Abstract

The article focuses on a study on the role of the microsporidian Paranucleospora theridion (P. theridion) in the development of diseases in farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in Norway. Salmo salar production in the country has been compromised by the development of several diseases such as proliferative gill inflammation (PGI), pancreas disease (PD) and heart and skeletal muscle inflammation. One finding shows that average P. theridion levels are higher in fishes with PGI diagnosis. It is concluded that P. theridion serves as an important agent of PGI.
