The Pacific, Antarctic, and Macquarie lithospheric plates diverge from the Macquarie Triple Junction (MTJ) in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, south of Macquarie Island. Morphobathymetric, magnetic, and gravity data have been used to understand the evolution of the three accretionary/transform boundaries that meet at the MTJ. Plate velocities, estimated near the MTJ and averaged over the past 3 m.y., indicate an unstable ridge–fault–fault triple junction. The long life (>6 m.y.) of this configuration can be attributed to a rapid increase in spreading asymmetry along the Southeast Indian Ridge segment as it approaches the MTJ, and to transtension along the southernmost strand of the Macquarie–Pacific transform boundary. A major change in plate motion triggered the development of the Macquarie plate at ca. 6 Ma and makes clear the recent evolution of the MTJ, including (1) shortening of the Southeast Indian Ridge segment; (2) formation of the westernmost Pacific-Antarctic Ridge, which increased its length over time; and (3) lengthening of the two transform boundaries converging in the MTJ. The clockwise change of the Pacific-Antarctic motion (ca. 12–10 Ma) led to complex geodynamic evolution of the plate boundary to the east of the triple junction, with fragmentation of the long-offset Emerald transform fault and its replacement over a short time interval (1–2 m.y.) with closely spaced, highly variable transform offsets that were joined by short ridge segments with time-varying asymmetries in the spreading rates.

A comparative analysis of bedform fields along the submarine flanks of insular volcanoes, characterized by different morpho-structural settings, volcanic and meteo-marine regimes (Vanuatu, Kermadec, Bismark, Madeira and Aeolian archipelagos), is presented here to provide insights on the size distribution, morpho-dynamic and genesis of such bedforms. Two main types of bedforms are recognized according to their size, location and preconditioning/triggering processes. Small-scale bedforms have wavelengths of tens to hundreds of metres and wave heights of metres. Because of their small-size, they are typically not recognizable at water depths greater than 400 m from vessel-mounted bathymetric surveys. Few examples of small-scale bedforms are reported from upper volcanic flanks, where steep gradients commonly hinder their formation. Their recognition is mostly limited to the thalweg of shallow and flat-bottomed channels that carve the insular shelf on slope gradients

We quantitatively compare three precisely positioned, high‐resolution multi‐beam bathymetry maps in the delta front and pro delta sectors (0.3 to 10 m water depth) of Po di Pila, the most active of the modern Po Delta five branches. By investigating the detailed morphology of the prograding modern Po Delta, we shed new light on the mechanisms that control the topset to foreset transition in clinothems and show the temporal and spatial complexity of a delta and its pro delta slope, under the impact of oceanographic processes. This study documents the ephemeral nature of the rollover point at the transition between sandy topset (fluvial, delta plain to mouth‐bar) and muddy seaward‐dipping foreset deposits advancing, in this case, in >20 m of water depth. Three multibeam surveys, acquired between 2013 and 2016, document the complexity in space and time of the topset and foreset regions and their related morphology, a diagnostic feature that could not be appreciated using solely 2D, even very high‐resolution, seismic profiles. In addition, the comparison of bathymetric surveys gathered with one‐year lapses shows the migration of subaqueous sand dunes on the clinothem topset, the formation of ephemeral cut‐and‐fill features at the rollover point (few m below mean sea level), the presence of collapse depressions derived by sagging of sediments and fluid expulsion (possibly induced by storm waves) on the foreset, and splays of sand likely reflecting gravity flows on the lower foreset. Though the modern Po Delta is anthropogenic in many respects, its subaqueous clinothem can be studied as a scale model for ancient clinothems that are less resolved geometrically and far less constrained chronologically.]

Underwater photogrammetry provides a means of generating high-resolution products such as dense point clouds, 3D models, and orthomosaics with centimetric scale resolutions. Underwater photogrammetric models can be used to monitor the growth and expansion of benthic communities, including the assessment of the conservation status of seagrass beds and their change over time (time lapse micro-bathymetry) with OBIA classifications (Object-Based Image Analysis). However, one of the most complex aspects of underwater photogrammetry is the accuracy of the 3D models for both the horizontal and vertical components used to estimate the surfaces and volumes of biomass. In this study, a photogrammetry-based micro-bathymetry approach was applied to monitor Posidonia oceanica restoration actions. A procedure for rectifying both the horizontal and vertical elevation data was developed using soundings from high-resolution multibeam bathymetry. Furthermore, a 3D trilateration technique was also tested to collect Ground Control Points (GCPs) together with reference scale bars, both used to estimate the accuracy of the models and orthomosaics. The root mean square error (RMSE) value obtained for the horizontal planimetric measurements was 0.05 m, while the RMSE value for the depth was 0.11 m. Underwater photogrammetry, if properly applied, can provide very high-resolution and accurate models for monitoring seagrass restoration actions for ecological recovery and can be useful for other research purposes in geological and environmental monitoring.

This system is related to a northward paleo-bottom current, similar to the present-day modified-Levantine Intermediate Water (modified-LIW) flowing from the Messina Strait. In this work, we show results from an integrated analysis of descriptive oceanography, high-resolution seismic profiles and core data (i.e., grain size, foraminiferal assemblages, tephrostratigraphy and AMS radiocarbon dating) collected from the crest and moat sectors of drift deposits. The studied succession formed since the mid Holocene, under the action of the modified-LIW and the stratigraphic architecture indicates an upslope migration of the moat and rather stable position of the crest sector. Grain-size features recorded from two sediment cores indicate the occurrence of a succession of complete bi-gradational sand-rich contourite sequences. Sandy facies were observed both as lag deposits formed in active moat channel and as coarser intervals of bi-gradational sequences forming drift deposits close to its crest. Their occurrence would highlight that upper slope environments impacted by intermediate water masses and proximal to sandy sources may represent favorable settings for accumulation of sandy sediment. The moat sector is characterized by a more complex stratigraphic record, where either moat sedimentation or lateral deposition of finer sediment occur, suggesting that further investigation is required to better understand this complex element of contourite systems. Based on available age information, some of the bi-gradational sequences probably formed during the Dark Age Cold Period, providing example of a small-scale cyclicity of contourite deposition, likely related to short-term (possibly multicentennial scale) fluctuations of the paleo modified-LIW. According to age constraints and analysis of foraminiferal assemblages, these fluctuations were likely governed by climate variations, with a weaker activity during warmer periods and faster currents during colder events, Core LGT5 was collected during the Gioia77 cruise funded by the Eurofleets2 Project. Differential GNSS positioning on vessels is of considerable interest in various fields of application as navigation aids, precision positioning for geophysical surveys or sampling purposes especially when high resolution bathymetric surveys are conducted. However ship positioning must be considered a kinematic survey with all the associated problems. The possibility of using high-precision differential GNSS receivers in navigation is of increasing interest, also due to the very recent availability of low-cost differential receivers that may soon replace classic navigation ones based on the less accurate point positioning technique. The availability of greater plano-altimetric accuracy, however, requires an increasingly better understanding of planimetric and altimetric reference systems. In particular, the results allow preliminary considerations on the congruence between terrestrial reference systems (which the GNSS survey can easily refer to) and marine reference systems (connected to National Tidegauge Network). In spite of the fluctuations due to the physiological continuous variation of the ship's attitude, GNSS plot faithfully followed the trend of the tidal variations and highlighted the shifts between GNSS plot and the tide gauges due to the different materialization of the relative reference systems.

La carta batimorfologica dell’Adriatico Settentrionale che include anche le lagune di Venezia e di Grado e Marano ed è il risultato di una collaborazione tecnico-scientifica tra vari Enti, tra cui il CNR e l’IIM (Istituto Idrografico Militare). La carta è composta da un corpo principale che illustra il modello di elevazione dei fondali marini (risoluzione di 200m) derivato dall’integrazione di tutti i dati acquisiti con ecoscandagli a fascio singolo (single-beam) con una esagerazione verticale di 30x, necessaria ad evidenziare le principali caratteristiche geomorfologiche della piattaforma Nord Adriatica. La carta batimetrica include una serie di poligoni blu (key map) che illustrano la copertura dei dati a maggiore risoluzione raccolti con ecoscandaglio multifascio (Multibeam) acquisiti dal CNR ISMAR, IGAG e dall’IIM, sia lungo costa che in mare aperto, dal 2005 ad oggi. Il rilievo Multibeam della laguna di Venezia, include le tre bocche di porto di Venezia, Chioggia e Malamocco (Madricardo et.al, 2017) è stato integrato al dato Singlebeam, visibile nel corpo carta principale. The distribution and morphological characteristics of the shelves around Salina Island have been analyzed and integrated with observations from onshore geological field studies in order to improve knowledge about its evolution, and to demonstrate how shelf width/depth can be used as proxies for reconstructing the development of the volcanic edifice. Insular shelves form essentially through marine erosion of volcanic centres during stages of reduced or inactive volcanism, and are representative of their original extension. Shelves having larger widths (commonly > 1000 m) and deeper edges (over 125 m depth) experienced wave erosion during successive cycles of sea-level fluctuations and subsidence after their formation, thus being indicative of a relatively older age of the eroded volcanic centres. Accordingly, we document offshore Salina the occurrence of presently submerged and largely dismantled volcanic centres (namely Pizzo Capo North and Fossa delle Felci South) predating the oldest subaerial products exposed on the adjacent coastal sectors. These offshore centres have subsided after their erosion and are no more documented on land. Furthermore, the finding of the largest and deepest shelf around the subaerial remnants of Pizzo di Corvo volcanic edifice allows relating it to an earlier stage of evolution of Salina, shedding light on contradictory radiometric ages on land. Narrower shelves (commonly < 1000 m) indicate a lower evolutionary maturity with respect to the larger ones; they are, in fact, formed along the sectors of the island where younger volcanic products are exposed, such as to the north and south of Monte dei Porri. The depths of the shelf edges, mostly at - 110 m (in the areas not affected by later mass-wasting), suggest that these coastal sectors were relatively stable or even slightly uplifted after erosion during Last Glacial Maximum. Moreover, several interacting factors (such as lithology of volcanic products, fetch and exposure to prevailing storms, degree of submarine erosion, relative sea level changes) have been taken into account to explain the morphological setting of the different shelf and coastal sectors of Salina. On the whole, our results show the importance of integrated field and marine studies to unravel the geological evolution of insular volcanoes and to obtain inferences on their vertical mobility.

Multibeam bathymetry, high-resolution seismic profiles and seafloor samples have been analyzed to characterize depositional and erosional dynamics recorded pro-deltaic deposits and outer shelf sediments along of a sector of the NE Sicilian margin (southern Tyrrhenian Sea). The deltaic deposits cover an area of ca. 15 km 2 in front of the Mazzarra River, and are morphologically characterized by waveforms trending overall along strike and incised cross-strike gullies of variable length. The gullies are shallow and characterized by small, coaxial erosive scours in the inner-middle shelf, whereas they become larger and deeper in the outer shelf-upper slope, in relation to the marked increase of slope gradients at the shelf break. Here, the wider gullies are characterized by a frame of crescent-shaped bedforms interpreted as cyclic steps, indicating the occurrence of sedimentary gravity flows in supercritical regime. Prodelta waveforms are widespread between − 50 and − 120 m, with wave lengths of 34–110 m and wave heights of 0.5–3 m. Morphometric characterization and spatial distribution of the waveforms suggests a main role in their genesis played by hyperpycnal flows, although we cannot discard the possible effect of internal waves or slow deformation processes (i.e., creep). Depositional and erosional features similar to those observed on the seafloor are evident in the subsurface stratigraphy, revealing the onset and growth of the Mazzarra Delta since the Last Glacial Maximum. The post-glacial sea level rise caused lateral shifts of the Mazzarra River mouth controlling migration of depositional lobes and intensity of seafloor incision and sediment reworking, ultimately resulting in the observed wavy bedforms extending from the inner shelf to the upper slope.

The SEISMOFAULTS project (www.seismofaults.it) was set up in 2016 with the general plan of exploring the seismicity of marine areas using deep seafloor observatories. The activity of the first two years (Seismofaults 2017 and 2018) consisted of the installation of a geophysical-geochemical temporary monitoring network over the Ionian Sea floor. Eleven ocean-bottom seismometers with hydrophones (OBS/H) and two seafloor geochemical-geophysical multiparametric observatories were deployed to: (1) identify seismically active faults; (2) identify potential geochemical precursors of earthquakes; and (3) understand possible cause–effect relationships between earthquakes and submarine slides. Furthermore, five gravity cores were collected from the Ionian Sea bottom and ~4082 km of geophysical acquisition, including multibeam and single channel seismic reflection data, were acquired for a total of 4970 km 2 high-resolution multibeam bathymetry. Using Niskin bottles, four water column samples were collected: two corresponding at the location of the two multiparametric observatories (i.e., along presumably-active fault zones), one corresponding at a recently discovered mud volcano, and one located above a presumably-active fault zone away from the other three sites. Preliminary results show: (1) a significant improvement in the quality and quantity of seismological records; (2) endogenous venting from presumably active faults; (3) active geofluid venting from a recently-discovered mud volcano; and (4) the correct use of most submarine devices. Preliminary results from the SEISMOFAULTS project show and confirm the potential of multidisciplinary marine studies, particularly in geologically active areas like southern Italy and the Mediterranean Sea.

Discoveries from multibeam bathymetry and geochemical surveys performed off Zannone Island (western Pontine Archipelago, Tyrrhenian Sea) provide evidence of an undocumented hydrothermal field characterized by ongoing fluid emissions and morphologically complex giant depressions located in shallow water ( 250 m) that host pockmarks, mounds, small cones and active fluid vents, and which are interpreted as complex fluid escape features developed both through vigorous-explosive events and steady seepage. Their spatial distribution suggests that the NE-SW trending faults bounding the Ponza-Zannone structural high and the shallow fractured basement are favorable conditions for the upward migration of hydrothermal fluids. Moreover, we performed a detailed geochemical study to investigate the source of the hydrothermal fluids. The geochemical signature of the collected fluids provides information of active CO2-dominated degassing with a significant contribution of mantle volatiles, with measured 3He/4He values > 3.0 Ra that are similar to those recorded at Stromboli and Panarea volcanoes. The hydrothermal system produces volatiles that may originate from residual magma batches, similar to the Pleistocene trachytes cropping out in the SE sector of Ponza Island, that were probably intruded in the shallow crustal levels and never erupted. The discovery of the Zannone hydrothermal field updates the record of active hydrothermal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Moreover, the recognition of several giant hydrothermal depressions characterized by a complex morphology is peculiar for the Mediterranean Sea.

The Late Quatemary architecture of the upper slope-shelf sector of the Calabro-Tyrrhenian continental margin off Capo Vaticano was reconstructed to decipher the interaction of along-slope and down-slope sedimentary processes, based on the analysis of very high-resolution single-channel seismic profiles and multibeam bathymetry. Both along-slope bottom currents and downslope gravity processes influenced the stratigraphic architecture of the margin during the last eustatic cycle, locally forming a mixed turbidite and contourite system. Along-slope processes formed elongated drifts located on the upper continental slope and outer shelf, while gravity-driven down-slope processes formed mass-transport deposits and turbidite systems with erosive channels, locally indenting the present-day shelf. Several slide events affected the elongated drifts and failure processes appear to be dominated by translational sliding that affect the upper 10-20 m of the stratigraphic record, with glide plains developed within contourite deposits. The most striking feature is the Capo Vaticano slide complex, which displays a large spatial coverage (area of about 18 km(2)), between ca - 190 m and 500 m and is composed of several intersecting slide scars and overlapping deposits. These characteristics are peculiar for the Tyrrhenian continental margins, where slide events developed in open-slope areas are usually less complex and smaller in size. This would indicate that high sedimentation rates and occurrence of contourite deposits can represent a preconditioning factor for medium-large scale slope instability on the Tyrrhenian margins. Volcanic‐intrusive complexes often formed along lateral slab edges as a consequence of subduction‐induced mantle flow. We investigate this process in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea by integrating multibeam bathymetry, seismic‐reflection data, regional magnetic anomalies data, and seismological data. The interpretation of the data highlights the presence of magmatic intrusions that locally reach the seafloor forming volcanic edifices. Chimneys, lava flows, and laccoliths are observed beneath and surrounding the volcanoes. The emplacement and cooling of the magma occurred during the Brunhes Chron. The volcanoes are not active even if the hydrothermal activity occurs. The volcanic‐intrusive complex can be subdivided in a western domain (Diamante and Enotrio seamounts) where strike‐slip transpressional faults deform the volcanic edifices and an eastern domain (Ovidio volcanic seamounts) characterized by flat‐topped volcanic edifices. The flat‐topped morphology is the result of the interplay between volcanism, erosion, sedimentation, and sea‐level change. The Ovidio volcanic seamounts formed in an area that experienced at least 60 m of subsidence. Magnetic signatures over the northern side of the Ovidio and Diamante seamounts highlight the presence of a deep‐rooted, magnetized feeding system remnant. Volcanic edifices extend above a magma feeding system, characterized by low Vp/Vs ratios. The Diamante‐Enotrio‐Ovidio volcanic‐intrusive complex formed as a consequence of the ascent of subduction‐induced mantle flow originated in the northern‐western edge of the retreating Ionian slab. We speculate that the magma ascent was controlled by a strike‐slip deformation belt, which accommodated the bulk of the shear strain resulting from the formation of a roughly E‐W trending, Subduction‐Transform Edges Propagator fault.

The Ionian Sea in southern Italy is at the center of active interaction and convergence between the Eurasian and African–Adriatic plates in the Mediterranean. This area is seismically active with instrumentally and/or historically recorded Mw>7.0 earthquakes, and it is affected by recently discovered long strike-slip faults across the active Calabrian accretionary wedge. Many mud volcanoes occur on top of the wedge. A recently discovered one (called the Bortoluzzi Mud Volcano or BMV) was surveyed during the Seismofaults 2017 cruise (May 2017). High-resolution bathymetric backscatter surveys, seismic reflection profiles, geochemical and earthquake data, and a gravity core are used here to geologically, geochemically, and geophysically characterize this structure. The BMV is a circular feature ≃22 m high and ≃1100 m in diameter with steep slopes (up to a dip of 22∘). It sits atop the Calabrian accretionary wedge and a system of flower-like oblique-slip faults that are probably seismically active as demonstrated by earthquake hypocentral and focal data. Geochemistry of water samples from the seawater column on top of the BMV shows a significant contamination of the bottom waters from saline (evaporite-type) CH4-dominated crustal-derived fluids similar to the fluids collected from a mud volcano located on the Calabria mainland over the same accretionary wedge. These results attest to the occurrence of open crustal pathways for fluids through the BMV down to at least the Messinian evaporites at about −3000 m. This evidence is also substantiated by helium isotope ratios and by comparison and contrast with different geochemical data from three seawater columns located over other active faults in the Ionian Sea area. One conclusion is that the BMV may be useful for tracking the seismic cycle of active faults through geochemical monitoring. Due to the widespread diffusion of mud volcanoes in seismically active settings, this study contributes to indicating a future path for the use of mud volcanoes in the monitoring and mitigation of natural hazards.

The integrated analysis of high-resolution multibeam bathymetry and single-channel seismic profiles around Salina Island allowed us to characterize the stratigraphic architecture of the insular shelf. The shelf is formed by a gently-sloping erosive surface carved on the volcanic bedrock, mostly covered by sediments organized in a suite of terraced bodies, i.e. submarine depositional terraces. Based on their position on the shelf, depth range of their edge and inner geometry, different orders of terraces can be distinguished. The shallowest terrace (near-shore terrace) is a sedimentary prograding wedge, whose formation can be associated to the downward transport of sediments from the surf zone and shoreface during stormy conditions. According to the range depth of the terrace edge (i.e., 10–25 m, compatible with the estimated present-day, local storm-wave base level in the central and western Mediterranean), the formation of this wedge can be attributed to the present-day highstand. By assuming a similar genesis for the deeper terraces, mid-shelf terraces having the edge at depths of 40–50 m and 70–80 m can be attributed to the late and early stages of the Post-LGM transgression, respectively. Finally, the deepest terrace (shelf-edge terrace) has the edge at depths of 130–160 m, being thus referable to the lowstand occurred at ca. 20 ka. Based on the variability of edge depth in the different sectors, we also show how lowstand terraces can be used to provide insights on the recent vertical movements that affected Salina edifice in the last 20 ka, highlighting more generally their possible use for neo-tectonic studies elsewhere. Moreover, being these terraces associated to different paleo-sea levels, they can be used to constrain the relative age of the different erosive stages affecting shallow-water sectors.

The collection of high-resolution multibeam bathymetry, single-channel seismic profiles, TOBI side scan sonar data, and gravity cores allowed the characterization of the main morpho-sedimentary processes acting along the lower reach of the shelf-indenting Gioia-Mesima canyon-channel system (GMS) and the surrounding continental slope (southern Tyrrhenian Sea). This last area, developing across a depth range of 1000–1700 m, shows a complex morphology due to the interaction between downslope gravitative processes (mainly turbidite sheet flows) and abrupt changes in slope gradients related to tectonically-controlled scarps. Particularly, several erosive-depositional features (levee deposits, sediment undulations, channels) have been related to overflow processes from the northern flank of the GMS, although the lower reach of the GMS is characterized by strong entrenchment (canyon height ranging from 120 to 270 m) and low sinuosity. Morphological and seismic stratigraphy data indicate that the distribution and dimension of these features vary in response both to the proximity to the external levee of the GMS and to the topographic gradient of the lower continental slope. Particularly, we were able to discriminate between a gently sloping sector (on average 1.5°) dominated by sedimentary bypass of the turbidity currents and a steeper sector (about 3°), where the erosional capability of these currents seems to increase. Indeed, three channels, 4,3–6,5 km long and up to 20 m deep, incise this steeper sector, running parallel to each other at a distance of 1250–1500 m. To support the capability of overbanking flow in producing these channels, we used a physical model for the ignition of turbidity currents that provides realistic values for the ignitive state of the overbanking turbidity flows. More generally, the methodological approach used in this study may be useful to provide constraints on the genesis and evolution of erosive-depositional features in other tectonically-controlled margins, where sedimentary gravity flows interact with an uneven morphology.

Recent underwater archaeological surveys recovered hundreds of flint artefacts between depths of 18 and 21 m at cala tramontana, a small bay located in the eastern part of pantelleria island. Most of the flint artefactsindicate debitage, and are characterized by cores and flakes without any specific morphology. Different lithic tools were also identified, such as fragments of blades, truncations, end-scrapers, points and crested blades. Aninitial hypothesis is that this lithic industry represents the oldest traces of human visitation to the island,possibly related to the exploitation of the nearby obsidian source, and favoured because of the sheltered coastalconfiguration of cala tramontana and cala levante with respect to the dominant winds and related storms. However,the present-day coastal setting in the bay is rather inhospitable, with high cliffs and difficult marine access.in contrast, palaeo-landscape reconstructions by means of high-resolution multibeam bathymetry reveal thepossible presence of a small palaeobeach in the inner part of the bay when the sea level was 15 m lower than at present.By comparing this palaeo-sea level with the eustatic curve (and by excluding possible vertical movements), we roughly estimate an age of the lithic industry of 9.6-7.7 cal ka BP © The geological society of london 2016.

Archaeological and instrumental data indicate that the southern sector of the volcanic island of Lipari has been subsiding for the last 2100 years due to isostatic and tectonic factors, at variable rates of up to ~11 mm/yr. Based on this data, a detailed marine flooding scenario for 2100 A.D. is provided for the bay of Marina Lunga in the eastern part of the island from (i) an ultra-high-resolution Digital Terrain and Marine Model (DTMM) generated from multibeam bathymetry (MB) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), (ii) the rate of land subsidence from GPS data and (iii) the regional sea-level projections of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). When land subsidence is considered, the upper bound of sea-level rise is estimated at 1.36 m and 1.60 m for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate change scenarios, respectively. Here, we show the expected impact of marine flooding at Lipari for the next 85 years and discuss the hazard implications for the population living along the shore. Submarine canyons along the Ionian Calabria margin indent large shelf sectors as the coalescing of smaller failure scarps progresses under the control of tectonic deformation and high sedimentation rates, promoted by regional uplift and rejuvenation of the drainage basin. The Punta Alice Canyon and the Ciro Canyon show such complex canyon heads, almost completely eroding the shelf and thus affecting sediment pathways along and across strike. Wavy bedforms of variable shape and size are observed both outside and inside the two canyon systems, providing an indication of how sediment is sourced and transported. We analyse the distribution of bedforms in order to define how both open shelf currents and confined sediment fluxes contribute to their formation outside and inside canyons. We also remark on the importance of the orientation of canyon heads and channels relative to flow direction of currents, and of slope failure as a sediment source.

Large-scale bedforms, with wavelengths ranging from several tens of metres to over 1 km and wave heights ranging from a few metres to tens/hundreds of metres were observed on multibeam bathymetry in the median and lower part of submarine volcaniclastic aprons surrounding the Aeolian Islands, where a marked decrease in slope gradients below 4°–8° is present. The bedforms are characterized by crest-lines with an arcuate or sinuous shape, trending roughly perpendicular to the maximum slope direction. Based on their size, geometry and texture, they can be interpreted as coarse-grained sediment waves, which are also found in the proximal part of other modern and ancient turbidite systems. In the study areas, they are found within channelized features or on fan-shaped features lying at or close to major sedimentary sources, such as subaerial/submarine depressions left by sector collapses.

Small-scale crescent-shaped bedforms were identified within flat-bottomed channelized features carving the submarine volcanic flanks of the Stromboli and Salina edifices. The bedforms are downslope-asymmetric, with a sub-horizontal stoss side and a steep lee side. They have a wavelength of tens of metres and a wave height of metres, and their crest-lines are roughly perpendicular to the maximum slope. Based on their size, texture and similarities to other bedforms, they can be interpreted as cyclic steps, i.e. a class of upslope-migrating turbidite sediment waves. Although their genesis must be similar, some differences are observed between the two cases. At Stromboli, repeated multibeam surveys at an 11-year scale showed a significant upslope migration of the bedforms because they lie on the bottom of a channel connected to active coastal dynamics, whose headwall is located at a few metres depth. By contrast, the surveys showed no significant morphological variations at Salina, where the bedforms are larger than at Stromboli and the channel headwall is located at about -100 m, suggesting that these feature are mostly inactive at present.

High-resolution multibeam bathymetry have revealed coaxial trains of crescent-shaped bedforms within the heads of channelized features lying in shallow-water sectors along the tectonically-controlled Calabrian Margin. These bedforms have wavelengths of tens or a few hundreds of metres and wave heights of a few metres, and their crest-lines trend perpendicular to the maximum slope gradients. Repeated multibeam surveys carried out in 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2013 showed a rapid and significant morphological evolution of the channel’s floors, with the generation or upslope migration of the bedforms. Based on their size, upslope migration and similarities to crescent-shaped bedforms recognized in other active canyon heads, these features can be interpreted as cyclic steps. The bedforms are, in fact, formed or modified by frequent slope failures and related sedimentary flows, whose occurrence is favoured by the concurrent presence of several predisposing and triggering mechanisms, such as a high sedimentation rate due to a steep coastal creek, severe storms and seismic events.

Seafloor mapping and morphometric analysis of landslide scars can provide useful insights for marine geo-hazard assessment, as demonstrated by several studies performed on different geological settings. The availability of high-resolution Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) obtained through swath bathymetry allows us to apply this approach to the submarine portions of Stromboli volcano, affected for about 90% of their extension by mass-wasting features. Two main kinds of tsunamigenic landslides have been recognized and analyzed. Large-scale sector collapses are catastrophic events that mobilize up to few km 3 of material, generating huge tsunami waves that may affect Stromboli and propagate in surrounding areas. The related hazard is not very high as these collapses show recurrence periods of some (or more) thousand years. Conversely, medium-scale landslides are more hazardous as they occur at higher frequency with respect to the previous events, i.e. from some hundreds up to a few tens of years. These events are able to generate local but severe tsunamis when occurring in shallow-water, as demonstrated by the recent 2002 tsunamigenic landslides that struck the Stromboli coasts with waves up to 10 m high. Medium-scale landslides mobilize volumes up to some millions of cubic meters and may also evolve landwards through retrogressive processes, thus affecting coastal sectors. This study highlights that the main predisposing factors controlling medium-scale slope failures at Stromboli are high slope gradient and sedimentation rates; eruptive activity also plays a key role, as recently witnessed by the 2002 landslide.

In order to monitor the Stromboli submarine slope after the 30 December 2002 landslide and tsunami, repeated marine surveys were carried out offshore of Sciara del Fuoco. The morphological changes and depositional processes that brought to the gradual filling of the slide scar have been studied in detail. Thirteen surveys in a period of little more than 4 years provided a unique opportunity to reconstruct the morpho-sedimentary evolution of the submarine slope and its recovery after the mass-wasting event. The scar has been progressively filled with lava and volcanoclastic debris; in the first month and a half, the filling rate was very high due to the entrance of lava flows into the sea and to the morphological readjustment of the slope; in the following months/years the rate dramatically decreased when the eruptive vents moved upwards and the eruption finally stopped. After 4 years (February 2007) more than 40% of the scar was already filled. In early 2007, a new eruption occurred and a lava delta was constructed in the 2002 scar, influencing the natural readjustment of the slope; therefore, our reconstruction only encompasses the period between the 2002 and 2007 eruptions. The swath bathymetry reconstruction of geometry and volume of scar filling during the period 2002–2007 evidenced a punctuated and fast shift of depocenters and debris emplacement through avalanching processes. This process quickly obliterated the features produced by the 2002 tsunamigenic landslide so that a major question about the preservation potential of mass-wasting features on active volcanic flanks emerges.

Newly collected multibeam and seismic data on the intra-slope Palmarola ridge show widespread pockmarks and landslide-related morphologies along its flanks. In detail, two main types of slope failures were identified: disintegrative-like and cohesive like landslides. The first type is characterized by a complex of small, nested scars affecting the steep and tectonically-controlled eastern flank of the ridge, suggesting a genesis related to retrogressive processes. The cohesive landslides affect the northern flank of the ridge and are characterized by larger scars, where material was not completely evacuated, and well-defined debris deposits at their base, with the development of pressure ridges. Tectonic activity and slope gradients represent the main controlling factors for the development of instabilities; moreover, we noted a relationship between pockmarks and landslide scars.

Very high resolution bathymetric map obtained through multibeam echo-sounders data are crucial to generate accurate Digital Terrain Models from which the morphological setting of active volcanic areas can be analyzed in detail. Here we show and discuss the main results from the first multibeam bathymetric survey performed in shallow-waters around the island of Lipari, the largest and the most densely populated of the Aeolian Islands (southern Italy). Data have been collected in the depth range of 0.1-150 m and complete the already existent high-resolution multibeam bathymetry realized between 100 and 1300 m water depth. The new ultra-high resolution bathymetric maps at 0.1-0.5 m provide new insights on the shallow seafloor of Lipari, allowing to detail a large spectrum of volcanic, erosive-depositional and anthropic features. Moreover, the presented data allow outlining the recent morphological evolution of the shallow coastal sector of this active volcanic island, indicating the presence of potential geo-hazard factors in shallow waters.

High-resolution bathymetry collected around the Aeolian islands allowed the recognition of a large spectrum of geomorphic features referable to mass-movements. Besides large-scale sector collapse scars (recognized only at Stromboli), two main groups of medium-scale submarine slides are distinguished based on their size, geometry and location. The first group is defined by semi-circular slide scars at hundred-meter scale, indenting the outer edges of insular shelves and overlying sedimentary deposits in the first hundred(s) m of water depth (wd). The second group is defined by downslope-elongated scars carving the steep submarine flanks of volcanic edifices and interpreted as retrogressive slope failures. Within this latter group, particular attention has been devoted to the frequent slope failures affecting the submarine portion of the Sciara del Fuoco at Stromboli, and to the nested slide scars affecting the old and extinct Banco del Bagno submarine volcanic center at Lipari. The main predisposing and triggering factors, recurrence times and tsunamigenic potential of the recognized mass-movements are briefly discussed to provide some insights into geohazard assessment of the area.

The 28 December, 1908 Reggio Calabria and Messina earthquake (named after the two most damaged cities on the coasts of Messina Strait) was one of the strongest (MW 7.1) ever to occur in Italy, and was also followed by a tsunami that severely impacted the coasts of the Strait. Although there is general agreement that its epicentre is located offshore in the Messina Strait, the source fault has never been detected; a century-long question is therefore pending on the source of both the 1908 earthquake and tsunami. Within the ongoing debate on this subject, little attention has been given, so far, to morphological insights from high resolution bathymetric (multibeam) data, particularly as regarding the evidence of faults affecting the seafloor and the question of whether a submarine landslide may had been the cause of the tsunami. We aim to address this issue by presenting the results of a morpho-bathymetric study in the Messina Strait and surroundings, investigated by means of high-resolution swath bathymetry. The primary morpho-structural feature in this area is the axial channel of the Messina Canyon, towards which flow several tributary canyons that incise the steep continental slope on the Calabrian and Sicilian margins. These canyons carve deeply into a very narrow (almost lacking) continental shelf and merge laterally forming a continuous erosional margin rimming the Messina Strait. This giant, composite canyon environment is the locus of intense erosional and depositional processes that superimpose on active tectonic deformation, resulting in a complex geomorphology that hinders the distinction between tectonic and sedimentary features. Seafloor ruptures that may be linked to fault systems compatible with the source of the 1908 earthquake and tsunami could not be identified based from our morpho-bathymetric analysis; however, we provide evidence of several geomorphic features indicative of tectonic deformation in the Messina Strait, define the presence and distribution of submarine landslides, and evaluate their possible role as tsunami sources.

Five consecutive multibeam bathymetries collected before, during, and after the 2007 Stromboli eruption, combined with visual inspections, allowed us to document the morphological evolution of an ‘a’ā lava-fed delta and to reconstruct the main processes acting during its submarine emplacement. The 2007 Stromboli delta extended down to 600-m water depth and covered an area of 420 × 103 m2, with a maximum thickness of 65 m and a total estimated volume of ≈7 × 106 m3, i.e., three times larger than its subaerial counterpart. The lava delta grew mainly through the emplacement of discrete lobes about 50–150 m in size. Lobes were fed from point sources along the paleoshoreline, and their subaqueous pathways seem to be mainly controlled by the submarine morphology, with flows mostly filling in depressions left by previous lobes. The main controlling factors on the lobe morphology and thickness are the effusion rates and the pre-eruption morphology, i.e., the geometry and gradients of the basal surface. Data also shows that sudden slope failure of portions of the submarine delta may occur simultaneously with accretion, implying that a significant part of the delta material can be transported to greater depths by submarine gravity flows. The present study is relevant for future monitoring and hazard assessment during the growth of active lava-fed deltas as well as for a better interpretation of ancient volcaniclastic successions inland.

High-resolution multibeam data in the central and eastern part of the Aeolian volcanic arc (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea) reveal widespread large-scale waveforms on the submarine flanks of these insular volcanoes. These features show high variability in wave parameters (wavelength of 60-1600. m and wave height of 4-200. m) and morphology (from sinuous to arcuate in plan-view, and from undulating to stepped, with very steep scarps, in cross-section), indicating that different processes, at variable spatial and temporal scale, are responsible for their genesis. By relating the morphological characters of the different waveforms and the local boundary conditions (morphological setting, regional slope gradients, sediment source and dynamics) where these features form, we were able to distinguish bedforms formed by sedimentary gravity flows from bedform-like features due to gravity instability processes. In detail, bedforms have been interpreted as coarse-grained sediment waves according to their wave parameters, geometry and texture. High-resolution multibeam bathymetry acquired around Ventotene and S. Stefano islands (eastern Pontine Archipelago, Italy) enabled us to map main mass wasting features affecting their submarine portions. Large-scale instability morphological features are absent (apart from a 4 × 2.5 km caldera in the western sector), whereas 126 landslide scars of 100-m of length scale were identified between 130 and 1,150 m of water depth (wd). Two main groups of scars can be distinguished: the first one affects the edge of the insular shelf between 130 and 260 m wd. The second group affects the lower slope and surrounding basins, representing cases of retrogressive failure at the heads of channelized features. The different morphological relief of the scars coupled with the recognition of crescent-shaped bedforms made it possible to distinguish two mass-wasting/erosive stages and consequently to map the more active sectors of the edifice. The future evolution of the mass wasting processes will produce the enlargement of erosive sectors with possible formation of large channels, which will carve wide sectors of the edifice, as suggested by available geological constraints and by comparison with the nearby and older western sector of the Pontine archipelago, where a more mature organization of mass wasting processes is observed. The present study can provide useful insights for hazard assessment and future planning of risk mitigation in such islands that are densely populated and touristically exploited during the summer months.

A new definition of the morpho-structural submarine setting of the Vulcano volcano is presented based on the integration of multibeam swath bathymetry, high-resolution seismic profiles and sea-floor sampling. A number of unknown volcanic features have been mapped on the submarine flanks of Vulcano Island as volcanic outcrops and isolated cones. For most of them a relatively old age is suggested (especially to the west of the island), while evidence of relatively recent volcanic activity characterizes the north-eastern submarine sector, offshore Vulcanello. The morphology and distribution of these features, either aligned along NNW-SSE trends or radially elongated, suggest the prevalence of regional structural control or local stresses related to the volcano structure, respectively, in the different sectors of the volcanic edifice. Shallow-water (< 120 mbsl) insular shelves, related to wave action during Late Quaternary sea-level fluctuations, were recognized in correspondence of the oldest sectors of the edifice, while they are lacking in the younger sectors. Beyond the shelf edge, a strong increase of slope gradients characterizes the submarine flanks, promoting the formation of erosive-depositional and mass-wasting features at different scale, such as landslide scars, gullies, headless channelized features, crescent-shaped bedforms and volcaniclastic fans. In particular, two large volcaniclastic fans were identified on the north-eastern and south-western flanks, where marine retrogressive processes are very active and sediment is funnelled from the coasts to the foot of the volcano. These fans are created by the gradual stacking of gravity flows fed by repeated small- and medium-scale mass-wasting events, instead of being related to large-scale flank instability events. The lack of large-scale lateral collapse on the submarine flanks of Vulcano volcano has been related to the morpho-structural and volcano-tectonic setting of the volcanic edifice, characterized by the occurrence of summit caldera collapses limiting its total height and by the absence of well-defined rift zones.

High-resolution multibeam bathymetry is used as basis for detecting instability processes on the Tyrrhenian margin offshore Calabria (Italy). Among the many evidence at different spatial scale, we focus on selected cases that may represent a potential geohazard because of their scale, shallow/proximal location and state of activity. These include failures along coastal cliffs and canyon headwalls indenting narrow shelves. Coastal rocky failures impacting shallow water offshore Scilla and Palmi retain significant tsunamigenic potential, as proved by the 1783 Scilla event. Slide scars at canyon headwalls offshore Bagnara Calabra and Gioia Tauro indicate retrogressive failure active at water depth
