Search

English language teaching in Indonesia continues to improve the communicative ability of students. To support English language mastery, school subjects such as mathematics, science, and technology are taught in English. However, the main problem faced by prospective science teachers is their limited English proficiency which leads to limited English communication. Therefore, a tool called "Science Instruction in English Audiobook" was seen as one of the media which can help prospective science teachers to practice the teaching skills in English. Hence, this study aims to develop and evaluate a "Science Instruction in English Audiobook" to help prospective science teachers improve their science teaching skills in English. The skills of science teaching in English were then observed to find out the effectiveness of the audiobook. The subjects were 65 prospective science teachers. The research design was Research and Development consisting of problem analysis, literature study, product design, product validation, revision, trial, revision, application, and revision. The "Science Instruction in English Audiobook" product has been successfully developed. The product is a sound recording in .mp3 format with a duration of almost 1 hour 3 minutes 43 seconds. The audiobook contains science vocabulary material (physics, chemistry, and biology) and teaching skills in English. Following the research design steps, the product has been validated by material, media, and language experts. Based on the validation from the experts, it can be stated that the audiobook product is valid with an accumulated percentage of 98% which means it is feasible to be used as a learning resource to develop the English skills of prospective science teachers. Moreover, it has been found that audiobooks can help prospective science teachers to practice effective science teaching skills in English.

AbstractChronic pain affects more than 50 million Americans. Treatments remain inadequate, in large part, because the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of chronic pain remain poorly understood. Pain biomarkers could potentially identify and measure biological pathways and phenotypical expressions that are altered by pain, provide insight into biological treatment targets, and help identify at-risk patients who might benefit from early intervention. Biomarkers are used to diagnose, track, and treat other diseases, but no validated clinical biomarkers exist yet for chronic pain. To address this problem, the National Institutes of Health Common Fund launched the Acute to Chronic Pain Signatures (A2CPS) program to evaluate candidate biomarkers, develop them into biosignatures, and discover novel biomarkers for chronification of pain after surgery. This article discusses candidate biomarkers identified by A2CPS for evaluation, including genomic, proteomic, metabolomic, lipidomic, neuroimaging, psychophysical, psychological, and behavioral measures. Acute to Chronic Pain Signatures will provide the most comprehensive investigation of biomarkers for the transition to chronic postsurgical pain undertaken to date. Data and analytic resources generatedby A2CPS will be shared with the scientific community in hopes that other investigators will extract valuable insights beyond A2CPS's initial findings. This article will review the identified biomarkers and rationale for including them, the current state of the science on biomarkers of the transition from acute to chronic pain, gaps in the literature, and how A2CPS will address these gaps.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different pressures of homogenization on whole milk powder with crystallized lactose on free fat content and particle size. Three homogenization pressure levels were applied. The powder produced at homogenization pressure of 75/5 MPa presented a smaller number of particles in the region < 1 μm (39.28%) and higher free fat content (13.78%) when compared to the powder produced at conventional homogenization pressure (15/5 MPa), which presented 59.40% particles in the region < 1 μm and 5.03% of free fat. Milk powder produced at 0/0 MPa presented the lowest number of particles in the region < 1 μm (24.60%) and the highest free fat content (19.39%). This study showed that the powder produced at a homogenization pressure of 15/5 MPa, which is commonly used in the industry, produces a crystallized milk powder with less suitable properties than the one obtained without homogenization.

EVALUATION AND COMPARISON OF COLOIDAL SYSTEMS OF UHT MILK MARKETED IN THE SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST REGIONS OF BRAZIL. Ultra high temperature (UHT) milk has great relevance in the Brazilian dairy market. Thermal processing, physical-chemical and compositional properties have relevant impact on the quality of milk processed via UHT. The emergence of new categories of this product makes the production scenario even more challenging. The aim of this study was to investigate UHT milk and the effect of food additives on it, from a colloidal perspective, in the main consumer regions. The colloidal systems of samples with or without addition of stabilizers and with or without addition of tricalcium phosphate were evaluated based on analyses of ionic calcium concentration, pH, sedimentation, HCT (heat coagulation time), ethanol stability, particle size (D90) and zeta potential. The results indicated a relevant colloidal stability for this type of matrix, in addition to an efficient industrial homogenization process. The samples that received stabilizers addition showed lower ionic calcium, higher HCT and greater ethanol stability. There was no significant difference in sediment mass and pH. The samples that received Ca3(PO4)2 addition showed higher sedimentation and lower stability to ethanol. There were no significant differences regarding ionic calcium, pH and HCT.

Colorectal cancer is, and continues to be, one of the most important global health burdens due to its notorious high mortality rate and continuous resilience to traditional modes of treatment, specifically chemotherapeutic agents such as oxaliplatin. The resistance is mediated through specified genes highly involved in survival and resistant mechanisms in cancerous cells, like ABCG2 and UPF1 genes. Given the challenge, this study focuses on the coriander leaf extract as a new strategy for overcoming oxaliplatin resistance in colorectal cancer. In the present study, the authors examined the anticancer activities of the extracts from coriander leaves, which exerted inhibitory activity toward ABCG2 and UPF1 proteins believed to be involved in chemoresistance. Molecular docking analysis was done by PyRx software to evaluate the binding properties of the target genes with the 31 compounds in coriander leaf extract to find the best compound that may give an efficient way of overcoming resistance against oxaliplatin. Out of all the compounds screened, rutin came out to be the potential candidate. The binding affinities were highly impressive, about -8.4 kcal/mol for UPF1 and -7.8 kcal/mol for ABCG2. These values are especially important because they exceed the conventional affinity of known chemotherapy inhibitors, such as Ko143 and actinomycin D, which served as positive controls in this study. The higher binding affinity of rutin indicates that it may potentiate chemotherapy by specifically targeting ABCG2 and UPF1 in colorectal cancer cells. This strategic approach could limit the resistance to oxaliplatin and increase the treatment success rate in colorectal cancer patients. The observations of this work open up new perspectives in the study of natural products as adjuvants or alternatives to traditional chemotherapy that, in the future, could give rise to more efficient and less toxic strategies against colorectal cancer.

Most large carnivores feed on prey infrequently and may expend large amounts of energy to locate, capture and kill their prey. This makes them probabilistically vulnerable to fluctuating rates of energy acquisition over time, especially within the increasingly human-altered landscapes that dominate their remaining range. Consequently, quantifying their hunting behaviors and success rates is critical, yet direct observation of these events is rarely feasible. We theorized that we could determine prey pursuit and capture in African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) using a mechanistic approach by constructing Boolean algorithms applied to accelerometer data derived from collar-mounted tags. Here, we used this method and then iteratively improved algorithms by testing them on observed hunts and kills of collared packs. Using this approach on 47 days of acceleration from three wild dogs in three packs, we identified 29 hunts with 10 kills, all of which were confirmed by direct observation except for a single kill. Our results demonstrate that hunting effort and success can largely be determined from acceleration data using a mechanistic approach. This is particularly valuable when such behaviors are rarely quantified and offers a template for research on foraging in canid species, while also contributing to the expanding body of literature that employs similar methods to quantify hunting in large carnivores.

Kebugaran Jasmani mengacu pada seberapa baik dan buruknya sesesiswa menjaga kebugaran fisiknya. Ini merupakan ukuran dari kemampuan sesesiswa untuk menjalani aktivitas fisik dengan baik tanpa kesulitan berarti. Tujuan melaksanakan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui tingkat kebugaran jasmani jasmani siswa putra kelas VIII di SMP Negeri 01 Sukadana Kabupaten Kayong Utara. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif dengan menggunakan variable tunggal atau jumlah keseluruhan siswa putera kelas VIII yang berjumlah 81 siswa. Hasil penelitian terdapat pengkategorian kebugaran jasmani siswa putera kelas VIII dengan kategori baik sekali 3 siswa (3,7%), kategori Baik 12 siswa (14,8%), kategori Sedang 33 siswa (40,7%), kategori Kurang 28 siswa (34,6%), dan yang kategori Kurang Sekali 5 siswa (6,2%). Setelah pelaksanaan penelitian dapat disimpulkan kebugaran jasmani pada siswa putra kelas VIII di SMP Negeri 1 Sukadana Kabupaten Kayong Utara yang paling banyak adalah kategori Sedang yaitu 40,7% dari total seluruh 81 siswa

Background: Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a rare skin disease characterized by episodes of widespread sterile pustules. Methods: A retrospective cohort study using data from the US IBM MarketScan Commercial and Optum Clinformatics Data Mart databases between October 1, 2015 and March 31, 2020 was performed to describe adherence and persistence to biologics in patients with GPP. Patients were aged ≥18 years with newly diagnosed GPP (International Classification of Diseases code L40.1) and had ≥1 inpatient or ≥2 outpatient claims. Results: Biologics were dispensed to 110 of 502 (22%) and 73 of 528 (14%) patients from MarketScan and Optum databases, respectively. The mean proportion of days covered (PDC) (range) was similar in both databases (MarketScan, 65% [8%-100%]; Optum, 59% [8%-99%]), and good adherence (≥80% PDC) was uncommon (MarketScan, 36%; Optum, 24%). Mean (standard deviation) persistence was similar in both databases (MarketScan, 287 [122] days; Optum, 261 [134] days). In Optum, the mean PDC was similar between age categories; good adherence was more common in patients aged 18 to 64 years (28%) versus ≥65 years (13%). Mean persistence was longer in patients aged 18 to 64 years (267 days) versus ≥65 years (242 days). Conclusions: Overall, adherence and persistence were generally poor and varied according to the biologic class, database, and age. Improving adherence may help improve GPP treatment outcomes.

STEAM é um acrônimo para Ciências, Tecnologia, Engenharia, Artes e Matemática, promovendo uma aprendizagem significativa e colaborativa. Essa abordagem reconhece a importância da criatividade e inovação no desenvolvimento dos alunos. A Aprendizagem Baseada em Projetos (ABP) é fundamental para o STEAM, pois promove a transdisciplinaridade e conecta conceitos escolares com problemas reais. Projetos STEAM devem ser integrados e contextualizados, evitando a fragmentação do conhecimento e incentivando a investigação, criatividade e pensamento crítico. A formação docente é essencial para a implementação eficaz dessa abordagem, promovendo autonomia e autoria nos professores. Isso é crucial para formar cidadãos mais humanos, socialmente justos e preparados para os desafios. Este artigo relata um exemplo prático de formação promovido pelo Grupo de Pesquisa em Educação, Tecnologias e Cultura Digital (GRUPETeC) em uma escola técnica. Professores de diversas áreas participaram de atividades teóricas e práticas para desenvolver projetos interdisciplinares baseados na abordagem STEAM.

O estudo avaliou a substituição parcial do cimento Portland CP IV – 32 RS por pó de vidro lapidado, com aditivo plastificante, visando reduzir emissões de CO₂ e melhorar a resistência do concreto. Foram testados blocos com 0%, 3%, 5% e 7% de substituição por pó de vidro, apresentando resistências médias de 24,87 MPa, 28,64 MPa, 30,23 MPa e 32,23 MPa, respectivamente. Os resultados indicaram aumentos de resistência de 15%, 21,4% e 29,5% para as substituições de 3%, 5% e 7%, superando as expectativas. Conclui-se que essa substituição é viável e sustentável, melhorando a resistência do concreto e reduzindo seu impacto ambiental.

Background: The actual prognostic impact of prior lupus nephritis (LN) diagnosis on end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients remains questionable, especially in relation to outcomes of kidney transplantation (KTx) We aim to determine the survival of the graft and recipient after the KTx procedure among patients with ESKD due to LN in comparison to non-LN. Methods: This meta-analysis included retrospective studies from the last two decades, focusing on the KTx’s outcomes among ESKD due to LN in comparison to non-LN. We establish the graft/recipient survival rate at different follow-up intervals as the primary outcome, and acute graft rejection and pooled graft failure rate as secondary outcomes. All analyses were performed with the random-effect model (REM) and were presented as odd ratio (OR; within 95% confidence interval (CI)). The protocol of this study was registered in PROSPERO: CRD42023394310. Results: A total of 1,299 KTx (368 LN patients) from 10 studies with >10 years of follow-up were thoroughly reviewed. All checkpoints (at 1-, 5-, 10, and 15-year post-KTx) on graft survival rate demonstrated comparable outcomes in either LN or non-LN (e.g., at 10-year follow up (OR, 1.08 [0.40, 2.91]; p = 0.88). Similar findings at all checkpoints for recipient survival rate were also observed without statistically significant difference between LN and non-LN arm (e.g., at 10-year checkpoint; OR, 0.99 [0.68, 1.46]; p = 0.98). Both of our secondary analyses also presented insignificant differences (p = 0.70 and = 0.16, respectively). Conclusions: Our findings suggested that prognosis of ESKD due to complicated LN is equal compared to ESKD associated with non-LN etiologies, suggesting the impact of LN as the inducing cause of ESKD on KTx outcome is relatively neglectable.

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to reveal the JiRQA learning supports on biology students' achievement in the multi-ethnical classroom in higher education. The research sample was included 125 students consisting of the ethnics of Dayak, Javanese, and Malay. The achievement data were obtained from the pretest and posttest using an essay test and analyzed by using ANCOVA at the level of significance 5%, followed by LSD test. The analysis results show that the achievement in JiRQA learning is 30.91% higher and significantly different from that of conventional learning. The achievement of Dayak ethnic students is 20.30% higher from the Javanese ethnic and 19.53% from Malay ethnic. The achievement among ethnics in JiRQA learning was not significantly different, but significantly different in conventional learning. Therefore, JiRQA learning has the accommodate biology students' achievement in the multi-ethnical classroom.

BackgroundWith recent improvements in survival of cancer patients and common use of high-value care at end of life, the management of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with cancer is increasingly important. To our knowledge, there are no current U.S. data examining how the presence and extent of cancer influence cardiologists' decision making for common cardiovascular conditions.MethodsAn anonymous online vignette-based survey of cardiologists was conducted at five U.S. institutions investigating how the extent of gastrointestinal and thoracic malignancies (prior/localized, metastatic) would influence treatment recommendations for atrial fibrillation (AF), aortic stenosis, unstable angina (UA), and obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD).ResultsThirty-three percent (86/259) of cardiologists completed the survey between September and November 2019. Participants were 67% male, 51% below age 40, and 58% had five or more years of clinical experience. Majority of cardiologists practiced at teaching hospitals (72%) and were noninterventional (63%). Cardiologists were more likely to recommend procedural interventions for patients with localized cancer than for those with metastatic disease: AF (left atrial appendage occlusion: 20% vs. 8%), atrial stenosis (aortic valve repair: 83% vs. 11%), UA (left heart catheter: 70% vs. 27%), and obstructive CAD (percutaneous coronary intervention: 81% vs. 38%). In patients with metastatic cancer, most cardiologists sought an oncology (82%) or a palliative care (69%) consultation. However, a persistent trend of undertreatment in patients with localized cancers and overtreatment in patients with end-of-life disease was apparent.ConclusionsCardiologists were less likely to recommend invasive cardiovascular therapies to patients with metastatic cancer. This preference pattern likely reflects the influence of comorbidities and quality of life expectation on cardiologists' treatment recommendations but may also be related to the stigma of advanced cancer. Better communication between cardiologists and oncologists is necessary to provide a personalized care of patients with cancer and CVD that would maximize treatment benefit with least morbidity.

Microparticulated whey protein can be used as a fat substitute in foods to enhance their nutritional value and improve their sensory and rheological characteristics. Microparticulation denatures whey proteins through heat treatment, followed by shear rate control to determine the aggregate sizes formed. The processing method used during microparticulation can modify the protein denaturation rate, which may enable the application of new proteins. This study sought to develop a methodology for quantifying whey protein fractions in commercial samples before and after microparticulation at different concentrations and physical states. The developed methodology proved to be applicable because of its selectivity, quantification, detection limits, and precision. The analyzed samples exhibited a higher denaturation rate for β-lactoglobulin than α-lactoalbumin; the denaturation rate varied among samples due to differences in the microparticulation process.

Inclusion Body Myopathy, Paget's Disease of Bone, with Frontotemporal Dementia is a progressive autosomal dominant disease that affects the ubiquitin-proteasome complex, that is caused by variants in the Valosin Containing Protein (VCP) gene. We report the first case of concurrent pathogenic variants in both MYBPC3 and VCP that led to earlier onset of congestive heart failure with features of dilated cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy has previously been associated with VCP inclusion body myopathy mostly at an advanced stage of the disease. Due to acute onset of cardiomyopathy in a previous asymptomatic individual, a cardiomyopathy gene panel was obtained which revealed an additional c.177_187del variant of the MYBPC3 gene. We report a first case of concurrent pathogenic variants in both c.177_187del gene of MYBPC3 and p.R155C VCP that led to earlier onset and a more severe form of the cardiomyopathy.

In recent years, many educational institutions have begun to offer online learning programs, and online learning is in great demand by students. However, evaluations of online learning programs have shown a lack of quality communication between instructors and students, as well as time management constraints that lead to high student dropout rates. These conditions form the basis of the question underlying this research: What motivates students to choose online learning programs? This research aims to identify and provide an in-depth description of motivation in regard to students' learning needs. The research used a qualitative approach and post-positivistic paradigm to explore students' motivations and compare current findings with the motivations identified in the uses and gratifications framework. Thirty-two students from different backgrounds in online learning programs were involved as focus group discussion participants. As a result, this study identified four motivational categories that encourage students to choose online learning programs, namely flexibility, learning, interaction, and expression. Each category of motivation is discussed through several themes including cost-of-living efficiency, easy access to technology and materials, making friends and networking, and freedom of opinion.

Online peer support programs could address mental wellbeing concerns reported by Black students. The current evaluation explored Black university students' motivations, experiences, and perceived impacts of an online mental wellbeing peer support group (Black Students Talk [BST]) in England and Wales. We conducted two focus groups with Black Students Talk attendees and one with facilitators. Data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Three main themes and eight sub-themes where identified related to (i) Motivation: Impact of racism on mental wellbeing; (ii) Experience: The Black Students Talk experience; and (iii) Impact: Mental wellbeing outcomes. Benefits of Black Students Talk for Black students included advice, rest, validation, and support in the context of their race and experiences of racism. Facilitators had a unique sub-theme concerning their training and support. While racism exists at universities, online peer support can offer valuable benefits for Black students' mental wellbeing, social connectedness, and Black-only networks. Programs need to be co-created and delivered by trained Black students who receive reflective practice with a Black practitioner. Further independent evaluations using insights from survey and interview data are needed.

Abstract Self-testing is an effective tool to bridge the testing gap for several infectious diseases; however, its performance in detecting SARS-CoV-2 using antigen-detection rapid diagnostic tests (Ag-RDTs) has not been systematically reviewed. This study aimed to inform WHO guidelines by evaluating the accuracy of COVID-19 self-testing and self-sampling coupled with professional Ag-RDT conduct and interpretation. Articles on this topic were searched until November 7th, 2022. Concordance between self-testing/self-sampling and fully professional-use Ag-RDTs was assessed using Cohen’s kappa. Bivariate meta-analysis yielded pooled performance estimates. Quality and certainty of evidence were evaluated using QUADAS-2 and GRADE tools. Among 43 studies included, twelve reported on self-testing, and 31 assessed self-sampling only. Around 49.6% showed low risk of bias. Overall concordance with professional-use Ag-RDTs was high (kappa 0.91 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.88–0.94]). Comparing self-testing/self-sampling to molecular testing, the pooled sensitivity and specificity were 70.5% (95% CI 64.3–76.0) and 99.4% (95% CI 99.1–99.6), respectively. Introdução: o treinamento de resistência conduz à hipertrofia muscular por meio de maior síntese proteica induzida por sobrecargas progressivas nas fibras musculares. Entretanto, esse treinamento só apresentará resultados se estiver em conformidade com hábitos alimentares favoráveis à essa mudança. Objetivo: analisar a influência do acompanhamento nutricional sobre a composição corporal de indivíduos praticantes de treinamento de resistência. Materiais e métodos: estudo transversal analítico realizado em uma academia na cidade de Brazlândia, no Distrito Federal, entre os meses de outubro e novembro de 2019, em amostra composta por 10 indivíduos, de ambos os sexos, na faixa etária entre 20 e 42 anos, praticantes de treinamento de resistência há, no mínimo, um ano. Para a coleta dos dados, foi utilizado formulário próprio para dados antropométricos, recordatório 24 horas e questionário objetivo. Resultados: participantes com acompanhamento nutricional apresentaram menores percentuais de gordura corporal e maiores percentuais de massa magra em ambos os sexos. Conclusão: em termos de prevalência, indivíduos acompanhados por profissional nutricionista apresentaram menores percentuais de gordura corporal e maiores percentuais de massa magra, além de apresentarem uma maior circunferência muscular do braço em relação aos indivíduos que não realizam acompanhamento dietético, o que demonstra que o acompanhamento nutricional influencia positivamente sobre a composição corporal de indivíduos praticantes de treinamento de resistência.
