussian coils are both isotropic and exhibit the same decay behavior for separations larger than the gyration radius, in contradistinction to the orientationally anisotropic interaction energies of distinct and identical stiff polymers. We analytically calculate the correlation potential of a test ion near a \emph{strongly} charged plate inside a dilute $m:-n$ electrolyte. We do this by calculating the electrostatic Green's function in the presence of a nonlinear background potential, the latter having been obtained using the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann theory. We consider the general case where the dielectric constants of the plate and the electrolyte are distinct. The following generic results emerge from our analyses: (1) If the distance to the plate $\Delta z$ is much larger than a Gouy-Chapman length, the plate surface will behave effectively as an infinitely charged surface, and the dielectric constant of the plate effectively plays no role. (2) If $\Delta z$ is larger than a Gouy-Chapman length but shorter than a Debye length, the correlation potential can be interpreted in terms of an image charge that is three times larger than the source charge. This behavior is independent of the valences of the ions. (3) The Green's function vanishes inside the plate if the surface charge density is infinitely large; hence the electrostatic potential is constant there. In this respect, a strongly charged plate behaves like a conductor plate. (4) If $\Delta z$ is smaller than a Gouy-Chapman length, the correlation potential is dominated by the conventional image charge due to the dielectric discontinuity at the interface. (5) If $\Delta z$ is larger than a Debye length, the leading order behavior of the correlation potential will depend on the valences of the ions in the electrolyte. Furthermore, inside an \emph{asymmetric} electrolyte, the correlation potential is \emph{singly} screened, i.e., it undergoes exponential decay with a decay width equal to the Debye length., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures

We address the statistical mechanics of randomly and permanently crosslinked networks. We develop a theoretical framework (vulcanization theory) which can be used to systematically analyze the correlation between the statistical properties of random networks and their histories of formation. Generalizing the original idea of Deam and Edwards, we consider an instantaneous crosslinking process, where all crosslinkers (modeled as Gaussian springs) are introduced randomly at once in an equilibrium liquid state, referred to as the preparation state. The probability that two functional sites are crosslinked by a spring exponentially decreases with their distance squared. After formally averaging over network connectivity, we obtained an effective theory with all degrees of freedom replicated 1 + n times. Two thermodynamic ensembles, the preparation ensemble and the measurement ensemble, naturally appear in this theory. The former describes the thermodynamic fluctuations in the state of preparation, while the latter describes the thermodynamic fluctuations in the state of measurement. We classify various correlation functions and discuss their physical significances. In particular, the memory correlation functions characterize how the properties of networks depend on their history of formation, and are the hallmark properties of all randomly crosslinked materials. We clarify the essential difference between our approach and that of Deam-Edwards, discuss the saddle-point order parameters and its physical significance. Isotropic-genesis nematic elastomers (IGNEs) are liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) that have been randomly, permanently cross-linked in the high-temperature state so as to form an equilibrium random solid. Thus, instead of being free to diffuse throughout the entire volume, as they would be in the liquid state, the constituent LCPs in an IGNE are mobile only over a finite length-scale controlled by the density of cross-links. We address the effects that such network-induced localization have on the liquid-crystalline characteristics of an IGNE, as probed via measurements made at high temperatures. In contrast with the case of uncross-linked LCPs, for IGNEs these characteristics are determined not only by thermal fluctuations but also by the quenched disorder associated with the cross-link constraints. To study IGNEs, we consider a microscopic model of dimer nematogens in which the dimers interact via orientation-dependent excluded volume forces. The dimers are, furthermore, randomly, permanently cross-linked via short Hookean springs, the statistics of which we model by means of a Deam-Edwards type of distribution. We show that at length-scales larger than the size of the nematogens this approach leads to a recently proposed phenomenological Landau theory of IGNEs [Lu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 257803 (2012)], and hence predicts a regime of short-ranged oscillatory spatial correlations in the nematic alignment, of both thermal and glassy types. In addition, we consider two alternative microscopic models of IGNEs: (i) a wormlike chain model of IGNEs that are formed via the cross-linking of side-chain LCPs; and (ii) a jointed chain model of IGNEs that are formed via the cross-linking of main-chain LCPs. We consider the impact of the elastomer network on the nematic structure and fluctuations in isotropic-genesis nematic elastomers, via a phenomenological model that underscores the role of network compliance. The model contains a network-mediated nonlocal interaction as well as a new kind of random field that reflects the memory of the nematic order present at network formation and also encodes local anisotropy due to localized nematogenic polymers. This model enables us to predict regimes of short-ranged oscillatory spatial correlations (thermal and glassy) in the nematic alignment.

We analyze van der Waals interactions between two rigid polymers with sequence-specific, anisotropic polarizabilities along the polymer backbones, so that the dipole moments fluctuate parallel to the polymer backbones. Assuming that each polymer has a quenched-in polarizability sequence which reflects, for example, the polynucleotide sequence of a double-stranded DNA molecule, we study the van der Waals interaction energy between a pair of such polymers with rod-like structure for the cases where their respective polarizability sequences are (i) distinct and (ii) identical, with both zero and non-zero correlation length of the polarizability correlator along the polymer backbones in the latter case. For identical polymers, we find a novel $r^{-5}$ scaling behavior of the van der Waals interaction energy for small inter-polymer separation $r$, in contradistinction to the $r^{-4}$ scaling behavior of distinct polymers, with furthermore a pronounced angular dependence favoring attraction between sufficiently aligned identical polymers.
