In this paper, the concordance of Morse functions is defined, and a necessary and sufficient condition for given two Morse functions to be concordant is presented and is compared with the cobordism criterion. Cobordism of Morse functions on smooth closed manifolds is an equivalence relation defined by using cobordisms of manifolds and fold maps. Given two Morse functions, it is important to decide whether they are cobordant or not, and this problem was first solved for surfaces and then for manifolds of general dimensions by Ikegami-Saeki, Kalm\'ar, and Ikegami. On the other hand, for Morse functions on the same manifold, we can consider a stronger equivalence relation called concordance., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Sufficiency of jets is a very important notion introduced by Rene Thom in order to establish the structural stability theory. The criteria for some sufficiency of jets are known as the Kuo condition and Thom type inequality, which are defined using the Kuo quantity and Thom quantity. Therefore these quantities are meaningful. In this paper we show the equivalence of Kuo and Thom quantities. Given a null-cobordant oriented framed link $L$ in a closed oriented $3$--manifold $M$, we determine those links in $M \setminus L$ which can be realized as the singular point set of a generic map $M \to \mathbb{R}^2$ that has $L$ as an oriented framed regular fiber. Then, we study the linking behavior between the singular point set and regular fibers for generic maps of $M$ into $\mathbb{R}^2$., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We consider the problems of sufficiency of jets relative to a given closed set. In the non-relative case, criteria for r-jets to be V-sufficient and C^0-sufficient in C^r mappings or C^{r+1} mappings have been obtained. In particular, it is shown that V-sufficiency and C^0-sufficiency in C^r functions or C^{r+1} functions are equivalent. In this paper we discuss characterisations of V-sufficiency and C^0-sufficiency in the relative case, corresponding to the above non-relative results. Applying the results obtained in the relative case, we construct examples of polynomial functions whose relative r-jets are V-sufficient in C^r functions and C^{r+1} functions but not C^0-sufficient in C^r functions and C^{r+1} functions, respectively. We define an equivalence relation called A-isotopy between finitely determined map-germs, which is a strengthened version of A-equivalence. We consider the number of A-isotopy classes of equidimensional Morin singularities, and some other well-known low-dimensional singularities. A singular point of a smooth map F: M -> N of manifolds is a point in M at which the rank of the differential dF is less than the minimum of dimensions of M and N. The classical invariant of the set S of singular points of F of a given type is defined by taking the fundamental class [\bar{S}]\in H_*(M) of the closure of S. We introduce and study new invariants of singular sets for which the classical invariants may not be defined, i.e., for which \bar{S} may not possess the fundamental class. The simplest new invariant is defined by carefully choosing the fundamental class of the intersection of \bar{S} and its slight perturbation in M. Surprisingly, for certain singularity types such an invariant is well-define (and not trivial) despite the fact that \bar{S} does not possess the fundamental class. We determine new invariants for maps with Morin singularities---i.e., singularities of types A_k for k>0 in the ADE-classification of simple singularities by Dynkin diagrams---and, as an application, show that these invariants together with generalized Miller-Morita-Mumford classes form a commutative graded algebra of characteristic classes that completely determine the cobordism groups of maps with at most A_k-singularities for each k>0., Comment: 64 pages

Given a closed manifold N and a self-indexing Morse function f: N --> R with up to four distinct Morse indices, we construct a symplectic Lefschetz fibration pi: E --> C which models the complexification of f on the disk cotangent bundle, f_C : D(T*N) --> C, when f is real analytic. By construction, pi: E --> C comes with an explicit regular fiber M and vanishing spheres V_1,...,V_m in M, one for each critical point of f. Our main result is that (E,pi) is a good model for the complexification (D(T*N),f_C) in the sense that N embeds in E as an exact Lagrangian submanifold, and in addition, pi|N = f and E is homotopy equivalent to N. Let W be a finite reflection group acting orthogonally on R^n, P be the Chevalley polynomial mapping determined by an integrity basis of the algebra of W-invariant polynomials, and h be the highest degree of the coordinate polynomials in P.There exists a linear mapping from (C^r(R^n))^W to C^[r/h](R^n), f\mapsto F such that f=F \circ P, continuous for the natural Fr\'echet topologies. A general counterexample shows that this result is the best possible. The proof uses techniques of division by linear forms and a study of compensation phenomenons. In this paper, we discuss the recognition problem for A_k-type singularities on wave fronts. We give computable and simple criteria of these singularities, which will play a fundamental role in generalizing the authors' previous work "the geometry of fronts" for surfaces. The crucial point to prove our criteria for A_k-singularities is to introduce a suitable parametrization of the singularities called the "k-th KRSUY-coordinates". Using them, we can directly construct a versal unfolding for a given singularity. As an application, we prove that a given nondegenerate singular point p on a real (resp. complex) hypersurface (as a wave front) in R^{n+1} (resp. C^{n+1}) is differentiably (resp. holomorphically) right-left equivalent to the A_{k+1}-type singular point if and only if the linear projection of the singular set around p into a generic hyperplane R^n (resp. C^n) is right-left equivalent to the A_k-type singular point in R^n (resp. C^{n}). Moreover, we show that the restriction of a C-infinity-map f:R^n --> R^n to its Morin singular set gives a wave front consisting of only A_k-type singularities. Furthermore, we shall give a relationship between the normal curvature map and the zig-zag numbers (the Maslov indices) of wave fronts., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

Sz\H ucs proved in 2000 that the $r$-tuple-point manifold of a generic immersion is cobordant to the $\Sigma^{1_{r-1}}$-point manifold of its generic projection. Here we slightly extend this by showing that the natural mappings of these manifolds are bordant to each other. Maps between manifolds $M^m\to N^{m+\ell}$ ($\ell>0$) have multiple points, and more generally, multisingularities. The closure of the set of points where the map has a particular multisingularity is called the multisingularity locus. There are universal relations among the cohomology classes represented by multisingularity loci, and the characteristic classes of the manifolds. These relations include the celebrated Thom polynomials of monosingularities. For multisingularities, however, only the form of these relations is clear in general (due to Kazarian), the concrete polynomials occurring in the relations are much less known. In the present paper we prove the first general such relation outside the region of Morin-maps: the general quadruple point formula. We apply this formula in enumerative geometry by computing the number of 4-secant linear spaces to smooth projective varieties. Some other multisingularity formulas are also studied, namely 5, 6, 7 tuple point formulas, and one corresponding to $\Sigma^2\Sigma^0$ multisingularities., Comment: 23 pages

In the first part of the paper we construct a ring structure on the rational cobordism classes of Morin maps (i. e. smooth generic maps of corank 1). We show that associating to a Morin map its singular strata defines a ring homomorphism to $\Omega_* \otimes \Q$, the rational oriented cobordism ring. This is proved by analyzing multiple-point sets of product immersion. Using these homomorphisms we are able to identify the ring of Morin maps. In the second part of the paper we compute the oriented Thom polynomial of the $\Sigma^2$ singularity type with $\Q$ coefficients. This is a survey paper of author's results on cobordism groups and semigroups of fold maps and simple fold maps. The results include: establishing a relation between fold maps and immersions through geometrical invariants of cobordism classes of fold maps and simple fold maps in terms of immersions with prescribed normal bundles, detecting stable homotopy groups of spheres as direct summands of the cobordism semigroups of fold maps, Pontryagin-Thom type construction for -1 codimensional fold maps and estimations about the cobordism classes of manifolds which have fold maps into stably parallelizable manifolds. In the last section some of these results are extended and we show that our invariants also detect stable homotopy groups of the classifying spaces $BO(k)$ as direct summands of the cobordism semigroups of fold maps., Comment: 13 pages

We obtain complete geometric invariants of cobordism classes of oriented simple fold maps of (n+1)-dimensional manifolds into an n-dimensional manifold N in terms of immersions with prescribed normal bundles. We compute that this cobordism group of simple fold maps is isomorphic to the direct sum of the (n-1)th stable homotopy group of spheres and the (n-1)th stable homotopy group of the infinite dimensional projective space. By using geometric invariants defined in the author's earlier works, we also describe the natural map of the simple fold cobordism group to the fold cobordism group by natural homomorphisms between cobordism groups of immersions. We show that the cobordism groups of negative codimensional folds maps contain direct sums of stable homotopy groups of Thom spaces of vector bundles like the circle and the infinite dimensional projective space. We give geometrical invariants which detect these direct summands., Comment: 10 pages

Let $M^2$ be an oriented 2-manifold and $f:M^2\to R^3$ a $C^\infty$-map. A point $p\in M^2$ is called a singular point if $f$ is not an immersion at $p$. The map $f$ is called a front (or wave front), if there exists a unit $C^\infty$-vector field $\nu$ such that the image of each tangent vector $df(X)$ $(X\in TM^2)$ is perpendicular to $\nu$, and the pair $(f,\nu)$ gives an immersion into $R^3\times S^2$. In our previous paper, we gave an intrinsic formulation of wave fronts in $R^3$. In this paper, we shall investigate the behavior of cuspidal edges near corank one singular points and establish Gauss-Bonnet-type formulas under the intrinsic formulation., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures

A generic smooth map of a closed $2k$-manifold into $(3k-1)$-space has a finite number of cusps ($\Sigma^{1,1}$-singularities). We determine the possible numbers of cusps of such maps. A fold map is a map with singular set consisting of only fold singularities ($\Sigma^{1,0}$-singularities). Two fold maps are fold bordant if there are cobordisms between their source- and target manifolds with a fold map extending the two maps between the boundaries, if the two targets agree and the target cobordism can be taken as a product with a unit interval then the maps are fold cobordant. We compute the cobordism groups of fold maps of $(2k-1)$-manifolds into $(3k-2)$-space. Analogous cobordism semi-groups for arbitrary closed $(3k-2)$-dimensional target manifolds are endowed with Abelian group structures and described. We prove a conjecture due to M. Kazarian, connecting two classifying spaces in singularity theory. These spaces are: - Kazarian's space (generalizing Vassiliev's algebraic complex and) showing which cohomology classes are represented by singularity strata. - Author's space $X_\tau$ giving homotopy representation of cobordisms of singular maps with a given list of allowed singularities \cite{R--Sz}. As a consequence we obtain the ranks of cobordism groups of singular maps with a given list of allowed singularities, and also their $p$-torsion parts for big primes $p.$ Further we give complete answer to the problem of elimination of singularities by cobordisms. Obtain very clear homotopical description of the classifying space $X_\tau.$ We reveal some connection of the torsion parts of these cobordism groups to the stable homotopy groups of spheres and values of Thom polynomials., Comment: Revised version, some parts were excluded, some parts are explained in greater detail

In terms of category theory, the Gromov homotopy principle for a set valued functor $F$ asserts that the functor $F$ can be induced from a homotopy functor. Similarly, we say that the bordism principle for an abelian group valued functor $F$ holds if the functor $F$ can be induced from a (co)homology functor. We examine the bordism principle in the case of functors given by (co)bordism groups of maps with prescribed singularities. Our main result implies that if a family $R$ of prescribed singularity types satisfies certain mild conditions, then there exists an infinite loop space $B(R)$ such that for each smooth manifold $N$ the cobordism group of maps into $N$ with only $R$-singularities is isomorphic to the group of homotopy classes of maps $[N, B(R)]$., Comment: 38 pages

To an oriented link in a solid torus we associate a trace graph in a thickened torus in such a way that links are isotopic if and only if their trace graphs can be related by moves of finitely many standard types. The key ingredient is a study of codimension~2 singularities of link diagrams. Let M and N be closed n-dimensional manifolds, and equip N with a volume form \sigma. Let \mu be an exact n-form on M. Arnold then asked the question: When can one find a map f:;N such that f*\sigma=\mu. In 1973 Eliashberg and Gromov showed that this problem is, in a deep sense, trivial: It satisfies an h-principle, and whenever one can find a bundle map f_bdl:T M to T N which is degree 0 on the base and induces \mu one can homotop this map to a solution f. That is if the naive topological conditions are satisfied on can find a solution. There is no further interesting geometry in the problem. We show the corresponding parametric h-principle fails- if one considers families of maps inducing \mu from \sigma, one can find interesting topology in the space of solutions which is not predicted by an h-principle. Moreover the homotopy type of such maps is quantized: for certain families of forms homotopy type remains constant, jumping only at discrete values., Comment: 26 pages. 6 figures

We give the Thom polynomials for the singularities I_2,2 and A_3 associated with maps (C^n,0) -> (C^{n+k},0) with parameter k>=0. We give the Schur function expansions of these Thom polynomials. Moreover, for the singularities A_i (with any parameter k >= 0) we analyze the ``first approximation'' F^(i) to the Thom polynomial. In this paper we define two regular homotopy invariants c and i for immersions of oriented 3-manifolds into R^5 in a geometric manner. The pair (c(f),i(f)) completely describes the regular homotopy class of the immersion f. The invariant i corresponds to the 3-dimensional obstruction that arises from Hirsch-Smale theory and extends the one defined in [10] for immersions with trivial normal bundle., Comment: 17 pages

We show that Haefliger's differentiable (6,3)-knot bounds, in 6-space, a 4-manifold (a Seifert surface) of arbitrarily prescribed signature. This implies, according to our previous paper, that the Seifert surface has been prolonged in a prescribed direction near its boundary. This aspect enables us to understand a resemblance between Ekholm-Szucs' formula for the Smale invariant and Boechat-Haefliger's formula for Haefliger knots. As a consequence, we show that an immersion of the 3-sphere in 5-space can be regularly homotoped to the projection of an embedding in 6-space if and only if its Smale invariant is even. We also correct a sign error in our previous paper: "A geometric formula for Haefliger knots" [Topology 43 (2004) 1425-1447].

A natural way of generalising Hamiltonian toric manifolds is to permit the presence of generic isolated singularities for the moment map. For a class of such ``almost-toric 4-manifolds'' which admits a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action we show that one can associate a group of convex polygons that generalise the celebrated moment polytopes of Atiyah, Guillemin-Sternberg. As an application, we derive a Duistermaat-Heckman formula demonstrating a strong effect of the possible monodromy of the underlying integrable system., Comment: finally a revision of the 2003 preprint. 29 pages, 8 figures

Let A subset R^n be a set-germ at 0 in R^n such that 0 is in the closure of A. Let D(A) denote the set of all directions of A at 0 in R^n. Let A, B subsets R^n be subanalytic set-germs at 0 in R^n such that 0 belongs to their closure. We study the problem of whether the dimension of the common direction set, called their kissing dimension, is preserved by a bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism. We show that in general it is not preserved. We prove that the kissing dimension is preserved if the images of the subanalytic sets under consideration are also subanalytic. In particular, if two subanalytic set-germs are bi-Lipschitz equivalent, then their direction sets must have the same dimension., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

We shall introduce the singular curvature function on cuspidal edges of surfaces, which is related to the Gauss-Bonnet formula and which characterizes the shape of cuspidal edges. Let $N$ and $P$ be smooth closed manifolds of dimensions $n$ and $p$ respectively. Given a Thom-Boardman symbol $I$, a smooth map $f:N\to P$ is called an $\Omega^{I}$-regular map if and only if the Thom-Boardman symbol of each singular point of $f$ is not greater than $I$ in the lexicographic order. We will represent the group of all cobordism classes of $\Omega^{I}$-regular maps of $n$-dimensional closed manifolds into $P$ in terms of certain stable homotopy groups. Let f: M -> N be an even codimensional immersion between smooth manifolds. We derive an explicit formula for the Pontrjagin numbers and signature of the multiple point manifolds in terms of singular cohomology of M and N, the maps induced between these by f and the characteristic classes of the normal bundle. The computation of the cobordism group of Morse functions on unoriented surfaces using Stein factorizations., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Coincident root loci are subvarieties of $S^d(C^2)$--the space of binary forms of degree $d$--labelled by partitions of $d$. Given a partition $\lambda$, let $X_\lambda$ be the set of forms with root multiplicity corresponding to $\lambda$. There is a natural action of $GL_2(C)$ on $S^d(C^2)$ and the coincident root loci are invariant under this action. We calculate their equivariant Poincar\'e duals generalizing formulas of Hilbert and Kirwan. In the second part we apply these results to present the cohomology ring of the corresponding moduli spaces (stable points$/G$, semistable points$/G$, link of the singularity) using geometrically defined relations., Comment: 15 pages

This paper contains a long summary of the basic properties of higher FR torsion. An attempt is made to simplify the constructions from my book Higher Franz-Reidemeister Torsion (IP/AMS Studies in Advanced Math 31). Some new basic theorems are also proved such as the Framing Principle in full generality. This is used to compute the higher torsion for bundles with closed even dimensional fibers. We construct a higher complex torsion for bundles with almost complex fibers. This is shown to generalize the real even dimensional higher FR torsion. We prove that the homotopy class of a Morin mapping f: P^p --> Q^q with p-q odd contains a cusp mapping. This affirmatively solves a strengthened version of the Chess conjecture [DS Chess, A note on the classes [S_1^k(f)], Proc. Symp. Pure Math., 40 (1983) 221-224] and [VI Arnol'd, VA Vasil'ev, VV Goryunov, OV Lyashenko, Dynamical systems VI. Singularities, local and global theory, Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences - Vol. 6 (Springer, Berlin, 1993)]. Also, in view of the Saeki-Sakuma theorem [O Saeki, K Sakuma, Maps with only Morin singularities and the Hopf invariant one problem, Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. In this paper we propose a systematic study of Thom polynomials for group actions defined by M. Kazarian. On one hand we show that Thom polynomials are first obstructions for the existence of a section and are connected to several problems of topology, global geometry and enumerative algebraic geometry. On the other hand we describe a way to calculate Thom polynomials: the method of restriction equations. It turned out that though the idea is quite simple the method is very powerful. We reproduced and improved earlier result in several directions (singularities, Schubert calculus, quivers). However a proper introduction to the basic theorems was missing. In this paper we try to pay this debt as well as we present the connections with obstruction theory and equivariant cohomology. We give some new results and outline possible generalizations and problems.

We give three formulas expressing the Smale invariant of an immersion f of a (4k-1)-sphere into (4k+1)-space. The terms of the formulas are geometric characteristics of any generic smooth map g of any oriented 4k-dimensional manifold, where g restricted to the boundary is an immersion regularly homotopic to f in (6k-1)-space. The formulas imply that if f and g are two non-regularly homotopic immersions of a (4k-1)-sphere into (4k+1)-space then they are also non-regularly homotopic as immersions into (6k-1)-space. Moreover, any generic homotopy in (6k-1)-space connecting f to g must have at least a_k(2k-1)! cusps, where a_k=2 if k is odd and a_k=1 if k is even., Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX2e
