1. Spatial Working Memory Counts: Evidence for a Specific Association between Visuo-Spatial Working Memory and Arithmetic in Children

Abstract

We examined the role of visuo-spatial working memory in different types of arithmetic ability in children. Previous research had suggested that arithmetic is not a single entity (Dowker, 2005, 2015), and also that visuo-spatial working memory is specifically involved in mathematical cognition (McKenzie et al., 2003) There has, however, been little research on the relationships between visuo-spatial working memory and different types of arithmetic. We tested 39 children in Year 2 (6 to 7 years) and Year 4 (8 to 9 years), taking measures of written arithmetic, mental oral arithmetic, and derived fact strategy use (the ability to derive unknown arithmetical facts from known facts, by using arithmetical principles). We also measured visuospatial working memory, verbal comprehension, and spelling ability. We investigated the relationships between visuo-spatial working memory and our three arithmetic measures, as well as spelling and verbal comprehension, to test whether these effects were specific to mathematical abilities. We found that visuo-spatial working memory was specifically associated with both verbal oral and mental written arithmetic, and but not with spelling or derived fact strategy use.

3. Classing enchantment : rethinking social identities with the material culture of weddings in England, 1836-1914

Abstract

Enchantment is an important category of analysis in social and cultural histories. Generally confined to histories of religion, scholars have extensively debated the limits of Weberian disenchantment: how industry, science, and capitalism dispelled the sublime, sacred, and divine forces and values that provided meaning, explanation, and moral frameworks for living in a world full of unexplained and unexplainable phenomena. Pushing against secularising impulses, this thesis argues for the continued relevance of enchantment for understanding experiences in modernity, albeit in altered and adapted forms. In particular, it asserts that a focus on enchantment offers fresh perspectives on class and social identities as industrial capitalism blurred social hierarchies and belonging. Methodologically, a focus on the material culture of weddings explores how the spiritual and moral qualities of objects illuminate the classed enchantments that shaped the boundaries of social inclusion and exclusion in Victorian and Edwardian England. As scholars increasingly reject class consciousness in favour of intersectional models, class analysis is often blind to the intangible, spiritual (religious and non-religious) dimensions of identity-formation and self- fashioning. Taking a cross-class perspective, this thesis explores contingent conceptualisations of the sublime, sacred, and divine and their importance for the ways that individuals understood and constructed their social worlds and relationships. In focusing on weddings, considerable attention is given to ideas of tradition in enchantment, how they supplied meaning, explanation, and moral guidance at transitional moments, and the significance of its constructed and ever-evolving nature for nuancing class identities. In focusing on objects, the study charts the growth of a commercial wedding market influenced by these classed enchantments and traditions: the implications of which underlie a wedding industry that comprises a vital part of UK economic, social, and cultural identity today.

Abstract

Relationships between students and external partners in work-integrated learning can vary and power dynamics, hierarchies and student agency have been under explored in research to date. Integrated research involving workintegrated learning, students as partners and transdisciplinarity presents an opportunity to enrich each of these fields. This paper presents the results of a case study of transdisciplinary project-based work-integrated learning in Australia. Our results highlight that reciprocity and the valuing of student knowledge are key elements in breaking down traditional power dynamics and enabling student agency, in line with the transdisciplinary principle of mutual learning. Participants who valued these elements in their relationship were less likely to frame the relationship in hierarchical terms and were more open to learning from one another. By empowering students to draw on their expertise and reframe challenges while also preparing partners for this kind of relationship, all parties can be positioned as learners within work-integrated learning. Abstract

The ability to control the crystallization behaviour (including its absence) of particles, be they biomolecules such as globular proteins, inorganic colloids, nanoparticles, or metal atoms in an alloy, is of both fundamental and technological importance. Much can be learnt from the exquisite control that biological systems exert over the behaviour of proteins, where protein crystallization and aggregation are generally suppressed, but where in particular instances complex crystalline assemblies can be formed that have a functional purpose. We also explore the insights that can be obtained from computational modelling, focussing on the subtle interplay between the interparticle interactions, the preferred local order and the resulting crystallization kinetics. In particular, we highlight the role played by ``frustration'', where there is an incompatibility between the preferred local order and the global crystalline order, using examples from atomic glass formers and model anisotropic particles., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

9. Interpreting the visual dynamics of religious manuscripts in England, 1260-1500

Abstract

In this thesis, I contend that the visual dynamics of religious manuscripts produced in England (1260-1500) had fundamental importance in shaping the cognitive and conceptual responses of readers who were not literate in Latin. I begin by establishing the primacy of Latin paraliturgical materials, used for teaching beginning readers the preliminary skills needed to recite Latin prayers. In Books of Hours, all the visual components of the page combined to inculcate a distinctive mode of reading, close to monastic lectio, which was to influence Middle English devotional writing. In my second chapter, I demonstrate that thirteenth-century pastoral writings such as the Manuel des Péchés placed readers in intimate contact with modes of reading translated from the Latin, and that this mode of reading endured in popularity into the fifteenth century. My third chapter considers the translation of the French of England of the Manuel into Middle English as Handlyng Synne, and the transmission of that Middle English text in late fourteenth- and fifteenth-century manuscripts. Handlyng Synne repositions the French of England as a language exclusive to ‘clerkes,’ and this repositioning creates a space in which Latin becomes almost vernacularised. In the visual dynamics of the Handlyng Synne manuscripts, we see evidence of readers who were competent to interpret Latin submerged in Middle English. In Nicholas Love’s Mirror, paraliturgical Latin again comes to the fore, in visual dynamics that construct a space for Middle English readers on the margins of Latin textual culture. In my final chapter, I look at the late-medieval manuscripts of the romance Robert of Sicily, finding in them complex interactions between languages, which shed light on the text’s central exploration of the process of translation and of the positions of Latin and Middle English. I conclude that, despite medieval writers’ rhetorical distinction of the three main languages of medieval England from one another, Latin models of reading were transmitted from paraliturgical contexts, from texts written in the French of England, into Middle English manuscripts, whose visual contents are constantly in contact with Latin.

12. Social Vulnerability to Climate Change in California

Abstract

The State of California faces a range of impacts from global climate change, including increases in extreme heat, wildfires, coastal flooding, and erosion. Changes are also likely to occur in air quality, water availability, and the spread of infectious diseases. To date, a great deal of research has been done to forecast the physical effects of climate change, while less attention has been given to the factors that make different populations more or less vulnerable to harm from such changes. While disaster events may not discriminate, impacts on human populations are shaped by intervening conditions that determine the human impact of the event and the specific needs for preparedness, response, and recovery. In this study, the authors analyzed the potential impacts of climate change by using recent downscaled climate model outputs to create a variety of statistics and visualizations that show their distribution across the state. To understand how the population exposed to these impacts will be affected, social vulnerability – defined as the susceptibility of a given population to harm from exposure to a hazard, directly affecting its ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover, must be evaluated. The researchers developed a new climate vulnerability index to indicate the social vulnerability of a region’s population to climate‐related harm. The index combines 19 indicators into one overall climate vulnerability score and includes factors specifically related to climate impacts, such as air conditioner ownership, childhood obesity, percentage of tree cover, pre‐term births, workers in outdoor occupations, and others. The authors present a series of maps showing where social vulnerability to climate change is greatest, and where it intersects with the most severe projected climate change impacts. The most significant risk from climate change occurs where there are large groups of people exposed to a climate‐related hazard and where there is high social vulnerability.   Understanding vulnerability factors and the populations that exhibit these factors are critical for crafting effective climate change policies and response strategies. They are also important to the emerging study of climate justice, which is the concept that no group of people should disproportionately bear the burden of climate impacts or the costs of mitigation and adaptation.

13. Community-Based Climate Adaptation Planning: Case Study of Oakland, California

Abstract

There is growing recognition that some degree of climate change is now unavoidable and all regions, sectors, and people are vulnerable to climate change impacts to varying degrees. In response, a variety of stakeholders, from local governments to social justice groups and corporations, are beginning to think about adaptation strategies to help reduce their risk. Adaptation planning it still in its infancy and local governments are struggling with how to navigate the planning process. A handful of communities in the United States have embarked on planning efforts and have engaged the local community in some manner. Here, we provide a detailed analysis of climate impacts, vulnerabilities, and adaptation options in a major economic center: Oakland, California. The goal of this study is to inform the development of a comprehensive and equitable climate adaptation plan effort. This research project engages active members of the Oakland Climate Action Coalition, including community-based organizations and resident leaders, in analyzing both the impacts of, and social vulnerabilities to, climate change. Further, it enumerates adaptation strategies that can be implemented at the local level, discusses their advantages and disadvantages, and identifies social equity concerns. Finally, it identifies trends and best practices in climate adaptation planning processes, focusing specifically on their efficacy in engaging the broader community and in addressing the needs of all residents, especially the most vulnerable. This paper is meant to serve as a tool for both city planners and community members everywhere, as they work in tandem to develop more equitable and resilient cities for the climate of the future.

Abstract

The Y chromosome carries information about the demography of paternal lineages, and thus, can prove invaluable for retracing both the evolutionary trajectory of wild animals and the breeding history of domesticates. In horses, the Y chromosome shows a limited, but highly informative, sequence diversity, supporting the increasing breeding influence of Oriental lineages during the last 1500 years. Here, we augment the primary horse Y-phylogeny, which is currently mainly based on modern horse breeds of economic interest, with haplotypes (HT) segregating in remote horse populations around the world. We analyze target enriched sequencing data of 5 Mb of the Y chromosome from 76 domestic males, together with 89 whole genome sequenced domestic males and five Przewalski's horses from previous studies. The resulting phylogeny comprises 153 HTs defined by 2966 variants and offers unprecedented resolution into the history of horse paternal lineages. It reveals the presence of a remarkable number of previously unknown haplogroups in Mongolian horses and insular populations. Phylogenetic placement of HTs retrieved from 163 archaeological specimens further indicates that most of the present-day Y-chromosomal variation evolved after the domestication process that started around 4200 years ago in the Western Eurasian steppes. Our comprehensive phylogeny significantly reduces ascertainment bias and constitutes a robust evolutionary framework for analyzing horse population dynamics and diversity.

Unsafe abortion is a neglected health care problem, particularly in many low-resource settings such as Ethiopia. Abortions are, however, one of the safest procedures if performed by a trained professional using the correct methods. In accordance with a motivation to task-shift abortion provision to more mid-level health providers and increase access to safe abortion services, the Maternity Foundation have developed a module in Safe Abortion as an addition to their perinatal mHealth tool, the Safe Delivery App. Before the Safe Abortion module can be publicly released and tested for its influence in maternal health outcomes, according to the Kirkpatrick model, target user perceptions of it must first be explored. This study aims Using inspiration from The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, from July to September 2022, this exploratory pilot study used an explanatory-sequential design of mixed-methods to explore how the Safe Delivery App’s new Safe Abortion module is perceived by abortion care providers in Addis Ababa, in terns of usability, acceptability and feasibility. The SA module’s usability was interpreted to be positive, in that it was easy to use and understand, well-functioning. The SA module’s acceptability was also interpreted as positive as it was considered to be useful on several parameters relating to achieving gains in SAC job performance. The feasibility of the SA module is inconclusive, as it is both strengthened by the convenience and accessibility of mHealth interventions, and incapacitated by limitations of the health facility resources required to effectively provide SAC. In addition, social influence was also found to be an important variable, as negative and stigmatising attitudes surrounding SAC care services impacts upon effective implementation of a SA module and SAC services in Addis Ababa. Abstract

Objective: The HOME BP (Home and Online Management and Evaluation of Blood Pressure) trial aimed to test a digital intervention for hypertension management in primary care by combining self-monitoring of blood pressure with guided self-management. Design: Unmasked randomised controlled trial with automated ascertainment of primary endpoint. Setting: 76 general practices in the United Kingdom. Participants: 622 people with treated but poorly controlled hypertension (>140/90 mm Hg) and access to the internet. Interventions: Participants were randomised by using a minimisation algorithm to self-monitoring of blood pressure with a digital intervention (305 participants) or usual care (routine hypertension care, with appointments and drug changes made at the discretion of the general practitioner; 317 participants). The digital intervention provided feedback of blood pressure results to patients and professionals with optional lifestyle advice and motivational support. Target blood pressure for hypertension, diabetes, and people aged 80 or older followed UK national guidelines. Main outcome measures: The primary outcome was the difference in systolic blood pressure (mean of second and third readings) after one year, adjusted for baseline blood pressure, blood pressure target, age, and practice, with multiple imputation for missing values. Results: After one year, data were available from 552 participants (88.6%) with imputation for the remaining 70 participants (11.4%). Mean blood pressure dropped from 151.7/86.4 to 138.4/80.2 mm Hg in the intervention group and from 151.6/85.3 to 141.8/79.8 mm Hg in the usual care group, giving a mean difference in systolic blood pressure of −3.4 mm Hg (95% confidence interval −6.1 to −0.8 mm Hg) and a mean difference in diastolic blood pressure of −0.5 mm Hg (−1.9 to 0.9 mm Hg). Results were comparable in the complete case analysis and adverse effects were similar between groups. Within trial costs showed an incremental cost effectiveness ratio of £11 ($15, €12; 95% confidence interval £6 to £29) per mm Hg reduction. Conclusions: The HOME BP digital intervention for the management of hypertension by using self-monitored blood pressure led to better control of systolic blood pressure after one year than usual care, with low incremental costs. Implementation in primary care will require integration into clinical workflows and consideration of people who are digitally excluded. Trial registration: ISRCTN13790648.

Abstract

This study examines the short-term effect of goodwill impairment announcements on companies' stock prices. The substantial changes in accounting rules regarding goodwill impairment in recent years, as well as the expected increase in goodwill impairment announcements given the current COVID-19-driven economic downturn, make this evaluation relevant. The results of this study indicate that after the adoption of the most recent substantial change to goodwill accounting, accounting standards update (ASU) 2011-08, the stock price reaction to announcements of goodwill impairment is not statistically significant. Prior literature found that under previous accounting regulations there was a negative stock price reaction to impairment announcements, and that this effect had been decreasing as updates relaxing prior regulations' stringent testing procedures were implemented. The results of this study suggest that investors, following the recent accounting changes, find no new information in impairment announcements. these findings help inform decisions on whether the cost, complexity, and burden of goodwill impairment accounting can provide a compensating benefit. 44. The effect of SB-269970, a 5-HT7 receptor antagonist, on 5-HT release from serotonergic terminals and cell bodies

Abstract

1 The presence of 5-HT7 receptor mRNA and protein in 5-HT neurons suggests that this receptor may act as a 5-HT autoreceptor. In this study, the effect of the 5-HT7 receptor antagonist, SB-269970 ((R)-1-[3-hydroxy phenyl)sulfonyl]-2-[2-(4-methyl-1-piperidinyl)ethyl]pyrrolidine), was investigated on 5-HT release in the guinea-pig and rat cortex and the rat dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), using the techniques of in vitro [3H]-5-HT release or fast cyclic voltammetry, respectively. 2 Cortical slices were loaded with [3H]-5-HT and release was evoked by electrical stimulation. 5-CT inhibited the evoked release of [3H]-5-HT in a concentration-dependent manner. SB-269970 had no significant effect on [3H]-5-HT release while the 5-HT1B receptor antagonist, SB-224289 significantly potentiated [3H]-5-HT release. In addition, SB-269970 was unable to attenuate the 5-CT-induced inhibition of release while SB-224289 produced a rightward shift of the 5-CT response, generating estimated pKB values of 7.8 and 7.6 at the guinea-pig and rat terminal 5-HT autoreceptors respectively. 3 Rat DRN slices were electrically stimulated and the evoked 5-HT efflux detected by voltammetric analysis. 8-OH-DPAT inhibited evoked 5-HT efflux and was fully reversed by WAY 100635. SB-269970 had no effect on either 5-HT efflux per se or 8-OH-DPAT-induced inhibition of 5-HT efflux. In addition, 5-CT inhibited 5-HT efflux in a concentration-dependent manner. SB-269970 was unable to attenuate the 5-CT-induced inhibition of 5-HT efflux. 4 In conclusion, we were unable to provide evidence to suggest a 5-HT autoreceptor role for 5-HT7 receptors.
