In this investigation, single nucleotide variants (SNVs) within the chicken interferon-inducible transmembrane protein (chIFITM) genes were explored in Aseel and Kadaknath breeds. Comparative analysis with the GRCg6a reference genome revealed 9 and 16 SNVs in the chIFITM locus for Aseel and Kadaknath breeds, respectively. When referencing the Genome Reference Consortium GRCg7b, Kadaknath exhibited 10 variants, contrasting with none in Aseel. Notably, 17, 8, 2, and 5 SNVs were identified in chIFITM1, chIFITM2, chIFITM3, and chIFITM5 genes, with chIFITM1 showing the highest polymorphism in Kadaknath, featuring 10 intronic variants, including three SNVs (rs16457112, rs16457111, and rs313341707) common to both breeds. Two synonymous exonic variants (g.1817767C > A and g.1819102C > T) were also noted in chIFITM1. Although chIFITM protein sequences were generally conserved, genetic variations clustered predominantly in UTR and intronic regions. Examination of immune response dynamics in live embryos uncovered notable variations in chIFITM gene expression across diverse organs and chicken breeds. Specifically, chIFITM1 mRNA was abundant in cecal tonsils for both breeds and bursa of Aseel (7.61 folds), but it was absent in the heart and lung tissues of both breeds. Conversely, chIFITM3 consistently exhibited heightened expression, particularly in bursa of Aseel (10.23 folds). Whereas mRNA of the chIFITM2 gene was found to be abundant in the heart of Kadaknath (11.03 folds) and lung of both breeds. Furthermore, the expression pattern of chIFITM5 diverged between the two breeds, the heart of Kadaknath chickens showed highest (10.45 folds). The study discovered that breed-specific genetic variants within these genes present a potential pathway for selection and breeding to improve disease resistance in chicken. The observed genetic variation among chicken populations highlights the critical importance of these variants in reinforcing virus resistance, exhibiting applicability across a wide range of breeds.

Simple Summary: Aseel and Kadaknath are indigenous chicken breeds in India. Due to their distinctiveness, these two breeds are becoming more important. Aseel has a reputation for cockfighting and having high-quality meat. The black flesh of Kadaknath is famous, and it is mostly raised for its meat and eggs. Both breeds have heat and disease tolerances. The chicken interferon-inducible transmembrane protein (chIFITM) genes function by preventing the entry of viruses into host cells, inhibiting viral replication, and controlling the viral load. This research was conducted to ascertain the level of chIFITM gene expression against the Newcastle disease virus (NDV) in chicken embryo fibroblast cells of both breeds. There are five members of the chIFITM gene family: chIFITM1, chIFITM2, chIFITM3, chIFITM5, and chIFITM10. chIFITM1, 2, and 3 have immune-related activity; as a result, these three are referred to as immune-related IFITM (IR-IFITM). All the chIFITM genes were shown to be highly expressed in the CEF cells of both breeds during our investigation. The Kadaknath CEF cells had a significantly low viral load and a high quantity of mRNAs for the chIFITM genes when the breeds were compared. Disease investigation was made in a native chicken farm with 150 numbers of 12 weeks old Aseel chickens kept in Iruvelpattu village, Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu. Clinical signs like dullness, inappetance, brownish diarrhoea in few birds and mortality of 5 birds within a span of 3 days were reported (3.33%). Necropsy examination of dead birds revealed that emaciated carcass, soiling of vent with reddish droppings, swelling of small intestine with haemorrhages and also duodenum with cylindrical worms. Examination of small intestinal contents and mucosal scrapings confirmed numerous unsporulated oocysts of Eimeria sp. and eggs of Ascaridia galli. The adult roundworms were identified as Ascaridia galli. Examination of droppings from live birds also confirmed of Eimeria (23.33%) and Ascaridia galli eggs (26.66%). Based on the lesions produced in mid-small intestine, oocysts morphometry and sporulation time involved, it was identified as Eimeria necatrix. The present study reports for concurrent parasitic infections of Eimeria necatrix and Ascaridia galli and importance of specific treatment and deworming for endoparasites in native chickens.

Based on the history and clinical signs, a 1-year-old Aseel breed domestic fowl reared in backyard farming was diagnosed with crop impaction. An ingluviotomy was performed, and the impacted grass and plastic materials were removed. This case was followed up for 2 months and no complications were reported. The data on 837 birds representing five crosses (Aseel x PD-1, Aseel x PD-2, Aseel x PD-6, Aseel x PB-1 and Aseel x PB-2) survived up to 12 weeks of age were evaluated for various growth, meat quality, meat composition, sensory attributes and carcass traits as an alternative to native chicken farming. Body weights and shank lengths significantly (P≤0.05) differed at all ages. Aseel crosses with coloured broiler lines (PB-1 and PB-2) had significantly (P≤0.05) higher body weights while Aseel x PD-1 cross recorded higher shank length at all ages. The fat and ash proportion varied significantly (P≤0.05) among the crosses. The pH values of the breast meat ranged 5.89 to 6.29. The Shear force values (SFV) and Hydroxyproline (HP) concentration differed significantly (P≤0.05) among the crosses. Meat colour differed significantly (P≤0.05) with respect to yellowness (b*) and red (a*) colouration. The proportion of legs, wings, back, neck, meat and bone significantly (P≤0.05) differed among the crosses. The cluster analysis of means of all traits revealed that least distance exists between Aseel x PD-1 and Aseel x PD-6. The study concludes that, Aseel x PD-1 and Aseel x PD-6 crosses may be a viable and suitable alternative for native chicken farming.

ABSTRACT: Egg quality parameters are very crucial for the egg industry as egg configuration affects grading, price, hatchability, chick weight, and consumer preference. Current study was undertaken to assess and compare the egg quality parameters in 2 important Indian breeds Aseel and Kadaknath reared under backyard system. Different parameters of external and internal egg quality were measured. Biochemical parameters of egg yolk estimated were egg yolk cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), and triacylglycerol. Means for external characters of Aseel eggs viz., egg weight, egg length, egg width, shape index, shell weight, shell thickness, and shell ratio were 41.7 g, 5.16 cm, 3.85 cm, 74.75%, 4.65 g, 0.35 mm, and 11.23%, and corresponding values for Kadaknath eggs were 40.59 g, 5.13 cm, 3.79 cm, 74.02%, 4.28 g, 0.34 mm, and 10.61%, respectively. Average albumin length, width, height, and albumin index were 83.73 mm, 65.4 mm, 6.02 mm, and 9.26% for Aseel eggs and 82.27 mm, 64.80 mm, 5.52 mm and 8.52% for Kadaknath eggs, respectively. Mean values for yolk length, width, height and yolk index were 43.32 mm, 40.10 mm, 15.30 mm, and 38.30% in Aseel and 42.15 mm, 38.97 mm, 14.26 mm and 36.66% in Kadaknath breed, respectively. Mean values for egg yolk cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triacylglycerol were estimated as 9.38, 1.74, 0.17, and 1.94 mg/g in Aseel eggs and 8.38, 1.84, 0.11, and 1.76 mg/g in Kadaknath eggs, respectively. Biochemical analysis revealed that egg yolk quality of Kadaknath eggs was comparatively better than Aseel eggs.

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of thermal conditioning on serum levels of Triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4) and corticosterone (CORT) in four different chicken strains namely Aseel, Naked Neck, Assel × Nandanam chicken-4 and Naked Neck × Nandanam Broiler-3. Chicks were divided into control (C; ambient temperature 28±1°C) and heat exposed groups (H; 39±1°C for 2 hours; 0-2 and 5-6 weeks of age). At 12th week, control group were divided into two groups, i.e. unexposed control (C) and exposed control (CE). Birds from H group (HE) and CE group were thermally challenged at 39±1°C for 4 hours daily on 12th week. On 42nd and 84th day, blood was withdrawn from each group, serum separated and processed for T3, T4 and CORT. The results indicated that the thermal conditioning had significantly decreased T3, T4 and increased CORT levels, irrespective of strains. At thermal challenge, a drastic drop in CORT level and improvement in thyroid hormone levels were noticed in the preconditioned birds. From present study, it was concluded that, the birds are able to withstand the heat stress effect which was indicated by drop in CORT level.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed at evaluating the effects of dietary selenium (Se) supplementation on egg morphometric and quality traits in Aseel chicken. In total, 84 adult molted Aseel hens, comprising 4 varieties (Lakha, Mushki, Peshawari, and Mianwali), were divided into 3 dietary treatments (organic at 0.30 ppm, inorganic at 0.30 ppm, and without selenium) with 7 replicates (1 bird in each) under randomized complete block design. Data were analyzed using factorial ANOVA and means were compared using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. The results indicated greater egg length in Mushki and Mianwali, lower egg breadth in Lakha, the highest (p≤0.05) egg volume and surface area in Mianwali, and higher shape index in Lakha and Peshawari. Lakha had the highest Haugh unit and lower eggshell thickness with and without membrane than the other three varieties. Interaction of Se sources and Aseel varieties exhibited the highest (p≤0.05) egg volume and surface area in Mianwali variety when fed on organic Se supplemented diet. Similarly, the interaction showed the highest eggshell thickness with membrane in Peshawari and without membrane in Mianwali when fed on inorganic Se supplemented diet. From the findings, it can be concluded that egg physical characteristics of Mianwali variety hens can be improved by the supplementation of Se-enriched yeast, as an organic Se source, in the diet.

Background and Aim: Newcastle disease (ND) is considered one of the most important poultry diseases with chicken morbidity and mortality rates up to 100%. Current vaccination programs allow the use of live attenuated vaccines in the field to protect against the disease, which alone is inefficient and requires repeat booster doses. Toll-like receptor agonists (e.g., lipopolysaccharide [LPS]) as adjuvants are the ones, most extensively studied and have shown to be very promising in delivering a robust balanced immune response. In the present study, we have evaluated the potential of LPS to elicit a strong immune response with respect to the elicitation of both Th1 (cell-mediated) and Th2 (humoral) immune arms. Materials and Methods: A total of 72 apparently healthy 1-day-old indigenous unvaccinated chicks were randomly divided into six experimental Groups A to F (n=12). At 8-week of age chicks in Group A, C, and E were vaccinated with live attenuated La Sota strain ND vaccine along with LPS, bovine serum albumin, and normal saline solution, respectively, and those in Group B, D, and E were kept separately without vaccination. Sampling was done on days 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 35, and 60 after vaccination. After vaccination and respective adjuvant application, Th1 and Th2 cytokine expression were measured in mRNA of both blood and tissue samples. Results: The results were validated by, hemagglutination inhibition and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay tests, to check for the humoral as well as cell-mediated immune response in blood serum levels. The results showed an increase in mRNA expression of the Th1 biased cytokines in Group A (LPS+NDV) as compared to the control groups. Similar mRNA expression pattern was seen in blood as well as tissue samples. Validation of results also indicates an increase in Cell-mediated Immunity as well as a humoral immune response in Group A (LPS+NDV). Conclusion: The results of the study provided enough evidence to consider LPS as a potential vaccine adjuvants candidate against ND in chicken.

Aseel is amongst the most vital date variety of Pakistan. Beside its nutritional value, it also got remedial uses therefore for the first time different in-vitro bioassays were performed to assess its medicinal value. Aqueous (DFAE) and ethanol (DFEE) extracts of fresh Aseel dates were used for the purpose. Microplate alamar blue assay was done for antibacterial activity, Brine shrimp lethality test for cytotoxicity and MTT assays with different cancer cell lines were used for anti-cancer activity. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity were also evaluated by free radical scavenging bioassay and chemiluminescence technique. Alamar blue assay of both extracts exhibited weak antibacterial activity against E.coli, S, flexenari and S. aureus. Brine shrimp lethality revealed absence of cytotoxicity at 1000µg/mL concentration. DFEE 50 µg/mL was effective against MCF-7,MDA-MB-231, PC3, 3T3 and Hela cancer cell lines showing 17.59%, 20.90%, 37.60%, 22.35% and 36.70% inhibition whereas DFAE exhibits 20.46%, 30.86%, 15.21%, 29.70% and 16.40% inhibition respectively. Similarly both extracts also showed varying degree of anti-oxidant and antiinflammatory activity against standard drug. The results are suggestive of weak bioactivity of Aseel date extracts might because of reduced potency however further studies are required for better understanding of observed results and separation of active ingredients from Aseel dates. ABSTRACT Present study evaluated carcass and meat quality attributes of broilers, broiler breeders and Aseel chickens. Sixty birds from each chicken genotype (broiler, broiler breeder and Aseel chickens; five-wk-old broilers and 60-wk-old Aseel chickens and broiler breeders) were evaluated. Birds were maintained under similar environment for 21 days, and then slaughtered to analyze their carcass qualitative and organoleptic characteristics. Backyard poultry production plays a vital role in providing animal protein at affordable and sustainable manner. Growth and production potential of indigenous chicken need to be improved through selective breeding to enhance the productivity of backyard farming. PD-4 birds (Aseel, indigenous breed) were subjected to selection for higher body weight over eight generations. Study investigated effect of selection on the performance of PD-4 birds with respect to economic traits. There was significant improvement in body weight and shank length at 8 weeks of age. Egg production up to 40 weeks had improved by 19.1 eggs. Egg weight at 28, 32, 36 and 40 weeks of age improved by 0.8, 1.3, 1.7 and 1.3 g respectively. Age at sexual maturity had declined by 14.2 days. There was no significant change in fertility and hatchability traits. Survivors’ egg production up to 72 weeks of age was 156.5±2.79 eggs while hen day and hen housed egg production were 144.9 and 137.5 eggs respectively. Egg weight consistently improved from 35.13 g at age at first egg to 48.07 g at 40 weeks and to 49.63 g at 72 weeks of age. The study demonstrated that indigenous chickens could be improved for body weight and egg production without affecting other economic traits and improved PD-4 variety has the potential to be used as improved dual purpose indigenous chicken variety for low input backyard poultry farming.

Gut microbiota plays an important role in the health and performance of the host. Characterizations of gut microbiota, core microbiomes, and microbial networks in different chicken breeds are expected to provide clues for pathogen exclusion, improving performance or feed efficiency. Here, we characterized the gut microbiota of “finishing” chickens (at the end of production life) of indigenous Indian Nicobari, Ghagus, and Aseel breeds, originating from the Nicobari island, coastal India, and the Indian mainland, respectively, as well as a global commercial broiler line, VenCobb 400, using 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing. We found that diversity, as well as richness of microbiota, was higher in indigenous breeds than in the broiler line. Beta diversity analysis indicated the highest overlap between Ghagus and Nicobari breeds and a very low overlap between the broiler line and all indigenous breeds. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) revealed 82 breed- or line-specific phylotype operational taxonomic unit (OTU) level biomarkers. We confirm the presence of breed specific and across-breed core microbiomes. Additionally, we show the existence of breed specific complex microbial networks in all groups. This study provides the first (and comprehensive) insight into the gut microbiota of three indigenous breeds and one commercial broiler line of chickens reared without antimicrobials, and underscores the need to study microbial diversity in other indigenous breeds.

The present study was planned to explore the effects of different selenium-supplemented diets on production performance in 4 varieties of Aseel chicken, including Lakha (LK), Mushki (MS), Peshawari (PW), and Mianwali (MW). The selenium (Se) from Se-enriched yeast (SY) and sodium selenite (SS) was supplemented into a corn-soybean meal basal diet at 0.3 mg/kg, whereas control diet had no supplemental Se. In total, 84 adult molted Aseel hens (50 wk old), 21 from each variety, were randomly assigned to 12 treatment groups in a 3 × 4 factorial arrangement of 3 Se diets (organic, inorganic, and control) and 4 Aseel varieties (LK, MS, PW, and MW), under a randomized complete block design (RCBD). Each treatment had 7 replicates with individual hens per replicate. Feed intake (FI), body weight (BW), egg production (EP), egg weight (EW), egg mass (EM), FCR/dozen eggs, and FCR/kg egg mass parameters were evaluated. The results indicated that the hens fed organic Se-supplemented diet showed greater (P < 0.05) EP and EM, and improved (P < 0.05) FCR/dozen eggs and FCR/kg egg mass compared with those fed inorganic and without Se. Among varieties, MW hens showed greater (P < 0.05) BW and produced heavier (P < 0.05) eggs, whereas PW hens showed improved (P < 0.05) FCR/dozen eggs compared with those of other Aseel varieties. A total of 300 day-old, unsexed, Aseel native chicken belonging to single hatch were utilized for this study. The treatment groups were fed with diets containing ghee residue at different inclusion levels, i.e. 0% (T1-control), 5% (T2), 10% (T3) and 15% (T4). Biological experiment revealed that there was significant difference in body weight and body weight gain and feed conversion ratio and no significant difference was observed in feed consumption and livability. Background and Aim: Newcastle disease (ND) is considered one of the most important poultry diseases with chicken morbidity and mortality rates up to 100%. Current vaccination programs allow the use of live attenuated vaccines in the field to protect against the disease, which alone is inefficient and requires repeat booster doses. Toll-like receptor agonists (e.g., lipopolysaccharide [LPS]) as adjuvants are the ones, most extensively studied and have shown to be very promising in delivering a robust balanced immune response. In the present study, we have evaluated the potential of LPS to elicit a strong immune response with respect to the elicitation of both Th1 (cell-mediated) and Th2 (humoral) immune arms. Materials and Methods: A total of 72 apparently healthy 1-day-old indigenous unvaccinated chicks were randomly divided into six experimental Groups A to F (n=12). At 8-week of age chicks in Group A, C, and E were vaccinated with live attenuated La Sota strain ND vaccine along with LPS, bovine serum albumin, and normal saline solution, respectively, and those in Group B, D, and E were kept separately without vaccination. Sampling was done on days 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 35, and 60 after vaccination. After vaccination and respective adjuvant application, Th1 and Th2 cytokine expression were measured in mRNA of both blood and tissue samples. Results: The results were validated by, hemagglutination inhibition and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay tests, to check for the humoral as well as cell-mediated immune response in blood serum levels. The results showed an increase in mRNA expression of the Th1 biased cytokines in Group A (LPS+NDV) as compared to the control groups. Similar mRNA expression pattern was seen in blood as well as tissue samples. Validation of results also indicates an increase in Cell-mediated Immunity as well as a humoral immune response in Group A (LPS+NDV). Aseel is an important native chicken breed of India, known for its martial qualities (aggressive fighting abilities), pugnacity, and majestic gait. The aim of the study is to conserve and characterize the Aseel germplasm, which is considered to be endangered. The birds were maintained on deep litter under a simulated backyard type of housing having night shelter and a free-range area. A total of 313 chicks produced in the second generation from the flock collected from native tract in Andhra Pradesh was characterized for morphological, growth, production, and meat quality parameters. Aseel birds were characterized by multicolored plumage (predominantly dark brown, black, golden, etc.) with solid feather patterns and normal distribution. Ear lobes were red (92%) and small in size, while 98% of the birds had red colored pea combs with variations in intensity of color. The shank color was yellow in the majority (65%) of the birds. The skin color was white (98%) with pinkish red coloration on exposed body parts, especially on the breast. The fertility and hatchability on total eggs were 67.2 and 41.4%, respectively. Cocks were heavier (P ≤ 0.05) with distinct sexual dimorphism in Aseel. The body weight of hens and cocks was 1,704.4 ± 23.2 and 2,702.5 ± 28.1 g at 40 wk and 2,333.7 ± 26.1 and 3,793.7 ± 20.8 g at 72 wk of age, respectively. The age at sexual maturity was 214.0 ± 6.0 days. The egg production up to 40, 52, and 64 wk of age was 18.0 ± 1, 30.0 ± 2.0, and 47 ± 3 eggs, respectively. The annual egg production (72 wk) was 64 ± 6 eggs. The proximate composition of breast muscle was; protein 21.5 ± 0.5%, fat 3.4 ± 0.1%, ash 2.0 ± 0.1%, and moisture 73.3 ± 0.5%. The pH of breast muscle was 6.0 ± 0.03 and the cholesterol content was 72.5 ± 6.7 mg/100 g. A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary selenium (Se) sources (organic and inorganic Se at 0.30 ppm and basal diet at 0 ppm level of supplemented Se) on hatching traits in four varieties of Aseel chicken, Lakha, Mushki, Peshawari, and Mianwali. In total, 84 adult molted hens (50 wk old), 21 from each variety, were randomly assigned to 12 treatment groups in a 3 (Se diets) x 4 (Aseel varieties) factorial arrangement under a randomized complete block design. Each treatment was replicated 7 times with individual hens in each. Settable egg, fertility, hatch of fertile eggs, hatchability, A-grade chick, and embryonic mortality parameters were evaluated. The results indicated that the birds fed an organic Se supplemented diet had greater (P < 0.05) settable eggs, fertility, hatch of fertile eggs, hatchability, and A-grade chicks and reduced embryonic mortality than those fed inorganic or no Se. Among varieties, Mushki had lower (P < 0.05) fertility, hatch of fertile eggs, hatchability, and A-grade chicks than rest of three varieties. Interaction of Se sources and varieties indicated that dietary organic Se supplementation improved (P < 0.05) hatch of fertile eggs in Peshawari and Mianwali, whereas hatchability only in Peshawari variety and reduced embryonic mortality in Mianwali. The study aimed to investigate immunocompetence in Aseel, Kadaknath and IWH line of White Leghorn chicken maintained at this institute. Five to six weeks aged pedigreed 75, 55 and 100 chicks progenies of 8, 8 and 20 sires of these respective genotypes were immunized against 1% (v/v) SRBC suspension. Five dpi sera were analyzed through haemagglutination (HA) test to assess humoral immune response. Serum lysozyme and immunoglobulin- G (IgG) concentrations were assessed through agarose lysoplate and single radial immunodiffusion assay, respectively. The data were analyzed by least squares analysis of variance. The estimated corresponding means of HA titre, serum lysozyme and serum IgG concentrations were 10.84±0.18, 21.28±0.78 μg/ml and 24.23±2.05 μg/ μl in Aseel, 11.62±0.21, 16.91±0.93 μg/ml and 15.70±2.44 μg/μl in Kadaknath, and 11.94±0.15, 9.42±0.68 μg/ml and 10.27±1.79 μg/μl in IWH line of White Leghorn chicken. The estimates significantly varied among the three genotypes. The HA titre mean was higher in IWH line of WLH followed by Kadaknath and Aseel chicken; whereas serum lysozyme and serum IgG concentration means were higher in Aseel followed by Kadaknath and IWH line. Sire within genotype or sire and sex of the birds had nonsignificant effect on the traits. This information could be important while selecting birds for improvement in general immune responsiveness and the high immunocompetence in Aseel and Kadaknath might be exploited by their selective introgression in high productive but less immunocompetent chicken germplasms. Aseel is an indigenous breed of poultry recognized for its majestic gait and cock fighting.Southern part of Chhattisgarh is its breeding tract. Vanaraja is a crossbreed being popularized by the Department of Animal Husbandary (C.G.) to improve the livelihood of tribal peoples.Ductus deferens is part of reproductive system which plays an important role in transportation of spermatozoa and fertilization. In the present study, 10 birds of two age group viz. 5 months (grower) and 13 months (adult) of each breed were used. Ductus deferens was collected,processed and sections were stained for demonstration of normal histological structure, collagen fibers, elastic fibers, reticular fibers, carbohydrates and mucopolysaccharides. The height of epithelium, height of mucosal folds at different segments, number of mucosal folds per transverse section, thickness of wall excluding mucosal folds, maximum and minimum diameter of ductus deferens was significantly higher in growers and adults of Vanaraja than Aseel. The density of connective tissue fibers, PAS activity and AB-PAS activity was higher in both groups of Vanaraja compared to Aseel.

Background: Foreign body in esophagus in birds is rarely reported in literature. Most common site of foreign body in birds is proventriculus and ventriculus. The purpose of this study is to discuss the diagnosis of a large sharp foreign body in the distal third of the neck by plain radiography and its retrieval through esophagotomy and subsequent survival of the fowl. Case description: An Aseel breed of domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus) was referred to the surgery department with a history of swelling in the neck and subsequent anorexia since 24 h, but normal water intake. Radiological examination revealed a large fish bone in esophagus. Because of the sharp edges of the foreign body esophagotomy was performed rather than per os (po) retrieval or milking of the foreign body into the crop and performing an ingluviotomy. Findings/treatment and outcome: Esophagotomy was performed under local infiltration using a diluted solution of lignocaine. Fish bone pieces were retrieved from the esophagus of the fowl. The esophagotomy incision was closed in two layers using polyglactin 910 no: 3-0. Postoperatively, the owner was advised to administer Enrofloxacin po at 10 mg/kg body weight (BW)/day for seven days and Tramadol (10 mg/kg BW, BID) for three days in water. This case was followed up for 8 months. There were no complications noticed by the owner. Conclusion: It could be concluded that prompt intervention and surgical management may be necessary for retrieval of sharp esophageal foreign bodies lodged in the distal cervical esophagus of domestic fowl. Indian Aseel chicken (Gallus gallus) is traditionally used as a favorite game bird all over the world. Bird fighting communities of Pakistan are the major source of its conservation and there are at least four distinctively recognized varieties of Aseel chicken based upon selective breeding, geographical location and color patterns. A pioneering study on genetic diversity of these varieties namely Lakha (n=17), Mushki (n=19), Mianwali (n=19) and Peshawari (n=13) was undertaken using FAO recommended 10 microsatellite loci. A total of 91 alleles were observed in 4 varieties of Aseel chicken with an average of 9.1 alleles per locus. Number of alleles varied between 4 to 8 in Lakha, 4 to 9 in Mushki, 3 to 10 in Mianwali and 3 to 7 in Pashawari. Mean polymorphic information content values were 0.67, 0.69, 0.71 and 0.65 in individual varieties, respectively. Mean observed and expected heterozygosity index values of 0.3941 and 0.7376 were recorded in Lakha, 0.4105 and 0.7468 for Mushki, 0.4105 and 0.7718 Mianwali and 0.3692 and 0.7191 for Peshawari. Mean Fixation index (Fst) value was calculated as 0.1264. Highest Nei’s standard genetic distance (Ds) value of 1.0735 was observed between Mushki and Peshawari, whereas its value was minimum (0.3533) between Lakha and Mushki. This report describes genetic diversity of Aseel chicken in Pakistan and provides foundation data to initiate extensive and more comprehensive studies on indigenous chicken genetic resource conservation and its future utilization in commercial breeding programs.

Birds (10) of 2 age group, viz. 5 months (grower) and 13 months (adult) of Aseel and Vanaraja breeds of poultry were used. The thickness of tunica albuginea, maximum and minimum diameter of seminiferous tubules, diameter of primary spermatocytes and number of sustentacular cells or Sertoli cells per seminiferous tubule were significantly higher in growers and adults of Vanaraja than Aseel whereas, number of interstitial cells per field were significantly higher in growers and adults of Aseel than Vanaraja. The density of connective tissue fibers, PAS activity and AB-PAS activity was more in both groups of Vanaraja than Aseel.

The present study was conducted to investigate the growth performance in four varieties of native Aseel Chicken. For this purpose, 96 day-old Aseel chicks, 24 each of 4 different varieties viz. Peshawari, Mianwali, Mushki and Lakha were maintained at Indigenous Chicken Genetic Resource Center, Department Poultry Production, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore Ravi Campus, Pattoki. The experimental birds were kept in cages and placed in a well-ventilated open sided poultry house under similar management conditions up to 15 weeks of age. The birds had free access to clean and fresh drinking water through drinking nipples provided natural day light and were fed a broiler ration ad libitum according to NRC standards. Data were analyzed by ANOVA technique and means were compared by using DMR Test. The results showed that the average body weight (g) in four varieties of Aseel differed significantly {P<0.05) at 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15 weeks of age. Weekly body weight gain (g) in four varieties of Aseel differed significantly (P<0.05) at 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th and 10th weeks of age. Weekly times of weight gain differed significantly (p<0.05) at 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th and 10th weeks of age. FCR in four varieties of Aseel differed significantly (P<0.05) at 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th weeks of age. The weekly mean feed intake (g) in four varieties of Aseel differed significantly (P<0.05) during the entire experimental period. Based on the findings of this study it may be stated that Mushki variety of Aseel exhibited better growth rate and FCR than three other varieties, therefore, it may be considered for future breeding programs. The present study aimed to estimate serological immune response against Newcastle disease vaccine investigating 70 Aseel, 75 Kadaknath and 85 White Leghorn chicks. The day-old chicks were vaccinated with a dose of 106.5 EID50 of RDF1 strain through occulo-nasal route followed by a booster dose on 28th day. The sera collected on 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 days post-immunization (dpi) were used to measure antibody titres through haemagglutination inhibition test. The data were analyzed by analysis of variance using SPSS 16.0 statistical software. The corresponding mean antibody titre (log2) estimates were 8.10±0.22, 7.89±0.18, 7.92±0.16, 8.29±0.14, 8.40±0.16 and 8.94±0.19 in Aseel, 7.32±0.16, 7.74±0.13, 7.56±0.13, 7.86±0.17, 8.43±0.17 and 9.14±0.16 in Kadaknath, and 8.48±0.28, 8.02±0.31, 8.29±0.33, 8.14±0.30, 7.68±0.29 and 7.73±0.29 in White Leghorn chicken. The estimates significantly varied among different dpi in Aseel and Kadaknath chicken except White Leghorn. Aseel and Kadaknath chicken demonstrated gradual increasing trend and higher means of antibody titres for longer periods of dpi and achieved the highest at 42 dpi, whereas White Leghorn chicken showed an irregular trend, the highest titre being observed at 7 dpi. Again the 3 chicken genotypes significantly varied in antibody titres at 7, 35 and 42 dpi; White Leghorn chicken demonstrated the highest antibody titre at 7 dpi, while Kadaknath chicken showed the highest titre at 35 and 42 dpi. The higher and longer immune responsive Aseel and Kadaknath chicken might be utilized for selective introgression of their candidate genes in high productive chicken germplasm with less NDV response. The article presents a study concerning the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) polymorphism in Mx1 gene of chicken which has been determined using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and nucleotide sequencing. The study has involved 152 chickens of the Aseel breed from the Poultry Breeding Complex at Anand Agricultural University in India. Several findings are discussed, one is percentage similarity between alleles.

The present study was conducted to characterize 2 important native chicken breeds from India and compare them on growth, .production, egg and semen quality, and welfare traits. The Aseel breed showed (P < 0.001) higher BW at different ages; higher shank, radius, and toe lengths at 40 wk of age; and greater egg weights at 28, 32, and 40 wk of age than did the Kadaknath breed. The Kadaknath breed reached sexual maturity at an early age, and it had higher 40-wk egg production (P < 0.001). Higher egg specific gravity (P < 0.05) and higher albumen (P < 0.00 1) and shell (P < 0.009) percentages in the Kadaknath were observed, whereas the Aseel breed had a higher yolk index (P < 0.004), higher yolk percentage (P < 0.001), and higher yolk-to-albumen ratio (P < 0.001). Concentration of sperm (P < 0.01), live sperm counts (P < 0.05), and semen appearance scores (P < 0.05) were higher in the Aseel breed than in the Kadaknath breed. The Aseel breed showed a greater incidence of feather-pecking behavior under floor rearing, and this was negligible or mild in the Kadaknath breed. Broodiness under cage rearing was observed (8.42%) in the Aseel breed. With regard to welfare traits, male Aseel birds had a significantly shorter (P < 0.05) duration of tonic immobility (TI) than did male Kadaknath birds. Furthermore, male Aseel birds had a shorter (P < 0.001) duration of TI than did female Aseel birds, whereas female Aseel birds had a longer (P < 0.05) duration of TI than did female and male Kadaknath birds. From this study, it was concluded that the breeds differed on various growth, production, egg and semen quality, and behavioral traits, but not on welfare traits, although female Aseel birds exhibited a greater fear response. Egg quality parameters are very crucial for the egg industry as egg configuration affects grading, price, hatchability, chick weight, and consumer preference. Current study was undertaken to assess and compare the egg quality parameters in 2 important Indian breeds Aseel and Kadaknath reared under backyard system. Different parameters of external and internal egg quality were measured. Biochemical parameters of egg yolk estimated were egg yolk cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), and triacylglycerol. Means for external characters of Aseel eggs viz., egg weight, egg length, egg width, shape index, shell weight, shell thickness, and shell ratio were 41.7 g, 5.16 cm, 3.85 cm, 74.75%, 4.65 g, 0.35 mm, and 11.23%, and corresponding values for Kadaknath eggs were 40.59 g, 5.13 cm, 3.79 cm, 74.02%, 4.28 g, 0.34 mm, and 10.61%, respectively. Average albumin length, width, height, and albumin index were 83.73 mm, 65.4 mm, 6.02 mm, and 9.26% for Aseel eggs and 82.27 mm, 64.80 mm, 5.52 mm and 8.52% for Kadaknath eggs, respectively. Mean values for yolk length, width, height and yolk index were 43.32 mm, 40.10 mm, 15.30 mm, and 38.30% in Aseel and 42.15 mm, 38.97 mm, 14.26 mm and 36.66% in Kadaknath breed, respectively. Mean values for egg yolk cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triacylglycerol were estimated as 9.38, 1.74, 0.17, and 1.94 mg/g in Aseel eggs and 8.38, 1.84, 0.11, and 1.76 mg/g in Kadaknath eggs, respectively. Tissue sampling procedures are described for the acquisition of testicular histomorphometrical observations.
