The growth of deep learning technologies allows us to achieve higher accuracy in the classification of plant diseases, as well as in other domains. This research reveals the performance of several DL approaches, including custom convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and models which are pre-trained namely VGG16 and ResNet34, which were used for the recognition of diseases in plants that are depicted through the images. These models may obtain the necessary growing environment for training and assessing the models by using a publicly accessible dataset that includes pictures of both healthy and diseased plants, in total there are 14 unique plants used. The results of the experiment suggest that all the models combinedly gave 98.46% accuracy in the classification of diverse plant diseases. In addition to this, the paper discusses the hyperparameters like learning rate and optimizer choice that affect the model furthermore, the project discusses the methods involved in training deep learning models on GPU devices computationally speaking. Thereby, this project can be added to the field of agriculture vision by showing that deep learning methods are good for plant disease classification.

Purpose: To describe the construction and diagnostic accuracy of a modularized, virtual reality (VR)-based, pupillometer for detecting relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) in unilateral optic neuropathies, vis-à-vis, clinical grading by experienced neuro-ophthalmologists., Methods: Protocols for the swinging flashlight test and pupillary light response analysis used in a previous stand-alone pupillometer was integrated into the hardware of a Pico Neo 2 Eye ® VR headset with built-in eye tracker. Each eye of 77 cases (mean ± 1SD age: 39.1 ± 14.9yrs) and 77 age-similar controls were stimulated independently thrice for 1sec at 125lux light intensity, followed by 3sec of darkness. RAPD was quantified as the ratio of the direct reflex of the stronger to the weaker eye. Device performance was evaluated using standard ROC analysis., Results: The median (25th - 75th quartiles) pupil constriction of the affected eye of cases was 38% (17 - 23%) smaller than their fellow eye (p<0.001), compared to an interocular difference of +/-6% (3 - 15%) in controls. The sensitivity of RAPD detection was 78.5% for the entire dataset and it improved to 85.1% when the physiological asymmetries in the bilateral pupillary miosis were accounted for. Specificity and the area under ROC curve remained between 81 - 96.3% across all analyses., Conclusions: RAPD may be successfully quantified in unilateral neuro-ophthalmic pathology using a VR-technology-based modularized pupillometer. Purpose: Do one-eyed (uniocular) humans use monocular depth cues differently from those with intact binocularity to perform depth-related visuomotor tasks that emulate complex activities of daily living? If so, does performance depend on the participant's age, duration of uniocularity and head movements?, Methods: Forty-five uniocular cases (age range 6-37 years; 2.4 months-31.0 years of uniocularity) and 46 age-similar binocular controls performed a task that required them to pass a hoop around an electrified wire convoluted in depth multiple times, while avoiding contact as indicated by auditory feedback. The task was performed with and without head restraint, in random order. The error rate and speed were calculated from the frequency of contact between the hoop and wire and the total task duration (adjusting for error time), respectively, all determined from video recordings of the task. Head movements were analyzed from the videos using face-tracking software., Results: Error rate decreased with age (P < 0.001) until the late teen years while speed revealed no such trend. Across all ages, the error rate increased and speed decreased in the absence of binocularity (P < 0.001). There was no additional error reduction with duration of uniocularity (P = 0.16). Head movements provided no advantage to task performance, despite generating parallax disparities comparable to binocular viewing., Conclusions: Performance in a dynamic, depth-related visuomotor task is reduced in the absence of binocular viewing, independent of age-related performance level. This study finds no evidence for a prolonged experience with monocular depth cues being advantageous for such tasks over transient loss of binocularity.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine changes in spatial and depth vision with increasing severity of keratoconus and to model the structure-function relationship to identify distinct phases of loss in visual function with disease severity., Methods: Best-spectacle corrected, monocular high-contrast visual acuity, contrast sensitivity function (CSF) and stereoacuity of 155 cases (16-31 years) with mild to advanced bilateral keratoconus was determined using standard psychophysical tests. Disease severity was quantified using the multimetric D-index. The structure-function relationship was modeled using linear, positive exponential, negative exponential, and logistic nonlinear regression equations., Results: The logistic regression model explained the highest proportion of variance for spatial vision, without bias in the residual plots (R2 ≥ 66%, P < 0.001). Visual acuity showed a distinct ceiling phase and a steeper loss rate with increasing D-index (1.8 units/D-index) in this model. The area under the CSF lacked this ceiling phase and had a shallower loss rate (0.28 units/D-index). Stereoacuity loss with D-index was poorly explained by all models tested (P ≤ 0.2). Cases with lower and bilaterally symmetric D-index had better stereoacuity (181.6-376 arc seconds) than those with higher D-index (>400 arc second); both were significantly poorer than controls (approximately 30 arc second)., Conclusions: Vision loss in keratoconus varies with the visual function parameter tested. Contrast sensitivity may be an earlier indicator of spatial vision loss than visual acuity. Depth perception is significantly deteriorated from very early stages of the disease., Translational Relevance: The study outcomes may be used to forecast longitudinal vision loss in keratoconus and to apply appropriate interventions for timely preservation/enhancement of vulnerable visual functions.

Optical defocus in human eyes is seldom steady during naturalistic steady-state viewing. It fluctuates by 0.3 to 0.5 diopters (D) from accommodative microfluctuations and by 1.5 to 2.5 D in dysfunctions such as spasm of near reflex, both with ≤2 Hz low-pass frequency spectra. This study observed losses in monocular visual acuity of cyclopleged adults who encountered varying amplitude (0.25-2.0 D) and temporal frequency (0.25-2.0 Hz) combinations of sinusoidal defoci induced using an electrically tunable lens. Visual acuity, recorded for 300-ms flashes of Sloan optotype presentation using the method of constant stimuli, deteriorated with defocus amplitude at a rate steeper for lower than higher temporal frequencies. A template matching model of acuity, incorporating optical and neural low-pass filters, neural noise, and a cross-correlated decision operator, showed the best match with empirical data when acuity was governed by the minimum defocus available during optotype display. This criterion minimized acuity loss for higher temporal frequencies due to the increased probability of zero-defocus encounters within the presentation duration. Other decision criteria such as defocus averaging across the entire or parts of the presentation duration yielded less satisfactory results. These results imply that vision loss in humans encountering broadband time-varying defocus is dictated by the dominant low frequencies, with higher frequencies largely compensated using the least defocus decision strategy.

Binocular summation of luminance contrast signals in the spatial domain has been investigated in many studies, but less attention has been paid to the analogous interactions in the temporal domain. The present study determined the impact of monocular sensitivity on the binocular detection of luminance-modulated flickering stimuli. Binocular summation ratios (BSRs) were determined in 13 visually-normal adults for a range of monocular flicker modulation thresholds (FMTs), generated by changing stimulus size (7'- 60') and luminance (mesopic and photopic). Monocular and binocular FMTs were measured at the point of regard and in each of the four quadrants at 5° eccentricity for each target size and luminance using the Flicker-Plus test. Monocular and binocular FMT's increased with decreasing target size for all retinal locations (p<0.001), and were overall larger for mesopic than for photopic condition (p<0.001). BSRs for mesopic (mean±SD: 1.50±0.21) and photopic (1.60±0.24) stimuli were greater than unity (p<0.001), with the latter showing larger estimates than former (p<0.001). BSRs showed no significant trend across target sizes for both luminance conditions (p>0.12). The results demonstrate that the visual system successfully summates inputs from the two eyes to enhance flicker detection, independent of their absolute monocular detection thresholds. These findings may serve as a predictive baseline for further experiments designed to determine how other stimulus properties and interocular differences in monocular thresholds may affect the binocular perception of flicker., Competing Interests: JLB is the director of City Occupational Ltd. Accommodative responses of humans operate seamlessly to ensure clear vision of targets at different viewing distances, up until the onset of presbyopia. To achieve this, the visual system must correctly decipher the polarity and magnitude of retinal defocus in real-time, and often under very challenging viewing conditions. The past seven decades of research in this area has identified several retinotopic cues that may potentially provide the desired odd- and even-error information to the visual system for solving these challenges. These studies have used a variety of technology, experimental paradigms and outcome measures to determine the putative contribution of a given cue, or set of cues, in solving this problem. A variety of results, some offering consensus and others conflicting, have been observed in these studies. The present review distils this large volume of literature into specific, take-away points for the early reader of this topic, acknowledging that the problem is non-trivial and far from being solved. The review also reveals that many of these studies may not have used appropriate/sensitive methodology or outcome measures to tease apart the relative contribution of a cue in solving the direction and magnitude challenge. The review concludes with the proposal that, since a multitude of cues may be used by the visual system for solving these problems, future studies could employ a Bayesian statistical cue-combination approach to address this problem. In the Pulfrich illusion, the depth of a moving object is misperceived due to induced retinal disparity and/or interocular velocity differences arising from differences in luminance, contrast, or spatial frequency between the two eyes. These effects have been shown to occur both for visual deficits and for optical corrections that introduce significant binocular differences between the retinal images. However, it remains unknown to what extent the illusion might arise given normal variation between the eyes, such as natural interocular variation in pupil diameter (anisocoria). To assess this, we examined the threshold interocular retinal illuminance difference required to experience illusory depth in two random-dot fields moving in opposite directions in 24 normally-sighted observers with dilated pupils. Interocular difference in retinal illuminance was induced by placing neutral density filters of different intensities before the left eye. A minority of subjects (n = 8) did not provide meaningful data on changes in the experience of illusory depth with interocular difference in retinal illuminance and four subjects showed biases >±10% from the 50% point of subjective equality in the psychometric function. For the remaining 12 participants, the retinal illuminance had to differ by approximately 40% for the depth between the planes to become visible at threshold levels. This difference was approximately constant over a range of absolute luminance levels from 10 to 80 cd/m 2 . Our results suggest that while motion-in-depth illusions due to interocular differences in retinal illuminance may be pronounced in certain ophthalmic diseases or following certain optical interventions, it is unlikely to be manifest as a result of normal interocular variations in retinal illuminance. Further, our results also point towards the existence of substantial individual differences in the experience of what is otherwise thought of as a readily appreciable motion-in-depth illusion., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: To determine the utility of root mean squared (RMS) deviations of steady-state accommodation as a noncycloplegic marker for spasm of near reflex (SNR) vis-à-vis regular refractive errors., Methods: Binocular steady-state responses of accommodation, pupil, and vergence of 20 patients with accommodative spasm subtype of SNR (SNR-A; 9-23 years) and 91 with regular refractive errors (29 emmetropes, 41 myopes, 21 hyperopes; 19-38 years) was recorded in the uncorrected refractive error state for 120 seconds using a dynamic (50 frames per second), infrared photorefractor. Mean and RMS deviation of raw data was calculated for three 20-second-long epochs and their diagnostic utility was determined using standard ROC curves., Results: RMS deviations of accommodation increased with mean refractive error in SNR-A (y = -0.23x + 0.38; r2 = 0.69; P < 0.001) and regular refractive error (y = -0.02x + 0.10; r2 = 0.14; P = 0.002) cohorts, albeit with steeper slope and higher y-intercept in the former rather than the latter cohort. RMS deviation of 0.19D reliably distinguished SNR-A from regular refractive errors with a sensitivity and specificity of 95.2% and 92.2%, respectively [mean (±1 SEM) area under ROC curve: 0.98 ± 0.01]. The sensitivity, specificity, and area under ROC curve for RMS deviations of pupil (66.7%, 80%, and 0.70 ± 0.09) and vergence (52.4%, 84.6%, and 0.68 ± 0.08) were smaller than accommodation., Conclusions: RMS deviations of steady-state accommodation is a robust noncycloplegic marker for differentiating SNR-A from regular refractive errors. Pupil and vergence fluctuations have limited utility in this regard., Translational Relevance: RMS deviations of accommodation may be easily obtained using commercial photorefractors, and the cut-off values reported herein may be implemented to identify SNR-A during refractive error screening.

Spot-the-difference, the popular childhood game and a prototypical change blindness task, involves identification of differences in local features of two otherwise identical scenes using an eye scanning and matching strategy. Through binocular fusion of the companion scenes, the game becomes a visual search task, wherein players can simply scan the cyclopean percept for local features that may distinctly stand-out due to binocular rivalry/lustre. Here, we had a total of 100 visually normal adult (18-28 years of age) volunteers play this game in the traditional non-fusion mode and after cross-fusion of the companion images using a hand-held mirror stereoscope. The results demonstrate that the fusion mode significantly speeds up gameplay and reduces errors, relative to the non-fusion mode, for a range of target sizes, contrasts, and chromaticity tested (all, p<0.001). Amongst the three types of local feature differences available in these images (polarity difference, presence/absence of a local feature difference and shape difference in a local feature difference), features containing polarity difference was identified as first in ~60-70% of instances in both modes of gameplay (p<0.01), with this proportion being larger in the fusion than in the non-fusion mode. The binocular fusion advantage is lost when the lustre cue is purposefully weakened through alterations in target luminance polarity. Purpose: The present study's objectives are 1) to describe a novel model of Diabetic Retinopathy Capacity Building (DRCB) for optometrists in the detection of diabetes-related retinal pathology in India and 2) to assess the outcomes of this model by comparing the ability of optometrists to detect these diseases using retinal photographs, vis-à-vis, a specialist ophthalmologist., Methods: The DRCB model for optometrists conducted between August 2016 and August 2018 included training, certification in the screening, and referral guidelines for Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) and hospital-and community-based service delivery. Training included a 7-month long fellowship in DR and mentored participation as cofacilitators in 1-day orientation workshops on DR screening guidelines across India. The sensitivity and specificity of study optometrists in screening for DR by fundus photography were compared to a retina specialist before certification., Results: A total of eight optometrists successfully completed their DR fellowship in the project duration of 24 months. The sensitivity and specificity of detection of any DR were 95 and 79%, any Diabetic macular edema (DME) was 80 and 86%. The sensitivity and specificity of detection of sight threatening DR were 88 and 90% and DME was 72% and 92% respectively. Seven workshops were cofacilitated by study optometrists training 870 optometrists in DR screening guidelines across India., Conclusion: The present DRCB model results advocate for an optometry coordinated DR screening in India. Purpose: Keratoconus results in image quality loss in one or both eyes due to increased corneal distortion. This study quantified the depth of monocular suppression in keratoconus due to this image quality loss using a binocular contrast rivalry paradigm., Methods: Contrast rivalry was induced in 50 keratoconic cases (11-31 years) and 12 age-matched controls by dichoptically viewing orthogonal Gabor patches of 5 cycles per degree (cpd) and 1.5 cpd spatial frequency for 120 seconds with their best-corrected spectacles and rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses. The dwell time on each eye's percept was determined at baseline (100% contrast bilaterally) and at varying contrast levels (80-2.5%) in the stronger eye of keratoconus or dominant eye of controls. The contrast reduction needed in the stronger eye to balance dwell times on both eyes was considered a measure of suppression depth., Results: At baseline with 5 cpd stimuli and spectacle correction, the rivalry switches were less frequent and biased toward the stronger eye of cases, all relative to controls (P < 0.001). The contrast balance point of cases (20.51% [10.7-61%]) was lower than the controls (99.80% [98.6-100%]; P < 0.001) and strongly associated with the overall and interocular difference in disease severity (r = 0.83, P < 0.001). The suppression depth reduced for 1.5 cpd (70.8% [21.7-94%]), relative to 5 cpd stimulus (P < 0.001) and with contact lenses (80.1% [49.5-91.7%]), relative to spectacles (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: The eye with lesser disease severity dominates binocular viewing in keratoconus. The suppression depth of the poorer eye depends on the extent of bilateral disease severity, optical correction modality, and the target spatial frequency.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy and repeatability of refractive errors obtained using three autorefractors based on different measurement principles, vis-à-vis, gold-standard retinoscopy., Methodology: Accuracy of noncycloplegic, sphero-cylindrical refractive error of 234 eyes was obtained using the rotary prism-based RM-8900 closed-field autorefractor, photorefraction based Spot vision screener, wavefront aberrometry based E-see, and streak retinoscopy by four different examiners, masked to the results of each other. Intersession repeatability of autorefractors was determined by repeat measurements in a subset of 40 subjects., Results: Retinoscopy values of M, J 0 , and J 45 power vectors for the cohort ranged from -10.2 to 8 D, -1.4 to 1.8 D, and -0.9 to 1.2 D, respectively. Across autorefractors, the interequipment bias of M and J 0 power vectors were statistically insignificant (< ±0.5 D; P > 0.05) but the corresponding limits of agreement were ±2.5 and ±1 D, respectively, without any trend across instruments or the patient's age ( P > 0.5). Repeatability of M and J 0 power vectors were ±0.75 D and ±0.40 D, respectively, across autorefractors. The range of J 45 power vector was too narrow for any meaningful analysis., Conclusions: Refractive errors measured using autorefractors operating on different principles show minimal bias and good short-term repeatability but relatively large agreement limits, vis-à-vis, retinoscopy. Purpose: Rod and cone photoreceptor-specific tests can be time-consuming. A new non-invasive test is described. The test is based on the measurement of flicker modulation thresholds with rod- and cone-enhanced visual stimuli, which requires only minimum adaptation time. Here, we investigated how the rod-and cone-mediated flicker thresholds vary with age., Methods: Monocular thresholds with rod and cone-enhanced stimuli were measured in 140 healthy adults, (age range: 18-75 years), foveally (0°) and at four parafoveal locations, at an eccentricity of 5° in each of the four quadrants using five, adaptive, interleaved staircases. Temporal frequencies, stimulus sizes, background luminance and spectral composition, were adjusted appropriately to achieve approximately 1 log unit separation in sensitivity between the rod- and cone-enhanced stimuli. Spectrally calibrated, 'neutral density' filters were used to enable adequate control of display luminance for rod enhanced stimuli., Results: The magnitude of central and parafoveal rod thresholds was significantly higher than the central and parafoveal cone thresholds, respectively (p < 0.001) in both the age groups. However, the rate of increase in central rod thresholds (y = 0.45x-12.79; linear regression equation) was not significantly steeper than the rate of increase in central (y = 0.29x-8.53) cone thresholds (p = 0.15). Centrally, cone thresholds showed a better correlation with rod central thresholds for the age > 45 years (Spearman correlation, ρ = 0.74, p < 0.001) compared to age ≤ 45 years (ρ = 0.41, p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Thresholds with rod- and cone-enhanced stimuli are largely invariant below 45 years of age and increase rapidly above this age. Purpose: To characterize binocular steady-state accommodation, pupil and convergence responses (near triad) in spasm of near reflex (SNR) before and after optical and pharmacological intervention. To identify the putative source of SNR in the neural control schema of accommodation-vergence interaction using controls-engineering modeling., Methods: Near-triad of 15 patients with SNR (9 to 23 years) was recorded using an infrared photorefractor at 2m viewing distance for 120s during clinical presentation, after optical fogging intended to relieve spasm, with cycloplegia, post-cycloplegia and long-term follow-up visits. Data were also collected without cycloplegia in 15 age-matched controls. Schor (1999) model was used to computationally simulate accommodation and vergence responses of controls and SNR., Results: Both eyes of SNR exhibited significant myopia and refraction fluctuations (<1.0Hz) during clinical presentation [median (25th to 75th IQR) refraction: -1.7D (-3.2 to -0.8D); root mean squared (RMS) deviation: 1.1D (0.5 to 1.5D)], relative to controls [0.8D (-0.03 to 1.4D); 0.2D (0.1 to 0.3D)] (p < 0.001). These decreased after optical fogging, largely eliminated with cycloplegia and partially re-appeared in the post-cycloplegia and follow-up visits. SNR responses could be modeled by increasing the gain and decay time of tonic accommodation, vis-à-vis, controls. Pupil and convergence responses in SNR were similar to controls at all visits (p > 0.1)., Conclusions: Exaggerated fluctuations of steady-state accommodation may be a signature feature of SNR, even while their pupil and convergence responses may remain unaffected. These fluctuations may arise from the tonic accommodation controller, the properties of which could be potentially altered after optical fogging to relieve the disorder.

Higher-order aberrations (HOA's) are exaggerated in eyes with keratoconus but little is known about their impact on the retinal image quality (IQ) of these eyes. This computational study determined changes in IQ [peak IQ, best focus and depth of focus (DOF)] of 12 subjects with manifest keratoconus in both eyes (KCE cohort), 9 subjects with very asymmetric ectasia (VAE cohort) with and without their Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses (RGP CL's) and 20 age-matched controls, using a HOA-based through-focus analysis performed on the logNS IQ metric over 5 mm pupil diameter following cycloplegia. All IQ parameters were significantly worse in the KCE cohort with their native HOA's, relative to controls and in the ectatic eye of the VAE cohort, relative to the fellow non-ectatic eye (p ≤ 0.008 for all). Reduction in HOA's of these eyes with RGP CL's resulted in a significant improvement in all IQ parameters but they all remained significantly poorer than controls (p ≤ 0.02 for all). The inter-subject variability of best focus and the DOF range were inversely related to peak IQ in these eyes (r = 0.85; p < 0.001). These results provide the optical basis for two clinical observations on keratoconus: (1) optical performance of keratoconic eyes are significantly better with RGP CL's than with spectacles or unaided conditions and (2) the endpoint of subjective refraction is elusive in keratoconic eyes, relative to healthy controls or to the non-ectatic eye in bilaterally asymmetric ectasia.

Stereoacuity losses are induced by increased magnitudes and interocular differences in high-order aberrations (HOAs). This study used keratoconus as a model to investigate the impact of HOAs on disparity processing and stereoacuity. HOAs and stereoacuity were quantified in subjects with keratoconus (n = 21) with HOAs uncorrected (wearing spectacles) or minimized (wearing rigid gas-permeable contact lenses) and in control subjects without keratoconus (n = 5) for 6-mm pupil diameters. Disparity signal quality was estimated using metrics derived from binocular cross-correlation functions of stereo pairs convolved with point-spread functions from these HOAs. Metrics computed for all subjects were compared with stereoacuities. The effects of contrast losses and phase shifts on disparity signal quality were studied independently by manipulating the amplitude and phase components of optical transfer functions. The magnitudes, orientations, interocular relationships in magnitude, and shape of the point-spread function affected the cross-correlation metrics that determine disparity signal quality. Stereoacuity covaries strongly with cross-correlation metrics and moderately with image-quality metrics. Both phase distortions and contrast losses due to HOAs significantly influence computations of binocular disparity. HOA-induced stereoacuity reductions are attributable to disparity blur and noise from image properties that reduce the height and kurtosis of the peak stimulus disparity match of the cross-correlation. Phase distortions and contrast losses due to HOAs are both partly responsible for the greater stereoacuity losses seen with spectacles compared to rigid gas-permeable contact lenses in keratoconus.

Background: Clarity of the transplanted tissue and restoration of visual acuity are the two primary metrics for evaluating the success of corneal transplantation. Participation of the transplanted eye in habitual binocular viewing is seldom evaluated post-operatively. In unilateral corneal disease, the transplanted eye may remain functionally inactive during binocular viewing due to its suboptimal visual acuity and poor image quality, vis-à-vis the healthy fellow eye., Methods and Findings: This study prospectively quantified the contribution of the transplanted eye towards habitual binocular viewing in 25 cases with unilateral transplants [40 yrs (IQR: 32-42 yrs) and 25 age-matched controls [30 yrs (25-37 yrs)]. Binocular functions including visual field extent, high-contrast logMAR acuity, suppression threshold and stereoacuity were assessed using standard psychophysical paradigms. Optical quality of all eyes was determined from wavefront aberrometry measurements. Binocular visual field expanded by a median 21% (IQR: 18-29%) compared to the monocular field of cases and controls (p = 0.63). Binocular logMAR acuity [0.0 (0.0-0.0)] almost always followed the fellow eye's acuity [0.00 (0.00 --0.02)] (r = 0.82), independent of the transplanted eye's acuity [0.34 (0.2-0.5)] (r = 0.04). Suppression threshold and stereoacuity were poorer in cases [30.1% (13.5-44.3%); 620.8 arc sec (370.3-988.2 arc sec)] than in controls [79% (63.5-100%); 16.3 arc sec (10.6-25.5 arc sec)] (p<0.001). Higher-order wavefront aberrations of the transplanted eye [0.34 μ (0.21-0.51 μ)] were higher than the fellow eye [0.07 μ (0.05-0.11 μ)] (p<0.001) and their reduction with RGP contact lenses [0.09 μ (0.08-0.12 μ)] significantly improved the suppression threshold [65% (50-72%)] and stereoacuity [56.6 arc sec (47.7-181.6 arc sec)] (p<0.001)., Conclusions: In unilateral corneal disease, the transplanted eye does participate in gross binocular viewing but offers limited support to fine levels of binocularity. Improvement in the transplanted eye's optics enhances its participation in binocular viewing. Current metrics of this treatment success can expand to include measures of binocularity to assess the functional benefit of the transplantation process in unilateral corneal disease.

Laser refractive surgery for myopia increases the eye's higher-order wavefront aberrations (HOA's). However, little is known about the impact of such optical degradation on post-operative image quality (IQ) of these eyes. This study determined the relation between HOA's and IQ parameters (peak IQ, dioptric focus that maximized IQ and depth of focus) derived from psychophysical (logMAR acuity) and computational (logVSOTF) through-focus curves in 45 subjects (18 to 31 yrs) before and 1-month after refractive surgery and in 40 age-matched emmetropic controls. Computationally derived peak IQ and its best focus were negatively correlated with the RMS deviation of all HOA's (HORMS) (r≥-0.5; p<0.001 for all). Computational depth of focus was positively correlated with HORMS (r≥0.55; p<0.001 for all) and negatively correlated with peak IQ (r≥-0.8; p<0.001 for all). All IQ parameters related to logMAR acuity were poorly correlated with HORMS (r≤|0.16|; p>0.16 for all). Increase in HOA's after refractive surgery is therefore associated with a decline in peak IQ and a persistence of this sub-standard IQ over a larger dioptric range, vis-à-vis, before surgery and in age-matched controls. This optical deterioration however does not appear to significantly alter psychophysical IQ, suggesting minimal impact of refractive surgery on the subject's ability to resolve spatial details and their tolerance to blur.

Eccentric infrared photorefraction is an attractive tool for measuring refractive errors of young children and uncooperative subjects, for it allows quick and non-invasive acquisition of data from both eyes simultaneously over a reasonably large dioptric range. Accuracy of refraction in this technique depends on calibration of luminance slope formed across the pupil into diopters (defocus calibration factor). Commercial photorefractors, like the PowerRef 3™ used in this study, employ an universal defocus calibration factor from one population (Caucasian) to convert raw data of all populations. This study reports significantly larger defocus calibration factors of PowerRef 3™ in 132 East Asian, African and Indian eyes, relative to the machine's default calibration (p < 0.001). The calibration slope of 50 Indian eyes was over-estimated by 64 ± 11% (mean ± 95%CI), vis-à-vis, retinoscopy (p < 0.001). The error reduced to ~6-7% upon rescaling the data using a calibration factor specific for Indian eyes or to that individual (p > 0.9, relative to no over-estimation). Our results therefore strongly suggest the use of an ethnicity- or individual-specific defocus calibration factor for accurate estimation of refraction using photorefraction. Inaccurate refraction estimates due to calibration errors will otherwise severely undermine the advantages of this technique.

Hybrid photocatalysts with suitable band structures are expected to show enhanced photocatalytic activity as compared to their constituent single phase compounds due to their improved physico-chemical properties. Here, we report an enhanced photocatalytic activity of a new composite photocatalyst comprising of ZrO2, TiO2, and CdS. This hybrid catalyst exhibits increased photocatalytic activity for hydrogen generation from water as compared to their constituent compounds. The photocatalytic activity decreases in the order: ZrO2-TiO2-CdS>TiO2-CdS>ZrO2-CdS>CdS>ZrO2-TiO2≈TiO2>ZrO2. An apparent quantum efficiency of 11.5% is obtained for ZrO2-TiO2-CdS with Pd as co-catalyst. Absorption edge of the composite is slightly blue shifted compared with that of pure CdS. Photoluminescence lifetime studies indicate an increased lifetime for the charge carriers in the composite sample as compared to that of pure CdS. Transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the particle size of the composite is much less than that of single phase CdS. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite is attributed to the decreased particle size of CdS and increased lifetime of the charge carriers resulting from the efficient interfacial transfer of photogenerated electrons at the CdS/TiO2 and CdS/ZrO2 interface., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Purpose: Phenylephrine hydrochloride (PHCl), a commonly used mydriatic agent, causes a small but significant deterioration of accommodation. The relative roles of pharmacology and optics in this deterioration, however, remain unascertained. The study determined the combined impact of PHCl concentration (pharmacology) and pupil size (optics) on the static and dynamic characteristics of accommodation., Materials and Methods: A total of 16 emmetropic Indian adults viewed a high-contrast visual target that switched between 67 and 33 cm viewing distance (1.5D stimulus) with their right eye (left eye occluded using infrared transmitting filter) through natural pupils and through 8, 6, 4, and 1 mm diameter artificial pupils. This protocol was repeated once without PHCl and once each with 2.5%, 5%, and 10% PHCl. Consensual accommodation of the left eye was recorded using infrared photorefraction (60 Hz)., Results: Relative to no PHCl, the horizontal pupil diameter of left eye was significantly larger (P < 0.001) and the response magnitude and peak velocity of accommodation and disaccommodation were modestly but significantly smaller (P < 0.02 for all) for all concentrations of PHCl tested. There was no significant difference in these parameters across the three drug concentrations (P > 0.4 for all). The response magnitude and peak velocity also decreased significantly with pupil diameter, at similar rates for the no PHCl and the three PHCl conditions (P < 0.001 for all)., Conclusion: The reduction in accommodative performance with all drug concentrations and with pupil diameter suggests independent roles of pharmacology and optics in determining accommodative performance with PHCl. The reduction in accommodative performance is, however, modest and may be clinically irrelevant in Indian eyes.

Purpose: Clear and single binocular vision, a prerequisite for normal human visual development, is achieved through accommodation and vergence. Anisometropia is associated with abnormal visual development, but its impact on accommodation and vergence, and therefore on the individual's visual experience, is not known. This study determined the impact of transiently induced anisometropia on accommodative and vergence performance of the typically developing human visual system., Methods: One hundred eighteen subjects (age range, 2.9 months to 41.1 years) watched a cartoon movie that moved between 80 and 33 cm under six different viewing conditions: binocular and monocular, and with ±2 diopters (D) and ±4 D of lens-induced anisometropia. Twenty-one subjects (age range, 3.1 months to 12.1 years) also watched the movie with 11% induced aniseikonia. Accommodation and vergence were recorded in both eyes using a videoretinoscope (25 Hz)., Results: The main effect of viewing condition was statistically significant for both accommodation and vergence (both P < 0.001), with monocular accommodative and vergence gains statistically significantly smaller than the binocular and four induced anisometropia conditions (P < 0.001 for both accommodation and vergence). The main effect of age approached significance for accommodation (P = 0.06) and was not significant for vergence (P = 0.32). Accommodative and vergence gains with induced aniseikonia were not statistically significantly different from the binocular condition (both P > 0.5)., Conclusions: Accommodative and vergence gains of the typically developing visual system deteriorated marginally (accommodation more than vergence) with transiently induced anisometropia (up to ±4 D) and did not deteriorate significantly with induced aniseikonia of 11%. Some binocular cues remained with ±4 D of induced anisometropia and 11% induced aniseikonia, as indicated by the accommodative and vergence gains being higher than in monocular viewing.

Pupil responses of adults to near visual demands are well characterized but those of typically developing infants and children are not. This study determined the following pupil characteristics of infants, children and adults using a PowerRefractor (25 Hz): i) binocular and monocular responses to a cartoon movie that ramped between 80 and 33 cm (20 infants, 20 2-4-yr-olds and 20 adults participated) ii) binocular and monocular response threshold for 0.1 Hz sinusoidal stimuli of 0.25 D, 0.5 D or 0.75 D amplitude (33 infants and 8 adults participated) iii) steady-state stability of pupil responses at 80 cms (8 infants and 8 adults participated). The change in pupil diameter with viewing distance (Δpd) was significantly smaller in infants and 2-4-yr-olds than in adults (p < 0.001) and significantly smaller under monocular than binocular conditions (p<0.001). The 0.75 D sinusoidal stimulus elicited a significant binocular pupillary response in infants and a significant binocular and monocular pupillary response in adults. Steady-state pupillary fluctuations were similar in infants and adults (p = 0.25). The results suggest that the contribution of pupil size to changes in retinal image quality when tracking slow moving objects may be smaller during development than in adulthood. Some newer mechanistic aspects investigated by in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) in conjunction with catalytic activity under similar conditions over crystalline lanthanum titanates as a function of Fe substitution at the B-site for the CO + N(2)O reaction are reported for the first time in the present communication. La(2)Ti(2(1-x))Fe(2x)O(7-delta) (0.0 < or = x < or = 1.0) was synthesized by gel combustion where Fe(3+) substitution effectively enhanced the conversion rates for N(2)O reduction as compared to the pristine La(2)Ti(2)O(7) (LTOGC). Among all samples, maximum conversion over La(2)Ti(0.8)Fe(1.2)O(7-delta) [LF(0.6)GC] catalyst was observed. In situ FTIR results reveal that substitution-induced anionic vacancies/defects provide additional sites on the surface of LF(0.6)GC for CO chemisorptions, whereas a perfect stoichiometric lattice like LTOGC is devoid of such sites. Surface-adsorbed CO reacts with surface lattice oxygen in the case of nonstoichiometric LF(0.6)GC to produce carbonates (M-CO(3)(2-)) at a much lower temperature. The reaction proceeds via carbonate formation, leaving the catalytic surface oxygen deficient in LF(0.6)GC, and therefore facilitates the reduction of preadsorbed, N(2)O [N(2)O(g) + * --> N(2) + *-O) by easily adsorbing the oxygen species (*-O) generated in N(2)O reduction, which is subsequently driven away by adsorbed/gas phase CO, whereas in the case of LTOGC, progress of the reaction was sluggish in the absence of transient carbonate species. Dissociative chemisorptions of N(2)O are not facilitated on stoichiometric oxygen excess titanate, as there is no vacancy in the surface to accommodate another oxygen atom. The redox mechanism via CO(3)(2-) species is proposed for CO + N(2)O reaction over La(2)Ti(2(1-x))Fe(2x)O(7-delta), as against the associative mechanism observed in the unsubstituted sample, La(2)Ti(2)O(7), as suggested by in situ FTIR in conjunction with catalytic activity results.

Accommodative and vergence responses of the typically developing visual system are generated using a combination of cues, including retinal blur and disparity. The developmental importance of blur and disparity cues in generating these motor responses was assessed by placing the two cues in conflict with each other. Cue-conflicts were induced by placing either -2 D lenses or 2 MA base-out prisms before both eyes of 140 subjects (2.0 months to 40.8 years) while they watched a cartoon movie binocularly at 80 cm. The frequency and amplitude of accommodation to lenses and vergence to prisms increased with age (both p < 0.001), with the vergence response (mean +/- 1 SEM = 1.38 +/- 0.05 MA) being slightly larger than the accommodative response (1.18 +/- 0.04 D) at all ages (p = 0.007). The amplitude of these responses decreased with an increase in conflict stimuli (1 to 3 D or MA) (both p < 0.01). The coupled vergence response to -2 D lenses (0.31 +/- 0.06 MA) and coupled accommodative response to 2 MA base-out prisms (0.21 +/- 0.02 D) were significantly smaller than (both p < 0.001) and poorly correlated with the open-loop vergence (r = 0.12; p = 0.44) and open-loop accommodation (r = -0.08; p = 0.69), respectively. The typically developing visual system compensates for transiently induced conflicts between blur and disparity stimuli, without exhibiting a strong preference for either cue. The accuracy of this compensation decreases with an increase in amplitude of cue-conflict.

Purpose: Indirect observations suggest that the neural control of accommodation may undergo adaptive recalibration in response to age-related biomechanical changes in the accommodative system. However, there has been no direct demonstration of such an adaptive capability. This investigation was conducted to demonstrate short-term adaptation of accommodative step response dynamics to optically induced changes in neuromuscular demands., Methods: Repetitive changes in accommodative effort were induced in 15 subjects (18-34 years) with a double-step adaptation paradigm wherein an initial 2-D step change in blur was followed 350 ms later by either a 2-D step increase in blur (increasing-step paradigm) or a 1.75-D step decrease in blur (decreasing-step paradigm). Peak velocity, peak acceleration, and latency of 2-D single-step test responses were assessed before and after 1.5 hours of training with these paradigms., Results: Peak velocity and peak acceleration of 2-D step responses increased after adaptation to the increasing-step paradigm (9/12 subjects), and they decreased after adaptation to the decreasing-step paradigm (4/9 subjects). Adaptive changes in peak velocity and peak acceleration generalized to responses that were smaller (1 D) and larger (3 D) than the 2-D adaptation stimulus. The magnitude of adaptation correlated poorly with the subject's age, but it was significantly negatively correlated with the preadaptation dynamics. Response latency decreased after adaptation, irrespective of the direction of adaptation., Conclusions: Short-term adaptive changes in accommodative step response dynamics could be induced, at least in some of our subjects between 18 and 34 years, with a directional bias toward increasing rather than decreasing the dynamics.

Vanadium-doped titania is found to be a better photocatalyst for gas phase photo-oxidation of ethylene than nano titania. In situ FTIR studies were undertaken to elucidate the mechanistic pathway for ethylene oxidation on these two catalyst surfaces. Vanadium doping leads to formation of more chemisorbed hydroxyl species, which makes it a better photocatalyst. The labile hydroxyls which were responsible for the reduction of V(5+) to V(4+) during the process of calcination were also ascertained. The ethylene decomposition occurs via formation of ethoxy groups, transformed to acetaldehyde or enolates, subsequently to acetates/formates, and then to CO(2). The enolates were more stabilized on the TiO(2) surface, leading to formation of formates along with the acetates. On vanadium-doped TiO(2), acetaldehyde was more stabilized than its enol tautomer, leading to the formation of labile acetic acid and acetates. The formation of the labile acetic acid, adsorbed acetates, and the adsorbed acetate -M salts led to easier oxidation of them to provide higher yield of CO(2). The higher positive charge density over Ti in Ti(0.95)V(0.05)O(2) with respect to nano TiO(2) makes the acetate (stronger nucleophile) a more stable intermediate on it.

Accommodation and vergence help maintain single and focused visual experience while an object moves in depth. The relative importance of retinal blur and disparity, the primary sensory cues to accommodation and vergence, is largely unknown during development; a period when growth of the eye and head necessitate continual recalibration of egocentric space. Here we measured the developmental importance of retinal disparity in 192 typically developing subjects (1.9 months to 46 years). Subjects viewed high-contrast cartoon targets with naturalistic spatial frequency spectra while their accommodation and vergence responses were measured from both eyes using a PowerRefractor. Accommodative gain was reduced during monocular viewing relative to full binocular viewing, even though the fixating eye generated comparable tracking eye movements in the two conditions. This result was consistent across three forms of monocular occlusion. The accommodative gain was lowest in infants and only reached adult levels by 7 to 10 years of age. As expected, the gain of vergence was also reduced in monocular conditions. When 4- to 6-year-old children read 20/40-sized letters, their monocular accommodative gain reached adult-like levels. In summary, binocular viewing appears necessary under naturalistic viewing conditions to generate full accommodation and vergence responses in typically developing humans.

Retinal image quality in infants is largely determined by the accuracy and the stability of their accommodative responses. Although the accuracy of infants' accommodation has been investigated previously, little is known about the stability of their responses. We performed two experiments that characterized the stability of infants' steady state accommodation. Analyses were performed in the time domain (root mean square [RMS] deviation) and in the frequency domain (spectral analysis). In Experiment 1, accommodation responses were recorded for a period of 3 s from the left eye of four groups of infants (8-10, 11-13, 14-19, and 20-30 weeks of age) and eight prepresbyopic adults while they focused on a small toy placed at a dioptric viewing distance of 1.0 D (at 1 m). In Experiment 2, accommodation responses were recorded for a period of 14 s from the left eye of a group of 8- to 12-week-old infants and six prepresbyopic adults while they focused on a cartoon image placed at three different dioptric viewing distances (1.25, 2.0, and 3.0 D). The data, collected using a photorefractor sampling at 25 Hz, showed two important characteristics. First, the RMS deviations and the power were quantitatively similar across different infant age groups, and they were significantly larger in infants than in adults. Second, the overall and relative power also increased with the dioptric viewing distance both in infants and adults. At all three dioptric viewing distances, the measures of power were larger in infants than in adults. These data demonstrate that infants' accommodative responses contain instabilities that are qualitatively very similar to those observed in adults. However, the larger RMS deviations suggest that infants are likely to experience larger fluctuations in retinal image quality than adults.

Purpose: The maximum binocular vertical disparity that can be fused with disparity vergence (vertical-fusion amplitude or VFA), varies with convergence angle. VFA is larger for convergence responses to near than to far viewing distances; however, the clinical norms for changes in VFA with convergence have not been established. VFA at several convergence angles was measured to obtain a quantitative description of the changes in VFA with convergence., Methods: Fifty-six adults took part in the study. Horizontal and vertical disparity stimuli were presented on a computer monitor by using the red-green anaglyphic technique. Stimulus to convergence was altered either by changing horizontal disparity on the computer monitor (experiment I: nine horizontal disparities: 1.2-22.5 PD [Delta]) or by changing the binocular viewing distance (experiment II: five viewing distances: 25-300 cm). Convergence was held constant during an experimental session, while vertical disparity was incremented in steps of 0.05 Delta after a subjective report of fusion, until the subject reported diplopia. The maximum vertical disparity that could be fused was defined as the VFA., Results: VFA increased linearly over the range of convergence stimuli (y = 0.10x + 1.62) and intersubject variability of VFA increased marginally with the amount of convergence. Linear regression equations with similar slopes and y-intercepts were observed in experiments I and II., Conclusions: The results of the experiments provide a quantitative description of a linear relationship between VFA and convergence. The linear regression equation could be used in a clinical setting to establish norms and to screen for vertical vergence abnormalities.

Peak velocity and peak acceleration of disaccommodation step responses remain invariant of response magnitude for a constant starting position and they increase linearly with proximity of starting position. This suggests that disaccommodation response is initiated towards an initial (default) destination and is switched mid-flight to attain the desired final destination. The dioptric location of initial destination was estimated from the x-intercept of regression of peak velocity on response starting position. The x-intercept correlated well with subject's cycloplegic refractive state and poorly with their dark focus of accommodation. Altering the dark focus by inducing fatigue in the accommodative system did not alter the x-intercept. These observations suggest that cycloplegic refractive state is a good behavioral correlate of initial destination of disaccommodation step responses.

Velocity and acceleration characteristics provide valuable information about dynamic control of accommodation. We investigated velocity and acceleration of disaccommodation (near-far focusing) from three starting positions. Peak velocity and peak acceleration of disaccommodation increased with the proximity of starting position however for a given starting position they were invariant of response magnitude. These results suggest that all disaccommodation responses are initiated towards a constant primary destination and are switched mid-flight to attain the desired final position. Large discrepancies between the primary destination and desired final position appear to produce overshoots and oscillations of small responses from proximal starting positions.

Dynamic properties and control strategies of step responses by accommodation and disaccommodation differ from one another. Peak velocity of accommodation increases with response magnitude, while peak velocity and peak acceleration of disaccommodation increase with starting position. These dynamic properties can be modeled as control strategies that use independent acceleration-pulse and velocity-step components that are integrated respectively into phasic-velocity signals that control movement and tonic-position signals that control magnitude. Accommodation is initiated toward its final destination by an acceleration-pulse whose width increases with response magnitude to increase peak velocity. Disaccommodation is initiated toward a default destination (the far point) by an acceleration-pulse whose height increases with dioptric distance of the starting position to increase peak velocity and peak acceleration. Both responses are completed and maintained by tonic-position signals whose amplitudes are proportional to the final destination. Mismatched amplitudes of phasic-velocity and tonic-position signals in disaccommodation produce unstable step responses.

We have developed a dynamic model of accommodation that combines independent phasic-velocity and tonic-position neural signals to control position, velocity and acceleration properties of accommodative step responses. Phasic and tonic signals were obtained from neural integration of a fixed-height acceleration-pulse and variable-height velocity-step respectively to control independent acceleration and velocity properties of the step response. Duration and amplitude of the acceleration-pulse are increased with age to compensate for age-related increases of visco-elastic properties of the lens to maintain youthful velocity. The model illustrates a neural control strategy that is similar to the classical neural control model of step changes by the saccadic and vergence systems.

Position and velocity of accommodation are known to increase with stimulus magnitude, however, little is known about acceleration properties. We investigated three acceleration properties: peak acceleration, time-to-peak acceleration and total duration of acceleration to step changes in defocus. Peak velocity and total duration of acceleration increased with response magnitude. Peak acceleration and time-to-peak acceleration remained independent of response magnitude. Independent first-order and second-order dynamic components of accommodation demonstrate that neural control of accommodation has an initial open-loop component that is independent of response magnitude and a closed-loop component that increases with response magnitude.
