In order to explore the pollination biology characteristics of Pleione formosana Hayata, their flowering phenology, pollen vigor, stigma receptivity, breeding systems, and insect pollination behaviors were observed for 2 consecutive years in the Daiyunshan National Nature Reserve in Fujian. It was found that Bombus trifasciatus and Bombioxylocopa chinensis are the pollinators of P. formosana. The thorax heights of Bombus trifasciatus and Bombioxylocopa chinensis were (1.4±0.2) cm and (1.5±0.2) cm, respectively, both of which were higher than the height of the pollination channel entrance by (0.8±0.2) cm. The pollinating insect enters the flower through the mid-lobe of the outer bending lip. When it finds no nectar as reward, it exits the flower; the anther cap will then open causing the viscidium of the pollinium to adhere to the back of the pollinator. When the pollinator enters the same flower or different flowers, the pollination may be completed. It is speculated that P. formosana may attract insects through its golden yellow stripes (fake nectar-guide) on its lips for pollination, which is food-deceptive. Breeding experiments showed that P. formosana is highly self-compatible and that there is no apomixis or self-pollination. The pollination success of this species depends on its pollinators. Therefore, the population density of pollinators and their frequency of visiting flowers may be important factors affecting the fruit set of P. formosana, and ultimately affect the maintenance and expansion of its population.
