Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major global health challenge with rising incidence. Despite the previous approval of several novel therapeutic approaches, HCC remains the second common cause of cancer-related death worldwide. The vast majority of HCCs arises in the context of chronic fibrotic liver diseases caused by viral or metabolic etiologies. In patients with advanced liver disease the risk of HCC persists even after viral cure or control of infection. Moreover, given the change in the lifestyle and increase of obesity and metabolic disorders, HCC incidence is predicted to drastically augment in the next decade. Early detection, improvement of the screening method in patient at-risk and development of chemopreventive strategies are therefore urgently needed to reduce HCC risk. This review summarizes the major challenges in the identification of patient at risk for HCC and the emergent strategies for HCC prevention to improve patients’ outcome.

Abstract

Coherent optical phonons in the degenerate inter-layer shear mode of graphite launched by femtosecond laser pulses were investigated using ultrafast electron diffraction. The collective atomic motion is shown to be polarized in a direction related to the linear polarization of the incoming laser pulse. Using a driven-oscillator model, the lifetime of the oscillator's driving force is determined to 37(30) fs. This is much shorter than the lifetime of excited carriers in graphite but similar to the time scale of the loss of the hot carrier's k-space anisotropy.

Abstract

Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) is a fascinating phenomenon both from a fundamental science aspect but also due to its emerging role as a highly sensitive analytic tool for chiral recognition in the gas phase. PECD has been studied with single-photon as well as multi-photon ionization. The latter has been investigated in the short pulse limit with femtosecond laser pulses, where ionization can be thought of as an instantaneous process. In this contribution, we demonstrate that multiphoton PECD still can be observed when using an ultra-violet nanosecond pulse to ionize chiral showcase fenchone molecules. Compared to femtosecond ionization, the magnitude of PECD is similar, but the lifetime of intermediate molecular states imprints itself in the photoelectron spectra. Being able to use an industrial nanosecond laser to investigate PECD furthermore reduces the technical requirements to apply PECD in analytical chemistry.

Abstract

We show that the combination of two achiral components - atomic or molecular target plus a circularly polarized photon - can yield chirally structured photoelectron angular distributions. For photoionization of CO, the angular distribution of carbon K-shell photoelectrons is chiral when the molecular axis is neither perpendicular nor (anti-)parallel to the light propagation axis. In photo-double-ionization of He, the distribution of one electron is chiral, if the other electron is oriented like the molecular axis in the former case and if the electrons are distinguishable by their energy. In both scenarios, the circularly polarized photon defines a plane with a sense of rotation and an additional axis is defined by the CO molecule or one electron. This is sufficient to establish an unambiguous coordinate frame of well-defined handedness. To produce a chirally structured electron angular distribution, such a coordinate frame is necessary, but not sufficient. We show that additional electron-electron interaction or scattering processes are needed to create the chiral angular distribution.

Abstract

Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) is a highly sensitive enantiospecific spectroscopy for studying chiral molecules in the gas phase using either single-photon ionization or multiphoton ionization. In the short pulse limit investigated with femtosecond lasers, resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) is rather instantaneous and typically occurs simultaneously via more than one vibrational or electronic intermediate state due to limited frequency resolution. In contrast, vibrational resolution in the REMPI spectrum can be achieved using nanosecond lasers. In this work, we follow the high-resolution approach using a tunable narrow-band nanosecond laser to measure REMPI-PECD through distinct vibrational levels in the intermediate 3s and 3p Rydberg states of fenchone. We observe the PECD to be essentially independent of the vibrational level. This behaviour of the chiral sensitivity may pave the way for enantiomer specific molecular identification in multi-component mixtures: one can specifically excite a sharp, vibrationally resolved transition of a distinct molecule to distinguish different chiral species in mixtures.

Abstract

Using a model methane-like chiral system, we theoretically demonstrate a possibility to access photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) by a single experiment with two overlapping laser pulses of carrier frequencies $\omega$ and $2\omega$, which are linearly polarized in two mutually-orthogonal directions. Depending on the relative phase, the resulting electric field can be tailored to have two different rotational directions in the upper and lower hemispheres along the polarization of the $\omega$-pulse. We predict a strong forward/backward asymmetry in the emission of photoelectrons from randomly oriented samples, which has an opposite sign in the upper and lower hemispheres. The predicted PECD effect is phase- and enantiomer-sensitive, providing new insight in this fascinating fundamental phenomenon. The effect can be optimized by varying relative intensities of the pulses.

Abstract

The intermediate state dependence of photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) in resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization of fenchone in the gas phase is experimentally studied. By scanning the excitation wavelength from 359 to 431 nm we simultaneously excite up to three electronically distinct resonances. In the PECD experiment performed with a broadband femtosecond laser their respective contributions to the photoelectron spectrum can be resolved. High-resolution spectroscopy allows us to identify two of the resonances as belonging to the B- and C-bands, which involve excitation to states with 3s and 3p Rydberg character, respectively. We observe a sign change in the PECD signal depending on which electronic state is used as an intermediate. Additionally, scanning the laser wavelength reveals a decrease of PECD magnitude with increasing photoelectron energy for the 3s state.

Abstract

Coherent control over photoelectron wavepackets, via the use of polarization-shaped laser pulses, can be understood as a time and polarization-multiplexed process. In this work, we investigate this multiplexing via computation of the observable photoelectron angular interferograms resulting from multi-photon atomic ionization with polarization-shaped laser pulses. We consider the polarization sensitivity of both the instantaneous and cumulative continuum wavefunction; the nature of the coherent control over the resultant photoelectron interferogram is thus explored in detail. Based on this understanding, the use of coherent control with polarization-shaped pulses as a methodology for a highly multiplexed coherent quantum metrology is also investigated, and defined in terms of the information content of the observable., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

23. Complete photoionization experiments via ultra-fast coherent control with polarization-multiplexing

Abstract

Photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) obtained from ionization of potassium atoms using moderately intense femtosecond IR fields ($\sim$10$^{12}$Wcm$^{-2}$) of various polarization states are shown to provide a route to "complete" photoionization experiments. Ionization occurs by a net 3-photon absorption process, driven via the $4s\rightarrow4p$ resonance at the 1-photon level. A theoretical treatment incorporating the intra-pulse electronic dynamics allows for a full set of ionization matrix elements to be extracted from 2D imaging data. 3D PADs generated from the extracted matrix elements are also compared to experimental, tomographically reconstructed, 3D photoelectron distributions, providing a sensitive test of their validity. Finally, application of the determined matrix elements to ionization via more complex, polarization-shaped, pulses is demonstrated, illustrating the utility of this methodology towards detailed understanding of complex ionization control schemes and suggesting the utility of such "multiplexed" intra-pulse processes as powerful tools for measurement.

Abstract

BACKGROUND. Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is characterized by a severe impairment of HCV-specific [CD4.sup.+] T cell help that is driven by chronic antigen stimulation. We aimed to study the fate of HCV-specific [CD4.sup.+] T cells after virus elimination. METHODS. HCV-specific [CD4.sup.+] T cell responses were longitudinally analyzed using MHC class II tetramer technology, multicolor flow cytometry, and RNA sequencing in a cohort of patients chronically infected with HCV undergoing therapy with directacting antivirals. In addition, HCV-specific neutralizing antibodies and CXCL13 levels were analyzed. RESULTS. We observed that the frequency of HCV-specific [CD4.sup.+] T cells increased within 2 weeks after initiating directacting antiviral therapy. Multicolor flow cytometry revealed a downregulation of exhaustion and activation markers and an upregulation of memory-associated markers. Although cells with a Th1 phenotype were the predominant subset at baseline, cells with phenotypic and transcriptional characteristics of follicular T helper cells increasingly shaped the circulating HCV-specific [CD4.sup.+] T cell repertoire, suggesting antigen-independent survival of this subset. These changes were accompanied by a decline of HCV-specific neutralizing antibodies and the germinal center activity. CONCLUSION. We identified a population of HCV-specific [CD4.sup.+] T cells with a follicular T helper cell signature that is maintained after therapy-induced elimination of persistent infection and may constitute an important target population for vaccination efforts to prevent reinfection and immunotherapeutic approaches for persistent viral infections. Abstract

We conducted two bi-national experiments regarding emotional and behavioral responses to a terrorist plot against commercial flights, examining both feelings and projected action. The studies employed hypothetical scenarios in which terrorists attacked airplanes with shoulder-fired missiles as they were landing or taking off from an international airport. The scenarios were built around two factorially crossed manipulated variables, each with three levels: (1) government announcements or actions (2) social norm, expressed as variation in airline ticket sales. Each respondent read a questionnaire containing only one of the nine scenarios. Experiment 1 was conducted in Spain and California (n = 360, 50% female), Experiment 2 in Israel and California (n = 504, 50% female). In both studies, fear and flight plans were not differentially affected by governmental response or social norm. Women expressed more fear than men. Experiment 1 examined the purpose of the trip. Most respondents would not change a planned flight to attend a close friend’s wedding or important job interview, but a substantial number would postpone a vacation or drive to a different location. Experiment 2 featured escalating attacks. These yielded increased fear and more canceled trips. 50. Una espiral de radicalización: terrorismo y opinión pública durante la campaña de ETA (1981-2010)

Abstract

En este artículo se estudian las interrelaciones entre el desarrollo de una campaña terrorista y la evolución de los estados de la opinión pública dentro de la comunidad de referencia que sirve de soporte a los actores armados. Para ello, nos basamos en la teoría de la opinión pública de Noelle-Neumann, según la cual ésta se configura dinámicamente como una «espiral de silencio». Tomando en consideración el caso de ETA en el País Vasco, analizamos empíricamente la relación mutua entre las muertes ocasionadas en los atentados de esa organización terrorista y la evolución de la adhesión política a ETA dentro de la izquierda abertzale. Los resultados de la estimación de un modelo de regresión señalan que, efectivamente, las interacciones entre esas dos variables avalan la tesis de que, en el País Vasco, se configuró una «espiral de radicalización» que sirvió de soporte a la espiral de silencio que se extendió sobre una parte importante de la sociedad vasca, que prefirió «mirar hacia otra parte» y justificar su pusilanimidad atribuyendo a las víctimas que «algo habrían hecho» para ser abatidas por ETA., This article studies interrelations between the development of a terrorist campaign and the evolution of the states of public opinion within the reference community that supports them. For this purpose, use the theory of public opinion of Noelle-Neumann, according to which it is dynamically configured as a "spiral of silence." Taking into consideration the case of the Basque terrorist group Euskadi ta Askatasuna (ETA) empirically analyse the mutual relationship between the deaths caused in the attacks of that terrorist organization and the evolution of political adhesion to ETA within the abertzale (patriotic) left. The results of the estimation of a regression model indicate that, over the period studied, there was indeed an interaction between these two variables that support the thesis of a "spiral of radicalization" in the Basque Country. This would have induced a spiral of silence that extended to an important part of Basque society, which preferred to "look elsewhere" justifying their pusillanimity by attributing that the victims "had surely done something wrong", deserving being executed by ETA
