Abstract

In response to the European Commission's aim of cutting carbon emissions by 2050, there is a growing need for cutting-edge solutions to promote low-carbon energy consumption in public infrastructures. This paper introduces a Proof of Concept (PoC) that integrates the transparency and immutability of blockchain and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance energy efficiency in tangible government-held public assets, focusing on curbing carbon emissions. Our system design utilizes a forecasting and optimization framework, inscribing the scheduled operations of heat pumps on a public sector blockchain. Registering usage metrics on the blockchain facilitates the verification of energy conservation, allows transparency in public energy consumption, and augments public awareness of energy usage patterns. The system fine-tunes the operations of electric heat pumps, prioritizing their use during low-carbon emission periods in power systems occurring during high renewable energy generations. Adaptive temperature configuration and schedules enable energy management in public venues, but blockchains' processing power and latency may represent bottlenecks setting scalability limits. Abstract

With the increasing adoption of decentralized information systems based on a variety of permissionless blockchain networks, the choice of consensus mechanism is at the core of many controversial discussions. Ethereum's recent transition from (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS)-based consensus has further fueled the debate on which mechanism is more favorable. While the aspects of energy consumption and degree of (de-)centralization are often emphasized in the public discourse, seminal research has also shed light on the formal security aspects of both approaches individually. However, related work has not yet comprehensively structured the knowledge about the security properties of PoW and PoS. Rather, it has focused on in-depth analyses of specific protocols or high-level comparative reviews covering a broad range of consensus mechanisms. To fill this gap and unravel the commonalities and discrepancies between the formal security properties of PoW- and PoS-based consensus, we conduct a systematic literature review over 26 research articles. Our findings indicate that PoW-based consensus with the longest chain rule provides the strongest formal security guarantees. The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. Abstract

Shallow seawaters are problematic for acoustic and optical communications. Sensor networks based on electromagnetic (EM) communications are evaluated in this environment. In order to characterize the subaquatic channel, several measurement systems have been designed, built and tested in the sea obtaining very reliable results. Experiments carried out with dipoles and loop antennas showed serious disagreement with the state of the art, especially when dipole antennas are used. Dipoles performance was poor while magnetic loops showed relevant results. Measurement system is described in detail and real attenuation of the subaquatic channel is obtained for several distances and antennas. Abstract

We analyze the problem of localization algorithms for underwater sensor networks. We first characterize the underwater channel for radio communications and adjust a linear model with measurements of real transmissions. We propose an algorithm where the sensor nodes collaboratively estimate their unknown positions in the network. In this setting, we assume low connectivity of the nodes, low data rates, and nonzero probability of lost packets in the transmission. Finally, we consider the problem of a node estimating it's position in underwater navigation. We also provide simulations illustrating the previous proposals.

Abstract

We use real measurements of the underwater channel to simulate a whole underwater RF wireless sensor networks, including propagation impairments (e.g., noise, interference), radio hardware (e.g., modulation scheme, bandwidth, transmit power), hardware limitations (e.g., clock drift, transmission buffer) and complete MAC and routing protocols. The results should be useful for designing centralized and distributed algorithms for applications like monitoring, event detection, localization and aid to navigation. Currently, there are many applications to search for homes for sale or rent (web and mobile applications), as well as systems used by real estate (independent applications), applications that can only be used by the company, users or owners are obliged to visit said imbiarías to be able to carry out all the corresponding procedures. If we go to more practical methods, there are mobile applications where users can access, but these only allow them to consult the properties to rent or buy, this is where the idea of ​​a project that aims to improve the quality of people's lives, making it easier to streamline the processes of leasing and buying a property, benefiting the landlord and tenant. But we also want an important tool for owners, which allows them to manage their properties from the same application, such as being able to offer their real estate, the leasing process, and the purchase process, without having to pay a large initial payment on physical real estate, which translates into savings for the user. With this mobile application, the response time is reduced throughout the process., Actualmente, existen muchas aplicaciones para buscar viviendas en venta o alquileres (aplicaciones web y móviles), así como los sistemas utilizados por bienes raíces (aplicaciones independientes), aplicativos que solo puede ser utilizado por la empresa los usuarios o propietarios están obligados a visitar dichas imbiarías para poder hacer todas sus gestiones correspondientes. Si nos vamos a métodos más prácticos hay aplicativos móviles donde los usuarios pueden acceder, pero estos sol les permite hacer consulta de los inmuebles a rentar o comprar, de aquí es de donde viene la idea de un proyecto que tiene como objetivo mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas, facilitándole el agilizar de una forma más sencilla los procesos de arrendamiento y compra de un inmueble, beneficiándose el arrendador y arrendatario. Pero también queremos una herramienta importante para los propietarios, que le permita administrar sus propiedades desde el mismo aplicativo, como el poder ofertar sus inmuebles, proceso de arrendación, y proceso de compra, sin tener que pagar un gran pago inicial en bienes inmuebles físicos, lo que se traduce en ahorros para el usuario. Con esta aplicación móvil, el tiempo de respuesta se reduce durante todo el proceso.

Abstract

This document aims to show a synthesis of the main biases that can be present in occupational health studies, their origins and their consequences. For this purpose, a documentary review was conducted of books and articles published in the last 10 years in English and Spanish. Excluding those documents that were not published in journals with an editorial board and, in the case of books, that did not have an ISBN registry. A total of 7 books and 14 articles were included. A bias is a systematic error that occurs in the research process and can occur during the data planning, collection, and processing. Two main types of biases will be reviewed: 1) Selection and 2) Information and/or measurement biases, in each case their definition and, their possible impact on the results are described, a series of examples that may help to understand them are provided. One of the main effects of the presence of biases in research is that they cause an error in the classification of participants, which can be differential or not, and this has an impact on the results by overestimating or underestimating them, i.e., finding stronger effects than the real ones, or worse, not finding them when they exist. To illustrate the impact of biases, different scenarios were reviewed that provide examples of cases of overestimation and underestimation that lead to unreliable results., El objetivo de este documento es mostrar una síntesis de los principales sesgos que pueden aparecer en el estudio de la salud del trabajo, sus orígenes y consecuencias. Para ello, se realizó una revisión documental de libros y artículos publicados en los últimos 10 años en inglés y español. Se dejó fuera aquellos documentos que no estuvieran publicados en revistas con comité editorial y en caso de los libros, que no tuvieran registro ISBN. Se incluyeron 7 libros y 14 artículos. Un sesgo es un error sistemático, que sucede en el proceso de investigación y que pueden darse durante la planeación, recolección y procesamiento de datos. Se revisarán dos tipos principales de sesgos: 1) Selección y 2) Información y/o medición, en cada caso se describe la definición, potencial impacto en los resultados y se plantean una serie de ejemplos que ayudan a su compresión. Uno de los efectos principales de la presencia de sesgos en investigación es que ocasiona un error de clasificación en los participantes, que puede ser diferencial o no, esto impacta los resultados al sobre o subestimarlos, en otras palabras, se encuentran efectos mayores a los reales o peor, no los encontramos cuando si existen. Para ilustrar el impacto de los sesgos, se revisan distintos escenarios que ejemplifican los casos de sobreestimación y subestimación que originan resultados poco confiables.
