Abstract Chemotherapy is one of the conventional treatments for cancer in clinical practice. However, poor delivery efficiency, systemic toxicity, and the lack of pharmacokinetic monitoring during treatment are the critical limitations of current chemotherapy. Herein, we reported a brand-new antitumor drug delivery strategy that harnesses an optical fiber endoscopically therapeutic probe. The fiber probe carries photosensitizers in the fiber core and antitumor agents on the fiber surface mediated by a temperature-responsive hydrogel film, giving rise to an activable photothermal-chemotherapy that orchestrates the localized hyperthermia and thermal-stimuli drug release to the tumor lesion. Furthermore, the dynamical drug release and in-situ temperature can be real-time supervised through the built-in fiber sensors, including the reflective Mach–Zehnder interferometer and fiber Bragg grating, to visualize the therapy process and thus improve the safety of treatment. Compared with conventional methods, the fiber-optic drug delivery can adequately take advantage of the chemotherapeutics through collaboratively recruiting the photoheating-mediated enhanced permeability and the hydrogel particle-assisted high drug retention, shedding new light on a “central-to-peripheral” drug pervasion and retention mechanism to destroy tumors completely. The fiber-optic chemotherapy strategy incorporates precise drug delivery, accurate controllability of drug release, high drug permeability and retention in tumor, low off-target rate, and real-time drug release and temperature feedback, performing a straightforward and precise photothermal-chemotherapy pathway. More than that, the proposed strategy holds tremendous promise to provide a revolutionized on-demand drug delivery platform for the highly efficient evaluation and screening of antitumor pharmaceuticals.

Abstract Cancer has been one of the most serious diseases, resulting in more than 10 million deaths every year. Fiber-optic sensors have great potential for diagnosing and treating cancer due to their flexibility, precise positioning, real-time monitoring, and minimally invasive characteristics. Compared to traditional central laboratory examination, fiber-optic biosensors can provide high sensitivity, miniaturization, and versatility, which feature the point-of-care diagnostic capability. Herein, we focus on recent advances in fiber-optic biosensors for cancer theranostics. It is primarily concerned with advancements in the design of various fiber sensing approaches, fiber cancer sensing, and therapy sensors. With fiber-optic biosensors, cancer marker detection, cancerous cell differentiation, ex vivo tumor model validation, and in vivo tumor detection can be achieved. And the medical fiber also can be used to provide photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, and combination therapy for solid tumors. Additionally, cancer sensing and therapy can be integrated into the fiber, which demonstrates the multiplexing capabilities of fiber-optic biosensors. Lastly, we systematically summarize the fiber biosensor applications from in vitro to in vivo, and conclude with the challenges in development and prospects.

Abstract Operando decoding of the key parameters of photo‐electric catalysis provides reliable information for catalytic effect evaluation and catalytic mechanism exploration. However, to capture the details of surface‐localized and rapid chemical and thermal events at the nanoscale in real‐time is highly challenging. A promising approach based on a lab‐around‐microfiber sensor capable of simulating photo‐electric catalytic reactions on the surface of optical fibers as well as monitoring reactant concentration changes and catalytic heat generation processes is demonstrated. Due to the penetration depth of submicron size and the fast response ability of the evanescent field, the lab‐around‐microfiber sensor overcame the difficulty of reading instantaneous surface parameters in the submicron range. This sensor operando dismantled the changes in reactant concentration and temperature on the catalyst surface induced by light and voltage, respectively. It also decoded the impact of catalyst composition on the adsorption efficiency and catalytic efficiency across various wavelengths and determined the synchronized occurrence of pollutant degradation and catalytic thermal effects. Stable correlations between the real‐time parameters and catalytic activities are obtained, helping to provide a basic understanding of the catalytic process and mechanism. This approach fills an important gap in the current monitoring methods of catalytic processes and heat production.

Abstract We report the development of a head-mounted photoacoustic fiberscope for cerebral imaging in a freely behaving mouse. The 4.5-gram imaging probe has a 9-µm lateral resolution and 0.2-Hz frame rate over a 1.2-mm wide area. The probe can continuously monitor cerebral oxygenation and hemodynamic responses at single-vessel resolution, showing significantly different cerebrovascular responses to external stimuli under anesthesia and in the freely moving state. For example, when subjected to high-concentration CO2 respiration, enhanced oxygenation to compensate for hypercapnia can be visualized due to cerebral regulation in the freely moving state. Comparative studies exhibit significantly weakened compensation capabilities in obese rodents. This new imaging modality can be used for investigating both normal and pathological cerebrovascular functions and shows great promise for studying cerebral activity, disorders and their treatments.

Breast cancer often necessitates surgical interventions such as breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy. In these surgeries, sentinel lymph node (SLN) samples are often excised for histopathological examination to ascertain the presence of cancer metastasis. Despite its importance, traditional hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, considerably prolongs the operation because of its complex processing requirements. Ultraviolet photoacoustic microscopy (UV-PAM) has emerged as a solution for bypassing the necessity of tissue staining or sectioning. However, its clinical application has been hindered by imaging speed. To overcome this challenge, we have developed a fast-scanning, reflection-mode UV-PAM designed for histopathology without staining based on high-sensitivity, wide-vision optical ultrasound detection. A specimen area of around 12 mm2 can be scanned in 8 min with a lateral resolution of 1.5 μm. To enhance imaging speed, multi-focal PAM was implemented, resulting in a fourfold acceleration. This PAM technique has been utilized in SLN biopsy to differentiate cancerous tissue in breast cancer patients.

Abstract Synthetic dimension opens new horizons in quantum physics and topological photonics by enabling new dimensions for field and particle manipulations. The most appealing property of the photonic synthetic dimension is its ability to emulate high-dimensional optical behavior in a unitary physical system. Here we show that the photonic synthetic dimension can transform technical problems in photonic systems between dimensionalities, providing unexpected solutions to technical problems that are otherwise challenging. Specifically, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a fully reconfigurable photonic Galton board (PGB) in the temporal synthetic dimension, in which the temporal high-speed challenge is translated into a spatial fiber-optic length matching problem, leading to the generation of tera-sample-per-second arbitrary waveforms with ultimate flexibility. In the experiments, an arbitrary waveform with a widely tunable sampling rate, ranging from 10.42 GSa/s to a record high of 1.64 TSa/s, is demonstrated. The concept of dimension conversion offers possible solutions to various physical dimension-related problems, such as super-resolution imaging, high-resolution spectroscopy, and high-precision time measurement.

Abstract Oxyfluoride transparent glass‐ceramics (GC) are widely used as the matrix for rare‐earth (RE) ions due to their unique properties such as low phonon energy, high transmittance, and high solubility for RE ions. Tb3+ doped oxyfluoride glasses exhibit a large absorption cross section for ultraviolet (UV) excitation, high stability, high photoluminescence quantum efficiency, and sensitive spectral conversion characteristics, making them promising candidate materials for use as the spectral converter in UV photodetectors. Herein, a Tb3+ doped oxyfluoride GC is developed by using the melt‐quenching method, and the microstructure and optical properties of the GC sample are carefully investigated. By combining with a Si‐based photo‐resistor,a solar‐blind UV detector is fabricated, which exhibits a significant photoelectric response with a broad detection range from 188 to 400 nm. The results indicate that the designed UV photodetector is of great significance for the development of solar‐blind UV detectors.

This article presents the distinctive butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) fluorescent probe P5, designed via a targeting-site method. This method was proposed to enhance the affinity of the probe for BChE by targeting the peripheral anionic site (PAS) of BChE. By mimicking the natural substrate butyrylcholine, the structure of the probe was optimized by introducing a positive charge. Fluorescent probe P5, selected from a series of designed fluorescent probes P1–P6, exhibited excellent affinity and specificity towards BChE, enabling rapid detection within 5 min with a low detection limit of 16.7 ng/mL. Furthermore, this probe can distinguish between normal cells and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) model cells, and demonstrated good imaging results in a P12 cell AD model. The results of this study indicate that this novel fluorescent probe could serve as a promising tool for the rapid detection of BChE and accurate AD diagnosis.

The authors developed an optical-fiber-based photoacoustic endoscope for gastroenterology. It can noninvasively view the internal vascular structures and visualize the hemodynamic response in a lesion.

With the recent advances in nanomaterials, photothermal therapies (PTT) enabled by deep-tissue penetration with novel nanoagents have offered a new hope for treating cancers. Nevertheless, PTT applications in conventional approaches remain translationally restricted due to their non-specificity and collateral pro-inflammatory effects during implementation. To address these drawbacks, we here report Lipo-PTO as the prototype of a new class of liposome-functionalized photothermal theragnostic agents, which can eradicate cancer cells in vivo with high selectivity. Lipo-PTO is activated by low pH and superoxide (O2•–) to specifically deliver and convert preloaded cyanine molecules to release Cy-NH in the tumour microenvironments, eventually enabling the activation of photothermal properties to induce tumour ablation. In further studies on Lipo-PTO for treating breast cancer (BC) in mouse models, Lipo-PTO usage was characterized by a high degree of biocompatibility, optimal retention time pharmacokinetics and tumour regression with minimal collateral damages. This study here thus illustrates an innovative strategy to target intrinsic attributes of tumour microenvironments for improved therapeutic precision and efficacy in PTT applications.

Glass ceramics (GCs) containing PbS quantum dots (QDs) are prepared for temperature sensing. Broadband emissions are detected in the GCs when PbS QDs are precipitated from the glasses, and emissions centers are modulated from 1250 nm to 1960 nm via heat treatments. The emission centers of GCs exhibit blue-shifts when environment temperatures increase from room temperature to 210 °C. Importantly, the shift values of emission centers increase linearly with the test temperature, which is beneficial for applications in temperature sensing. A temperature sensor based on PbS QDs GC is heat-treated at 500 °C for 10 h, possesses the highest sensitivity of 0.378 nm/°C, and exhibits excellent stability and repeatability at high temperatures (up to 210 °C). Moreover, GC fibers are fabricated by using the GCs as the fiber core. The sensitivity of the temperature-sensing sensor of the GC fibers is also demonstrated and the sensitivity is as high as 0.558 nm/°C. The designed PbS QDs GCs provide a significant materials base for the manufacturing of fluorescent temperature sensors and the GC fibers offer significant opportunities for temperature detection in complex, integrated and compact devices.

Optical fiber acoustic sensors with miniature size and high sensitivity are attractive to develop compact photoacoustic spectroscopy. Here, a compact photoacoustic gas sensor was demonstrated by utilizing a diaphragm-based fiber-optic Fabry-Perot cavity as both the acoustic sensor and the multipass cell. A nanoscale graphite film was used as the flexible diaphragm to increase the acoustic sensitivity of the Fabry-Perot cavity and the cavity inner surface was coated with highly-reflective Au film to form a multipass cell for amplification of the photoacoustic signal. With a laser power of 20 mW at 1532.8 nm, the sensor demonstrated a low detection limit of ∼ 50 ppb for C2H2 gas with an integration time of ∼ 100 s. The optical fiber photoacoustic gas sensor with a millimeter-scale diameter and ppb-level detection limit is promising for trace gas sensing in various areas including industrial process and environmental monitoring.

Plasmonic sensors leverage the enhanced near-fields associated with the constituent optical nanoantennas to achieve better sensing performance. The design and fabrication of these optical nanoantennas, especially metallic ones, are thus becoming critical steps to advance this thriving and important field. Low-cost and high-throughput nanofabrication techniques are greatly desirable. In this work, we demonstrate a cost-effective nanofabrication method derived from conventional colloidal lithography. With polystyrene nanospheres and subsequently formed copper (Cu) nanoholes as consecutive deposition masks, disk nanoantennas can be produced in a large-scale fashion with no dry etching required. Furthermore, the nanodisks can be readily tuned via thermal heating of the sacrificial Cu nanohole layers. Finally, we combined the fabricated Au nanodisks with the metal-organic framework material zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 and demonstrated highly sensitive detection of volatile organic compounds. We believe that this nanofabrication method could be readily implemented in a variety of plasmonic sensors.

Photoacoustic tomography emerged as a promising tool for noninvasive biomedical imaging and diseases diagnosis. However, most of the current piezoelectric ultrasound transducers suffer optical opacity and tissue-mismatched acoustic impedance, hindering the miniaturization and integration of the system for multiscale and multimodal imaging. Here, a transparent polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) encapsulated optical microfiber ultrasound sensor was demonstrated for photoacoustic imaging with scalable spatial resolution and penetration depth. The sensor comprised a microfiber loop sandwiched by a pair of in-line Bragg gratings, which formed an ultrasound-sensitive Fabry-Perot cavity allowing free delivery of ultrasound/light beams and unique needle-shaped ultrasound focusing along the penetration depth. The sensor with a detection limit of ∼ 700 Pa and a bandwidth of ∼ 10 MHz was applied for multiscale photoacoustic imaging of mouse ear and brain vasculatures. With advantages of flexibility, optical transparence and focusing capability, the sensor offers new opportunities for developing photoacoustic/ultrasound imaging devices for biomedical and clinic applications.

The optical generation of pulsed ultrasound is attractive to nondestructive testing and biological imaging, especially for those involving narrow operation space or strong electro-magnetic interference. However, conventional techniques based on the photoacoustic effect inevitably required an expensive high-energy short pulsed laser and dedicated preparation of the optically absorptive composite film. Here, a fiber-optic ultrasound pulse transmitter based on continuous-wave (CW) laser triggered thermo-cavitation was demonstrated. The fiber-delivered CW laser light heated the highly-absorptive copper nitrate solution and generated explosive bubbles , which emitted strong ultrasound waves. Omnidirectional ultrasound pulses with an amplitude up to 0.3 MPa and a repetition rate of 5 kHz in the frequency range of 5–12 MHz were obtained by using a 50 mW optical heating power at a wavelength of 980 nm. The fiber-tip ultrasound transmitter was integrated with a polymer-cavity-based fiber ultrasound detector to construct an all-fiber ultrasound endoscopic imaging probe. Without the need for a wavelength-tunable laser, the ultrasound detector was interrogated by CW laser light with a fixed wavelength, coupled with feedback-controlled heating of the cavity to stabilize its spectral fringe. The CW laser-driven fiber ultrasound transmitter, in combination with the photothermally stabilized fiber ultrasound detector, opens new routes for a number of ultrasound-related industrial and biomedical applications.

Abstract A microwave photonic frequency divider to produce a frequency‐divided microwave signal with its frequency that is one‐third the frequency of the input microwave signal is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The key novelty of the approach is that the phase control, a condition to realise the frequency division operation, is implemented through controlling the modulator bias voltage, enabling a wideband, high resolution and fast response phase control. One‐third frequency division with an ultra‐high harmonic suppression of over 71.5 dB is demonstrated for the first time.

Hydrogen (H2) sensors are critical to various applications such as the situation where H2 is used as the clean energy for industry or the indicator for human disease diagnosis. Palladium (Pd) is widely used as the hydrogen sensing material in different types of sensors. Optical fiber H2 sensors are particularly promising due to their compactness and spark-free operation. Here, we report a Fabry–Pérot (FP)-cavity-based H2 sensor that is formed with a freestanding Pd membrane and integrated on a conventional single-mode optical fiber end. The freestanding Pd membrane acts both as the active hydrogen sensing material and as one of the reflective mirrors of the cavity. When the Pd film absorbs H2 to form PdHx, it will be stretched, resulting in a change of the cavity length and thus a shift of the interference spectrum. The H2 concentration can be derived from the amplitude of the wavelength shift. Experimental results showed that H2 sensors based on suspended Pd membranes can achieve a detection sensitivity of about 3.6 pm/ppm and a detection limit of about 3.3 ppm. This highly sensitive detection scheme is expected to find applications for sensing low-concentration H2.

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is a noninvasive biomedical imaging technology capable of multiscale imaging of biological samples from organs down to cells. Multiscale PAI requires different ultrasound transducers that are flat or focused because the current widely-used piezoelectric transducers are rigid and lack the flexibility to tune their spatial ultrasound responses. Inspired by the rapidly-developing flexible photonics, we exploited the inherent flexibility and low-loss features of optical fibers to develop a flexible fiber-laser ultrasound sensor (FUS) for multiscale PAI. By simply bending the fiber laser from straight to curved geometry, the spatial ultrasound response of the FUS can be tuned for both wide-view optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy at optical diffraction-limited depth (~1 mm) and photoacoustic computed tomography at optical dissipation-limited depth of several centimeters. A radio-frequency demodulation was employed to get the readout of the beat frequency variation of two orthogonal polarization modes in the FUS output, which ensures low-noise and stable ultrasound detection. Compared to traditional piezoelectrical transducers with fixed ultrasound responses once manufactured, the flexible FUS provides the freedom to design multiscale PAI modalities including wearable microscope, intravascular endoscopy, and portable tomography system, which is attractive to fundamental biological/medical studies and clinical applications.

Optoacoustic sensing applications are limited by weak electrostrictive force. Here, the authors induce photothermally acoustic vibrations with a focused pulsed laser, and via scanning demonstrate sensing of acoustic impedance at 10 µm spatial resolution, allowing for visualisation of diffusion dynamics.

Abstract In this study, a virtual-point concept was introduced into fiber-laser photoacoustic tomography to improve the elevational image resolution. The flexible fiber laser was bent into an arc shape to conform to the ultrasound wavefront, which formed an ultrasound focus at the center of the arc. The synthetic aperture focusing technique was utilized to reconstruct the images; as a result, the elevational resolution particularly within the out-of-focus region was considerably improved compared to the resolution of an image retrieved by multiplexing the PA time-resolved signals with sound velocity. The all-optical fiber-laser photoacoustic tomography system with a high spatial resolution has potential for various applications, including biomedical research and preclinical/clinical diagnosis.

The authors demonstrate fidelity colour prints and binocular stereoscopic images in multilayer MoS2 integrated on an Au substrate, showing nanometric layer sensitivity in the Fabry-Perot resonance changed by a facile laser recipe.

Optical magnetization: extreme limits for magnetic data recording with light The potential for combining the speed of photonics with the advantages of magnetic data storage, using pulsed laser light to control the magnetization of alloys of gadolinium, iron and cobalt (GdFeCo), has been explored and quantified. Achieving ultrafast and energy-efficient optical control of magnetism could revolutionize information-processing technology. Researchers led by Xiangping Li at Jinan University in China and Alexey V. Kimel at Radboud University in The Netherlands have experimentally determined the fastest possible rate of the optical reversal of magnetization achieved by this promising new technology. They suggest data switching repetition rates of up to three billion cycles per second (3 GHz) are feasible. They also propose a method to achieve spatial resolution of data recording at scales below light’s ‘diffraction limit’, which is generally believed to restrict the attainable resolution.

Here the authors report binary phase supercritical lenses by patterning monolayer TMD materials. Through placement of atomic thin 2D TMD with sufficient absorption, a spot of critical coupling is created to facilitate a π phase jump and subdiffraction focusing over bandwidth of 150 nm in visible range.

We demonstrate a microfiber Bragg grating as the reflective refractometer with the function of self-photoheating. The rare earth-doped fiber provides not only the photosensitivity to the UV modulation but also the effective pump laser absorption and photoheating conversion. The rare earth-doped microfiber Bragg grating, which is cladding-removed by the hydrofluoric acid, can detect the tiny refractive index change with a resolution of 10−4 RIU scale. The self-photoheating could be realized by 980 nm pump absorption and non-radiative transition process of the ytterbium and erbium ions, which are well-preserved by the core structure after etching. Monitored by the reflective grating signal, the photoheating can manipulate 30 °C increase of the device in the air, 8 °C in the ethanol, and 4 °C in the water. The second time-scale heating/cooling response allows the sensor to act as ad optical switch for engineering temperature. The work may open a new route for accelerative biosensing and pollutant determination and treatment.

Abstract The control of polarization, an essential property of light, is of broad scientific and technological interest. Polarizers are indispensable optical elements for direct polarization generation. However, arbitrary polarization generation, except that of common linear and circular polarization, relies heavily on bulky optical components such as cascading linear polarizers and waveplates. Here, we present an effective strategy for designing all-in-one full Poincaré sphere polarizers based on perfect arbitrary polarization conversion dichroism and implement it in a monolayer all-dielectric metasurface. This strategy allows preferential transmission and conversion of one polarization state located at an arbitrary position on the Poincaré sphere to its handedness-flipped state while completely blocking its orthogonal state. In contrast to previous methods that were limited to only linear or circular polarization, our method manifests perfect dichroism of nearly 100% in theory and greater than 90% experimentally for arbitrary polarization states. By leveraging this attractive dichroism, our demonstration of the generation of polarization beams located at an arbitrary position on a Poincaré sphere directly from unpolarized light can substantially extend the scope of meta-optics and dramatically promote state-of-the-art nanophotonic devices.

Here, the authors report large photothermal nonlinearity mediated by anapole states within subwavelength Si nanodisks, offering a mechanism for dynamic tuning of far-field radiation from multipolar modes. Nonlinear scattering is used to demonstrate the potential for far-field optical localization of Si nanostructures.

Abstract A compact fiber-optic magnetic field sensor is proposed by packaging an orthogonal dual-frequency fiber grating laser and a copper wire with alternating electrical current together inside epoxy resin. The alternating current generates Ampere force in a magnetic field, which changes the birefringence of the fiber laser and hence tunes the frequency of the beat signal after photodetection. The magnetic field magnitude can then be detected by measuring the frequency change of the beat signal. The sensitivity of the sensor can be tuned with a maximum response of 35.21 kHz/kGs demonstrated. Moreover, the sensor shows good immunity to environment interference.

Most conventional PT-symmetric systems contain two physically separated modes. Here the authors proposed a PT-symmetric microwave optoelectronic oscillator, where the gain and loss modes are confined in a single spatial resonator, resulting in an increased structural simplicity, and long-term stability.

Abstract Photonics has spurred a myriad of diagnostic and therapeutic applications for defeating cancer owing to its superiority in spatiotemporal maneuverability and minimal harm. The limits of light penetration depth and elusiveness of photosensitizer utilization, however, impede the implementation of the photodiagnostic and ‐therapy for determining and annihilating the deep‐situated tumor. Herein, a promising strategy that harnesses functional optical fibers is developed and demonstrated to realize an in vivo endoscopic cancer sensing and therapy ensemble. Tumor detection is investigated using hypoxia‐sensitive fluorescent fibers to realize fast and accurate tumor recognition and diagnosis. The tumor treatment is further performed by exploiting the endogenous photothermal effect of rare‐earth‐doped optical fibers. The eradication of orthotopic and subcutaneous xenografts significantly validates the availability of tumoricidal fibers. The strategy opens horizons to inspire the design of optical fiber‐mediated “plug and play” precise tumor theranostics with high safety, which may intrigue broader fields, such as fiber optics, materials, chemistry, medicine, and clinics.

Peroxynitrite (ONOO−) is a highly reactive nitrogen species (RNS) that is closely associated with many physiological and pathological processes. In this study, we construct a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe, NAF-BN, that utilizes benzyl boronic acid ester for fluorescence quenching of naphthofluorescein cores. NAF-BN has been thoroughly evaluated for reliable imaging of exogenous ONOO− in living cells. Further, NAF-BN can be applied effectively to visualize ONOO− in Drosophila brains, confirming the hypothesis that neonicotinoid pesticides increase neurological damage and oxidative stress. The probe NAF-BN offers exciting potential to reveal the role of ONOO− in various biological and medical fields.

Reliable gas sensors are very important for hydrogen (H2) gas detection and storage. Detection methods based on palladium (Pd) metal are cost-effective and widely studied. When Pd is exposed to H2, it turns into palladium hydride with modified optical properties, which thus can be monitored for H2 sensing. Here, we fabricated large-area Pd nanostructures, including Pd nanotriangles and nanohole arrays, using colloidal lithography and systematically studied their H2-sensing performance. After hydrogen absorption, both the Pd nanoholes and nanotriangles showed clear transmittance changes in the visible–near infrared range, consistent with numerical simulation results. The influences of the structural parameters (period of the array P and diameter of the nanohole D) of the two structures are further studied, as different structural parameters can affect the hydrogen detection effect of the two structures. The nanohole arrays exhibited bigger transmittance changes than the nanotriangle arrays.

We investigate the two-photon fluorescence (TPF) of conjugated polymer (CP) microspheres with diameters up to tens of micrometers. Two polymers, emitting in either the violet or red, were first synthesized and characterized in terms of their one-photon fluorescence and three-dimensional internal microstructure. Under femtosecond infrared excitation, both types of microspheres showed a strong TPF, which was investigated by the excitation intensity dependence, emission spectroscopy, time-resolved luminescence, and photobleaching dynamics. While the violet-fluorescent microspheres performed similarly compared to dye-doped polystyrene counterparts emitting at a similar wavelength, the red-fluorescent microspheres showed a two-orders-of-magnitude stronger TPF. This excellent performance is attributed to enhanced hyperpolarizability associated with intermolecular interactions in the polymer solid, indicating a route toward designed CP microspheres that could outperform currently-available microparticles for sensing or imaging applications involving two-photon fluorescence.

Abstract Auto-regressive (AR) spectral estimation technology is proposed to analyze the Brillouin scattering spectrum in Brillouin optical time-domain refelectometry. It shows that AR based method can reliably estimate the Brillouin frequency shift with an accuracy much better than fast Fourier transform (FFT) based methods provided the data length is not too short. It enables about 3 times improvement over FFT at a moderate spatial resolution.

A new microwave hybrid coupler that solves the problems of limited bandwidth and reconfigurability in conventional couplers, is presented. It is based on a bi-directional operating optical phase modulator and an optical signal processor to control the amplitude and phase of the phase modulated optical signals. The use of photonic technology enables the realization of a microwave hybrid coupler with wide coupling ratio and phase tuning ranges. The photonics-based microwave hybrid coupler also has a wide bandwidth, and a small amplitude and phase imbalance. Experimental results demonstrate that the microwave hybrid coupler exhibits 3 to 20 dB coupling ratio tuning and 0° to 360° phase tuning over a 3-dB operating frequency from 6 to 16 GHz.

We observe the spectral hole burning effect in a polarization maintain fiber (PMF) and a single-mode fiber (SMF) through the interaction between a continuous wave (CW) beam and a high power pulse with two frequency components located around the Stokes and anti-Stokes frequencies of the CW beam. The linewidth of the spectral burning hole is much narrower than that of the intrinsic Brillouin gain spectrum. We experimentally study the position dependent dip formation process in a PMF and an SMF, and explore the possibility of using this narrowed spectral width for distributed temperature and strain sensing with a higher accuracy. A hole burning peak with a linewidth of 9 MHz in a Brillouin gain spectrum with a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 50 MHz is observed in a PMF. Since the frequency measurement accuracy of Brillouin sensor is inversely proportional to the FWHM of detected spectrum, the spectrum hole burning represents a potential for improving the Brillouin peak detection accuracy of distributed Brillouin sensor.

A new dual-function photonic microwave signal processing structure that has the ability to realize both frequency up/down conversion and RF/IF phase shifting, is presented. In the proposed signal processor, a dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach Zehnder modulator (DP-DPMZM) is used to generate an orthogonally polarized single RF/IF signal and local oscillator (LO) modulation sideband without an optical carrier. The optical phase difference between the two sidebands can be controlled by controlling a DC voltage applied to a LiNbO3 electro-optic phase modulator that is connected after the DP-DPMZM. Beating between the two sidebands at a photodetector generates an RF/IF signal with a phase equal to the optical phase difference between the IF/RF signal and LO sidebands. The dual-function photonic microwave signal processor has a wide bandwidth and does not require a precise control of the laser wavelength. Experimental results demonstrate that a flat >-3 dB down/up conversion efficiency is achieved for an RF signal from 3.5 to 26.5 GHz and for an IF signal from 0.5 to 3 GHz, and a full 360° continuous phase shift of the output IF/RF signal.

Abstract A dual-frequency distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser based sensor is demonstrated for low-frequency vibration measurement through the Doppler effect. The response of the proposed sensor is quite linear and is much higher than that of a conventional accelerometer. The proposed sensor can work down to 1 Hz with high sensitivity. Therefore, the proposed sensor is very efficient in low-frequency vibration measurement.

Transparent glass-ceramic composites embedded with Ln-fluoride nanocrystals are prepared in this work to enhance the upconversion luminescence of Tm3+. The crystalline phases, microstructures, and photoluminescence properties of samples are carefully investigated. KYb3F10 nanocrystals are proved to controllably precipitate in the glass-ceramics via the inducing of Yb3+ when the doping concentration varies from 0.5 to 1.5 mol%. Pure near-infrared upconversion emissions are observed and the emission intensities are enhanced in the glass-ceramics as compared to in the precursor glass due to the incorporation of Tm3+ into the KYb3F10 crystal structures via substitutions for Yb3+. Furthermore, KYb2F7 crystals are also nano-crystallized in the glass-ceramics when the Yb3+ concentration exceeds 2.0 mol%. The upconversion emission intensity of Tm3+ is further enhanced by seven times as Tm3+ enters the lattice sites of pure KYb2F7 nanocrystals. The designed glass ceramics provide efficient gain materials for optical applications in the biological transmission window. Moreover, the controllable nano-crystallization strategy induced by Yb3+ opens a new way for engineering a wide range of functional nanomaterials with effective incorporation of Ln3+ ions into fluoride crystal structures.

A gas pressure sensor based on Brillouin scattering in a microscaled fiber is experimentally demonstrated. The microscaled fiber with a diameter of 1.9 μm is drawn from a commercial single-mode fiber. A Brillouin spectrum with multipeak structure is observed due to the coupling between longitudinal and shear acoustic wave caused by strong acoustic index contrast between glass and air. The proposed pressure sensor is based on the fact that the Brillouin peak frequency at ~8.5 GHz and ~9 GHz shifts when environment air pressure changes. It exhibits a pressure sensitivity of approximately 0.066 MHz/kPa. This device provides a candidate for gas pressure measurement. We also measure the temperature response of the spectra. It is found that the temperature coefficient is about two times higher than that of the SMF. This phenomenon exhibits potential for simultaneous temperature and pressure sensor.

A wideband microwave photonic phase shifter implemented based on a special dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM) consisting of two sub-MZMs and a polarization rotator is proposed and demonstrated. A microwave signal to be phase shifted is applied to the two sub-MZMs, via a 90° hybrid coupler, to generate two orthogonally polarized intensity-modulated optical signals, which are combined at a polarization beam combiner. A phase-shifted microwave signal is obtained by detecting the combined signal at a photodetector. The tuning of the phase shift is realized by tuning the DC bias voltages applied to the sub-MZMs. Since the phase shift tuning has been done electrically, high speed phase tuning can be implemented. The proposed phase shifter is experimentally demonstrated. A continuous phase tuning from 0° to 360° with small magnitude variations of less than ±1 dB and phase ripple standard deviation of less than 2.7° in a decade bandwidth from 2.5 to 25 GHz is realized. The system insertion loss is measured to be 10.8 dB. Investigation on the cause of magnitude and phase deviations is also performed by simulations, which are confirmed by experimental measurements.

Fibre sensors are key to many minimally-invasive detection techniques but, owing to an index mismatch, they are often limited to aqueous environments. Here, Caucheteur et al. develop a high-resolution fibre gas sensor with a tilted in-fibre grating that allows coupling to higher-order plasmon modes.

Fiber optical refractometers have gained a substantial reputation in biological and chemical sensing domain regarding their label-free and remote-operation working mode. However, the practical breakthrough of the fiber optical bio/chemosensor is impeded by a lack of reconfigurability as well as the explicitness of the determination between bulk and surface refractive indices. In this letter, we further implement the highly flexible and reproducible long period grating called “VIOLIN” in chemical sensing area for the demonstration of moving those obstacles. In this configuration, the liquid is not only leveraged as the chemical carrier but also the periodic modulation of the optical fiber to facilitate the resonant signal. The thiol compound that is adsorbed by the fluidic substrate can be transduced to the pure alteration of the bulk refractive index of the liquid, which can be sensitively perceived by the resonant drift. Taking advantage of its freely dismantled feature, the VIOLIN sensor enables flexible reproduction and high throughput detection, yielding a new vision to the fiber optic biochemical sensing field.

Microwave photonic frequency conversion, with flexible tunability and a simple structure based on a wavelength swept laser (WSL), is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed frequency conversion system, a broadband WSL was used to generate a frequency-chirped optical carrier, which was sent to a Mach Zehnder modulator (MZM). A microwave signal, with its frequency to be converted, was applied to the MZM. The modulated signal was then sent to a dispersive device, where the waveform was compressed or expanded depending on the dispersion of the dispersive device. After photodetection, a frequency up-converted or down-converted microwave signal was generated. The tuning of the conversion frequency was achieved by adjusting the chirp rate of the optical carrier from the WSL or the dispersion of the dispersive device. The proposed approach was experimentally demonstrated. A microwave signal, with its frequency at 5 GHz, was up-converted to 5.577 GHz and down-converted to 4.936 GHz. The quality of the frequency converted microwave signal was also evaluated. The conversion performance could be further improved by introducing a WSL with a high duty cycle.

A single taper-based fiber modal interferometer with magnetic fluid integrated, which can have responses of dip wavelength and extinction ratio on the external magnetic field and temperature changes, is demonstrated. Within the magnetic field range from 50 to 100 Oe, the measured sensitivities are 88 pm/Oe and -0.1419 dB/Oe for dip wavelength and extinction ratio, respectively, and within the temperature range from 30 to 80 °C, the sensitivities are -282.67 pm/°C and -0.0528 dB/°C for dip wavelength and extinction ratio, respectively. A full analysis to the sensing mechanism is given and experimental results can verify the concepts of the device. The presented structure is featured with simplification, easy fabrication, and high sensitivity and should have potential applications in simultaneous magnetic field and temperature measurements.

We report on the implementation of fiber taper interferometric hydrogen sensors with high sensitivity and good reproducibility. The tapering process is carried out with a commercial fusion splicer by precisely controlling the pulling and feeding velocities, as well as arc strength. The taper can naturally act as a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and intrinsically offers a transmission spectrum with periodic interference fringes. The sensor with a waist diameter of 3.0 μm can present a spectral shift up to -1.99 nm when injecting hydrogen with a concentration of 5% as a result of strong evanescent field interaction with the Palladium overlay. We have fabricated a number of sensors with identical parameters and found that the relative error ratio in waist diameter is less than 6% and that in hydrogen response is 4.2%.

We obtain an extremely high current sensitivity by wrapping a section of microfiber on a thin-diameter chromium-nickel wire. Our detected current sensitivity is as high as 220.65 nm/A2 for a structure length of only 35 μm. Such sensitivity is two orders of magnitude higher than the counterparts reported in the literature. Analysis shows that a higher resistivity or/and a thinner diameter of the metal wire may produce higher sensitivity. The effects of varying the structure parameters on sensitivity are discussed. The presented structure has potential for low-current sensing or highly electrically-tunable filtering applications.

In this paper, we demonstrate high-efficiency inscription of Bragg gratings in microfiber. Strong Bragg gratings are easily inscribed using a 193-nm excimer laser and phase mask in microfiber drawn from the 62.5/125- μm standard multimode fiber (MMF) with no additional photosensitization treatment. The enlarged photosensitive core offered by the MMF provides a sufficient overlap between the fundamental mode and the induced refractive index modulation region, which significantly enhances the grating inscription efficiency. The grating inscription in the microfiber is even more efficient than that in the original MMF because the multibeam interference-induced fringe fuzziness in the normal size fiber does not occur as the fiber diameter down to the scale that is comparable with the Talbot length of the ultraviolet (UV)-writing light. The proposed method is beneficial for sensing and device applications of microfiber Bragg grating (mFBGs) because of the ease of fabrication, high coupling strength, and large wavelength separation between individual resonant dips.

This paper reviews the recent developments in microwave photonic devices based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) technology. The operation principle, functions and important specifications of an LCOS based optical processor are described. Three microwave photonic devices, which are microwave photonic notch filters, phase shifters and couplers, reported in the past five years are focused on in this paper. In addition, a new multi-function signal processing structure based on amplitude and phase control functions in conjunction with a power splitting function in a commercial LCOS based optical processor is presented. It has the ability to realize multiple time -shifting operations and multiple frequency-independent phase shifting operations at the same time and control multiple RF signal amplitudes, in a single unit. The results for the new multi-function microwave photonic signal processor demonstrate multiple tunable true time delay and phase shifting operations with less than 3 dB amplitude variation over a very wide frequency range of 10 to 40 GHz.

In this study, a high-resolution optical fiber Fabry⁻Pérot (FP) interferometer displacement sensor with chirped spectral characteristics based on a tapered microfiber is theoretically discussed and experimentally implemented. Instead of inscribing two fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) on the symmetric position of the microfiber, we continuously inscribed one long FBG along the microfiber region to reduce the cavity length. The bandwidth of the interferometer is over 35 nm, and its displacement sensitivity is as high as 36.5 nm/mm at the tension state.

This paper presents a detailed investigation on the cause of ripples in the frequency response of a microwave photonic phase shifter implemented using a 90° hybrid coupler. It was found that an unwanted radio frequency (RF) modulation sideband is generated at the modulator output due to the 90° hybrid coupler amplitude and phase imbalance. This resulted in phase shifter output RF signal amplitude variation and phase deviation. Experimental results demonstrated that incorporating an optical filter in the phase shifter structure can reduce the amplitude variation and phase deviation from 4.2 dB to 2.2 dB and from ±12° to ±3.8°, respectively, over a wide frequency range. A comparison of the loss and the dynamic range of the microwave photonic phase shifter implemented using a 90° hybrid coupler with a conventional fiber optic link is also presented.
