The resistance of a heavy metal can be modulated by an adjacent magnetic material through the combined effects of the spin Hall effect, inverse spin Hall effect, and dissipation of the spin accumulation at the interface. This phenomenon is known as spin Hall magnetoresistance. The dissipation of the spin accumulation can occur via various mechanisms, with spin-transfer torque being the most extensively studied. In this work, we report the observation of spin Hall magnetoresistance at the interface between platinum and an insulating altermagnetic candidate, Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$. Our findings reveal that this heterostructure exhibits a relatively large spin Hall magnetoresistance signal, which is anisotropic with respect to the crystal orientation of the current channel. We explore and rule out several potential explanations for this anisotropy and propose that our results may be understood in the context of the anisotropic altermagnetic ordering of Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$.

We develop a mesoscale transport theory for the charge and spin degrees of freedom of itinerant carriers in a $d$-wave altermagnet. Our effective Lagrangian description is built upon the slave-boson formulation of the microscopic $t-J$ model. We obtain a spin-polarized diffusive contribution to the effective Hamiltonian, with no counterpart in conventional antiferromagnetism and parametrized by the spin splitting, that is responsible for the so-called spin-splitter effect in $d$-wave altermagnets. We also elucidate the spin-transfer response of the itinerant fluid as well as the spin pumping into the altermagnet, which show previously unidentified combinations of the charge current and spatial partial derivatives (namely, {$j_{x}^{e}$,$\partial_{y}$} and {$j_{y}^{e}$,$\partial_{x}$}). The emergent spin-transfer physics in $d$-wave altermagnets opens up new possibilities for the dynamics of spin textures, such as the domain-wall motion driven by transverse charge currents. Motivated by the ongoing interest in understanding the actual magnetic ground state of the promising axion insulator candidate EuIn2As2, we present here a spin symmetry analysis and ab-initio calculations, aiming to identify specific exchange-dominated physics that could offer insights into the current debate. We investigate two non-collinear coplanar magnetic orders reported in this compound: the helical and broken helical phases. Our symmetry analysis shows that magnetic-exchange alone results in the formation of an out-of-plane odd-wave order in momentum space with a single un-polarized nodal plane in both phases. Additionally, we identified an in-plane g-wave order that emerges exclusively in the broken helical phase, providing a distinguishing feature for this phase. Furthermore, we report a non-relativistic Edelstein effect with a distinct out-of-plane polarized spin density that dominates over spin-orbit coupling effects. Our ab-initio calculations reveal a significant contrast in the magnitude of this effect between both phases, which could serve as a means to identify the magnetic transition and distinguish them from other magnetic ground states proposed for this compound., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

Magnetoelectric multiferroics are highly sought after for applications in low-power electronics and for advancing fundamental research, including axion insulators and dark matter detection. However, achieving a combination of ferroic spin and electric orders, along with their controllable switching, remains a significant challenge in conventional ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. Here, we present first-principles evidence that time-reversal symmetry-breaking altermagnetic spin polarization with relatively high critical temperatures can emerge in ferroelectrics BaCuF$_4$ (T$_N$ $\sim$ 275K) and Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$ (T$_N$ $\sim$ 110K). Furthermore, we classify all possible altermagnetic polar spin groups, revealing altermagnetism in a collinear phase of BiFeO$_3$. We also propose an altermagnetoelectric effect, a nonrelativistic cross-coupling between altermagnetic spin polarization and ferroelectric polarization, mediated by a rotation of nonmagnetic polyhedra in the lattice structure. The origin and efficiency of charge-to-spin conversion, known as the Edelstein effect (EE), has been typically linked to spin-orbit coupling mechanisms, which require materials with heavy elements within a non-centrosymmetric environment. Here we demonstrate that the high efficiency of spin-charge conversion can be achieved even without spin-orbit coupling in the recently identified coplanar p-wave magnets. The non-relativistic Edelstein effect (NREE) in these magnets exhibits a distinct phenomenology compared to the relativistic EE, characterized by a strongly anisotropic response and an out-of-plane polarized spin density resulting from the spin symmetries. We illustrate the NREE through minimal tight-binding models, allowing a direct comparison to different systems. Through first-principles calculations, we further identify the p-wave candidate material CeNiAsO as a high-efficiency NREE material, revealing a 25 times larger response than the maximally achieved relativistic EE and other reported NREE in non-collinear magnetic systems with broken time-reversal symmetry. This highlights the potential for efficient spin-charge conversion in p-wave magnetic systems.

Altermagnets constitute a new class of magnetic materials that combine properties previously thought to be exclusive to either antiferromagnets or ferromagnets, and have unique properties of their own. In particular, a combination of symmetries connecting magnetic sublattices gives rise to a band spin splitting exhibiting unconventional d, g, or i-wave character. Their unique electronic properties have already led to new spin-dependent transport effects. Here, we consider their spin and charge dynamics on ultrafast timescales. We use a minimal tight binding model that captures the main features of the altermagnetic candidate material KRu$_4$O$_8$. In the framework of this model, we compute the spin-dependent electronic scattering dynamics after ultrashort-pulse excitation and show through these microscopic calculations how electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering processes redistribute optically excited carriers in a 2D slice of the Brillouin zone. We find that the optically excited spin polarization is long lived (~1ps) compared to the electron-electron momentum scattering lifetime of roughly 10fs. This contrasts remarkably with the much shorter spin lifetimes observed in typical ultrafast electronic spin dynamics in conventional ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, making these pulse-driven spin excitation experiments a key probe of altermagnetism.

RuO$_2$ is one of the most highlighted candidates for altermagnetism. However, the most recent muon spin spectroscopy and neutron studies demonstrated the absence of magnetic order in this system. The electronic structure of RuO$_2$ hints at a possibility of realizing a magnetically ordered state upon hole doping, and such a possibility was explored experimentally in Cr-doped RuO$_2$, where it was suggested that this system exhibits the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) due to altermagnetism. In this manuscript, based on our density functional calculations, we revise the results obtained for this system and propose a different interpretation of experimental results. Our calculations suggest that extra holes are bound to Cr impurity and do not dope Ru bands, which remain nonmagnetic. Thus, the observed AHE is not due to the altermagnetism but stems entirely from magnetic Cr ions.

The Pauli exclusion principle combined with interactions between fermions is a unifying basic mechanism that can give rise to quantum phases with spin order in diverse physical systems. Transition-metal ferromagnets, with isotropic ordering respecting crystallographic rotation symmetries and with a net magnetization, are a relatively common manifestation of this mechanism, leading to numerous practical applications, e.g., in spintronic information technologies. In contrast, superfluid $^3$He has been a unique and fragile manifestation, in which the spin-ordered phase is anisotropic, breaking the real-space rotation symmetries, and has zero net magnetization. The recently discovered altermagnets share the spin-ordered anisotropic zero-magnetization nature of superfluid $^3$He. Yet, altermagnets appear to be even more abundant than ferromagnets, can be robust, and are projected to offer superior scalability for spintronics compared to ferromagnets. Our Perspective revisits the decades of research of the spin-ordered anisotropic zero-magnetization phases including, besides superfluid $^3$He, also theoretically conceived counterparts in nematic electronic liquid-crystal phases. The altermagnet candidate Mn5Si3 has attracted wide attention in the context of non-relativistic spin physics, due to its composition of light elements. However, the presumed structure of the altermagnetic phase had yet to be demonstrated. In this study, we demonstrate a hallmark of altermagnetism in Mn5Si3 thin films, namely the three options, or variants, for the checkerboard distribution of the magnetic Mn atoms. The magnetic symmetries were altered by field-rotation of the N\'eel vector along relevant crystal directions, resulting in anomalous Hall effect anisotropy. The experimental results in nanoscale devices were corroborated by a theoretical model involving atomic site dependent anisotropy and bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction for a single variant.

The recent discovery of altermagnets has opened new perspectives in the field of ordered phases in condensed matter. In strongly-correlated superfluids, the nodal p-wave and d-wave ordered phases of $^{3}$He and cuprates play a prominent role in physics for their rich phenomenology of the symmetry-breaking order parameters. While the p-wave and d-wave superfluids have been extensively studied over the past half a century, material realizations of their magnetic counterparts have remained elusive for many decades. This is resolved in altermagnets, whose recent discovery was driven by research in the field of spintronics towards highly scalable information technologies. Altermagnets feature d, g or i-wave magnetic ordering, with a characteristic alternation of spin polarization and spin-degenerate nodes. Here we review how altermagnetism can be identified from symmetries of collinear spin densities in crystal lattices, and can be realized at normal conditions in a broad family of insulating and conducting materials. We highlight salient electronic-structure signatures of the altermagnetic ordering, discuss extraordinary relativistic and topological phenomena that emerge in their band structures, and comment on strong-correlation effects. We then extend the discussion to non-collinear spin densities in crystals, including the prediction of p-wave magnets, and conclude with a brief summary of the reviewed physical properties of the nodal magnetically-ordered phases., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

The recently discovered altermagnets exhibit collinear magnetic order with zero net magnetization but with unconventional spin-polarized d/g/i-wave band structures, expanding the known paradigms of ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. In addition to novel current-driven electronic transport effects, the unconventional time-reversal symmetry breaking in these systems also makes it possible to obtain a spin response to linearly polarized fields in the optical frequency domain. We show through ab-initio calculations of the prototypical d-wave altermagnet RuO$_2$, with $[C_2\|C_{4z}]$ symmetry combining twofold spin rotation with fourfold lattice rotation, that there is an optical analogue of a spin splitter effect, as the coupling to a linearly polarized exciting laser field makes the d-wave character of the altermagnet directly visible. By magneto-optical measurements on RuO$_2$ films of a few nanometer thickness, we demonstrate the predicted connection between the polarization of an ultrashort pump pulse and the sign and magnitude of a persistent optically excited electronic spin polarization. Our results point to the possibility of exciting and controlling the electronic spin polarization in altermagnets by such ultrashort optical pulses. In addition, the possibility of exciting an electronic spin polarization by linearly polarized optical fields in a compensated system is a unique consequence of the altermagnetic material properties, and our experimental results therefore present an indication for the existence of an altermagnetic phase in ultrathin RuO$_2$ films.

The paper develops a new integral micromorphic elastic continuum model, which can describe dispersion properties of band-gap metamaterials, i.e., metamaterials that inhibit propagation of waves in a certain frequency range. The enrichment consists in nonlocal averaging of three terms in the expression for the potential energy density of the standard micromorphic continuum. After proper calibration, such a formulation can exactly reproduce two given branches of the dispersion curve (acoustic and optical), even in cases with a band gap. The calibration process exploits Fourier images of the unknown weight functions, which are analytically deduced from the dispersion relation of the material of interest. The weight functions are then reconstructed in the spatial domain by numerical evaluation of the inverse Fourier transform. The presented approach is validated on several examples, including a discrete mass-spring chain with two alternating masses, for which the dispersion relation has an explicit analytical form and the optical and acoustic branches are separated by a band gap.

Energy efficiency has become a key concern in modern computing. Major processor vendors now offer heterogeneous architectures that combine powerful cores with energy-efficient ones, such as Intel P/E systems, Apple M1 chips, and Samsungs Exyno's CPUs. However, apart from simple cost-based thread allocation strategies, today's OS schedulers do not fully exploit these systems' potential for adaptive energy-efficient computing. This is, in part, due to missing application-level interfaces to pass information about task-level energy consumption and application-level elasticity. This paper presents E-Mapper, a novel resource management approach integrated into Linux for improved execution on heterogeneous processors. In E-Mapper, we base resource allocation decisions on high-level application descriptions that user can attach to programs or that the system can learn automatically at runtime. Our approach supports various programming models including OpenMP, Intel TBB, and TensorFlow. Crucially, E-Mapper leverages this information to extend beyond existing thread-to-core allocation strategies by actively managing application configurations through a novel uniform application-resource manager interface. By doing so, E-Mapper achieves substantial enhancements in both performance and energy efficiency, particularly in multi-application scenarios. On an Intel Raptor Lake and an Arm big.LITTLE system, E-Mapper reduces the application execution on average by 20 % with an average reduction in energy consumption of 34 %. We argue that our solution marks a crucial step toward creating a generic approach for sustainable and efficient computing across different processor architectures.

Recent developments have introduced a groundbreaking form of collinear magnetism known as "altermagnetism". This emerging magnetic phase is characterized by robust time-reversal symmetry breaking, antiparallel magnetic order, and alternating spin-splitting band structures, yet it exhibits vanishing net magnetization constrained by symmetry. Altermagnetism uniquely integrates traits previously considered mutually exclusive to conventional collinear ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism, thereby facilitating phenomena and functionalities previously not achievable within these traditional categories of magnetism. Initially proposed theoretically, the existence of the altermagnetic phase has since been corroborated by a range of experimental studies, which have confirmed its unique properties and potential for applications. This review explores the rapidly expanding research on altermagnets, emphasizing the novel physical phenomena they manifest, methodologies for inducing altermagnetism, and promising altermagnetic materials. We show that magnetic insulators with a collinear and compensated order can exhibit a thermal Hall effect even at zero magnetic field if they have altermagnetic symmetries. We predict a finite thermal Hall conductivity vector $\boldsymbol{\kappa}_\text{H}$ for a rutile-inspired effective spin model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Within the linear spin-wave theory, we identify two magnon branches that carry identical Berry curvature and give rise to a finite $\boldsymbol{\kappa}_\text{H}$, which can be controlled by the N\'eel vector orientation and by strain. The thermal Hall response is further complemented with a spin Nernst response to contrast spin and heat transport in altermagnetic insulators with those in ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. Investigating the off-diagonal components of the conductivity and thermoelectric tensor of materials hosting complex antiferromagnetic structures has become a viable method to reveal the effects of topology and chirality on the electronic transport in these systems. In this respect, Mn$_5$Si$_3$ is an interesting metallic compound that exhibits several antiferromagnetic phases below 100 K with different collinear and noncollinear arrangements of Mn magnetic moments. Previous investigations have shown that the transitions between the various phases give rise to large changes of the anomalous Hall effect. Here, we report measurements of the anomalous Nernst effect of Mn$_5$Si$_3$ single crystals. Below 25 K we observe a sign change of the zero-field Nernst signal with a concomitant decrease of the Hall signal and a gradual reduction of the remanent magnetization which we attribute to a subtle rearrangement of the magnetic moment configuration at low temperatures., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Nanoscale detection and control of the magnetic order underpins a broad spectrum of fundamental research and practical device applications. The key principle involved is the breaking of time-reversal ($\cal{T}$) symmetry, which in ferromagnets is generated by an internal magnetization. However, the presence of a net-magnetization also imposes severe limitations on compatibility with other prominent phases ranging from superconductors to topological insulators, as well as on spintronic device scalability. Recently, altermagnetism has been proposed as a solution to this restriction, since it shares the enabling $\cal{T}$-symmetry breaking characteristic of ferromagnetism, combined with the antiferromagnetic-like vanishing net-magnetization. To date, altermagnetic ordering has been inferred from spatially averaged probes. Here, we demonstrate nanoscale imaging and control of altermagnetic ordering ranging from nanoscale vortices to domain walls to microscale single-domain states in MnTe. We combine the $\cal{T}$-symmetry breaking sensitivity of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism with magnetic linear dichroism and photoemission electron microscopy, to achieve detailed imaging of the local altermagnetic ordering vector. A rich variety of spin configurations can be imposed using microstructure patterning or thermal cycling in magnetic fields. The demonstrated detection and control of altermagnetism paves the way for future research ranging from ultra-scalable digital and neuromorphic spintronic devices, to the interplay of altermagnetism with non-dissipative superconducting or topological phases., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

The anomalous Nernst effect generates transverse voltage to the applied thermal gradient in magnetically ordered systems. The effect was previously considered excluded in compensated magnetic materials with collinear ordering. However, in the recently identified class of compensated magnetic materials, dubbed altermagnets, time-reversal symmetry breaking in the electronic band structure makes the presence of the anomalous Nernst effect possible despite the collinear spin arrangement. In this work, we investigate epitaxial Mn5Si3 thin films known to be an altermagnetic candidate. We show that the material manifests a sizable anomalous Nernst coefficient despite the small net magnetization of the films. The measured magnitudes of the anomalous Nernst coefficient reach a scale of microVolts per Kelvin. We support our magneto-thermoelectric measurements by density-functional theory calculations of the material's spin-split electronic structure, which allows for the finite Berry curvature in the reciprocal space. Furthermore, we present our calculations of the intrinsic Berry-curvature Nernst conductivity, which agree with our experimental observations.

While the understanding of altermagnetism is still at a very early stage, it is expected to play a role in various fields of condensed matter research, for example spintronics, caloritronics and superconductivity. In the field of optical magnetism, it is still unclear to which extent altermagnets as a class can exhibit a distinct behavior. Here we choose RuO$_2$, a prototype metallic altermagnet with a giant spin splitting, and CoF$_2$, an experimentally known insulating altermagnet, to study the light-induced magnetism in rutile altermagnets from first-principles. We demonstrate that in the non-relativisic limit the allowed sublattice-resolved orbital response exhibits symmetries, imposed by altermagnetism, which lead to a drastic canting of light-induced moments. On the other hand, we find that inclusion of spin-orbit interaction enhances the overall effect drastically, introduces a significant anisotropy with respect to the light polarization and strongly suppresses the canting of induced moments. Remarkably, we observe that the moments induced by linearly-polarized laser pulses in light altermagnets can even exceed in magnitude those predicted for heavy ferromagnets exposed to circularly polarized light. By resorting to microscopic tools we interpret our results in terms of the altermagnetic spin splittings and of their reciprocal space distribution. Based on our findings, we speculate that optical excitations may provide a unique tool to switch and probe the magnetic state of rutile altermagnets.

We present a phenomenological theory of altermagnets, that captures their unique magnetization dynamics and allows modelling magnetic textures in this new magnetic phase. Focusing on the prototypical d-wave altermagnets, e.g. RuO$_2$, we can explain intuitively the characteristic lifted degeneracy of their magnon spectra, by the emergence of an effective sublattice-dependent anisotropic spin stiffness arising naturally from the phenomenological theory. We show that as a consequence the altermagnetic domain walls, in contrast to antiferromagnets, have a finite gradient of the magnetization, with its strength and gradient direction connected to the altermagnetic anisotropy, even for 180$^\circ$ domain walls. This gradient generates a ponderomotive force in the domain wall in the presence of a strongly inhomogeneous external magnetic field, which may be achieved through magnetic force microscopy techniques. The motion of these altermagentic domain walls is also characterized by an anisotropic Walker breakdown, with much higher speed limits of propagation than ferromagnets but lower than antiferromagnets.

The newly discovered altermagnets are unconventional collinear compensated magnetic systems, exhibiting even (d, g, or i-wave) spin-polarization order in the band structure, setting them apart from conventional collinear ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. Altermagnets offer advantages of spin polarized current akin to ferromagnets, and THz functionalities similar to antifferomagnets, while introducing new novel effects like spin-splitter currents. A key challenge for future applications and functionalization of altermagnets, is to demonstrate controlled transitioning to the altermagnetic phase from other conventional phases in a single material. Here we prove a viable path towards overcoming this challenge through a strain-induced transition from an antiferromagnetic to an altermagnetic phase in ReO$_2$. Combining spin group symmetry analysis and \textit{ab-initio} calculations, we demonstrate that under compressive strain ReO$_2$ undergoes such transition, lifting the Kramer's degeneracy of the band structure of the antiferromagnetic phase in the non-relativistic regime. In addition, we show that this magnetic transition is accompanied by a metal insulator transition, and calculate the distinct spin polarized spectral functions of the two phases, which can be detected in angle resolved photo-emission spectroscopy experiments., Comment: 6 Figures

Altermagnetic (AM) materials exhibit non-relativistic, momentum-dependent spin-split states, ushering in new opportunities for spin electronic devices. While the characteristics of spin-splitting have been documented within the framework of the non-relativistic spin group symmetry, there has been limited exploration of the inclusion of relativistic symmetry and its impact on the emergence of a novel spin-splitting in the band structure. This study delves into the intricate relativistic electronic structure of an AM material, alpha-MnTe. Employing temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy across the AM phase transition, we elucidate the emergence of a relativistic valence band splitting concurrent with the establishment of magnetic order. This discovery is validated through disordered local moment calculations, modeling the influence of magnetic order on the electronic structure and confirming the magnetic origin of the observed splitting. The temperature-dependent splitting is ascribed to the advent of relativistic spin-splitting resulting from the strengthening of AM order in alpha-MnTe as the temperature decreases. This sheds light on a previously unexplored facet of this intriguing material.

Altermagnets (AM) is a recently discovered class of collinear magnets that share some properties (anomalous transport, etc) with ferromagnets, some (zero net magnetization) with antiferromagnets, while also exhibiting unique properties (spin-splitting of electronic bands and resulting spin-splitter current). Since the moment compensation in AM is driven by symmetry, it must be possible to identify them by analyzing the crystal structure directly, without computing the electronic structure. Altermagnets are compensated magnets belonging to spin symmetry groups that allow alternating spin polarizations both in the coordinate space of the crystal and in the momentum space of the electronic structure. In these materials the anisotropic local crystal environment of the different sublattices lowers the symmetry of the system so that the opposite-spin sublattices are connected only by rotations, which results in an unconventional spin-polarized band structure in the momentum space. This low symmetry of the crystal structure is expected to be reflected in the anisotropy of the anomalous Hall effect. In this work, we study the anisotropy of the anomalous Hall effect in epitaxial thin films of Mn$_5$Si$_3$, an altermagnetic candidate material. We first demonstrate a change in the relative N\'eel vector orientation when rotating the external field orientation through systematic changes in both the anomalous Hall effect and the anisotropic longitudinal magnetoresistance. We then show that the anomalous Hall effect in this material is anisotropic with the N\'eel vector orientation relative to the crystal structure and that this anisotropy requires high crystal quality and unlikely correlates with the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Altermagnetism has emerged as a third type of collinear magnetism. In contrast to standard ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, altermagnets exhibit extra even-parity wave spin order parameters resulting in a spin-splitting of electronic bands in momentum space. In real space, sublattices of opposite spin polarization are anisotropic and related by rotational symmetry. In the hitherto identified altermagnetic candidate materials the anisotropies arise from the local crystallographic symmetry. Here, we show that altermagnetism can also form as an interaction-induced electronic instability in a lattice without the crystallographic sublattice anisotropy. We provide a microscopic example of a two-orbital model showing that the coexistence of staggered antiferromagnetic and orbital order can realize robust altermagnetism. We quantify the spin-splitter conductivity as a key experimental observable and discuss material candidates for the interaction-induced realization of altermagnetism.

The detection of a voltage transverse to both an applied current and a magnetic field is one of the most common characterization techniques in solid-state physics. The corresponding component of the resistivity tensor $\rho_{ij}$ can be separated into odd and even parts with respect to the applied magnetic field. The former contains information, for example, about the ordinary or anomalous Hall effect. The latter is typically ascribed to experimental artefacts and ignored. We here show that upon suppressing these artefacts in carefully controlled experiments, useful information remains. We first investigate the well-explored ferromagnet CoFeB, where the even part of $\rho_{yx}$ contains a contribution from the anisotropic magnetoresistance, which we confirm by Stoner-Wohlfarth modelling. We then apply our approach to magnetotransport measurements in $\rm Mn_5Si_3$ thin films with a complex compensated magnetic order. In this material, the even part of the transverse signal is sizable only in the low-spin-symmetry phase below $\approx 80$ K and thus offers a simple and readily available probe of the magnetic order., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

Topological semimetal antiferromagnets provide a rich source of exotic topological states which can be controlled by manipulating the orientation of the N\'eel vector, or by modulating the lattice parameters through strain. We investigate via ${ab\ initio}$ density functional theory calculations, the effects of shear strain on the bulk and surface states n two antiferromagnetic EuCd$_2$As$_2$ phases with out-of-plane and in-plane spin configurations. When magnetic moments are along the $\textit{c}$-axis, a $3\%$ longitudinal or diagonal shear strain can tune the Dirac semimetal phase to an axion insulator phase, characterized by the parity-based invariant $\eta_{4I} = 2$. For an in-plane magnetic order, the axion insulator phase remains robust under all shear strains. We further find that for both magnetic orders, the bulk gap increases and a surface gap opens on the (001) surface up to 16 meV. Because of a nonzero $\eta_{4I}$ index and gapped states on the (001) surface, hinge modes are expected to happen on the side surface states between those gapped surface states. Altermagnetism represents an emergent collinear magnetic phase with compensated order and an unconventional alternating even-parity wave spin order in the non-relativistic band structure. We investigate directly this unconventional band splitting near the Fermi energy through spinintegrated soft X-ray angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimentally obtained angle-dependent photoemission intensity, acquired from epitaxial thin films of the predicted altermagnet CrSb, demonstrates robust agreement with the corresponding band structure calculations. In particular, we observe the distinctive splitting of an electronic band on a low-symmetry path in the Brilliouin zone that connects two points featuring symmetry-induced degeneracy. The measured large magnitude of the spin splitting of approximately 0.6 eV and the position of the band just below the Fermi energy underscores the signifcance of altermagnets for spintronics based on robust broken time reversal symmetry responses arising from exchange energy scales, akin to ferromagnets, while remaining insensitive to external magnetic fields and possessing THz dynamics, akin to antiferromagnets., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures (including supplementary information)

Conventional antiferromagnets are known for their time-reversal symmetry in their electronic structure, which results in a zero anomalous Hall coefficient. On the other hand, compensated magnets with noncollinear or canted moments or altermagnets can yield a nonzero anomalous Hall signal and a nondissipative transversal current. While high-symmetry systems typically exhibit an isotropic Hall effect, more interesting are low-symmetry systems, such as hematite, which demonstrates exceptional magnetotransport behavior as it becomes conductive upon slight Ti doping. We scrutinize the magnetotransport in Titanium-doped hematite, revealing a pronounced and unconventional symmetry dependence, particularly contingent on crystal orientation. Our findings establish a compelling correlation between our experimental observations and the classification of hematite as an altermagnet with anisotropic magnetotransport and anomalous Hall effect. Remarkably, our observations result from measurements in the hopping-transport regime, showing that particular transport properties in altermagnets are not limited to conventional band conduction.

Altermagnets (AM) are a recently discovered third class of collinear magnets, distinctly different from conventional ferromagnets (FM) and antiferromagnets (AF). AM have been actively researched in the last few years, but two aspects so far remain unaddressed: (1) Are there realistic 2D single-layer altermagnets? And (2) is it possible to functionalize a conventional AF into AM by external stimuli? In this paper we address both issues by demonstrating how a well-known 2D AF, MnP(S,Se)$_3$ can be functionalized into strong AM by applying out-of-plane electric field. Of particular interest is that the induced altermagnetism is of a higher even-parity wave symmetry than expected in 3D AM with similar crystal symmetries. We confirm our finding by first-principles calculations of the electronic structure and magnetooptical response. We also propose that recent observations of the time-reversal symmetry breaking in the famous Fe-based superconducting chalchogenides, either in monolayer form or in the surface layer, may be related not to an FM, as previously assumed, but to the induced 2D AM order. Finally, we show that monolayer FeSe can simultaneously exhibit unconventional altermagnetic time-reversal symmetry breaking and quantized spin Hall conductivity indicating possibility to research an intriquing interplay of 2D altermagnetism with topological and superconducting states within a common crystal-potential environment., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

The p-wave Cooper-pairing instability in superfluid $^{3}$He, characterized by a parity-breaking excitation gap, is regarded as one of the most rich and complex phenomena in physics. The possibility of a counterpart unconventional p-wave ordering of interacting fermions, in which a Fermi surface spontaneously breaks the parity symmetry, has been an open problem for many decades. Here we identify the realization of the counterpart of p-wave superfluidity in magnetism. We demonstrate a strong parity-breaking and anisotropic symmetry lowering of spin-polarized and time-reversal symmetric Fermi surfaces in a representative p-wave magnet CeNiAsO. As a direct experimental signature we predict a large spontaneous anisotropy of the resistivity. Abundant and robust realizations of the unconventional p-wave magnetism can be identified from suitable non-relativistic crystal-lattice and spin symmetries, without requiring strong correlations and extreme external conditions. Observations of the anomalous Hall effect in RuO$_2$ and MnTe have demonstrated unconventional time-reversal symmetry breaking in the electronic structure of a recently identified new class of compensated collinear magnets, dubbed altermagnets. While in MnTe the unconventional anomalous Hall signal accompanied by a vanishing magnetization is observable at remanence, the anomalous Hall effect in RuO$_2$ is excluded by symmetry for the N\'eel vector pointing along the zero-field [001] easy-axis. Guided by a symmetry analysis and ab initio calculations, a field-induced reorientation of the N\'eel vector from the easy-axis towards the [110] hard-axis was used to demonstrate the anomalous Hall signal in this altermagnet. We confirm the existence of an anomalous Hall effect in our RuO$_2$ thin-film samples whose set of magnetic and magneto-transport characteristics is consistent with the earlier report. By performing our measurements at extreme magnetic fields up to 68 T, we reach saturation of the anomalous Hall signal at a field $H_{\rm c} \simeq$ 55 T that was inaccessible in earlier studies, but is consistent with the expected N\'eel-vector reorientation field., Comment: 4 figures

Altermagnets are compensated magnets with unconvetional $d$, $g$ and $i$-wave spin-channel order in reciprocal space. So far the search for new altermagnetic candidates has been focused on materials in which the magnetic unit cell is identical to the non-magnetic one, i.e. magnetic structures with zero propagation vector. Here, we substantially broaden the family of altermagnetic candidates by predicting supercell altermagnets. Their magnetic unit cell is constructed by enlarging the paramagnetic primitive unit cell, resulting in a non-zero propagation vector for the magnetic structure. This connection of the magnetic configuration to the ordering of sublattices gives an extra degree of freedom to supercell altermagnets, which can allow for the control over the order parameter spatial orientation. We identify realistic candidates MnSe$_2$ with a $d$-wave order, and RbCoBr$_3$, CsCoCr$_3$, and BaMnO$_3$ with $g$-wave order. We demonstrate the reorientation of the order parameter in MnSe$_2$, which has two different magnetic configurations, whose energy difference is only 5 meV, opening the possibility of controlling the orientation of the altermagnetic order parameter by external perturbations., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Altermagnetism is a newly identified fundamental class of magnetism with vanishing net magnetization and time-reversal symmetry broken electronic structure. Probing the unusual electronic structure with nonrelativistic spin splitting would be a direct experimental verification of altermagnetic phase. By combining high-quality film growth and $in~situ$ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report the electronic structure of an altermagnetic candidate, $\alpha$-MnTe. Temperature dependent study reveals the lifting of Kramers{\textquoteright} degeneracy accompanied by a magnetic phase transition at $T_N=267\text{ K}$ with spin splitting of up to $370\text{ meV}$, providing direct spectroscopic evidence for altermagnetism in MnTe.

Lifted Kramers spin-degeneracy has been among the central topics of condensed-matter physics since the dawn of the band theory of solids. It underpins established practical applications as well as current frontier research, ranging from magnetic-memory technology to topological quantum matter. Traditionally, lifted Kramers spin-degeneracy has been considered to originate from two possible internal symmetry-breaking mechanisms. The first one refers to time-reversal symmetry breaking by magnetization of ferromagnets, and tends to be strong due to the non-relativistic exchange-coupling origin. The second mechanism applies to crystals with broken inversion symmetry, and tends to be comparatively weaker as it originates from the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. A recent theory work based on spin-symmetry classification has identified an unconventional magnetic phase, dubbed altermagnetic, that allows for lifting the Kramers spin degeneracy without net magnetization and inversion-symmetry breaking. Here we provide the confirmation using photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. We identify two distinct unconventional mechanisms of lifted Kramers spin degeneracy generated by the altermagnetic phase of centrosymmetric MnTe with vanishing net magnetization. Our observation of the altermagnetic lifting of the Kramers spin degeneracy can have broad consequences in magnetism. It motivates exploration and exploitation of the unconventional nature of this magnetic phase in an extended family of materials, ranging from insulators and semiconductors to metals and superconductors, that have been either identified recently or perceived for many decades as conventional antiferromagnets.

Motivated by the wealth of proposals and realizations of nontrivial topological phases in EuCd$_2$As$_2$, such as a Weyl semimetallic state and the recently discussed semimetallic versus semiconductor behavior in this system, we analyze in this work the role of the delicate interplay of Eu magnetism, strain and pressure on the realization of such phases. For that we invoke a combination of a group theoretical analysis with ab initio density functional theory calculations and uncover a rich phase diagram with various non-trivial topological phases beyond a Weyl semimetallic state, such as axion and topological crystalline insulating phases, and discuss their realization., Comment: v3 fixed typo in Fig. 3

Progress in magnetoelectric materials is hindered by apparently contradictory requirements for time-reversal symmetry broken and polar ferroelectric electronic structure in common ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. Alternative routes could be provided by recent discoveries of a time-reversal symmetry breaking anomalous Hall effect in noncollinear magnets and altermagnets, but hitherto reported bulk materials are not polar. Here, we report the observation of a spontaneous anomalous Hall effect in doped AgCrSe$_2$, a layered polar semiconductor with an antiferromagnetic coupling between Cr spins in adjacent layers. The anomalous Hall resistivity 3 $\mu\Omega$ cm is comparable to the largest observed in compensated magnetic systems to date, and is rapidly switched off when the angle of an applied magnetic field is rotated to $\sim 80^{\circ}$ from the crystalline $c$-axis. Our ionic gating experiments show that the anomalous Hall conductivity magnitude can be enhanced by modulating the $p$-type carrier density. We also present theoretical results that suggest the anomalous Hall effect is driven by Berry curvature due to noncollinear antiferromagnetic correlations among Cr spins, which are consistent with the previously suggested magnetic ordering in AgCrSe$_2$. Resistivity measurements are widely exploited to uncover electronic excitations and phase transitions in metallic solids. While single crystals are preferably studied to explore crystalline anisotropies, these usually cancel out in polycrystalline materials. Here we show that in polycrystalline Mn3Zn0.5Ge0.5N with non-collinear antiferromagnetic order, changes in the diagonal and, rather unexpected, off-diagonal components of the resistivity tensor occur at low temperatures indicating subtle transitions between magnetic phases of different symmetry. This is supported by neutron scattering and explained within a phenomenological model which suggests that the phase transitions in magnetic field are associated with field induced topological orbital momenta. The fact that we observe transitions between spin phases in a polycrystal, where effects of crystalline anisotropy are cancelled suggests that they are only controlled by exchange interactions. Altermagnets are an emerging third elementary class of magnets. Unlike ferromagnets, their distinct crystal symmetries inhibit magnetization while, unlike antiferromagnets, they promote strong spin polarization in the band structure. The corresponding unconventional mechanism of timereversal symmetry breaking without magnetization in the electronic spectra has been regarded as a primary signature of altermagnetism, but has not been experimentally visualized to date. We directly observe strong time-reversal symmetry breaking in the band structure of altermagnetic RuO$_2$ by detecting magnetic circular dichroism in angle-resolved photoemission spectra. Our experimental results, supported by ab initio calculations, establish the microscopic electronic-structure basis for a family of novel phenomena and functionalities in fields ranging from topological matter to spintronics, that are based on the unconventional time-reversal symmetry breaking in altermagnets.

Altermagnetism is a recently identified magnetic symmetry class combining characteristics of conventional collinear ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, that were regarded as mutually exclusive, and enabling phenomena and functionalities unparalleled in either of the two traditional elementary magnetic classes. In this work we use symmetry and ab initio theory to explore X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in the altermagnetic class. Our results highlight the distinct phenomenology in altermagnets of this time-reversal symmetry breaking response, and its potential utility for element-specific spectroscopy and microscopy in altermagnets. As a representative material for our XMCD study we choose $\alpha$-MnTe with the compensated antiparallel magnetic order in which an anomalous Hall effect has been already demonstrated both in theory and experiment. We demonstrate the emergence of a pronounced thermal transport in the recently discovered class of magnetic materials-altermagnets. From symmetry arguments and first-principles calculations performed for the showcase altermagnet, RuO2, we uncover that crystal Nernst and crystal thermal Hall effects in this material are very large and strongly anisotropic with respect to the Neel vector. We find the large crystal thermal transport to originate from three sources of Berry's curvature in momentum space: the Weyl fermions due to crossings between well-separated bands, the strong spin-flip pseudonodal surfaces, and the weak spin-flip ladder transitions, defined by transitions among very weakly spin-split states of similar dispersion crossing the Fermi surface. Moreover, we reveal that the anomalous thermal and electrical transport coefficients in RuO2 are linked by an extended Wiedemann-Franz law in a temperature range much wider than expected for conventional magnets. Our results suggest that altermagnets may assume a leading role in realizing concepts in spin caloritronics not achievable with ferromagnets or antiferromagnets., Comment: 6 pages

Topological antiferromagnetic systems, which exhibit anisotropic band structures combined with complex relativistic spin structures in momentum space, have shown strong magnetoresistance effects driven by Dirac fermion characteristics. While these new antiferromagnets have been studied in transport experiments, very little is known about their spin-dependent electronic dynamics on ultrafast timescales and far-from-equilibrium behavior. This paper investigates theoretically the spin-dependent electronic dynamics due to electron-phonon scattering in a model electronic band structure that corresponds to a Dirac semimetal antiferromagnet. Following a spin conserving instantaneous excitation we obtain a change of the antiferromagnetic spin polarization due to the scattering dynamics for the site-resolved spin expectation values. This allows us to identify fingerprints of the anisotropic band structure in the carrier dynamics on ultrashort timescales which should be observable in present experimental set-ups.

The design of band-gap metamaterials, i.e., metamaterials with the capability to inhibit wave propagation of a specific frequency range, has numerous potential engineering applications, such as acoustic filters and vibration isolation control. In order to describe the behavior of such materials, a novel integral micromorphic elastic continuum is introduced, and its ability to describe band gaps is studied in the one-dimensional setting. The nonlocal formulation is based on a modification of two terms in the expression for potential energy density. The corresponding dispersion equation is derived and converted to a dimensionless format, so that the effect of individual parameters can be described in the most efficient way. The results indicate that both suggested nonlocal modifications play an important role. The original local micromorphic model reproduces a band gap only in the special, somewhat artificial case, when the stiffness coefficient associated with the gradient of the micromorphic variable vanishes. On the other hand, the nonlocal formulation can provide band gaps even for nonzero values of this coefficient, provided that the penalty coefficient that enforces coupling between the micromorphic variable and nonlocal strain is sufficiently high and the micromorphic stiffness is sufficiently low.

Magnons in ferromagnets have one chirality, and typically are in the GHz range and have a quadratic dispersion near the zero wavevector. In contrast, magnons in antiferromagnets are commonly considered to have bands with both chiralities that are degenerate across the entire Brillouin zone, and to be in the THz range and to have a linear dispersion near the center of the Brillouin zone. Here we theoretically demonstrate a new class of magnons on a prototypical $d$-wave altermagnet RuO$_2$ with the compensated antiparallel magnetic order in the ground state. Based on density-functional-theory calculations we observe that the THz-range magnon bands in RuO$_2$ have an alternating chirality splitting, similar to the alternating spin splitting of the electronic bands, and a linear magnon dispersion near the zero wavevector. We also show that, overall, the Landau damping of this metallic altermagnet is suppressed due to the spin-split electronic structure, as compared to an artificial antiferromagnetic phase of the same RuO$_2$ crystal with spin-degenerate electronic bands and chirality-degenerate magnon bands., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Tetragonal CuMnAs is a room temperature antiferromagnet with an electrically reorientable N\'eel vector and a Dirac semimetal candidate. Direct measurements of the electronic structure of single-crystalline thin films of tetragonal CuMnAs using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) are reported, including Fermi surfaces (FS) and energy-wavevector dispersions. After correcting for a chemical potential shift of $\approx-390$ meV (hole doping), there is excellent agreement of FS, orbital character of bands, and Fermi velocities between the experiment and density functional theory calculations. Additionally, 2x1 surface reconstructions are found in the low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and ARPES. This work underscores the need to control the chemical potential in tetragonal CuMnAs to enable the exploration and exploitation of the Dirac fermions with tunable masses, which are predicted to be above the chemical potential in the present samples., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review X. 20 pages. 9 figures

Magnetism is one of the largest, most fundamental, and technologically most relevant fields of condensed-matter physics. Traditionally, two basic magnetic phases have been considered -- ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. The breaking of the time-reversal symmetry and spin splitting of the electronic states by the magnetization in ferromagnets underpins a range of macroscopic responses in this extensively explored and exploited type of magnets. By comparison, antiferromagnets have vanishing net magnetization. This Perspective reflects on recent observations of materials hosting an intriguing ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic dichotomy, in which spin-split spectra and macroscopic observables, akin to ferromagnets, are accompanied by antiparallel magnetic order with vanishing magnetization, typical of antiferromagnets. An unconventional non-relativistic symmetry-group formalism offers a resolution of this apparent contradiction by delimiting a third basic magnetic phase, dubbed altermagnetism. Our Perspective starts with an overview of the still emerging unique phenomenology of the phase, and of the wide array of altermagnetic material candidates. The anomalous Hall effect, commonly observed in metallic magnets, has been established to originate from the time-reversal symmetry breaking by an internal macroscopic magnetization in ferromagnets or by a non-collinear magnetic order. Here we observe a spontaneous anomalous Hall signal in the absence of an external magnetic field in an epitaxial film of MnTe, which is a semiconductor with a collinear antiparallel magnetic ordering of Mn moments and a vanishing net magnetization. The anomalous Hall effect arises from an unconventional phase with strong time-reversal symmetry breaking and alternating spin polarization in real-space crystal structure and momentum-space electronic structure. The anisotropic crystal environment of magnetic Mn atoms due to the non-magnetic Te atoms is essential for establishing the unconventional phase and generating the anomalous Hall effect., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures
