Research Question: What is the situation of iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) and salt consumption in Jammu region? Hypothesis: The prevalence of IDD has decreased markedly as a result of medical as well as socio-economic factors. Objective: To assess the magnitude of IDD in Jammu region and also assess the salt consumption patterns in the region. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Primary schools in both urban and rural areas. Study Tools: Clinical examination of study population for goiter, laboratory assessment of casual urine sample for urinary iodine estimation of I 2 content of salt samples collected from sub-samples of study population. Participants: School children in the age group of 6-12 years were selected for study using WHO 30-cluster methodology, urine samples were collected from 15% of selected children and salt samples from 5% of sub-sample. Ethical Concern: No ethical issues were involved. Results: An overall goiter prevalence of 11.98% was observed in the region. Females had a prevalence of 16.1% and males 10.1%. The median urinary iodine excretion in the region was 96.5 µg/l (range: 29.0-190.0 µg/l). Forty-nine percent of subjects had biochemical iodine deficiency with 6.7% having moderate and 42.53% mild iodine deficiency. In Jammu region, 74.47% of households consume powdered salt with 98.17% powdered salt samples having an I 2 content of greater than 15 ppm. Conclusion: Iodine deficiency remains a public health problem in the region, though the region seems to be in a state of nutritional transition from iodine deficiency to iodine sufficiency.

Primary erythromelalgia is characterized by burning pain, redness, and warmth in the extremities. We present two cases of primary erythromelalgia both of whom presented with a history of several months of severe burning pain in both hands and feet. Both patients had received multiple pain medications with no improvement in symptoms. Pain was relieved by putting affected parts in ice cold water, which resulted in immersion injury of the affected parts. Both patients stopped taking part in school and social activities. We tried oral mexiletine, a class Ib antiarrythmic agent, in view of its reported role in various chronic painful conditions. Dramatic improvement was observed with its use. Both patients improved after several weeks of use, and there were fewer soaking episodes. We observed no adverse effects with mexilitine therapy.

In addition, they are biodegradable, readily available, and eco-friendly, thus making them a preferable choice over traditional oil cleaning materials. This study explores the phenomenal properties of the floating Azolla fern ( Azolla pinnata ), focusing on its unique hierarchical leaf surface design at both the microscale and nanoscale levels. These intricate structures endow the fern with exceptional characteristics, including superhydrophobicity, high water adhesion, and remarkable oil or organic solvent absorption capabilities. Azolla's leaf surface exhibits a rare combination of dual wettability, where hydrophilic spots on a superhydrophobic base enable the pinning of water droplets, even when positioned upside-down. This extraordinary property, known as the parahydrophobic state, is rare in floating plants, akin to the renowned Salvinia molesta , setting Azolla apart as a natural wonder. Submerged in water, Azolla leaves excel at absorbing light oils at the air-water interface, demonstrating a notable ability to extract high-density organic solvents. Moreover, Azolla's rapid growth, doubling in the area every 4-5 days, especially in flowing waters, positions it as a sustainable alternative to traditional synthetic oil-cleaning materials with long-term environmental repercussions. Perivascular spaces surround the small arteries and veins as they enter into the brain parenchyma from the subarachnoid spaces. Also called as Virchow-Robin spaces, these are prominent in the basal ganglia and high convexity white matter of the elderly. Occasionally VR spaces may get massively enlarged and may mimic a cystic mass lesion. The typical CSF-like signal intensity of the cysts and location on MRI, in the absence of a neurological abnormality help in the diagnosis of the giant VR spaces and thus biopsy is avoided. Typically there is no significant adjacent brain abnormality; however FLAIR images may sometimes reveal perilesional white matter hyperintensity, which may be an indication of gliosis due to the mass effect of the lesion. Such a signal alteration should not deter one from making a diagnosis of giant Virchow-Robin spaces when the rest of the imaging findings are typical. We describe a case of a 50-year-old female with incidental giant Virchow-Robin spaces in the right hemispheric subcortical white matter with adjacent white matter hyperintense signal intensity on T2-weighted and FLAIR images.
