Search

Existing Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) generally focus on only a few regions and languages. As LMMs continue to improve, it is increasingly important to ensure they understand cultural contexts, respect local sensitivities, and support low-resource languages, all while effectively integrating corresponding visual cues. In pursuit of culturally diverse global multimodal models, our proposed All Languages Matter Benchmark (ALM-bench) represents the largest and most comprehensive effort to date for evaluating LMMs across 100 languages. ALM-bench challenges existing models by testing their ability to understand and reason about culturally diverse images paired with text in various languages, including many low-resource languages traditionally underrepresented in LMM research. The benchmark offers a robust and nuanced evaluation framework featuring various question formats, including true/false, multiple choice, and open-ended questions, which are further divided into short and long-answer categories. ALM-bench design ensures a comprehensive assessment of a model's ability to handle varied levels of difficulty in visual and linguistic reasoning. To capture the rich tapestry of global cultures, ALM-bench carefully curates content from 13 distinct cultural aspects, ranging from traditions and rituals to famous personalities and celebrations. Through this, ALM-bench not only provides a rigorous testing ground for state-of-the-art open and closed-source LMMs but also highlights the importance of cultural and linguistic inclusivity, encouraging the development of models that can serve diverse global populations effectively. Galaxies at redshift $z\sim 1-2$ display high star formation rates (SFRs) with elevated cold gas fractions and column densities. Simulating a self-regulated ISM in a hydrodynamical, self-consistent context, has proven challenging due to strong outflows triggered by supernova (SN) feedback. At sufficiently high gas column densities, and in the absence of magnetic fields, these outflows prevent a quasi-steady disk from forming at all. To this end, we present GHOSDT, a suite of magneto-hydrodynamical simulations that implement ISM physics at high resolution. We demonstrate the importance of magnetic pressure in the stabilization of gas-rich star-forming disks. We show that a relation between the magnetic field and gas surface density emerges naturally from our simulations. We argue that the magnetic field in the dense, star-forming gas, may be set by the SN-driven turbulent gas motions. When compared to pure hydrodynamical runs, we find that the inclusion of magnetic fields increases the cold gas fraction and reduces the disc scale height, both by up to a factor of $\sim 2$, and reduces the star formation burstiness. In dense ($n>100\;\rm{cm}^{-3}$) gas, we find steady-state magnetic field strengths of 10--40 $\mu$G, comparable to those observed in molecular clouds. Finally, we demonstrate that our simulation framework is consistent with the Ostriker & Kim (2022) Pressure Regulated Feedback Modulated Theory of star formation and stellar Feedback., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

Spatially-resolved emission line kinematics are invaluable to investigating fundamental galaxy properties and have become increasingly accessible for galaxies at $z\gtrsim0.5$ through sensitive near-infrared imaging spectroscopy and millimeter interferometry. Kinematic modeling is at the core of the analysis and interpretation of such data sets, which at high-z present challenges due to lower signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) and resolution compared to data of local galaxies. We present and test the 3D fitting functionality of DysmalPy, examining how well it recovers intrinsic disk rotation velocity and velocity dispersion, using a large suite of axisymmetric models, covering a range of galaxy properties and observational parameters typical of $z\sim1$-$3$ star-forming galaxies. We also compare DysmalPy's recovery performance to that of two other commonly used codes, GalPak3D and 3DBarolo, which we use in turn to create additional sets of models to benchmark DysmalPy. Over the ranges of S/N, resolution, mass, and velocity dispersion explored, the rotation velocity is accurately recovered by all tools. The velocity dispersion is recovered well at high S/N, but the impact of methodology differences is more apparent. In particular, template differences for parametric tools and S/N sensitivity for the non-parametric tool can lead to differences up to a factor of 2. Our tests highlight and the importance of deep, high-resolution data and the need for careful consideration of: (1) the choice of priors (parametric approaches), (2) the masking (all approaches) and, more generally, evaluating the suitability of each approach to the specific data at hand. The escape of LyC photons emitted by massive stars from the dense interstellar medium of galaxies is one of the most significant bottlenecks for cosmological reionization. The escape fraction shows significant scatter between galaxies, and anisotropic, spatial variation within them, motivating further study of the underlying physical factors responsible for these trends. We perform numerical radiation hydrodynamic simulations of idealized clouds with different gas surface densities (compactness) $\Sigma \sim 10^2$--$10^5 \, M_{\odot} \rm{pc}^{-2}$, meant to emulate star cluster-forming clumps ranging from conditions typical of the local Universe to the high ISM-pressure conditions more frequently encountered at high redshift. Our results indicate that dense compact star clusters with $\Sigma \gtrsim 10^4 \, M_{\odot} \rm{pc}^{-2}$ efficiently leak LyC photons, with cloud-scale luminosity-weighted average escape fractions $\gtrsim 80\%$ as opposed to $\lesssim 10\%$ for $\Sigma \sim 100 \, M_{\odot} \rm{pc}^{-2}$. This occurs due to higher star formation efficiencies and shorter dynamical timescales at higher $\Sigma$; the former results in higher intrinsic LyC emission, and the latter implies rapid evolution, with a burst of star formation followed by rapid gas dispersal, permitting high LyC escape well before the intrinsic LyC emission of stellar populations drop ($\sim 4 \, \mathrm{Myr}$). LyC escape in dense clouds is primarily facilitated by highly ionized outflows driven by radiation pressure on dust with velocities $ \sim 3$ times the cloud escape velocity. We also vary the (assumed) dust abundances ($Z_{\rm{d}}$) and find a very mild increase ($\sim 10%$) in the escape fraction for $\sim 100$ lower $Z_{\mathrm{d}}$. Our results suggest a scenario in which localized compact bursts of star formation in galaxies are disproportionately productive sites of LyC leakage., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures. Molecular clouds (MCs) are the birthplaces of new stars in galaxies. A key component of MCs are photodissociation regions (PDRs), where far-ultraviolet radiation plays a crucial role in determining the gas's physical and chemical state. Traditional PDR models assume chemical steady state (CSS), where the rates of H$_2$ formation and photodissociation are balanced. However, real MCs are dynamic and can be out of CSS. In this study, we demonstrate that combining H$_2$ emission lines observed in the far-ultraviolet or infrared with column density observations can be used to derive the rates of H$_2$ formation and photodissociation. We derive analytical formulae that relate these rates to observable quantities, which we validate using synthetic H$_2$ line emission maps derived from the SILCC-Zoom hydrodynamical simulation. Our method estimates integrated H$_2$ formation and dissociation rates to within 29\% accuracy. Our simulations cover a wide dynamic range in H$_2$ formation and photodissociation rates, showing significant deviations from CSS, with 74\% of the MC's mass deviating from CSS by a factor greater than 2. Our analytical formulae can effectively distinguish between regions in and out of CSS. We present a set of controlled hydrodynamical simulations to study the effects of strong galactic outflows on the density and temperature structures, and associated X-ray signatures, of extra-planar and circumgalactic gas. We consider three initial state models, isothermal, isentropic, and rotating cooling-flow, for the hot circumgalactic medium (CGM) into which the outflows are driven. The energy sources are either stellar winds and supernovae, or active galactic nuclei. We consider energy injection rates in the range $10^{40} < \dot{E}_{\rm inj} <10^{44.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and compute the time-dependent soft X-ray (0.5-2 keV) surface brightness. For $\dot{E}_{\rm inj} \gtrsim 10^{41} - 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, with the exact threshold depending on the initial CGM state, the X-ray response is dominated by dense hot gas in the forward shock that eventually fades into the CGM as a sound wave. The shock surrounds an inner hot bubble leading to a radial flattening of the X-ray surface brightness. For lower energy injection rates, the X-ray surface brightness of the initial CGM state is almost unaffected. We analyze measurements of the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect arising in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of $L^*$ galaxies, reported by Bregman et al. 2022 and Das et al. 2023. In our analysis we use the Faerman et al. 2017 and Faerman et al. 2020 CGM models, a new power-law model (PLM), and the TNG100 simulation. For a given $M_{\rm vir}$, our PLM has four parameters; the fraction, $f_{\rm hCGM}$, of the halo baryon mass in hot CGM gas, the ratio, $\phi_T$, of the actual gas temperature at the virial radius to the virial temperature, and the power-law indicies, $a_{P,{\rm th}}$ and $a_n$ for the thermal electron pressure and the hydrogen nucleon density. The B+22 Compton-$y$ profile implies steep electron pressure slopes ($a_{P,{\rm th}}\simeq 2$). For isothermal conditions the temperature is at least $1.1\times 10^6$ K, with a hot CGM gas mass of up to $3.5\times 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ for a virial mass of $2.75\times 10^{12}$ M$_\odot$. However, if isothermal the gas must be expanding out of the halos. An isentropic equation of state is favored for which hydrostatic equilibrium is possible. The B+22 and D+23 results are consistent with each other and with recent (0.5-2 keV) CGM X-ray observations by Zhang et al. 2024 of Milky Way mass systems. For $M_{\rm vir}\simeq 3\times 10^{12}$ M$_\odot$, the scaled Compton pressure integrals, $E(z)^{-2/3}Y_{500}/M_{\rm vir,12}^{5/3}$, lie in the narrow range, $2.5\times 10^{-4}$ to $5.0\times 10^{-4}$ kpc$^2$, for all three sets of observations. TNG100 underpredicts the tSZ parameters by factors $\sim 0.5$ dex for the $L^*$ galaxies, suggesting that the feedback strengths and CGM gas losses are overestimated in the simulated halos at these mass scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 29 pages, 17 figures

Simulations of photochemical reaction dynamics have been a challenge to the theoretical chemistry community for some time. In an effort to determine the predictive character of current approaches, we predict the results of an upcoming ultrafast diffraction experiment on the photodynamics of cyclobutanone after excitation to the lowest lying Rydberg state (S$_2$). A picosecond of nonadiabatic dynamics is described with ab initio multiple spawning. We use both time dependent density functional theory and equation-of-motion coupled cluster for the underlying electronic structure theory. We find that the lifetime of the S$_2$ state is more than a picosecond (with both TDDFT and EOM-CCSD). The predicted UED spectrum exhibits numerous structural features, but weak time dependence over the course of the simulations.

Molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) formation and dissociation are key processes that drive the gas lifecycle in galaxies. Using the SImulating the LifeCycle of Molecular Clouds (SILCC) zoom-in simulation suite, we explore the utility of future observations of H$_2$ dissociation and formation for tracking the lifecycle of molecular clouds. The simulations used in this work include non-equilibrium H$_2$ formation, stellar radiation, sink particles, and turbulence. We find that, at early times in the cloud evolution, H$_2$ formation rapidly outpaces dissociation and molecular clouds build their mass from the atomic reservoir in their environment. Rapid H$_2$ formation is also associated with a higher early star formation rate. For the clouds studied here, H$_2$ is strongly out of chemical equilibrium during the early stages of cloud formation but settles into a bursty chemical steady-state about 2 Myrs after the first stars form. At the latest stage of cloud evolution, dissociation outweighs formation and the clouds enter a dispersal phase. We discuss how theories for the molecular cloud lifecycle and the star formation efficiency may be distinguished with observational measurements of H$_2$ fluorescence with a space-based high-resolution FUV spectrometer, such as the proposed Hyperion and Eos NASA Explorer missions. Such missions would enable measurements of the H$_2$ dissociation and formation rates, which we demonstrate can be connected to different phases in a molecular cloud's star-forming life, including cloud building, rapidly star-forming, H$_2$ chemical equilibrium, and cloud destruction., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, comments welcome

Sparse arrays enable resolving more direction of arrivals (DoAs) than antenna elements using non-uniform arrays. This is typically achieved by reconstructing the covariance of a virtual large uniform linear array (ULA), which is then processed by subspace DoA estimators. However, these method assume that the signals are non-coherent and the array is calibrated; the latter often challenging to achieve in sparse arrays, where one cannot access the virtual array elements. In this work, we propose Sparse-SubspaceNet, which leverages deep learning to enable subspace-based DoA recovery from sparse miscallibrated arrays with coherent sources. Sparse- SubspaceNet utilizes a dedicated deep network to learn from data how to compute a surrogate virtual array covariance that is divisible into distinguishable subspaces. By doing so, we learn to cope with coherent sources and miscalibrated sparse arrays, while preserving the interpretability and the suitability of model-based subspace DoA estimators., Comment: Project is still under work

We extend the analytic theory presented by Sternberg et al. (2014) and Bialy & Sternberg (2016) for the production of atomic hydrogen (HI) via FUV photodissociation at the boundaries of dense interstellar molecular (H$_2$) clouds, to also include the effects of penetrating (low-energy) cosmic-rays for the growth of the total HI column densities. We compute the steady-state abundances of the HI and H$_2$ in one-dimensional gas slabs in which the FUV photodissociation rates are reduced by depth-dependent H$_2$ self-shielding and dust absorption, and in which the cosmic-ray ionization rates are either constant or reduced by transport effects. The solutions for the HI and H$_2$ density profiles and the integrated HI columns, depend primarily on the ratios $I_{\rm UV}/Rn$ and $\zeta/Rn$, where $I_{\rm UV}$ is the intensity of the photodissociating FUV field, $\zeta$ is the H$_2$ cosmic-ray ionization rate, $n$ is the hydrogen gas density, and $R$ is the dust-surface H$_2$ formation rate coefficient. We present computations for a wide range of FUV field strengths, cosmic-ray ionization rates, and dust-to-gas ratios. We develop analytic expressions for the growth of the HI column densities. For Galactic giant molecular clouds (GMCs) with multiphased (warm/cold) HI envelopes, the interior cosmic-ray zones will dominate the production of the HI only if $\zeta \gtrsim 4.5\times 10^{-16} \times (M_{\rm GMC}/10^6 \ M_{\odot})^{-1/2}$~s$^{-1}$, where $M_{\rm GMC}$ is the GMC mass, and including attenuation of the cosmic-ray fluxes. For most Galactic GMCs and conditions, FUV photodissociation dominates over cosmic-ray ionization for the production of the HI column densities. The [CII] 157.74 $\mu$m fine structure transition is one of the brightest and most well-studied emission lines in the far-infrared (FIR), produced in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies. We study its properties in sub-pc resolution hydrodynamical simulations for an ISM patch with gas surface density of $\Sigma_{\rm{g}}=10\;M_{\odot}\;\rm{pc}^{-2}$, coupled with time-dependent chemistry, far-ultraviolet (FUV) dust and gas shielding, star formation, photoionization and supernova (SN) feedback, and full line-radiative transfer. We find a [CII]-to-H$_2$ conversion factor that scales weakly with metallicity $X_{\rm{[CII]}}=6.31\times 10^{19} \;Z^{\prime\;0.17}\; \rm{cm}^{-2}\;(\rm{K}\;\rm{km}\;\rm{s}^{-1})^{-1}$, where $Z^{\prime}$ is the normalized metallicity relative to solar. {The majority of [CII] originates from atomic gas with hydrogen number density $n\sim 10~{\rm cm^{-3}}$.} The [CII] line intensity positively correlates with the star formation rate (SFR), with a normalization factor that scales linearly with metallicity. We find that this is broadly consistent with $z\sim0$ observations. As such, [CII] is a good SFR tracer even in metal-poor environments where molecular lines might be undetectable. Resolving the clumpy structure of the dense ($n=10-10^3\;\rm{cm}^{-3}$) interstellar medium (ISM) is important as it dominates [CII] 157.74 $\mu$m emission. We compare our full radiative transfer computation with the optically-thin limit and find that the [CII] line becomes marginally optically thick only at super-solar metallicity for our assumed gas surface density., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Gold is one of the most inert metals, forming very few compounds, some with rather interesting properties, and only two of them currently known to be superconducting under certain conditions (AuTe$_2$ and SrAuSi$_3$). Compounds of another noble element, Ag, are also relatively rare, and very few of them are superconducting. Finding new superconducting materials containing gold (and silver) is a challenge - especially having in mind that the best high-$T_c$ superconductors at normal conditions are based upon their rather close ''relative'', Cu. Here we report combined X-ray diffraction, Raman, and resistivity measurements, as well as first-principles calculations, to explore the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the properties of the sylvanite mineral, AuAgTe$_4$. Our experimental results, supported by density functional theory, reveal a structural phase transition at $\sim$5 GPa from a monoclinic $P2/c$ to $P2/m$ phase, resulting in almost identical coordinations of Au and Ag ions, with rather uniform interatomic distances. Further, resistivity measurements show the onset of superconductivity at $\sim$1.5 GPa in the $P2/c$ phase, followed by a linear increase of $T_c$ up to the phase transition, with a maximum in the $P2/m$ phase, and a gradual decrease afterwards. Our calculations indicate phonon-mediated superconductivity, with the electron-phonon coupling coming predominantly from the low-energy phonon modes. Thus, along with the discovery of a new superconducting compound of gold/silver, our results advance understanding of the mechanism of the superconductivity in Au-containing compounds, which may pave the way to the discovery of novel ones.

Nearby dwarf irregular galaxies are ideal laboratories for studying the interstellar medium (ISM) at low metallicity, which is expected to be common for galaxies at very high redshift being observed by the James Webb Space Telescope. We present the first high-resolution ($\sim 0.2$~pc) hydrodynamical simulations of an isolated low-metallicity ($0.1~Z_\odot$) dwarf galaxy coupled with a time-dependent chemistry network and a dust evolution model where dust is locally produced and destroyed by various processes. To accurately model carbon monoxide (CO), we post-process the simulations with a detailed chemistry network including the time-dependent effect of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$). Our model successfully reproduces the observed star formation rate and CO(1-0) luminosity ($L_{\rm CO}$). We find that dust growth in dense gas is required to reproduce the observed $L_{\rm CO}$ as otherwise CO would be completely photodissociated. In contrast, the H$_2$ abundance is extremely small and is insensitive to dust growth, leading to a CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor that is only slightly higher than the Milky Way value despite the low metallicity. An observationally inferred dust-to-gas ratio is thus underestimated if adopting the metallicity-dependent CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor. The newly-produced dust in dense gas mixes with the ISM through supernova feedback without being completely destroyed by sputtering, which leads to galactic outflows 20% - 50% dustier than the ISM, providing a possible source for intergalactic dust., Comment: ApJ accepted. 19 pages, 10 figures

We present Hyperion, a mission concept recently proposed to the December 2021 NASA Medium Explorer announcement of opportunity. Hyperion explores the formation and destruction of molecular clouds and planet-forming disks in nearby star-forming regions of the Milky Way. It does this using long-slit, high-resolution spectroscopy of emission from fluorescing molecular hydrogen, which is a powerful far-ultraviolet (FUV) diagnostic. Molecular hydrogen (H2) is the most abundant molecule in the universe and a key ingredient for star and planet formation, but is typically not observed directly because its symmetric atomic structure and lack of a dipole moment mean there are no spectral lines at visible wavelengths and few in the infrared. Hyperion uses molecular hydrogen's wealth of FUV emission lines to achieve three science objectives: (1) determining how star formation is related to molecular hydrogen formation and destruction at the boundaries of molecular clouds; (2) determining how quickly and by what process massive star feedback disperses molecular clouds; and (3) determining the mechanism driving the evolution of planet-forming disks around young solar-analog stars. Hyperion conducts this science using a straightforward, highly-efficient, single-channel instrument design. Hyperion's instrument consists of a 48 cm primary mirror, with an f/5 focal ratio. The spectrometer has two modes, both covering 138.5-161.5 nm bandpasses. A low resolution mode has a spectral resolution of R>10,000 with a slit length of 65 arcmin, while the high resolution mode has a spectral resolution of R>50,000 over a slit length of 5 armin. Hyperion occupies a 2 week long, high-earth, Lunar resonance TESS-like orbit, and conducts 2 weeks of planned observations per orbit, with time for downlinks and calibrations. Model agnostic feature attribution algorithms (such as SHAP and LIME) are ubiquitous techniques for explaining the decisions of complex classification models, such as deep neural networks. However, since complex classification models produce superior performance when trained on low-level (or encoded) features, in many cases, the explanations generated by these algorithms are neither interpretable nor usable by humans. Methods proposed in recent studies that support the generation of human-interpretable explanations are impractical, because they require a fully invertible transformation function that maps the model's input features to the human-interpretable features. In this work, we introduce Latent SHAP, a black-box feature attribution framework that provides human-interpretable explanations, without the requirement for a fully invertible transformation function. We demonstrate Latent SHAP's effectiveness using (1) a controlled experiment where invertible transformation functions are available, which enables robust quantitative evaluation of our method, and (2) celebrity attractiveness classification (using the CelebA dataset) where invertible transformation functions are not available, which enables thorough qualitative evaluation of our method.

We present hydrodynamical simulations of galactic winds from star-forming galaxies including non-equilibrium ionization and frequency-dependent radiative transfer, processes that have remained largely unaccounted for in galactic wind studies. We consider radiation from massive stars, the metagalactic UV/X-ray background, and the self-radiation of the supernovae heated gas. We compare our results to classical galactic wind solutions and show the importance of our newly included physical processes toward observations of ions such as O III, O VI, O VII and O VIII plus the observable soft X-ray spectra. Non-equilibrium ionization is reflected in over-ionized gas compared to equilibrium solutions, leading to much enhanced column densities of highly ionized species. The wind produces excess soft X-ray ($E\gtrsim 100$ eV) radiation that is several orders of magnitude higher compared to the metagalactic background. This radiation ionizes the higher ions (such as O VII) somewhat, but affects the lower ions (such as O III) significantly. We predict that the observable X-ray spectra should contain the signatures of such non-equilibrium effects, especially in X-ray lines such as O VII and O VIII. Simple estimates suggest that both the temperature and density of the winds may be overestimated by factors of a few to almost 2 orders of magnitude using simple equilibrium models. We conclude that both the non-equilibrium ionization and the radiation from the wind itself need to be considered for proper modeling of the optical/UV/X-ray emitting plasma in galactic winds., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. Giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are the sites of star formation and stellar feedback in galaxies. Their properties set the initial conditions for star formation and their lifecycles determine how feedback regulates galaxy evolution. In recent years, the advent of high-resolution telescopes has enabled systematic GMC-scale studies of the molecular interstellar medium in nearby galaxies, now covering a wide range of physical conditions and allowing for the first studies of how GMC properties depend on galactic environment. These observational developments have been accompanied by numerical simulations of improving resolution that are increasingly accurately accounting for the effects of the galactic-scale environment on GMCs, while simultaneously improving the treatment of the small-scale processes of star-formation and stellar feedback within them. The combination of these recent developments has greatly improved our understanding of the formation, evolution, and destruction of GMCs. We study the CO(1-0)-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($X_{\rm CO}$) and the line ratio of CO(2-1)-to-CO(1-0) ($R_{21}$) across a wide range of metallicity ($0.1 \leq Z/Z_\odot \leq 3$) in high-resolution (~0.2 pc) hydrodynamical simulations of a self-regulated multiphase interstellar medium. We construct synthetic CO emission maps via radiative transfer and systematically vary the "observational" beam size to quantify the scale dependence. We find that the kpc-scale $X_{\rm CO}$ can be over-estimated at low $Z$ if assuming steady-state chemistry or assuming that the star-forming gas is H$_2$-dominated. On parsec scales, $X_{\rm CO}$ varies by orders of magnitude from place to place, primarily driven by the transition from atomic carbon to CO. The pc-scale $X_{\rm CO}$ drops to the Milky Way value of $2\times 10^{20}\ {\rm cm^{-2}~(K~km~s^{-1})^{-1}}$ once dust shielding becomes effective, independent of $Z$. The CO lines become increasingly optically thin at lower $Z$, leading to a higher $R_{21}$. Most cloud area is filled by diffuse gas with high $X_{\rm CO}$ and low $R_{21}$, while most CO emission originates from dense gas with low $X_{\rm CO}$ and high $R_{21}$. Adopting a constant $X_{\rm CO}$ strongly over- (under-)estimates H$_2$ in dense (diffuse) gas. The line intensity negatively (positively) correlates with $X_{\rm CO}$ ($R_{21}$) as it is a proxy of column density (volume density). On large scales, $X_{\rm CO}$ and $R_{21}$ are dictated by beam averaging, and they are naturally biased towards values in dense gas. Our predicted $X_{\rm CO}$ is a multivariate function of $Z$, line intensity, and beam size, which can be used to more accurately infer the H$_2$ mass., Comment: Published in ApJ (typos in the abstract fixed). We develop a measurement operator formalism to handle quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement induced entanglement generation between two atomic gases. We first derive how the QND entangling scheme reduces to a positive operator-valued measure, and consider its limiting case when it can be used to construct a projection operator that collapses the state to a total spin projection state. We then analyze how a stroboscopic sequence of such projections made in the x and z basis evolves the initial wave function. Such a sequence of QND projections can enhance the entanglement between the atomic ensembles and makes the state converge towards a highly entangled state. We show several mathematical identities which greatly simplify the state evolution in the projection sequence and allow one to derive the exact state in a highly efficient manner. Our formalism does not use the Holstein-Primakoff approximation as is conventionally done, and treats the spins of the atomic gases in an exact way., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

We combine the Santa-Cruz Semi-Analytic Model (SAM) for galaxy formation and evolution with the circumgalactic medium (CGM) model presented in Faerman et al. (2020) to explore the CGM properties of $L^{*}$ galaxies. We use the SAM to generate a sample of galaxies with halo masses similar to the Milky Way (MW) halo, $M_{\rm vir} \approx 10^{12}~{\rm M_{sun}}$, and find that the CGM mass and mean metallicity in the sample are correlated. We use the CGM masses and metallicities of the SAM galaxies as inputs for the FSM20 model, and vary the amount of non-thermal support. The density profiles in our models can be approximated by power-law functions with slopes in the range of $0.75 < a_n < 1.25$, with higher non-thermal pressure resulting in flatter distributions. We explore how the gas pressure, dispersion measure, OVI-OVIII column densities, and cooling rates behave with the gas distribution and total mass. We show that for CGM masses below $\sim 3 \times 10^{10}~{\rm M_{sun}}$, photoionization has a significant effect on the column densities of OVI and OVIII. The combination of different MW CGM observations favors models with similar fractions in thermal pressure, magnetic fields/cosmic rays, and turbulent support, and with $M_{\rm gas} \sim 3-10 \times 10^{10}~{\rm M_{sun}}$. The MW OVI column requires $t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm dyn} \sim 4$, independent of the gas distribution. The AGN jet-driven heating rates in the SAM are enough to offset the CGM cooling, although exact balance is not required in star-forming galaxies. Recent searches for the hosts of high-redshift ($z \sim 4$) damped Ly$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) have detected bright galaxies at distances of tens of kpc from the DLA. Using the FIRE-2 cosmological zoom simulations, we argue that these relatively large distances are due to a predominantly cool and neutral inner circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding high-redshift galaxies. The inner CGM is cool because of the short cooling time of hot gas in $\lesssim10^{12}$ Msun halos, which implies that accretion and feedback energy are radiated quickly, while it is neutral due to the high volume densities and column densities at high redshift which shield cool gas from photoionization. Our analysis predicts large DLA covering factors ($\gtrsim50\%$) out to impact parameters $\sim0.3((1 + z)/5)^{3/2}\ R_{\rm vir}$ from the central galaxies at $z > 1$, equivalent to a physical distance of $\sim 21 M_{12}^{1/3} ((1 + z)/5)^{1/2}$ kpc ($R_{\rm vir}$ and $M_{12}$ are the halo virial radius and mass in units of $10^{12}$ Msun, respectively). This implies that DLA covering factors at $z \sim 4$ may be comparable to unity out to a distance $\sim 10$ times larger than stellar half-mass radii. A predominantly neutral inner CGM in the early universe suggests that its mass and metallicity can be directly constrained by CGM absorption surveys, without resorting to large ionization corrections as required for ionized CGM., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We present numerical computations and analysis of atomic to molecular (HI-to-H$_2$) transitions in cool ($\sim$100 K) low-metallicity dust-free (primordial) gas, in which molecule formation occurs via cosmic-ray driven negative ion chemistry, and removal is by a combination of far-UV photodissociation and cosmic-ray ionization and dissociation. For any gas temperature, the behavior depends on the ratio of the Lyman-Werner (LW) band FUV intensity to gas density, $I_{\rm LW}/n$, and the ratio of the cosmic-ray ionization rate to the gas density, $\zeta/n$. We present sets of HI-to-H$_2$ abundance profiles for a wide range of $\zeta/n$ and $I_{\rm LW}/n$, for dust-free gas. We determine the conditions for which H$_2$ absorption line self-shielding in optically thick clouds enables a transition from atomic to molecular form for ionization-driven chemistry. We also examine the effects of cosmic-ray energy losses on the atomic and molecular density profiles and transition points. For a unit Galactic interstellar FUV field intensity ($I_{\rm LW}=1$) with LW flux $2.07\times 10^7$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, and a uniform cosmic-ray ionization rate $\zeta=10^{-16}$ s$^{-1}$, an HI-to-H$_2$ transition occurs at a total hydrogen gas column density of $4\times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$, within $3\times 10^7$ yr, for a gas volume density of $n=10^6$ cm$^{-3}$ at 100 K. For these parameters, the dust-free limit obtains for a dust-to-gas ratio Z$^\prime_d \lesssim 10^{-5}$, which may be reached for overall metallicities $Z^\prime\lesssim 0.01$ relative to Galactic solar values., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ
