We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 6 (1.3 mm) observations of dense cores in three massive molecular clouds within the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Milky Way, including the Dust Ridge cloud e, Sgr C, and the 20 km s-1 cloud, at a spatial resolution of 2000 au. Among the 834 cores identified from the 1.3 mm continuum, we constrain temperatures and linewidths of 253 cores using local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) methods to fit the H2CO and/or CH3CN spectra. We determine their masses using the 1.3 mm dust continuum and derived temperatures, and then evaluate their virial parameters using the H2CO and/or CH3CN linewidths and construct the core mass functions (CMFs). We find that the contribution of external pressure is crucial for the virial equilibrium of the dense cores in the three clouds, which contrasts with the environment in the Galactic disk where dense cores are already bound even without the contribution of external pressure. We also find that the CMFs show a Salpeter-like slope in the high-mass (>~3-6 Msun) end, a change from previous works with our new temperature estimates. Combined with the possible top-heavy initial mass functions (IMFs) in the CMZ, our result suggests that gas accretion and further fragmentation may play important roles in transforming the CMF to the IMF., Comment: ApJ accepted. The disk mass and substructure in young stellar objects suggest that planet formation may start at the protostellar stage through the growth of dust grains. To accurately estimate the grain size at the protostellar stage, we have observed the Class I protostar TMC-1A using the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at the Q (7 mm) and Ka (9 mm) bands at a resolution of ~0.2" and analyzed archival data of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at Band 6 (1.3 mm) and 7 (0.9 mm) that cover the same spatial scale. The VLA images show a compact structure with a size of ~25 au and a spectral index of ~2.5. The ALMA images show compact and extended structures with a spectral index of ~2 at the central ~40 au region and another index of ~3.3 in the outer region. Our SED analysis using the observed fluxes at the four bands suggests one branch with a small grain size of ~0.12 mm and another with a grown grain size of ~4 mm. We also model polarized dust continuum emission adopting the two grain sizes and compare them with an observational result of TMC-1A, suggesting that the small grain size is preferable to the grown grain size. Massive star-forming regions exhibit a rich chemistry with complex gas distributions, especially on small scales. While surveys have yielded constraints on typical gas conditions, they often have coarse spatial resolution and limited bandwidths. Thus, to establish an interpretative framework for these efforts, detailed observations that simultaneously provide high sensitivity, spatial resolution, and large bandwidths for a subset of diverse sources are needed. Here, we present wideband (32 GHz) Submillimeter Array observations of four high-mass star-forming regions (G28.20-0.05, G20.08-0.14 N, G35.58-0.03, W33 Main) at subarcsecond resolution, where we detect and spatially-resolve 100s of lines from over 60 molecules, including many complex organic molecules (COMs). The chemical richness of our sample is consistent with an evolutionary sequence from the line-rich hot cores and HC HII regions of G28.20-0.05 and G20.08-0.14 N to the more chemically-modest UC HII regions in G35.58-0.03, followed by the molecule-poor HII region W33 Main. We detect lines across a range of excitation conditions (Eu=20 to >800 K) and from numerous isotopologues, which enables robust estimates of gas properties. We derive nearly constant COM column density ratios that agree with literature values in other low- and high-mass protostellar cores, supporting the idea that COM abundances are set during the pre-stellar phase. In all regions, we identify spatial offsets among different molecular families, due to a combination of source physical structure and chemistry. In particular, we find potential evidence of carbon grain sublimation in G28.20-0.05 and identify an elemental oxygen gradient and rich sulfur-chemistry in G35.58-0.03. II Zw 40 is a starburst dwarf and merger product, and holds a radio-infrared supernebula excited by thousands of embedded OB stars. We present here observations of three aspects of the supernebula: maps of the K and KU radio continuum that trace dense ionized gas with spatial resolution $\sim0.1^{\prime\prime}$, a spectral data cube of the [S IV]$10.5\mu$m emission line that measures the kinematics of the ionized gas with velocity resolution $4.5$ km s$^{-1}$, and an ALMA spectral cube of the CO(3-2) line that probes the dense warm molecular gas with spatial and velocity resolution comparable to the ionized gas. The observations suggest that the supernebula is the overlap,collision or merger of two star clusters, each associated with an elongated molecular cloud. We accordingly modelled the supernebula with simulations of colliding clusters. The model that best agrees with the data is a grazing collision that has distorted the gas and stars to create the distinctive structures observed. Filaments are believed to play a key role in high-mass star formation. We present a systematic study of the filaments and their hosting clumps in the G35 molecular complex using JCMT SCUBA-2 850 $\micron$ continuum data. We identified five clouds in the complex and 91 filaments within them, some of which form 10 hub-filament systems (HFSs), each with at least 3 hub-composing filaments. We also compiled a catalogue of 350 dense clumps, 183 of which are associated with the filaments. We investigated the physical properties of the filaments and clumps, such as mass, density, and size, and their relation to star formation. We find that the global mass-length trend of the filaments is consistent with a turbulent origin, while the hub-composing filaments of high line masses ($m_{\rm l}\,>$\,230\,$\mathrm{M_{\odot}~pc^{-1}}$) in HFSs deviate from this relation, possibly due to feedback from massive star formation. We also find that the most massive and densest clumps (R\,$>$\,0.2\,pc, M\,$>35\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, $\mathrm{\Sigma}>\,0.05\,\mathrm{g~cm^{-2}}$) are located in the filaments and in the hubs of HFS with the latter bearing a higher probability of occurrence of high-mass star-forming signatures, highlighting the preferential sites of HFSs for high-mass star formation. We do not find significant variation in the clump mass surface density across different evolutionary environments of the clouds, which may reflect the balance between mass accretion and stellar feedback., Comment: 34 pages, 17 figures. The PDS 70 system, hosting two planets within its disk, is an ideal target for examining the effect of planets on dust accumulation, growth, and ongoing planet formation. Here, we present high-resolution ($0.''07 = 8 \ \mathrm{au}$) dust continuum observations of the PDS 70 disk in ALMA Band 3 (3.0 mm). While previous Band 7 observations showed a dust ring with slight asymmetry, our Band 3 observations reveal a more prominent asymmetric peak in the northwest direction, where the intensity is 2.5 times higher than in other directions and the spectral index is at the local minimum with $\alpha_{\mathrm{SED}} \sim 2.2$. This indicates that a substantial amount of dust is accumulated both radially and azimuthally in the peak. We also detect point-source emission around the stellar position in the Band 3 image, which is likely to be free-free emission. We constrain the eccentricity of the outer ring to be $e<0.04$ from the position of the central star and the outer ring. From the comparison with numerical simulations, we constrain the mass of PDS 70c to be less than 4.9 Jupiter masses if the gas turbulence strength $\alpha_{\mathrm{turb}} = 10^{-3}$. Recent observations suggest that planets formation starts early, in protostellar disks of $\le10^5$ yrs, which are characterized by strong interactions with the environment, e.g., through accretion streamers and molecular outflows. To investigate the impact of such phenomena on disk physical and chemical properties it is key to understand what chemistry planets inherit from their natal environment. In the context of the ALMA Large Program Fifty AU STudy of the chemistry in the disk/envelope system of Solar-like protostars (FAUST), we present observations on scales from ~1500 au to ~60 au of H$_2$CO, HDCO, and D$_2$CO towards the young planet-forming disk IRS~63. H$_2$CO probes the gas in the disk as well as in a large scale streamer (~1500 au) impacting onto the South-East (SE) disk side. We detect for the first time deuterated formaldehyde, HDCO and D$_2$CO, in a planet-forming disk, and HDCO in the streamer that is feeding it. This allows us to estimate the deuterium fractionation of H$_2$CO in the disk: [HDCO]/[H$_2$CO]$\sim0.1-0.3$ and [D$_2$CO]/[H$_2$CO]$\sim0.1$. Interestingly, while HDCO follows the H$_2$CO distribution in the disk and in the streamer, the distribution of D$_2$CO is highly asymmetric, with a peak of the emission (and [D]/[H] ratio) in the SE disk side, where the streamer crashes onto the disk. In addition, D$_2$CO is detected in two spots along the blue- and red-shifted outflow. This suggests that: (i) in the disk, HDCO formation is dominated by gas-phase reactions similarly to H$_2$CO, while (ii) D$_2$CO was mainly formed on the grain mantles during the prestellar phase and/or in the disk itself, and is at present released in the gas-phase in the shocks driven by the streamer and the outflow. PDS~70 is a protoplanetary system that hosts two actively accreting gas giants, namely PDS~70b and PDS~70c. The system has a $\sim$60--100 au dusty ring that has been resolved by ALMA, along with circumplanetary disks around the two gas giants. Here we report the first JVLA Q (40--48 GHz), Ka (29--37 GHz), K (18--26 GHz), and X (8--12 GHz) bands continuum observations, and the complementary ALMA Bands 3 ($\sim$98 GHz) and 4 ($\sim$145 GHz) observations towards PDS~70. The dusty ring appears azimuthally asymmetric in our ALMA images. We obtained firm detections at Ka and K bands without spatially resolving the source; we obtained a marginal detection at Q band, and no detection at X band. The spectral indices ($\alpha$) are 5$\pm$1 at 33--44 GHz and 0.6$\pm$0.2 at 22--33 GHz. At 10--22 GHz, the conservative lower limit of $\alpha$ is 1.7. The 33--44 GHz flux density is likely dominated by the optically thin thermal emission of grown dust with $\gtrsim$1 mm maximum grain sizes, which may be associated with the azimuthally asymmetric substructure induced by planet-disk interaction. Since PDS~70 was not detected at X band, we found it hard to explain the low spectral index at 22--33 GHz only with free-free emission. Hence, we attribute the dominant emission at 22--33 GHz to the emission of spinning nanometer-sized dust particles, while free-free emission may partly contribute to emission at this frequency range. In some protoplanetary disks, the emission of spinning nanometer-sized dust particles may resemble the 20--50 GHz excess in the spectra of millimeter-sized dust. The finding of strong continuum emission of spinning nanometer-sized particles can complicate the procedure of constraining the properties of grown dust. Future high-resolution, multi-frequency JVLA/ngVLA and SKA observations may shed light on this issue.

We present a new SMA survey of 47 Class II sources in the Taurus-Auriga region. Our observations made 12 independent samples of flux densities over the 200-400 GHz frequency range. We tightly constrained the spectral indices of most sources to a narrow range of $2.0\pm0.2$; only a handful of spatially resolved (e.g., diameter $>$250 au) disks present larger spectral indices. The simplest interpretation for this result is that the (sub)millimeter luminosities of all of the observed target sources are dominated by very optically thick (e.g., $\tau\gtrsim$5) dust thermal emission. Some previous works that were based on the optically thin assumption thus might have underestimated optical depths by at least one order of magnitude. Assuming DSHARP dust opacities, this corresponds to underestimates of dust masses by a similar factor. Moreover, some population synthesis models show that to explain the observed, narrowly distributed spectral indices, the disks in our selected sample need to have very similar dust temperatures ($T_{\small{dust}}$). Given a specific assumption of median $T_{\small{dust}}$, the maximum grain sizes ($a_{\small{max}}$) can also be constrained, which is a few times smaller than 0.1 mm for $T_{\small{dust}}\sim$100 K and a few mm for $T_{\small{dust}}\sim$24 K. The results may indicate that dust grain growth outside the water snowline is limited by the bouncing/fragmentation barriers. In the Class II disks, the dust mass budget outside of the water snowline may be largely retained instead of being mostly consumed by planet formation. While Class II disks still possess sufficient dust masses to feed planet formation at a later time, it is unknown whether or not dust coagulation and planet formation can be efficient or natural outside of the water snowline., Comment: accepted by Astrophysical Journal Supplement

Filamentary structures are ubiquitously found in high-mass star-forming clouds. To investigate the relationship between filaments and star formation, we carry out the INFANT (INvestigations of massive Filaments ANd sTar formation) survey, a multi-scale, multi-wavelength survey of massive filamentary clouds with ALMA band 3/band 6 and VLA K band. In this first paper, we present the ALMA band 6 continuum observations toward a sample of 8 high-mass star forming filaments. We covered each target with approximately rectangular mosaic field of view with two 12-m array configurations, achieving an angular resolution of $\sim$0.6" (2700 AU at 4.5 kpc) and a continuum rms of $\sim$0.1 mJy/beam ($\sim$0.06 Msun in gas mass assuming 15 K). We identify cores using the getsf and astrodendro and find the former is more robust in terms of both identification and measuring flux densities. We identify in total 183 dense cores (15--36 cores in each cloud) and classify their star formation states via outflow and warm gas tracers. The protostellar cores are statistically more massive than the prestellar cores, possibly indicating further accretion onto cores after formation of protostars. For the high-mass end ($M_\text{core}$ $>$ 1.5 Msun) of the core mass function (CMF) we derive a power-law index of $-$1.15 $\pm$ 0.12 for the whole sample, and $-$1.70 $\pm$ 0.25 for the prestellar population. We also find a steepening trend in CMF with cloud evolution ($-$0.89 $\pm$ 0.15 for the young group v.s. $-$1.44 $\pm$ 0.25 for the evolved group) and discuss its implication for cluster formation., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, accepted for ApJ

The origin of the chemical diversity observed around low-mass protostars probably resides in the earliest history of these systems. We aim to investigate the impact of protostellar feedback on the chemistry and grain growth in the circumstellar medium of multiple stellar systems. In the context of the ALMA Large Program FAUST, we present high-resolution (50 au) observations of CH$_3$OH, H$_2$CO, and SiO and continuum emission at 1.3 mm and 3 mm towards the Corona Australis star cluster. Methanol emission reveals an arc-like structure at $\sim$1800 au from the protostellar system IRS7B along the direction perpendicular to the major axis of the disc. The arc is located at the edge of two elongated continuum structures that define a cone emerging from IRS7B. The region inside the cone is probed by H$_2$CO, while the eastern wall of the arc shows bright emission in SiO, a typical shock tracer. Taking into account the association with a previously detected radio jet imaged with JVLA at 6 cm, the molecular arc reveals for the first time a bow shock driven by IRS7B and a two-sided dust cavity opened by the mass-loss process. For each cavity wall, we derive an average H$_2$ column density of $\sim$7$\times$10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$, a mass of $\sim$9$\times$10$^{-3}$ M$_\odot$, and a lower limit on the dust spectral index of $1.4$. These observations provide the first evidence of a shock and a conical dust cavity opened by the jet driven by IRS7B, with important implications for the chemical enrichment and grain growth in the envelope of Solar System analogues., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. We have comprehensively studied the multi-scale physical properties of the infrared dark cloud (IRDC) G28.34 (the Dragon cloud) with dust polarization and molecular line data from Planck, FCRAO-14m, JCMT, and ALMA. We find that the averaged magnetic fields of clumps tend to be either parallel with or perpendicular to the cloud-scale magnetic fields, while the cores in clump MM4 tend to have magnetic fields aligned with the clump fields. Implementing the relative orientation analysis (for magnetic fields, column density gradients, and local gravity), Velocity Gradient Technique (VGT), and modified Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi (DCF) analysis, we find that: G28.34 is located in a trans-to-sub-Alfv\'{e}nic environment ($\mathcal{M}_{A}=0.74$ within $r=15$ pc); the magnetic field is effectively resisting gravitational collapse in large-scale diffuse gas, but is distorted by gravity within the cloud and affected by star formation activities in high-density regions; and the normalized mass-to-flux ratio tends to increase with increasing density and decreasing radius. Considering the thermal, turbulent, and magnetic supports, we find that the environmental gas of G28.34 is in a super-virial (supported) state, the infrared dark clumps may be in a near-equilibrium state, and core MM4-core4 is in a sub-virial (gravity-dominant) state. In summary, we suggest that magnetic fields dominate gravity and turbulence in the cloud environment at large scales, resulting in relatively slow cloud formation and evolution processes. Within the cloud, gravity could overwhelm magnetic fields and turbulence, allowing local dynamical star formation to happen., Comment: 35 pages, 24 figures. Accepted by ApJ

The previous, high angular resolution 225 GHz ($\sim$1.3 mm) continuum observations on the transitional disk DM Tau have resolved an outer ring at 20-120 au radii that is weakly azimuthally asymmetric. We aimed to examine dust growth and filtration in the outer ring. We performed the $\sim$0$''$.06 ($\sim$8.7 au) resolution Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) 40-48 GHz ($\sim$7 mm; Q band) continuum observations and the complementary observations at lower frequencies. In addition, we analyzed the archival JVLA observations that were taken since 2010. Intriguingly, the Q band image resolved the azimuthally highly asymmetric, knotty dust emission sources close to the inner edge of the outer ring. Fitting the 8-700 GHz spectral energy distribution (SED) with two dust components indicates that the maximum grain size in these knotty dust emission sources is likely $\gtrsim$300 $\mu$m while it is $\lesssim$50 $\mu$m in the rest of the ring. These results may be explained by trapping of inward migrating grown dust close to the ring inner edge. The exact mechanism for developing the azimuthal asymmetry has not yet been identified, which may be due to planet-disk interaction that might also be responsible for the creation of the dust cavity and pressure bump, or the fluid instabilities and vortex formation due to shear motions. Finally, we remark that the asymmetries in DM Tau are hard to diagnose from the $\gtrsim$225 GHz observations owing to a high optical depth at the ring. W43-main is a massive molecular complex located at the interaction of the Scutum arm and the Galactic bar undergoing starburst activities. We aim to investigate the gas dynamics, in particular, the prevailing shock signatures from the cloud to clump scale and assess the impact of shocks on the formation of dense gas and early-stage cores. We have carried out NOEMA and IRAM-30m observations at 3 mm with an angular resolution of $\sim$0.1 pc towards five massive clumps in W43 main. We use CH$_{3}$CCH and H$_{2}$CS lines to trace the extended gas temperature and CH$_{3}$OH lines to probe the volume density of the dense gas ($\gtrsim$10$^{5}$ cm$^{-3}$). The emission of SiO (2-1) is extensive across the region ($\sim$4 pc) and is mostly contained within a low-velocity regime, hinting at a large-scale origin of the shocks. The position-velocity maps of multiple tracers show systematic spatio-kinematic offsets supporting the cloud-cloud collision/merging scenario. We identify an additional extended velocity component in CCH emission, which coincides with one of the velocity components of the larger scale $^{13}$CO (2-1) emission, likely representing an outer, less dense gas layer in the cloud merging process. We find that the V-shaped, asymmetric SiO wings are tightly correlated with localised gas density enhancements, which is direct evidence of dense gas formation and accumulation in shocks. We resolve two categories of NH$_{2}$D cores: ones exhibiting only subsonic to transonic velocity dispersion, and the others with an additional supersonic velocity dispersion. The centroid velocities of the latter cores are correlated with the shock front seen by SiO. The kinematics of the $\sim$0.1 pc NH$_{2}$D cores are heavily imprinted by shock activities, and may represent a population of early-stage cores forming around the shock interface., Comment: 35 pages, 34 figures (including appendices); Accepted in A&A

An inner component misaligned from an outer component in a protoplanetary disk can result in the former casting shadows on the latter. We present a new instance of shadowing on the outer disk around a very low mass star, ZZ~Tau~IRS. Through the analysis of near-infrared (NIR) archival data at $\lambda=1.6$~$\mu$m acquired with the Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope, we identified brightness asymmetries in the top and bottom halves of the highly inclined outer disk, separated by a dark lane. The brighter sides in the top and bottom halves are on the opposite sides, which we attributed to shadows cast by a misaligned inner disk. Radiative transfer modeling of the system with a misaligned angle of 15~deg between the inner and outer disks well reproduced the observations. Additionally, we found an elevated brightness temperature of $^{12}$CO~(3-2) at $r\sim30$~au on the brighter side in NIR wavelengths in the top half disk, which can be explained by the shadowing effect too. While the origin of the misaligned inner disk remains unclear, future monitoring observations to search for temporal variations in brightness asymmetries will likely provide useful clues., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted in AJ

The IRDC G14.225-0.506 is associated with a network of filaments, which result in two different dense hubs, as well as with several signposts of star formation activity. The aim of this work is to study the cm continuum emission to characterize the stellar population in G14.2. We performed deep (~1.5-3 microJy) radio continuum observations at 6 and 3.6 cm using the VLA in the A configuration (~0.3''). We have also made use of observations taken during different days to study the presence of variability at short timescales. We detected a total of 66 sources, 32 in the northern region G14.2-N and 34 in the southern region G14.2-S. Ten of the sources are found to be variable. Based on their spectral index, the emission in G14.2-N is mainly dominated by non-thermal sources while G14.2-S contains more thermal emitters. Approximately 75% of the sources present a counterpart at other wavelengths. In the inner 0.4~pc region around the center of each hub, the number of IR sources in G14.2-N is larger than in G14.2-S by a factor of 4. We also studied the relation between the radio luminosity and the bolometric luminosity, finding that the thermal emission of the studied sources is compatible with thermal radio jets. For our sources with X-ray counterparts, the non-thermal emitters follow a G\"udel-Benz relation with k = 0.03. We found similar levels of fragmentation between G14.2-N and G14.2-S, suggesting that both regions are most likely twin hubs. The non-thermal emission found in the less evolved objects suggests that G14.2-N may be composed of more massive YSOs as well as being in a more advanced evolutionary stage, consistent with the filament-halo gradient in age and mass from previous works. Our results confirm a wider evolutionary sequence starting in G14.2-S as the youngest part, followed by G14.2-N, and ending with the most evolved region M17., Comment: 28 pages, 22 figures. Multiwavelength dust continuum and polarization observations arising from self-scattering have been used to investigate grain sizes in young disks. However, the polarization by self-scattering is low in face-on optically thick disks and puts some of the size constraints from polarization on hold, particularly for the younger and more massive disks. The 1.3 mm emission detected toward the hot ($\gtrsim$400 K) Class 0 disk IRAS 16293-2422 B has been attributed to self-scattering, predicting grain sizes between 200-2000 $\mu$m. We investigate the effects of grain size in the resultant flux and polarization fractions from self-scattering using a hot and massive Class 0 disk model and compare with observations. We compared new and archival high-resolution observations between 1.3 and 18 mm to a set of synthetic models. We have developed a new public tool to automate this process called Synthesizer. This is an easy-to-use program to generate synthetic observations from numerical simulations. Optical depths are in the range of 130 to 2 from 1.3 to 18 mm, respectively. Predictions from significant grain growth populations, including millimetric grains are comparable to the observations at all wavelengths. The polarization fraction produced by self-scattering reaches a maximum of $\sim$0.1% at 1.3 mm for a maximum grain size of 100 $\mu$m, being an order of magnitude lower than that observed with ALMA. From the comparison of Stokes I fluxes, we conclude that significant grain growth could be present in the young Class 0 disk IRAS 16293 B, particularly in the inner hot region ($<10$ au, $T>$ 300 K) where refractory organics evaporate. The polarization produced by self-scattering in our model is not high enough to explain the observations at 1.3 and 7 mm, and effects like dichroic extinction or polarization reversal of elongated aligned grains remain other possible but untested scenarios., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Traditionally, supersonic turbulence is considered to be one of the most likely mechanisms to slow down the gravitational collapse in dense clumps, thereby enabling the formation of massive stars. However, several recent studies have raised differing points of view based on observations carried out with sufficiently high spatial and spectral resolution. These studies call for a re-evaluation of the role turbulence plays in massive star-forming regions. Aims. Our aim is to study the gas properties, especially the turbulence, in a sample of massive star-forming regions with sufficient spatial and spectral resolution, which can both resolve the core fragmentation and the thermal line width. Methods. We observed NH3 metastable lines with the Very Large Array (VLA) to assess the intrinsic turbulence. Results. Analysis of the turbulence distribution histogram for 32 identified NH3 cores reveals the presence of three distinct components. Furthermore, our results suggest that (1) sub- and transonic turbulence is a prevalent (21 of 32) feature of massive star-forming regions and those cold regions are at early evolutionary stage. This investigation indicates that turbulence alone is insufficient to provide the necessary internal pressure required for massive star formation, necessitating further exploration of alternative candidates; and (2) studies of seven multi-core systems indicate that the cores within each system mainly share similar gas properties and masses. However, two of the systems are characterized by the presence of exceptionally cold and dense cores that are situated at the spatial center of each system. RZ Piscium (RZ Psc) is well-known in the variable star field because of its numerous, irregular optical dips in the past five decades, but the nature of the system is heavily debated in the literature. We present multiyear infrared monitoring data from Spitzer and WISE to track the activities of the inner debris production, revealing stochastic infrared variability as short as weekly timescales that is consistent with destroying a 90-km-size asteroid every year. ALMA 1.3 mm data combined with spectral energy distribution modeling show that the disk is compact ($\sim$0.1--13 au radially) and lacks cold gas. The disk is found to be highly inclined and has a significant vertical scale height. These observations confirm that RZ Psc hosts a close to edge-on, highly perturbed debris disk possibly due to migration of recently formed giant planets which might be triggered by the low-mass companion RZ Psc B if the planets formed well beyond the snowlines., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Pre-stellar cores represent a critical evolutionary phase in low-mass star formation. We aim to unveil the detailed thermal structure and density distribution of three early-stage cores, starless core L1517B, and prestellar core L694-2 and L429, with the high angular resolution observations of the NH$_{3}$ (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions obtained with VLA and GBT. In addition, we explore where/if NH$_{3}$ depletes in the central regions. Applying the mid-infrared extinction method to the $\textit{Spitzer}$ 8$~\mu$m map we obtain a high angular resolution hydrogen column density map, and derive the gas density profile to assess the variation of NH$_{3}$ abundance as a function of gas volume density. The measured temperature profiles of L429 and L1517B show a minor decrease towards the core center, dropping from $\sim$9\~K to below 8\~K, and $\sim$11 K to 10 K, while L694-2 has a rather uniform temperature distribution around $\sim$9 K. Among the three cores, L429 has the highest central gas density, close to sonic velocity line-width, and largest localised velocity gradient, all indicative of an advanced evolutionary stage. We resolve that the abundance of NH$_{3}$ becomes two times lower in the central region of L429, occurring around a gas density of 4.4$\times$10$^{4}$$~cm^{-3}$. Compared to Ophiuchus/H-MM1 which shows an even stronger drop of the NH$_{3}$ abundance at 2$\times$10$^{5}$$~cm^{-3}$, the abundance variations of the three cores plus Ophiuchus/H-MM1 suggest a progressive NH$_{3}$ depletion with increasing central density of the core., Comment: 23 pages, 23 figures incl. appendix; A&A accepted

We examined the grain size in the dust ring encircling the 0.19~$M_\sun$ T Tauri star CIDA 1 using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at multiple centimeter wavelengths, with a spatial resolution of 0$\farcs$2--0$\farcs$9. We detected distinct partial-ring structures at these wavelengths around CIDA~1. Based on spatial distributions and spectral indexes, we determined that these centimeter emissions originated from dust, rather than free-free or synchrotron emissions. To estimate the maximum grain size ($a_{\rm max}$) within the ring, we compared the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) with SEDs calculated for different $a_{\rm max}$ values using radiative transfer calculations. Our findings indicate an $a_{\rm max}$ value of approximately 2.5~cm in the ring, assuming the dust opacity can be approximated by the DSHARP models. Embedded, Class 0/I protostellar disks represent the initial condition for planet formation. This calls for better understandings of their bulk properties and the dust grains within them. We model multi-wavelength dust continuum observations of the disk surrounding the Class I protostar TMC1A to provide insight on these properties. The observations can be well fit by a gravitationally self-regulated (i.e., marginally gravitationally unstable and internally heated) disk model, with surface density $\Sigma \sim 1720 (R/10au)^{-1.96} g/cm^2$ and midplane temperature $T_{mid} \sim 185 (R/10au)^{-1.27} K$. The observed disk contains a $m=1$ spiral substructure; we use our model to predict the spiral's pitch angle and the prediction is consistent with the observations. This agreement serves as both a test of our model and strong evidence of the gravitational nature of the spiral. Our model estimates a maximum grain size $a_{max}\sim 196(R/10au)^{-2.45} \mu m$, which is consistent with grain growth being capped by a fragmentation barrier with threshold velocity $\sim 1 m/s$. We further demonstrate that observational properties of TMC1A are typical among the observed population of Class 0/I disks, which hints that traditional methods of disk data analyses based on Gaussian fitting and the assumption of the optically thin dust emission could have systematically underestimated disk size and mass and overestimated grain size., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The powerful, high-energy magnetic activities of young stars play important roles in the magnetohydrodynamics in the innermost parts of the protoplanetary disks. In addition, the associated UV and X-ray emission dictates the photochemistry; moreover, the corona activities can affect the atmosphere of a newborn extra-solar planet. How the UV and X-ray photons are generated, and how they illuminate the disks, are not well understood. Here we report the analyses of the optical and infrared (OIR) photometric monitoring observations and the high angular-resolution centimeter band images of the low-mass (M1 type) pre-main sequence star, DM Tau. We found that the OIR photometric light curves present periodic variations, which is consistent with that the host young star is rotating in the same direction as the natal disk and is hosting at least one giant cold spot. In addition, we resolved that the ionized gas in the DM Tau disk is localized, and its spatial distribution is varying with time. All the present observations can be coherently interpreted, if the giant cold spot is the dominant anisotropic UV and/or X-ray source that illuminates the ambient cone-like region. These results indicate that a detailed theoretical model of the high-energy protostellar emission is essential in the understanding of the space weather around the extra-solar planets and the origin of life., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

We use molecular line data from ALMA, SMA, JCMT, and NANTEN2 to study the multi-scale ($\sim$15-0.005 pc) velocity statistics in the massive star formation region NGC 6334. We find that the non-thermal motions revealed by the velocity dispersion function (VDF) stay supersonic over scales of several orders of magnitudes. The multi-scale non-thermal motions revealed by different instruments do not follow the same continuous power-law, which is because the massive star formation activities near central young stellar objects have increased the non-thermal motions in small-scale and high-density regions. The magnitudes of VDFs vary in different gas materials at the same scale, where the infrared dark clump N6334S in an early evolutionary stage shows a lower level of non-thermal motions than other more evolved clumps due to its more quiescent star formation activity. We find possible signs of small-scale-driven (e.g., by gravitational accretion or outflows) supersonic turbulence in clump N6334IV with a three-point VDF analysis. Crescent-like asymmetric dust structures discovered in protoplanetary disks indicate dust aggregations. Thus, the research on them helps us understand the planet formation process. Here we analyze the ALMA data of the protoplanetary disk around the T-Tauri star SR 21, which has asymmetric structures detected in previous sub-millimeter observations. Imaged at ALMA Band 6 (1.3 mm) with a spatial resolution of about 0.$\arcsec$04, the disk is found to consist of two rings and three asymmetric structures, with two of the asymmetric structures being in the same ring. Compared to the Band 6 image, the Band 3 (2.7 mm) image also shows the three asymmetric structures but with some clumps. The elongated asymmetric structures in the outer ring could be due to the interactions of a growing planet. By fitting the Band 3 and Band 6 dust continuum data, two branches of solutions of maximum dust size in the disk are suggested: one is larger than 1 mm, and the other is smaller than 300 $\mu m$. High-resolution continuum observations at longer wavelengths as well as polarization observations can help break the degeneracy. We also suggest that the prominent spiral previously identified in VLT/SPHERE observations to the south of the star at 0.$\arcsec$25 may be the scattered light counterpart of the Inner Arc, and the structure is a dust-trapping vortex in nature. In this study, we reported the results of high-resolution (0.14 arcsec) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the 225 GHz dust continuum and CO molecular emission lines from the transitional disk around SY Cha. Our high-resolution observations clearly revealed the inner cavity and the central point source for the first time. The radial profile of the ring can be approximated by a bright narrow ring superimposed on a fainter wide ring. Furthermore, we found that there is a weak azimuthal asymmetry in dust continuum emission. For gas emissions, we detected $\rm{}^{12}CO$(2$-$1), $\rm{}^{13}CO$(2$-$1) and $\rm{}C^{18}O$(2$-$1), from which we estimated the total gas mass of the disk to be $2.2\times10^{-4}M_\odot$, assuming a CO/H$_2$ ratio of $10^{-4}$. The observations showed that the gas is present inside the dust cavity. The analysis of the velocity structure of the $\rm{}^{12}CO$(2$-$1) emission line revealed that the velocity is distorted at the location of the dust inner disk, which may be owing to warping of the disk or radial gas flow within the cavity of the dust disk. High-resolution observations of SY Cha showed that this system is composed of a ring and a distorted inner disk, which may be common, as indicated by the survey of transitional disk systems at a resolution of $\sim$0.1~arcsec., Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures

We present ALMA observations with a 800 au resolution and radiative-transfer modelling of the inner part ($r\approx6000$ au) of the ionized accretion flow around a compact star cluster in formation at the center of the luminous ultra-compact (UC) HII region G10.6-0.4. We modeled the flow with an ionized Keplerian disk with and without radial motions in its outer part, or with an external Ulrich envelope. The MCMC fits to the data give total stellar masses $M_\star$ from 120 to $200~M_\odot$, with much smaller ionized-gas masses $M_\mathrm{ion-gas} = 0.2$ to $0.25~M_\odot$. The stellar mass is distributed within the gravitational radius $R_g\approx 1000$ to 1500 au, where the ionized gas is bound. The viewing inclination angle from the face-on orientation is $i = 49$ to $56~\deg$. Radial motions at radii $r > R_g$ converge to $v_{r,0} \approx 8.7$ km/s, or about the speed of sound of ionized gas, indicating that this gas is marginally unbound at most. From additional constraints on the ionizing-photon rate and far-IR luminosity of the region, we conclude that the stellar cluster consists of a few massive stars with $M_\mathrm{star} = 32$ to $60~M_\odot$, or one star in this range of masses accompanied by a population of lower-mass stars. Any active accretion of ionized gas onto the massive (proto)stars is residual. The inferred cluster density is very large, comparable to that reported at similar scales in the Galactic Center. The azimuthal asymmetries of dust rings in protoplanetary disks such as a crescent around young stars are often interpreted as dust traps, and thus as ideal locations for planetesimal and planet formations. Whether such dust traps effectively promote planetesimal formation in disks around very-low-mass stars (VLM; a mass of $\lesssim$0.2~$M_\odot$) is debatable, as the dynamical and grain growth timescales in such systems are long. To investigate grain growth in such systems, we studied the dust ring with crescent around the VLM star ZZ~Tau~IRS using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at centimeter wavelengths. Significant signals were detected around ZZ~Tau~IRS. To estimate the maximum grain size ($a_{\rm max}$) in the crescent, we compared the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) with SEDs for various $a_{\rm max}$ values predicted by radiative transfer calculations. We found $a_{\rm max} \gtrsim$~1~mm and $\lesssim$~60~$\mu$m in the crescent and ring, respectively, though our modeling efforts rely on uncertain dust properties. Our results suggest that grain growth occurred in the ZZ~Tau~IRS disk, relative to sub-micron-sized interstellar medium. We present ALMA dust polarization and molecular line observations toward 4 clumps (I(N), I, IV, and V) in the massive star-forming region NGC 6334. In conjunction with large-scale dust polarization and molecular line data from JCMT, Planck, and NANTEN2, we make a synergistic analysis of relative orientations between magnetic fields ($\theta_{\mathrm{B}}$), column density gradients ($\theta_{\mathrm{NG}}$), local gravity ($\theta_{\mathrm{LG}}$), and velocity gradients ($\theta_{\mathrm{VG}}$) to investigate the multi-scale (from $\sim$30 pc to 0.003 pc) physical properties in NGC 6334. We find that the relative orientation between $\theta_{\mathrm{B}}$ and $\theta_{\mathrm{NG}}$ changes from statistically more perpendicular to parallel as column density ($N_{\mathrm{H_2}}$) increases, which is a signature of trans-to-sub-Alfv\'{e}nic turbulence at complex/cloud scales as revealed by previous numerical studies. Because $\theta_{\mathrm{NG}}$ and $\theta_{\mathrm{LG}}$ are preferentially aligned within the NGC 6334 cloud, we suggest that the more parallel alignment between $\theta_{\mathrm{B}}$ and $\theta_{\mathrm{NG}}$ at higher $N_{\mathrm{H_2}}$ is because the magnetic field line is dragged by gravity. At even higher $N_{\mathrm{H_2}}$, the angle between $\theta_{\mathrm{B}}$ and $\theta_{\mathrm{NG}}$ or $\theta_{\mathrm{LG}}$ transits back to having no preferred orientation or statistically slightly more perpendicular, suggesting that the magnetic field structure is impacted by star formation activities. A statistically more perpendicular alignment is found between $\theta_{\mathrm{B}}$ and $\theta_{\mathrm{VG}}$ throughout our studied $N_{\mathrm{H_2}}$ range, which indicates a trans-to-sub-Alfv\'{e}nic state at small scales as well. Large inner dust gaps in transition disks are frequently posited as evidence of giant planets sculpting gas and dust in the disk, or the opening of a gap by photoevaporative winds. Although the former hypothesis is strongly supported by the observations of planets and deep depletions in gas within the gap some disks, many T Tauri stars hosting transition disks accrete at rates typical for an undepleted disk, raising the question of how gap opening occurs in these objects. We thus present an analysis of the structure of the transition disk around the T Tauri star DM Tau, which is strongly accreting ($\sim 10^{-8.3}~\mathrm{M}_\odot~ \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$) and turbulent ($\alpha=0.078 \pm 0.02$). Using the DALI thermochemical code, we fit disk models to simultaneously reproduce the accretion rate, high level of turbulence, the gas traced by ALMA band 6 observations of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O J=2--1 lines, and the observed dust emission from the mm continuum and spectral energy distribution. We find a shallow depletion in gas surface density of $\sim 10$ relative to the outer disk and a gas rich inner disk is consistent with the observations. The planet mass of $<1$ M$_\mathrm{Jup}$ implied by the gap depth is in tension with predictions for dust trapping in a highly viscous disk, which requires a more massive planet of of $\sim10$M$_\mathrm{Jup}$. To understand the origin of the diversity observed in exoplanetary systems, it is crucial to characterize the early stages of their formation, represented by Solar-type protostars. Likely, the gaseous chemical content of these objects directly depends on the composition of the dust grain mantles formed before the collapse. Directly retrieving the ice mantle composition is challenging, but it can be done indirectly by observing the major components, such as NH3 and CH3OH at cm wavelengths, once they are released into the gas-phase during the warm protostellar stage. We observed several CH3OH and NH3 lines toward three Class 0 protostars in NGC1333 (IRAS 4A1, IRAS 4A2, and IRAS 4B), at high angular resolution (1"; ~300 au) with the VLA interferometer at 24-26 GHz. Using a non-LTE LVG analysis, we derived a similar NH3/CH3OH abundance ratio in the three protostars (<0.5, 0.015-0.5, and 0.003-0.3 for IRAS 4A1, 4A2, and 4B, respectively). Hence, we infer they were born from pre-collapse material with similar physical conditions. Comparing the observed abundance ratios with astrochemical model predictions, we constrained the dust temperature at the time of the mantle formation to be ~17 K, which coincides with the average temperature of the southern NGC 1333 diffuse cloud. We suggest that a brutal event started the collapse that eventually formed IRAS 4A1, 4A2 and 4B, which,therefore, did not experience the usual pre-stellar core phase. We have investigated the protostellar disk around a Class 0/I protostar, L1527 IRS, using multi-wavelength observations of the dust continuum emission at $\lambda=0.87$, 2.1, 3.3, and 6.8 mm obtained by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). Our observations achieved a spatial resolution of $3-13$ au and revealed an edge-on disk structure with a size of $\sim80-100$ au. The emission at 0.87 and 2.1 mm is found to be optically thick within a projected disk radius of $ r_{\rm proj}\lesssim50$ au. The emission at 3.3 and 6.8 mm shows that the power-law index of the dust opacity ($\beta$) is $\beta\sim1.7$ around $ r_{\rm proj}\sim 50$ au, suggesting that grain growth has not yet begun. The dust temperature ($T_{\rm dust}$) shows a steep decrease with $T_{\rm dust}\propto r_{\rm proj}^{-2}$ outside of the VLA clumps previously identified at $r_{\rm proj}\sim20$ au. Furthermore, the disk is gravitationally unstable at $r_{\rm proj}\sim20$ au, as indicated by a Toomre {\it Q} parameter value of $Q\lesssim1.0$. These results suggest that the VLA clumps are formed via gravitational instability, which creates a shadow on the outside of the substructure, resulting in the sudden drop in temperature. The derived dust masses for the VLA clumps are $\gtrsim0.1$ $M_{\rm J}$. Thus, we suggest that Class 0/I disks can be massive enough to be gravitationally unstable, which might be the origin of gas-giant planets in a 20 au radius. Close encounters between young stellar objects in star forming clusters are expected to dramatically perturb circumstellar disks. Such events are witnessed in numerical simulations of star formation, but few direct observations of ongoing encounters have been made. Here we report sub-0".1 resolution Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) observations towards the million year old binary protostar Z CMa in dust continuum and molecular line emission. A point source ~4700 au from the binary has been discovered at both millimeter and centimeter wavelengths. It is located along the extension of a ~2000 au streamer structure previously found in scattered light imaging, whose counterpart in dust and gas emission is also newly identified. Comparison with simulations shows signposts of a rare flyby event in action. Luminosity bursts in young FU Orionis-type stars warm up the surrounding disks of gas and dust, thus inflicting changes on their morphological and chemical composition. In this work, we aim at studying the effects that such bursts may have on the spatial distribution of dust grain sizes and the corresponding spectral index in protoplanetary disks. We use the numerical hydrodynamics code FEOSAD, which simulates the co-evolution of gas, dust, and volatiles in a protoplanetary disk, taking dust growth and back reaction on gas into account. The dependence of the maximum dust size on the water ice mantles is explicitly considered. The burst is initialized by increasing the luminosity of the central star to 100-300 L_sun for a time period of 100 yr. The water snowline shifts during the burst to a larger distance, resulting in the drop of the maximum dust size interior to the snowline position because of more efficient fragmentation of bare grains. After the burst, the water snowline shifts quickly back to its preburst location followed by renewed dust growth. The timescale of dust regrowth after the burst depends on the radial distance so that the dust grains at smaller distances reach the preburst values faster than the dust grains at larger distances. As a result, a broad peak in the radial distribution of the spectral index in the millimeter dust emission develops at \approx 10 au, which shifts further out as the disk evolves and dust grains regrow to preburst values at progressively larger distances. This feature is most pronounced in evolved axisymmetric disks rather than in young gravitationally unstable counterparts, although young disks may still be good candidates if gravitational instability is suppressed. OB star clusters originate from parsec-scale massive molecular clumps. We aim to understand the evolution of temperature and density structures on the intermediate-scale ($\lesssim$0.1-1 pc) extended gas of massive clumps. We performed $\sim$0.1 pc resolution observations (SMA+APEX) of multiple molecular line tracers (e.g., CH$_{3}$CCH, H$_{2}$CS, CH$_{3}$CN, CH$_{3}$OH) which cover a wide range of excitation conditions, towards a sample of eight massive clumps. Based on various radiative transfer models, we constrain the gas temperature and density structures and establish an evolutionary picture, aided by a spatially-dependent virial analysis and abundance ratios of multiple species. We determine temperature radial profiles varying between 30-200 K over a continuous scale, from the center of the clumps out to 0.3-0.4 pc radii. The clumps' radial gas density profiles, described by radial power-laws with slopes between -0.6 and $\sim$-1.5, are steeper for more evolved sources, as suggested by results based on both dust continuum, representing the bulk of the gas ($\sim$10$^{4}$ cm$^{-3}$), and CH$_{3}$OH lines probing the dense gas ($\gtrsim$10$^{6}$-10$^{8}$ cm$^{-3}$) regime. The density contrast between the dense gas and the bulk gas increases with evolution, and may be indicative of spatially and temporally varying star formation efficiencies. The radial profiles of the virial parameter show a global variation towards a sub-virial state as the clump evolves. The line-widths decline with increasing radius around the central core region and increase in the outer envelope, with a slope shallower than the case of the supersonic turbulence ($\,\propto\,$$r^{0.5}$) and the subsonic Kolmogorov scaling ($\,\propto\,$$r^{0.33}$). The systematic targeting of extended Ly$\alpha$ emission around high-redshift quasars resulted in the discovery of rare and bright Enormous Ly$\alpha$ Nebulae (ELANe) associated with multiple active galactic nuclei (AGN). We here initiate "a multiwavelength study of ELAN environments" (AMUSE$^2$) focusing on the ELAN around the $z\sim3$ quasar SDSS J1040+1020, a.k.a. the Fabulous ELAN. We report on VLT/HAWK-I, APEX/LABOCA, JCMT/SCUBA-2, SMA/850$\mu$m, ALMA/CO(5-4) and 2mm observations and compare them to previously published VLT/MUSE data. The continuum and line detections enable a first estimate of the star-formation rates, dust, stellar and molecular gas masses in four objects associated with the ELAN (three AGNs and one Ly$\alpha$ emitter), confirming that the quasar host is the most star-forming (${\rm SFR}\sim500$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) and massive galaxy ($M_{\rm star}\sim10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$) in the system, and thus can be assumed as central. All four embedded objects have similar molecular gas reservoirs ($M_{\rm H_2}\sim10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$), resulting in short depletion time scales. This fact together with the estimated total dark-matter halo mass, $M_{\rm DM}=(0.8-2)\times10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$, implies that this ELAN will evolve into a giant elliptical galaxy. Consistently, the constraint on the baryonic mass budget for the whole system indicates that the majority of baryons should reside in a massive warm-hot reservoir (up to $10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$), needed to complete the baryons count. Additionally, we discuss signatures of gas infall on the compact objects as traced by Ly$\alpha$ radiative transfer effects and the evidence for the alignment between the satellites' spins and their directions to the central., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures, 4 appendix; submitted to ApJ

We present a study of narrow filaments toward a massive infrared dark cloud, NGC 6334S, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Thirteen gas filaments are identified using the H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ line, while a single continuum filament is revealed by the continuum emission. The filaments present a compact radial distribution with a median filament width of $\sim$0.04 pc narrower than the previously proposed `quasi-universal' 0.1~pc filament width. The higher spatial resolution observations and higher-density gas tracer tend to identify even narrower and lower mass filaments. The filament widths are roughly twice the size of embedded cores. The gas filaments are largely supported by thermal motions. The nonthermal motions are predominantly subsonic and transonic in both identified gas filaments and embedded cores, which may imply that stars are likely born in environments of low turbulence. A fraction of embedded objects show a narrower velocity dispersion compared with their corresponding natal filaments, which may indicate that the turbulent dissipation is taking place in these embedded cores. The physical properties (mass, mass per unit length, gas kinematics, and width) of gas filaments are analogous to those of narrow filaments found in low- to high-mass star-forming regions. The more evolved sources are found to be farther away from the filaments, a situation that may have resulted from the relative motions between the YSOs and their natal filaments., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. Previous observations have shown that the $\lesssim$10 au, $\gtrsim$400 K hot inner disk of the archetypal accretion outburst young stellar object, FU Ori, is dominated by viscous heating. To constrain dust properties in this region, we have performed radio observations toward this disk using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) in 2020 June-July, September, and November. We also performed complementary optical photometric monitoring observations. We found that the dust thermal emission from the hot inner disk mid-plane of FU Ori has been approximately stationary and the maximum dust grain size is $\gtrsim$1.6 mm in this region. If the hot inner disk of FU Ori which is inward of the 150-170 K water snowline is turbulent (e.g., corresponding to a Sunyaev & Shakura viscous $\alpha_{t}\gtrsim$0.1), or if the actual maximum grain size is still larger than the lower limit we presently constrain, then as suggested by the recent analytical calculations and the laboratory measurements, water-ice free dust grains may be stickier than water-ice coated dust grains in protoplanetary disks. Additionally, we find that the free-free emission and the Johnson B and V bands magnitudes of these binary stars are brightening in 2016-2020. The optical and radio variability might be related to the dynamically evolving protostellar or disk accretion activities. Our results highlight that hot inner disks of outbursting objects are important laboratories for testing models of dust grain growth. Deeply embedded protostars are actively fed from their surrounding envelopes through their protostellar disk. The physical structure of such early disks might be different from that of more evolved sources due to the active accretion. We present 1.3 and 3\,mm ALMA continuum observations at resolutions of 6.5\,au and 12\,au respectively, towards the Class 0 source IRAS 16293-2422 B. The resolved brightness temperatures appear remarkably high, with $T_{\rm b} >$ 100\,K within $\sim$30\,au and $T_{\rm b}$ peak over 400\,K at 3\,mm. Both wavelengths show a lopsided emission with a spectral index reaching values less than 2 in the central $\sim$ 20\,au region. We compare these observations with a series of radiative transfer calculations and synthetic observations of magnetohydrodynamic and radiation hydrodynamic protostellar disk models formed after the collapse of a dense core. Based on our results, we argue that the gas kinematics within the disk may play a more significant role in heating the disk than the protostellar radiation. In particular, our radiation hydrodynamic simulation of disk formation, including heating sources associated with gravitational instabilities, is able to generate the temperatures necessary to explain the high fluxes observed in IRAS 16293B. Besides, the low spectral index values are naturally reproduced by the high optical depth and high inner temperatures of the protostellar disk models. The high temperatures in IRAS 16293B imply that volatile species are mostly in the gas phase, suggesting that a self-gravitating disk could be at the origin of a hot corino., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures. We present the core mass function (CMF) of the massive star-forming clump G33.92+0.11 using 1.3 mm observations obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). With a resolution of 1000 au, this is one of the highest resolution CMF measurements to date. The CMF is corrected by flux and number incompleteness to obtain a sample that is complete for gas masses $M\gtrsim2.0\ M_\odot$. The resulting CMF is well represented by a power-law function ($dN/d\log M\propto M^\Gamma$), whose slope is determined using two different approaches: $i)$ by least-squares fitting of power-law functions to the flux- and number-corrected CMF, and $ii)$ by comparing the observed CMF to simulated samples with similar incompleteness. We provide a prescription to quantify and correct a flattening bias affecting the slope fits in the first approach, which is caused by small-sample or edge effects when the data is represented by either classical histograms or a kernel density estimate, respectively. The resulting slopes from both approaches are in good agreement each other, with $\Gamma=-1.11_{-0.11}^{+0.12}$ being our adopted value. Although this slope appears to be slightly flatter than the Salpeter slope $\Gamma=-1.35$ for the stellar initial mass function (IMF), we find from Monte Carlo simulations that the CMF in G33.92+0.11 is statistically indistinguishable from the Salpeter representation of the stellar IMF. Our results are consistent with the idea that the form of the IMF is inherited from the CMF, at least at high masses and when the latter is observed at high-enough resolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Pre-stellar cores represent the initial conditions of star formation. Although these initial conditions in nearby low-mass star-forming regions have been investigated in detail, such initial conditions remain vastly unexplored for massive star-forming regions. We report the detection of a cluster of low-mass starless and pre-stellar core candidates in a massive star protocluster forming cloud, NGC6334S. With the ALMA observations at a $\sim$0.02 pc spatial resolution, we identified 17 low-mass starless core candidates that do not show any evidence of protostellar activity. These candidates present small velocity dispersions, high fractional abundances of NH$_{2}$D, high NH$_{3}$ deuterium fractionations, and are completely dark in the infrared wavelengths from 3.6 up to 70~$\mu$m. Turbulence is significantly dissipated and the gas kinematics are dominated by thermal motions toward these candidates. Nine out of the 17 cores are gravitationally bound, and therefore are identified as pre-stellar core candidates. We report an analysis of the dust disk around DM~Tau, newly observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 1.3 mm. The ALMA observations with high sensitivity (8.4~$\mu$Jy/beam) and high angular resolution (35~mas, 5.1~au) detect two asymmetries on the ring at $r\sim$20~au. They could be two vortices in early evolution, the destruction of a large scale vortex, or double continuum emission peaks with different dust sizes. We also found millimeter emissions with $\sim$50~$\mu$Jy (a lower limit dust mass of 0.3~$M_{\rm Moon}$) inside the 3-au ring. To characterize these emissions, we modeled the spectral energy distribution (SED) of DM~Tau using a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. We found that an additional ring at $r=$ 1~au could explain both the DM~Tau SED and the central point source. The disk midplane temperature at the 1-au ring calculated in our modeling is less than the typical water sublimation temperature of 150~K, prompting the possibility of forming small icy planets there., Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 6 observations of dust continuum emission of the disk around WW Cha. The dust continuum image shows a smooth disk structure with a faint (low-contrast) dust ring, extending from $\sim 40$ au to $\sim 70$ au, not accompanied by any gap. We constructed the simple model to fit the visibility of the observed data by using MCMC method and found that the bump (we call the ring without the gap the bump) has two peaks at $40$ au and $70$ au. The residual map between the model and observation indicates asymmetric structures at the center and the outer region of the disk. These asymmetric structures are also confirmed by model-independent analysis of the imaginary part of the visibility. The asymmetric structure at the outer region is consistent with a spiral observed by SPHERE. To constrain physical quantities of the disk (dust density and temperature), we carried out radiative transfer simulations. We found that the midplane temperature around the outer peak is close to the freezeout temperature of CO on water ice ($\sim 30$ K). The temperature around the inner peak is about $50$ K, which is close to the freezeout temperature of H$_2$S and also close to the sintering temperature of several species. Massive star-forming regions exhibit an extremely rich and diverse chemistry, which in principle provides a wealth of molecular probes, as well as laboratories for interstellar prebiotic chemistry. Since the chemical structure of these sources displays substantial spatial variation among species on small scales (${\lesssim}10^4$ au), high angular resolution observations are needed to connect chemical structures to local environments and inform astrochemical models of massive star formation. To address this, we present ALMA 1.3 mm observations toward OB cluster-forming region G10.6-0.4 (hereafter "G10.6") at a resolution of 0.14$^{\prime\prime}$ (700 au). We find highly-structured emission from complex organic molecules (COMs) throughout the central 20,000 au, including two hot molecular cores and several shells or filaments. We present spatially-resolved rotational temperature and column density maps for a large sample of COMs and warm gas tracers. These maps reveal a range of gas substructure in both O- and N-bearing species. We identify several spatial correlations that can be explained by existing models of COM formation, including NH$_2$CHO/HNCO and CH$_3$OCHO/CH$_3$OCH$_3$, but also observe unexpected distributions and correlations which suggest that our current understanding of COM formation is far from complete. Importantly, complex chemistry is observed throughout G10.6, rather than being confined to hot cores. The COM composition appears to be different in the cores compared to the more extended structures, which illustrates the importance of high spatial resolution observations of molecular gas in elucidating the physical and chemical processes associated with massive star formation., Comment: 41 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Aims. Accretion and luminosity bursts triggered by three distinct mechanisms: the magnetorotational instability in the inner disk regions, clump infall in gravitationally fragmented disks and close encounters with an intruder star, were studied to determine the disk kinematic characteristics that can help to distinguish between these burst mechanisms. Methods. Numerical hydrodynamics simulations in the thin-disk limit were employed to model the bursts in disk environments that are expected for each burst mechanism. Results. We found that the circumstellar disks featuring accretion bursts can bear kinematic features that are distinct for different burst mechanisms, which can be useful when identifying the burst origin. The disks in the stellar encounter and clump-infall models are characterized by tens of percent deviations from the Keplerian rotation, whie the disks in the MRI models are characterized only a few percent deviation, which is mostly caused by the gravitational instability that fuels the MRI bursts. Velocity channel maps also show distinct kinks and wiggles, which are caused by gas disk flows that are peculiar to each considered burst mechanism. The deviations of velocity channels in the burst-hosting disks from a symmetric pattern typical of Keplerian disks are strongest for the clump-infall and collision models, and carry individual features that may be useful for the identification of the corresponding burst mechanism. The considered burst mechanisms produce a variety of light curves with the burst amplitudes varying in the \Delta m=2.5-3.7 limits, except for the clump-infall model where \Delta m can reach 5.4, although the derived numbers may be affected by a small sample and boundary conditions. Conclusions. Burst triggering mechanisms are associated with distinct kinematic features in the burst-hosting disks that may be used for their identification. Ring structures are observed by (sub-)millimeter dust continuum emission in various circumstellar disks from early stages of Class 0 and I to late stage of Class II young stellar objects (YSOs). In this paper, we study one of the possible scenarios of such ring formation in early stage, which is coagulation of dust aggregates. The dust grains grow in an inside-out manner because the growth timescale is roughly proportional to the orbital period. The boundary of the dust evolution can be regarded as the growth front, where the growth time is comparable to the disk age. With radiative transfer calculations based on the dust coagulation model, we find that the growth front can be observed as a ring structure because dust surface density is sharply changed at this position. Furthermore, we confirm that the observed ring positions in the YSOs with an age of $\lesssim1$ Myr are consistent with the growth front. The formation of filaments in molecular clouds is an important process in star formation. Hub-filament systems (HFSs) are a transition stage connecting parsec-scale filaments and proto-clusters. Understanding the origin of HFSs is crucial to reveal how star formation proceeds from clouds to cores. Here, we report JCMT POL-2 850 $\mu$m polarization and IRAM 30-m C$^{18}$O (2-1) line observations toward the massive HFS G33.92+0.11. The 850 $\mu$m continuum map reveals four major filaments converging to the center of G33.92+0.11 with numerous short filaments connecting to the major filaments at local intensity peaks. We estimate the local orientations of filaments, magnetic field, gravity, and velocity gradients from observations, and we examine their correlations based on their local properties. In the high-density areas, our analysis shows that the filaments tend to align with the magnetic field and local gravity. In the low-density areas, we find that the local velocity gradients tend to be perpendicular to both the magnetic field and local gravity, although the filaments still tend to align with local gravity. A global virial analysis suggests that the gravitational energy overall dominates the magnetic and kinematic energy. Combining local and global aspects, we conclude that the formation of G33.92+0.11 is predominantly driven by gravity, dragging and aligning the major filaments and magnetic field on the way to the inner dense center. Theoretical and numerical works indicate that a strong magnetic field should suppress fragmentation in dense cores. However, this has never been tested observationally in a relatively large sample of fragmenting massive dense cores. Here we use the polarization data obtained in the Submillimeter Array Legacy Survey of Zhang et al. to build a sample of 18 massive dense cores where both fragmentation and magnetic field properties are studied in a uniform way. We measured the fragmentation level, Nmm, within the field of view common to all regions, of 0.15 pc, with a mass sensitivity of about 0.5 Msun, and a spatial resolution of about 1000 au. In order to obtain the magnetic field strength using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we estimated the dispersion of the polarization position angles, the velocity dispersion of the H13CO+(4-3) gas, and the density of each core, all averaged within 0.15 pc. A strong correlation is found between Nmm and the average density of the parental core, although with significant scatter. When large-scale systematic motions are separated from the velocity dispersion and only the small-scale (turbulent) contribution is taken into account, a tentative correlation is found between Nmm and the mass-to-flux ratio, as suggested by numerical and theoretical works., Comment: accepted in ApJ

We have carried out polarization calibration for archival JVLA ($\sim$9 mm) full polarization observations towards the Class 0 young stellar object (YSO) OMC-3/MMS 6 (also known as HOPS-87), and then compared with the archival ALMA 1.2 mm observations. We found that the innermost $\sim$100 au region of OMC-3/MMS 6 is likely very optically thick (e.g., $\tau\gg$1) at $\sim$1 mm wavelength such that the dominant polarization mechanism is dichroic extinction. It is marginally optically thin (e.g., $\tau\lesssim$1) at $\sim$9 mm wavelength such that the JVLA observations can directly probe the linearly polarized emission from non-spherical dust. Assuming that the projected long axis of dust grains is aligned perpendicular to magnetic field (B-field) lines, we propose that the overall B-field topology resembles an hourglass shape, while this "hourglass" appears $\sim$40$^{\circ}$ inclined with respect to the previously reported outflow axis. The geometry of this system is consistent with a magnetically regulated dense (pseudo-)disk. Based on the observed 29.45 GHz flux density and assuming a dust absorption opacity $\kappa^{abs}_{29.45\,GHz}=$0.0096 cm$^{2} $g$^{-1}$, the derived overall dust mass within a $\sim$43 au radius is $\sim$14000 $M_{\oplus}$. From this case study, it appears to us that some previous 9 mm surveys towards Class 0/I YSOs might have systematically underestimated dust masses by one order of magnitude, owing to that they assumed the too high dust absorption opacity ($\sim$0.1 cm$^{2}$ g$^{-1}$) for $\sim$9 mm wavelengths but without self-consistently considering the dust scattering opacity.

Aims: Response of a protoplanetary disk to luminosity bursts of various duration is studied with the purpose to determine the effect of the bursts on the strength and sustainability of gravitational instability in the disk. A special emphasis is paid to the spatial distribution of gas and grown dust (from 1 mm to a few cm) during and after the burst. Methods: Numerical hydrodynamics simulations using the FEOSAD code were employed to study the dynamics of gas and dust in the thin-disk limit. Dust-to-gas friction including back reaction and dust growth were also considered. Bursts of various duration (from 100 to 500 yr) were initiated in accordance with a thermally ignited magnetorotational instability. Luminosity curves for constant- and declining-magnitude bursts were adopted to represent two typical limiting cases for FU-Orionis-type eruptions. Results: The short-term effect of the burst is to reduce the strength of gravitational instability by heating and expanding the disk. The longest bursts with duration comparable to the revolution period of the spiral can completely dissolve the original two-armed spiral pattern in the gas disk by the end of the burst, while the shortest bursts only weaken the spiral pattern. The reaction of grown dust to the burst is somewhat different. The spiral-like initial distribution with deep cavities in the inter-armed regions transforms into a ring-like distribution with deep gaps. This transformation is most expressed for the longest-duration bursts. The long-term effect of the burst depends on the initial disk conditions at the onset of the burst.
