Most ultrasound-based processes root in empirical approaches. Because nearly all advances have been conducted in aqueous systems, there exists a paucity of information on sonoprocessing in other solvents, particularly ionic liquids (ILs). In this work, we modelled an ultrasonic horn-type sonoreactor and investigated the effects of ultrasound power, sonotrode immersion depth, and solvents thermodynamic properties on acoustic cavitation in nine imidazolium-based and three pyrrolidinium-based ILs. The model accounts for bubbles, acoustic impedance mismatch at interfaces, and treats the ILs as incompressible, Newtonian, and saturated with argon. Following a statistical analysis of the simulation results, we determined that viscosity and ultrasound input power are the most significant variables affecting the intensity of the acoustic pressure field (P), the volume of cavitation zones (V), and the magnitude of the maximum acoustic streaming surface velocity (u). V and u increase with the increase of ultrasound input power and the decrease in viscosity, whereas the magnitude of negative P decreases as ultrasound power and viscosity increase. Probe immersion depth positively correlates with V, but its impact on P and u is insignificant. 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ILs yielded the largest V and the fastest acoustic jets - 0.77 cm3 and 24.4 m s-1 for 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride at 60 W. 1-methyl-3-(3-sulfopropyl)-imidazolium-based ILs generated the smallest V and lowest u - 0.17 cm3 and 1.7 m s-1 for 1-methyl-3-(3-sulfopropyl)-imidazolium p-toluene sulfonate at 20 W. Sonochemiluminescence experiments validated the model.

Sensory cues such as vocalizations contain important social information. Processing social features of vocalizations (e.g., vocalizer identity, emotional state) necessitates unpacking the complex sound streams in song or speech; this depends on circuits in pallial cortex. But whether and how this information is then transferred to limbic and hypothalamic regions remains a mystery. Here, using gregarious, vocal songbirds (female Zebra finches), we identify a prominent influence of the auditory pallium on one specific node of the Social Behavior Network, the lateral ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMHl). Electrophysiological recordings revealed that social and non-social auditory stimuli elicited stimulus-specific spike trains that permitted stimulus differentiation in a large majority of VMHl single units, while transient disruption of auditory pallium elevated immediate early gene activity in VMHl. Descending functional connections such as these may be critical for the range of vertebrate species that rely on nuanced communication signals to guide social decision-making. As-built additively manufactured components for heat exchanger applications, suffer from high surface roughness. In this study, a novel ultrasonic-assisted electropolishing setup is designed and tested to reduce the internal surface roughness of a Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) additively manufactured copper (GRCop-42) heat exchanger component. In the electropolishing setup, the surface of the as-built heat exchanger is used as the anode while a bulk copper rod is used as the cathode. An electropolishing fluid consisting of CuCl2, HCl, and SiC abrasive particles was used as electrolyte media, along with ultrasonication. The effect of chemical constituents, ultrasonic duration, and abrasive particles on surface roughness reduction was studied. It was observed that the ultrasonic agitation condition assisted with the abrasive particles was beneficial to reduce the surface roughness of the heat exchanger sample (over 50%) through acoustic streaming and scrubbing effect. An addition of 1% bio-based trihexyltetradecyl phosphonium saccharinate ionic liquid improved the corrosion properties for the copper surface. Overall, to reduce the roughness of L-PBF additively manufactured samples of complicated shapes with internal features, this process could be a viable technique, where mechanical polishing is not possible and internal surfaces are not accessible. A three-dimensional model was established for coupled simulation of the physical field in a liquid subjected to dual-frequency ultrasonic vibration. The effect of sonotrode position, tip shape, and vessel on the distributions of acoustic pressure and acoustic streaming were clarified. The influence of physical fields on the solidification behavior of Mg alloy was investigated. The simulation results show that the interaction between the two ultrasounds was weakened as the sonotrode spacing increased, and the radiating angle had little effect on the acoustic pressure distribution. The volume mean pressure in the liquid radiated by the plane tip was the smallest, but with the greatest acoustic streaming intensity. In contrast, the spherical tip radiated the highest volume mean pressure in the liquid medium, but the acoustic streaming was severely suppressed. Attributed to the smooth spherical surface that facilitated fluid flow, high flow velocity could be achieved using a round-bottomed crucible without severe acoustic pressure attenuation. The experimental results show that cavitation and acoustic flow caused the coarse dendrites to turn into fine isometric crystals. The acoustic flow accelerated the melt flow and alleviated the segregation and precipitation of Zn elements, leading to a decrease in the content and size of the second phase in the billet.

Copper matrix composites with dual-scale particles were fabricated through casting with reaction. Ultrasonic vibration has been successfully introduced into the melt at about 1523 K while the microstructural development and mechanism of copper matrix composites with high-performance through a novel method of casting with ultrasonic vibration treatment are investigated. When ultrasonic vibration is applied, the distribution of micro-scale particles is greatly improved. Primary Cr phase convents to non-dendrite and large aggregates of ZrB2 particles are disrupted into small clusters because of acoustic cavitation and acoustic streaming. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation of Cu-1wt%Cr-0.3 wt%Zr-1wt%ZrB2 composite in as-cast state were 321 MPa and 14.37 %, recording a 28.4 % and 14 % increment respectively compared with the sample without treatment. After solution treatment, deformation and aging subsequently, the uniform distribution of reinforcements also decreases the average transverse grain thickness and increases the dislocation density which improve the comprehensive properties.

In this work, a new treatment method combining ultrasonic vibration with FeCoNiCrCu high entropy alloy (HEA) coating was used to prepared Al/Mg bimetal through the lost foam compound casting. The effects of composite treatment involving ultrasonic vibration and HEA coating on interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of Al/Mg bimetal were studied. Results demonstrate that the interface thickness of the Al/Mg bimetal with composite treatment significantly decreases to only 26.99% of the thickness observed in the untreated Al/Mg bimetal. The HEA coating hinders the diffusion between Al and Mg, resulting the significant reduction in Al/Mg intermetallic compounds in the interface. The Al/Mg bimetal interface with composite treatment is composed of Al3Mg2 and Mg2Si/AlxFeCoNiCrCu+FeCoNiCrCu/δ-Mg+Al12Mg17 eutectic structures. The interface resulting from the composite treatment has a lower hardness than that without treatment. The acoustic cavitation and acoustic streaming effects generated by ultrasonic vibration promote the diffusion of Al elements within the HEA coating, resulting in a significant improvement in the metallurgical bonding quality on the Mg side. The fracture position shifts from the Mg side of the Al/Mg bimetal only with HEA coating to the Al side with composite treatment. The shear strength of the Al/Mg bimetal increases from 32.16 MPa without treatment to 63.44 MPa with ultrasonic vibration and HEA coating, increasing by 97.26%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pansori, a traditional Korean form of musical storytelling, is characterized by performances involving a vocalist and a drummer. It is well-known for the singer's expressive narrative (aniri) and delicate gesture with fan in hand. The classical Pansori repertoires mostly tell love, satire, and humor, as well as some social lessons. These performances, which can extend from three to five hours, necessitate that the vocalist adheres to precise rhythmic structures. The distinctive rhythms of Pansori are crucial for conveying both the narrative and musical expression effectively. This paper explores the challenge of open-set recognition, aiming to efficiently identify unknown Pansori rhythm patterns while applying the methodology to diverse acoustic datasets, such as sound events and genres. We propose a lightweight deep learning-based encoder–decoder segmentation model, which employs a 2-D log-Mel spectrogram as input for the encoder and produces a frame-based 1-D decision along the temporal axis. This segmentation approach, processing 2-D inputs to classify frame-wise rhythm patterns, proves effective in detecting unknown patterns within time-varying sound streams encountered in daily life. Throughout the training phase, both center and supervised contrastive losses, along with cross-entropy loss, are minimized. This strategy aimed to create a compact cluster structure within the feature space for known classes, thereby facilitating the recognition of unknown rhythm patterns by allocating ample space for their placement within the embedded feature space. Comprehensive experiments utilizing various datasets—including Pansori rhythm patterns (91.8%), synthetic datasets of instrument sounds (95.1%), music genres (76.9%), and sound datasets from DCASE challenges (73.0%)—demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed method to detect unknown events, as evidenced by the AUROC metrics. Simple Summary: The listening brain must resolve the mix of sounds that reaches our ears into events, sources, and meanings. In this process, noise—sound that interferes with our ability to detect or understand sounds we need or wish to—is the primary challenge when listening. Importantly, noise to one person, or in one moment, might be an important sound to another, or in the next. Despite the many challenges posed by noise, however, human listeners generally outperform even the most sophisticated listening technologies in noisy listening environments. Because extracting noise from the sound stream is a fundamental process in listening, understanding how the brain deals with noise, in its many facets, is essential to understanding listening itself. Here, we explore what it is that the brain treats as noise and how it is processed. We conclude that the brain has multiple mechanisms for detecting and filtering out noise, and that incorporating cortico-subcortical 'listening loops' into our studies is essential to understanding this early segregation between noise and signal streams. What is noise? When does a sound form part of the acoustic background and when might it come to our attention as part of the foreground? Our brain seems to filter out irrelevant sounds in a seemingly effortless process, but how this is achieved remains opaque and, to date, unparalleled by any algorithm. In this review, we discuss how noise can be both background and foreground, depending on what a listener/brain is trying to achieve. We do so by addressing questions concerning the brain's potential bias to interpret certain sounds as part of the background, the extent to which the interpretation of sounds depends on the context in which they are heard, as well as their ethological relevance, task-dependence, and a listener's overall mental state. We explore these questions with specific regard to the implicit, or statistical, learning of sounds and the role of feedback loops between cortical and subcortical auditory structures. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of flow-induced noise characteristics in ethylene cracking furnace tubes, covering both pre- and postcoking conditions. Large-eddy simulation (LES) was employed in conjunction with a generalized Lighthill's acoustic analogy model. The results indicate that noise sources can be classified as dipole acoustic sources, with energy primarily concentrated ranged from 300 to 1500 Hz, in comparison to standard conditions. The primary location of the acoustic source was identified in the region commonly referred to as the "necking" of the furnace tube, demonstrating a strong correlation with turbulence intensity near the tube wall. As the coke layer thickness in the furnace tube increased from 5 mm to 15 mm, both the sound power level and turbulence intensity exhibited significant growth. Specifically, the sound power level increased by 60.5% while the turbulence intensity increased by 58.5%. Variations in the overall sound pressure level (OASPL) curve measured within the tube could be utilized to assess coking levels. Significant peaks in the OASPL curve were observed as the furnace tube underwent substantial coking, with coke layer thicknesses of 10 mm and 15 mm. The corresponding OASPL values recorded were 79.25 dB and 119.08 dB, respectively. Lateral flow membrane microdevices are widely used for chromatographic separation processes and diagnostics. The separation performance of microfluidic lateral membrane devices is determined by mass transfer limitations in the membrane, and in the liquid phase, mass transfer resistance is dependent on the channel dimensions and transport properties of the species separated by the membrane. We present a novel approach based on an active bulk acoustic wave (BAW) mixing method to enhance lateral transport in micromachined silicon devices. BAWs have been previously applied in channels for mixing and trapping cells and particles in single channels, but this is, to the best of our knowledge, the first instance of their application in membrane devices. Our findings demonstrate that optimal resonance is achieved with minimal influence of the pore configuration on the average lateral flow. This has practical implications for the design of microfluidic devices, as the channels connected through porous walls under the acoustic streaming act as 760 µm-wide channels rather than two 375 µm-wide channels in the context of matching the standing pressure wave criteria of the piezoelectric transducer. However, the roughness of the microchannel walls does seem to play a significant role in mixing. A roughened (black silicon) wall results in a threefold increase in average streaming flow in BAW mode, suggesting potential avenues for further optimization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of spraying power on the microstructure and wear resistance of Ni-10 wt. %Al coating plasma sprayed with a 500 Hz sound vibration has been investigated. With the application of sound vibration, the compactness, cohesive bonding strength, and wear resistance of the coatings are all much higher. Meanwhile, with the increase of spraying power, the enhancement degree of the compactness, cohesive bonding strength, and wear resistance of the coatings are all increased. The sound vibration effects, which contain sound pressure, acoustic streaming, and heat effect, on the molten droplets are increased for their increasing melting induced by increasing spraying power. The wetting, flowing, and solidification of the molten droplets are all affected. Better wetting and flowing of the molten droplets promote their bonding on the surface of substrates and the solidified molten droplets, and their filling in the gaps of the solidified droplets. The diffusion of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) has opened new research directions in the context of video content understanding and classification. Emotion recognition from videos aims to automatically detect human emotions such as anxiety and fear. It requires deeply elaborating multiple data modalities, including acoustic and visual streams. State-of-the-art approaches leverage transformer-based architectures to combine multimodal sources. However, the impressive performance of MLLMs in content retrieval and generation offers new opportunities to extend the capabilities of existing emotion recognizers. This paper explores the performance of MLLMs in the emotion recognition task in a zero-shot learning setting. Furthermore, it presents a state-of-the-art architecture extension based on MLLM content reformulation. The performance achieved on the Hume-Reaction benchmark shows that MLLMs are still unable to outperform the state-of-the-art average performance but, notably, are more effective than traditional transformers in recognizing emotions with an intensity that deviates from the average of the samples. In orthopedic surgery, cortical bone cutting usually involves washing and cooling with physiological saline. However, how the saline changes the cutting behaviors of bone ultrasonic vibration cutting remains challenging. Hence, this paper simulates the clinical ultrasonic cutting condition in orthopedics to reveal the cutting behaviors of bone ultrasonic vibration orthogonal cutting immersed in physiological saline. The dynamic equation and motion process curves of ultrasonic cavitation bubbles were established. The results showed that the bone cutting immersed in physiological saline significantly improved the surface quality, reduced surface roughness and mechanical damage, and avoided large brittle cracks propagation. In saline immersed cutting, the physiological saline changes the mechanical behaviors of bone materials, resulting in plastic behaviors for the material removal and crack deflection. This study establishes the influence of physiological saline on the ultrasonic vibration cutting performance, providing guidance for orthopedic bone cutting surgery methods.

The electrodeposition process confronts significant challenges arising from mass transfer limitation and residual stress. To address these issues, an innovative method, combining megasonic agitation with coaxial jet electrodeposition, is introduced. This approach aims to enhance mass transfer and mitigate residual stress. First, an electrodeposition nozzle device was designed, and the liquid-phase mass transfer during electrodeposition was analyzed through finite element simulation. Simulation results indicate that the mass transfer coefficient increases with rising megasonic power density. Notably, when the megasonic power density reached 20 W/cm2, the mass transfer coefficient increased from 0.45 × 10−7 m/s to 18.63 × 10−7 m/s, compared to electrodeposition without megasonic agitation. Secondly, electrodeposition experiments were conducted both with and without megasonic assistance. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to measure the residual stress values of the electrodeposited layers. The results reveal that samples processed with megasonic assistance exhibit lower residual stress values compared to those without. Specifically, at a megasonic power density of 10 W/cm2, the residual stress was 94.3 MPa, representing a 37.7 % reduction compared to the residual stress of 151.5 MPa observed in samples without megasonic agitation. Overall, the findings demonstrate that coaxial megasonic agitation can effectively enhance the liquid-phase mass transfer capability during electrodeposition and reduce the residual stress of the electroplated layer. This innovative method presents a promising avenue for improving electrodeposition processes and achieving superior material properties.

Future thermoacoustic cryocoolers employing hydrogen as a working fluid can reduce reliance on helium and improve hydrogen liquefaction processes. Traditional thermoacoustic modeling methods often assume ideal-gas thermophysical properties and neglect finite-amplitude effects. However, these assumptions are no longer valid for hydrogen near saturated states. In this study, a comparison between the results of computational fluid dynamics simulations using actual hydrogen properties and a low-amplitude, ideal-gas thermoacoustic theory was carried out in a canonical plate-based stack configuration at a mean pressure of 5 bar. It was found that the simplified analytical theory significantly underpredicts the cooling power of hydrogen-filled thermoacoustic setups, especially at lower temperatures in high-amplitude, traveling-wave arrangements. In addition, a thermoacoustic prime mover was modeled at higher temperatures, demonstrating very close agreement with the ideal-gas-based theory. Today, microfluidics has become a revolutionary interdisciplinary topic with considerable attention in a wide range of biotechnology applications. In this research work, a numerical investigation of a microfluidic micromixer is carried out using a hybrid actuation approach with different micropillar shapes and gaps. For this purpose, COMSOL Multiphysics v.5.2. is used with three different physics, such as thermoviscous acoustic physics to solve acoustic governing equations, laminar physics to solve fluid flow governing equations, and diluted transport species to solve mixing governing equations. The simulations were carried out at different Reynolds numbers such as 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 with an oscillation frequency of 15 kHz. The results were in the form of acoustic characteristics such as acoustic pressure, acoustic velocity, acoustic stream, mixing index, and fluid flow behaviour at various Reynolds numbers. The results revealed that the inclusion of micropillars improved the mixing performance and strength of the acoustic field, resulting in an improvement of the mixing performance compared to the case without micropillars. In addition, the mixing performance is also investigated at different Reynolds numbers, and a higher mixing index is investigated at lower Reynolds numbers. Moreover, it was also investigated that blade-shaped micropillars with 0.150 mm gaps deliver the best results compared to the other cases, and the maximum and minimum values of the mixing index are 0.97 and 0.72, respectively, at Reynolds number 2. The main reason behind this larger mixing index at low Reynolds numbers is due to the inclusion of micropillars that enhance the diffusion rate and contact area, leading to the homogenisation of the heterogeneous fluids in the microchamber. The vibro-acoustic responses of coupled pump-jet-submarine systems excited by fluid excitations on the wall of the duct are numerically investigated. The unsteady excitations are calculated by computational fluid dynamics and the vibration responses for different excitations on the inner and outer walls are contrastively analyzed through establishing a finite element model of the coupled system. Meanwhile, the effect of fluid–structure interaction and the excitation loading methods for the inner flow of duct are considered. The sound radiation characteristics for different excitation sources are predicted through using a boundary element model. The results show that the excitation force spectra of the inner wall have a remarkable discrete peak at blade passing frequency and its multiple, while the excitation force spectra of the outer wall show a broadband characteristic and discrete components appear at blade passing frequency. The modes of hull both dominate the vibro-acoustic responses of the coupled system for different excitation sources of the duct. The transmitted energy for inner excitation forces is significantly greater than that of outer excitation forces, but the sound radiation efficiency is relatively close. The excitations of the duct can transfer to the thrust bearing through stators as well as the hull and cause a coupled vibration between the duct–stator–hull and the shafting system. Due to the three-dimensional non-axisymmetric shape of the volute, its interaction with the impeller increases the internal flow field complexity and instability of the marine centrifugal pump, representing the main reason for pump body vibration and hydraulic noise. First, the basic principle of fluid machinery noise calculation was explained based on the Lighthill acoustic analogy method and Curle's theory. Then, the fluid pressure pulsation and flow characteristics of centrifugal pumps were analyzed using the Fluent software, after which the Actran software was used to examine the flow-induced vibration noise properties. The results showed that the clearance size significantly impacted the pump head, while the peak value of the flow-induced vibration response was mainly twice the blade frequency. Although a larger ring clearance increased the structural vibration, it had little impact on the sound pressure level changes in the external sound field. To solve the problem of array detection performance in environments with mesoscale eddies, this study utilizes the Gaussian eddy model to describe the sound speed structure disturbed by eddies. Through numerical simulations, the corresponding sound field is obtained, and the transmission loss influenced by the eddy is analyzed. Furthermore, to investigate the relation between the array gain and spatial correlation in the eddy environments, the differences in vertical correlation at different positions and their effects on the vertical array gain of conventional beamforming (CBF) are studied. When the source is around the eddy center, the conclusions drawn are as follows: (1) The presence of an eddy changes the turning-point depth and the sound field distribution, significantly affecting the direct sound region and the first convergence zone, while having a minor impact on the first shadow zone. (2) In different eddy-induced environments, the first convergence zone maintains a high vertical correlation, but the vertical correlation of the direct sound region is greatly influenced by the eddy. (3) The array gain of CBF is consistent with the vertical correlation. By leveraging the benefits of a high energy density, miniaturization and integration, acoustic-wave-driven micromotors have recently emerged as powerful tools for microfluidic actuation. In this study, a Lamb-wave-driven micromotor is proposed for the first time. This motor consists of a ring-shaped Lamb wave actuator array with a rotor and a fluid coupling layer in between. On a driving mechanism level, high-frequency Lamb waves of 380 MHz generate strong acoustic streaming effects over an extremely short distance; on a mechanical design level, each Lamb wave actuator incorporates a reflector on one side of the actuator, while an acoustic opening is incorporated on the other side to limit wave energy leakage; and on electrical design level, the electrodes placed on the two sides of the film enhance the capacitance in the vertical direction, which facilitates impedance matching within a smaller area. As a result, the Lamb-wave-driven solution features a much lower driving voltage and a smaller size compared with conventional surface acoustic-wave-driven solutions. For an improved motor performance, actuator array configurations, rotor sizes, and liquid coupling layer thicknesses are examined via simulations and experiments. The results show the micromotor with a rotor with a diameter of 5 mm can achieve a maximum angular velocity of 250 rpm with an input voltage of 6 V. Live streaming e-commerce has been booming in recent years. This paper investigates the pricing and live streaming adoption strategies of competitive e-commerce firms. We consider the differences in product quality and consumer heterogeneity and establish a duopoly competitive Hotelling model. Taking into account consumers' uncertain perception of product quality and live streaming costs, the equilibrium outcomes are examined. Our findings indicate that (1) e-commerce firms selling high-quality products should consider adopting live streaming, while others should avoid it if consumers hold moderate product quality expectations. (2) E-commerce firms can be more profitable without live streaming when the market expectation or perceived quality of the products is high. (3) If only the e-commerce firm selling high-quality products utilizes live streaming, the optimal price would be lower, even when the product quality is relatively high, provided that the perceived quality is very high. This paper investigates three common sales modes with live streaming commerce, including e-commerce platform mode, transferring mode and live streaming platform mode (abbreviated as E, T and L, respectively). Using game-theoretical method, we study how participants choose sales modes with consumer return. The findings show that for the seller and platforms, each mode may be the best, depending on basic net sales volume and channel rate. However, for the streamer, mode T will never be the best. On the other hand, product quality in mode L is always higher than that in mode T, and higher than that in mode E when live streaming platform's basic net sales volume is high. The booming live streaming business has increased the number of consumer options for purchase channels, which has had a significant impact on firm sales models and management practices. This paper considers a multiechelon supply chain in which an upstream supplier can sell products through an online platform and a live streaming sales channel, and the online platform can choose to sign a reselling agreement or an agency selling agreement with the supplier. By constructing a Stackelberg game, we theoretically derive the equilibrium strategies of the supply chain members under different selling agreements in the presence of a live streaming sales channel. Specifically, we find that under the reselling agreement, the optimal retail price for the platform decreases with an increase in the commission rate, while the retail price for the live streaming channel always increases with an increase in the commission rate, and the relationship between the wholesale price and the commission rate depends on the ratio of the coefficient on the internet celebrity's effort for the live streaming channel to that for the online platform. Under the agency selling agreement, there is a threshold in the agency fee. The impact of the commission rate on pricing strategy on one side of the threshold is opposite that on the other side. Furthermore, we numerically explore the impacts of the system parameters on the selection of the sales model, profit, and the decision-making of the supply chain members and identify the conditions under which agency selling and reselling are chosen when there is a live streaming sales channel. Interestingly, we find that the internet celebrity should not charge a commission rate that is too large; otherwise, it harms others without benefiting the celebrity. Moreover, when the supplier chooses to hire an internet celebrity to sell goods via live streaming, the supplier should choose a celebrity with either an extremely large following or with little influence but should not choose a celebrity with only moderate influence. Acoustic streaming enabled by a Lamb wave resonator (LWR) is efficient for particle trapping and enrichment in microfluidic channels. However, because Lamb waves combine the features of bulk acoustic waves and surface acoustic waves, the resulting acoustic streaming in the LWR occurs in multiple planes, and the particle flow behavior in this acoustofluidic system is largely unknown. Reported here are numerical simulations and laboratory experiments conducted to investigate the boundary conditions for particle motion inside a microvortex induced by an LWR. Upon dynamic capture, the particles' trajectories become orbital paths within an acoustic vortex. The suspended particles encounter two distinct acoustic phenomena, i.e., the drag force resulting from acoustic streaming and the acoustic radiation force, which exert forces in various directions on the particles. When the acoustic radiation force and the fluid drag force are dominant for large and small particles in a mixed solution, respectively, the large particles reside within the vortex while the small particles remain at its periphery. Conversely, when the acoustic radiation force is dominant for both types of particles, the distribution pattern is reversed. Exact analytical solution of the Navier–Stokes equations, that describes, in the Boussinesq approximation, the flow of an incompressible liquid in the horizontal, plane layer with solid boundaries, rotating about a vertical axis, is presented. The flow of the liquid in this layer is advective and thermoacoustic in nature, and it is due to the constant longitudinal temperature gradient at the boundaries of the layer and to the acoustic wave propagating in it. The length of this wave is assumed to be comparable with the thickness of the layer, and the period of acoustic vibrations of the liquid in it is small compared to the characteristic convection times. Because of this, it is advantageous to define the averaged liquid flow in the layer. The properties of the solution obtained are investigated and the influence of the Taylor number of the liquid flow on its velocity and temperature profiles at constant Grashof, Reynolds, and Prandtl numbers is determined. With the flourishing of live streaming e-commerce, many brand manufacturers have sought to increase product sales and profits through live streaming. However, a high return rate, mainly caused by substandard product quality, is a thorny issue for the live e-commerce industry. In this study we develop game-theoretic models to explore the optimal cooperation strategies for a brand manufacturer and an influencer that improve profits and reduce the return rate by considering heterogeneous consumers’ purchase and return behaviour. We also conduct a sensitivity analysis on the proportion of followers and consumers’ sensitivity to product quality. In addition, we extend the models to explore other issues. We find that the cooperation between the influencer and brand manufacturer to improve product quality will lead to a lower return rate, and higher product quality, sales, and profits. Specifically, when the commission rate is relatively high and the percentage of the influencer’s quality investment is relatively low, both the brand manufacturer and influencer will gain more profits. When the influencer endogenously determines the quality of the product, quality cooperation increases the influencer’s profit but decreases the brand manufacturer’s profit. Long-term cooperation increases the influencer’s profit, while the impact on the brand manufacturer’s profit is influenced by the live streaming spillover effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As an important control element in steam heating piping systems, the safety and stability of inverted bucket steam valves determine the reliable operation of the system. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the acoustic mechanism of inverted bucket steam valves. Aiming at the difficulty of numerical simulation in accurately predicting the aerodynamic noise of inverted bucket steam valves, this paper proposes a new method for simulating the aerodynamic noise of inverted bucket steam valves based on multiband analysis (LES). The flow field of the inverted bucket steam valve is numerically simulated using the LES method to obtain wall pressure pulsation information and fluid velocity pulsation information, which are used as excitation sources for acoustic simulation. The characteristics of dipole and quadrupole sound sources were obtained by applying the FW-H method and experimentally verified. The results show that a new multifrequency band analysis method for inverted bucket steam valves is effective by comparing the numerical simulation results, in which the dipole source dominates in the low-frequency band, in the medium frequency range, the quadrupole source outperforms the dipole source, but in the high frequency range, the quadrupole source is dominant. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulation results, and the correctness of the numerical simulation is confirmed by the fact that there is less than a 3% difference between the findings of the numerical simulation and the experimental data. Protein molecules adsorb on the air/liquid interface due to possessing a hydrophobic side. A full surface coverage is important in many processes such as in protein harvesting by foam fractionation. The adsorption of proteins in low concentration solutions is preceded by a relatively long time lag known as the induction period. This has been attributed to the formation of an adsorbed monolayer, which relies on the reorientation of the protein molecules. The reduction of the induction period can significantly facilitate the sorption process to reach full protein coverage. For this purpose acoustically induced non-spherical bubble oscillations can aid in the formation of the monolayer and enhance the sorption process. In this study, low frequency ultrasound was used to induce non-spherical oscillations on an air bubble attached to a capillary. Profile analysis tensiometry was deployed to examine the effect of these non-spherical oscillations on the sorption dynamics of different proteins. We observed that during the initial stages of adsorption, when the bubble surface is almost empty, non-spherical oscillations occur, which were found to significantly expedite the adsorption process. However, during later stages of the adsorption process, despite the continued presence of several sonication phenomena such as the primary radiation force and acoustic streaming, no change in adsorption behavior of the proteins could be noted. The occurrence, duration, and intensity of the non-spherical bubble oscillations appeared to be the sole contributing factors for the change of the sorption dynamics of proteins. Real-world listening settings often consist of multiple concurrent sound streams. To limit perceptual interference during selective listening, the auditory system segregates and filters the relevant sensory input. Previous work provided evidence that the auditory cortex is critically involved in this process and selectively gates attended input toward subsequent processing stages. We studied at which level of auditory cortex processing this filtering of attended information occurs using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a naturalistic selective listening task. Forty-five human listeners (of either sex) attended to one of two continuous speech streams, presented either concurrently or in isolation. Functional data were analyzed using an inter-subject analysis to assess stimulus-specific components of ongoing auditory cortex activity. Our results suggest that stimulus-related activity in the primary auditory cortex and the adjacent planum temporale are hardly affected by attention, whereas brain responses at higher stages of the auditory cortex processing hierarchy become progressively more selective for the attended input. Consistent with these findings, a complementary analysis of stimulus-driven functional connectivity further demonstrated that information on the to-be-ignored speech stream is shared between the primary auditory cortex and the planum temporale but largely fails to reach higher processing stages. Our findings suggest that the neural processing of ignored speech cannot be effectively suppressed at the level of early cortical processing of acoustic features but is gradually attenuated once the competing speech streams are fully segregated. Collisionless shocks are generated via the magnetic field mediated by Weibel instability in astrophysical systems. In this work, by performing particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, Weibel instability-mediated magnetic field amplification is investigated for initially unmagnetized, spatially uniform, counter-streaming electron–positron (e−/e+) plasma flows and compared with the magnetic amplification for nonuniform counter-streaming e−/e+ plasma flows by considering their drift velocity of 0.5 c . Our simulation results show that initially, the magnetic field grows exponentially in the linear regime and then decays further after saturation for homogeneous e−/e+ plasma flows. However, in the case of inhomogeneous counter-streaming e−/e+ plasma flow, the magnetic field re-amplifies in the post-saturation region after the first saturation. It is found that the amplification magnitude of magnetic field energy in the post-saturation region is related to the density fluctuations for upstream plasma. Our calculations show that temperature anisotropy is the reason behind the second saturation of the magnetic field energy in the case of inhomogeneous plasma distribution. Such inhomogeneous media in astrophysical systems like Gamma-ray bursts are common. Therefore, this study will be useful for understanding collisionless shocks' formation and their effects. Application of the reciprocity principle to evaluate the acoustic radiation from arbitrary multilayered fluid and solid materials is described. To include the effect of shear motion in surrounding media, including viscosity in a fluid, equations for the acoustic radiation from such materials under point force excitation are developed in terms of reflection and transmission coefficients for longitudinal and shear waves. Calculations for forcing on either side of the layered material and in arbitrary directions, and for any asymmetric layer arrangements, are conducted. The frequency range of the calculations is not restricted by thin-plate or thick-plate theory. The test case for the radiation from plates embedded in a viscous and attenuating fluid has been investigated in detail. The effect of viscosity and attenuation has been quantified and shown to be significant at high frequencies. Application to the problem of flow noise is also briefly discussed. Gigahertz acoustic streaming enables the synthesis of localized microjets reaching speeds of up to meters per second, offering tremendous potential for precision micromanipulation. However, theoretical and numerical investigations of acoustic streaming at these frequencies remain so far relatively scarce due to significant challenges including: (i) the inappropriateness of classical approaches, rooted in asymptotic development, for addressing high-speed streaming with flow velocities comparable to the acoustic velocity; and (ii) the numerical cost of direct numerical simulations generally considered as prohibitive. In this paper, we investigate high-frequency bulk streaming using high-order finite difference direct numerical simulations. First, we demonstrate that high-speed micrometric jets of several meters per second can only be obtained at high frequencies, due to diffraction limits. Second, we establish that the maximum jet streaming speed at a given actuation power scales with the frequency to the power of 3/2 in the low attenuation limit and linearly with the frequency for strongly attenuated waves. Last, our analysis of transient regimes reveals a dramatic reduction in the time required to reach the maximum velocity as the frequency increases (power law in –5/2), leading to characteristic time on the order of μs at gigahertz frequencies, and hence accelerations within the Mega-g range. This study measured Rayleigh and Schlichting streaming velocities via particle image velocimetry (PIV) in a standing wave field. Emphasis was placed on balancing high measurement accuracy with high spatial resolution in the boundary layer region. We aimed to achieve high resolution and enhanced measurement accuracy, typically a trade-off, by significantly increasing the aspect ratio of the interrogation window in the flow direction during PIV post-processing. The experiment operated under conditions with a duct axis streaming velocity of approximately 8.3 × 10 − 3 m/s in the measurement area. Increasing the aspect ratio from 1 to 21 reduced the standard deviation across the entire radial direction, which served as the accuracy index, from 8.05 × 10 − 3 m/s to 5.23 × 10 − 4 m/s (94% reduction). Additionally, the method's validity was confirmed through synthetic images with particles of known velocity. This verification demonstrated a decrease in the standard deviation comparable to the experimental images (97% reduction), aligning the analyzed velocity's radial distribution with the known streaming velocity distribution. In recent decades, the importance of surface acoustic waves, as a biocompatible tool to integrate with microfluidics, has been proven in various medical and biological applications. The numerical modeling of acoustic streaming caused by surface acoustic waves in microchannels requires the effect of viscosity to be considered in the equations which complicates the solution. In this paper, it is shown that the major contribution of viscosity and the horizontal component of actuation is concentrated in a narrow region alongside the actuation boundary. Since the inviscid equations are considerably easier to solve, a division into the viscous and inviscid domains would alleviate the computational load significantly. The particles' traces calculated by this approximation are excellently alongside their counterparts from the completely viscous model. The precise isolation of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from blood samples is a potent tool for cancer diagnosis and clinical prognosis. However, CTCs are present in extremely low quantities in the bloodstream, posing a significant challenge to their isolation. In this study, we propose a non-contact acoustic micropillar array (AMPA) chip based on acoustic streaming for the flexible, label-free capture of cancer cells. Three shapes of micropillar array chips (circular, rhombus, and square) were fabricated. The acoustic streaming characteristics generated by the vibration of microstructures of different shapes are studied in depth by combining simulation and experiment. The critical parameters (voltage and flow rate) of the device were systematically investigated using microparticle experiments to optimize capture performance. Subsequently, the capture efficiencies of the three micropillar structures were experimentally evaluated using mouse whole blood samples containing cancer cells. The experimental results revealed that the rhombus microstructure was selected as the optimal shape, demonstrating high capture efficiency (93%) and cell activity (96%). Moreover, the reversibility of the acoustic streaming was harnessed for the flexible release and capture of cancer cells, facilitating optical detection and analysis. The strength of cell adhesion is important in understanding the cell's health and in culturing them. Quantitative measurement of cell adhesion strength is a significant challenge in bioengineering research. For this, the present study describes a system that can measure cell adhesion strength using acoustic streaming induced by Lamb waves. Cells are cultured on an ultrasound transducer using a range of preculture and incubation times with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) just before the measurement. Acoustic streaming is then induced using several Lamb wave intensities, exposing the cells to shear flows and eventually detaching them. By relying upon a median detachment rate of 50 %, the corresponding detachment force, or force of cell adhesion, was determined to be on the order of several nN, consistent with previous reports. The stronger the induced shear flow, the more cells were detached. Further, we employed a preculture time of 8 to 24 h and a PBS incubation time of 0 to 60 min, producing cell adhesion forces that varied from 1.2 to 13 nN. Hence, the developed system can quantify cell adhesion strength over a wide range, possibly offering a fundamental tool for cell-based bioengineering.

Acoustic focusing of particle flow in microfluidics has been shown to be an efficient tool for particle separation for various chemical and biomedical applications. The mechanism behind the method is the selective effect of the acoustic radiation force on distinct particles. In this way, they can be selectively focused and separated. The technique can also be applied under stationary conditions, i.e., in the absence of fluid flows. In this study, the manipulation of self-propelled particles, such as Janus particles, in an acoustofluidic setup was investigated. In experiments with self-propelled Janus particles and passive beads, we explored the interplay between self-propulsion and the acoustic radiation force. Our results demonstrated unusual and potentially useful effects such as selective trapping, escape, and assisted escape in binary mixtures of active and passive particles. We also analyzed various aspects related to the behavior of Janus particles in acoustic traps in the presence and absence of flows.

The effects of helical flow in a blood vessel are investigated in a dynamic flow generator using surface acoustic wave (SAW) in the microfluidic device. The SAW, generated by an interdigital transducer (IDT), induces acoustic streaming, resulting in a stable and consistent helical flow pattern in microscale channels. This approach allows rapid development of helical flow within the channel without directly contacting the medium. The precise design of the window enables the creation of distinct unidirectional vortices, which can be controlled by adjusting the amplitude of the SAW. Within this device, optimal operational parameters of the dynamic flow generator to preserve the integrity of endothelial cells are found, and in such settings, the actin filaments within the cells are aligned to the desired state. Our findings reveal that intracellular Ca2+ concentrations vary in response to flow conditions. Specifically, comparable maximum intensity and graphical patterns were observed between low-flow rate helical flow and high-flow rate Hagen-Poiseuille flow. These suggest that the cells respond to the helical flow through mechanosensitive ion channels. Finally, adherence of monocytes is effectively reduced under helical flow conditions in an inflammatory environment, highlighting the atheroprotective role of helical flow. Helical flow in blood vessels is well known to prevent atherosclerosis. However, despite efforts to replicate helical flow in microscale channels, there is still a lack of in vitro models which can generate helical flow for analyzing its effects on the vascular system. In this study, we developed a method for generating steady and constant helical flow in microfluidic channel using acoustofluidic techniques. By utilizing this dynamic flow generator, we were able to observe the atheroprotective aspects of helical flow in vitro, including the enhancement of calcium ion flux and reduction of monocyte adhesion. A study concerning the influence of flow on the Herschel–Quincke duct is presented here, which includes the numerical model, the acoustic source and the absorption condition called the Perfectly Matched Layer. For the excitation of a sound field, a normal mode wave is placed at the inlet of the tube. The function of PML is to simulate the infinite tube and avoid the reflection of acoustic wave. To investigate the influence of flow field on sound field, a coupled calculation method combining the finite element method and computational fluid dynamics is used to solve the linearized Euler equation, named the Galbrun equation. Firstly, the influence of the cross-section of the tube on the acoustic field is considered. Secondly, the effects of flow on the acoustic field is also investigated. Lastly, a comparative analysis of the simulation results reveals the influence of flow and other parameters of the tube on sound propagation. Both the Mach number and the cross-section ratio have an influence on the acoustic resonance, and the resonance frequency decreases with the increase in the cross-section ratio. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered ideal nanoscale reinforcement for the development of high-performance metal matrix composites due to their unique structure and excellent mechanical properties. However, CNTs are easy to agglomerate and have poor wettability with the aluminum matrix, resulting in unsatisfactory effects when added to the aluminum melt. In this study, Cu-coated carbon nanotubes (Cu@CNTs)-reinforced aluminum matrix composites were fabricated by high-energy ultrasonic-assisted casting. Moreover, the effects of different Cu@CNTs content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminum matrix composites were explored. Meanwhile, Fluent 19.0 software was used to further explore the function of ultrasonic vibration in the melt. The results demonstrated that the mechanical properties of composite with 1.2 wt% Cu@CNTs are optimal. Compared with the matrix, the composite with 1.2 wt% Cu@CNTs displayed a 39.3% increase in yield strength, 53.5% increase in ultimate tensile strength, and 5.7% increase in elongation. The simulation results showed that the uniform dispersion of Cu@CNTs and grain refinement can be attributed to the acoustic streaming effect and cavitation effect of high-energy ultrasound. The effects of ultrasonic treatment on grain refinement and hydrogen removal in three kinds of magnesium alloys—Mg-3Ca, Mg-6Zn-1Ca, and AZ80 alloys—were investigated in this study. After ultrasonic treatment, the grains of the magnesium alloys were refined to varying degrees. The degassing effect was characterized by measuring the densities and hydrogen content of ingots. The results indicated that the application of ultrasonic treatment in these magnesium alloys was able to remove hydrogen and obviously refine the microstructure. In this experiment, both the measurement of the density of the ingots and the solid-state hydrogen measurement reflected the degree of degassing. The highest degassing efficiencies were 53.8%, 67.5%, and 34.9% for the Mg-3Ca, Mg-6Zn-1Ca, and AZ80 alloys, respectively. The lowest hydrogen content of the AZ80 alloy reached 8.2 cm3/100 g, and the corresponding tensile strengths were 174 Mpa, 79 Mpa, and 6.2%, which represented increases of 41.5%, 38.6%, and 87.9%, respectively. The cavitation effect and acoustic streaming effect with an appropriate ultrasonic treatment duration resulted in grain refinement, degassing, and the uniform dispersion of second phases. To numerically simulate the acoustic propagation in fluids, a third-order compact finite volume method (FVM) that is suitable for three-dimensional (3D) hybrid unstructured grids is developed. It is used to solve the linear Euler equations (LEEs). Furthermore, the corresponding linear lattice Boltzmann flux solver (LBFS) is constructed. The conservative form of LEEs is discretized according to the third-order Gaussian quadrature rules. Based on the stencils only involving the neighboring cells of the control volume, high-order polynomials are constructed. By ensuring that the variables and their derivatives are conserved in the stencil, the unknown coefficients are determined using the least-square method. To satisfy the moment relations, the distribution function expression is determined by solving the equation system. Finally, the mesoscopic flux calculation scheme for LEEs is constructed based on the derived lattice model. The proposed high-order FVM is suitable for 3D hybrid unstructured grids, which makes it highly adaptable. It makes the selection of stencils and disposal of ghost cells simple due to its compact characteristics. Moreover, the proposed FVM extends the application of LBFS from traditional fluid equations to 3D LEEs. Therefore, the proposed flux solver has the advantages of Boltzmann-based flux schemes. The first generation of haloes forms from the collapse of the smallest peaks in the initial density field. N -body simulations of this process suggest a prompt formation of a steep power-law cusp, but these calculations are plagued by numerical artefacts that cast some doubt on this result. Here, we develop new simulation methods based on the dark matter phase-space sheet approach and present results that are entirely free of artificial clumps. We find that a cusp with density ρ ∝  r −1.5 is indeed formed promptly, subsequently accreting a more extended halo and participating in the hierarchical growth of later halo generations. However, our simulations also suggest that the presence of artificial clumps just before peak collapse can significantly shallow the inner profiles of the cusps. We use N -body simulations with controlled amounts of small-scale power to place a conservative upper limit on the scales affected by artificial clumps. Finally, we used these results to simulate the collapse of the first generation of peaks of various types and in different cosmologies, finding prompt cusps to form in all cases. We propose a hybrid Finite Volume (FV) - Spectral Element Method (SEM) for modeling aeroacoustic phenomena based on the Lighthill's acoustic analogy. First the fluid solution is computed employing a FV method. Then, the sound source term is projected onto the acoustic grid and the inhomogeneous Lighthill's wave equation is solved employing the SEM. The novel projection method computes offline the intersections between the acoustic and the fluid grids in order to preserve the accuracy. The proposed intersection algorithm is shown to be robust, scalable and able to efficiently compute the geometric intersection of arbitrary polyhedral elements. We then analyze the properties of the projection error, showing that if the fluid grid is fine enough we are able to exploit the accuracy of the acoustic solver and we numerically assess the obtained theoretical estimates. Finally, we address two relevant aeroacoustic benchmarks, namely the corotating vortex pair and the noise induced by a laminar flow around a squared cylinder, to demonstrate in practice the effectiveness of the projection method when dealing with high order solvers. The flow computations are performed with OpenFOAM [50] , an open-source finite volume library, while the inhomogeneous Lighthill's wave equation is solved with SPEED [34] , an open-source spectral element library. The recent identification of a modulation of acoustic waves that is driven by spatial velocity gradients, using acoustic black and white hole analogues [see Schenke, Sewerin, van Wachem, and Denner, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 154, 781–791 (2023)], has shed new light on the complex interplay of acoustic waves and non-uniform flows. According to the virtual acoustic black hole hypothesis, these findings should be applicable to acoustic waves propagating in non-uniform flows of arbitrary velocity. In this study, the propagation of acoustic waves in non-uniform flows is investigated by incorporating a leading-order model of acoustic pressure modulation into a Lagrangian wave tracking algorithm. Using this numerical method, the acoustic pressure modulation is recovered accurately in non-uniform subsonic flows. This suggests that spatial velocity gradients drive acoustic pressure modulations in any non-uniform flow, which can, as shown here, be readily quantified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
