We examined size-related and seasonal changes in the diet of the peacock bass Cichla kelberi in a tropical lowland reservoir in southeastern Brazil over three hydro-climatic seasons: summer (high rainfall and temperature), winter (low rainfall and temperature), and late spring (increasing rainfall and temperature) during two years (2006-2007). The tested hypothesis is that this non-native predator fish changes diet during the subadult and adult phases and among seasons to adapt in new colonized environment. Fishes of the families Clupeidae (Platanichthys platana), Characidae (Astyanax spp.) and Cichlidae (Cichla kelberi) were the most important food items, followed by insects of the order Odonata. Cannibalism was also recorded for the largest individuals. A significant size-related change in diet was found with the smallest individuals (Total Length, TL < 20 cm) preying mainly on fishes, whereas the larger individuals (TL > 30 cm) preyed mainly on Odonata. The niche breadth increased during growth, with the largest individuals having a diet more evenly distributed among the available resources. No significant seasonal differences in diet composition were found, but stomachs with higher degree of volume occupied by food were more frequent in late spring than in summer. Conversely, the highest niche breadth was found during the summer compared to the other seasons. Together, these observations suggest an efficient use of the available resources by this top predator in this new colonized system. Resumo: Foram examinadas as mudanças sazonais na dieta e relacionadas ao tamanho para o tucunaré Cichla kelberi em um reservatório tropical de várzeas no Sudeste do Brasil em três ciclos hidrológicos: verão (elevadas precipitações e temperaturas), inverno (baixas precipitações e temperaturas), e final da primavera (aumentos das precipitações e temperaturas) durante dois anos (2006-2007). A hipótese testada é que este peixe predador não-nativo muda a dieta durante as fases adulta e subadulta e entre as estações do ano para se adaptar neste novo ambiente colonizado. Peixes das famílias Clupeidae (Platanichthys platana), (Characidae (Astyanax spp.) e Cichlidae (Cichla kelberi) foram os itens alimentares mais importantes, seguidos por insetos da ordem Odonata. O canibalismo também foi registrado para os maiores indivíduos. Mudanças significativas na dieta foram relacionadas ao tamanho, com os indivíduos menores (Comprimento Total, CT 20 cm) se alimentaram principalmente de Odonata. A amplitude de nicho aumentou ao longo do crescimento, com indivíduos de maior porte tendo dieta mais uniformemente distribuída entre os recursos disponíveis. Nenhuma diferença significativa na composição da dieta foi encontrada entre as estações do ano, mas estômagos com maiores volumes ocupados pelo alimento foram mais frequentes no fim da primavera e menos frequentes no verão. Por outro lado, a maior amplitude de nicho foi encontrada no verão comparada com as outras estações, o que indica o uso mais uniforme dos diversos recursos disponíveis. Juntas, estas observações sugerem uma utilização eficiente dos recursos disponíveis por esta espécie predadora de topo neste novo sistema colonizado.

The enzymatic activities involved in the digestion of proteins and carbohydrates were compared among three organs of the digestive track of two Siluriformes fish species, and between two areas: a reservoir, and an area downriver of it. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that the digestive organs of species with varied feeding habits have different enzymatic activities, and that the enzymatic activity differs among seasons and environmental conditions. The iliophagous/herbivorous species Hypostomus auroguttatus Kner, 1854 had higher trypsin-like, chymotrypsin-like peptidase and β-glucosidase activity in the intestine when compared with the omnivorous species Pimelodus maculatus Lacepède, 1803, whereas the latter had more hepatic trypsin-like activity than the former. The peak of activity of the three enzymes in H. auroguttatus was recorded in the winter and spring. On the other hand, P. maculatus tended to have the more prominent peptidase and β-glucosidase activity in the summer, and the smallest in the winter. The intestine of H. auroguttatus had higher enzymatic (trypsin, chymotrypsin and β-glucosidase) activity than the stomach and the liver. For P. maculatus, the highest β-glucosidase activity was found in the liver. The enzymatic activity of H. aurogutattus did not differ between lotic and lentic systems, whereas P. maculatus had comparatively higher stomach and hepatic trypsin levels and hepatic chymotrypsin-like activities in the reservoir than down in the river. These findings indicate that, in H. auroguttatus, most digestive activity occurs in the intestine, which is long and adapted for the digestion of bottom-river vegetable matter and detritus. The seasons and the type of the system (lentic vs. lotic) seem to affect the enzymatic activity for these two species differently, a likely consequence of their different lifestyles.

A distribuição e abundância da ictiofauna na zona de arrebentação de praias arenosas do Município do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, foram estudadas objetivando detectar variações sazonais ou influências do grau de exposição na estrutura da comunidade de peixes jovens. Amostras trimestrais foram realizadas em 10 praias sendo agrupadas de acordo com o nível de exposição (abrigada, exposta e muito exposta), entre Janeiro e Novembro de 2004, com os arrastos tendo sido efetuados perpendiculares à linha de costa. Foram registrados 6.464 peixes, distribuídos em 38 espécies e 22 famílias, com o predomínio de formas juvenis ou de pequeno porte. As famílias Clupeidae, Carangidae e Sciaenidae representaram 79% do número total de indivíduos e 61% da biomassa total. As espécies de maior participação na biomassa, representando 81% do peso total, foram Harengula clupeola (36%), Orthopristis ruber (14%), Mugil liza (10%), Trachinotus goodei (8%), Trachinotus carolinus (7%) e Umbrina coroides (6%). Três espécies apresentaram maior abundância relativa, tendo cada uma, contribuído acima de 10% do número total (Harengula clupeola, Umbrina coroides e Trachinotus carolinus), mas somente T. carolinus apresentou um padrão bem definido, sendo mais abundante nas zonas abrigadas. As maiores CPUEs (número de indivíduos e biomassa) e o número de espécies foram encontradas nas zonas abrigadas (p < 0,05); sazonalmente nenhum destes indicadores apresentou diferença significativa (p > 0,05). O grau de exposição às ondas foi confirmado como um fator primário na estruturação da comunidade de peixes, com os locais mais abrigados provavelmente associados à maior disponibilidade de organismos planctônicos, menores turbulências e maior estabilidade do substrato. Distribution and abundance of the ichthyofauna of surf zone in sandy beaches of the Rio de Janeiro Municipality, Brazil, were studied aiming to detect seasonal and wave exposure gradient influences on the fish community structure. Quarterly samplings were performed at 10 sites according to the exposure degree (sheltered, exposed and very exposed) between January and November 2004, by using beach seines with hauls carried out perpendicular to the coastline. A total of 6,464 fishes in 38 species and 22 families were identified, mainly juveniles or small sized individuals. The families Clupeidae, Carangidae and Sciaenidae amounted to 79% of the total fish number and 61% of the total biomass. The following species amounted to 81% of the total weight were: Harengula clupeola (36%), Orthopristis ruber (14%), Mugil liza (10%), Trachinotus goodei (8%), Trachinotus carolinus (7%) and Umbrina coroides (6%). Three species showed the highest relative abundance, contributing each one more than 10% of the total number (Harengula clupeola, Umbrina coroides, e Trachinotus carolinus); but only T. carolinus showed a clear pattern, being more abundant in the sheltered beaches. The highest CPUEs (number of individuals and biomass) and number of species values occurred in the sheltered beaches (p < 0.05); none of these indicators showed significant seasonal differences (p > 0.05), although some trends were detected. The wave exposure degree was confirmed as a primary factor influencing the fish community structure, with sheltered sites probably associated to higher plankton availability, lesser turbulence and more substrate stability.

O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar as mudanças espaciais e ontogenéticas na dieta dos linguados Citharichthys spilopterus Günther, 1862 e Symphurus tessellatus (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) na Baía de Sepetiba. A área de estudos foi dividida em três zonas (interna, central e externa), onde foram realizados arrastos de fundo diurnos no período entre outubro/1998 a setembro/1999. C. spilopterus apresentou os maiores Índices de Importância Relativa (IIR) para Mysidacea (0.3359) e Amphipoda (0.0805), enquanto S. tessellatus apresentou maiores IIR para Amphipoda (0.7515) e Polychaeta (0.2586). A elevada porcentagem (67,61%) de estômagos vazios em S. tessellatus sugere atividade alimentar noturna. Os espécimes de menor tamanho (CT < 115 mm) de C. spilopterus alimentaram-se de Mysi-dacea na três zonas e os maiores (CT > 115 mm) de Polychaeta na zona interna, Gobiidae na central e Decapoda na externa. Os menores espécimes (CT < 155 mm) de S. tessellatus alimentaram-se principalmente de Amphipoda e os maiores (CT > 155 mm) de Polychaeta na zona interna, e de Amphipoda e Polychaeta na zona externa. Citharichthys spilopterus apresentou maior tamanho de boca e olho, e se alimentou de organismos associados à coluna da água próxima, tendendo a uma dieta mais especialista quando comparado com S. tessellatus que se alimentou de organismos sobre fundo. Apesar das duas espécies terem se alimentado basicamente de Crustacea, apresentaram baixa sobreposição alimentar com 0,1972, provavelmente podendo ser esta a estratégia de separação trófica desenvolvida para permitir a coexistência destas duas espécies relacionadas na Baía. The aim of this study was to assess the spatial and ontogenetic changes in diet of the flatfishes Citharichthys spilopterus Günther, 1862 and Symphurus tessellatus (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) in the Sepetiba Bay. The studied area was divided in three zones (inner, central e outer), where bottom trawls were performed during the day, from October 1998 to September 1999. Citharichthys spilopterus showed higher Indices of Relative Importance (IRI) for Mysidacea (0.3359) and Amphipoda (0.0805), while S. tessellatus showed the highest IRI for Amphipoda (0.7515) and Polychaeta (0.2586). The high percentage (67.61%) of empty guts in S. tessellatus suggests nocturnal feeding activity. Smaller sized individuals (TL < 115 mm) of C. spilopterus fed on Mysidacea in the three bay zones, while the larger sized (TL > 115 mm) fed on Polychaeta the inner zone, Gobiidae in the central and Decapoda in the outer. The smaller individuals (TL < 155 mm) of S. tessellatus fed mainly on Amphipoda while the largest (TL > 155 mm) fed on Polychaeta in the inner zone, and Amphipoda and Polychaeta in the outer zone. Citharichthys spilopterus, shows comparatively larger mouth and eye, and feed on organisms in the water column nearby, with a more specialized feeding habit, compared with S. tessellatus, which feed on organism on the substrate. Although the two species feed basically on Crustacea, they present low overlaping in the diet (0.197), and this is probably the trophic strategy developed to allow the coexistence of these two closely related species in the Bay.

The armored catfish Hypostomus affinis is a widespread Loricariidae fish in the Lajes Reservoir (22o42’-22o50’ S; 43o53’-44o05’ W), the largest lentic environment in the Rio de Janeiro State, but little is known about their reproductive biology. One hundred and twenty five females, captured from January 1996 to December 1997, were used to assess ovarian development (29 were used to determine fecundity). The oocyte distribution by size-diameter classes revealed the occurrence of two modes suggesting an asynchronic development of the ovaries. The total fecundity ranged from 1235 to 4304, averaging 2374. An exponential relationship between fecundity and total length was determined, and a direct linear relationship was found between fecundity and total weight and gonad weight. O cascudo Hypostomus affinis é uma espécie da família Loricariidae de ampla distribuição no Reservatório de Lajes (22º42’-22º50’S e 43º53’-44º05’W -RJ), o maior ambiente de água lênticas do estado do Rio de Janeiro, embora o conhecimento de sua biologia reprodutiva seja ainda escasso. Vinte e uma fêmeas capturadas entre janeiro de 1996 e dezembro de 1997 foram usadas, visando determinar a fecundidade. A distribuição por tamanho dos oocytes revelou a ocorrência de várias modas, sugerindo o desenvolvimento assincrônico dos ovários. A fecundidade total variou de 1235 a 4404, com média de 2374. Foi determinada uma relação exponencial entre fecundidade e comprimento total, e uma relação linear entre fecundidade e peso total, e entre fecundidade e peso das gônadas

The armored catfish Loricariichthys spixii (Steindachner, 1882) is the most abundant member of the Loricariidae family in the Lajes reservoir (22º42'-22º50'S 43º53' -44º05'W), the largest dam in the State of Rio de Janeiro State, but little is known about its biology and life cycle. A standardized fish sampling program in three zones of the reservoir (lower, middle and upper reaches), during three annual cycles: monthly in 1994/1996 and bi-monthly in 1997 was conducted out aiming to assess and add knowledge of the population structure of this species. Fishes were caught using gill nets (50 m long, 3 m depth and 25 to 45 mm meshes), amounting 160 samples. Water temperature, pH and transparency were registered at each sample to correlate with fish abundance. Loricariichthys spixii (Steindachner, 1882) was the most abundant fish species in the reservoir, contributing about on third of the total number and half of the total weight of the catches, but a decreasing trend was observed over the three year of the study, with number and biomass being significantly more abundant in 1994, followed by 1996 and 1997. There is no clear dependence between environmental parameters and fish occurrence, except for the coincidence of decreasing fish abundance and decreasing levels of water of the reservoir over the three year. Fishes were more abundant in the high and intermediate reaches of the reservoir, near to mouth of the tributaries. Seasonally, there is no clear variation in relative abundance. The success of use of the reservoir by L. spixii could be attributed to availability of muddy and sandy substrate associated with its k-strategy by carrying eggs, which could allow this species faces the environmental changes of the reservoir, mainly the variations in level of water, by hydroelectric power demand.

A year-long beach seine survey at the continental margin of Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, catching mainly young-of-the-year and juvenile fishes was carried out from July 1983 to June 1984, in order to describe the community structure and their spatial and seasonal variations. Fifty-five monthly samplied carried out in five sites in the marginal surf zone waters yielded 11,463 fishes in 82 species, 59 genera and 31 families. Gerreidae, Engraulidi-dae, Atherinidae and Ariidae families amounted 87.01% of the total catch in number, and 81% in weight. Cerres aprion Cuvier, 1829, Anchoa januaria (Steindachner, 1879), Anchoviella lepidentostole (Fowler, 1911), Atherinella brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) and Neluma barba (Lacépède, 1803) were the most numerous species, each one contributing more the 4% of total catch. Overall, both spatial and seasonal changes in fish were not evident although most individuais were more abundant in the outer Bay. The high number of fish species in this area, suggest the important role played by the Sepetiba Bay in the fish community to where many species probably migrate from the nearby sea and stay in the Bay during part of their life cycle. Decreasing diversity and high dominance of a few number of species seem to indicated a trend of environmental deterioration in the Sepetiba Bay over the last decade, as this date are compared whith similar sampling program carried out in 1993/94. It same to indicated that changes in fish populations which use this area as rearing grounds, occurred during their early life history.
