We introduce the Planck SZiFi catalogues, a new set of 10 catalogues of galaxy clusters detected through their thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) signature. The catalogues are produced by applying the SZiFi cluster finder to the Planck PR3 temperature data down to a signal-to-noise threshold of 5. They span three frequency channel combinations (100-857 GHz, 100-545 GHz, and 100-353 GHz) and 7 of them are constructed by spectrally deprojecting the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB). This approach allows us, for the first time in the context of cluster finding, to carefully assess the impact of the cluster-correlated CIB on the recovered cluster tSZ observables, which we find to be negligible. In addition, we quantify the impact of the relativistic corrections to the tSZ signal, finding them to be at the 5-10% level for the cluster tSZ amplitude but negligible for the signal-to-noise. We compile our catalogues into a single Planck SZiFi master catalogue containing a total of 1499 detections. We cross-match the master catalogue with several external tSZ and X-ray cluster catalogues, setting a lower bound on the purity of our baseline catalogue of 95% and 99% at a minimum signal-to-noise of 5 and 6, respectively. We validate our cluster detection pipeline by applying it to synthetic observations, recovering cluster number counts for which we are able to produce a theoretical prediction that accurately describes them. This validation exercise indicates that our catalogues are well-suited for cosmological inference. We have adapted the Planck cluster likelihood in such a way that it can be applied to the sample of clusters detected by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). Applying it to the 2016 sample from Planck and the 2018 sample from ACT we find, by fixing the cosmology using CMB observations and the cluster model adopted by Planck, that the mass bias required by the two are $1-b_{\rm Planck}=0.61\pm 0.03$ and $1-b_{\rm ACT}=0.75\pm 0.06$. These are broadly in agreement but hint that the model could be adapted to reach a better agreement. By normalizing the cluster model using weak lensing observations, we find evidence for either evolution in the cluster model, quantified by the cluster modeling parameter describing redshift dependence $\beta=0.86 \pm 0.07$ using an updated CCCP-based normalization, or evolution in the cosmological model quantified by the dark energy equation of state parameter $w=-0.82 \pm 0.07$., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures

We discuss monopoles formed due to the spontaneous breakdown of a global $SO(3)_{\rm HF}$ symmetry within the global two-Higgs doublet model. We explain that the Higgs sector dynamics can be described in terms of two vectors one of which is null, $R^A=(R^0,R^a,R^4,R^5)$ for $a=1,2,3$, with 5 independent components describing the Higgs family symmetry and another, $n^a$, with 3 independent components related to the ``would-be'' Goldstone bosons. When formed from random initial conditions we find that monopoles are formed with a charged vacuum in the centre which couples the two fields together. We find a spherical symmetric solution which is an approximately uniform, unit winding of the sphere in both the $R^a$ and $n^a$ vectors. These global monopoles are closely related to the Nambu monopole. The additional complexity and structure contained in these monopoles does not appear to prevent the scaling of their density., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Model-independent tests of gravity with cosmology are important when testing extensions to the standard cosmological model. To maximise the impact of these tests one requires predictions for the matter power spectrum on non-linear scales. In this work we validate the \texttt{ReACT} approach to the non-linear matter power spectrum against a suite of phenomenological modified gravity N-body simulations with a time-varying gravitational constant, covering a wider range of parameter space than previously examined. This vanilla application of \texttt{ReACT} has limited range and precision due to the different concentration-mass relation $c(M)$ that occurs when gravity is modified. We extend this approach with a fitting function for a modified concentration-mass relation, allowing for accurate (1$\%$) computation of the matter power spectrum up $k=2\,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ across a substantial range of parameter space. Galaxy clusters detected through the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect are a powerful cosmological probe from which constraints on cosmological parameters such as $\Omega_{\mathrm{m}}$ and $\sigma_8$ can be derived. The measured cluster tSZ signal can be, however, contaminated by Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) emission, as the CIB is spatially correlated with the cluster tSZ field. We quantify the extent of this contamination by applying the iterative multi-frequency matched filter (iMMF) cluster-finding method to mock Planck-like data from the Websky simulation. We find a significant bias in the retrieved cluster tSZ observables (signal-to-noise and Compton-$y$ amplitude), at the level of about $0.5\, \sigma$ per cluster. This CIB-induced bias translates into about $20$% fewer detections than expected if all the Planck HFI channels are used in the analysis, which can potentially bias derived cosmological constraints. We introduce a spectrally constrained iMMF, or sciMMF, which proves to be highly effective at suppressing this CIB-induced bias from the tSZ cluster observables by spectrally deprojecting the cluster-correlated CIB at the expense of a small signal-to-noise penalty. Our sciMMF is also robust to modelling uncertainties, namely to the choice of deprojection spectral energy distribution. With it, CIB-free cluster catalogues can be constructed and used for cosmological inference. We conduct the first case study towards developing optimal foreground mitigation strategies for neutral hydrogen (HI) intensity mapping using radio interferometers at low redshifts. A pipeline for simulation, foreground mitigation and power spectrum estimation is built, which can be used for ongoing and future surveys using MeerKAT and Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO). It simulates realistic sky signals to generate visibility data given instrument and observation specifications, which is subsequently used to perform foreground mitigation and power spectrum estimation. A quadratic estimator formalism is developed to estimate the temperature power spectrum in visibility space. Using MeerKAT telescope specifications for observations in the redshift range z~0.25-0.30 corresponding to the MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) survey, we present a case study where we compare different approaches of foreground mitigation. We find that component separation in visibility space provides a more accurate estimation of HI clustering comparing to foreground avoidance, with the uncertainties being 30 per cent smaller. Power spectrum estimation from image is found to be less robust with larger bias and more information loss when compared to estimation in visibility. We conclude that for z~0.25-0.30, the MIGHTEE survey will be capable of measuring the HI power spectrum from k~0.5 Mpc$^{-1}$ to k~10 Mpc$^{-1}$ with high accuracy. We are the first to show that, at low redshift, component separation in visibility space suppresses foreground contamination at large line-of-sight scales, allowing measurement of HI power spectrum closer to the foreground wedge, crucial for data analysis towards future detections., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures. Multi-frequency matched filters (MMFs) are routinely used to detect galaxy clusters from CMB data through the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect, leading to cluster catalogues that can be used for cosmological inference. In order to be applied, MMFs require knowledge of the cross-frequency power spectra of the noise in the maps. This is typically estimated from the data and taken to be equal to the power spectra of the data, assuming the contribution from the tSZ signal of the detections to be negligible. Using both analytical arguments and \textit{Planck}-like mock observations, we show that doing so causes the MMF noise to be overestimated, inducing a loss of signal-to-noise. Furthermore, the MMF cluster observable (the amplitude $\hat{y}_0$ or the signal-to-noise $q$) does not behave as expected, which can potentially bias cosmological inference. In particular, the observable becomes biased with respect to its theoretical prediction and displays a variance that also differs from its predicted value. We propose an iterative MMF (iMMF) approach designed to mitigate these effects. In this approach, after a first standard MMF step, the noise power spectra are reestimated by masking the detections from the data, delivering an updated iterative cluster catalogue. Applying our iMMF to our \textit{Planck}-like mock observations, we find that the aforementioned effects are completely suppressed. This leads to a signal-to-noise gain relative to the standard MMF, with more significant detections and a higher number of them, and to a cluster observable with the expected theoretical properties, thus eliminating any potential biases in the cosmological constraints., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, submitted for publication to MNRAS

In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the $H_0$--$S_8$ tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals.[Abridged], Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021. 224 pages, 27 figures. Using a toy model for the interactions between a defect-forming field and the photon field where the photon becomes massive in the defect core (motivated by recent work on defects in the 2HDM), we study the impact on photon propagation in the background of the defect. We find that, when the photon frequency (in natural units) is much lower than the symmetry breaking scale, domain walls reflect most of an incoming photon signal leading to potential interesting astrophysical signals. We also adapt the calculations for vortices and monopoles. We find that the case of strings is very similar to the standard case for massive scalar particles, but in the case of monopoles the cross-section is proportional to the geometrical area of the monopole., Comment: 8 pages, to appear in Physics Letters B

The 21cm line of neutral hydrogen (HI) opens a new avenue in our exploration of the structure and evolution of the Universe. It provides complementary data to the current large-scale structure observations with different systematics, and thus it will be used to improve our understanding of the $\Lambda$CDM model. Among several radio cosmological surveys designed to measure this line, BINGO is a single-dish telescope mainly designed to detect baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) at low redshifts ($0.127< z<0.449$). Our goal is to assess the fiducial BINGO setup and its capabilities of constraining the cosmological parameters, and to analyze the effect of different instrument configurations. We used the Phase 1 fiducial configuration of the BINGO telescope to perform our cosmological forecasts. In addition, we investigated the impact of several instrumental setups, taking into account some instrumental systematics, and different cosmological models. Combining BINGO with Planck temperature and polarization data, the projected constraint improves from a $13\%$ and $25\%$ precision measurement at the $68\%$ confidence level with Planck only to $1\%$ and $3\%$ for the Hubble constant and the dark energy equation of state (EoS), respectively, within the wCDM model. Assuming a Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parameterization, the EoS parameters have standard deviations given by $\sigma_{w_0} = 0.30$ and $\sigma_{w_a} = 1.2$, which are improvements on the order of $30\%$ with respect to Planck alone. Also, we can access information about the HI density and bias, obtaining $\sim 8.5\%$ and $\sim 6\%$ precision, respectively, assuming they vary with redshift at three independent bins. The fiducial BINGO configuration will be able to extract significant cosmological information from the HI distribution and provide constraints competitive with current and future cosmological surveys. Observations of the redshifted 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen (HI) are a new and powerful window of observation that offers us the possibility to map the spatial distribution of cosmic HI and learn about cosmology. BINGO (Baryon Acoustic Oscillations [BAO] from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations) is a new unique radio telescope designed to be one of the first to probe BAO at radio frequencies. BINGO has two science goals: cosmology and astrophysics. Cosmology is the main science goal and the driver for BINGO's design and strategy. The key of BINGO is to detect the low redshift BAO to put strong constraints in the dark sector models. Given the versatility of the BINGO telescope, a secondary goal is astrophysics, where BINGO can help discover and study Fast Radio Bursts (FRB) and other transients, Galactic and extragalactic science. In this paper, we introduce the latest progress of the BINGO project, its science goals, describing the scientific potential of the project in each science and the new developments obtained by the collaboration. We introduce the BINGO project and its science goals and give a general summary of recent developments in construction, science potential and pipeline development obtained by the BINGO collaboration in the past few years. We show that BINGO will be able to obtain competitive constraints for the dark sector, and also that will allow for the discovery of several FRBs in the southern hemisphere. The capacity of BINGO in obtaining information from 21-cm is also tested in the pipeline introduced here. There is still no measurement of the BAO in radio, and studying cosmology in this new window of observations is one of the most promising advances in the field. Matched filters are routinely used in cosmology in order to detect galaxy clusters from mm observations through their thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) signature. In addition, they naturally provide an observable, the detection signal-to-noise or significance, which can be used as a mass proxy in number counts analyses of tSZ-selected cluster samples. In this work, we show that this observable is, in general, non-Gaussian, and that it suffers from a positive bias, which we refer to as optimisation bias. Both aspects arise from the fact that the signal-to-noise is constructed through an optimisation operation on noisy data, and hold even if the cluster signal is modelled perfectly well, no foregrounds are present, and the noise is Gaussian. After reviewing the general mathematical formalism underlying matched filters, we study the statistics of the signal-to-noise with a set Monte Carlo mock observations, finding it to be well-described by a unit-variance Gaussian for signal-to-noise values of 6 and above, and quantify the magnitude of the optimisation bias, for which we give an approximate expression that may be used in practice. We also consider the impact of the bias on the cluster number counts of Planck and the Simons Observatory (SO), finding it to be negligible for the former and potentially significant for the latter.

BINGO (BAO from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations) is a unique radio telescope designed to map the intensity of neutral hydrogen distribution at cosmological distances, making the first detection of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) in the frequency band 980 MHz - 1260 MHz, corresponding to a redshift range $0.127 < z < 0.449$. BAO is one of the most powerful probes of cosmological parameters and BINGO was designed to detect the BAO signal to a level that makes it possible to put new constraints on the equation of state of dark energy. The telescope will be built in Para\'iba, Brazil and consists of two $\thicksim$ 40m mirrors, a feedhorn array of 28 horns, and no moving parts, working as a drift-scan instrument. It will cover a $15^{\circ}$ declination strip centered at $\sim \delta=-15^{\circ}$, mapping $\sim 5400$ square degrees in the sky. The BINGO consortium is led by University of S\~ao Paulo with co-leadership at National Institute for Space Research and Campina Grande Federal University (Brazil). Model-independent constraints on modified gravity models hitherto exist mainly on linear scales. A recently developed formalism presented a consistent parameterisation that is valid on all scales. Using this approach, we perform model-independent modified gravity $N$-body simulations on all cosmological scales with a time-dependent $\mu$. We present convergence tests of our simulations, and we examine how well existing fitting functions reproduce the non-linear matter power spectrum of the simulations. We find that although there is a significant variation in the accuracy of all of the fitting functions over the parameter space of our simulations, the ReACT framework delivers the most consistent performance for the matter power spectrum. We comment on how this might be improved to the level required for future surveys such as Euclid and the Vera Rubin Telescope (LSST). We also show how to compute weak-lensing observables consistently from the simulated matter power spectra in our approach, and show that ReACT also performs best when fitting the weak-lensing observables. We present the first detailed case study using quadratic estimators (QE) to diagnose and remove systematics present in observed Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps. In this work we focus on the temperature to polarization leakage. We use an iterative QE analysis to remove systematics, in analogy to de-lensing, recovering the primordial B-mode signal and the systematic maps. We introduce a new Gaussian filtering scheme crucial to stable convergence of the iterative cleaning procedure and validate with comparisons to semi-analytical forecasts. We study the limitations of this method by examining its performance both on idealized simulations and on more realistic, non-ideal simulations, where we assume varying de-lensing efficiencies. Finally, we quantify the systematic cleaning efficiency by presenting a likelihood analysis on the tensor to scalar ratio, $r$, and demonstrate that the blind cleaning results in an un-biased measurement of $r$, reducing the systematic induced B-mode power by nearly two orders of magnitude., Comment: 30 pages, 12 figures, prepared for submission to JCAP

Spectral distortions (SDs) of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) provide a powerful tool for studying particle physics. Here we compute the distortion signals from decaying particles that convert directly into photons at different epochs during cosmic history, focusing on injection energies $E_\mathrm{inj}\lesssim 20\,\mathrm{keV}$. We deliver a comprehensive library of SD solutions that can be used to study a wide range of particle physics scenarios. We use {\tt CosmoTherm} to compute the SD signals, including effects on the ionization history and opacities of the Universe. We also consider the effect of blackbody-induced stimulated decay, which can modify the injection history significantly. Then, we use data from COBE/FIRAS and EDGES to constrain the properties of the decaying particles. We explore scenarios where these provide a dark matter (DM) candidate or constitute only a small fraction of DM. We complement the SD constraints with CMB anisotropy constraints, highlighting new effects from injections at very-low photon energies ($h\nu\lesssim 10^{-4}\,\mathrm{eV}$). Our model-independent constraints exhibit rich structures in the lifetime-energy domain, covering injection energies $E_\mathrm{inj}\simeq 10^{-10}\mathrm{eV}-10\mathrm{keV}$ and lifetimes $\tau_X\simeq 10^5\,\mathrm{s}-10^{33}\mathrm{s}$. We discuss the constraints on axions and axion-like particles that convert directly into two photons, revising existing SD constraints in the literature. Our limits are competitive with other constraints for axion masses $m_a c^2\gtrsim 27\,\mathrm{eV}$ and we find that simple estimates based on the overall energetics are generally inaccurate. Future CMB spectrometers could significantly improve the obtained constraints, thus providing an important complementary probe of early-universe particle physics., Comment: match published version

A quasi-static approximation (QSA) for modified gravity can be applied in a number of ways. We consider three different analytical formulations based on applying this approximation to: (1) the field equations; (2) the equations for the two metric potentials; (3) the use of the attractor solution derived within the Equation of State (EoS) approach. We assess the veracity of these implementations on the effective gravitational constant ($\mu$) and the slip parameter ($\eta$), within the framework of Horndeski models. In particular, for a set of models we compare cosmological observables, i.e., the matter power spectrum and the CMB temperature and lensing angular power spectra, computed using the QSA, with exact numerical solutions. To do that, we use a newly developed branch of the CLASS code: QSA_class. All three approaches agree exactly on very small scales. Typically, we find that, except for $f(R)$ models where all the three approaches lead to the same result, the quasi-static approximations differ from the numerical calculations on large scales ($k \lesssim 3 - 4 \times 10^{-3}\,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$). Cosmological observables are reproduced to within 1% up to scales ${\rm K} = k/H_0$ of the order of a few and $\ell>5$ for the approaches based on the field equations and on the EoS, and we also do not find any appreciable difference if we use the scale-dependent expressions for $\mu$ and $\eta$ with respect to the value on small scales, showing that the formalism and the conclusions are reliable and robust, fixing the range of applicability of the formalism. We discuss why the expressions derived from the equations for the potentials have limited applicability. The Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) with spontaneously broken $Z_2$ symmetry predicts a production of domain walls at the electroweak scale. We derive cosmological constraints on model parameters for both Type-I and Type-II 2HDMs from the requirement that domain walls do not dominate the Universe by the present day. For Type-I 2HDMs, we deduce the lower bound on the key parameter $\tan\beta > 10^5$ for a wide range of Higgs-boson masses $\sim$ 100 GeV or greater close to the Standard Model alignment limit. In addition, we perform numerical simulations of the 2HDM with an approximate as well as an exact $Z_2$ symmetry but biased initial conditions. In both cases, we find that domain wall networks are unstable and, hence, do not survive at late times. The domain walls experience an exponential suppression of scaling in these models which can help ameliorate the stringent constraints found in the case of an exact discrete symmetry. For a 2HDM with softly-broken $Z_2$ symmetry, we relate the size of this exponential suppression to the soft-breaking bilinear parameter $m_{12}$ allowing limits to be placed on this parameter of order $\mu$eV, such that domain wall domination can be avoided. In particular, for Type-II 2HDMs, we obtain a corresponding lower limit on the CP-odd phase $\theta$ generated by QCD instantons, $\theta \ \stackrel{>}{{}_\sim}\ 10^{-11}/(\sin\beta \cos\beta)$, which is in some tension with the upper limit of $\theta \ \stackrel{<}{{}_\sim}\ 10^{-11}$--$10^{-10}$, as derived from the non-observation of a non-zero neutron electric dipole moment. For a $Z_2$-symmetric 2HDM with biased initial conditions, we are able to relate the size of the exponential suppression to a biasing parameter $\varepsilon$ so as to avoid domain wall domination., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

The Two Higgs Doublet Model predicts the emergence of 3 distinct domain wall solutions arising from the breaking of 3 accidental global symmetries, $Z_2$, CP1 and CP2, at the electroweak scale for specific choices of the model parameters. We present numerical kink solutions to the field equations in all three cases along with dynamical simulations of the models in (2+1) and (3+1) dimensions. For each kink solution we define an associated topological current. In all three cases simulations produce a network of domain walls which deviates from power law scaling in Minkowski and FRW simulations. This deviation is attributed to a winding of the electroweak group parameters around the domain walls in our simulations. We observe a local violation of the neutral vacuum condition on the domain walls in our simulations. This violation is attributed to relative electroweak transformations across the domain walls which is a general feature emerging from random initial conditions., Comment: 45 pages, 23 figures

Cosmological Birefringence (CB) is a phenomenon, caused by parity violating modifications to electrodynamics, whereby the linear polarisation angle of light changes as photons traverse a vacuum. It is possible to use a number of different analysis techniques to constrain this effect using Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarisation observations. We investigate two different methods of constraining direction dependent birefringence for present and future CMB experiments including BICEP/Keck, Simons Observatory (SO), and LiteBIRD . Specifically we compare the constraints placed on anisotropic CB from a quadratic estimator technique to those derived from estimates of the $B$-mode power-spectrum for the three different experiments. The constraints derived from estimates of the $B$-mode power spectrum are found to be comparable to those derived from quadratic estimator for BICEP/Keck and SO, but not LiteBIRD due to its larger sky coverage. These forecasted upper bounds for CB are converted to constraints on primordial magnetic fields and the coupling between photons and pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons. Finally we show that even with the best constraints on CB, for the respective experiments, the potentially induced $B$-mode power can act as a significant contaminant in the prospective measurement of primordial $B$-modes., Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, prepared for submission to JCAP

We present optical and near-infrared imaging covering a $\sim$1.53 deg$^2$ region in the Super-Cluster Assisted Shear Survey (SuperCLASS) field, which aims to make the first robust weak lensing measurement at radio wavelengths. We derive photometric redshifts for $\approx$176,000 sources down to $i^\prime_{\rm AB}\sim24$ and present photometric redshifts for 1.4 GHz $e$-MERLIN and VLA detected radio sources found in the central 0.26 deg$^{2}$. We compile an initial catalog of 149 radio sources brighter than S$_{1.4}>75$ $\mu$Jy and find their photometric redshifts span $07 \sigma$ in the density map and we confirm the photometric redshifts are consistent with previously measured spectra from a few galaxies at the cluster centers., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS on March 3 2020

The SuperCLuster Assisted Shear Survey (SuperCLASS) is a legacy programme using the e-MERLIN interferometric array. The aim is to observe the sky at L-band (1.4 GHz) to a r.m.s. of 7 uJy per beam over an area of ~1 square degree centred on the Abell 981 supercluster. The main scientific objectives of the project are: (i) to detect the effects of weak lensing in the radio in preparation for similar measurements with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA); (ii) an extinction free census of star formation and AGN activity out to z~1. In this paper we give an overview of the project including the science goals and multi-wavelength coverage before presenting the first data release. We have analysed around 400 hours of e-MERLIN data allowing us to create a Data Release 1 (DR1) mosaic of ~0.26 square degrees to the full depth. These observations have been supplemented with complementary radio observations from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and optical/near infra-red observations taken with the Subaru, Canada-France-Hawaii and Spitzer Telescopes. The main data product is a catalogue of 887 sources detected by the VLA, of which 395 are detected by e-MERLIN and 197 of these are resolved. We have investigated the size, flux and spectral index properties of these sources finding them compatible with previous studies. Preliminary photometric redshifts, and an assessment of galaxy shapes measured in the radio data, combined with a radio-optical cross-correlation technique probing cosmic shear in a supercluster environment, are presented in companion papers., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables. We describe the first results on weak gravitational lensing from the SuperCLASS survey: the first survey specifically designed to measure the weak lensing effect in radio-wavelength data, both alone and in cross-correlation with optical data. We analyse 1.53 square degrees of optical data from the Subaru telescope and 0.26 square degrees of radio data from the e-MERLIN and VLA telescopes (the DR1 data set). Using standard methodologies on the optical data only we make a significant (10 sigma) detection of the weak lensing signal (a shear power spectrum) due to the massive supercluster of galaxies in the targeted region. For the radio data we develop a new method to measure the shapes of galaxies from the interferometric data, and we construct a simulation pipeline to validate this method. We then apply this analysis to our radio observations, treating the e-MERLIN and VLA data independently. We achieve source densities of 0.5 per square arcmin in the VLA data and 0.06 per square arcmin in the e-MERLIN data, numbers which prove too small to allow a detection of a weak lensing signal in either the radio data alone or in cross-correlation with the optical data. Finally, we show preliminary results from a visibility-plane combination of the data from e-MERLIN and VLA which will be used for the forthcoming full SuperCLASS data release. This approach to data combination is expected to enhance both the number density of weak lensing sources available and the fidelity with which their shapes can be measured., Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures, 3 tables. We discuss axion dark matter detection via two mechanisms: spontaneous decays and resonant conversion in neutron star magnetospheres. For decays, we show that the brightness temperature signal, rather than flux, is a less ambiguous measure for selecting candidate objects. This is owing principally to the finite beam width of telescopes which prevents one from being sensitive to the total flux from the object. With this in mind, we argue that the large surface-mass-density of the galactic centre or the Virgo cluster centre offers the best chance of improving current constraints on the axion-photon coupling via spontaneous decays. For the neutron star case, we first carry out a detailed study of mixing in magnetised plasmas. We derive transport equations for the axion-photon system via a controlled gradient expansion, allowing us to address inhomogeneous mass-shell constraints for arbitrary momenta. We then derive a non-perturbative Landau-Zener formula for the conversion probability valid across the range of relativistic and non-relativistic axions and show that the standard perturbative resonant conversion amplitude is a truncation of this result in the non-adiabatic limit. Our treatment reveals that that infalling dark matter axions typically convert non-adiabatically in magnetospheres. We describe the limitations of one-dimensional mixing equations and explain how three-dimensional effects activate new photon polarisations, including longitudinal modes and illustrate these arguments with numerical simulations in higher dimensions. We find that the bandwidth of the radio signal is dominated by Doppler broadening from the relative motion of the neutron star with respect to the observer. Therefore, we conclude that the radio signal from the resonant decay is weaker than previously thought, which means one relies on local density peaks to probe weaker axion-photon couplings., Comment: 31 pages, 14 figures and 2 tables. The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment sited on Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert in Chile that promises to provide breakthrough discoveries in fundamental physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. Supported by the Simons Foundation, the Heising-Simons Foundation, and with contributions from collaborating institutions, SO will see first light in 2021 and start a five year survey in 2022. SO has 287 collaborators from 12 countries and 53 institutions, including 85 students and 90 postdocs. The SO experiment in its currently funded form ('SO-Nominal') consists of three 0.4 m Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m Large Aperture Telescope (LAT). Optimized for minimizing systematic errors in polarization measurements at large angular scales, the SATs will perform a deep, degree-scale survey of 10% of the sky to search for the signature of primordial gravitational waves. The LAT will survey 40% of the sky with arc-minute resolution. These observations will measure (or limit) the sum of neutrino masses, search for light relics, measure the early behavior of Dark Energy, and refine our understanding of the intergalactic medium, clusters and the role of feedback in galaxy formation. With up to ten times the sensitivity and five times the angular resolution of the Planck satellite, and roughly an order of magnitude increase in mapping speed over currently operating ("Stage 3") experiments, SO will measure the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuations to exquisite precision in six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz. We use the Equation of State (EoS) approach to study the evolution of the dark sector in Horndeski models, the most general scalar-tensor theories with second order equations of motion. By including the effects of the dark sector into our code EoS\_class, we demonstrate the numerical stability of the formalism and excellent agreement with results from other publicly available codes for a range of parameters describing the evolution of the function characterising the perturbations for Horndeski models, $\alpha_{\rm x}$, with ${\rm x}=\{{\rm K}, {\rm B}, {\rm M}, {\rm T}\}$. After demonstrating that on sub-horizon scales ($k\gtrsim 10^{-3}~{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ at $z=0$) velocity perturbations in both the matter and the dark sector are typically subdominant with respect to density perturbations in the equation of state for perturbations, we find an attractor solution for the dark sector gauge-invariant density perturbation $\Delta_{\rm ds}$ by neglecting its time derivatives in the equation describing its time evolution, as commonly done in the well-known quasi-static approximation. Using this result, we provide simplified expressions for the equation-of-state functions: the dark sector entropy perturbations $w_{\rm ds}\Gamma_{\rm ds}$ and anisotropic stress $w_{\rm ds}\Pi_{\rm ds}$. From this we derive a growth factor-like equation for both matter and dark sector and are able to capture the relevant physics for several observables with great accuracy. We finally present new analytical expressions for the well-known modified gravity phenomenological functions $\mu$, $\eta$ and $\Sigma$ for a generic Horndeski model as functions of $\alpha_{\rm x}$. We show that on small scales they reproduce expressions presented in previous works, but on large scales, we find differences with respect to other works., Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures. We investigate generalized Einstein-Aether theories that are compatible with the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy, polarisation, and lensing data. For a given dark energy equation of state, $w_{\rm de}$, we formulate a designer approach and we investigate their impact on the CMB temperature anisotropy and matter power spectra. We use the Equation of State approach to parametrize the perturbations and find that this approach is particularly useful in identifying the most suitable and numerically efficient parameters to explore in a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis. We find the data constrains models with $w_{\rm de} = -1$ to be compatible with $\Lambda$CDM. For $w_{\rm de} \not= -1$ models, which avoid the gravitational waves constraint through the entropy perturbation, we constrain $w_{\rm de}$ to be $w_{\rm de } = -1.06^{+0.08}_{-0.03}$ (CMB) and $w_{\rm de } =-1.04^{+0.05}_{-0.02}$ (CMB+Lensing) at $68\%$C.L., and find that these models can be different from $\Lambda$CDM and still be compatible with the data. We also find that these models can ameliorate some anomalies in $\Lambda$CDM when confronted with data, such as the low-$\ell$ and high-$k$ power in the CMB temperature anisotropy and matter power spectra respectively, but not simultaneously. We also investigate the anomalous lensing amplitude, quantified by $A_{\rm lens}$, and find that that for $w_{\rm de} = -1$ models, $A_{\rm lens} = 1.15^{+0.07}_{-0.08}$ (CMB) and $A_{\rm lens} = 1.12\pm0.05$ (CMB+Lensing) at $68\%$C.L. $\sim$ 2$\sigma$ larger than expected, similar to previous analyses of $\Lambda$CDM., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. We present a detailed overview of the cosmological surveys that will be carried out with Phase 1 of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA1), and the science that they will enable. We highlight three main surveys: a medium-deep continuum weak lensing and low-redshift spectroscopic HI galaxy survey over 5,000 sqdeg; a wide and deep continuum galaxy and HI intensity mapping survey over 20,000 sqdeg from z = 0.35 - 3; and a deep, high-redshift HI intensity mapping survey over 100 sqdeg from z = 3 - 6. Taken together, these surveys will achieve an array of important scientific goals: measuring the equation of state of dark energy out to z ~ 3 with percent-level precision measurements of the cosmic expansion rate; constraining possible deviations from General Relativity on cosmological scales by measuring the growth rate of structure through multiple independent methods; mapping the structure of the Universe on the largest accessible scales, thus constraining fundamental properties such as isotropy, homogeneity, and non-Gaussianity; and measuring the HI density and bias out to z = 6. These surveys will also provide highly complementary clustering and weak lensing measurements that have independent systematic uncertainties to those of optical surveys like LSST and Euclid, leading to a multitude of synergies that can improve constraints significantly beyond what optical or radio surveys can achieve on their own. The Simons Observatory (SO) is a new cosmic microwave background experiment being built on Cerro Toco in Chile, due to begin observations in the early 2020s. We describe the scientific goals of the experiment, motivate the design, and forecast its performance. SO will measure the temperature and polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background in six frequency bands: 27, 39, 93, 145, 225 and 280 GHz. The initial configuration of SO will have three small-aperture 0.5-m telescopes (SATs) and one large-aperture 6-m telescope (LAT), with a total of 60,000 cryogenic bolometers. Our key science goals are to characterize the primordial perturbations, measure the number of relativistic species and the mass of neutrinos, test for deviations from a cosmological constant, improve our understanding of galaxy evolution, and constrain the duration of reionization. The SATs will target the largest angular scales observable from Chile, mapping ~10% of the sky to a white noise level of 2 $\mu$K-arcmin in combined 93 and 145 GHz bands, to measure the primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, at a target level of $\sigma(r)=0.003$. The LAT will map ~40% of the sky at arcminute angular resolution to an expected white noise level of 6 $\mu$K-arcmin in combined 93 and 145 GHz bands, overlapping with the majority of the LSST sky region and partially with DESI. With up to an order of magnitude lower polarization noise than maps from the Planck satellite, the high-resolution sky maps will constrain cosmological parameters derived from the damping tail, gravitational lensing of the microwave background, the primordial bispectrum, and the thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects, and will aid in delensing the large-angle polarization signal to measure the tensor-to-scalar ratio. We explore the constraints on dark sector models imposed by the recent observation of coincident gravitational waves and gamma rays from a binary neutron star merger, GW170817. Rather than focusing on specific models as has been considered by other authors, we explore this in the context of the equation of state approach of which the specific models are special cases. After confirming the strong constraints found by others for Horndeski, Einstein-Aether and massive gravity models, we discuss how it is possible to construct models which might evade the constraints from GW170817 but still leading to cosmologically interesting modifications to gravity. Possible examples are ``miracle cancellations" such as in $f(R)$ models, nonlocal models and higher-order derivatives. The latter two rely on the dimensionless ratio of the wave number of the observed gravitational waves to the Hubble expansion rate being very large ($\sim10^{19}$) which is used to suppress modifications to the speed of gravitational waves., Comment: 10 pages

We review the Equation of State (EoS) approach to dark sector perturbations and apply it to $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity models of dark energy. We show that the EoS approach is numerically stable and use it to set observational constraints on designer models. Within the EoS approach we build an analytical understanding of the dynamics of cosmological perturbations for the designer class of $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity models, characterised by the parameter $B_0$ and the background equation of state of dark energy $w$. When we use the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy, polarisation and lensing data as well as the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data from SDSS and WiggleZ, we find $B_0<0.006$ (95\%CL) for the designer models with $w=-1$. Furthermore, we find $B_0<0.0045$ and $|w+1|<0.002$ (95\%CL) for the designer models with $w\neq -1$. Previous analyses found similar results for designer and Hu-Sawicki $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity models using the Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach (Raveri et al. 2014, Hu et al. 2016), therefore this hints for the fact that generic $f(\mathcal{R})$ models with $w\neq-1$ can be tightly constrained by current cosmological data, complementary to solar system tests (Brax et al. 2008, Faulkner et al. 2007). When compared to a $w$CDM fluid with the same sound speed, we find that the equation of state for $f(\mathcal{R})$ models is better constrained to be close to -1 by about an order of magnitude, due to the strong dependence of the perturbations on $w$., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables

Cosmology has entered an era where the experimental limitations are not due to instrumental sensitivity but instead due to inherent systematic uncertainties in the instrumentation and data analysis methods. The field of HI intensity mapping (IM) is still maturing, however early attempts are already systematics limited. One such systematic limitation is 1/f noise, which largely originates within the instrumentation and manifests as multiplicative gain fluctuations. To date there has been little discussion about the possible impact of 1/f noise on upcoming single-dish HI IM experiments such as BINGO, FAST or SKA. Presented in this work are Monte-Carlo end-to-end simulations of a 30 day HI IM survey using the SKA-MID array covering a bandwidth of 950 and 1410 MHz. These simulations extend 1/f noise models to include not just temporal fluctuations but also correlated gain fluctuations across the receiver bandpass. The power spectral density of the spectral gain fluctuations are modelled as a power-law, and characterised by a parameter $\beta$. It is found that the degree of 1/f noise frequency correlation will be critical to the success of HI IM experiments. Small values of $\beta$ ($\beta$ < 0.25) or high correlation is preferred as this is more easily removed using current component separation techniques. The spectral index of temporal fluctuations ($\alpha$) is also found to have a large impact on signal-to-noise. Telescope slew speed has a smaller impact, and a scan speed of 1 deg s$^{-1}$ should be sufficient for a HI IM survey with the SKA., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables

We investigate the evolution of cosmological perturbations in models of dark energy described by a time-like unit normalized vector field specified by a general function $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{K})$, so-called Generalized Einstein-Aether models. First we study the background dynamics of such models via a designer approach in an attempt to model this theory as dark energy. We find that only one specific form of this designer approach matches $\Lambda$CDM at background order and we also obtain a differential equation which $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{K})$ must satisfy for general $w$CDM cosmologies. We also present the equations of state for perturbations in Generalized Einstein-Aether models, which completely parametrize these models at the level of linear perturbations. A generic feature of modified gravity models is that they introduce new degrees of freedom. By fully eliminating these we are able to express the gauge invariant entropy perturbation and the scalar, vector, and tensor anisotropic stresses in terms of the perturbed fluid variables and metric perturbations only. These can then be used to study the evolution of perturbations in the scalar, vector, and tensor sectors and we use these to evolve the Newtonian gravitational potentials., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, submitted to PRD

Discordance in the $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model can be seen by comparing parameters constrained by CMB measurements to those inferred by probes of large scale structure. Recent improvements in observations, including final data releases from both Planck and SDSS-III BOSS, as well as improved astrophysical uncertainty analysis of CFHTLenS, allows for an update in the quantification of any tension between large and small scales. This paper is intended, primarily, as a discussion on the quantifications of discordance when comparing the parameter constraints of a model when given two different data sets. We consider KL-divergence, comparison of Bayesian evidences and other statistics which are sensitive to the mean, variance and shape of the distributions. However, as a by-product, we present an update to the similar analysis in (Battye, Charnock and Moss; 2015) where we find that, considering new data and treatment of priors, the constraints from the CMB and from a combination of LSS probes are in greater agreement and any tension only persists to a minor degree. In particular, we find the parameter constraints from the combination of LSS probes which are most discrepant with the Planck2015+Pol+BAO parameter distributions can be quantified at a 2.55$\sigma$ tension using the method introduced in (Battye, Charnock and Moss; 2015). If instead we use the distributions constrained by the combination of LSS probes which are in greatest agreement with those from Planck2015+Pol+BAO this tension is only 0.76$\sigma$., Comment: 13 pages + 5 page abstract, 10 figures

We develop a new method of extracting simultaneous measurements of weak lensing shear and a local rotation of the plane of polarization using observations of resolved radio sources. We show that the direction of polarization is statistically linked with that of the gradient of the total intensity field, and this provides the basis of our method. Using a number of sources spread over the sky, this method allows constraints to be placed on cosmic shear and birefringence, and it can be applied to any resolved radio sources for which such a correlation exists. Assuming that the rotation and shear are constant across the source, we use this relationship to construct a quadratic estimator and investigate its properties using simulated observations. We develop a calibration scheme using simulations based on the observed images to mitigate a bias which occurs in the presence of measurement errors and an astrophysical scatter on the polarization. The method is applied directly to archival data of radio galaxies where we measure a mean rotation signal of $\left<\omega\right>=-2.03^{\circ}\pm0.75^{\circ}$ and an average shear compatible with zero using 30 reliable sources. This level of constraint on an overall rotation is comparable with current leading constraints from CMB experiments and is expected to increase by at least an order of magnitude with future high precision radio surveys, such as those performed by the SKA. 21cm intensity mapping is a novel approach aimed at measuring the power spectrum of density fluctuations and deducing cosmological information, notably from the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). We give an update on the progress of BAO from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations (BINGO) which is a single dish intensity mapping project. First we explain the basic ideas behind intensity mapping concept before updating the instrument design for BINGO. We study the nature of potentials in scalar field based models for dark energy - with both canonical and noncanonical kinetic terms. We calculate numerically, and using an analytic approximation around $a\approx 1$, potentials for models with constant equation-of-state parameter, $w_{\phi}$. We find that for a wide range of models with canonical and noncanonical kinetic terms there is a simple approximation for the potential that holds when the scale factor is in the range $0.6\lesssim a\lesssim 1.4$. We discuss how this form of the potential can also be used to represent models with non-constant $w_{\phi}$ and, hence, how it could be used in reconstruction from cosmological data., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures. It has been proposed recently that the SKA1-MID could be used to conduct an HI intensity mapping survey that could rival upcoming Stage IV dark energy surveys. However, measuring the weak HI signal is expected to be very challenging due to contaminations such as residual Galactic emission, RFI, and instrumental 1/f noise. Modelling the effects of these contaminants on the cosmological HI signal requires numerical end-to-end simulations. The B-mode polarisation power spectrum in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is about four orders of magnitude fainter than the CMB temperature power spectrum. Any instrumental imperfections that couple temperature fluctuations to B-mode polarisation must therefore be carefully controlled and/or removed. We investigate the role that a scan strategy can have in mitigating certain common systematics by averaging systematic errors down with many crossing angles. We present approximate analytic forms for the error on the recovered B-mode power spectrum that would result from differential gain, differential pointing and differential ellipticity for the case where two detector pairs are used in a polarisation experiment. We use these analytic predictions to search the parameter space of common satellite scan strategies in order to identify those features of a scan strategy that have most impact in mitigating systematic effects. As an example we go on to identify a scan strategy suitable for the CMB satellite proposed for the ESA M5 call. considering the practical considerations of fuel requirement, data rate and the relative orientation of the telescope to the earth. The discovery of apparent cosmological acceleration has spawned a huge number of dark energy and modified gravity theories. The f(R) models of gravity are obtained when one replaces the Ricci scalar in the Einstein-Hilbert action by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar. In this work we provide expressions for the equations of state (EoS) for perturbations which completely characterize the linearized perturbations in f(R) gravity, including the scalar, vector, and tensor modes. The EoS formalism is a powerful and elegant parametrization where the modification to General Relativity are treated as a dark-energy-fluid. We discuss the detectability of large-scale HI intensity fluctuations using the FAST telescope. We present forecasts for the accuracy of measuring the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations and constraining the properties of dark energy. The FAST $19$-beam L-band receivers ($1.05$--$1.45$ GHz) can provide constraints on the matter power spectrum and dark energy equation of state parameters ($w_{0},w_{a}$) that are comparable to the BINGO and CHIME experiments. For one year of integration time we find that the optimal survey area is $6000\,{\rm deg}^2$. However, observing with larger frequency coverage at higher redshift ($0.95$--$1.35$ GHz) improves the projected errorbars on the HI power spectrum by more than $2~\sigma$ confidence level. We develop and apply the position angle-only shear estimator of Whittaker et al. (2014) to realistic galaxy images. This is done by demonstrating the method on the simulations of the GREAT3 challenge (Mandelbaum et al. 2014b), which include contributions from anisotropic PSFs. We measure the position angles of the galaxies using three distinct methods - the integrated light method, quadrupole moments of surface brightness, and using model-based ellipticity measurements provided by IM3SHAPE. A weighting scheme is adopted to address biases in the position angle measurements which arise in the presence of an anisotropic PSF. Biases on the shear estimates, due to measurement errors on the position angles and correlations between the measurement errors and the true position angles, are corrected for using simulated galaxy images and an iterative procedure. The properties of the simulations are estimated using the deep field images provided as part of the challenge. A method is developed to match the distributions of galaxy fluxes and half-light radii from the deep fields to the corresponding distributions in the field of interest. We recover angle-only shear estimates with a performance close to current well-established model and moments-based methods for all three angle measurement techniques. With the temperature power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at least four orders of magnitude larger than the B-mode polarisation power spectrum, any instrumental imperfections that couple temperature to polarisation must be carefully controlled and/or removed. Here we present two new map-making algorithms that can create polarisation maps that are clean of temperature-to-polarisation leakage systematics due to differential gain and pointing between a detector pair. Where a half wave plate is used, we show that the spin-2 systematic due to differential ellipticity can also by removed using our algorithms. The algorithms require no prior knowledge of the imperfections or temperature sky to remove the temperature leakage. Instead, they calculate the systematic and polarisation maps in one step directly from the time ordered data (TOD). The first algorithm is designed to work with scan strategies that have a good range of crossing angles for each map pixel and the second for scan strategies that have a limited range of crossing angles. The first algorithm can also be used to identify if systematic errors that have a particular spin are present in a TOD. We demonstrate the use of both algorithms and the ability to identify systematics with simulations of TOD with realistic scan strategies and instrumental noise., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We discuss methods for performing weak lensing using radio observations to recover information about the intrinsic structural properties of the source galaxies. Radio surveys provide unique information that can benefit weak lensing studies, such as HI emission, which may be used to construct galaxy velocity maps, and polarized synchrotron radiation; both of which provide information about the unlensed galaxy and can be used to reduce galaxy shape noise and the contribution of intrinsic alignments. Using a proxy for the intrinsic position angle of an observed galaxy, we develop techniques for cleanly separating weak gravitational lensing signals from intrinsic alignment contamination in forthcoming radio surveys. Random errors on the intrinsic orientation estimates introduce biases into the shear and intrinsic alignment estimates. However, we show that these biases can be corrected for if the error distribution is accurately known. We demonstrate our methods using simulations, where we reconstruct the shear and intrinsic alignment auto and cross-power spectra in three overlapping redshift bins. We find that the intrinsic position angle information can be used to successfully reconstruct both the lensing and intrinsic alignment power spectra with negligible residual bias., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Any Dark Energy (DE) or Modified Gravity (MG) model that deviates from a cosmological constant requires a consistent treatment of its perturbations, which can be described in terms of an effective entropy perturbation and an anisotropic stress. We have considered a recently proposed generic parameterisation of DE/MG perturbations and compared it to data from the Planck satellite and six galaxy catalogues, including temperature-galaxy (Tg), CMB lensing-galaxy and galaxy-galaxy (gg) correlations. Combining these observables of structure formation with tests of the background expansion allows us to investigate the properties of DE/MG both at the background and the perturbative level. Our constraints on DE/MG are mostly in agreement with the cosmological constant paradigm, while we also find that the constraint on the equation of state w (assumed to be constant) depends on the model assumed for the perturbation evolution. We obtain $w=-0.92^{+0.20}_{-0.16}$ (95% CL; CMB+gg+Tg) in the entropy perturbation scenario; in the anisotropic stress case the result is $w=-0.86^{+0.17}_{-0.16}$. Including the lensing correlations shifts the results towards higher values of w. If we include a prior on the expansion history from recent Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) measurements, we find that the constraints tighten closely around $w=-1$, making it impossible to measure any DE/MG perturbation evolution parameters. If, however, upcoming observations from surveys like DES, Euclid or LSST show indications for a deviation from a cosmological constant, our formalism will be a useful tool towards model selection in the dark sector., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures; minor update for consistency with version accepted by JCAP (13/01/2015)

We present current and future constraints on equations of state for dark sector perturbations. The equations of state considered are those corresponding to a generalized scalar field model and time-diffeomorphism invariant $L(g)$ theories that are equivalent to models of a relativistic elastic medium and also Lorentz violating massive gravity. We develop a theoretical understanding of the observable impact of these models. In order to constrain these models we use CMB temperature data from Planck, BAO measurements, CMB lensing data from Planck and the South Pole Telescope, and weak galaxy lensing data from CFHTLenS. We find non-trivial exclusions on the range of parameters, although the data remains compatible with $w=-1$. We gauge how future experiments will help to constrain the parameters. This is done via a likelihood analysis for CMB experiments such as CoRE and PRISM, and tomographic galaxy weak lensing surveys, focussing in on the potential discriminatory power of Euclid on mildly non-linear scales., Comment: 26 pages; 13 figures (matches published version)

There is a tension between measurements of the amplitude of the power spectrum of density perturbations inferred using the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and directly measured by Large-Scale Structure (LSS) on smaller scales. We show that this tension exists, and is robust, for a range of LSS indicators including clusters, lensing and redshift space distortions and using CMB data from either $Planck$ or WMAP+SPT/ACT. One obvious way to try to reconcile this is the inclusion of a massive neutrino which could be either active or sterile. Using $Planck$ and a combination of all the LSS data we find that (i) for an active neutrino $\sum m_{\nu}= (0.357\pm0.099)\,{\rm eV}$ and (ii) for a sterile neutrino $m_{\rm sterile}^{\rm eff}= (0.67\pm0.18)\,{\rm eV}$ and $\Delta N_{\rm eff}= 0.32\pm0.20$. This is, however, at the expense of a degraded fit to $Planck$ temperature data, and we quantify the residual tension at $2.5\sigma$ and $1.6 \sigma$ for massive and sterile neutrinos respectively. We also consider alternative explanations including a lower redshift for reionization that would be in conflict with polarisation measurements made by WMAP and $ad$-$hoc$ modifications to primordial power spectrum., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures
