Search

AGILE (Astrorivelatore Gamma ad Immagini LEggero) has been a unique and hugely successful mission of Italian Space Agency (ASI), built and operated with the programmatic and technical support of the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), several universities and Italian industries. During almost 17 years of observations in orbit (from April 23, 2007, to January 18, 2024), AGILE contributed to high-energy astrophysics and terrestrial physics with many discoveries and detections. Two co-aligned X- and gamma-ray detectors, a silicon-strip-based tracker, a wide field of view gamma-ray imager and the fast-reaction ground segment were the AGILE innovative solutions with respect to the previous generation of gamma-ray satellites. With the AGILE's re-entry, the in-orbit operational phase ends, but a new phase of scientific work on the satellite legacy data archive opens: AGILE may still hold future surprises., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures. The extraordinary gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A provides a great opportunity to investigate the enigmatic origin and evolution of GRBs. However, the complexity of the observations associated with this GRB provides significant challenges to developing a theoretical modeling in a coherent framework. In this paper, we present a theoretical interpretation of the GRB 221009A afterglow within the relativistic fireball scenario, aiming to describe the broadband dataset with a consistent model evolution. We find that the adiabatic fireball evolution in the slow-cooling regime provides a viable scenario in good agreement with observations. Crucial to our analysis is the set of simultaneous GeV and TeV gamma-ray data obtained by AGILE and LHAASO during the early afterglow phases. Having successfully modeled as inverse Compton emission the high-energy spectral and lightcurve properties of the afterglow up to $10^4$ s, we extend our model to later times when also optical and X-ray data are available. This approach results in a coherent physical framework that successfully describes all observed properties of the afterglow up to very late times, approximately $10^6$ s. Our model requires time-variable microphysical parameters, with a moderately increasing efficiency $\varepsilon_e$ of a few percent for transferring the shock energy to radiating particles and a decreasing efficiency for magnetic field generation $\varepsilon_B$ in the range $10^{-5}$-$10^{-7}$. Fitting the detailed multifrequency spectral data across the afterglow provides a unique test of our model., Comment: Published in ApJL

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are energetic, millisecond-duration radio pulses observed at extragalactic distances and whose origins are still a subject of heated debate. A fraction of the FRB population have shown repeating bursts, however it's still unclear whether these represent a distinct class of sources. We investigated the bursting behaviour of FRB 20220912A, one of the most active repeating FRBs known thus far. In particular, we focused on its burst energy distribution, linked to the source energetics, and its emission spectrum, with the latter directly related to the underlying emission mechanism. We monitored FRB 20220912A at $408$ MHz with the Northern Cross radio telescope and at $1.4$ GHz using the $32$-m Medicina Grueff radio telescope. Additionally, we conducted $1.2$ GHz observations taken with the upgraded Giant Meter Wave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) searching for a persistent radio source coincident with FRB 20220912A, which included high energy observations in the $0.3-10$ keV, $0.4-100$ MeV and $0.03-30$ GeV energy range. We report $16$ new bursts from FRB 20220912A at $408$ MHz during the period between October 16$^{\rm th}$ 2022 and December 31$^{\rm st}$ 2023. Their cumulative spectral energy distribution follows a power law with slope $\alpha_E = -1.3 \pm 0.2$ and we measured a repetition rate of $0.19 \pm 0.03$ hr$^{-1}$ for bursts having a fluence of $\mathcal{F} \geq 17$ Jy ms. Furthermore, we report no detections at 1.4 GHz for $\mathcal{F} \geq 20$ Jy ms. These non-detections imply an upper limit of $\beta < -2.3$, with $\beta$ being the $408$ MHz $-$ $1.4$ GHz spectral index of FRB 20220912A. This is inconsistent with positive $\beta$ values found for the only two known cases in which an FRB has been detected in separate spectral bands. Quantum computing represents a cutting-edge frontier in artificial intelligence. It makes use of hybrid quantum-classical computation which tries to leverage quantum mechanic principles that allow us to use a different approach to deep learning classification problems. The work presented here falls within the context of the AGILE space mission, launched in 2007 by the Italian Space Agency. We implement different Quantum Convolutional Neural Networks (QCNN) that analyze data acquired by the instruments onboard AGILE to detect Gamma-Ray Bursts from sky maps or light curves. We use several frameworks such as TensorFlow-Quantum, Qiskit and PennyLane to simulate a quantum computer. AGILE is an Italian Space Agency (ASI) space mission launched in 2007 to study X-ray and gamma-ray phenomena in the energy range from $\sim$20 keV to $\sim$10 GeV. The AGILE AntiCoincidence System (ACS) detects hard-X photons in the 50 - 200 keV energy range and continuously stores each panel's count rates in the telemetry. We developed a new Deep Learning (DL) model to predict the background of the AGILE ACS top panel using the satellite's orbital and attitude parameters. This model aims to learn how the orbital and spinning modulations of the satellite impact the background level of the ACS top panel. The DL model executes a regression problem, and is trained with a supervised learning technique on a dataset larger than twenty million orbital parameters' configurations. Using a test dataset, we evaluated the trained model by comparison of the predicted count rates with the real ones. The results show that the model can reconstruct the background count rates of the ACS top panel with an accuracy of 96.7\%, considering the orbital modulation and spinning of the satellite. PKS 1830$-$211 is a $\gamma$-ray emitting, high-redshift (z $= 2.507 \pm 0.002$), lensed flat-spectrum radio quasar. During the period mid-February to mid-April 2019, this source underwent a series of strong $\gamma$-ray flares that were detected by both AGILE-GRID and Fermi-LAT, reaching a maximum $\gamma$-ray flux of $F_{\rm E>100 MeV}\approx 2.3\times10^{-5}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Here we report on a coordinated campaign from both on-ground (Medicina, OVRO, REM, SRT) and orbiting facilities (AGILE, Fermi, INTEGRAL, NuSTAR, Swift, Chandra), with the aim of investigating the multi-wavelength properties of PKS 1830$-$211 through nearly simultaneous observations presented here for the first time. We find a possible break in the radio spectra in different epochs above 15 GHz, and a clear maximum of the 15 GHz data approximately 110 days after the $\gamma$-ray main activity periods. The spectral energy distribution shows a very pronounced Compton dominance (> 200) which challenges the canonical one-component emission model. Therefore we propose that the cooled electrons of the first component are re-accelerated to a second component by, e.g., kink or tearing instability during the $\gamma$-ray flaring periods. We also note that PKS 1830$-$211 could be a promising candidate for future observations with both Compton satellites (e.g., e-ASTROGAM) and Cherenkov arrays (CTAO) which will help, thanks to their improved sensitivity, in extending the data availability in energy bands currently uncovered., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 16 pages, 18 figures, 12 tables

Gamma-ray emission in the MeV-GeV range from explosive cosmic events is of invaluable relevance to understanding physical processes related to the formation of neutron stars and black holes. Here we report on the detection by the AGILE satellite in the MeV-GeV energy range of the remarkable long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A. The AGILE onboard detectors have good exposure to GRB 221009A during its initial crucial phases. Hard X-ray/MeV emission in the prompt phase lasted hundreds of seconds, with the brightest radiation being emitted between 200 and 300 seconds after the initial trigger. Very intense GeV gamma-ray emission is detected by AGILE in the prompt and early afterglow phase up to 10,000 seconds. Time-resolved spectral analysis shows time-variable MeV-peaked emission simultaneous with intense power-law GeV radiation that persists in the afterglow phase. The coexistence during the prompt phase of very intense MeV emission together with highly nonthermal and hardening GeV radiation is a remarkable feature of GRB 221009A. During the prompt phase, the event shows spectrally different MeV and GeV emissions that are most likely generated by physical mechanisms occurring in different locations. Aims. Fast Radio Bursts are bright radio transients whose origin has not yet explained. The search for a multi-wavelength counterpart of those events can put a tight constrain on the emission mechanism and the progenitor source. Methods. We conducted a multi-wavelength observational campaign on FRB 20180916B between October 2020 and August 2021 during eight activity cycles of the source. Observations were led in the radio band by the SRT both at 336 MHz and 1547 MHz and the uGMRT at 400 MHz. Simultaneous observations have been conducted by the optical telescopes Asiago (Galileo and Copernico), CMO SAI MSU, CAHA 2.2m, RTT-150 and TNG, and X/Gamma-ray detectors on board the AGILE, Insight-HXMT, INTEGRAL and Swift satellites. Results. We present the detection of 14 new bursts detected with the SRT at 336 MHz and seven new bursts with the uGMRT from this source. We provide the deepest prompt upper limits in the optical band fro FRB 20180916B to date. In fact, the TNG/SiFAP2 observation simultaneous to a burst detection by uGMRT gives an upper limit E_optical / E_radio < 1.3 x 10^2. Another burst detected by the SRT at 336 MHz was also co-observed by Insight-HMXT. The non-detection in the X-rays yields an upper limit (1-30 keV band) of E_X-ray / E_radio in the range of (0.9-1.3) x 10^7, depending on which model is considered for the X-ray emission., Comment: A&A accepted

We report the Astrorivelatore Gamma ad Immagini LEggero (AGILE) observations of solar flares, detected by the on board anticoincidence system in the 80-200 keV energy range, from 2007 May 1st to 2022 August 31st. In more than 15 yr, AGILE detected 5003 X-ray, minute-lasting transients, compatible with a solar origin. A cross-correlation of these transients with the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) official solar flare database allowed to associate an intensity class (i.e., B, C, M, or X) to 3572 of them, for which we investigated the main temporal and intensity parameters. The AGILE data clearly revealed the solar activity covering the last stages of the 23rd cycle, the whole 24th cycle, and the beginning of the current 25th cycle. In order to compare our results with other space missions operating in the high-energy range, we also analyzed the public lists of solar flares reported by RHESSI and Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor. This catalog reports 1424 events not contained in the GOES official dataset, which, after statistical comparisons, are compatible with low-intensity, short-duration solar flares. Besides providing a further dataset of solar flares detected in the hard X-ray range, this study allowed to point out two main features: a longer persistence of the decay phase in the high-energy regime, with respect to the soft X-rays, and a tendency of the flare maximum to be reached earlier in the soft X-rays with respect to the hard X-rays. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond radio transients observed at cosmological distances. The nature of their progenitors is still a matter of debate, although magnetars are invoked by most models. The proposed FRB-magnetar connection was strengthened by the discovery of an FRB-like event from the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154. In this work, we aim to investigate how prevalent magnetars such as SGR J1935+2154 are within FRB progenitors. We carried out an FRB search in a sample of seven nearby (< 12 Mpc) galaxies with the Northern Cross radio telescope for a total of 692 h. We detected one 1.8 ms burst in the direction of M101 with a fluence of $58 \pm 5$ Jy ms. Its dispersion measure of 303 pc cm$^{-3}$ places it most-likely beyond M101. Considering that no significant detection comes indisputably from the selected galaxies, we place a 38 yr$^{-1}$ upper limit on the total burst rate (i.e. including the whole sample) at the 95\% confidence level. This upper limit constrains the event rate per magnetar $\lambda_{\rm mag} < 0.42$ magnetar$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ or, if combined with literature observations of a similar sample of nearby galaxies, it yields a joint constraint of $\lambda_{\rm mag} < 0.25$ magnetar$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$. We also provide the first constraints on the expected rate of FRBs hypothetically originating from ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) sources, since some of the galaxies observed during our observational campaign host confirmed ULXs. We obtain $< 13$ yr$^{-1}$ per ULX for the total sample of galaxies observed. Our results indicate that bursts with energies $E>10^{34}$ erg from magnetars like SGR J1935+2154 appear more rarely compared to previous observations and further disfavour them as unique progenitors for the cosmological FRB population, leaving more space open to the contribution from a population of more exotic magnetars, not born via core-collapsed supernovae., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, published in A&A

In the multi-messenger era, coordinating observations between astronomical facilities is mandatory to study transient phenomena (e.g. Gamma-ray bursts) and is achieved by sharing information with the scientific community through networks such as the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network. The facilities usually develop real-time scientific analysis pipelines to detect transient events, alert the astrophysical community, and speed up the reaction time of science alerts received from other observatories. We present in this work the RTApipe framework, designed to facilitate the development of real-time scientific analysis pipelines for present and future gamma-ray observatories. This framework provides pipeline architecture and automatisms, allowing the researchers to focus on the scientific aspects and integrate existing science tools developed with different technologies. The pipelines automatically execute all the configured analyses during the data acquisition. This framework can be interfaced with science alerts networks to perform follow-up analysis of transient events shared by other facilities. The analyses are performed in parallel and can be prioritised. The workload is highly scalable on a cluster of machines. The framework provides the required services using containerisation technology for easy deployment. We present the RTA pipelines developed for the AGILE space mission and the prototype of the SAG system for the ground-based future Cherenkov Telescope Array observatory confirming that the RTApipe framework can be used to successfully develop pipelines for the gamma-ray observatories, both space and ground-based., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. The production site of gamma rays in blazars is closely related to their interaction with the photon fields surrounding the active galactic nucleus. In this work we discuss an indirect method that may help to unveil the presence of ambient structures in BL Lacs through the analysis of their gamma-ray spectrum. Passing through structures at different distances from the black hole, gamma rays interact with the corresponding photon fields via gamma-gamma pair production, producing absorption features in their spectral energy distribution. An interaction of the gamma-ray photons with a putative broad-line region may reduce the gamma-ray flux only if its production site were very close to the central engine. On the other hand, if jet photons interact with optical-UV seed photons produced by a pc-scale narrow-line region, the consequent gamma-gamma process may cause absorption features at a few hundreds GeV. Sources with spectra reaching TeV energies, such as HBLs and EHBLs (extreme blazars), may represent exceptional probes to investigate this topic. In this regard, we discuss recent observations of sources which may show evidence of such absorption features in their gamma-ray spectra. AGILE is an ASI space mission launched in 2007 to study X-ray and gamma-ray phenomena in the energy range from $\sim20$ keV to $\sim10$ GeV. The AGILE Team developed a real-time analysis pipeline for the fast detection of transient sources, and the follow-up of external science alerts received through networks such as the General Coordinates Network. We developed a new Deep Learning method for detecting and localizing Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) in the AGILE/GRID sky maps. We trained the model using sky maps with GRBs simulated in a radius of 20 degrees from the center of the map, which is larger than 99.5 \% of the error region present in the GRBWeb catalog. We also plan to apply this method to search for counterparts of gravitational wave events, which typically have a wider localization error region. The method comprises two Deep Learning models implemented with two Convolutional Neural Networks. The first model detects and filters sky maps containing a GRB, while the second model localizes its position. We trained and tested the models using simulated data. The detection model achieves an accuracy of 95.7 \%, and the localization model has a mean error lower than 0.8 degrees. We configured a Docker container with all the required software for data simulation and deployed it using the Amazon Web Service to calculate the p-value distribution under different conditions. AGILE is a space mission launched in 2007 to study X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy. The AGILE team developed real-time analysis pipelines to detect transient phenomena such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and to react to external science alerts received by other facilities. The AGILE anti-coincidence system (ACS) comprises five panels (four lateral and one on the top) that surround the AGILE detectors to reject background charged particles. It can also detect hard X-ray photons in the energy range 50 - 200 KeV. The acquisition of the ACS data produces a time series for each panel. These time series can be merged in a single multivariate time series (MTS). We present in this work a new Deep Learning model for GRBs detection in the MTSs, generated by the ACS, using an anomaly detection technique. The model is implemented with a Deep Convolutional Neural Network autoencoder architecture. We trained the model with an unsupervised learning algorithm using a dataset of MTSs randomly extracted from the AGILE ACS data. The reconstruction error of the autoencoder is used as the anomaly score to classify the MTS. If the anomaly score is higher than a predefined threshold, the MTS is flagged as a GRB. The trained model is evaluated using a list of MTSs containing GRBs. AGILE is a space mission launched in 2007 devoted to high-energy astrophysics. The AGILE Team is involved in the multi-messenger campaigns to send and receive science alerts about transient events in the shortest time possible. For this reason, the AGILE Team developed several real-time analysis pipelines to analyse data and follow-up external science alerts. However, the results obtained by these pipelines are preliminary and must be validated with manual analyses that are the bottleneck of the workflow. To speed up the scientific analysis performed by scientists, the AGILE Team developed the AGILEScience mobile application (for iOS and Android devices) that offers to the AGILE Team a password-protected section used to visualise the results of automated pipelines. We present in this contribution an improved functionality of the AGILEScience application that aims to enable the AGILE Team to execute a full scientific analysis using their mobile devices. When the analysis is completed, the system sends an email to notify the user that can visualise the results (e.g. plots, tables, and HTML pages) through the application. The possibility to perform scientific analysis from a mobile device enables the AGILE researchers to perform fast scientific analyses remotely to validate the preliminary results obtained with the automated pipelines. We report the AGILE observations of GRB 220101A, which took place at the beginning of 1st January 2022 and was recognized as one of the most energetic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever detected since their discovery. The AGILE satellite acquired interesting data concerning the prompt phase of this burst, providing an overall temporal and spectral description of the event in a wide energy range, from tens of keV to tens of MeV. Dividing the prompt emission into three main intervals, we notice an interesting spectral evolution, featuring a notable hardening of the spectrum in the central part of the burst. The average fluxes encountered in the different time intervals are relatively moderate, with respect to those of other remarkable bursts, and the overall fluence exhibits a quite ordinary value among the GRBs detected by MCAL. However, GRB 220101A is the second farthest event detected by AGILE, and the burst with the highest isotropic equivalent energy of the whole MCAL GRB sample, releasing E_iso=2.54x10^54 erg and exhibiting an isotropic luminosity of L_iso=2.34x10^52 erg/s (both in the 400 keV - 10 MeV energy range). We also analyzed the first 10^6 s of the afterglow phase, using the publicly available Swift XRT data, carrying out a theoretical analysis of the afterglow, based on the forward shock model. We notice that GRB 220101A is with high probability surrounded with a wind-like density medium, and that the energy carried by the initial shock shall be a fraction of the total E_iso, presumably near 50%., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables

In this work we report the results of a nineteen-month Fast Radio Burst observational campaign carried out with the North-South arm of the Medicina Northern Cross radio telescope at 408~MHz in which we monitored four repeating sources: FRB20180916B, FRB20181030A, FRB20200120E and FRB20201124A. We present the current state of the instrument and the detection and characterisation of three bursts from FRB20180916B. Given our observing time, our detections are consistent with the event number we expect from the known burst rate ($2.7 \pm 1.9$ above our 10$\sigma$, 38~Jy~ms detection threshold) in the 5.2 day active window of the source, further confirming the source periodicity. We detect no bursts from the other sources. We turn this result into a 95\% confidence level lower limit on the slope of the differential fluence distribution $\alpha$ to be $\alpha > 2.1$ and $\alpha > 2.2$ for FRB20181030A and FRB20200120E respectively. Given the known rate for FRB20201124A, we expect $1.0 \pm 1.1$ bursts from our campaign, consistent with our non-detection., Comment: MNRAS Accepted, 10 pages, 6 figures

We present the catalog of Interplanetary Network (IPN) localizations for 199 short-duration gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) detected by the Konus-Wind (KW) experiment between 2011 January 1 and 2021 August 31, which extends the initial sample of IPN localized KW sGRBs (arXiv:1301.3740) to 495 events. We discuss recent observations of an extreme blazar named 2WHSP J073326.7+515354 (or PGC 2402248), which shows evidence of such an absorption feature in its gamma-ray spectrum and narrow emission lines in the optical spectrum, suggesting the presence of narrow-line regions in its large-scale environment. Finally, we discuss how sub-TeV absorption features in the spectra of BL Lac objects may affect their broadband modeling, and eventually represent a powerful diagnostic tool to constrain the gamma-ray production site and the jet environment., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Recent findings by the LHAASO experiment are opening a new window, that of the PeV sky, to the observation of the electromagnetic spectrum. Several astronomical objects emitting gamma-rays at energies well above 100 TeV have been observed with the LHAASO-KM2 array of scintillators and muon detectors, clearly demonstrating the feasibility of gamma-ray astronomy up to PeV energies. An all-sky gamma-ray detector in the Southern Hemisphere, operating in the GeV-PeV range, could complement LHAASO observations, monitor the Inner Galaxy and the Galactic Center looking for PeVatrons. As shown by LHAASO, a water-Cherenkov based detector is not well suited to measure the energy spectrum up to the PeV range, nor to reach the advisable 100 GeV threshold. The ARGO-YBJ experiment, operated for many years at 4300 m a.s.l. with an energy threshold of about 300 GeV, demonstrated, on the contrary, the capability of a carpet of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) to fully reconstruct showers starting from the GeV range up to about 10 PeV. In this contribution we propose a hybrid detector made of a layer of RPCs on top of a water Cherenkov facility devoted to the detection of muons for the selection of gamma-induced showers by the muon-poor technique. AGILE is one of the satellites currently detecting terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs). In particular, the AGILE Mini-CALorimeter detected more than 2000 events in 8 years activity, by exploiting a unique sub-millisecond timescale trigger logic and high-energy range. A change in the onboard configuration enhanced the trigger capabilities for the detection of these events, overcoming dead time issues and enlarging the detection rate of these events up to $>$50 TGFs/month, allowing to reveal shorter duration flashes. The quasi-equatorial low-inclination ( 2.5$^{\circ}$) orbit of AGILE allows for the detection of repeated TGFs coming from the same storms, at the same orbital passage and throughout successive orbital overpasses, over the same geographic region. All TGFs detected by AGILE are fulfilling a database that can be used for offline analysis and forthcoming studies. The limited number of missions currently detecting these brief terrestrial flashes makes the understanding of this phenomenon very challenging and, in this perspective, the AGILE satellite played and still plays a major role, helping shedding light to many aspects of TGF science

In the multi-messenger era, space and ground-based observatories usually develop real-time analysis (RTA) pipelines to rapidly detect transient events and promptly share information with the scientific community to enable follow-up observations. These pipelines can also react to science alerts shared by other observatories through networks such as the Gamma-Ray Coordinates Network (GCN) and the Astronomer's Telegram (ATels). AGILE is a space mission launched in 2007 to study X-ray and gamma-ray phenomena. This contribution presents the technologies used to develop two types of AGILE pipelines using the RTApipe framework and an overview of the main scientific results. The first type performs automated analyses on new AGILE data to detect transient events and automatically sends AGILE notices to the GCN network. Since May 2019, this pipeline has sent more than 50 automated notices with a few minutes delay since data arrival. The second type of pipeline reacts to multi-messenger external alerts (neutrinos, gravitational waves, GRBs, and other transients) received through the GCN network and performs hundreds of analyses searching for counterparts in all AGILE instruments' data. Terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) are very short bursts of gamma radiation associated to thunderstorm activity and are the manifestation of the highest-energy natural particle acceleration phenomena occurring on Earth. Photon energies up to several tens of megaelectronvolts are expected, but the actual upper limit and high-energy spectral shape are still open questions. Results published in 2011 by the AGILE team proposed a high-energy component in TGF spectra extended up to $\approx$100 MeV, which is difficult to reconcile with the predictions from the Relativistic Runaway Electron Avalanche (RREA) mechanism at the basis of many TGF production models. Here we present a new set of TGFs detected by the AGILE satellite and associated to lightning measurements capable to solve this controversy. Detailed end-to-end Monte Carlo simulations and an improved understanding of the instrument performance under high-flux conditions show that it is possible to explain the observed high-energy counts by a standard RREA spectrum at the source, provided that the TGF is sufficiently bright and short. We investigate the possibility that single high-energy counts may be the signature of a fine-pulsed time structure of TGFs on time scales $\approx$4 {\mu}s, but we find no clear evidence for this. The presented data set and modeling results allow also for explaining the observed TGF distribution in the (Fluence x duration) parameter space and suggest that the AGILE TGF detection rate can almost be doubled. In the multi-messenger era, astronomical projects share information about transients phenomena issuing science alerts to the Scientific Community through different communications networks. This coordination is mandatory to understand the nature of these physical phenomena. For this reason, astrophysical projects rely on real-time analysis software pipelines to identify as soon as possible transients (e.g. GRBs), and to speed up external alerts' reaction time. These pipelines can share and receive the science alerts through the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network. This work presents a framework designed to simplify the development of real-time scientific analysis pipelines. The framework provides the architecture and the required automatisms to develop a real-time analysis pipeline, allowing the researchers to focus more on the scientific aspects. The framework has been successfully used to develop real-time pipelines for the scientific analysis of the AGILE space mission data. It is planned to reuse this framework for the Super-GRAWITA and AFISS projects. The Italian AGILE space mission, with its Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) instrument sensitive in the 30 MeV-50 GeV gamma-ray energy band, has been operating since 2007. Agilepy is an open-source Python package to analyse AGILE/GRID data. The package is built on top of the command-line version of the AGILE Science Tools, developed by the AGILE Team, publicly available and released by ASI/SSDC. The primary purpose of the package is to provide an easy to use high-level interface to analyse AGILE/GRID data by simplifying the configuration of the tasks and ensuring straightforward access to the data. The current features are the generation and display of sky maps and light curves, the access to gamma-ray sources catalogues, the analysis to perform spectral model and position fitting, the wavelet analysis. Agilepy also includes an interface tool providing the time evolution of the AGILE off-axis viewing angle for a chosen sky region. The Flare Advocate team also uses the tool to analyse the data during the daily monitoring of the gamma-ray sky. The follow-up of external science alerts received from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) and Gravitational Waves (GW) detectors is one of the AGILE Team's current major activities. The AGILE team developed an automated real-time analysis pipeline to analyse AGILE Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) data to detect possible counterparts in the energy range 0.1-10 GeV. This work presents a new approach for detecting GRBs using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to classify the AGILE-GRID intensity maps improving the GRBs detection capability over the Li&Ma method, currently used by the AGILE team. The CNN is trained with large simulated datasets of intensity maps. The AGILE complex observing pattern due to the so-called 'spinning mode' is studied to prepare datasets to test and evaluate the CNN. A GRB emission model is defined from the Second Fermi-LAT GRB catalogue and convoluted with the AGILE observing pattern. Different p-value distributions are calculated evaluating with the CNN millions of background-only maps simulated varying the background level. The CNN is then used on real data to analyse the AGILE-GRID data archive, searching for GRB detections using the trigger time and position taken from the Swift-BAT, Fermi-GBM, and Fermi-LAT GRB catalogues. From these catalogues, the CNN detects 21 GRBs with a significance $\geq 3 \sigma$, while the Li&Ma method detects only two GRBs. We report on a systematic search for hard X-ray and gamma-ray emission in coincidence with fast radio bursts (FRBs) observed by the AGILE satellite. We used 13 years of AGILE archival data searching for time coincidences between exposed FRBs and events detectable by the MCAL (0.4-100 MeV) and GRID (50 MeV-30 GeV) detectors at timescales ranging from milliseconds to days/weeks. The current AGILE sky coverage allowed us to extend the search for high-energy emission preceding and following the FRB occurrence. We considered all FRBs sources currently included in catalogues, and identified a sub-sample (15 events) for which a good AGILE exposure either with MCAL or GRID was obtained. In this paper we focus on non-repeating FRBs, compared to a few nearby repeating sources. We did not detect significant MeV or GeV emission from any event. Our hard X-ray upper limits (ULs) in the MeV energy range were obtained for timescales from sub-millisecond to seconds, and in the GeV range from minutes to weeks around event times. We focus on a sub-set of 5 non-repeating and 2 repeating FRB sources whose distances are most likely smaller than that of 180916.J0158+65 (150 Mpc). For these sources, our MeV ULs translate into ULs on the isotropically-emitted energy of about 3x10^46 erg, comparable to that observed in the 2004 giant flare from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1806-20. On average, these nearby FRBs emit radio pulses of energies significantly larger than the recently detected SGR 1935+2154 and are not yet associated with intense MeV flaring., Comment: ApJ, 915, 102

Magnetars are a promising candidate for the origin of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). The detection of an extremely luminous radio burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 on 2020 April 28 added credence to this hypothesis. We report on simultaneous and non-simultaneous observing campaigns using the Arecibo, Effelsberg, LOFAR, MeerKAT, MK2 and Northern Cross radio telescopes and the MeerLICHT optical telescope in the days and months after the April 28 event. We did not detect any significant single radio pulses down to fluence limits between 25 mJy ms and 18 Jy ms. Some observing epochs overlapped with times when X-ray bursts were detected. Radio images made on four days using the MeerKAT telescope revealed no point-like persistent or transient emission at the location of the magnetar. No transient or persistent optical emission was detected over seven days. Using the multi-colour MeerLICHT images combined with relations between DM, NH and reddening we constrain the distance to SGR J1935+2154, to be between 1.5 and 6.5 kpc. The upper limit is consistent with some other distance indicators and suggests that the April 28 burst is closer to two orders of magnitude less energetic than the least energetic FRBs. The lack of single-pulse radio detections shows that the single pulses detected over a range of fluences are either rare, or highly clustered, or both. It may also indicate that the magnetar lies somewhere between being radio-quiet and radio-loud in terms of its ability to produce radio emission efficiently., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. The energy range between about 100 keV and 1 GeV is of interest for a vast class of astrophysical topics. In particular, (1) it is the missing ingredient for understanding extreme processes in the multi-messenger era; (2) it allows localizing cosmic-ray interactions with background material and radiation in the Universe, and spotting the reprocessing of these particles; (3) last but not least, gamma-ray emission lines trace the formation of elements in the Galaxy and beyond. In addition, studying the still largely unexplored MeV domain of astronomy would provide for a rich observatory science, including the study of compact objects, solar- and Earth-science, as well as fundamental physics. The technological development of silicon microstrip detectors makes it possible now to detect MeV photons in space with high efficiency and low background. During the last decade, a concept of detector ("ASTROGAM") has been proposed to fulfil these goals, based on a silicon hodoscope, a 3D position-sensitive calorimeter, and an anticoincidence detector. Spin qubits are considered to be among the most promising candidates for building a quantum processor. GroupIV hole spin qubits have moved into the focus of interest due to the ease of operation and compatibility with Si technology. In addition, Ge offers the option for monolithic superconductor-semiconductor integration. Here we demonstrate a hole spin qubit operating at fields below 10 mT, the critical field of Al, by exploiting the large out-of-plane hole g-factors in planar Ge and by encoding the qubit into the singlet-triplet states of a double quantum dot. We observe electrically controlled g-factor-difference-driven and exchange-driven rotations with tunable frequencies exceeding 100 MHz and dephasing times of 1 $\mu$s which we extend beyond 150 $\mu$s with echo techniques. These results demonstrate that Ge hole singlet-triplet qubits are competing with state-of-the art GaAs and Si singlet-triplet qubits. In addition, their rotation frequencies and coherence are on par with Ge single spin qubits, but they can be operated at much lower fields underlining their potential for on chip integration with superconducting technologies.

The accuracy of Monte Carlo simulations in reproducing the scientific performance of space telescopes (e.g. angular resolution) is mandatory for a correct design of the mission. A brand-new Monte Carlo simulator of the Astrorivelatore Gamma ad Immagini LEggero (AGILE)/Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) space telescope, AGILESim, is built using the customizable Bologna Geant4 Multi-Mission Simulator (BoGEMMS) architecture and the latest Geant4 library to reproduce the instrument performance of the AGILE/GRID instrument. The Monte Carlo simulation output is digitized in the BoGEMMS postprocessing pipeline, according to the instrument electronic read-out logic, then converted into the onboard data handling format, and finally analyzed by the standard mission on-ground reconstruction pipeline, including the Kalman filter, as a real observation in space. In this paper we focus on the scientific validation of AGILESim, performed by reproducing (i) the conversion efficiency of the tracker planes, (ii) the tracker charge readout distribution measured by the on-ground assembly, integration, and verification activity, and (iii) the point-spread function of in-flight observations of the Vela pulsar in the 100 MeV - 1 GeV energy range. We measure an in-flight angular resolution (FWHM) for Vela-like point sources of $2.0^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$ and $0.8^{+0.1}_{-0.1}$ degrees in the 100 - 300 and 300 - 1000 MeV energy bands, respectively. The successful cross-comparison of the simulation results with the AGILE on-ground and in-space performance validates the BoGEMMS framework for its application to future gamma-ray trackers (e.g. e-ASTROGAM and AMEGO).

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) originate from ultra-relativistic jets launched from the collapsing cores of dying massive stars. They are characterised by an initial phase of bright and highly variable radiation in the keV-MeV band that is likely produced within the jet and lasts from milliseconds to minutes, known as the prompt emission. Subsequently, the interaction of the jet with the external medium generates external shock waves, responsible for the afterglow emission, which lasts from days to months, and occurs over a broad energy range, from the radio to the GeV bands. The afterglow emission is generally well explained as synchrotron radiation by electrons accelerated at the external shock. Recently, an intense, long-lasting emission between 0.2 and 1 TeV was observed from the GRB 190114C. Here we present the results of our multi-frequency observational campaign of GRB~190114C, and study the evolution in time of the GRB emission across 17 orders of magnitude in energy, from $5\times10^{-6}$ up to $10^{12}$\,eV. We find that the broadband spectral energy distribution is double-peaked, with the TeV emission constituting a distinct spectral component that has power comparable to the synchrotron component. This component is associated with the afterglow, and is satisfactorily explained by inverse Compton upscattering of synchrotron photons by high-energy electrons. We find that the conditions required to account for the observed TeV component are not atypical, supporting the possibility that inverse Compton emission is commonly produced in GRBs.

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are short (millisecond) radio pulses originating from enigmatic sources at extragalactic distances so far lacking a detection in other energy bands. Magnetized neutron stars (magnetars) have been considered as the sources powering the FRBs, but the connection is controversial because of differing energetics and the lack of radio and X-ray detections with similar characteristics in the two classes. We report here the detection by the AGILE satellite on April 28, 2020 of an X-ray burst in coincidence with the very bright radio burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154. The burst detected by AGILE in the hard X-ray band (18-60 keV) lasts about 0.5 seconds, it is spectrally cutoff above 80 keV, and implies an isotropically emitted energy ~ $10^{40}$ erg. This event is remarkable in many ways: it shows for the first time that a magnetar can produce X-ray bursts in coincidence with FRB-like radio bursts; it also suggests that FRBs associated with magnetars may emit X-ray bursts of both magnetospheric and radio-pulse types that may be discovered in nearby sources. Guided by this detection, we discuss SGR 1935+2154 in the context of FRBs, and especially focus on the class of repeating-FRBs. Based on energetics, magnetars with fields B ~ $10^{15}$ G may power the majority of repeating-FRBs. Nearby repeating-FRBs offer a unique occasion to consolidate the FRB-magnetar connection, and we present new data on the X-ray monitoring of nearby FRBs. We conducted an observational campaign towards one of the most massive and luminous colliding wind binaries in the Galaxy, HD~93129A, close to its periastron passage in 2018. During this time the source was predicted to be in its maximum of high-energy emission. Here we present our data analysis from the X-ray satellites \textit{Chandra} and \textit{NuSTAR} and the $\gamma$-ray satellite \textit{AGILE}. High-energy emission coincident with HD~93129A was detected in the X-ray band up to $\sim$18~keV, whereas in the $\gamma$-ray band only upper limits were obtained. We interpret the derived fluxes using a non-thermal radiative model for the wind-collision region. We establish a conservative upper limit for the fraction of the wind kinetic power that is converted into relativistic electron acceleration, $f_\mathrm{NT,e} < 0.02$. In addition, we set a lower limit for the magnetic field in the wind-collision region as $B_\mathrm{WCR} > 0.3$~G. We also argue a putative interpretation of the emission from which we estimate $f_\mathrm{NT,e} \approx 0.006$ and $B_\mathrm{WCR} \approx 0.5$~G. We conclude that multi-wavelength, dedicated observing campaigns during carefully selected epochs are a powerful tool for characterising the relativistic particle content and magnetic field intensity in colliding wind binaries., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

FRB 180916 is a most intriguing source at 150 Mpc distance capable of producing repeating fast radio bursts with a periodic 16.35 day temporal pattern. We report on the X-ray and $\gamma$-ray observations of FRB 180916 obtained by AGILE and Swift. We focused on the recurrent 5-day time intervals of active radio bursting and present results obtained on Feb. 3 - 8; Feb. 25; Mar. 5 - 10; Mar. 22 - 28, 2020 during a multiwavelength campaign involving high-energy and radio observations. We also searched for temporal coincidences at millisecond timescales between all known radio bursts of FRB 180916 and X-ray and MeV events detectable by AGILE. We do not detect any simultaneous event or any extended X-ray and $\gamma$-ray emission on timescales of hours/days/weeks. Our cumulative X-ray (0.3-10 keV) flux upper limit of $5 \times\,10^{-14} \rm \, erg \, cm^{-2} s^{-1}$ (obtained during 5-day active intervals) translates into an isotropic luminosity upper limit of $L_{X,UL} \sim 1.5 \times\, 10^{41} \rm erg \, s^{-1}$. Observations above 100 MeV over a many-year timescale provide an average luminosity upper limit one order of magnitude larger. These results provide the so-far most stringent limits on high-energy emission from FRB 180916 and constrain the dissipation of magnetic energy from a magnetar-like source of radius $R_m$, internal magnetic field $B_m$ and dissipation timescale $\tau_d$ to satisfy the relation $R_{m,6}^3 B_{m,16}^2 \tau_{d,8}^{-1} \lesssim 1$, where $R_{m,6}$ is $R_m$ in units of $10^6$ cm, $B_{m,16}$ is $B_m$ in units of $10^{16}$ G, and $\tau_{d,8}$ in units of $10^8$ s., Comment: Accepted for publication by the Astrophysical Journal Letters on April 5, 2020

We report on the lowest-frequency detection to date of three bursts from the fast radio burst FRB 180916, observed at 328 MHz with the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT). The SRT observed the periodic repeater FRB 180916 for five days from 2020 February 20 to 24 during a time interval of active radio bursting, and detected the three bursts during the first hour of observations; no more bursts were detected during the remaining ~ 30 hours. Simultaneous SRT observations at 1548 MHz did not detect any bursts. Burst fluences are in the range 37 to 13 Jy ms. No relevant scattering is observed for these bursts. We also present the results of the multi-wavelength campaign we performed on FRB 180916, during the five days of the active window. Simultaneously with the SRT observations, others with different time spans were performed with the Northern Cross at 408 MHz, with XMM-Newton, NICER, INTEGRAL, AGILE, and with the TNG and two optical telescopes in Asiago, which are equipped with fast photometers. XMM-Newton obtained data simultaneously with the three bursts detected by the SRT, and determined a luminosity upper limit in the 0.3-10 keV energy range of ~$10^{45}$ erg/s for the burst emission. AGILE obtained data simultaneously with the first burst and determined a fluence upper limit in the MeV range for millisecond timescales of $ 10^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-2}$.Our results show that absorption from the circumburst medium does not significantly affect the emission from FRB 180916, thus limiting the possible presence of a superluminous supernova around the source, and indicate that a cutoff for the bursting mechanism, if present, must be at lower frequencies. Our multi-wavelength campaign sensitively constrains the broadband emission from FRB 180916, and provides the best limits so far for the electromagnetic response to the radio bursting of this remarkable source of fast radio bursts., Comment: ApJL, 896 L40
