Background: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves patients breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, above 1 atmosphere. Many centers are now promoting the use of HBOT for skin rejuvenation. However, the current indications for HBOT do not encompass aesthetic applications. Aim: The aim of this evidence‐based review was to assess the existing literature regarding the utilization of HBOT in medical aesthetics and rejuvenation, evaluate its effectiveness and safety, and conduct a cost analysis. Materials and Methods: PubMed Interface, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and Embase searches were carried out. The Best Bets methodology was used, and the risk of bias was appraised using the Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies. Results and Main Findings: This review included a total of 17 human studies with a total of 766 participants. Three studies were classified as level II evidence, three studies were of level III evidence, and 11 were of level IV evidence. All the included studies were judged at high risk of bias. The most relevant findings supported by level II evidence were that HBOT decreased the shedding rate post‐FUE hair transplant (27.6 ± 2.6% vs. 69.1 ± 2.4%) but this did not affect the final outcome between HBOT (96.9 ± 0.5%) and the control (93.8 ± 0.6%). Moreover, level III evidence demonstrated that following HBOT, there was a significant increase in elastic fiber length (p ≤ 0.0001, effect size = 2.71) and a significant decrease in fiber fragmentation (p = 0.012). There was also a significant increase in collagen fiber density following HBOT (p = 0.0001, effect size = 1.10). However, there was no significant effect of antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E with HBOT. The inflammatory response significantly decreased after 7 days of HBOT with a decreased expression of IL‐12p40, MIP‐1β, and PDGF‐BB and a higher expression of IL‐1Ra. Moreover, HBOT was used prophylactically prior to abdominoplasty to decrease the risk of complications. In this study, complications were decreased from 32.6% (89 patients) to 8.4% (7 patients) with a p < 0.001, and in a multivariate analysis, preoperative HBOT was an independent protective factor against postoperative complications (p < 0.001). Conclusion and Recommendations: There is conflicting evidence on how the method of action of HBOT can have a beneficiary effect in aesthetic and whether the treatment is justifiable. To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive review discussing the available evidence regarding the use of HBOT in many aesthetic clinical scenarios, including preventive, medical, and surgical settings. Objective: The present study was designed to investigate whether acellular dermal matrix (ADM) grafts could prevent Frey's syndrome (FS) and improve esthetic scores following parotidectomy. Methods: From January 2015 to December 2019, 175 patients underwent parotidectomy. We divided the patients into two groups: the ADM group and the control group. We included in each group 30 patients according to a propensity score matched analysis. Results: FS was subjective in 1 patient (3%) from the ADM group and 9 patients (30%) from the control group (P =0.015). Patients in the ADM group had a subjective esthetic score of 6.1 + 1.7 compared with 5.2 + 1.7 in the control group. The subjective esthetic score for patients in the ADM group was higher than that for patients in the control group (P =0.040). Conclusion: The present clinical study suggests that ADM grafts are effective in preventing FS and improving esthetic scores after parotidectomy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the intersection of art history and AI technology. Special attention is paid to Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), a machine learning technology widely used in AI art. This technology is particularly interesting to art history and the philosophy of art because it raises enduring questions about the creative process of artmaking, especially what constitutes a new and original work of art. While this is a relatively new area, it is possible to discern emerging directions where art and AI intersect. One pressing issue concerns the use (or misuse) of algorithmically enabled technologies and datasets to perpetuate longstanding art-historical biases. The critical position adopted in this paper shares this concern. I examine a notable example of GAN technology that claims to create original art styles. While such experiments in computational creativity are technically interesting, their artistic aims can be questionable. I argue a mechanical model of artistic development based solely on the autonomy of style is problematic for at least two reasons: 1) it uncritically reinstates a formalist view of art history; 2) it recreates a narrow style-centric ‘historical modernism.’ However, despite voicing these reservations, I also discuss the potential of this technology to engage with topics of critical relevance to art history and the philosophy of art. Polyurethanes are among the most significant types of polymers in development; these materials are used to produce construction products intended for work in various conditions. Nowadays, it is important to develop methods for fire load reduction by using new kinds of additives or monomers containing elements responsible for materials' fire resistance. Currently, additive antipyrines or reactive flame retardants can be used during polyurethane material processing. The use of additives usually leads to the migration or volatilization of the additive to the surface of the material, which causes the loss of the resistance and aesthetic values of the product. Reactive flame retardants form compounds containing special functional groups that can be chemically bonded with monomers during polymerization, which can prevent volatilization or migration to the surface of the material. However, this topic is still having many unmet needs nowadays. This document aimed to provide tips and recommendations that may help clinicians to achieve optimal and more predictable aesthetic outcomes.A multidisciplinary group of aesthetic medicine doctors from Spain and Portugal reviewed the tools used for assessing the patient and aesthetic outcomes, as well as the different techniques and products used in lips/perioral rejuvenation.The consensus panel provided specific recommendations focusing on the basic information to collect before performing the aesthetic procedure; comprehensive approach to lips/perioral region rejuvenation; clinical and aesthetic assessment tools; product and technique selection; patient profile and needs; and safety issues (complications/adverse‐events).The rapid evolution of techniques and tools for assessing the patient and aesthetic outcomes, as well as the development of new HA‐based fillers makes it necessary to update the clinical recommendations that guide the daily practice of clinicians, particularly those who have less experience with these procedures. As a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, the aesthetic value of bronze artifacts from the Shang and Chow Dynasties has had a profound influence on Chinese traditional culture and art. To facilitate the digital preservation and protection of these Shang and Chow bronze artifacts (SCB), it becomes imperative to categorize their decorative patterns. Therefore, a SCB pattern classification method of differential evolution called Shang and Chow Bronze Convolutional Neural Network (SCB-CNN) is proposed. Firstly, the original bronze decorative patterns of Shang and Chow dynasties are collected, and the samples are expanded through image augmentation technology to form a training dataset. Secondly, based on the classical convolutional neural network structure, the recognition and classification of bronze patterns are implemented by adjusting the network parameters. Then, the initial parameters of the convolutional neural network are optimized by differential evolution algorithm, and the optimized SCB-CNN is simulated. Finally, comparative experiments were conducted between the optimized SCB-CNN, the unoptimized model, VGG-Net, and GoogleNet. The experimental results indicate that the optimized SCB-CNN significantly reduces training time while maintaining fast prediction speed, convergence speed, and high accuracy. Background: According to social-ecological models, the built and natural environment has the potential to facilitate or hinder physical activity (PA). While this potential is well researched in urban areas, a current systematic review of how the built and natural environment is related to PA in rural areas is lacking. Methods: We searched five databases and included studies for adults (18–65 years) living in rural areas. We included quantitative studies investigating the association between any self-reported or objectively measured characteristic of the built or natural environment and any type of self-reported or objectively measured PA, and qualitative studies that reported on features of the built or natural environment perceived as barriers to or facilitators of PA by the participants. Screening for eligibility and quality assessment (using the Standard Quality Assessment Criteria for Evaluating Primary Research Papers from a Variety of Fields) were done in duplicate. We used a narrative approach to synthesize the results. Results: Of 2432 non-duplicate records, 51 quantitative and 19 qualitative studies were included. Convincing positive relationships were found between the availability and accessibility of places for exercise and recreation and leisure-time PA as well as between the overall environment and leisure-time PA. Possible positive associations were found between the overall environment and total and transport-related PA, between greenness/natural environment and total PA, between cycling infrastructure and aesthetics and MVPA, and between pedestrian infrastructure and total walking. A possible negative relationship was found between safety and security and total walking. Qualitative studies complemented several environmental facilitators (facilities for exercise and recreation, sidewalks or streets with low traffic, attractive natural environment) and barriers (lack of facilities and destinations, lack of sidewalks, speeding traffic and high traffic volumes, lack of street lighting). Conclusions: Research investigating the relationship between the built and natural environment and PA behaviors of adults living in rural areas is still limited and there is a need for more high-quality and longitudinal studies. However, our most positive findings indicate that investing in places for exercise and recreation, a safe infrastructure for active transport, and nature-based activities are possible strategies that should be considered to address low levels of PA in rural adults. Preaching is one of the most creative things a pastor does. This essay explores how a theology of creativity, the imagination, and the arts can encourage preachers to embrace proclamation as creative work. The invitation to preachers to engage their creativity and imagination in preaching rests on the theological claim that creativity is intrinsic to human beings as made in the image of God the Creator. To create is to realize a core human vocation and to deepen knowledge of God. The imagination is a primary avenue to such knowledge, since the imagination is a faculty that allows for a holistic grasp of realities both seen and unseen. An artistic approach to preaching is appropriate in that art functions in similar ways to preaching: like preaching, art explores the depths of human existence, creates wholes out of fragments, and makes connections between seemingly disparate phenomena. The dispositions of the artist are vital for preachers, especially the courage and risk-taking required in art-making as a venture into the unknown. These functions of art and qualities of the artist lead to reflections concerning the particular challenges involved in being a Christian artist, and to the role of beauty in the knowledge of God and hence in preaching. Aesthetic evaluation of increasingly complex and personalized human–computer interaction interfaces serves as a critical bridge between humans and machines, fundamentally enhancing various interaction factors. This study addresses the challenges in aesthetic evaluation by adjusting existing methodologies to incorporate seven aesthetic metrics: density, symmetry, balance, proportionality, uniformity, simplicity, and sequence. These metrics were effectively integrated into a composite evaluation metric through both multiple regression analysis and entropy methods, with the efficacy of both fitting methods validated. Leveraging automatic segmentation and recognition technology for interface screenshots, this research enables rapid, automated acquisition of evaluations for the seven metrics and the composite index, leading to the development of a prototype system for interface layout aesthetic assessment. Aimed at reducing the time, manpower, and resources required for interface evaluation, this study enhances the universality, compatibility, and flexibility of layout assessments. It promotes integration at any stage of the design process, significantly benefiting lightweight rapid evaluation and iterative design cycles, thereby advancing the field of interface aesthetic evaluation. Introduction: Oral disorders such as Traumatic Dental Injury (TDI) and Early Childhood Caries (ECC) can significantly impact the functional, social, and psychological well-being of growing children and their families. The Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) serves as a proxy assessment of Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in children, developed to evaluate the effects on the quality of life of preschool children. Aim: To assess the impact of oral disorders on the OHRQoL of children aged two to six years and their families. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 1000 children aged 2 to 6 years from various preschools in South Bangalore were selected. All children underwent examinations for caries, stains, and fractures. A modified questionnaire survey based on ECOHIS, consisting of 26 questions, was completed by the parents of the children. The answered questionnaire was then evaluated to assess the impact of dental conditions on the quality of life of both children and parents. Kruskal-Wallis Test, Dunn's post-hoc Test, and Mann-Whitney Test were used to compare the mean scores of different domains of the OHRQoL scale based on ECC and dental trauma, respectively. Results: The severity of ECC demonstrated an adverse effect on the symptom domain (p<0.001), function domain (p=0.002), psychology domain (p=0.03), and the entire score of the Child Impact Section (CIS) (p<0.001). In the Family Impact Section (FIS), the mean scores of the family distress domain and the overall FIS were statistically significant (p<0.001). Dental trauma also showed an adverse effect on the symptoms domain (p<0.001) and the entire scores of the CIS (p=0.001). Additionally, the mean scores of the family distress domain and the overall FIS were statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: The presence of ECC and dental trauma is likely to have a negative impact on the physical, psychological, and emotional well-being of preschool-aged children and their families. In pursuing advancing solar energy systems, this research uniquely occupies a position at the intersection of photovoltaic (PV) efficiency, innovative design and aesthetic integration into urban landscapes. This study explores the potential of thin solar cells applied to spherical and hemispherical surfaces and the influence of temperature variations throughout the day. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of voltage–current diagrams, the study deciphers the intricate interconnections of spherical geometries and their response to external thermal impacts, elucidating their subsequent effects on energy conversion efficiency. Moreover, it delved into the dynamics of connecting multiple spherical modules, unveiling their potential to form artistic and utilitarian constructs such as solar trees and architectural embellishments. The findings indicate that while spherical configurations provide superior aesthetics and a power generation profile comparable to solar tracking systems, hemispherical configurations offer a 32% increase in efficiency compared with the spherical configuration and a notable reduction in land footprint. This research underscores the importance of striking a balance between aesthetic appeal, efficiency and land utilization, providing valuable insights for the future of PV technology integration into urban and agricultural landscapes. OBJECTIVE: The population of the United States continues to grow in diversity, particularly within sex and gender. In recent years, there has been a surge in aesthetic procedures in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual (LGB) community. Herein, we discuss a tailored approach to these patient populations and offer guidance to address their concerns both safely and effectively based on a comprehensive review of the literature as well as a roundtable series focusing on diversity in aesthetics. METHODS: A literature search was conducted on PubMed using the following terms: "aesthetics," "cosmetics," "lesbian," "gay," and "bisexual." Additionally, an eight-part roundtable series focusing on diversity in aesthetics was conducted from August 2021 to August 2022. RESULTS: The results of the literature search as well as the discussion from the roundtable series addressing the LGB community are reviewed within. LIMITATIONS: We are limited by the paucity of data available in the existing literature. We also acknowledge differences within LGB subgroups and a need for individualization. CONCLUSION: A tailored approach to the LGB patient with regards to fillers, neuromodulators, and energy-based devices may offer improved patient satisfaction and safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The Restylane portfolio of soft tissue fillers spans a wide range of indications, due in part to their complementary manufacturing technologies [non‐animal stabilized hyaluronic acid (NASHA) and Optimal Balance Technology (OBT/XpresHAn)]. Using an array of products, injectors can achieve a holistic, natural looking effect for their patients. However, with a wide range of products it may be difficult to choose an optimal combination. Aim: Simplify and align global use recommendations for NASHA versus OBT products. Methods: Two pre‐meeting surveys were completed by 11 key opinion leaders with international representation, with the goal of collecting information regarding their current injection practices for various anatomical regions of the face (i.e., temporal region, forehead, tear trough, lateral zygoma, anteromedial cheek, nose, pyriform aperture, nasolabial fold, perioral area, lips, labiomental crease, marionette lines, chin, and jawline). The data collected from these surveys was subsequently discussed in a consensus group meeting involving 11 voting members and 3 nonvoting members. Results: Top product recommendations were identified for each anatomical area, along with secondary and tertiary recommendations that can also be used under defined circumstances. Recommendations were provided based on a consideration of elements such as patient features (e.g., skin thickness, bone structure), the desired aesthetic outcome, experience of the injector, and the preferred injection technique. Conclusion: A majority consensus regarding the top NASHA versus OBT product choice for each anatomical region of the face was reached. Background: Nowadays, multimodal cancer therapy results in very high survival rates of early-stage breast cancer and microsurgical flap-based breast reconstruction has become safe and reliable, with gradually increasing demand because of its durable and aesthetically pleasing results. This study aimed to explore the impact of different flap shaping and inset techniques on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) with regard to the aesthetic result in abdominal flap-based breast reconstruction. Methods: A systematic review was performed screening Pubmed, Cochrane Library and Web of Science for original articles reporting flap inset strategies, concomitantly providing PROMs on the aesthetic result. Results: Of 319 studies identified, six met the inclusion criteria. The studies described different flap rotation options according to the patient's morphology, different inset planes, and avoidance of the monitoring skin paddle, and suggested that a higher flap-to-mastectomy mass ratio was associated with better aesthetic results. In two comparative studies, according to the PROMs (BREAST-Q, Likert scale) and independent observer judgement, both higher patient satisfaction and superior aesthetic results were observed with the newly described techniques. Conclusions: Emphasis on the aesthetic outcome in terms of breast shape and symmetry, providing an individualized approach of flap inset, considering the contralateral breast's shape and volume, results in higher satisfaction scores. The unearthed Han Dynasty portrait stones are an important part of China's ancient artistic heritage, and detecting human images in these stones is a critical prerequisite for studying their artistic value. However, high-precision target detection techniques often result in a large number of parameters, making them unsuitable for portable devices. In this work, we propose a new human image target detection model based on an enhanced YOLO-v5. We discovered that the complex backgrounds, dense group targets, and significant scale variations of targets within large scenes in portrait stones present significant challenges for human target image detection. Therefore, we first incorporated the SPD-Conv convolution and Coordinate Attention self-attention mechanism modules into the YOLO-v5 architecture, aiming to enhance the model's recognition precision for small target images within Han portrait stones and strengthen its resistance to background disturbances. Moreover, we introduce DIoU NMS and Alpha-IoU Loss to improve the detector's performance in dense target scenarios, reducing the omission of densely packed objects. Finally, the experimental results from our collected dataset of Han Dynasty stone figure images demonstrate that our method achieves fast convergence and high recognition accuracy. Background: Botulinum toxin is a crucial therapeutic tool with broad indications in both cosmetic and medical fields. However, the expanding cosmetic use and increased dosages of botulinum toxin have raised concerns about resistance, making it essential to study the awareness and management practices among healthcare professionals. Methods: A survey was conducted among clinical physicians using botulinum toxin. The study investigated their experiences, awareness, and management practices related to toxin resistance. Real‐time mobile app‐based surveys were administered to clinicians attending the 45th International Academic Conference of the Korean Academy of Laser and Dermatology (KALDAT) on December 3, 2023. Results: Among 3140 participants, 673 clinical physicians completed the survey. Of these, 363 clinicians (53.9%) reported experiencing botulinum toxin resistance. Regarding the resistance rate, 59.4% indicated less than 1%, 36% reported approximately 1%–25%, and 95.4% reported less than 25%. Efforts to prevent resistance included maintaining intervals of over 3 months (54.8%), using products with lower resistance potential (47.0%), employing minimal effective doses (28.2%), and minimizing re‐administration (14.9%). Conclusion: In the South Korean aesthetic medicine community, a majority of clinical physician's report encountering botulinum toxin resistance. Given the potential loss of various benefits associated with resistance, there is a need to establish appropriate guidelines based on mechanistic studies and current status assessments. Based in part on interviews and fieldwork, this article analyzes how artworks produced during the Ukrainian Revolution (2013–2014) present the political emergence of the Ukrainian people as a collective fused by bonds of solidarity. At first characterized by a strong universal thrust, presenting a boundless democratic anticipation, this solidarity was subsequently contained by religious-political traditions and specific forms of self-sacrificing and masculinist nationalism, often projected as a revolutionary utopia in its own right, which has been operationalized in the defense against Russia’s invasion. To substantiate the argument, the text analyzes numerous artworks from the Ukrainian Revolution. These interpretations demonstrate how aesthetic acts contribute to the production of bonds of solidarity that transcend existing modes of political and cultural representation of Ukraine. Impostors, confidence artists, and artful deceivers seem to have achieved a strange kind of popularity and even prestige in our contemporary political landscape, for reasons that remain elusive, especially given how harmful and socially unwanted such behaviors ostensibly are. Herman Melville's 1857 novel, The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade, helps us shift our perspective on this seemingly irrational phenomenon because it points out how being susceptible to dupery is linked to the enjoyment of fiction itself. This insight also highlights the importance of epistemological failure in the recent "return to aesthetics" in literary studies, where the positive dimension of unconsciously "willing one's dupery" directly links aesthetic form to politics. The logic that connects aesthetics to unconscious enjoyment is then elaborated in the work of psychoanalytic thinkers such as Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Helene Deutsch and others to raise particular questions about how and why the enjoyment of being duped has been associated with feminine sexuality. Reading Melville's novel while considering psychoanalytic concepts such as the "as if" personality, imposture, and interpassivity illuminates how confidence games play upon the ruses of sexuality, which have profound implications for why the public remains in thrall to the workings of known deceivers. The question of aesthetics in film-theoretical discourse today is split between, on the one hand, a film-phenomenological or "filmosophical" approach that values the putatively immanent relation between film and the mind and, on the other, the naturalizing epistemology of post-theory, which reduces the question of film aesthetics to one of poetics. What unites these otherwise disparate projects is the consideration of aesthetics divorced from the question of politics; in both cases, the social or political significance of the film–spectator relationship has been summarily purged. In this article, I will offer an alternative account of film aesthetics that draws on Jacques Rancière's theory concerning the mutually determining relationship between aesthetics and politics. In particular, I will consider the relevance of Rancière's thesis concerning what he calls the distribution of sensible to current accounts, as well as taking up his novel consideration of aesthetic distance and the "emancipated" spectator. With respect to film phenomenology, I will examine how its film-theoretical program rests on the flawed concept of a de-politicized spectator enchained by the film image. With respect to post-theory, I will examine how its appropriation from cognitive science of the rational agent model of meaning making inappropriately limits the political potential of film aesthetics. The Tridentine Latin Mass (TLM) is rapidly growing in popularity. The movement that has formed around it has grown so attached to it as to threaten the unity of the Catholic Church. I attended TLMs in multiple distinct settings, studied the worshippers' ordinary theology, and proceeded hermeneutically using the Circle Method. The most useful insight to emerge from this is that the theological aesthetics of the post-Conciliar Mass could be more deeply symbolic and synergistic with Conciliar intellectual theology. The TLM's aesthetics offer worshippers assurances of certainty, but these assurances are empty. Therefore, parishes should facilitate the self-expression of the faithful, both to foster engagement with mystery and to inspire liturgical aesthetics. From these expressions, contextually meaningful symbols will emerge, which, through communal discernment guided by the Holy Spirit, may prove worthy to the task of enhancing liturgical aesthetics. Joseph Kosuth, one of Concept Art's influential practitioners, credited Marcel Duchamp in an important 1969 essay, "Art After Philosophy", with instigating the shift from the visual to the conceptual by means of indifference and dematerialization. Duchamp's approach to art was not limited, however, to the realm of artistic intention but also included the (re)contextualization provoked by his readymades. This (re)contextualization elucidated the embodied, dialogical encounters of the artist-artwork-audience, what I identify as an "aesthetics of difference". This designation sets forth a framework of meaning that draws upon a burgeoning subset of early-twentieth-century personalist philosophy called dialogical personalism in order to offer a more suitable plausibility structure than the usual explanations of Duchamp and his approach to art, which typically revolve around nihilism, absurdity, and a solipsistic understanding of freedom. In doing so, Duchamp's artistic approach retains not only a more viable ontology for continuing to question the nature of art, but also has important epistemological and ethical implications. The late Middle Ages witnessed a recapitulation of medieval reflection on beauty. Jean Gerson is an important representative of these philosophical and theological contributions, although he has been largely neglected up to this time. A first dimension of his ideas on beauty is the incorporation of beauty (pulchrum) into the number of transcendentals, i.e., the concepts "convertible" with the notion of being (ens), that is, unity, truth, and goodness (unum, verum and bonum). This article revisits Monica Calma's study on Gerson's theory of beauty and suggests new hypothetical sources that may have inspired this aspect of his thought. The second aspect emphasised here is Gerson's classification of beauty, which entails some similarities to the one of Ulrich of Strasbourg, but also differs from it. In this study, we focused on assessing the symmetry of shapes and quantifying an index of 'order' in three-dimensional shapes using curvature, which is important in product design. Specifically, the target three-dimensional shape was divided into two segments, and the Jensen–Shannon distance was calculated for the distribution of the Casorati curvatures in both segments to determine the similarity between them. This was proposed as an indicator of the 'order' exhibited by the shape. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed index, sensory evaluation experiments were conducted on three shapes: extruded, rotated, and vase. For the rotated shape, the coefficient of determination between the proposed index and the sensory evaluation value of 'order' on a 5-point Likert scale was found to be less than 0.1. The reason for the poor correlation coefficient of determination may be attributed to the bias in human perception, where individuals tend to perceive mirror symmetry with respect to the plane that includes the vertical axis when recognizing the mirror symmetry of an object. In contrast, for the extruded and vase shapes, the coefficients of determination were 0.36 and 0.66, respectively, supporting the validity of the proposed index. Nonetheless, the coefficient of determination decreased slightly for familiar extruded shapes and asymmetric vase shapes. We tested predictions deriving from the "Pleasure-Interest Model of Aesthetic Liking" (PIA Model), whereby aesthetic preferences arise from two fluency-based processes: an initial automatic, percept-driven default process and a subsequent perceiver-driven reflective process. One key trigger for reflective processing is stimulus complexity. Moreover, if meaning can be derived from such complexity, then this can engender increased interest and elevated liking. Experiment 1 involved graffiti street-art images, pre-normed to elicit low, moderate and high levels of interest. Subjective reports indicated a predicted enhancement in liking across increasing interest levels. Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings during image viewing revealed different patterns of alpha power in temporal brain regions across interest levels. Experiment 2 enforced a brief initial image-viewing stage and a subsequent reflective image-viewing stage. Differences in alpha power arose in most EEG channels between the initial and deliberative viewing stages. A linear increase in aesthetic liking was again seen across interest levels, with different patterns of alpha activity in temporal and occipital regions across these levels. Overall, the phenomenological data support the PIA Model, while the physiological data suggest that enhanced aesthetic liking might be associated with "flow-feelings" indexed by alpha activity in brain regions linked to visual attention and reducing distraction. The field of interior home design has witnessed a growing utilization of machine learning. However, the subjective nature of aesthetics poses a significant challenge due to its variability among individuals and cultures. This paper proposes an applied machine learning method to enhance manufactured custom doors in a proper and aesthetic home design environment. Since there are millions of possible custom door models based on door types, wood species, dyeing, paint, and glass types, it is impossible to foresee a home design model fitting every custom door. To generate the classification data, a home design expert has to label thousands of door/home design combinations with the different colors and shades utilized in home designs. These data train a random forest classifier in a supervised learning context. The classifier predicts a home design according to a particular custom door. This method is applied in the following context: A web page displays a choice of doors to a customer. The customer selects the desired door properties, which are sent to a server that returns an aesthetic home design model for this door. This door configuration generates a series of images through the Unity 3D engine module, which are returned to the web client. The customer finally visualizes their door in an aesthetic home design context. The results show the random forest classifier's good performance, with an accuracy level of 86.8%, in predicting suitable home design, marking the way for future developments requiring subjective evaluations. In the field of neuroscience, brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) are used to connect the human brain with external devices, providing insights into the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive processes, including aesthetic perception. Non-invasive BCIs, such as EEG and fNIRS, are critical for studying central nervous system activity and understanding how individuals with cognitive deficits process and respond to aesthetic stimuli. This study assessed twenty participants who were divided into control and impaired aging (AI) groups based on MMSE scores. EEG and fNIRS were used to measure their neurophysiological responses to aesthetic stimuli that varied in pleasantness and dynamism. Significant differences were identified between the groups in P300 amplitude and late positive potential (LPP), with controls showing greater reactivity. AI subjects showed an increase in oxyhemoglobin in response to pleasurable stimuli, suggesting hemodynamic compensation. This study highlights the effectiveness of multimodal BCIs in identifying the neural basis of aesthetic appreciation and impaired aging. Despite its limitations, such as sample size and the subjective nature of aesthetic appreciation, this research lays the groundwork for cognitive rehabilitation tailored to aesthetic perception, improving the comprehension of cognitive disorders through integrated BCI methodologies. In our generation, there is an undoubted rise in the use of social media and specifically photo and video sharing platforms. These sites have proved their ability to yield rich data sets through the users' interaction which can be used to perform a data‐driven evaluation of capabilities. Nevertheless, this study reveals the lack of suitable data sets in photo and video sharing platforms and evaluation processes across them. In this way, our first contribution is the creation of one of the largest labelled data sets in Flickr with the multimodal data which has been open sourced as part of this contribution. It incorporates multimodal data, combining information from various sources such as user profiles, photo metadata, and crowdsourced features. Predicated on these data, we explored machine learning models and concluded that it is feasible to properly predict whether a user is a professional photographer or not based on self‐reported occupation labels and several feature representations out of the user, photo and crowdsourced sets. We also examined the relationship between the aesthetics and technical quality of a picture and the social activity of that picture. Finally, we depicted which characteristics differentiate professional photographers from non‐professionals. As far as we know, the results presented in this work represent an important novelty for identifying expertise in the domain of photography, which researchers from various domains can utilise for related applications. Introduction. Oncologic mastectomy in the setting of obesity poses challenges in achieving a flat closure that includes the lateral adiposity. The angel wing (AW) technique was developed to address this issue. We aim to demonstrate the safety of AW by evaluating incidence of arm lymphedema (AL) and decreased range of motion (dROM) in patients postmastectomy with and without the AW closure. Methods. We performed a single-center retrospective cohort study at an academic referral center of patients who underwent mastectomy with and without the AW technique from May 2014 to October 2022. Those who received breast reconstruction (immediate or delayed), partial mastectomy, and male patients were excluded. The presence of postoperative AL and dROM was evaluated. Subgroup analysis was performed for patient factors including BMI, extent of axillary surgery, PMRT, and pathologic stage. Results. A total of 390 patients met inclusion criteria. Of those, 173 (44.4%) underwent AW and 217 (55.6%) had non-AW mastectomy. Expectedly, the average BMI was significantly higher in the AW cohort (p < 0.0001). The overall rate of AL was 51/390 (13.1%), seen in 27 (15.6%) undergoing AW and 24 (11.1%) non-AW (p value = 0.18). While the rate of dROM within the cohort was 52/390 (13.1%), 27 (15.6%) underwent AW vs. 24 (11.1%) non-AW (p value = 0.22), resulting in no statistical significance between AW and non-AW mastectomy upon subsequent development of AL or dROM. Conclusion. Our study demonstrates the AW technique does not convey an increased risk of overall AL or dROM, even when considering known risk factors such as obesity, PMRT, and extent of axillary surgery. As we strive to provide our patients with improved surgical techniques for oncologic resection, we submit that this technique is a viable and safe option for achieving the goals of cosmesis with oncologic safety. The Ming Great Wall Military Defense System is the most complete ancient military cultural heritage in China, which is of great significance to the study of China's ancient military defense mechanism and pattern. Military settlement is an important carrier of this mechanism. The estimation and in-depth understanding of its value can further excavate the profound connotation of the military defense system and the Great Wall spatial pattern in the Ming Dynasty. This paper adopts the AHP-CRITIC weighting approach to determine the weights of the historical value, scientific value, social value, cultural value and artistic value of the settlement heritage, so as to construct the value evaluation model of military settlements, and takes 34 Ming Great Wall military settlements in the Liaoxi Corridor as an example for evaluation. The results of the evaluation identified the priority settlements for conservation and development, and also explored their relationship with historical status, urbanization processes and official policies. The evaluation model constructed in this paper has a certain universality, and can also be followed in the evaluation of other military settlements in the Ming Great Wall Defense System, so as to obtain the overall cognition of the settlement system. Human needs, and their fulfillment, are the building blocks of human development, personality, and well-being. However, no published paper in the field of psychology has focused on exploring aesthetic needs. Maslow (1986) gave the topic little more than a paragraph; and Dweck [1], in her elegant Unified Theory of Motivation, Personality, and Development, never mentions aesthetic needs. The aim of this article is to describe developing a scale for measuring the intensity of aesthetic needs. The structure, psychometric properties, and criterion-related validity of the scale were verified with three independent samples (total N = 592). The results of an EFA and two CFAs indicated a three-factor structure: 1) the need to aestheticize everyday life (aesthetic experiences of everyday objects and events unrelated to art, such as the presentation of food or the appearance of a workspace, etc.); 2) the need for contact with aesthetic creations (the arts); 3) the need to aestheticize the built and natural environments (urban spaces, architecture, parks, wild nature, etc.). In addition, our criterion-related convergent validity studies have shown that people with high aesthetic needs are characterized by experiencing more intense experiences in contact with works of art, have higher aesthetic competence in art, are more intensely involved in four forms of beauty, have a higher ability to integrate beauty, a stronger trait gratitude, curiosity about nature, greater sensitivity to disgust, and the need for internal and external stimulation. Background: This study aimed to systematically review and summarize the available controlled clinical trials on the effectiveness of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) in terms of aesthetic outcomes, skin-aging-related outcomes, and patient/investigator satisfaction. Methods: We included controlled clinical trials involving at least 10 human adults that examined the effects of CaHA on aesthetic and skin-aging-related outcomes and satisfaction. Due to the high heterogeneity among the included studies, only a qualitative analysis is provided. Results: Out of 2935 relevant references, 13 studies were included, of which 8 studies focused on facial areas and 5 on dorsum of hand. CaHA injection was associated with enhancements in global aesthetic improvement scale, whether applied in facial regions or on the dorsum of hands. The findings suggested high patients' satisfaction following CaHA when applied to facial areas. Studies highlighted improvements in hand grading scales and a reduction in facial wrinkles. Conclusions: Current evidence suggests that CaHA injections improve aesthetic results, including facial areas, such as nasolabial folds and jawline, and hands, with high levels of satisfaction. Considering the methodological limitations and heterogeneous comparisons groups, additional controlled clinical trials would contribute to a better understanding of the applications and advantages offered by CaHA. Study on export paintings has gradually shifted from artistic form to cultural connotation, with an emphasis on cross-cultural communication. Although the economic and social dimensions of their artistic value have been explored, few studies delve into the connection between Qing-era Guangzhou's trade culture and its color characteristics. Utilizing the HSV color model and the k-means algorithm, this study analyzes the color traits of 35 export paintings depicting Guangzhou landscapes and works from the "Thirteen-houses commercial zone," revealing Qing-era Guangzhou's urban impressions and Sino-Western artistic interactions. Key findings include: (1) the hue pixel range in Guangzhou export paintings primarily spans 10°–60° and 120°–250° (dominated by red and yellow-green), saturation values range from 1–82% (primarily low saturation), and value values range from 11–94% (with a wide variance); (2) compared to traditional Chinese paintings, the transformation from pure color (正色) → inter-color (间色) → projection-perspective and light source illustrates both the blending of Eastern and Western artistic cultures and a diminishing influence of traditional ceremonial culture; (3) in contrast with Western artworks, some Guangzhou export paintings display a Westernization trend in color structures, evident in vibrant colors and stark chiaroscuro contrasts. As bespoke art commodities, export paintings microscopically reflect Guangzhou's unique trade culture and socio-political dynamics. The shifts in color schemes, integration of realistic styles, and human-centric characteristics unveil the intricate interplay between quasi-realism and transcendental aesthetics in Qing-era Guangzhou, as well as the nuanced dynamics between social capital and art within a global trade network. Simple Summary: The reduviid genus Sycanus Amyot & Serville, 1843, possesses higher aesthetic value and plays a crucial role as a natural enemy in the control of agricultural and forestry pests. However, Sycanus from China has not undergone a comprehensive review for over four decades. Based on both molecular data and morphological evidence, we conducted a systematic review of the 14 Chinese Sycanus species, including a description of three new species. Due to the variability of body coloration and morphological similarity among closely related species, unresolved issues and debates still persist in the taxonomic study of the genus Sycanus from China. In this study, we conducted phylogenetic analyses and species delimitation for Sycanus in China based on a COI DNA barcoding dataset comprising 81 samples. The results revealed that all the samples could be classified into 12 species by integrating molecular analyses with morphological comparison. This paper provides a comprehensive systematic review of the Sycanus species found in China, including descriptions of three new species: S. taiwanensis Zhao & Cai sp. nov., S. flavicorius Li & Cai sp. nov., and S. hainanensis Wang & Cai sp. nov. Furthermore, it is proposed that S. croceovittatus Dohrn, 1859, S. leucomesus Walker, 1873, and S. villicus Stål, 1863, are three synonyms of S. bifidus (Fabricius, 1787); S. bicolor Hsiao, 1979, is a synonym of S. versicolor Dohrn, 1859; and S. hsiaoi Maldonado-Capriles, 1990, is a synonym of S. marginellus Putshkov, 1987. Introduction: Anterior composite restorations present many aesthetic challenges for clinicians. Direct veneers provide chairside advantages such as evaluating tooth anatomy, shade selection, and correcting tooth morphology according to the patient's desire. In today's world, the use of digitalisation and 3D-printed models has grown. However, limitations of these are unknown and a research gap exists, with surface roughness being a major issue. Aim: To evaluate the surface roughness of clear silicon templates fabricated over 3D-printed models, blue inlay wax and dental stone. Materials and Methods: This in-vitro study utilised both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The study was conducted at the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Manubhai Patel Dental College and Hospital, Vadodara, Gujarat, India. The study was completed over three months. A total of 36 surfaces of clear silicone template (Exaclear) were obtained from two blocks each of 3D-printed model, blue inlay wax, and dental stone, measuring 30Ã--10Ã--10 mm. These blocks were divided into six units of 10Ã--5 mm (N=36) and were divided into three groups: 1) 3D-printed model; 2) Blue inlay wax; 3) Dental stone. Surface roughness was evaluated using a surface roughness tester and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Quantitative analysis of surface roughness was done using the surface roughness tester, and qualitative analysis was done using SEM. Statistical analysis was done using the posthoc Tukey Honest Significant Difference (HSD) test and statistical software SPSS Version 20.0. Results: The quantitative analysis showed the highest Roughness average (Ra) value mean±Standard Deviation (SD) for Group 1 (11.97±4.43 μm), followed by Group 3 (2.42±1.07 μm) and Group 2 (0.63±0.86 μm). SEM showed the presence of voids only in Group 1. Conclusion: Surface roughness of clear silicon template fabricated on wax surface is less as compared to templates fabricated on 3-D printed models. Introduction: Crown lengthening is a reliable procedure that enables the restoration of teeth with a short clinical crown, extensive subgingival caries, and correction of excessive gingival display for aesthetic purposes. Blue laser, a recent technology in dentistry, has shown significant effectiveness at low power settings, promoting favourable wound healing effects. Aim: To compare the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores and wound healing outcomes between blue laser and denlase in performing crown lengthening procedures. Materials and Methods: A randomised clinical trial was conducted in the Department of Periodontics and Implantology, Vishnu Dental College, Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh, India, involving 14 patients who were divided into two groups. Participants were recruited from September 2021 to April 2022. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Institutional Ethics and Review Board. Group-A underwent crown lengthening using blue laser (445 nm), while Group-B received treatment with denlase (980 nm). VAS scores and the wound healing index were recorded and compared between the two groups at baseline, 10 days, and one month after the surgery. Statistical tests such as the Mann-Whitney U test, unpaired t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA were used for analysis. Results: The study revealed a statistically significant difference (p-value=0.006) in VAS scores between the blue laser group (mean value of 0.5) and the denlase group (mean value of 1.3). However, statistically significant differences in Wachtel's early wound healing index were not observed in either of the groups. Conclusion: Blue laser treatment was found to be more comfortable for patients, as indicated by the lower VAS scores. Both groups demonstrated good wound healing properties based on Wachtel's early wound healing index, with no significant difference between them. Background: With the increasing use of dermal injectable fillers in aesthetic medicine, the popularity of non‐surgical filler‐based rhinoplasty (NSR) is also growing. While performing this procedure might result in certain vascular complications, injecting deep into the midline of the nose is commonly considered the safest method for blind primary NSR. Aims: In this study, we challenged the common NSR method with a Doppler ultrasound study of the nose. Patients/Methods: The vascular pattern of the common zones of the NSR procedure (radix and nasal tip) of 21 Iranian women were investigated by using a 14 MHz Doppler handheld ultrasound device (Silarious L14PS). Participants had never undergone any procedure on their nose. We focused on the depth of midline vessels in the radix and nasal tip. The radix was studied sagittally and horizontally, and the nasal tip was examined axially by ultrasound. Results: In the radix of eight cases (38%), at least one vessel was observed at midline, and all were superficial. In the nose tip of 18 cases (86%), at least one vessel was observed at midline, and 9 out of these 18 vessels (50%) were deep. As a result, conducting NSR by the common method in our study population was relatively safe in the radix, but there was an increased likelihood of vascular events in the tip. Conclusion: Our research results show that while the common method of the NSR may carry a high risk of vascular events, the safety of this procedure could be enhanced by using ultrasound for planning and conducting a tailored treatment. The interior design suffers from inefficiency and a lack of aesthetic appeal. With the development of artificial intelligence diffusion models, using text descriptions to generate aesthetically pleasing designs has emerged as a new approach to address these issues. In this study, we propose a novel method based on the aesthetic diffusion model, which can quickly generate visually appealing interior design based on input text descriptions while allowing for the specification of decorative styles and spatial functions. The method proposed in this study creates creative designs and drawings by computer instead of from designers, thus improving the design efficiency and aesthetic appeal. We demonstrate the potential of this approach in the field of interior design through our research. The results indicate that: (1) The method efficiently provides designers with aesthetically pleasing interior design solutions; (2) By modifying the text descriptions, the method allows for the rapid regeneration of design solutions; (3) Designers can apply this highly flexible method to other design fields through fine-tuning. Background. Several minimal access approaches to the thyroid gland have been widely applied; nevertheless, such approaches are still challenging when dealing with large-sized thyroid nodules or goiters. We hereby evaluated the outcomes and highlighted the merits of endoscopic axillo-breast hemithyroidectomy (EABH) for large-sized unilateral goiters. Methods. Patients underwent EABH for unilateral large thyroid nodules ≥6 cm in its greatest dimension or unilateral large goiter (≥60 ml sonographic volume) whatever the size of its contained nodules were identified from a prospectively maintained database. Their demographic data, clinicopathological profiles, and surgical and esthetic outcomes are reported and analyzed. Results. Over a 2-year period, 33 patients matched the selection criteria. Their mean age was 34.75 ± 11.39 years. There were 30 women and 3 men. The majority of nodules were radiologically TIRADS3 and cytologically Bethesda 3. The mean sonographic dominant nodule greatest dimension was 5.29 ± 1.48 cm (range: 3–9.5 cm). The mean sonographic volume of the pathological lobe was 101.86 ± 54.45 ml (range: 60.11–236.88 ml). All cases were completed endoscopically with no conversion to open. The mean operative time was 110.76 ± 18.75 minutes. No significant postoperative complications were reported except for one case with temporary vocal cord paresis. Most (87.9%) of the patients were extremely satisfied with the procedure. Conclusion. This article addresses some critical aspects of the relationship between aesthetic medicine (AM) and ethics and proposes a possible deontological ethical line to pursue based on current practices. The role of AM has always been controversial and suffers from unclear practical and moral boundaries, even within academic settings, since it aims to improve the appearance of individuals, not to cure a disease. Today, it is essential and pertinent to discuss these issues, as AM specialists are dealing with a growing and increasingly demanding patient population that has undergone profound evolution in recent years. Current challenges within the field of AM include a lack of global uniformity concerning the education of AM specialists, an increasing number of physicians practicing AM with diverse training backgrounds, the spread of AM being practiced outside of medical practice or hospital settings, and the influence of social media where the success is modelled and dictated by the identification of a youthful appearance). By the field of action enriched by technologies that aim not only at enhancement per se but also at the preservation and regeneration of tissues, it is necessary to establish an active multidisciplinary discussion on the definition of shared ethical limits. This discussion would allow AM to fully reclaim its identity as a specialty that aims to improve patient well-being whilst maintaining respect for patient aesthetic harmony, the expertise of specialists who practice AM, the essential role of safety, and awareness of the importance of a confidential doctor−patient relationship. Tourist maps provide tourists with destination information that reflects their unique characteristics and cultural connotations and play an important role in attracting tourists and serving marketing purposes. However, existing designs of tourist maps often ignore the importance of cultural resource selection and the relationship between maps and structural linguistics, thereby affecting the narrative function and representativeness of tourist maps. This study utilizes the local chronicle as a data source and proposes a novel visual narrative framework (VNF) for tourist maps. The VNF combines Todorov's narrative hierarchy and Roth's visual storytelling tropes to establish a mapping between map elements and narrative elements. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the VNF, the Songshan Scenic Area was selected as a case study. By applying the VNF, highly characteristic and meaningful colors, figurative hand-painted symbols, and scene symbols are selected and integrated into the map design to enhance the artistic value and narrative of the map. This framework reveals the potential cultural value of local chronicles and can serve as a reference for other historical tourist cities, contributing to the preservation of local cultural heritage. Prevailing studies on romantic relationships often emphasize facial symmetry as a factor in partner selection and marital satisfaction. This study aims to explore the inverse of this hypothesis—the relationship between facial dissimilarity and partnership duration among celebrity couples. Utilizing the CELEB-A dataset, which includes 202,599 images of 10,177 celebrities, we conducted an in-depth analysis using advanced artificial intelligence-based techniques. Deep learning and machine learning methods were employed to process and evaluate facial images, focusing on dissimilarity across various facial regions. Our sample comprised 1822 celebrity couples. The predictive analysis, incorporating models like Linear Regression, Ridge Regression, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, and a Neural Network, revealed varying degrees of effectiveness in estimating partnership duration based on facial features and partnership status. However, the most notable performance was observed in Ridge Regression (Mean R2 = 0.0623 for whole face), indicating a moderate predictive capability. The study found no significant correlation between facial dissimilarity and partnership duration. These findings emphasize the complexity of predicting relationship outcomes based solely on facial attributes and suggest that other nuanced factors might play a more critical role in determining relationship dynamics. This paper considers recent experiments in art and artificial intelligence that crystallize around training algorithms to generate artworks based on datasets derived from the Western art historical canon. Over the last decade, a shift towards the rejection of canonicity has begun to take shape in art historical discourse. At the same time, algorithmically enabled practices in the US and Europe have emerged that entrench the Western canon as a locus and guarantor of aesthetic value. Operating within the epistemic framework of a "view from nowhere," this tendency in generative art inherits the coloniality of both art history and artificial intelligence. Producing "art histories from nowhere," this tendency conflates the conceptual category of visual art with the histories of Western cultural production. It reproduces a set of aesthetic values that entrench the mythology of the artist-genius and his imputed whiteness and masculinity; the extolment of innovation and novelty as self-evident virtues; disembodied Cartesian models of knowing and sensing; and the erasure of contributions that have been occluded from canonical visibility. As we encounter systems trained on particular visions of art history and of the artist, how might we remain attentive to the specific lens through which they are taught to see? This essay addresses that question by bringing the coloniality of recent experiments into view, bridging data feminisms and decolonial studies to formulate alternative visions of encounters between art and AI. Much more than their machinic reality, current iterations of AI rely on imagined divisions of human and non-human properties and skills that have genealogical ties to colonization. For this reason, research efforts have recently been made to historicize these imaginaries, connecting them to colonial ideals that delegate black and brown colonized people into the realm of the non-human. Atanasoski and Vora (Surrogate humanity. Race, robots and the politics of technological futures, Duke, Durham and London, 2019) have called this a "surrogate humanity", where narratives of autonomous technologies function to disappear precisely the formerly colonized peoples that are enveloped in its production process. At the same time, the gendered and racialized roots of this maternal figure represents an opportunity to uncover and critique the invisibilization of embodied resources necessary to produce AI, precarious bodies labouring to produce algorithmic infrastructures in a manner that can be considered in a genealogy of carework and reproduction. These genealogies complicate the detachment suggested by the surrogate figure and go beyond it to proclaim a more generative function of the relationship between the black maternal figure and AI. The article analyses Tabita Rezaire's multi-media artwork Sugar Walls Teardom to think through decolonial and queer renderings of the black female bodies upon which technological imaginaries rest, to extend beyond AI surrogacy and towards notions of kinship, care and world-making by producing an AI aesthetics that is relational, embodied, and celebratory of other ways of liveness. The peculiar physicochemical features of deep eutectic solvents (DESs), in particular their tunability, make them ideal media for various applications. Despite their ability to solubilize metal oxides, their use as rust removers from valuable substrates has not yet been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we chose three known DESs, consisting of choline chloride and acetic, oxalic or citric acid for evaluating their ability to remove corrosion products from a cellulose-based material as linen fabric and two different lithotypes, as travertine and granite. The artificial staining was achieved by placing a rusty iron grid on their surfaces. The DESs were applied by means of cellulose poultice on the linen fabrics, while on the rusted stone surfaces with a cotton swab. Macro- and microscopic observations, colorimetry and SEM/EDS analysis were employed to ascertain the cleaning effectiveness and the absence of side effects on the samples after treatment. Oxalic acid-based DES was capable of removing rust stains from both stone and cellulose-based samples, while choline chloride/citric acid DES was effective only on stone specimens. The results suggest a new practical application of DESs for the elimination of rust from lithic and cellulosic substrates of precious and artistic value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The reconstruction of medium-sized soft tissue defects of the fingertip remains a challenge for hand surgeons. The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of modified triangular neurovascular unilateral advancement flap and digital artery dorsal perforator flap in the treatment of this injury. Methods: From May 2018 to May 2022, 70 patients with medium-sized volar soft tissue defects were enrolled. The patients were divided into two groups based on the flap type: modified triangular neurovascular unilateral advancement flap (Group A) and digital artery dorsal perforator flap (Group B). The debridement times, defect size, operation time, and flap survival rate were recorded. At follow-up, hand function, aesthetics, and complications were evaluated. Function was evaluated using the TAM score. The aesthetics of the reconstructed and donor sites were assessed using the vancouver scar scale (VSS). The static two-point discrimination of the finger pulp served as a measure of tactile agnosia. Results: A total of 10 patients were lost to follow-up for various reasons, resulting in 30 cases remaining in each group. The general information of the two groups showed no significant differences in age, sex, injury side, cause of injury, time from injury to surgery, and operation time (P > 0.05). Additionally, the debridement times and size of the defect were similar between the groups (P > 0.05). However, the operation time was significantly shorter in Group A compared to Group B (P = 0.001). With regard to complications, there was no significant difference between them. At one-month follow-up, TAM scores indicated that Group B performed significantly better than Group A. However, at the final follow-up period, there was no significant difference in TAM scores between the two groups. When considering the VSS, significant differences were observed between the two groups in both the reconstructed site and donor site. Conclusion: Both flaps can effectively repair medium-sized fingertip defects. Furthermore, the modified triangular neurovascular unilateral advancement flap offers anatomical reconstruction possibilities, ensuring satisfactory sensation and cosmetic contour. Background: Depression is a major global health challenge, affecting over 300 million people worldwide. Current pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions have limited efficacy, underscoring the need for novel approaches. Emerging evidence suggests that peak emotional experiences characterized by awe, transcendence, and meaning hold promise for rapidly shifting maladaptive cognitive patterns in depression. Aesthetic chills, a peak positive emotion characterized by physical sensations such as shivers and goosebumps, may influence reward-related neural pathways and hold promise for modifying core maladaptive beliefs rooted in early adverse experiences. Methods: We enrolled 96 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder. A validated database of multimedia known to elicit chills responses (ChillsDB) was used for stimulus presentation. Participants' emotional responses were assessed using the Emotional Breakthrough Inventory (EBI), while shifts in self-schema were measured via the Young Positive Schema Questionnaire (YSPQ). Results: The study found that chill-inducing stimuli have the potential to positively influence the core schema of individuals with depression, impacting areas of self-related beliefs. The associated phenomenology triggered by chills appears to share similarities with the altered states of consciousness induced by psychedelic substances like psilocybin. Conclusions: These preliminary results suggest that the biological processes involved in aesthetic chills could be harnessed as a non-pharmacological intervention for depression. However, further investigation is necessary to comprehensively understand the neurophysiological responses to chills and to evaluate the practicality, effectiveness, and safety of utilizing aesthetic chills as a preventive measure in mental health care.
