Bovine serum albumin (BSA)-protected AgPt bimetallic nanoparticles have been synthesized through a galvanic replacement reaction, using a silver nanoprism as a template. Synthesis was performed without the use of synthetic chemical surfactants, using proteins as a surface coating. Structural and compositional characterizations were performed using several spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The protein-protected AgPt nanoparticles show effective pH-switchable enzyme mimicking (“nanozyme”) activity similar to catalase and peroxidase. The platinum content in the AgPt nanoparticles is playing an important role in determining the enzymatic catalysis rate of the nanoparticles. Because of their porous structure, molecular payloads such as calcein also can be incorporated into the AgPt nanoparticles, which can be released on demand by chemical triggers, such as hydrogen peroxide.

The formation of perovskite oxide nanoparticles supported on ordered mesoporous silica with different pore geometry is here presented. Systematic study was performed varying both pore shape (gyroidal, cylindrical, spherical) and size (7.5, 12, 17nm) of the hosts. LaFeO3, PrFeO3 and LaCoO3 were chosen as target guest structures. The distribution of the oxide nanoparticles on silica was comprehensively assessed using a multi-technique approach. It could be shown that the pore geometry plays a determining role in the conversion of the infiltrated metal nitrates to metal oxide. In particular, slow degradation kinetic was observed in highly curved pores, which fostered nucleation and crystallization of the guest species. In spherical pore systems the enhancement of pore size caused a remarkable delay of the decomposition of the metal salts, but at the same time improved the homogeneous distribution of the oxide particles in the matrix.

However, influencing the fundamental properties is still challenging and requires sophisticated surface or dimensionality manipulation. Such a modification is presented for the example of colloidal lead‐sulfide nanowires. It is shown that the electrical properties of lead sulfide nanostructures can be altered from semiconducting to metallic with indications of superconductivity, by exploiting the flexibility of the colloidal synthesis to sculpt the crystal and to form different surface facets. A particular morphology of lead sulfide nanowires is prepared through the formation of {111} surface facets, which shows metallic and superconducting properties in contrast to other forms of this semiconducting crystal, which contain other surface facets ({100} and {110}). This effect, which is investigated with several experimental and theoretical approaches, is attributed to the presence of lead‐rich {111} facets. The rise of two-dimensional (2D) graphene-cognated crystals with nonzero band gaps like transition metal dichalcogenides has led to a rapidly increasing interest in their dimensionality-dependent anisotropic properties, which bear high potential for ultrathin electronics. 2D crystals of the III–VI metal chalcogenide InSe represent a new kind of material class predestined for the use in optoelectronic applications as highly responsive photodetectors and field-effect transistors. We present a solution-processable method for 2D ultrathin InSe nanosheets (≤5 nm with ligands, lateral sizes up to ∼800 μm) with a detailed characterization of the sheet formation by a lamellar ligand templated growth. Herein, we demonstrate that meticulous and in-depth analysis of the reaction mechanisms of nanoparticle formation is rewarded by full control of the size, shape, and crystal structure of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanocrystals during synthesis. Starting from two iron sources, iron(II) and iron(III) carbonate, a strict separation of oleate formation from the generation of reactive pyrolysis products and concomitant nucleation of iron oxide nanoparticles was achieved. This protocol enabled us to analyze each step of nanoparticle formation independently in depth. The progress of the entire reaction was monitored via matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and gas chromatography, thus providing insight into the formation of various iron oleate species prior to nucleation. Interestingly, due to the intrinsic strongly reductive pyrolysis conditions of the oleate intermediates and redox process in early stages of the synthesis, pristine iron oxide nuclei were composed exclusively from wüstite irrespective of the oxidation state of the iron source. Controlling the reaction conditions provided a very broad range of size- and shape-defined monodispersed iron oxide nanoparticles. Curiously, after nucleation, star-shaped nanocrystals were obtained that underwent metamorphism toward cubic-shaped particles. Electron energy loss spectroscopy tomography revealed ex post oxidation of the primary wustite nanocrystal, providing a full 3D image of Fe2+ and Fe3+ distribution within. Overall, we developed a highly flexible synthesis, yielding multi-gram amounts of well-defined iron oxide nanocrystals of different sizes and morphologies.

A preparation strategy is developed for monolithic samples of nanoporous gold with a hierarchical structure comprising two nested networks of solid "ligaments" on distinctly different structural length scales. The electrochemical dealloying protocol achieves a large retention of less noble element in a first corrosion step, thereby allowing an extra corrosion step which forms a separate structural hierarchy level. The beneficial impact of adding Pt to the Ag-Au master alloys that are more conventionally used in dealloying approaches to nanoporous gold is demonstrated. At approximate to 6 nm, the lower hierarchy level ligament size emerges extremely small. Furthermore, Pt favors the retention of Ag during the first dealloying step even when the master alloy has a high Au content. The high Au content reduces the corrosion-induced shrinkage, mitigating crack formation during preparation and favoring the formation of high-quality macroscopic (mm-sized) samples. The corrosion effectively carves out the nanoscale hierarchical ligament structure from the parent crystals tens of micrometers in size. This is revealed by X-ray as well as electron backscatter diffraction, which shows that the porous crystallites inherit the highly ordered, macroscopic crystal lattice structure of the master alloy.

CdSe/CdS-Quantum-dots-quantum-rods (QDQRs) with an aspect ratio of ∼ 6 are prepared via the seeded growth method, encapsulated within a shell of crosslinked poly(isoprene)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PI-b-PEG) diblock copolymer, and transferred from the organic phase into aqueous media. Their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 78% is not compromised by the phase transfer. Within a period of two months the PLQY of QDQRs in aqueous solution at neutral pH decreases only slightly (to ∼ 65%). The two-photon (TP) action cross sections of QDQRs (∼ 10(5) GM) are two orders of magnitude higher than those of CdSe/CdS/ZnS-core/shell/shell quantum dots (QDs, ∼ 10(3) GM) with comparable diameter (∼ 5 nm). After applying PI-b-PEG encapsulated QDQRs onto the small intestinal mucosa of mice in vivo, their strong red fluorescence can easily be observed by two-photon laser scanning microscopy (TPLSM) and clearly distinguished from autofluorescent background. Our results demonstrate that PI-b-PEG encapsulated CdSe/CdS-QDQRs are excellent probes for studying the uptake and fate of nanoparticles by two-photon imaging techniques in vivo.

Two-dimensional layers of bimetallic cobalt-platinum nanoparticles were prepared from colloidal suspension to serve as model systems for catalytic surface coatings with well-defined chemistry and geometry. After deposition, the particle surfaces were exposed to mild rf plasmas in order to remove the passivating shell of organic ligands that covered their surfaces after preparation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy subsequently carried out without exposing the samples to air revealed that all carbon species can be quantitatively removed due to the treatment and that selective oxidation/reduction of the particles is possible. Grazing-incidence small-angle x-ray scattering was used to study plasma-induced changes in the particle ordering with high precision. The measurements prove that even for closely packed layers with lateral distances of less than 2nm, changes in the mean diameters of the particles can be kept in the order of just 1%–2%.

A nonhydrolytic route to quantum-sized (d9 nm) ZnO nanocrystals in homogeneous organic solutions is presented. Nearly spherical ZnO nanocrystals were grown in a surfactant mixture of hexadecylamine and oleic acid (OLEA) by means of a two-step chemical process, based on the hot reduction (at 180-250 degrees C) of a zinc halide by superhydride (LiBEt3H) followed by oxidation of the resulting product. The experimental results suggested that the controlled growth of ZnO in the nanosized regime depended both on the OLEA-assisted generation of intermediate metallic nanoparticles and on the adjustment of their oxidation conditions by using a mild oxidant, trimethylamine-N-oxide, rather than molecular oxygen. The present synthetic approach demonstrates to be particularly suitable to prepare organic-soluble ultra-small ZnO nanocrystals of low size dispersion and of stable size, which are appealing for optoelectronic, catalytic, and sensing purposes.

We report different approaches to the synthesis of size series of highly luminescent CdSe/CdS core−shell nanocrystals. The mixture of hexadecylamine (HDA)−trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO)−trioctylphosphine (TOP) as stabilizing solvent was found to be very suitable for one-pot synthesis of nearly monodisperse CdSe nanocrystals followed by growing the CdS shell of a desired thickness. The obtained CdSe/CdS nanocrystals exhibited a narrow PL band (fwhm ∼27−35 nm) with reproducible room-temperature quantum yields as high as 50−85%. The emission color is tunable from green to red with increasing diameter of CdSe cores and/or thickness of the CdS shell. The possibility of preparing high-quality CdSe/CdS core−shell nanocrystals from the precursors cadmium acetate and H2S, which are more environmentally benign than conventional ones (e.g., dimethylcadmium) used in the organometallic synthesis of nanocrystals, was demonstrated. New approaches to synthesize photostable thiol-capped CdTe nanocrystals are reported. Post-preparative size-selective precipitation and selective photochemical etching have been developed as methods providing an increase of photoluminescence quantum efficiency of the nanocrystals of up to 40%. Some advantages of thiol-capping in comparison to conventional organometallic syntheses of quantum dots are discussed.

CdSe, CdTe and InP nanocrystals were prepared by an organometallic synthesis using mixtures of highly boiling primary amines and trioctylphosphine (TOP) as the coordinating solvent, and were characterized by powder XRD, SAXS, HRTEM, absorption and luminescence spectroscopy. The use of amines allowed us to obtain small crystalline nanoparticles for all materials investigated. In all cases, as-prepared colloids show rather narrow particle size distributions which can be further improved by standard size selective precipitation. Amino-capped II–VI nanocrystals show strong size-dependent band edge photoluminescence (PL). CdSe nanocrystals with the mean particle size in the range of 1.2–3.0 nm exhibit emission from blue to green with room temperature quantum yields of 15–20%. Colloidal solutions and redispersible powders of nanocrystalline, lanthanide-doped phosphates and vanadates have been prepared in high-boiling coordinating solvents or by hydrothermal means in aqueous solution. Highly crystalline materials were obtained by both methods despite the low temperature of 200°C applied during the synthesis. The materials have been characterized by using high-resolution TEM, powder-XRD, absorption spectroscopy and luminescence spectroscopy. By analyzing line splitting and intensity pattern in the luminescence spectra of the europium-doped samples, we are able to verify that the dopant ions enter the same lattice sites as in the corresponding bulk material. Size-selected samples of hydrothermally prepared lanthanide-doped YVO4 consist of particles ranging in size from about 10 to 30 nm. The nanoparticles exhibit the tetragonal zircon structure known for bulk material. In the case of LaPO4 the hydrothermal method yields nanoparticles or nano-fibers (width of about 9 nm) depending on the synthesis conditions, while the synthesis in high-boiling solvents yields colloids with a very narrow size distribution and a mean particle size of 4.5 nm. All LaPO4-nanomaterials exhibit the monazite-structure, irrespective of their morphology or size. In all systems investigated, energy transfer between the host and the dopant ions is observed. Upon UV excitation, aqueous colloidal solutions of YVO4:Eu nanoparticles show a luminescence quantum yield of 15% at room-temperature. In LaPO4:Ce, Tb energy transfer is observed between cerium and terbium ions.

Nanocrystals of LaPO4:Eu and CePO4:Tb with a mean particle size of 5 nm and a narrow size distribution have been prepared by reacting the corresponding metal chlorides, phosphoric acid, and a base at 200 °C in tris(ethylhexyl) phosphate. Highly crystalline material was obtained as confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction measurements and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Successful doping with europium was evident from the splitting and the intensity pattern of the luminescence lines. Luminescence lifetime measurements were used to confirm doping and energy transfer in both materials. Colloidal solutions of CePO4:Tb exhibit an overall luminescence quantum yield of 16%.

Nanoparticle brushes: Complex nanostructures can be formed by self assembly of amphiphilic CdSe/CdS core-shell nanoparticles that bear a brushlike layer of poly(ethylene oxide) chains. This route is based on controlling the volume fractions of hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties within the particles and allows the formation of micellar, cylindrical, or vesicular nanoobjects (see picture).

We propose a new type of surfactants, namely, tetrazole derivatives which can be controllably removed from the nanoparticle surface. Tetrazoles are a peculiar class of heterocyclic compounds. The presence of four nitrogen atoms in the tetrazole ring determines their interesting physical and chemical properties. Tetrazoles show high thermal stability below 200C while decomposing at higher temperature with formation of gaseous products and no or very little solid residue. Moreover, the tetrazole group is known as an important ligand in coordination chemistry. Its donor nitrogen atoms can bind to various metal ions leading to stable complexes with diverse coordination modes of the heteroring. CdTe nanoclusters were prepared in aqueous solution by the reaction between Cd2+ and NaHTe in the presence of thioglycolic acid. Under reflux, the clusters start to crystallize and show a narrow band emission. The photoluminescence efficiency of CdTe nanocrystals strongly depends on the pH value of the colloidal solution. The maximum quantum yield at room temperature is approximately 18% when the pH value of the CdTe solution is brought to 4.5 by using thioglycolic acid. The optical spectroscopy studies imply that the pH-dependent behavior of the CdTe nanocrystals' fluorescence is caused by structural changes on the surface rather than the size of the nanocrystals. Systematic absorption and fluorescence studies on dialyzed samples suggest that in the acidic range a shell of cadmium thiol complexes is formed around the CdTe core. We present a facile and safe ligand exchange method for readily synthesized CuInSe2 (CIS) and CuIn(1-x)Ga(x)Se2 (CIGS) nanocrystals (NCs) from oleylamine to 1-ethyl-5-thiotetrazole which preserves the colloidal stability of the chalcopyrite structure. 1-ethyl-5-thiotetrazole as thermally degradable ligand is adapted for the first time for trigonal pyramidal CIS NCs (18 nm), elongated CIS NCs (9 nm) and CIGS NCs (6 nm). The exchanged NC solutions are spin-coated onto Si/SiO2 substrates with predefined gold electrodes to yield ordered NC thin films. These films are thermally annealed at 260 C to completely remove 1-ethyl-5-thiotetrazol leaving virtually bare NC surfaces. We measure the current-voltage characteristics of the NC solids prior to ligand thermolysis in the dark and under illumination and after thermolysis of the ligand in the same manner. The conductivity of trigonal pyramidal CIS NCs increases by four orders of magnitude from 1.4*10E-9 S/cm in the dark to 1.4*10E-5 S/cm for ligand-free illuminated NC films. Elongated CIS NC films show an increase by three orders of magnitude and CIGS NC films exhibit improved conductivity by two orders of magnitude. The degree of conductivity enhancement thereby depends on the NC size accentuating the role of trap-states and internal grain boundaries in ligand-free NC solids for electrical transport. The formation of monodisperse, tunable sized, alloyed nanoparticles of Ni, Co, or Fe with Pt and pure Pt nanoparticles attached to carbon nanotubes has been investigated. Following homogeneous nucleation, nanoparticles attach directly to non-functionalized singlewall and multiwall carbon nanotubes during nanoparticle synthesis as a function of ligand nature and the nanoparticle work function. These ligands do not only provide a way to tune the chemical composition, size and shape of the nanoparticles but also control a strong reversible interaction with carbon nanotubes and permit controlling the nanoparticle coverage. Raman spectroscopy reveals that the sp2 hybridization of the carbon lattice is not modified by the attachment. In order to better understand the interaction between the directly attached nanoparticles and the non-functionalized carbon nanotubes we employed first-principles calculations on model systems of small Pt clusters and both zig-zag and armchair singlewall carbon nanotubes. The reaction of lithium tetrahydridoborate and iron bromide in high boiling ether as reaction medium produces an ultrafine, pyrophoric and magnetic precipitate. X-ray and electron diffraction proved the product to be amorphous. According to X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS) the precipitate has FeB structure up to nearly two coordination spheres around an iron absorber atom. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirms the ultrafine powder to be nanoscale. Subsequent annealing at 450 °C causes the atoms to arrange in a more distinct FeB structure, and further thermal treatment to 1050 °C extends the local structure to the α-modification of FeB. Between 1050 °C and 1500 °C α-FeB is transformed into β-FeB.

We report the growth of an unstable shell-like gold structure around dihexagonal pyramidal CdSe nanocrystals in organic solution and the structural transformation to spherical domains by two means: i) electron beam irradiation (in situ) and (ii) addition of a strong reducing agent during synthesis. By varying the conditions of gold deposition, such as ligands present or the geometry of the CdSe nanocrystals, we were able to tune the gold domain size between 1.4 nm to 3.9 nm and gain important information on the role of surface chemistry in hetero nanoparticle synthesis and seed reactivity, both of which are crucial points regarding the chemical design of new materials for photocatalysis and optoelectronic applications., 5 pages, 4 figures

Indium phosphide (InP) nanostructures have been synthesized by means of colloidal chemistry. Under appropriate conditions needle-shaped nanostructures composed of an In head and an InP tail with lengths up to several micrometers could be generated in a one-pot synthesis. The growth is interpreted in terms of simultaneous decomposition of the In precursor and in situ generation of In and InP nanostructures. We demonstrate the shape- and size-controlled synthesis of colloidal ∼10 nm bismuth telluride nanoparticles stabilized by organic ligands in solution. Post-synthetic ligand exchange with oleic acid allows for a quick and simple ligand removal by consecutive washing with basic ammonia solution. Mild spark plasma sintering yields a macroscopic nanostructured bulk solid with nanograins unaltered in size and shape. We present the full thermoelectric characterization with an emphasis on the thermal properties of this material. It will be shown that thus prepared nanostructured bulk solids possess significantly altered physical properties typical for materials with high surface-to-volume-ratios. These alterations have the potential to lead to improved thermoelectric performances benefiting from their phonon-glass electron-crystal behavior.

Controlling anisotropy is a key concept to generate complex functionality in advanced materials. For this, oriented attachment of nanocrystal building blocks, a self assembly of particles into larger single crystalline objects, is one of the most promising approaches in nanotechnology. We report here the 2D oriented attachment of PbS nanocrystals into ultra-thin single crystal sheets with dimensions on the micrometer scale. We found that this process is initiated by co-solvents which alter nucleation and growth rates during the primary nanocrystal formation and finally driven by dense packing of oleic acid ligands on {100} facets of PbS. We report a novel synthesis for near monodisperse, sub-10-nm Bi2Te3 nanoparticles. At first, a new reduction route to bismuth nanoparticles is described which are applied as starting materials in the formation of rhombohedral Bi2Te3 nanoparticles. After ligand removal by a novel hydrazine hydrate etching procedure, the nanoparticle powder is spark plasma sintered to a pellet with preserved crystal grain sizes. Unlike previous works on the properties of Bi2Te3 nanoparticles, the full thermoelectric characterization of such sintered pellets shows a highly reduced thermal conductivity and the same electric conductivity as bulk n-type Bi2Te3., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

The Langmuir-Blodgett technique was utilized and optimized to produce closed monolayers of cobalt-platinum nanoparticles over vast areas. It is shown that sample preparation, "dipping angle", and subphase type have a strong impact on the quality of the produced films. The amount of ligands on the nanoparticles surface must be minimized, the dipping angle must be around 105$^{\circ}$, while the glycol subphase is necessary to obtain nanoparticle monolayers. The achieved films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and grazing incidence x-ray scattering (GISAXS). The electrical properties of the deposited films were studied by direct current (DC) measurements showing a discrepancy to the variable range hopping transport from the granular metal model, and favoring the simple thermal activated charge transport. We report on the direct observation of confined acoustic phonons in the photoluminescence spectra of single CdSe-CdS-ZnS nanocrystals, whose ligands were exchanged to poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) before they were embedded in a PEO matrix. Modeling a nanocrystal as an elastic sphere, the confined acoustic modes can be assigned to purely radial vibrations: the breathing mode and its two first radial harmonics. In addition to acoustic modes, we also observe longitudinal optical modes of the core material and, remarkably, also of both shell materials.

Novel applications in nanotechnology rely on the design of tailored nano-architectures. For this purpose, carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles are intensively investigated. In this work we study the influence of non-functionalized carbon nanotubes on the synthesis of CdSe nanoparticles by means of organometallic colloidal routes. This new synthesis methodology does not only provide an effective path to attach nanoparticles non-covalently to carbon nanotubes but represents also a new way to control the shape of nanoparticles., 6 pages, 6 figures

High quality CoPt(3) nanocrystals were synthesized via simultaneous reduction of platinum acetylacetonate and thermodecomposition of cobalt carbonyl in the presence of 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid and hexadecylamine as stabilizing agents. The high flexibility and reproducibility of the synthesis allows us to consider CoPt(3) nanocrystals as a model system for the hot organometallic synthesis of metal nanoparticles. Different experimental conditions (reaction temperature, concentration of stabilizing agents, ratio between cobalt and platinum precursors, etc.) have been investigated to reveal the processes governing the formation of the metal alloy nanocrystals. It was found that CoPt(3) nanocrystals nucleate and grow up to their final size at an early stage of the synthesis with no Ostwald ripening observed upon further heating. In this case, the nanocrystal size can be controlled only via proper balance between the rates for nucleation and for growth from the molecular precursors. Thus, the size of CoPt(3) nanocrystals can be precisely tuned from approximately 3 nm up to approximately 18 nm in a predictable and reproducible way. The mechanism of homogeneous nucleation, evolution of the nanocrystal ensemble in the absence of Ostwald ripening, nanocrystal faceting, and size-dependent magnetic properties are investigated and discussed on the example of CoPt(3) magnetic alloy nanocrystals. The developed approach was found to be applicable to other systems, e.g., FePt and CoPd(2) magnetic alloy nanocrystals.

We demonstrate the controlled growth of high aspect ratio anatase TiO2 nanorods by hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) in oleic acid (OLEA) as surfactant at a temperature as low as 80 degrees C. Chemical modification of TTIP by OLEA is proven to be a rational strategy to tune the reactivity of the precursor toward water. The most influential factors in shape control of the nanoparticles are investigated by simply manipulating their growth kinetics. The presence of tertiary amines or quaternary ammonium hydroxides as catalysts is essential to promote fast crystallization under mild conditions. The novelty of the present approach relies on the large-scale production of organic-capped TiO2 nanocrystals to which standard processing of colloidal nanocrystals, such as surface ligand exchange, can be applied for the first time. Concentrated colloidal titania dispersions can be prepared for a number of fundamental studies in homogeneous solutions and represent a new source of easily processable oxide material for many technological applications.

CdS nanoparticles with diameters from 14 - 120 Å and very narrow size distributions are studied by x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy between 5 and 296 K. Clear trends in the Cd-S distance as a function of size and surface stabilization of the nanoparticles could be observed. Particles with thiols as ligands show an expansion of the Cd-S distance with decreasing particle size whereas polyphosphate stabilized samples are slightly contracted with respect to CdS bulk. The static disorder of the nanoparticles is enlarged with respect to the bulk. In contrast, the dynamic behavior of the nanoparticles shows a slight stiffening of the Cd-S vibration with decreasing particle size. Measurements of the third moment of the pair distribution function indicate the possibility to distinguish between cubic and hexagonal structures in CdS nanoparticles.
