4. Simple linear response model for predicting energy band alignment of two-dimensional vertical heterostructure

Abstract

The Anderson and midgap models are often used in the study of semiconductor heterojunctions, but for van der Waals (vdW) vertical heterostructures they have shown only very limited success. Using the group-IV monochalcogenide vertical heterostructures as a prototypical system, we propose a linear response model and compare the effectiveness of these models in predicting density functional theory (DFT) band alignments, band types and bandgaps. We show that the DFT band alignment is best predicted by the linear response model, which falls in between the Anderson and midgap models. Our proposed model can be characterized by an interface dipole $\alpha\times(E_{m2}-E_{m1})$, where the linear response coefficient $\alpha$ = 0 and 1 corresponds to the Anderson and midgap model respectively, and $E_{m}$ is the midgap energy of the monolayer, which can be viewed as an effective electronegativity. For group-IV monochalcogenides, we show that $\alpha$ = 0.34 best captures the DFT band alignment of the vdW heterostructure, and we discuss the viability of the linear response model considering other effects such as strains and band hybridization, and conclude with an application of the model to predict experimental band alignments.

Abstract

The notions of the fuzzy β-minimal and maximal descriptions were established by Yang et al. (Yang and Hu, 2016 and 2019). Recently, Zhang et al. (Zhang et al. 2019) presented the fuzzy covering via ℐ,T-fuzzy rough set model (FCℐTFRS), and Jiang et al. (Jiang et al., in 2019) introduced the covering through variable precision ℐ,T-fuzzy rough sets (CVPℐTFRS). To generalize these models in (Jiang et al., 2019 and Zhang et al. 2019), that is, to improve the lower approximation and reduce the upper approximation, the present paper constructs eight novel models of an FCℐTFRS based on fuzzy β-minimal (maximal) descriptions. Characterizations of these models are discussed. Further, eight types of CVPℐTFRS are introduced, and we investigate the related properties. Relationships among these models are also proposed. Finally, we illustrate the above study with a numerical example that also describes its practical application.

Abstract

Highlights • Educational institutes worldwide are facing closure owing to SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. • Online mode of learning is adopted by institutes worldwide. • We compared access & use of online learning among Bruneians and Pakistanis. • Bruneian are more satisfied with online learning as compared to Pakistanis., Background Educational institutes around the globe in this 21st century is facing challenges of SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus infectious disease. They are required to conduct online learning to avoid face to face contact in emergency scenarios such as COVID-19 pandemic and continuing academic year while keeping social distancing. Students need to adapt to new roles of learning through information technology to succeed in academics amid COVID-19. Objective However, access to the impact of access & use of online learning resources, to what extent, these students are satisfied with online learning amid COVID-19 particularly in handling new challenges are critical to explore. Therefore, in this paper, we aimed to assess and compare the access & use of online learning of Bruneians and Pakistanis amid enforced lockdown imposed by the governments using a five-items satisfaction scale underlying existing literature. Method For this, a cross-sectional study was done in the first half of June 2020 after the pandemic situation among 320 students’ across Pakistan and Brunei and strata with a pre-defined questionnaire. Data were analyzed with statistical software package SPSS 2.0. Results The finding showed that there is a relationship between students’ satisfaction and access & use of online learning. Outcomes of the survey suggest that Bruneian are more satisfied (50%) with the use of online learning amid lockdown as compared to Pakistanis (35.9%). Living in the Urban area as compared to a rural area is also a major factor contributing to satisfaction with the access and use of online learning for both Bruneian and Pakistanis. Moreover, previous experience with the use of online learning is observed prevalent among Bruneians (P=.000), while among friends and family is using online learning (P=.000) were encouraging factors contributed to satisfaction with the use of online learning among Pakistanis amid COVID-19. Correlation results suggest that access and use factors of online learning amid COVID-19 were positively associated with satisfaction among both populations amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Abstract

In our current era, a new rapidly spreading pandemic disease called coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by a virus identified as a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), is becoming a crucial threat for the whole world. Currently, the number of patients infected by the virus is expanding exponentially, but there is no commercially available COVID-19 medication for this pandemic. However, numerous antiviral drugs are utilized for the treatment of the COVID-19 disease. Identification of the appropriate antivirus medicine to treat the infection of COVID-19 is still a complicated and uncertain decision. This study's key objective is to develop a novel approach called q-rung orthopair probabilistic hesitant fuzzy rough set (q-ROPHFRS), which incorporates the q-rung orthopair fuzzy set, probabilistic hesitant fuzzy set, and rough set structures. New q-ROPHFR aggregation operators have been established: the q-ROPHFR Einstein weighted averaging (q-ROPHFREWA) operator and the q-ROPHFR Einstein weighted geometric (q-ROPHFREWG) operator. In this study, we explored some basic features of the developed operators. Afterward, to demonstrate the viability and feasibility of the established decision-making approach in real-world applications, a case study related to selecting drugs for COVID-19 pandemic is addressed. Furthermore, a comprehensive comparison with the q-rung orthopair probabilistic hesitant fuzzy rough TOPSIS technique is also presented to illustrate the benefits of the new framework. Abstract

Objective  The aim of this study is to present our experience in dealing with middle ear adenomas (MEAs), very rare tumors of the middle ear. Methods  The medical notes of individuals with MEAs treated in tertiary referral; academic settings were retrospectively reviewed. We recorded the presenting symptoms, imaging findings, and pathology results. We additionally examined our surgical outcomes, follow-up period, recurrence, and morbidity. Results  We identified four patients with MEAs: two males and two females with an average age of 36.25 years (range = 27–51 years). Despite the detailed imaging studies, including computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging with intravenous contrast administration, a biopsy was essential in setting the diagnosis. Total surgical resection was achieved in all patients without any recurrence over an average of 6 years (range = 3–10 years). Complete ipsilateral deafness was the commonest surgical morbidity due to footplate infiltration by the tumor. Conclusion  Total surgical resection is the treatment of choice in MEAs to minimize the risk for recurrence; this can come with morbidity, mostly sensorineural deafness.
