Eddy current separation apparatus (1) for separating particles (20) from a particle stream (w), wherein the apparatus (1) comprises a separator drum (4) adapted to create a first particle fraction (21) and a second particle fraction (23), a feeding device (2) upstream of the separator drum (4) for supplying particles (20) to said separator drum (4), and a splitter element (14) provided downstream of the separator drum (4) for splitting the respective fractions (21,23), wherein the apparatus (1) further comprises a sensor device (11,111,211) arranged for detecting particles (20), at least a number and/or material properties thereof, from at least part of one of the particle fractions (21), wherein the separation apparatus (1) is configured to adjust, in use, a position and/or orientation of the splitter element (14) with respect to the separator drum (4); and/or a transporting velocity of the feeding device (2) in dependence of a signal from the sensor device (11,111,211) based on the number and/or material properties of the detected particles (20).

An experiment was conducted at the Khanpura Poultry Farm, near to the Babugonj campus of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Patuakhali during the period from August to September, 2011 to evaluate the effect of growth promoter and multivitamin-mineral premix on the body weight gain in broiler chickens. A total of 90 ‘Cobb 500’ day-old broiler chickens were randomly divided into three equal groups (n = 30), namely Groups A, B and C. Broiler birds in groups A and B were supplemented with growth promoter and multivitamin-mineral premix, respectively in addition to commercial feed from day 4 till day 25. The dose of both the growth promoter and multivitamin-mineral premix was 2.5 g/kg of feed. Chickens of group C served as control and supplemented with commercial feed only. Body weight was recorded at three times as on day 11, 18 and 25, respectively. The mean body weight was insignificantly (p > 0.05) higher in birds of groups A (992.5±139.6g) and B (978.3±147.0g) than those of group C (926.7±133.2g). The percent increase in body weight gain compare to control was increased in both the supplemented groups (5.8% in group A and 8.8% in group B) though there was no significant difference. Based on the results, it is suggested that supplementation of growth promoter and multivitamin-mineral premix in broilers even after feeding of commercial feed has positive effect on the growth of broilers.

This study was conducted with the development of instant fish soup mix and finding out the effect of fish powder on it. Ingredients of soup mix were cooked and dried up to desired moisture content. The drying or dehydration was done by using a mechanical dryer (Cabinet dryer) at constant air flow rate and constant temperature with varying thicknesses. After drying the dried products were ground to make powder. These were then mixed with desired composition. Here fish powder was varied in composition in different samples and it was 5%, 10% and 15% in Mix-1, Mix-2 and Mix-3 respectively. For preparing soup mix was reconstituted with boiled water. The result of organoleptic test was determined by ANOVA and DMRT analysis to find out the best sample. (Mix-2) was adjudged to be the best by the panelists using 1-9 hedonic scale and ranked as “like very much” securing score 8.0 which containing 10% fish power.

A study was undertaken to find out the impact of ten days fishing ban in the major spawning grounds of hilsa during October to December. The study revealed a positive impact of fishing ban during spawning season on reproduction success of hilsa. Proportionate distribution of male and female hilsa also showed a significant level of distribution in and around the spawning grounds where the ratio was 35:65. Percent of oozing hilsa during fishing ban period in the spawning grounds was observed 1.61%. About 5% spent hilsa was observed in the fish landing centers and was compared with the data of Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) studies and was found about 2.80-3.57 times higher than that of the findings of 2002 and 2003. Estimated egg production value showed about 46,800 Kg of eggs could have been produced that indicating a positive impact of 10 days fishing ban in spawning season. Abundance of higher percentages of gravid hilsa was found which were not available in the same quantity and condition in the non-fishing ban period. During the present investigation, fairly higher amount of spent hilsa and juveniles were also observed in the spawning grounds. Along with the jatka fry, spawn and fries of other fishes were also found in higher quantity than the previous years and thus it is assumed that fishing ban also might have positive impact on the successful breeding of other fishes. Overall, the fishing ban was found effective for successful breeding of hilsa.

The induction of tetraploidy by means of cold, heat and multiple heat shock treatments was investigated on male fish from a growth-enhanced transgenic tilapia C118 line, crossed with wild type females. After the development a new multiple heat shock protocol (two heat treatments at 41oC in 60 and 80 min. after fertilization for 5 min. per each), chromosome and X-gal in situ staining assays demonstrated the successful production of yolk sac tetraploid transgenic tilapia in two out of 15 embryos examined in this trial via direct correlation between higher level of b-galactosidase expression and karyotyping in the samples verifying complete tetraploidy in this line. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pendapat masyarakat kampus tentang potensi sarana peribadahan apakah mendorong sikap keagamaan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah mengamati dan menginventarisasi sarana-sarana peribadahan yang ada pada seluruh fakultas di lingkup Universitas Hasanuddin. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa seluruh fakultas mempunyai sarana peribadahan yang kapasitasnya ada yang kecil dan adayang besar. Sarana peribadahan ini sering melakukan kegiatan keagamaan yang mendorong sikap keagamman bagi masyarakat kampus menjadi lebih baik terutama pelaksanaan syariat agama Islam. Pada dasarnya sarana peribadahan yang letaknya/lokasinya ada pada setiap fakultas menimbulkan sikap keagamaan yang lebih baik.

Sperata aor and S. seenghala are the two important native catfishes of Bangladesh but commercial farming of these species is not possible due to lack of naturally collected or artificially produced seeds for stocking. Attempts were made to develop techniques for seed production by artificial breeding and nursery-rearing of fries of these catfishes. A total of 60 S. seenghala (750-1,500 g) and 10 S. aor (600-1,000 g) broods were collected from the Brahmaputra river-basin and floodplains in Mymensingh region four months prior to their breeding season. The collected brood fishes were reared in separate earthen ponds with supplementary feeds comprising of rice bran (40%), mustard oil cake (29%), fish meal (30%) and vitamin-premix (1 %). Three experiments were conducted to optimize the hormone dose. A total of nine S. seenghala females weighing from 750 to 1,500 g were given an initial and resolving dose of 12-20 and 16-24 mg PG/kg body weight, respectively. The males weighing from 650-950 g were administered a single dose of 18-26 mg PG/kg body weight at the time of the time of administering the resolving dose to the females. The females ovulated partially and the eggs were examined under a compound microscope, but most of them were found to be less ripe or damaged. Collection of milt by stripping the males was not successful. The testes were taken out and sperm were observed to be non-motile and less developed. In view of stimulating natural propagation of S. seenghala, artificial holes (nests) were constructed in the pond bottom. Each hole was 0.7 m in diameter and 0.3 m in depth. A total of 10 holes were made and then 10 pairs of S. seenghala breeders (800-1,200 g) were stocked in the pond. In mid February, 3,000 fry of S. seenghala with a mean length of 4.60 cm and weight of 0.36 g were collected by repeated netting followed by drying of the pond. The fry were then stocked in a nursery pond and fed with commercial feed (SABINCO starter-1). The average length and weight of the fingerlings were 9.01 cm and 3.95 g, respectively and the estimated survival was 60% after two months of rearing. S. aor did not respond to natural spawning. Further study is essential to develop techniques for their successful artificial and natural breeding.

Population dynamics of the juvenile hilsa shad (Tenualosa ilisha) in the nursery ground of the Meghna River have been studied on the basis of the length cohort analysis of 8023 specimens. The growth parameters viz; asymptotic length (Lα), curvature character (K) and initial time (t0) were found to be 30.69 cm, 1.2 yrˉ¹ and 0.45 yrˉ¹ respectively. Curvature parameter indicates that jatka is a fast growth performer. The natural, fishing and total mortality were found to be 1.37 yrˉ¹, 1.41 yrˉ¹ and 2.78 yrˉ¹ respectively. Survival rate (S) was found to be 6.2%. A small difference was found between the age at first capture (Tc) and the recruitment age (Tr). Stocks of jatka seem to be overexploited and need to be conserved.

A study on the effects of artificial feeds on the growth and production of fishes in polyculture in 6 ponds along with some limnological conditions was conducted. Species of Indian and Chinese major carps (Labeo rohita, Catla catla, Cirrhinus mrigala, Hypophthalmicthys molitrix) and catfishes (Clarias batrachus, Clarias gariepinus) were stocked in 6 ponds. Stocking rate in both cases were 32044 fingerlings per hectare. Ratio of species of Rui:Catla:Mrigal:Silver carp:African Magur:Local Magur=25%:25%:5%:25%:14%:6%. Fertilization and artificial feeds were given in 3 ponds (treatment I) and only fertilization was done in other 3 ponds (treatment II). Average yield/ha/yr was 7.903 m.ton in case of fertilization and artificial feeding application and 3.374 m.ton in case of only fertilization application. Urea, TSP and cow dung were applied fortnightly at the rates of 400 kg/ha/yr, 2000 kg/ha/yr and 4000 kg/ha/yr respectively. Wheat bran, rice bran and mustard oil cake were given daily as an artificial feed in treatment I. Whereas treatment II was conducted without any artificial feed. Ratio of artificial feed was wheat bran:rice bran:oil cake=2:2:1 (by wt). Absence of artificial feed in 3 ponds under treatment II seriously affected the growth and production of fish.

Artemia cysts were produced from the traditional solar salt works of Bangladesh through different fertilization treatments were tested for viability and hatching performance in different forms, such as processed and preserved, processed and decapsulated and unprocessed and undecapsulated. Decapsulated cysts performed maximum hatching (86.0%) in 20ppt salinity during 48 hours of incubation. The hatching percentage by the unprocessed and undecapsulated cysts were very low (12.0- 18.7%) in all the tested salinity grades.

A complete revision of the Asiatic genus Pentasacme Wall. ex Wight is given with a key to the four species. The distribution, ecology, and comparative morphology of the genus are discussed and the variation in diagnostic features within the genus is shown by illustration. Two sections are recognized in the genus, one of which is new, and one species is reduced to synonymy.

Three new combinations in the genera Telosma and Oxystelma are made. The full synonymy of Oxystelma secamone (L.) Karsten, Bidaria indica Rahman & Wilcock, and Gongronema nepalense (Wallich) Decne. is given, which results in some reductions, and a lectotype for the latter is proposed.
