Background: Access to emergency contraception is an important consideration in preventing unintended pregnancies. Inconsistent information about emergency contraceptive given to patients at retail pharmacies may limit access. Objective: In this study, we aimed to assess pharmacy students' knowledge of oral emergency contraception. Methods: Students in a Doctor of Pharmacy program completed a confidential survey about their knowledge of and training on oral emergency contraception. Respondents self-reported demographics included age, race, ethnicity, gender, and year in pharmacy school. The survey questions assessed student knowledge of indications, availability, side effects, and mechanisms of action of oral emergency contraception, as well as their training on emergency contraception. Chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests were used to determine if demographics influenced knowledge outcomes. A multivariate logistic regression, including age, gender, ethnicity, religion, year of training, hours of education, and source of knowledge acquisition, was used to adjust for confounding variables. Results: Among 296 pharmacy students, 31% (92/296) completed the survey. Among respondents, 34% (31/92) showed adequate knowledge of oral emergency contraception based on four critical knowledge questions. Third- and fourth-year students were more likely to have adequate knowledge than first- and second-year students (odds ratio [OR], 2.70; confidence interval [95% CI], 1.07?6.80). Students who reported learning about emergency contraception through reading assignments were more likely to have adequate knowledge than students who did not report learning from reading assignments (OR, 2.09; 95% CI, 1.30?3.35). Conclusions: Most pharmacy students at a single academic center did not have adequate knowledge of oral emergency contraception. These findings highlight the need for trainings to improve pharmacy student knowledge of oral emergency contraception.

Cancer, the second major cause of death after cardiovascular disease has been reported to have resulted in over 10 million deaths worldwide per year, on average. Resistance to therapeutic interventions is a definitive characteristic of cancer, where acquired resistance has become a challenge that has significantly reduced the anti-tumor efficiency of cancer therapy. The tumor microenvironment (TME) is heavily responsible for these cancer cell-targeted drug delivery system challenges due to its abundant physiological and pathological barriers that impair the tumoral penetration and distribution of nanotherapeutics. However, these unique TME characteristics also make the TME an attractive therapeutic target and a focus of intense research in the development of antitumor nanomedicine strategies that can directly target or modulate it. In this review, we summarize the strategies developed to target the TME to overcome the obstacles against nano-drug delivery and consequently improve anti-tumor efficiency.

Electric vehicles have recently attracted research interest. An electric vehicle is composed of two energy sources, such as fuel cells and ultracapacitors, which are employed to provide, respectively, the steady-state and transient power demanded by the vehicle. A bidirectional DC-DC converter is needed to interface the ultracapacitor to a DC bus. The pack of ultracapacitor consists of many cells in series and possibly also in parallel. In this regard, this paper introduces a comparative study between two packs of supercapacitors. The first supercapacitor pack is composed of ten cells in series but the second supercapacitor pack is composed of five cells in series and two parallel circuits. Each cell is characterized by 2.5 V and 100 F. A number of practical tests are presented.

The objective of this paper is to apply cognitive map-related techniques to extract causal knowledge from a specific problem domain. This paper proposes to draw an average cognitive map in order to identify the failure factors of the Tunisian small investors. Our paper extends traditional and behavioral finance and previous research by proposing a new approach to building an average cognitive map for the explanation of small investors’ failure in the stock market.

A summary of the study of Aphis illinoisensis Shimer on grapes, Vitis vinifera in the Mediterranean area brings references and new findings on its distribution in Crete/Greece, Turkey, Northern Cyprus, Malta, Israel, Montenegro, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya. Parasitoids of A. illinoisensis were only occasionally found (Aphidius matricariae Hal. - Cyprus, Turkey, Greece; Aphidius colemani Viereck - Libya; Lysiphlebus testaceipes Cress. - Algeria). Of the native species, i.e. A. colemani, and others similar to the native species, L. testaceipes seem to be a promising biocontrol agent within the framework of an ecologically friendly management in the area. Given the evidence of its expansion, A. illinoisensis is expected to expand further in several directions from the recently documented invaded area to all the grape-growing areas of the Mediterranean and even those of South-Eastern and Central Europe.

Naked mole rats (Heterocephalus galber) are eusocial mammals from East Africa. Their extraordinary social organisation is accompanied by remarkable adaptations to an underground lifestyle, extreme longevity and resistance to many diseases, making naked mole rats a highly relevant model for biological research. However, their living conditions in controlled environments do not allow them to express fundamental behaviours: digging galleries and exploring. This gap probably constitutes a bias to any behavioural or even medical study, because it represents a potential obstacle to their well-being. In this article, we tested the effects of the introduction of a diggable substrate on the behaviour of a colony of naked mole rats at the Menagerie, le Zoo du Jardin des Plantes, Paris. We measured individual exploratory latencies, the number of entries per minute and the frequency with which naked mole rats gnawed tunnels during observation trials. We found that: (i) young individuals explore more quickly, (ii) the introduction of a diggable substrate encourages exploration and digging behaviour, and (iii) could therefore be a relevant element to introduce under human care. Introduction: Radiofrequency (RF) relieves chronic pain in humans, but it is unexplored in horses affected by chronic lameness. This study aims to describe the technique and the histological effects of ultrasound (US)-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of palmar digital nerves (PDNs) in horse's fetlock and pastern, ex vivo ., Methods: After assessing the US anatomy of lateral and medial PDNs in fetlock and pastern in vivo ( n  = 10 horses; 20 forelimbs), US-guided RFA was performed on these sites in cadaveric forelimbs ( n  = 10) applying four different settings with increasing invasiveness ( n  = 40 total treatments): 60°C, 6 min (GROUP LOW); 70°C, 4 min (GROUP MEDIUM); 90°C, 2 min (GROUP HIGH); 80°C, 8 min (GROUP VERY HIGH). Needle-tip-to-nerve proximity was assessed with US and methylene blue, injected through the port of the RF needle. Nerves were collected for microscopical assessment., Results: Transverse palmaro-lateral and palmaro-medial US images of fetlock and pastern detected PDNs consistently, close to the palmar digital artery. With in-plane US technique, RFA was performed at target in 31/40 cases, with significantly higher number of failures in fetlock ( p  = 0.008). PDNs histology identified thermal injury/coagulation with axonal degeneration and collagen homogenation. Nuclear smearing of arterial leyomyocytes was also observed. Nerve coagulation was significantly associated with treatment ( p  = 0.03) and needle-tip-to-nerve proximity (US distance: p  = 0.009; blue distance: p  = 0.04)., Discussion: The PDNs were easily visualized and reached with the RF needle by US in-plane-guided technique. RFA produced axonal thermal damage and intensity-related coagulation effectiveness. To ensure effective nerve coagulation, it is crucial that the needle is accurately positioned in close proximity to the target nerve. It is unclear which patients with ER-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer benefit from extended endocrine therapy beyond 5 years. Prognostic factors for late-recurring breast cancer postrelapse survival have been reported. We retrospectively analyzed data from 892 patients with ER-positive and HER2-negative invasive breast cancer who were disease-free after completing a 5-year adjuvant endocrine therapy. Patients were then classified as high-risk (positive lymph nodes, large tumor size, high tumor grade) or low-risk. High-risk patients were divided into extended endocrine therapy and stop groups. Comparisons were made using propensity score matching, and the benefits of extended endocrine therapy for high-risk patients and prognostic factors for postrelapse survival were assessed. The high- and low-risk groups comprised 444 and 448 patients, respectively. The 10-year distant disease-free survival (DDFS) rates were 96.3 % (95 % confidence interval [CI] 0.912-0.985) and 86.5 % (95 % CI 0.798-0911) in the extended and stop groups, respectively (P = 0.00382). Cox proportional hazards model revealed that extended endocrine therapy promoted greater reduction in distant metastasis risk than 5-year endocrine therapy in high-risk populations (hazard ratio [HR] 0.27; 95 % CI 0.11-0.68; P = 0.0054). Postrelapse survival was significantly different in patients with DDFS ≥7 years (HR 0.24; 95 % CI 0.072-0.81; P = 0.021) and those with better response to first-line treatment (HR 0.072; 95 % CI, 0.058-0.90; P = 0.041). Patients with risk factors for late recurrence should be considered for extended endocrine therapy. Introduction: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), recognized as the most heterogeneous type of breast cancer (BC), exhibits a worse prognosis than other subtypes. Mitochondria dynamics play a vital role as mediators in tumorigenesis by adjusting to the cell microenvironments. However, the relationship between mitochondrial dynamics and metabophenotype exhibits discrepancies and divergence across various research and BC models. Therefore, this study aims to explore the role of mitochondrial dynamics in TNBC drug resistance and tumorigenesis., Methods: The Wst-8 test was conducted to assess doxorubicin sensitivity in HCC38, MDA-MB-231 (TNBC), and MCF-7 (luminal). Confocal microscopy and FACS were used to quantify the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔφM), mitophagy, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Agilent Seahorse XF Analyzer was utilized to measure metabolic characteristics. Dynamin-related protein-1 (DRP1), Parkin, and p62 immunohistochemistry staining were performed using samples from 107 primary patients with BC before and after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC)., Results: MDA-MB-231, a TNBC cell line with reduced sensitivity to doxorubicin, reduced ΔφM, and enhanced mitophagy to maintain ROS production through oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS)-based metabolism. HCC38, a doxorubicin-sensitive cell line, exhibited no alterations in ΔφM or mitophagy. However, it demonstrated an increase in ROS production and glycolysis. Clinicopathological studies revealed that pretreatment (before NAC) expression of DRP1 was significant in TNBC, as was pretreatment expression of Parkin in the hormone receptor-negative group. Furthermore, low p62 levels seem to be a risk factor for recurrence-free survival., Conclusion: Our findings indicated that the interplay between mitophagy, linked to a worse clinical prognosis, and OXPHOS metabolism promoted chemotherapy resistance in TNBC. Mitochondrial fission is prevalent in TNBC. These findings suggest that targeting the unique mitochondrial metabolism and dynamics in TNBC may offer a novel therapeutic strategy for patients with TNBC., (© 2024 The Authors. Background: The inclusion of dexmedetomidine (DEX) within a balanced general anaesthesia protocol is effective in improving the clinical outcome and recovery quality of anaesthesia in horses. This study aimed to determine the pharmacokinetic profile of DEX following repeated subcutaneous (SC) administration at 2 µg/kg every 60 min till the end of the procedure in comparison to intravenous constant rate infusion (CRI) at 1 µg/kg/h in anaesthetized horses undergoing diagnostic procedures up to the end of the diagnostic procedure., Results: In the CRI and SC groups DEX maximum concentrations (C max ) were 0.83 ± 0.27 ng/mL and 1.14 ± 0.71 ng/mL, respectively, reached at a time (T max ) of 57.0 ± 13.4 min and 105.5 ± 29.9 min. Mean residence time to the last measurable concentration (MRT last ) was 11.7 ± 6.2 and 55.8 ± 19.7 min for the CRI group and SC groups, respectively. The apparent elimination half-life was 18.0 ± 10.0 min in the CRI group and 94.8 ± 69.8 min for the SC group, whereas the area under the curve (AUC 0-last ) resulted 67.7 ± 29.3 and 83.2 ± 60.5 min*ng/mL for CRI and SC group, respectively. Clearance was 16.26 ± 8.07 mL/min/kg for the CRI group. No signs of adverse effects were recorded in both groups., Conclusions: The pharmacokinetic profile of DEX following repeated SC administration in anaesthetized horses was comparable to intravenous CRI administration during the intranaesthetic period and beneficial during the recovery phase from general anaesthesia. This study compared the postoperative analgesic efficacy of intraperitoneal and incisional lidocaine versus ropivacaine in dogs undergoing major abdominal surgeries. Dogs randomly received intraperitoneal lidocaine irrigation (4 mg kg-1, diluted to 5 ml kg-1, L group), ropivacaine (4 mg kg-1, diluted to 5 ml kg-1, R group) or 0.9% saline (5 ml kg-1, C group). Prior to skin closure, dogs received incisional lidocaine 2 mg kg-1 (group L), incisional ropivacaine 2 mg kg-1 (group R) or incisional saline 0.2 ml kg-1 (group C). Pain was assessed at different time points up to 24 hours after extubation, using the Short Form-Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale and VAS Scale. In group C, postoperative pain scores were significantly higher than in groups L and R from T0.5 to T6 (p < 0.05). In R group, postoperative pain scores were significantly lower than in groups L and C from T12 to T24 (p < 0.05). Rescue analgesia was administered to 5/11 dogs in L group, 1/10 dogs in R group and 8/10 dogs in C group. Groups L and R experienced a significantly lower postoperative pain during the first 6 hours after extubation, compared with group C. Ropivacaine provided lower postoperative pain scores than lidocaine and saline up to 24 hours after extubation. According to the obtained results, ropivacaine seemed to provide better and longer lasting postoperative analgesia compared with lidocaine. Objectives: The aims of this study were to compare the sedative effect, feasibility of venous angiocatheter placement and influence on heart rate (HR), systemic blood pressure (SBP) and echocardiographic variables of two multimodal anaesthetic protocols in uncooperative cats; and to compare their influence on HR, SBP and echocardiographic variables 20 mins after sedation and after elective ovariectomy., Methods: Eighteen stray female cats randomly received intramuscular (IM) ketamine (2 mg/kg) and methadone (0.3 mg/kg) plus dexmedetomidine (7 µg/kg; group D, n = 9) or alfaxalone (2 mg/kg; group A, n = 9). A sedation score (0-15 [from none to good sedation]) was assigned at 5 mins, 10 mins, 15 mins and 20 mins after IM injection. Venous angiocatheter placement and echocardiographic examination feasibility scores (both from 0 to 3 [from very difficult to very easy]) were recorded at 20 mins. Echocardiography, HR and blood pressure measurements (Doppler and oscillometric methods) were performed at 20 mins and at the end of surgery., Results: Sedation and angiocatheter feasibility scores did not differ significantly between groups ( P >0.05); the feasibility score of echocardiographic examination was higher in cats in group D ( P  = 0.01). HR was higher in group A at 20 mins and after surgery ( P <0.05). The systolic arterial pressure obtained with the Doppler method was statistically significantly higher in cats in group D than in group A at 20 mins ( P  = 0.01), while postoperatively there were no differences between groups. Cats in group D showed significantly higher atrial diameters ( P <0.05) and slower atrial flows ( P  = 0.04) compared with group A; ventricular thickness and atrial function did not differ between groups ( P >0.05). Most echocardiographic variables were not different at 20 mins vs postoperatively., Conclusions and Relevance: Both protocols allowed for effective sedation; however, cats in group D presented alterations in some echocardiographic measurements; the use of alfaxalone, combined with ketamine and methadone, is recommended to obtain a reliable echocardiographic evaluation in uncooperative cats.

The gene flow from Brassica oleracea L. wild relatives to B. oleracea vegetable crops have occurred and continue to occur ordinarily in several Mediterranean countries, such as Sicily, representing an important hot spot of diversity for some of them, such as broccoli, cauliflower and kale. For detecting and for exploiting the forgotten alleles lost during the domestication processes of the B. oleracea crops, attention has been pointed to the individuation of specific markers for individuating genotypes characterized by hypertrophic inflorescence traits by the marker assisted selection (MAS) during the first plant growing phases after the crosses between broccoli ( B. oleracea var. italica )/cauliflower ( B. oleracea var. botrytis ) with B. oleracea wild relatives (n = 9), reducing the cultivation and evaluation costs. The desired traits often found in several B. oleracea wild relatives are mainly addressed to improve the plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses and to increase the organoleptic, nutritive and nutraceutical traits of the products. One of the targeted traits for broccoli and cauliflower breeding is represented by the inflorescences size as is documented by the domestication processes of these two crops. Based on the previous results achieved, the numerical matrix, obtained utilizing five simple sequence repeats (SSRs), was analyzed to assess the relationship among the main inflorescence characteristics and the allelic variation of the SSRs loci analyzed (BoABI1, BoAP1, BoPLD1, BoTHL1 and PBCGSSRBo39), both for the Brassica oleracea and B . oleracea wild relatives (n = 9) accessions set. The main inflorescence morphometric characteristics, such as weight, height, diameter, shape, inflorescence curvature angle and its stem diameter, were registered before the flower anthesis. We analyzed the correlations among the allelic variation of the SSRs primers utilized and the inflorescence morphometric characteristics to individuate genomic regions stimulating the hypertrophy of the reproductive organ. The relationships found explain the diversity among B. oleracea crops and the B. oleracea complex species (n = 9) for the inflorescence size and structure. The individuated markers allow important time reduction during the breeding programs after crossing wild species for transferring useful biotic and abiotic resistances and organoleptic and nutraceutical traits to the B. oleracea crops by MAS., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Egyptian fruit bats have gained increasing interest being a natural reservoir for emerging zoonotic viruses. Anaesthesia is often required to allow safe handling of bats. We aimed to compare the sedative and cardiopulmonary effects of two balanced anaesthetic protocols in bats undergoing gonadectomy. Group DK (n = 10) received intramuscular dexmedetomidine (40 µg/kg) and ketamine (7 mg/kg), whereas group DBM (n = 10) received intramuscular dexmedetomidine (40 µg/kg), butorphanol (0.3 mg/kg) and midazolam (0.3 mg/kg). Induction time and cardiopulmonary parameters were recorded. If anaesthetic plan was inadequate, isoflurane was titrated-to-effect. At the end of surgery venous blood gas analysis was performed and atipamezole or atipamezole-flumazenil was administered for timed and scored recovery. In DBM group heart rate and peripheral oxygen saturation were significantly higher (p = 0.001; p = 0.003 respectively), while respiratory rate was significantly lower (p = 0.001). All bats required isoflurane supplementation with no significant differences between groups. Induction and recovery times showed no significant differences. In group DK a better recovery was scored (p = 0.034). Sodium and chloride were significantly higher in DBM group (p = 0.001; p = 0.002 respectively).
