1. Revealing the state transition of Cen X-3 at high spectral resolution with Chandra

Abstract

Cen X-3 is a compact, high-mass X-ray binary (HMXRB), likely powered by Roche lobe overflow. We present a phase-resolved X-ray spectral and timing analysis of a target of opportunity \textit{Chandra} observation made during a low-flux to high-flux transition. The high-resolution spectra allow us to delve into the events that occurred during this episode. The spectrum is described by a single black body absorbed by a local column density of the order of $10^{23-24}$ cm$^{-2}$, which is one to two orders of magnitude higher than found for previous analyses of data taken at similar orbital phases. Such a large column produces a Compton shoulder in the Fe K$\alpha$ line. The transition appears to be caused by the onset of efficient cooling, which cools the plasma by 10 million degrees in just 10 ks, allowing matter to enter the magnetosphere. This happens after a major disturbance, probably the arrival of a train of wind clumps with individual masses in the range $10^{19-20}$ g. This train moves ballistically in an eccentric orbit around the NS, producing a distinctive Doppler modulation in the \ion{Fe}{xxv} line.

Abstract

Flamenco, recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is a profound expression of cultural identity rooted in Andalusia, Spain. However, there is a lack of quantitative studies that help identify characteristic patterns in this long-lived music tradition. In this work, we present a computational analysis of Flamenco lyrics, employing natural language processing and machine learning to categorize over 2000 lyrics into their respective Flamenco genres, termed as $\textit{palos}$. Using a Multinomial Naive Bayes classifier, we find that lexical variation across styles enables to accurately identify distinct $\textit{palos}$. More importantly, from an automatic method of word usage, we obtain the semantic fields that characterize each style. Further, applying a metric that quantifies the inter-genre distance we perform a network analysis that sheds light on the relationship between Flamenco styles. Remarkably, our results suggest historical connections and $\textit{palo}$ evolutions. Overall, our work illuminates the intricate relationships and cultural significance embedded within Flamenco lyrics, complementing previous qualitative discussions with quantitative analyses and sparking new discussions on the origin and development of traditional music genres., Comment: 21 pages, 29 figures

Abstract

Abstract Quantum thermodynamics is aimed at grasping thermodynamic laws as they apply to thermal machines operating in the deep quantum regime, where coherence and entanglement are expected to matter. Despite substantial progress, however, it has remained difficult to develop thermal machines in which such quantum effects are observed to be of pivotal importance. In this work, we demonstrate the possibility to experimentally measure and benchmark a genuine quantum correction, induced by quantum friction, to the classical work fluctuation-dissipation relation. This is achieved by combining laser-induced coherent Hamiltonian rotations and energy measurements on a trapped ion. Our results demonstrate that recent developments in stochastic quantum thermodynamics can be used to benchmark and unambiguously distinguish genuine quantum coherent signatures generated along driving protocols, even in presence of experimental SPAM errors and, most importantly, beyond the regimes for which theoretical predictions are available (e.g., in slow driving).

4. Modeling language ideologies for the dynamics of languages in contact

Abstract

In multilingual societies, it is common to encounter different language varieties. Various approaches have been proposed to discuss different mechanisms of language shift. However, current models exploring language shift in languages in contact often overlook the influence of language ideologies. Language ideologies play a crucial role in understanding language usage within a cultural community, encompassing shared beliefs, assumptions, and feelings towards specific language forms. These ideologies shed light on the social perceptions of different language varieties expressed as language attitudes. In this study, we introduce an approach that incorporates language ideologies into a model for contact varieties by considering speaker preferences as a parameter. Our findings highlight the significance of preference in language shift, which can even outweigh the influence of language prestige associated, for example, with a standard variety. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of the degree of interaction between individuals holding opposing preferences on the language shift process. Quite expectedly, our results indicate that when communities with different preferences mix, the coexistence of language varieties becomes less likely. However, variations in the degree of interaction between individuals with contrary preferences notably lead to non-trivial transitions from states of coexistence of varieties to the extinction of a given variety, followed by a return to coexistence, ultimately culminating in the dominance of the previously extinct variety. By studying finite-size effects, we observe that the duration of coexistence states increases exponentially with network size. Abstract

Background: In patients with low-gradient (LG) aortic stenosis (AS), confirming disease severity and indication of intervention often requires dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) or aortic valve calcium scoring by computed tomography. We hypothesized that the mean transvalvular pressure gradient to effective orifice area ratio (MG/EOA, in mm Hg/cm2) measured during rest echocardiography identifies true-severe AS (TSAS) and is associated with clinical outcomes in patients with low-flow, LG-AS. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of MG/EOA ratio. Methods: The diagnostic accuracy of MG/EOA ratio to identify TSAS was retrospectively assessed in: 1) an in vitro data set obtained in a circulatory model including 93 experimental conditions; and 2) an in vivo data set of 188 patients from the TOPAS (True or Pseudo-Severe Aortic Stenosis) study (NCT01835028). Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess the diagnostic accuracy of MG/EOA ratio for identifying TSAS, and Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were performed to assess its association with clinical outcomes. Results: The optimal cutoff of MG/EOA ratio to identify TSAS in patients with low-flow, LG-AS was ≥25 mm Hg/cm2 (correct classification 85%), as well as in vitro (100%). During a median follow-up of 1.41 ± 0.75 years, 146 (78%) patients met the composite endpoint of aortic valve replacement or all-cause mortality. Abstract

Quantum thermodynamics is aimed at grasping thermodynamic laws as they apply to thermal machines operating in the deep quantum regime, a regime in which coherences and entanglement are expected to matter. Despite substantial progress, however, it has remained difficult to develop thermal machines in which such quantum effects are observed to be of pivotal importance. In this work, we report an experimental measurement of the genuine quantum correction to the classical work fluctuation-dissipation relation (FDR). We employ a single trapped ion qubit, realizing thermalization and coherent drive via laser pulses, to implement a quantum coherent work protocol. The results from a sequence of two-time work measurements display agreement with the recently proven quantum work FDR, violating the classical FDR by more than $10.9$ standard deviations. We furthermore determine that our results are incompatible with any SPAM error-induced correction to the FDR by more than 10 standard deviations. Finally, we show that the quantum correction vanishes in the high-temperature limit, again in agreement with theoretical predictions., Comment: 5+4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The aim of this work is to study both light curve and orbital phase spectroscopy of this source taking advantage of the MAXI/GSC observation strategy. We have investigated the spectral and light curve properties of the X-ray emission from Cen X-3 along the binary orbit. These studies allow delimiting the stellar wind properties and its interactions with the compact object. A timing analysis of light curves in different energy bands was carried out. From the analysis of the light curve, we have estimated the orbital period of the binary system and also found possible QPOs around a superorbital period of $P_\mathrm{superorb} = 220\pm 5$ days. Both orbital phase-averaged and phase-resolved spectra were extracted and analysed in the 2.0-20.0 keV energy range. We have defined and compared the high and low states spectra with the averaged spectrum. Two models have described spectra satisfactorily, a partial absorbed Comptonization of cool photons on hot electrons plus a power law and a partial absorbed blackbody plus a power law, both modified by adding Gaussian lines. The radius of the blackbody emitting area has been determined and the high value of the X-ray luminosity in the averaged spectrum indicates that the accretion mode is not only due to the stellar wind., Comment: 41 pages (draft version), 21 figures. 9. The first X-ray spectrum of the HMXB XTE J1855-026 during the compact object eclipse

Abstract

We present the first {\it XMM-Newton} observation of the classical supergiant high-mass X-ray binary XTE J1855$-$026 taken entirely during the eclipse of the neutron star (NS), covering the orbital phases $\phi= 0.00-0.11$. The analysis of the data allows us to a) compare with the parameters obtained during the existing pre eclipse observation and b) explore the back illuminated stellar wind of the B0I type donor. The black body component, used to describe the soft excess during pre eclipse, is not observed during eclipse. It must be then produced near the NS or along the donor-NS line. The $0.3-10$ keV luminosity during eclipse ($\sim 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$) is 70 times lower than pre eclipse. The intensity of the Fe K$\alpha$ line, in the average eclipse spectrum, is $\sim 7.4$ times lower than the one measured during pre eclipse. Since K$\alpha$ photons can not be resonantly scattered in the wind, the vast majority of Fe K$\alpha$ emission must come from distances within $1R_{*}$ from the NS. The eclipse spectrum is successfully modelled through the addition of two photoionized plasmas, one with low ionization ($\log\xi_{\rm 1,cold}=0.36$) and high emission measure ($EM_{\rm 1,cold}\approx 3\times 10^{59}$ cm$^{-3}$) and another with high ionization ($\log\xi_{\rm 2,hot}=3.7$) and low emission measure ($EM_{\rm hot}\approx 2\times 10^{56}$ cm$^{-3}$). Assuming that the cold and hot gas phases are the clumps and the interclump medium of the stellar wind, respectively, and a clump volume filling factor of $\approx [0.04-0.05]$, typical for massive stars, a density contrast between clumps and the interclump medium of $n_{\rm c}/n_{\rm i}\approx 180$ is deduced, in agreement with theoretical expectations and optical-UV observations of massive star winds.

Abstract

Uncertain times require prompt reflexes to survive and this study is a collaborative reflex to better understand uncertainty and navigate through it. The Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic hit hard and interrupted many dimensions of our lives, particularly education. As a response to interruption of education due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this study is a collaborative reaction that narrates the overall view, reflections from the K12 and higher educational landscape, lessons learned and suggestions from a total of 31 countries across the world with a representation of 62.7% of the whole world population. In addition to the value of each case by country, the synthesis of this research suggests that the current practices can be defined as emergency remote education and this practice is different from planned practices such as distance education, online learning or other derivations. Above all, this study points out how social injustice, inequity and the digital divide have been exacerbated during the pandemic and need unique and targeted measures if they are to be addressed. While there are support communities and mechanisms, parents are overburdened between regular daily/professional duties and emerging educational roles, and all parties are experiencing trauma, psychological pressure and anxiety to various degrees, which necessitates a pedagogy of care, affection and empathy. In terms of educational processes, the interruption of education signifies the importance of openness in education and highlights issues that should be taken into consideration such as using alternative assessment and evaluation methods as well as concerns about surveillance, ethics, and data privacy resulting from nearly exclusive dependency on online solutions.

Water stress on crops can severely disrupt crop growth and reduce yields, requiring the accurate and prompt diagnosis of crop water stress, especially in semiarid regions. Infrared thermal imaging cameras are effective tools to monitor the spatial distribution of canopy temperature (Tc), which is the basis of the daily water stress index (DWSI) calculation. This research aimed to evaluate the variability of plant water stress under different soil cover conditions through geostatistical techniques, using detailed thermographic images of Neem canopies in the Brazilian northeastern semiarid region. Two experimental plots were established with Neem cropped under mulch and bare soil conditions. Thermal images of the leaves were taken with a portable thermographic camera and processed using Python language and the OpenCV database. The application of the geostatistical technique enabled stress indicator mapping at the leaf scale, with the spherical and exponential models providing the best fit for both soil cover conditions. The results showed that the highest levels of water stress were observed during the months with the highest air temperatures and no rainfall, especially at the apex of the leaf and close to the central veins, due to a negative water balance. Even under extreme drought conditions, mulching reduced Neem physiological water stress, leading to lower plant water stress, associated with a higher soil moisture content and a negative skewness of temperature distribution. Regarding the mapping of the stress index, the sequential Gaussian simulation method reduced the temperature uncertainty and the variation on the leaf surface. Our findings highlight that mapping the Water Stress Index offers a robust framework to precisely detect stress for agricultural management, as well as soil cover management in semiarid regions. These findings underscore the impact of meteorological and planting conditions on leaf temperature and baseline water stress, which can be valuable for regional water resource managers in diagnosing crop water status more accurately.

Abstract

Cen X-3 is a compact high mass X-ray binary likely powered by Roche lobe overflow. We present a phase-resolved X-ray spectral and timing analysis of two pointed XMM-Newton observations. The first one took place during a normal state of the source, when it has a luminosity $L_{\rm X}\sim 10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$. This observation covered orbital phases $\phi= 0.00-0.37$, i.e. the egress from the eclipse. The egress lightcurve is highly structured, showing distinctive intervals. We argue that different intervals correspond to the emergence of different emitting structures. The lightcurve analysis enables us to estimate the size of such structures around the compact star, the most conspicuous of which has a size $\sim 0.3R_{*}$, of the order of the Roche lobe radius. During the egress, the equivalent width of Fe emission lines, from highly ionized species, decreases as the X-ray continuum grows. On the other hand, the equivalent width of the Fe K$\alpha$ line, from near neutral Fe, strengthens. This line is likely formed due to the X-ray illumination of the accretion stream. The second observation was taken when the source was 10 times X-ray brighter and covered the orbital phases $\phi= 0.36-0.80$. The X-ray lightcurve in the high state shows dips. These dips are not caused by absorption but can be due to instabilities in the accretion stream. The typical dip duration, of about 1000~s, is much longer than the timescale attributed to the accretion of the clumpy stellar wind of the massive donor star, but is similar to the viscous timescale at the inner radius of the accretion disk.

Abstract

High mass X-ray binaries are among the brightest X-ray sources in the Milky Way, as well as in nearby Galaxies. Thanks to their highly variable emissions and complex phenomenology, they have attracted the interest of the high energy astrophysical community since the dawn of X-ray Astronomy. In more recent years, they have challenged our comprehension of physical processes in many more energy bands, ranging from the infrared to very high energies. In this review, we provide a broad but concise summary of the physical processes dominating the emission from high mass X-ray binaries across virtually the whole electromagnetic spectrum. These comprise the interaction of stellar winds with the high gravitational and magnetic fields of compact objects, the behaviour of matter under extreme magnetic and gravity conditions, and the perturbation of the massive star evolutionary processes by presence in a binary system. We highlight the role of the INTEGRAL mission in the discovery of many of the most interesting objects in the high mass X-ray binary class and its contribution in reviving the interest for these sources over the past two decades. We show how the INTEGRAL discoveries have not only contributed to significantly increase the number of high mass X-ray binaries known, thus advancing our understanding of the population as a whole, but also have opened new windows of investigation that stimulated the multi-wavelength approach nowadays common in most astrophysical research fields. We conclude the review by providing an overview of future facilities being planned from the X-ray to the very high energy domain that will hopefully help us in finding an answer to the many questions left open after more than 18 years of INTEGRAL scientific observations., Comment: 61 pages, 22 figures, 1 table, will be published in New Astronomy Reviews

26. Microbial Dynamics and Energetics in Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation for Geotechnical Ground Improvement

Abstract

Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) is a ground improvement approach that has advanced rapidly over the past two decades given its potential application in geotechnical engineering systems. In this process ureolytic MICP uses urea-hydrolyzing bacteria to precipitate calcium carbonate in the soil matrix to rapidly change improve the mechanical properties of the soil while purporting to have fewer environmental impacts than many traditional cement-based ground improvement techniques. The engineering performance gains of the process is relatively well-studied, but far less has been published about the biological processes and phenomena that enable MICP.Ureolytic MICP has two main approaches: bioaugmentation, or the inoculation of the soil with, typically, the Gram-positive bacterium Sporosarcina pasteurii; and biostimulation, which uses sequential selective enrichments within the soil to generate a sufficiently ureolytic community. Presented herein is a conceptual synthesis of both methods from a microbiological perspective, with particular focus given to the current understanding of the factors that govern the effectiveness of biostimulation. A model for enrichment is proposed that includes the negative selectivity imposed by the synergistic effects of ammonia and elevated pH to suppress competitive growth as well as the positive selection based on energy-derived from the hydrolysis of urea to promote the targeted growth of important MICP species.Biostimulated and bioaugmented MICP approaches yielded comparable precipitation in a 1.7 m diameter tank comparison, but the augmented S. pasteurii strain was seemingly outcompeted by native soil bacteria such that it was unable to be recovered one week after inoculation. Instead, other Sporosarcina species were cultured from both tanks with S. soli being the most abundant single species. These isolates manifested a wide range of whole-cell urease kinetics, but still demonstrated ureolytic rates that produce carbonate alkalinity as much as 100 times more rapidly than proposed biocementation processes dependent upon other types of bacterial energy metabolism.The two methods were again compared using molecular approaches in small, less heterogeneous soil columns. Consistent with what was seen at the large-scale, the calcium carbonate precipitation was comparable between both methods. Moreover, the bioaugmented S. pasteurii strain, which was detected three days following the inoculation, was unable to be detected after seven, again an indication of its poor ability to compete with the native bacteria. The microbial communities in both columns were populated by Sporosarcina species (principally S. koreensis, S. luteola, S. ginsengisoli, S. soli, S. saromensis, S. pasteurii, and S. newyorkensis), reinforcing the importance of this genus for ureolytic MICP, though Lysinibacillus sphaericus and Lysinibacillus fusiformis came to prominence in the latter half of the treatments. The emergence of Lysinibacillus was not associated with a particular decrease in ureolytic activity. Instead, ureolytic activity continued to accrete, such that even generous estimates of ureolytic kinetics, when combined with measured suspended cell densities, explained only 10% of the observed ureolytic activity, implying analyses of the pore fluid neglect a substantial portion of the microbial participants.Pure culture studies of the S. pasteurii strain typically used for MICP as well as MICP isolates demonstrate that some members of the genus Sporosarcina are able to generate energy from urea hydrolysis and the chemiosmotic gradients that result. These isolates appear to have the ability, upon repeated transfer of small inocula to fresh media, to indefinitely sustain urea-dependent multiplication under rigorously anoxic conditions. Furthermore, the energy yield of this metabolism is substantial, allowing the anaerobic growth and maintenance of cultures of 107-108 cfu/mL density, with an S. soli isolate having the potential to grow to even higher titers. The geotechnical importance of anaerobic, urea-fueled growth in this genus is emphasized by the demonstration that biostimulated soil columns experience anoxia for 80-90% of a typical treatment, an interval in which alternative modes of bacterial energy generation are ineffective. Modeling based on biomass yield did not exclude cytoplasmic alkalinization as a potential mechanism for energy generation, but ammonium transporters are predicted to be present to boost the efficiency in at least some species. The ability to grow with energy derived from urea could be an essential element to the function of biostimulation but may even play a more common role in urogenital pathogenesis.

This thesis evaluates the adequacy of EU legal capital rules as a mechanism of creditor protection. This role indisputably constitutes the fundamental purpose of the regulation of such doctrine by EU law in the last four decades, since the original Capital Directive until the current codification on Company Law. This thesis questions the effectiveness of legal capital rules for that aim once transposed and incorporated into Member States' national laws and aims to unravel the impact that they have in practice from a law and economics perspective and by means of a comparative and functional analysis. Starting from the premise that providing creditor protection is not only desirable ex post but also ex ante, this thesis analyses legal capital rules alongside other mechanisms - both real and theoretical- and argues that prima facie EU legal capital rules are not fit for that purpose. However, an empirical and comparative study on the implementation of these rules and enforcement of creditor rights in Spain and the UK suggests that Member States' approach has a great impact on the effectiveness and functionality of these rules in practice, and therefore the EU framework does not ultimately determine their adequacy. A comparative analysis between these two Member States demonstratesthat creditor protection is largely provided by -and achieved through- means of directors' liabilities and insolvency rules, and the relevance of legal capital rules per seis rather limited. Nevertheless, legal capital rules have a higher impact and functionality in Spain than in the UK, namely due to Recapitalise or Liquidate rules (ROL) and legal reserves. This thesis advocates that a system containing ROL based on adequate capitalisation and assisted by the control of solvency tests and related directors' liabilities together would provide a more comprehensive regulatory package than the framework provided by the EU Directive.

Abstract

We are interested in survival analysis of hemodialysis patients for whom several biomarkers are recorded over time. Motivated by this challenging problem, we propose a general framework for multivariate joint longitudinal-survival modeling that can be used to examine the association between several longitudinally recorded covariates and a time-to-event endpoint. Our method allows for simultaneous modeling of longitudinal covariates by taking their correlation into account. This leads to a more efficient method for modeling their trajectories over time, and hence, it can better capture their relationship to the survival outcomes.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to characterize the counterpart to the INTEGRAL High Mass X-ray Binary candidate IGR J19294+1816 so as to establish its true nature. We obtained H band spectra of the selected counterpart acquired with the NICS instrument mounted on the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) 3.5-m telescope which represents the first infrared spectrum ever taken of this source. We complement the spectral analysis with infrared photometry from UKIDSS, 2MASS, WISE and NEOWISE databases. We classify the mass donor as a Be star. Subsequently, we compute its distance by properly taking into account the contamination produced by the circumstellar envelope. The findings indicate that IGR J19294+1816 is a transient source with a B1Ve donor at a distance of $d = 11 \pm 1$ kpc, and luminosities of the order of $10^{36-37}$ erg s$^{-1}$, displaying the typical behaviour of a Be X-ray binary., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted to be published in MNRAS

Abstract

We review some of the most recent approaches to colorize gray-scale images using deep learning methods. Inspired by these, we propose a model which combines a deep Convolutional Neural Network trained from scratch with high-level features extracted from the Inception-ResNet-v2 pre-trained model. Thanks to its fully convolutional architecture, our encoder-decoder model can process images of any size and aspect ratio. Other than presenting the training results, we assess the "public acceptance" of the generated images by means of a user study.
