The inventory of the taxa collected in 2022 during the annual field trip of the Working Group for Floristics, Systematics and Evolution of the Italian Botanical Society is reported. The field trip was held from 19th to 22th April in the islands of Lipari and Panarea (Aeolian Islands, Sicilia). Overall, 1,664 herbarium specimens were deposited in public and private herbaria. The flora documented for the studied area amounts to 386 specific and subspecific taxa, belonging to 241 genera and 74 families. Centaurea aeolica, Helichrysum litoreum (Asteraceae), and Dianthus rupicola subsp. aeolicus (Caryophyllaceae) were the only three Italian endemics found in the study area, whereas 48 alien taxa were recorded. Dimorphotheca ecklonis (Asteraceae), Nassella tenuissima (Poaceae), Solanum torvum (Solanaceae), and Viola wittrockiana (Violaceae) are casual alien species new to Sicilia, whereas Oenothera odorata (Onagraceae) is a new naturalized alien species for the Italian vascular flora. The Aeolian Islands (Italy) are a volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea comprising seven main islands, among which are two active volcanoes. The peculiar geological features and the wide variety of environments and soils have an important impact on native plants, and in particular, the Aeolian populations of Dactylis glomerata (a perennial cool-season bunchgrass) exhibit remarkable phenotypic variability. Considering that environmental drivers also strongly affect the production of plant metabolites, this work aimed at comparing the metabolomic profiles of D. glomerata (leaves) harvested at different altitudes on four islands of the Aeolian archipelago, namely: Lipari, Vulcano, Stromboli and Panarea. Samples were analyzed by 1H NMR profiling, and data were treated by PCA. Samples collected on Stromboli were very different from each other and from the samples collected in the other islands. Through an Orthogonal Partial Least Squares (OPLS) model, using altitude as the y variable, it emerged that the concentration of proline, glycine betaine, sucrose, glucose and chlorogenic acid of D. glomerata growing on Stromboli decreased at increasing altitude. This research project concerns the study, analysis and dating of obsidian flows on the island of Lipari, in relation to the population of the Aeolian Islands, during the Neolithic period.

We present the first two-dimensional (2-D) spatial distribution of seismic scattering and intrinsic attenuation beneath the Aeolian Islands arc. The Aeolian Islands archipelago represents one of the best examples of a small dimension volcanic island arc characterised by the alternation of different structural domains. Using the seismic wave diffusion model as the basis for the analysis, and using data from an active seismic experiment (TOMO-ETNA), we analysed more than 76,700 seismic paths marked by epicentre-seismic station pairs. Based on frequencies of 4–24 Hz, we identified high regional attenuation, comparable with other volcanic areas of the world. We used two different seismogram lengths, reflecting two different sampling depths, which allowed us to observe two different attenuative behaviours. As in most volcanic regions, scattering attenuation predominates over intrinsic attenuation, but some characteristics are area-specific. Volcanic structures present the highest contribution to scattering, especially in the low frequency range. This behaviour is interpreted to reflect the small size of the islands and the potentially relatively small size of individual magmatic feeding systems. In addition, strong scattering observed in one zone is associated with the northernmost part of the so-called Aeolian-Tindari-Letojanni fault system. In contrast, away from the volcanic islands, intrinsic attenuation dominates over scattering attenuation. We interpret this shift in attenuative behaviour as reflecting the large volume of sedimentary material deposited on the seabed. Owing to their poorly consolidated nature, sediments facilitate intrinsic attenuation via energy dissipation, but in general present high structural homogeneity that is reflected by low levels of scattering. Our results show that this region is not underlain by a large volcanic structural complex such as that beneath nearby Mt. Etna volcano. Instead, we observe dimensionally smaller and isolated subsurface volcanic structures. The identification of such features facilitates improved geological interpretation; we can now separate consolidated marine structures from independent subsurface volcanic elements. The results of this study provide a model for new research in similar regions around the world.

The football ascidian Diazona violacea was observed in three different sites in the Aeolian Archipelago (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea), from 53 to 116 m depth. A large population of this ascidian was found on rocky habitat, enhancing its three-dimensionality and constituting a peculiar facies. Colonies of D. violacea showed a mean density of 0.87 ± 0.09 colonies m−2 and a maximum of 4 colonies m−2. The number of zooids was used as a proxy of colony size and age (assuming that the higher the number of zooids, the larger and older is the colony), and the population showed a leptokurtic distribution with the dominant presence of colonies with fewer than 100 zooids. Large aggregations of this species proved to play an important role in terms of seabed complexity, influencing the underwater landscape and worth of being recognized as a relevant type of biogenic habitat (although ephemeral) that can characterize mesophotic rocks in the Mediterranean Sea.

We present the preliminary results of the ongoing investigation of the obsidian from the Bronze Age village of San Vincenzo, Stromboli, Aeolian Islands, for the purpose of providing technological and typological characterization, and also provenance of the raw material, the latter with non-destructive p-XRF. Regarding provenance, the source of the raw material is likely to be neighbouring Lipari. It was transported to Stromboli and used mostly in a highly opportunistic manner and for the production of blade(let), non-bladelike tools (mainly scrapers) and micro bladelets. The obsidian distribution around the site shows concentration in both domestic and production areas.

Archaeological excavations in the S-F area of Piani della Corona settlement have affected a portion of 2200 m2 of a large plateau (490 m asl). The researches, conducted between 2007 and 2008 by the Superintendence of the Museo Preistorico Etnografico “L. Pigorini” with the Archaeological Superintendence of Calabria, have revealed traces of a large village from the EBA. Before settling in the EBA, human groups belonging Recent Neolithic frequented the plateau. Two burials located near the Bronze Age ditch belong to this period, and there are also sporadic ceramic fragments recovered from the huts. The importance of Piani della Corona is mainly due to its strategic location, serving as a bridge between Calabria, Sicily and the Aeolian Islands, as proven by the archaeological record. A very important role was provided by the obsidian industry, dated after the most distinctive archaeological ceramics class, to the EBA. Out of the 238 obsidian tools found in the S-F area (blades, cores and amorphous splinters), 88 artifacts were analyzed by pXRF. Their chemical determination made it possible to clarify the procurement dynamics and exchange routes with the Aeolian Islands for the EBA, integrating new data in an on-going research.

Objective: We conducted a study to describe food profile, health status and stroke risk factors in the population of the Aeolian Islands.Design: Self-administrated questionnaires regarding eating habits, health status and stroke risk factors were obtained from a sample of the general Aeolian population. We analysed the difference from common healthy eating habits indicated by the Italian Institute of Nutrition.Setting: Current evidence finds the Mediterranean diet is a protective factor for cardio- and cerebrovascular diseases. The Aeolian Islands are an interesting study setting because of their peculiarity in the epidemiology of cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.Participants: Individuals (n 586; age range 15-93 years; mean 52 (sd 18) years) living in the Aeolian Islands.Results: We found low fish consumption in 13·3% and vitamin intake deficiency in 5·8% of participants. A marked excess of saturated fats was observed in 71·0% of participants. Sodium excess was reported almost in half of participants (49·0%). Eating habits were characterized by high consumption of fruits and vegetables, consistent use of olive oil and scanty use of cured meat. Health status as evaluated by the General Health Questionnaire was characterized by 'normal distress' level in the majority of participants.Conclusions: Study findings show the eating habits and health status of the Aeolian people in an interesting setting of low incidence of cerebrovascular disease. This nutrition regimen has been proved to be protective against cerebrovascular disease. Nutrition is likely to contribute to the low incidence of stroke in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Before partially lived in, then place of permanent and productive life, today archipelago’s landscape plan challenges the strong tourist pressure and business to protect his cultural scientific heritage, subject of specific international research.

Return to the Aeolian Islands (Fughe e approdi, 2010) chronicles director Giovanna Taviani’s journey to the Aeolian Islands, a volcanic archipelago off the coast of Sicily and setting for a host of films. Return documents the islands’ geological past in a study of ecological, and not just cinematic history. This essay begins to unravel the threads of a magmatic Aeolian landscape where volcanoes, cinema, and memory collaborate in the creation of more-than-human stories.

Since the early 1970s, geodetic networks became a most important tool to monitor the present day deformations of the volcanic arc of the Aeolian Islands. The first benchmarks were installed in this region at Lipari and Vulcano Islands and the number of GPS benchmarks increased in time since the early ’90s. These networks were periodically surveyed in the frame of national and international geodynamic projects and for Civil Protection programs devoted to the mitigation of the volcanic hazard. The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) played a fundamental role in the realization and periodical reoccupation of these networks, with the goal to investigate the tectonic and volcanic processes, still active in this crucial area of the central Mediterranean. An updated GPS velocity map for this region, both for the horizontal and vertical component of land motion, with details for Lipari, Vulcano and Panarea Islands, is provided in this paper. The presented GPS velocity field also includes a set of additional discrete stations located in northern Sicily and Calabria together with data from the available CGPS networks active in southern Italy. Here we show the results from eighteen years of repeated GPS surveys performed in this region in the time span 1995-2013 and the open access AINET-GPS data archive, now freely available for the scientific community. Data will support scientific research and hopefully improve the assessment of volcanic and seismic hazard in this region.

Very high resolution bathymetric map obtained through multibeam echo-sounders data are crucial to generate accurate Digital Terrain Models from which the morphological setting of active volcanic areas can be analyzed in detail. Here we show and discuss the main results from the first multibeam bathymetric survey performed in shallow-waters around the island of Lipari, the largest and the most densely populated of the Aeolian Islands (southern Italy). Data have been collected in the depth range of 0.1-150 m and complete the already existent high-resolution multibeam bathymetry realized between 100 and 1300 m water depth. The new ultra-high resolution bathymetric maps at 0.1-0.5 m provide new insights on the shallow seafloor of Lipari, allowing to detail a large spectrum of volcanic, erosive-depositional and anthropic features. Moreover, the presented data allow outlining the recent morphological evolution of the shallow coastal sector of this active volcanic island, indicating the presence of potential geo-hazard factors in shallow waters.

Plants face many different stress factors in their natural environment and life span. Among numerous abiotic stresses are sulfur containing volcanic gases which are highly hazardous and can enter plants via the stomata. As final consequence, toxic sulfite is formed inside the leaves which has to be detoxified. Controlled laboratory experiments have been performed in the past to identify the detoxification mechanisms of sulfur containing gases using model organisms. However, actual studies which investigate detoxification mechanism of H 2 S/SO 2 in natural environments and include non-model organisms are missing. For this purpose plant material of eight species was sampled on the Aeolian Islands Vulcano and Lipari, at locations with harmful volcanic gases and at control sites. The collected material was analyzed to study the detoxification pathway of sulfur surplus due to exposure to H 2 S/SO 2 . Different reaction strategies of plants can be hypothesized: tight control of gas uptake by regulating stomata, increased synthesis of metabolites by sulfur assimilation via reduction of sulfite and back-oxidation of sulfite to sulfate via the plant molybdoenzyme sulfite oxidase followed by storage in the vacuole. The sampled plants reacted differently towards the exposure of H 2 S/SO 2 with respect to closure of the stomata and overall accumulation of thiols, sulfate and/or total sulfur. Correlation analysis deciphered three different strategies of detoxification within the investigated plants: (i) Channelling of the sulfur surplus by formation of S-metabolites like thiols (reductive detoxification) and the use of mainly (ii) oxidative detoxification into sulfate with increased sulfite oxidase activity or (iii) oxidative detoxification without increased sulfite oxidase activity. One plant species did not react to sulfur surplus at all. Grouping of all tested species is consistent with their phylogenetic classification which must be strengthened in future studies. The problem of large location uncertainties for seismicity occurring in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea have been partially exceeded during the implementation of the long-term scientific mission of the TYrrhenian Deep sea Experiment (TYDE), which allowed the installation of 14 wide-band Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS) and Hydrophones (OBH) in the period December 2000 May 2001 on the sea-bottom floor around the Aeolian and Ustica Islands. Local events recorded at landstations have been observed also on the seismograms of the Ocean Bottom Seismic Network (OBSN). Moreover, some hundreds of low magnitude events, undetected from the land networks, have been recorded. We combined the readings of body wave arrival times from OBS-OBH with those from landstations to localise seismic events. We focused our study on three clusters of events representative of the seismic activity of the area: (i) deep events, (ii) Ustica (iii) NE-Sicily. The analysis of the integrated data set of the seismicity off-shore and on-shore, obtained from the combined land-OBS seismic network (Ustica sequence and Deep events), has improved locations in terms of RMS residuals, azimuthal gap, epicentral and hypocentral errors. Moreover, further classes of events have been analysed: the first one includes some local events that could be located only by integrating single trigger readings from the few available land-stations with the OBSN-data; the second one comprises local events that have been detected only by the OBS-OBH stations. In particular, the last cluster underlines the importance of an OBSN in the Tyrrhenian deep basin to reveal its unknown intense micro-seismicity, permitting to better understand both the tectonic and geodynamic picture of the area.

On 3rd November 2002, at about 3 km off-shore of Panarea Island (Aeolian Islands, Southern Italy), a series of gas vents suddenly and violently opened from the seafloor at the depth of 10-15 m, with an unusually high gas flux and superimposing on the already existing submarine fumarolic field. Starting from the 12th November 2002 a discontinuous geochemical monitoring program was carried out. The emissions consisted in an emulsion whose liquid phase derived from condensation of an uprising vapor phase occurring close to the fluid outlets without significant contamination by seawater. The whole composition of the fluids was basically H2O- and CO2-dominated, with minor amounts of typical «hydrothermal» components (such as H2S, H2, CO and light hydrocarbons), atmospheric-related compounds, and characterized by the occurrence of a significant magmatic gas fraction (mostly represented by SO2, HCl and HF). According to the observed temporal variability of the fluid compositions, between November and December 2002 the hydrothermal feeding system was controlled by oxidizing conditions due to the input of magmatic gases. The magmatic degassing phenomena showed a transient nature, as testified by the almost complete disappearance of the magmatic markers in a couple of months and by the restoration, since January 2003, of the chemical features of the existing hydrothermal system. The most striking feature of the evolution of the «Panarea degassing event» was the relatively rapid restoration of the typical reducing conditions of a stationary hydrothermal system, in which the FeO/Fe1.5O redox pair of the rock mineral phases has turned to be the dominating redox controlling system.

Lucabindiite, ideally (K,NH4)As4O6(Cl,Br), is a new mineral found as a medium-temperature fumarole encrustation (T = 170 °C) at "La Fossa" crater of Vulcano, Aeolian Islands, Italy. The mineral deposited as aggregates of micrometer-sized hexagonal and platy crystals on the surface of the pyroclastic breccia in association with arsenolite, sal ammoniac, sulfur, and amorphous arsenic-rich sulfurite. The new mineral is colorless to white, transparent, non-fluorescent, has a vitreous luster and a white streak. The calculated density is 3.68 g/cm³. Lucabindiite is hexagonal, space group P6/mmm, with a = 5.2386(7) Å, c = 9.014(2) Å, V = 214.23(7) Å3, and Z = 1. The eight strongest reflections in the X-ray powder-diffraction data [d in Å (I) (hkl)] are: 3.20 (100) (102), 2.62 (67) (110), 4.51 (52) (002), 4.54 (30) (100), 1.97 (28) (113), 1.49 (21) (115), 1.60 (21) (212), 2.26 (19) (112). Lucabindiite's average chemical composition is (wt%): K2O 5.14, As2O3 84.71, Cl 3.63, Br 6.92, F 0.77, (NH4)2O 2.73, O=F,Cl,Br -1.84, total 102.06. The empirical chemical formula, calculated on the basis of 7 anions pfu, is [K0.51(NH4)0.49]Σ1.00 As4.00O5.93(Cl0.48Br0.40F0.19)Σ1.07. According to chemical analyses and X-ray data, lucabindiite is the natural analog of synthetic phases with general formula MAs4O6X where M = K, NH4 and X = Cl, Br, I. The crystal structure is characterized by neutral As2O3 sheets arranged parallel to (001). The As atoms of two neighboring sheets point at each other and the sheets are separated by interlayer M (=K, NH4) and X (=Cl, Br, F) atoms. The name is in honor of Luca Bindi (b. 1971), Professor of Mineralogy and former Head of the Division of Mineralogy of the Natural History Museum of the University of Florence. Aim To investigate the importance of various island characteristics in determining spatial patterns of variations in beta diversity for various animal groups. Location Analyses are presented for 10 animal groups living on the Aeolian Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the central Mediterranean, near Sicily. Methods Three hypotheses were formulated to explain patterns of beta diversity: the target-area–distance effect, stepping stone dispersal and island age. Matrices of inter-island dissimilarities were constructed under each hypothesis and correlated with matrices of faunal dissimilarities using Mantel tests. For the ‘target-area–distance effect’ hypothesis, inter-island dissimilarities were calculated using island sizes and distances to nearest mainland areas. For the ‘stepping stone dispersal’ hypothesis, inter-island distances were measured. Finally, for the ‘island age’ hypothesis, inter-island dissimilarities were calculated on the basis of the geological age of the islands. Cluster analysis was used to investigate inter-island faunal relationships. Results Support for a target-area–distance effect was found only for birds. For these highly mobile animals, inter-island distances had no significant effects on beta diversity. Birds are known to colonize islands by crossing large sea barriers and thus they can easily reach the Aeolian Islands, which are close to source areas (notably Sicily). Inter-island distances had a significant role in determining patterns of beta diversity in most invertebrates. For Mollusca, Opiliones, Chilopoda, Heteroptera, coprophagous Scarabaeoidea, and Tenebrionidae, even relatively short distances preclude invertebrates from colonizing an island regularly from the mainland, and most colonization probably results from inter-island faunal exchanges. Island age was proved to be important only for orthopterans. Main conclusions The origin of most of the Aeolian invertebrate fauna is quite recent, and species appear to have established on the islands predominantly by stepping stone dispersal. Birds, which are highly mobile organisms, follow more direct mainland–island dynamics. As further studies on other islands become available, comparative analyses will confirm whether the factors influencing variations in beta diversity in this study and their relationships with species dispersal ability are consistent across scales and geographical context. Aim To investigate the biological meaning of equations used to apply the general dynamic model (GDM) of oceanic island biogeography proposed by R. J. Whittaker, K. A. Triantis and R. J. Ladle. Location Analyses are presented for 17 animal groups living on the Aeolian Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the central Mediterranean, near Sicily. Methods In addition to the mathematical implementation of the GDM proposed by Whittaker, Triantis and Ladle, and termed here logATT2 ( , where S is species number or any other diversity metric, t is island age, A is island area, and a, b, c and d are fitted parameters), a new implementation based on the Arrhenius equation of the species–area relationship (SAR) is investigated. The new model (termed powerATT2) is: . For logATT2 and powerATT2 models, equations were developed to calculate (1) the expected number of species at equilibrium (i.e. when the island has reached maturity) per unit area ( Seq), and (2) the time required to obtain this value ( teq). Whereas the intercept in the Gleason model ( S = C + z log A) or the coefficient of the Arrhenius power model ( S = CA z) of the SAR can be considered measures of the expected number of species per unit area, this is not the case for the parameter a of the ATT2 models. However, values of Seq can be used for this purpose. The index of ‘colonization ability’ (CAB), calculated as the ratio , may provide a measure of the mean number of species added per unit area per unit time. Results Both ATT2 models fitted most of the data well, but the powerATT2 model was in most cases superior. Equilibrial values of species richness ( Seq) varied from c. 3 species km−2 (reptiles) to 100 species km−2 (mites). The fitted curves for the powerATT2 model showed large variations in d, from 0.03 to 3. However, most groups had values of d around 0.2–0.4, as commonly observed for the z-values of SARs modelled by a power function. Equilibration times ranged from about 170,000 years to 400,000 years. Mites and springtails had very high values of CAB, thus adding many more species per unit area per unit time than others. Reptiles and phytophagous scarabs showed very low values, being the groups that added fewest species per unit area per unit time. Main conclusions Values of equilibrial species richness per unit area are influenced by species biology (e.g. body size and ecological specialization). Theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that higher immigration rates should increase the z-values of the Arrhenius model. Thus, in the same archipelago, groups with larger z-values should be characterized by higher dispersal ability. Results obtained here for the parameter d conform to this prediction. Quartz-rich xenoliths in lavas (basalts to andesites; 90-30 ka) from Alicudi contain abundant melt and fluid inclusions. Two generations of CO2-rich fluid inclusions are present in quartz-rich xenolith grains: early (Type I) inclusions related to partial melting of the host xenoliths, and late Type II inclusions related to the fluid trapping during xenolith ascent. Homogenisation temperatures of fluid inclusions correspond to two density intervals: 0.93-0.68 g/cm3 (Type I) and 0.47-0.26 g/cm3 (Type II). Early Type I fluid inclusions indicate trapping pressures around 6 kbar, which are representative for the levels of partial melting of crustal rocks and xenolith formation. Late Type II fluid inclusions show lower trapping pressures, between 1.7 kbar and 0.2 kbar, indicative for shallow magma rest and accumulation during ascent to the surface. Data suggest the presence of two magma reservoirs: the first is located at lower crustal depths (about 24 km), site of fractional crystallization, mixing with source derived magma, and various degrees of crustal assimilation. The second magma reservoir is located at shallow crustal depths (about 6 km), the site where magma rested for a short time before erupting.

Demicheleite, ideally BiSBr, is the first natural bismuth sulfohalogenide so far discovered. It is identical with the corresponding and analogous synthetic compound and is one of the very few minerals where bromine is an essential component. It was found in an active high-temperature fumarole at the rim of La Fossa crater, Vulcano Island, Aeolian archipelago, Sicily, Italy. The mineral occurs as prismatic translucent crystals up to 0.5 mm in size in an altered pyroclastic breccia, together with pseudocotunnite, bismoclite, bismuthinite, cotunnite, and challacolloite. The mineral is orthorhombic, space group Pnam, with a = 8.0424(9), b = 9.8511(11), and c = 4.0328(5) Å, V = 319.50(6) Å3, Z = 4 (from single crystal); the habit is prismatic with {110} and {210} as prevailing forms, terminated by minor faces of another prism {011}, a pinacoid {010}, and a bipyramid {111}.The color is dark red to black; the streak is red; the luster submetallic. Non-fluorescent. Tenacity: brittle. Cleavage and fracture: not observed. The calculated density is 6.312 g/cm³. The chemical analysis obtained by EDS microprobe gave (wt%) Bi 67.6(4), Br 17.4(7), Cl 4.1(4), I 0.6(1), S 10.1(1), total 99.8, corresponding to the empirical formula (based on 3 apfu): Bi0.99S0.97(Br0.67Cl0.35I0.02)Σ=1.04 The crystal structure has been refined to a final R index of 0.037 and contains Bi in sevenfold coordination at the center of a monocapped trigonal prism. By sharing the triangular bases, such polyhedra form rows extending along [001]. These rows are connected to symmetry-related rows by sharing S-S edges of the pyramidal caps; these double rows are connected to each other by sharing Br/Cl atoms. The bond lengths are close to those of the synthetic counterparts BiSBr and BiSCl, with Bi-S bonds 2.593(3) and 2.720(2) Å long and Bi-Br/Cl bonds 3.009(1) and 3.488(2) Å long. The strongest 6 lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [dobs(Å) (I) hkl] are: 4.220 (68) (120), 3.740 (62) (210), 2.909 (100) (121), 2.036 (47) (321), 1.865 (63) (022), and 1.774 (88) (411). The mineral is named after Vincenzo de Michele (b. 1936), former curator of the Section of Mineralogy of the Museo di Storia Naturale, Milano, Italy. Both the mineral and the mineral name have been approved by the IMA Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (IMA 2007-022). Simple Summary: Some corals belonging to the orders Alcyonacea and Antipatharia have elongated, unbranched shapes, and are generally addressed as sea whips. The octocorals Viminella flagellum are the main sea whip species inhabiting the Mediterranean Sea, where they can form large colony aggregations known as coral forests. These habitats are of great conservation importance; they provide a suite of ecosystem goods and services, and their monitoring is essential to plan appropriate conservation strategies. One of the most important indicators on the status of a coral forest is its population structure, such as the frequency of different size classes within the coral population. This is very difficult to assess in sea whips because of the length and high flexibility. Here, we report on the findings of a newly discovered, monospecific forest of V. flagellum in Aeolian Archipelago (Mediterranean Sea), and we present a new method to study its population structure using video analysis. The results of the survey indicate that the Aeolian coral population was in good condition, without significant anthropogenic impacts. The new method presented here proved to be an effective and promising tool for the monitoring of this vulnerable marine ecosystem. It can be applied to every known population of V. flagellum as well as adapted to other sea-whip species. Coral forests are vulnerable marine ecosystems formed by arborescent corals (e.g., Anthozoa of the orders Alcyonacea and Antipatharia). The population structure of the habitat-forming corals can inform on the status of the habitat, representing an essential aspect to monitor. Most Mediterranean corals live in the mesophotic and aphotic zones, and their population structures can be assessed by analyzing images collected by underwater vehicles. This is still not possible in whip-like corals, whose colony lengths and flexibilities impede the taking of direct length measurements from images. This study reports on the occurrence of a monospecific forest, of the whip coral Viminella flagellum in the Aeolian Archipelago (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea; 149 m depth), and the assessment of its population structure through an ad-hoc, non-invasive method to estimate a colony height based on its width. The forest of V. flagellum showed a mean density of 19.4 ± 0.2 colonies m−2 (up to 44.8 colonies m−2) and no signs of anthropogenic impacts. The population was dominated by young colonies, with the presence of large adults and active recruitment. The new model proved to be effective for non-invasive monitoring of this near threatened species, representing a needed step towards appropriate conservation actions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Results of thermophysical investigations into the lavas of the island of Lipari (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea) are presented. Samples selected for laboratory measurements belong to four main magmatic cycles, which produced basaltic-andesitic, andesitic and rhyolitic lavas. The wet-bulk density and the thermal conductivity measured on 69 specimens range from 1900 to 2760 kg m-3 and from 1.02 to 2.88 W m-1 K-1, respectively. Porosity is never negligible and its influence on density is maximum in rhyolites of the third cycle. The thermal conductivity is also influenced by the amount of glass. Rhyolitic obsidians show values lower than other rhyolites, although the latter rocks have a larger average porosity. The radioactive heat production determined on 36 specimens varies with the rock type, depending on the amount of U, Th and K. In basic lavas of the first cycle its value is 0.95°± 0.30 mW m-3, while in rhyolites of the fourth cycle it attains 6.68°±0.61 mW m-3. A comparison between results of g-ray spectrometry and X-ray fluorescence points out that the assumption of equilibrium in the decay series of the isotopic elements seems fulfilled. The information obtained is useful not only for the interpretation of geophysical surveys but also for the understanding of the geochemical characteristics of lavas.

Pyrometamorphism is the highest temperature end-member of the sanidinite facies (high-temperature, low-pressure contact metamorphism) and comprises both subsolidus and partial melting reactions which may locally lead to cryptocrystalline-glassy rocks (i.e., porcellanites and buchites). A wide range of pyrometamorphic ejecta, with different protoliths from Stromboli volcano, have been investigated over the last two decades. Among these, a heterogeneous (composite) glassy sample (B1) containing intimately mingled porcellanite and buchite lithotypes was selected to be studied through new FESEM–EDX and QEMSCAN™ mineral mapping investigations, coupled with the already available bulk rock composition data. This xenolith was chosen because of the unique and intriguing presence of abundant Cu–Fe sulphide globules within the buchite glass in contrast with the well-known general absence of sulphides in Stromboli basalts or their subvolcanic counterparts (dolerites) due to the oxygen fugacity of NNO + 0.5–NNO + 1 (or slightly lower) during magma crystallization. The investigated sample was ejected during the Stromboli paroxysm of 5 April 2003 when low porphyritic (LP) and high porphyritic (HP) basalts were erupted together. Both types of magmas are present as coatings of the porcellanite–buchite sample and were responsible for the last syn-eruptive xenoliths's rim made of a thin crystalline-glassy selvage. The complex petrogenetic history of the B1 pyrometamorphic xenolith is tentatively explained in the framework of the shallow subvolcanic processes and vent system dynamics occurred shortly before (January–March 2003) the 5 April 2003 paroxysm. A multistep petrogenesis is proposed to account for the unique occurrence of sulphide globules in this composite pyrometamorphic xenolith. The initial stage is the pyrometamorphism of an already hydrothermally leached extrusive/subvolcanic vent system wall rock within the shallow volcano edifice. Successively, fragments of this wall rock were subject to further heating by continuous gas flux and interaction with Stromboli HP basalt at temperatures above 1000 °C to partially melt the xenolith. This is an open system process involving continuous exchange of volatile components between the gas flux and the evolving silicate melt. It is suggested that the reaction of plagioclase and ferromagnesian phenocrysts with SO2 and HCl from the volcanic gas during diffusion into the melt led to the formation of molecular CaCl in the melt, which then was released to the general gas flux. Sulphide formation is the consequence of the reaction of HCl dissolved into the melt from the gas phase, resulting in the release of H2 into the melt and lowering of fO2 driving reduction of the dissolved SO2.
