Truffles are highly demanded edible fungi. They belong to the genus Tuber and have very high economic value, with Tuber magnatum being one of the most expensive and gastronomically used. This study evaluates the potential of five introduce tree species as mycorrhizal hosts for T. magnatum in Chile. Seeds from Quercus cerris, Q. robur and Corylus avellana were harvested from adult trees. Cuttings from Populus nigra and Salix caprea were harvested in the field and asexually propagated under greenhouse conditions. After two months, they were transplanted to 260 cc pots containing sterilized composted pine bark. A spore suspension (106 spores/plant) of T. magnatum was injected directly into plant roots. Three months after inoculation we observed spore germination and the presence of mycelium around the roots in some seedlings. After seven months, we observed mycorrhizae from T. magnatum only in Q. cerris, Q. robur and C. avellana, characterized by their epidermoid mantle and awl-shaped, bristle-like cystidia. The identification the mycorrhizal structures was confirmed by sequencing of the nuclear ITS- rDNA region. This study provide the first advances for the domestication of this highly valuable truffle in Chile and South America and the successful mycorrhized plants could be used in further field assays. Some Quercus, Populus and Salix species have been used as ornamental plants and are naturalized in Chile for over 100 years. Additionally, hazelnut (Corylus avellana) is currently grown in the country under intensive silviculture. These tree species could act as a non-intentional host for truffles, dispersed from production sites.

Almost all orchid species depend on association with fungal partners. These fungal species facilitate orchid seed germination and promote growth and possibly stress tolerance in adult plants, both in the field and laboratory conditions. Codonorchis lessonii is a terrestrial orchid, endemic to southern Chile and Argentina with a currently unknown conservation status. Previous studies have reported Rhizoctonia-like fungi associated with C. lessonii in Argentina, but their fungal partners in Chilean populations are unknown. This study aims to characterize and isolate the mycorrhizal fungi associated with adult individuals of C. lessonii from three different populations in Central-South Chile. Root sections showing pelotons were used for the isolation and identification of the fungal taxa. Radial fungal growth was measured for all mycelial isolates. The presence of binucleate cells placed all isolates within the families Ceratobasidiaceae and Tulasnellaceae and the identification was confirmed by molecular analysis. Fungal isolates belonging to Ceratobasidiaceae grew at a higher rate than those from Tulasnellaceae. Phylogenetic analyses showed that different fungal partners associate with this orchid, suggesting relatively low specificity. The isolation and identification of the fungal partners of C. lessonii could help understand its ecology and contribute in future restoration and propagation initiatives for the species. RESUMEN La mayoría de las especies de orquídeas dependen de la asociación con hongos. Estas especies de hongos facilitan la germinación de las semillas promueven el crecimiento y, posiblemente, la tolerancia al estrés en plantas adultas tanto en terreno como en condiciones de laboratorio. Codonorchis lessonii es una orquídea terrestre, endémica del sur de Chile y Argentina, con un estado de conservación desconocido. Estudios previos han reportado hongos tipo Rhizoctonia asociados con C. lessonii en Argentina, pero los hongos asociados a las poblaciones chilenas no se conocen. Este estudio apunta a caracterizar y aislar los hongos micorrícicos asociados con individuos adultos de C. lessonii de tres poblaciones en la zona centro-sur de Chile. Secciones de raíz con evidencia de pelotones se usaron para aislación e identificación de los taxa fúngicos. El crecimiento radial de los hongos se midió en todos los aislados de micelio. La presencia de células binucleadas ubica a todos los aislados dentro de las familias Ceratobasidiaceae y Tulasnellaceae, identificación confirmada con el análisis molecular. Los aislados de las Ceratobasidiaceae crecieron a una tasa mayor que los de las Tulasnellaceae. El análisis filogenético mostró que diferentes hongos se asocian con esta orquídea, sugiriendo una baja especificidad. La identificación y aislamiento de hongos asociados con C. lessonii podría ayudar a entender su ecología y contribuir a futuras iniciativas de propagación y restauración de esta especie.

Orchids require symbiotic fungi and/or specific conditions to germinate. Asymbiotic techniques have been shown successful for orchid germination. In Chile, Chloraea include many endemic, and potentially ornamental, terrestrial orchid species. In this study, individuals of Chloraea crispa, C. gavilu and C. virescens were manually autopollinated. The resulting capsules were sterilized and seeds were aseptically obtained. We evaluated asymbiotic germination in: Agar Water (AW), Knudson C (KC), Banana Culture Media (CMB), Tomato Culture Media (CMT), Malmgren Modified (MM), Murashige and Skoog (MS), and MS modified (MS1/2). Seeds were incubated in the dark at 24±1 ºC for 2 weeks. Then they were put in 16/8 h light/dark cycles for 14 weeks. We registered germination and embryo development in the different culture media. After 8 weeks, all tested Chloraea species germinated in most culture media. After 16 weeks, embryos in MM showed an evident shoot. In AW only the pre-germination stage was achieved. In C. gavilu germination was over 90% in MM, CMT, and CMB. In KC, a lower germination was obtained in all tested species compared to the other culture media, except for AW. Asymbiotic germination of endemic Chilean orchids could be a viable strategy for their conservation and propagation as ornamental species. RESUMEN Las orquídeas requieren hongos simbióticos y/o condiciones específicas para germinar. Las técnicas asimbióticas se han mostrado efectivas para la germinación de orquídeas. En Chile Chloraea incluye muchas especies de orquídeas endémicas terrestres y con potencial ornamental. En este estudio, individuos de Chloraea crispa, C. gavilu y C. virescens fueron autopolinizados manualmente. Las cápsulas resultantes fueron esterilizadas y se obtuvieron las semillas asépticamente. Se evaluó la germinación asimbiótica en: Agar Agua (AW), Knudson C (KC), Medio de Cultivo Banana (CMB), Medio de Cultivo Tomate (CMT), Malmgren Modified (MM), Murashige y Skoog (MS), y en MS modificado (MS1/2). Las semillas se incubaron en oscuridad a 24±1 ºC por 2 semanas. Luego fueron puestas en ciclos de 16/8 h luz/oscuridad por 14 semanas. Se registró la germinación y desarrollo del embrión en los diferentes medios de cultivo. Luego de 8 semanas, todas las especies de Chloraea estudiadas germinaron en la mayoría de los medios de cultivo. Luego de 16 semanas, los embriones en MM mostraron un brote evidente. En AW sólo se alcanzó la etapa de pregerminación. En C. gavilu, la germinación fue sobre el 90% en MM, CMT y CMB. En KC se obtuvo una menor germinación en todas las especies comparado con los otros medios de cultivo, excepto AW. La germinación asimbiótica de orquídeas endémicas de Chile puede ser una estrategia viable para su conservación y propagación como especies ornamentales.

Chloraea cuneata es una orquídea endémica de Chile en Peligro Crítico de Extinción. Se aislaron e identificaron hongos orquidioides a partir de pelotones ubicados en células corticales de sus raíces pertenecientes al género-forma Rhizoctonia, teleomorfo Thanatephorus (multinucleado), los que podrían ser usados en iniciativas de conservación.

Chilean vegetation has been described based on dominant trees and shrubs, giving little attention to less conspicuous plants such as pteridophytes sensu lato (ferns and lycophytes). These plants have different ecological demands and reproductive strategies than woody plants and are excellent tools to recognize vegetation zones. In the present study we analyze the distributional patterns of the 124 pteridophyte taxa occurring in continental Chile, regarding species richness and habitat preferences distribution. Using Jaccard’s similarity index and grouping analysis, we obtained 5 pteridophyte zones that are significantly different from each other. Species richness distribution showed unimodal pattern with latitude, increasing from 17º S toward south up to a maximal value at 40º S and abruptly decreasing southward. These patterns are coincident with the habitat preference where the xerophytic species tend to decrease with latitude. In contrast, epiphytic pteridophytes increased with latitude, as temperate forests appear. Terrestrial hygrophytic species were present in all areas, but showed a southward increase. These distributions suggest an important role of the precipitation patterns, which is considered a limiting resource for pteridophytes’ life cycle. La vegetación de Chile se ha descrito basada en los árboles y arbustos dominantes, prestando poca atención a plantas menos conspicuas como las pteridófitas sensu lato (helechos y licófitas). Estas plantas tienen diferentes demandas ecológicas y estrategias reproductivas que las plantas leñosas y son excelentes herramientas para reconocer zonas vegetacionales. En este estudio, analizamos los patrones de distribución de 124 taxa de pteridófitos de Chile continental, en particular, la distribución de la riqueza de especies y las preferencias de hábitat de las mismas. Usando el índice de similitud de Jaccard y análisis de agrupamiento se obtuvieron 5 zonas pteridofíticas significativamente diferentes entre sí. La distribución de la riqueza específica mostró una tendencia unimodal con la latitud, aumentando desde los 17º S hasta llegar a un valor máximo a los 40º S, declinando abruptamente hacia el sur. Estos patrones coinciden con el tipo de hábitat, donde las especies xerofíticas tienden a disminuir con la latitud. En contraste, los pteridófitos epífitos incrementan con la latitud, al aparecer los bosques templados. Las especies higrofíticas terrestres se encuentran presentes en todas las áreas, pero aumentan hacia el sur. Estas distribuciones sugieren un importante rol de los patrones de precipitación, factor considerado como limitante para el ciclo de vida de las pteridofitas.

Environmental conditions can affect lichen morphology, physiology and chemistry. Some functional traits; like thickness of thallus layers, photosystems condition, and presence of photoprotective and antioxidant compounds are key to colonizing new sites, and can change depending on light and moisture availability. In the present study, we compared the morphology, physiology and chemistry of the native Chilean lichen Pseudocyphellaria flavicans from two Coastal populations (Nahuelbuta and Contulmo, Araucanía district), and one Andean population (Ralco, Bío-Bío district). Ralco is a more closed secondary forest, and can show dryer periods compared to Nahuelbuta and Contulmo. We found differences in thalli anatomy between populations. Ralco individuals had thinner upper cortex than Nahuelbuta individuals. Contulmo individuals had similar upper cortex thickness compared to the other two populations. We also found differences in the response of the maximal efficiency of the PSII (Fv/Fm) to desiccation and in the in situ values measured. We did not find differences between populations in the chemical traits. The differences between populations could be attributed to differences in local environmental conditions, namely moisture and light. Las condiciones ambientales afectan la morfología, fisiología y química de los líquenes. Ciertos rasgos funcionales, como el grosor de las distintas capas del talo, estado de los fotosistemas, y presencia de compuestos fotoprotectores y antioxidantes son claves para colonizar nuevos sitios y pueden variar dependiendo de la disponibilidad de luz y humedad. En este trabajo se comparó la morfología, fisiología y química de individuos del liquen nativo de Chile Pseudocyphellaria flavicans de dos poblaciones de la Cordillera de la Costa (Nahuelbuta y Contulmo, Región de la Araucanía) y una de la Cordillera de los Andes (Ralco, Región del Bío-Bío). Ralco es un bosque más cerrado y presenta periodos más secos, comparado con Nahuelbuta y Contulmo. Se encontraron diferencias significativas en la anatomía del talo entre poblaciones. Los individuos de Ralco presentaron una corteza superior más delgada en relación con los de Nahuelbuta. Los individuos de Contulmo presentaron una corteza similar a las otras dos poblaciones. También se encontraron diferencias en las curvas de respuesta de la eficiencia máxima del PSII (Fv/Fm) a la desecación y los valores medidos in situ. No se encontraron diferencias entre poblaciones en las variables químicas medidas. Las diferencias entre poblaciones podrían atribuirse a diferencias en las condiciones ambientales locales, principalmente humedad y luminosidad.

Twining in some Convolvulaceae can be induced by leaf damage and jasmonic acid application. This induced response is believed to reduce the likelihood of future leaf damage and it is limited by drought. This response has been detected in the Convolvulaceae family using artificial damage. The mechanisms and ecological implications of this response are still unknown. In this study was tested if the induced twining requires a threshold level and if it is induced by volatiles and/or by snail damage. Three separated greenhouse experiments were conducted in order to test the induced twining in Ipomoea purpurea (Convolvulaceae) by applying different levels of artificial damage (0, 1, 5, 10 perforations to the leaves), volatiles (ground leaves) and natural damage by snails. Plants receiving the two higher damage levels twined faster than the individuals exposed to the two lower damage levels. Plants exposed to grounded leaves (volatiles) twined faster than control plants. Finally, twining was induced by snail damage more than in undamaged plants. Most growth traits did not change in any treatment. Twining in I. pupurea can be induced by artificial or natural damage, and also by volatiles emitted by damaged leaves of neighbor plants, making the induced twining an ecologically relevant response. El trepado en algunas Convolvulaceae puede ser inducido por el daño foliar y por la aplicación de ácido jasmónico. Esta respuesta inducida se cree que reduce la probabilidad de daño futuro a las hojas y está limitada por la sequía. Se ha detectado esta respuesta en la familia Convolvulaceae usando daño artificial. Los mecanismos y las implicancias ecológicas de esta respuesta aún se desconocen. En este trabajo, se evaluó si la inducción de trepado requiere un nivel umbral de daño y si se puede inducir por volátiles y/o por daño por caracoles. Se realizaron tres experimentos independientes donde se registró la inducción de trepado en Ipomoea purpurea (Convolvulaceae) aplicando diferentes niveles de daño (0, 1, 5, 10 perforaciones a las hojas), volátiles (hojas molidas) y daño natural por caracoles. Las plantas expuestas a los dos más altos niveles de daño artificial se enroscaron más rápido que las expuestas a los dos niveles menores de daño. Las plantas expuestas a hojas molidas (volátiles) se enroscaron más rápido que las plantas control. Finalmente, el trepado se indujo con el daño por caracoles, siendo más rápido que en las plantas no dañadas. La mayoría de los rasgos de crecimiento no se alteraron en ningún tratamiento. El trepado en I. purpurea puede ser inducido por daño artificial o natural, como también por volátiles emitididos por hojas dañadas de plantas vecinas, convirtiendo la inducción de trepado en una respuesta inducida ecológicamente relevante.

The "murtilla" (Ugni molinae Turcz., Myrtaceae), present in Contulmo Natural Monument (Araucanía Region, Chile), is affected by witches'broom disease, caused by the presence of a phytoplasma in the sieve tubes of the phloem. This phytoplasma affects plants morphoanatomically, producing evident symptoms. Infected branches show reddening of leaves and general dwarfism. In the present study, we compared morphoanatomically and physiologically branches (modules) of murtilla with and without symptoms of witches'broom disease. This was done in order to quantitatively evaluate the actual effect of the infection on adult plants. We cut branches of similar age, with and without symptoms, where we measured fluorescence, chlorophyll content, specific leaf area, stem size, pith size, and vessel size and number. We also measured fruit traits in symptomatic and asymptomatic plants. We did not found differences in the Fv/Fm (maximun efficiency of the PSII) and total chlorophyll content between symptomatic and asymptomatic modules. However, symptomatic modules had lower pith area, vessel size, and leaf area, and dry weight than asymptomatic modules. Infected plants also had less fruits per plant and with less total soluble solutes (TSS) in the fruits compared to healthy plants, although average individual fruit weight was similar between symptomatic and asymptomatic plants. Witches'broom disease affects the anatomy, morphology, and quality and quantity of fruits of murtilla plants. However, the disease does not seem to affect some physiological parameters. The murtilla in Chile has high economical potential as an edible fruit and in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. Future studies should focus on the vector of the disease and the possible effects of the infection on other commercially-relevant traits. La murtilla (Ugni molinae Turcz., Myrtaceae), presente en el Monumento Natural Contulmo (Región de la Araucanía, Chile), se encuentra afectada por la enfermedad "escoba de bruja", causada por la presencia de un fitoplasma en los tubos cribosos del floema. Este fitoplasma afecta morfoanatómicamente a las plantas, produciendo síntomas apreciables a simple vista. Las ramas afectadas presentan enrojecimiento de las hojas y enanismo generalizado. En este estudio se compararon morfoanatómica y fisiológicamente ramas de murtilla (módulos) con y sin síntomas de la enfermedad escoba de bruja. Esto con el objetivo de evaluar cuantitativamente el efecto real de la infección en plantas adultas. Se extrajeron ramas de edad similar, con y sin sintomatología, donde se evaluaron parámetros de fluorescencia, contenido de clorofila, área foliar específica, tamaño de tallos, área de médula del tallo y tamaño y número de vasos. Además se evaluaron las características de los frutos de plantas sintomáticas y asintomáticas. No se encontraron diferencias significativas en el Fv/Fm (eficiencia máxima del PSII) y contenido total de clorofilas entre módulos asintomáticos y sintomáticos. Sin embargo, los módulos sintomáticos presentan menor área de medula, tamaño de vasos, área foliar y peso seco que módulos asintomáticos. Las plantas enfermas, además, presentaron menos frutos por planta y con menos sólidos solubles totales (SST) que las plantas sanas, aunque el peso individual promedio de los frutos no varió entre plantas con y sin síntomas. La enfermedad escoba de bruja afecta la anatomía y morfología de las plantas de murtilla y la calidad y cantidad de los frutos, sin embargo, la enfermedad no parece afectar algunos parámetros fisiológicos. La murtilla en Chile tiene un alto potencial económico como alimento y en la industria cosmética y farmacéutica, por lo que futuros estudios debiesen considerar el vector de transmisión y los efectos que podría producir esta enfermedad en otras características de interés comercial.

Mosses are poikilohydrous non-vascular plants, usually with some degree of desiccation tolerance. Dendroid mosses have conducting tissues that make them analogous to vascular plants. Functional studies on these mosses, however, are scarce. Dendroligotrichum dendroides is a dendroid moss that occurs in Chile in the understory of temperate forests where it can be exposed to summer drought. We studied desiccation tolerance and rehydration capacity on D. dendroides from two populations with contrasting precipitation. We sampled plants from the northern part of their distribution (Contulmo, Araucanía district; lower precipitation), and from a southern population in Katalapi (Los Lagos district; higher precipitation). We measured relative water content and maximum efficiency of the PSII (Fv/Fm) in plants exposed to desiccation and rehydration. Plants from both populations showed desiccation tolerance and were able to recover their Fv/Fm after rehydration. However, the northern population lost water more slowly and recovered the Fv/Fm to higher values compared to the southern population. The northern population can be exposed to summer droughts. The southern population receives rain throughout the year. These differences could be attributed to local adaptation to the precipitation regimens of each site. Further studies are needed to unveil the physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying the desiccation tolerance of D. dendroides. Los musgos son plantas no vasculares poiquilohídricas, usualmente con algún grado de tolerancia a la desecación. Los musgos dendroides tienen tejidos conductores que los hacen análogos a las plantas vasculares. Sin embargo, los estudios funcionales en estos musgos son escasos. Dendroligotrichum dendroides es un musgo dendroide que crece en Chile en el sotobosque del bosque templado, donde puede exponerse a sequía estival. En este trabajo se estudia la tolerancia a la desecación y la capacidad de rehidratación en D. dendroides de dos poblaciones con diferente precipitación. Muestreamos plantas de la parte norte de su distribución (Contulmo, Región de la Araucanía; baja precipitación), y de la parte sur en Katalapi (Región de Los Lagos; alta precipitación). Se midió el contenido relativo de agua y la eficiencia máxima del PSII (Fv/Fm) en plantas expuestas a desecación y rehidratación. Las plantas de ambas poblaciones mostraron tolerancia a la desecación y fueron capaces de recuperar el Fv/Fm luego de la rehidratación. Sin embargo, la población del norte perdió agua más lento y recuperó su Fv/Fm a valores mayores comparado con la población del sur. La población norte puede estar expuesta a períodos de sequía en verano. La población del sur recibe lluvia durante todo el año. Estas diferencias podrían atribuirse a adaptación local a los distintos regímenes de precipitación de cada sitio. Más estudios se requieren para entender los mecanismos fisiológicos y bioquímicos que subyacen la tolerancia a la desecación en D. dendroides.

In drought condition, plants increase survival chance by adjusting their functional traits and by biological associations. Mycorrhizae association and artificial watering have been shown to increase plant survival under drought, especially at early developmental stages when plants are more susceptible. In Chile, Pinus radiata is the most important forest species. It is grown mainly in Central Chile, where precipitations are predicted to drop in 40% and change in frequency in the future due to climate change. Rhizopogon luteolus is an ectomycorrhizae usually associated with Pinus species and has been found to increase drought tolerance. We addressed the effect of R. luteolus inoculation on survival and functional traits of P. radiata seedlings exposed to two watering treatments. These treatments simulated control (50 ml) and 40% reduced precipitations (20 ml). We also evaluated the combined effect of watering quantity (20 and 50 ml) and frequency (every 5, 10 and 30 days) on the same variables. R. luteolus inoculation increased seedling survival, but reduced plant size. Watering quantity affected plant survival only at intermediate watering frequencies, but not at the high and low frequencies. The lowest frequency, normal for the summer of Central Chile, resulted in -80% seedling mortality. Most of the functional traits measured were not affected neither by watering frequency nor quantity, but they were affected by mycorrhization. Mycorrhizae inoculation, together with some sort of artificial watering could be a possible strategy to cope with prolonged drought events. En condiciones de sequía, las plantas aumentan la probabilidad de sobrevivir ajustando sus rasgos funcionales y por medio de asociaciones biológicas. Las asociaciones micorrícicas y el riego artificial aumentan la sobrevivencia en condiciones de sequía, especialmente en etapas tempranas del desarrollo, cuando las plantas son más sensibles. En Chile, Pinus radiata es la especie forestal más importante. Se planta principalmente en Chile central, donde se predice que las precipitaciones disminuirán en un 40% y cambiará su frecuencia en el futuro debido al cambio climático. Rhizopogon luteolus es una ectomicorriza usualmente asociada a especies de Pinus y se ha encontrado que aumenta la tolerancia a la sequía. Se analizó el efecto de la inoculación de R. luteolus en la sobrevivencia y rasgos funcionales de plántulas de P. radiata expuestas a dos tratamientos de riego. Estos tratamientos simulan precipitaciones control (50 ml) y reducidas a un 40% (20 ml). También se evaluó el efecto combinado de la cantidad (20 y 50 ml) y frecuencia (cada 5, 10 y 30 días) de riego en las mismas variables. La inoculación con R. luteolus aumentó la sobrevivencia pero redujo el tamaño de las plántulas. La cantidad de riego afectó la sobrevivencia de las plantas sólo en la frecuencia intermedia de riego, pero no en las frecuencias alta y baja. La frecuencia más baja, normal para el verano de Chile central, resultó en -80% de mortalidad de plántulas. La mayoría de los rasgos funcionales no fueron afectados por la frecuencia o cantidad de riego, pero si por la micorrización. La inoculación con micorrizas, en conjunto con algún tipo de riego artificial, podría ser una posible estrategia para lidiar con eventos de sequía prolongada.

In Chilean temperate forest, the fern Blechnum chilense has a wide ecological breath, but occur mainly in full sun habitats, while Blechnum mochaenum is restricted only to shady sites. We evaluated if the species with different ecological breath behave similarly in their anatomical and physiological traits. Maximal photosynthetic rate (Amax), Stomatal conductance (g s), evapotranspiration (E), and SLA (specific leaf area) were measured in situ in 20 individuals of each fern species. Additionally, we estimated the stomatal density (SD), stomatal index (SI), and stomatal size in leaves of each sampled individual. B. mochaenum, the shade-tolerant species, had lower SD, SI, A, and E, and higher stomatal size and SLA than B. chilense. Higher stomatal frequency could result in greater gas exchange in open sites for B. chilense. The leaf physiology of these fern species seems to depend partially on their stomatal traits. En el bosque templado de Chile, el helecho Blechnum chilense se encuentra principalmente en lugares abiertos y soleados, mientras que el helecho Blechnum mochaenum está restringido a lugares sombríos. En este estudio se evalúa si ambas especies de Blechnum, de lugares abiertos y sombreados, se comportan de manera similar respecto de sus rasgos anatómicos y fisiológicos, y si existe diferencia en la correlación entre estos rasgos. Se midió la tasa fotosintética máxima (Amax), conductancia estomática (g s), evapotranspiración (E) y SLA (área foliar específica) in situ en 20 individuos de cada especie de helecho. Adicionalmente, se estimó la densidad estomática (SD), el índice estomático (SI) y el tamaño de los estomas en hojas de cada individuo muestreado. Blechnum mochaenum, la especies sombra-tolerante, presentó menor SD, SI, Amax y E, y mayor tamaño de estomas y SLA que B. chilense. Una frecuencia estomática mayor podría resultar en una mayor tasa de intercambio de gases en los sitios abiertos para B. chilense. La fisiología de las hojas de estas especies de helechos parece depender, en parte, de las características estomáticas.

Se midió la conductancia hidráulica específica (Ks) y el intercambio de gases en individuos de D. dendroides (Polytrichaceae, Musci). There is evidence that some climbing plants increase their twining rate after leaf damage, thus avoiding ground herbivores, and that drought limits this induced response. However, it is unknown whether leaf damage and drought affect the search for support, an ecologically relevant process for climbing plants. We evaluated the combined effect of drought and leaf damage on support searching in the twining vine Ipomoeapupurea (Convolvulaceae). Plants were assigned to a combination of three watering treatments (regular watering, moderate drought, and severe drought) and two damage treatments (control and 50% defoliation). We placed a stake at 15 cm from the stem and recorded the time to successful twining (360° turn). We also measured some plant functional traits to explore possible mechanisms. Leaf damage decreased time to successful twining in all treatments with the exception of severe drought. Severe drought decreased plant growth, particularly when combined with leaf damage. In nature, climbing plants are usually not in contact with a support in the early stages. The searching behavior seems to increase with leaf damage, but it is restricted by water shortage. Plants experiencing both leaf damage and severe drought will be less likely to find a support, resulting in higher probability of further leaf damage.

The environment may limit the expression of induced responses to herbivory, such as increased chemical or physical defenses. Recent studies in climbing plants have shown that leaf damage induces twining. This response may confer protection against ground herbivores in the field. We addressed the effect of drought on the induced twining of the annual vine Ipomoea purpurea (Convolvulaceae), which can experience drought stress in natural conditions. In a greenhouse experiment, we recorded twining rate (proportion of plants successfully climbing at a given time) of damaged and undamaged individuals of I. purpurea subjected to control watering and water shortage treatments. We also estimated stem growth rate and stem water content in experimental plants, just after the evaluation of climbing success. Plants in the drought treatment showed reduced twining induction by leaf damage compared to control plants. Neither stem growth nor stem water content were affected by leaf damage or drought. Results suggest that drought constrains the induced twining through mechanisms not directly related to stem growth and water content. It is suggested that drought might trigger signals that counteract those elicited by leaf damage. The induced twining may be an advantage in the presence of ground herbivores, but the environmental susceptibility of this response may limit its ecological significance. En este estudio investigamos el efecto de la sequía sobre la inducción de trepado en la trepadora anual Ipomoea purpurea (Convolvulaceae), planta que en condiciones naturales puede experimentar estrés por sequía. En un experimento de invernadero, se registró la tasa de enredo (proporción de plantas que se enredan exitosamente en un tiempo dado) de plantas dañadas y no dañadas de I purpurea, expuestas a tratamientos de riego control y sequía. También se estimó la tasa de crecimiento y el contenido hídrico del tallo, justo después de la evaluación del trepado. Las plantas en el tratamiento de sequía mostraron una reducción en la inducción de trepado por daño foliar comparado con plantas control. Ni la tasa de crecimiento ni el contenido hídrico se afectaron por el daño foliar o la sequía.
