The term neoliberalism is a faithful companion of current public debates. It often serves as a proxy for what is allegedly wrong with society. The term is used to criticize a perceived commodification of spheres of human existence that used to be shielded from a purely economic logic. Recently, the term neoliberalism has become the object of historical research. Its roots have been traced back as far as 1947 or 1918. I argue in this paper that historians have taken a methodologically questionable approach, by departing from the blurry concept of neoliberalism as it is perceived today and trying to trace it back in time as far as possible. Such an approach leads to severe contradictions as economists labelled ex-post as neoliberals were often opposed to neoliberalism as it is currently defined. It is methodologically more sound and analytically more rewarding to start the conception of the term with the economists who self-identified as neoliberals. This approach leads to a more coherent concept of neoliberalism that is better suited for further research and provides a clearer understanding of the history of economic thought in the interwar period and the first postwar years.

5. The ‘means’ and the ‘ends’ of economic calculation: The missing aspect of an epochal dispute

- Abstract
Current technological advances have revived the old socialist calculation debate. While the arguments on the socialist side appear to be backed by exciting technological developments, the pro-market camp still mainly relies on the classical thinking of the Austrian school. A reasonable way to reinvigorate the freemarket thesis is to look at the ends of economic calculations, intentionally overlooked during the classical period of the debate. A valuable supplement to the contemporary pro-market position could be found in the ordoliberal vision that emphasised the interdependence of various spheres and the power problem.

The concept of rational behavior has a significant role in economics and its analysis of market economy and general equilibrium. On the other hand, there exists a logical relation between limits of rationality and learning from error. With explaining the concept of rational behavior in the neoclassical economics and its relation with the rational expectation hypothesis this article addresses the following two questions: First, has the idea of learning from error played a role in the formation of neoclassical concept of rational behavior? If not, secondly, can the idea play a role in improving the meaning of rational behavior in economics? In response to these question, the article reviews the following discussions: (a) the neoclassical concept of rational behaviors is reviewed and the critiques of behavioral economics and the theories of choice under uncertainty are discussed, (b) the rational usage of information and its relation with the meaning of rational behavior are examined, and in this context the importance of the idea of learning from error is explored, and (c) Karl Popper’s theory of rationality as openness to criticism and its consequence for the idea of learning from error in terms of conjecture and refutation will be discussed. The article finally uses the Austrian economists’, i.e. Hayek and Krizner, critiques regarding the neoclassical concept of rational behavior in order to show that Popper’s theory of rationality can improve the concept of rational behavior in economics.

TEACHER attitudes ,NEWSPAPERS - Abstract
This paper presents, for the first time in English translation, five writings of Carl Menger that appeared in Austrian newspapers: Crown-Prince Rudolf (1889); Survey on the Catholic University (1901); An Interview with Carl Menger (1903); The Conquest of the Universities (1907); The University Issue (1908). The introduction outlines a historical contextualization of the pieces. These writings provide some vital information concerning Menger's ideas on education, university, and free scientific research. The first piece is an obituary of Crown-Prince Rudolf, and offers a rich description of Rudolf's educational path and Menger's attitude as a teacher. The other four pieces focus more on Menger's academic activity and his assessment of the Austrian cultural struggle between Catholicism and free research. It appears that, in Menger's view, the spirit of free inquiry and science is fundamentally incompatible with any religious worldview, whenever the latter affects the method of the researcher, and the results of her/his work. PHILOSOPHY of economics , *POSITIVISM , *MATHEMATICAL economics , *PHILOSOPHY of science , *METHODOLOGICAL individualism , *LOGICAL positivism - Abstract
The conception of the founder of the Austrian School in his book on the philosophy of social sciences has been described by the supporters of this school as a total methodological individualism, upholding the absolute specificity of these sciences to those of nature, and as rejecting the use of mathematics in economics. On the contrary, we shall see that for Carl Menger the human individual was only the fundamental element of socio-economic structures, not reducible to it. Economic theory was to be inspired by the 'atomism' of natural sciences and determine the causes, effects, and laws of the studied phenomena, with the aim of predicting and controlling them. Empirical study had to unite with conceptual abstraction and mathematics in the degree determined by the simplicity or complexity of the field of research. These characteristics of C. Manger's conception, like others, make us assume an important (but unconfessed) influence of A. Comte's positivism. However, in order to prove it, we will try to restore his true philosophy of science, warped by the neo-positivism of the energeticist scientists and of the Vienna Circle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BUSINESS cycles ,UTILITY theory ,ECONOMIC man ,WEALTH - Abstract
Since most economic theories that discuss individual choices treat individuals as acting for reason, and thus in some way rationally, questions about the role that rationality plays in economics are of great importance. Rationality is often expressed by "Homo Economicus" through utility theory versus its identification through social terms by "Homo Sociologicus". In this framework, business cycle theory is often rooted in assumptions regarding individual or collective rationality. Thus, the study of business cycles in combination with the concept of rationality may shed light on methodological issues. This paper focuses on the Austrian tradition because of its distinct characteristics: (a) the view that economics is part of the broader concept of political economy; (b) its antithesis to mathematical formalism, (c) its antithesis between ideal types and reality, (d) the struggle between groups for the distribution of wealth; and (v) methodological reductionism. Hence, investigating the methodological origins of these ideas in economics and re-evaluating the influences that shaped them is quite useful for promoting dialogue in the methodology of economics. One of the distinctive features of the Austrian School of Economics has been its emphasis on the entrepreneur as central to the market process. One 20th century Austrian whose work is normally not thought of as making a major contribution to the Austrian theory of entrepreneurship is Ludwig Lachmann. However, a careful reading of his 1956 book Capital and its Structure can tease out a theory of the function of the entrepreneur that is distinctly different from that of Israel Kirzner, yet still clearly situated in an Austrian conception of the market process. In this contribution, I want to emphasize two points that have been raised by previous work on Lachmann, but not explored in any detail. The first is that Lachmann’s conception of entrepreneurship is deeply bound up with the need to engage in monetary calculation thanks to the heterogeneity of capital and uncertainty of the future. For Lachmann, the key function of the entrepreneur is to “specify” the uses of capital goods. Such specification requires the use of money prices and what Mises called monetary calculation. The second contribution is to offer more detail on the way in which entrepreneurs both creatively specify and re-specify the uses of their capital goods in response to profit and loss signals. The constant shuffling and reshuffling of capital goods, of which coming up with new products or new twists to old ones are a part, is the essence of Lachmann’s implicit vision of entrepreneurship. For Lachmann, entrepreneurship is bound up with resource ownership and deployment through the creation and revision of plans in ways that are much more active than Kirzner’s conception of the entrepreneur.

Israel Kirzner has made profound contributions to the theory of entrepreneurship. His considerable insights address the entrepreneurial function in the market process. Kirzner belongs to the Austrian school and hence assumes subjective decision-making, incomplete sets of knowledge for all subjects, and market disequilibria. He ascribes to entrepreneurs the ability to detect through alertness market disequilibria in dynamic competitive markets. Entrepreneurs as arbitrageurs bring markets closer to equilibria even if in a dynamic competitive market an equilibrium remains a theoretical utopia. In this short paper, we outline the most important aspects of Kirzner’s entrepreneurial approach and the function entrepreneurship has in marketdriven processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mises’s work of ‘Human action’ is analyzed in relation to the methodological conceptions of his predecessor C. Menger and of his successor F. von Hayek. Also, it is placed in the continuation of one of his previous works and in contrast to one that followed it. Some of his ideas can be better understood in such a way, while others show themselves as contradictory. It results that his attempt to combine apriorism with scientific realism explains some of major difficulties of Mises’s argumentation.

- Abstract
The Austrian economic theory approach, which we will summarize, questions the state's ability to improve the results of economic activity. The objective is to present as didactic as possible a modeling that offers great applicability to studies of economic crises resulting from strong state interventions in economic activity. The theory identifies in credit market manipulation the source of the distortions that give rise to the economic cycle. The expansion of bank credit without a prior increase in savings leads to an artificial reduction in interest rates. With the additional volume of lower interest credit, entrepreneurs embark on overly ambitious and unsustainable long-term projects. The result is always a crisis or a reduction in the potential economic growth rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Friedrich von Wieser was an economist who studied the relationship between economic science and social institutions. He gave us a great deal of instruments and ways to solve economic problems taking into account economic freedom. One of those contributions was a progressive taxation on goods and services in terms of marginal utility. This essay tries to focus, first of all, on the main ideas about Economy as a part of social context, and in second place, shows a model of progressive taxation on goods and services in terms of marginal utility as Wieser did. It is concluded that, by charging low taxes to higher marginal utility units, the well-being of low-income people is not harmed and that of high-income people is not harmed, since a fixed rate would not be paid., von Wieser a été l’un des premiers auteurs à étudier le phénomène économique dans le cadre des institutions sociales, apportant d’innombrables contributions pour aborder et résoudre certains des problèmes sociaux les plus importants de son temps dans le cadre des libertés économiques.

In this paper we’ll attempt to explain the connection between interventionism in financial markets, financial crises and economic downturns, as the main cause of the financial crisis mainstream models; As well as the connection between the theories of Austrian and Minsky’s economic cycle as branches of heterodox economic theory. In order to achieve this target, we’ll begin with a brief introduction of mainstream financial crises models in the orthodox economic literature, then we’ll examine the statements of the Austrian Business Cycle Theory and the Financial Instability Hypothesis, and evaluate whether a connection between the two. We conclude that Financial Instability Hypothesis can be studied as a particular case of the Austrian Business Cycle Theory.

This paper analyzes Schumpeter’s concept of the entrepreneur in comparison to Kirzner and the Austrian School of Economics. For this purpose, the research uses the original German text as the reference, both the first larger edition of 1911 and the later shorter editions (mainly the seventh edition of 1987, which is an unaltered reprint of the fourth edition of 1934). To elaborate on the differences and similarities between Schumpeter and the Austrian approach, the study focuses on the aspects of equilibrium, discovery, speculation, capital, profit, institutions, and development. The analysis shows how the entrepreneur acts as the motor of economic development and how profit and profit expectations serve as the motifs of entrepreneurial action – both for the pioneer of innovation and the imitators. Different from the Austrian School, Schumpeter applies the concept of equilibrium in the neoclassical sense as the starting point of his dynamic analysis. The Schumpeterian entrepreneur is that economic actor who breaks the statics to push the economy toward development, which is not merely economic growth because development signifies that fundamental changes of the economy take place in the process.

Capitalism is a term widely used by critics and advocates alike, but with little coherence to its meaning. Austrian economists Ludwig von Mises and F. A. Hayek, along with Chicago School economist Milton Friedman sought to turn it into a term of approval rather than criticism. Their different efforts to do so did not harmonize theoretically. When their respective ins ights and confusions are addressed a coherent theory of capitalism emerges, one that is critical, as was initially the case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two opposite approaches to the concept of real capital are considered. The presupposition for studying capital within the neoclassical school, which can be characterized as “empirical realism”, is the homogeneity of capital. This allows to apply formal methods of studying and modeling industrial processes but excludes from consideration the properties and characteristics of capital as a real factor of production. The approach of the Austrian school corresponding to traditions of “critical realism” in the economy focuses on real properties of capital and its role in the process of public production. The aim of this study is to clarify the idea of real capital, its properties, structural characteristics and mechanisms of formation. According to this, the characteristic of two different approaches is given. It is shown that the heterogeneity of capital is the basis of complementarity of capital goods and their combinations in each particular case of their application. The same capital goods have different performance depending on the method of their combination as a result of the production plans of entrepreneurs. Emergent properties of capital are also the result of the combination. Differences in the use and combination of capital determine its overall structure, subsystems of which are natural objects at different levels included in the production, capital goods themselves and their various combinations, social capital. Each of these subsystems is relatively independent and forms a higher level subsystem.

The present article aims to indicate the peculiarities and contradictions found in the price subsidy policies in Brazilian agriculture in the last decade. Despite State efforts carried out through the Minimum Prices Guarantee Policy (PGPM, in the original Portuguese), they have not been a good alternative for several producers. The Austrian School interpretation indicates that the information is not available in a homogenous way to economic agents and price interventions regarding the grant of subsidies, it bears unrevealed costs that raise the information asymmetry of the candidates for the minimum price policy, being unable to reach its objective of reducing such market information asymmetry.

This paper examines the economic contribution of Italian philosopher Benedetto Croce. Although deservedly credited as a great philosopher of the 20th century, he is seldom thought of as an economist. Yet, he is one. Croce's approach to economics most closely aligns with the "Austrian" school of economics, emphasizing the deductive method, a "praxeological" view of economics as a science of "human action", a subjective theory of value and economic facts, a radically subjectivist theory of cost, and resistance to positivism and naturalism. In many of these areas Croce formulated the principles of Austrian economics decades earlier than Mises, Hayek and other key members of this school. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

I assess Deirdre McCloskey's three volumes on the bourgeois revaluation and the making of the modern world, situating her contribution within a broader historical concern for ideas and context. In this regard, she is still seen to be making an essentially Weberian argument that revives aspects of an earlier German historicist tradition, but in a fashion that remains consistent with an Austrian understanding of economic processes and purposefulness. I find that she has not so much refuted the importance of institutions, technology, and science as placed each in its proper causal relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

His recent book, _Classical Economic Theory and the Modern Economy_, connects the dots in his critique by explaining, elaborating on, and advocating for classical economic theory. It should be a welcome addition to the reading lists of both amateurs and professional economists, whether one’s interest is in macroeconomics or the history of economic thought.

In this paper I will analyze and criticize Linsbichler’s recent proposition to interpret the fundamental axiom of Praxeology as analytic. I will first describe Linsbichler’s problem situation. I will then describe and criticize Linsbichler’s proposed solution to his problem; namely his interpretation of the fundamental axiom as analytic. I will argue that this idea does not fully utilize critical potentials that are available to improve the fundamental axiom. I will propose an alternative interpretation which I call the ‘critical interpretation’ that conserves the progressive aspects of Linsbichler’s proposal while eliminating undesirable ones.

- Abstract
Ludwig Von Mises is an Austrian School economist; the problems he addressed comprise philosophy, history, sociology, and politics. His proposal of praxeology seeks to understand human action for analysis in social sciences. In this way the objective is to explain Mises's contributions to economic history. Hermeneutics is used for the interpretation of Mises's ideas. It is concluded that his contributions to economic history allow us to overcome the merely empiricist and quantitative vision, instead he recognizes the importance of theory and the a priori categories for understanding reality., Resumen Ludwig von Mises es un economista de la Escuela Austriaca, los problemas que abordó abarcan la filosofía, historia, sociología y política.

The main purpose of the article is a critical analysis of the monetary policy strategy that is based on the adoption of money supply as an intermediate target. The analysis is conducted from the perspective of the theory of the Austrian school. The first part of the article presents an influence of the supply of money on changes of categories in economy according to mainstream theories of economics. The second part discusses the essence of the strategy of monetary policy using money supply as an intermediate target from the point of view of the main trend in economics. It is demonstrated that in order to use it, two elementary conditions must be met: the function of demand for money must be at least relatively stable and the central bank must practically shape changes in the money supply at the planned level. The third part is of key importance for the purpose of this article. It involves the criticism of Friedman’s principle, i.e. a constant increase in money supply as a monetary strategy. According to the Austrian theory, an increase in the quantity of money which is not financed by voluntary savings separates the time structure of production and consumption. Thus, after the period of prosperity there a collapse in production must take place. It is also pointed out that the crisis can be postponed only when the quantity of money increases at an ever faster rate.

Purpose: The study aimed to present the possibility of explaining fluctuations in agriculture using the theory of the business cycle of the Austrian School. The basis of this school's cycle theory is the theory of the structure of production (capital). It means that the production stages are arranged consistently with the technical and temporal process of producing and selling a consumer good. These stages in which capital goods are used are, to a different extent, distant from the final goods. Agriculture is a sector that is more distant from final goods than most of the other economic sectors. According to the Austrian School, the main reason for the cycle is the central bank's monetary expansion, leading to an increase in lending activities. Design/Methodology/Approach: In the analysis the causes and course of cyclical fluctua-tions in agriculture, the subject literature analysis, deduction, and verbal logic were pri-marily used. Findings: Credits go mainly to manufacturers producing in the early stages of the produc-tion structure. In consequence, it widens and lengthens. The result is a more dynamic than in other sectors growth in production, income, and prices, and thus also in agriculture. On the other hand, the narrowing and shortening of the production structure in the decline phase mean large drops in production, income, and agricultural prices. Practical Implications: The knowledge about dynamic changes in production and prices in agriculture enables farms to function better in the economy. While, in agricultural poli-cy, it allows for a better selection of instruments and the appropriate time of their applica-tion. Originality/Value: The research broadens the knowledge of the possibilities of using the theory of the business cycle of the Austrian School to explain the characteristics of the cy-cle in agriculture., peer-reviewed

How asset prices should be taken into account in monetary policy is a controversial question in mainstream discussion. These mainstream positions can be differentiated into two broad perspectives: the proactive and the reactive views. The proactive view advocates pricking the asset price bubble, while the reactive view argues against monetary policy targeting asset prices. In this article the relation between asset prices and the Austrian business cycle theory is examined. Following this, a critique of both the proactive and reactive views is provided and implications for monetary policy are deduced. Key words: Austrian Economics, Business Cycles, Asset Prices, Central Banks and their Policies. JEL Classification: B53, E32, E58.

Ibn Khaldun’s contributions to the development of economic thought in his great work al-Muqaddima have received almost no attention in Western academia. This paper studies the similarities between the thought of Ibn Khaldun and that of the leading authors of the liberal Austrian School, including Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich August von Hayek, and The School of Salamanca. Special attention is given to Professor Jesús Huerta de Soto’s work on the theory of the impossibility of socialism. This paper also examines how statist coercion and interventionism in areas such as trade, taxation and individual rights promote injustice and will lead to the eventual demise of civilization. The work of Ibn Khaldun captured the essence of a spontaneous order and of the evolution of institutions, and refuted the theory of the divine origin of kings well before the Age of Enlightenment. Lastly, this paper touches on important economic issues of interest to Austrian liberals such as the division of labor and specialization, cooperation, the role of markets, the price system, savings as a rationale for prosperity, the relation of wealth to population, the Laffer curve, the quantity theory of money, the subjective nature of value, and the correct interpretation of history. Key words: Liberalism, interventionism, coercion, Salamanca School, Austrian School. JEL Classification: B53. Austrian School ,Quantity theory of money ,Economy ,Value (economics) ,Sociology ,Geriatrics and Gerontology ,Humanities - Abstract
The essay starts positioning Simmel as a bridge between the money value theories of Menger and Mises, and claiming that his contribution is important in its own right; notably, his idea that money evolves towards more abstract forms as society becomes more complex. It states that this trend exists and that its course has not yet been completed. After that, the theories of money value of Menger, Mises and Simmel are succinctly described, with emphasis on the contributions to Mises’ theory of money value that can be traced back to Simmel. About Simmel’s theory of money value, it is argued that Simmel went one step further than Menger in stating that value is not only subjective but also inter-subjective; such a move is understood as a necessary step in his argument that there is a trend towards more abstract forms of money as society evolves. Key words: Value Theory, Austrian School, Definition of Money, Payment Systems. JEL Classification: B10, B13, E40, E42. Kvasnicˇka (2007) attempts to demonstrate that the gold standard may be an unlikely alternative for small economies to revert to. The crux of his argument deals with supply considerations that could prove fatal to a fledgling currency. An influx of gold from the world’s existing gold stock, or its new production could prove to be a destabilising supply-side factor undermining the usability, and hence, adoption, of such a monetary system. We find fault with this for two main theoretical reasons. First, a distinction must be made between gold stock, and monetary gold. Second, the mechanism that creates monetary gold works as a natural break on unrestrained supply growth. Several additional clarifications are necessary as well, among them the role money supply plays in the trade cycle, and the casual relationship that exists between supply and price. Finally, an insightful comparison used linking monetary gold in a small economy to the use of cigarettes in a Second World War P.O.W. camp must be slightly altered to make a true comparison. Kvasnicˇka does a great service to free-marketers by providing a theoretical attack on the choice of gold as a medium of exchange, however, in light of this paper’s theoretical conclusions, the free-market defence of commodity money endures. The triangle is an integral part of the history of economic thought. It has been used by writers such as Jevons (1871), Taussig (1896), Wicksell (1934, 1969) to illustrate and to help us understand capital theory. Since Hayek (1931) this geometrical figure has been used as a basic pedagogical device to explain the Austrian Business Cycle Theory (ABCT). The purpose of the present paper is to argue that the triangle is highly problematic, if not fatally flawed, and that if ABCT is to be made intelligible this tool of analysis must be either completely jettisoned, or heavily supplemented with a list (see below) of its shortcomings. Moreover in some ways the triangle has been responsible for the relative lack of development of ABCT for over a half century. Key words: Austrian economics, business cycle theory, praxeology, economic geometry, triangles. This paper offers a critique of the Austrian theory according to which social time preference determines the proportion between aggregate consumption and aggregate saving, and therefore also the volume of total investment expenditure. We argue that there is no such necessary relationship between the (pure) interest rate and the volume of aggregate investment. Then we discuss the implications of our thesis for growth theory and business-cycle theory, stressing in particular the need to distinguish between two types of growth and two corresponding types of inter-temporal misallocation. Key words: Time Preference, Time Market, Investment Expenditure, Growth Types, Inter-Temporal Mis-allocation, Austrian Business-Cycle Theory, Austrian Macroeconomics. JEL classification: B53, D01, D40, D92, E22, E32, E43. The purpose of this paper is to offer a critique of the theory according to which social time preference determines the proportion between aggregate consumption and aggregate saving, and therefore also the volume of total investment expenditure. This theory is held by virtually all Austrian economists past and present. We will first present it based on Rothbard’s Man, Economy, and State, where it is stated in the clearest and most detailed form. The centennial of the publication of the first German edition of Ludwig von Mises’s The Theory of Money and Credit offers an excellent opportunity to reconsider a long-standing controversy within modern Austrian economics. This revolves around the question of whether Ludwig von Mises favored 100-percent gold reserve banking imposed by law or free banking based on gold as the ideal monetary system. In this paper, I suggest that this debate is fundamentally misfocused and conflates means and ends. I argue that Mises advocated free banking as the most suitable means for achieving the goal of suppressing the issue of fiduciary media, in the form of bank notes and demand deposits. This goal was first enunciated by the nineteenth-century British currency school and embodied in its famous «currency principle.» My thesis is that Mises was a proponent of both the currency principle and free banking and that he viewed the latter as the indispensable means to regulate the behavior of the money supply according to the former. In defending this thesis, I seek to reframe the debate on Mises’s monetary views in a more meaningful way and to contribute to its resolution. Key words: Mises, Currency School, Free Banking, Currency Principle, Monetary Equilibrium. JEL Classification: B31, B53, E42, E52. Hedge funds and funds of hedge funds are some of the preferred ways to access capital market opportunities by institutional investors and high net worth individuals seeking vehicles of absolute return. Risks and returns are difficult to assess because of skewness and kurtosis so that traditional mean and variance analyses are inappropriate. Inside the «economics of war» field of study, very few economists have tried to build a systematic theory of the consequences of the different methods of financing wars. Even fewer economists have ever attempted to elaborate a theory that meets both efficiency and ethical criteria. The first studies in this field can be traced back to the late scholastics. Francisco Suarez (1548-1617) and Francisco de Vitoria (1486-1546) are well known as founders of international law studies. The latter, using his characteristic juridical approach to ethical problems, concludes that the prince can use no neutral person or private property in order to wage a war1. But it was Juan de Mariana (1536-1623) who first tried to unite the ethical and the economic dimension of war finance. Mariana started by analyzing the question of the resources the prince is allowed to use for waging a war. His answer could be described as a libertarian answer; the king is not the owner of the properties of his subjects, and thus, he cannot dispose of them at his whim but only after having gained the acceptance of the owner. Then he turned to the different financial tools, and he described the economic consequences of their use. After dealing with the effects of taxation, inflation and the king’s credit, he recommended that both the king and the citizens be aware of the ethical and practical point of views2. After Mariana, very few thinkers have worked on war finance combining both approaches. In this last century the Austrian School of Economics has contributed to the development of the war finance theory by the hand of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard. The first, concentrated his analysis on the possible use of the means to wage a war, and their consequences. On the contrary Rothbard´s approach is known for its focus on the ethical approach to war finance.

This survey represents a recollection of the contributions of prominent Austrian economists on the subject of the exchange rate determination (Mises, Hayek and Haberler). We review the theoretical fundaments that allow for a comprehensive understanding of the microeconomic forces that determine exchange rates. Then we examine the Purchasing Power Parity Theory, both from a neoclassical and Austrian viewpoint. Finally we inspect the international movements of money and the associations of these with the dynamics of the balance of payments and exchange rate. We leave open the door for future investigations over the idea of incorporating the notion of the Interest rates Parity, intended as a «tendency law», in the Austrian theory. Key words: Exchange rate, Austrian theory, purchasing power parity, balance of payments, international capital movements. The election of Pope Francis reanimated the intellectual debate about capitalism and socialism in the Catholic Church. This paper starts from this discus sion in order to analyze the economic thinking of the Austrian School in relation to Christian anthropology. Seven years after the outset of the Great recession, the debate continues as to which economic policies are necessary to return to a state of balanced and sustainable growth. In this context, many voices demand more active participation of central banks, including more forceful implementation of monetary policy measures. The Austrian school of economic thought maintains that monetary and financial systems play a key role, but it does so from a foundation that is radically opposed to that of other economic schools. The goal of this article is to analyze Euro Area monetary policy, not only highlighting the benefits of the Euro for its member countries, but also emphasizing the fundamental errors in foundation and design of this policy from the perspective of the Austrian school. Key words: Monetary Policy, Economic and Monetary Union,The Austrian School of Economics, Jesus Huerta de Soto. JEL Classification: B53, E4, E5, E52, E58, E61.
