Surface waters are essential for meeting the needs of the world. In many regions, stream water quality is a major concern due to contamination from multiple sources. Stream water is also susceptible to climatic events and land-use practices influencing its catchment. Understanding the impact of such events on stream water quality is crucial for managing and protecting aquatic ecosystems and providing safe drinking water to communities that rely on these streams. Hence, monitoring and evaluating stream water quality holds significance in identifying potential hazards and implementing suitable management strategies. In this paper, a novel effort was made to determine the relative feature importance of a set of watershed characteristics (precipitation, temperature, urban land use, agricultural land use, and forest land-use factors) on four important water quality parameters (WQPs): fecal coliforms (FC), turbidity, pH, and conductivity of the Upper Green River watershed, Kentucky, USA. Random forest (RF), an ensemble learning method, was used to predict the WQPs from the causal parameters and determine the feature importance characteristics of the four WQPs previously mentioned. This model demonstrated that precipitation and temperature are the most influential factors on FC, turbidity, and pH. Forest land use and temperature are the two most important factors for conductivity. The novel feature importance factors of the RF model have likewise been confirmed for each WQP. In modeling stream WQPs, the developed the RF model outperformed the artificial neural network (ANN) model. Using the RF model, we obtain regression coefficients of (0.93, 0.74, and 0.94) for pH in training, testing, and overall. We obtain regression coefficients of (0.60, 0.64, and 0.61) using the ANN model. ⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠Overall, the RF model was more effective than the ANN model in modeling stream WQPs. The model identified precipitation and temperature as the most influential factors on FC, turbidity, and pH, while forest land use and temperature were the most important factors in determining conductivity. It is also found that land use factors are important to improve the accuracy of WQPs predictions from climate variables. This paper examines the reproducibility of learned explanations for black-box predictions via model distillation using classification trees. We find that common tree distillation methods fail to reproduce a single stable explanation when applied to the same teacher model due the randomness of the distillation process. We study this issue of reliable interpretation and propose a standardized framework for tree distillation to achieve reproducibility. The proposed framework consists of (1) a statistical test to stabilize tree splits, and (2) a stopping rule for tree building when using a teacher that provides an estimate of the uncertainty of its predictions, e.g. random forests. This paper introduces a "Smart Fertilizing Using Internet of Things (IoT) Multi-Sensors" system to enhance fertilizer management in agriculture. The system has four main parts: the Nutro Determining Unit (NDU), the Nutro Sensing Unit (NSU), the Nutro UAV Variable Fertiliser Spray System, and a Variable Rate Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Sprayer model. The NDU collects vital data on Soil Moisture (SM) and Environmental Conditions (EnC) using advanced IoT cameras, while the NSU consolidates and normalises the data for advanced analysis using Heuristic Decision Trees (HDT) and Random Forest (RF) algorithms. In India, a data-driven UAV system uses IoT and UAV technologies to determine nutrient needs and create a prescription map for fertilizer application. The approach caused increases in the efficient utilisation of resources, Crop Yield (CY), and ecological footprint when it underwent evaluation in a crop maize field that was 14 hectares in size. A fresh benchmark for Smart Farming (SF) techniques has been set up by this method of operation, which is motivated by data and symbolises an important innovation in modern and ecologically conscious SF methods. In E-learning, evaluating students' comprehension of lecture video content is significant. The surge in online platform usage due to the pandemic has been remarkable, but the pressing issue is that learning outcomes still need to match the growth. Addressing this, a scientific system that gauges the comprehensibility of lecture videos becomes crucial for the effective design of future courses. This research paper is based on a cognitive approach utilizing EEG signals to determine student's level of comprehension. The study involves the design, evaluation, and comparison of multiple machines learning models, aiming to contribute to developing an efficient learning system. Fifteen distinct machine learning (ML) classifiers were implemented, among them AdaBoost (ADA), gradient boosting (GBC), extreme gradient boosting (XGboost), extra trees (ET), random forest (RF), light gradient boosting machine (light gum), and decision tree (DT) algorithms standouts. The DT exhibited exceptional performance across metrics such as area under the curve (AUC), accuracy, recall, F1 score, Kappa, precision, and matthews correlation coefficient (MCC). It achieved nearly 1.0 in these metrics while taking a short training time of only 1.7 seconds. The world was affected by a novel coronavirus in December 2019 that changed human life. Several types of research have been done, substantial scientific advances have been made, and millions of dollars have been spent on bringing scholars and scientists to one platform to end this critical pandemic. Ascertaining COVID-19 diagnoses in the initial stage of the pandemic was critical, specifically for patients with no manifestations. In this case, artificial intelligence-based systems were proposed to identify the virus at an earlier phase. Thus, the present study suggests a machine vision scheme to identify COVID-19 from chest X-ray images. Three machine learning approaches, such as logistic regression (LR), decision tree (DT), and random forest (RF), were implemented with more than 95% accuracy. The deep convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture was also proposed and implemented with a 99.99% detection rate. INTRODUCTION: Intelligent diagnosis of CNC machine tool faults can not only early detection and troubleshooting to improve the reliability of machine tool operation and work efficiency, but also in advance of the station short maintenance to extend the life of the machine tool to ensure that the production line of normal production. OBJECTIVES: For the current research on CNC machine tool fault diagnosis, there are problems such as poorly considered feature selection and insufficiently precise methods. METHODS: This paper proposes a CNC machine tool fault diagnosis method based on improving random forest by intelligent optimisation algorithm with integrated learning as the framework. Firstly, the CNC machine tool fault diagnosis process is analysed to extract the CNC machine tool fault features and construct the time domain, frequency domain and time-frequency domain feature system; then, the random forest is improved by the marine predator optimization algorithm with integrated learning as the framework to construct the CNC machine tool fault diagnosis model; finally, the validity and superiority of the proposed method is verified by simulation experiment analysis. INTRODUCTION: The optimization of the teaching evaluation system, as an essential part of teaching reform in higher vocational colleges and universities, is conducive to the development of higher vocational colleges and universities' disciplines, making the existing teaching more standardized. OBJECTIVES: Aiming at the problems of inefficiency, incomplete index system, and low assessment accuracy in evaluation methods of higher vocational colleges and universities. METHODS: Proposes a teaching evaluation method for higher vocational colleges and universities with a big data mining algorithm and an intelligent optimization algorithm. Firstly, the teaching evaluation index system of higher vocational colleges and universities is downgraded and analyzed by using principal component analysis; then, the random forest hyperparameters are optimized by the grey wolf optimization algorithm, and the teaching evaluation model of higher vocational colleges and universities is constructed; finally, the validity and stability of the proposed method is verified by simulation experimental analysis. RESULTS: The results show that the proposed method improves the accuracy of the evaluation model. A stroke is a dangerous, life-threatening disease that mostly affects people over 65, but an unhealthy diet is also contributing to the development of strokes at younger ages. Strokes can be treated successfully if they are identified early enough, and suitable therapies are available. The purpose of this study is to develop a stroke prediction model that will improve stroke prediction effectiveness as well as accuracy. Predicting whether someone is suffering from a stroke or not can be accomplished with this proposed machine learning algorithm. In this research, various machine learning techniques are evaluated for predicting stroke on the healthcare stroke dataset. The feature selection algorithms used here are gradient boosting and random forest, and classifiers include the decision tree classifier, Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier, logistic regression classifier, gradient boosting classifier, random forest classifier, K neighbors classifier, and Xtreme gradient boosting classifier. In this process, different machine-learning approaches are employed to test predictive methods on different data samples. Background: Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is a predictor of serious infectious complications, organ failure, and death in patients with severe polytrauma and is one of the reasons for delaying early total surgical treatment. To determine the risk of SIRS within 24 h after hospitalization, we developed six machine learning models. Materials and methods: Using retrospective data about the patient, the nature of the injury, the results of general and standard biochemical blood tests, and coagulation tests, six models were developed: decision tree, random forest, logistic regression, support vector and gradient boosting classifiers, logistic regressor, and neural network. The effectiveness of the models was assessed through internal and external validation. Results: Among the 439 selected patients with severe polytrauma in 230 (52.4%), SIRS was diagnosed within the first 24 h of hospitalization. The SIRS group was more strongly associated with class II bleeding (39.5% vs. 60.5%; OR 1.81 [95% CI: 1.23–2.65]; P = 0.0023), long-term vasopressor use (68.4% vs. 31.6%; OR 5.51 [95% CI: 2.37–5.23]; P < 0.0001), risk of acute coagulopathy (67.8% vs. 32.2%; OR 2.4 [95% CI: 1.55–3.77]; P < 0.0001), and greater risk of pneumonia (59.5% vs. 40.5%; OR 1.74 [95% CI: 1.19–2.54]; P = 0.0042), longer ICU length of stay (5 ± 6.3 vs. 2.7 ± 4.3 days; P < 0.0001) and mortality rate (64.5% vs. 35.5%; OR 10.87 [95% CI: 6.3–19.89]; P = 0.0391). Of all the models, the random forest classifier showed the best predictive ability in the internal (AUROC 0.89; 95% CI: 0.83–0.96) and external validation (AUROC 0.83; 95% CI: 0.75–0.91) datasets. Conclusions: The developed model made it possible to accurately predict the risk of developing SIRS in the early period after injury, allowing clinical specialists to predict patient management tactics and calculate medication and staffing needs for the patient. Lactate analysis plays an important role in sports science and training decisions for optimising performance, endurance, and overall success in sports. Two parameters are widely used for these goals: aerobic (AeT) and anaerobic (AnT) thresholds. However, determining AeT proves more challenging than AnT threshold due to both physiological intricacies and practical considerations. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine AeT and AnT thresholds using machine learning modelling (ML) and to compare ML-obtained results with the parameters' values determined using conventional methods. ML seems to be highly useful due to its ability to handle complex, personalised data, identify nonlinear relationships, and provide accurate predictions. The 183 results of CardioPulmonary Exercise Test (CPET) accompanied by lactate and heart ratio analyses from amateur athletes were enrolled to the study and ML models using the following algorithms: Random Forest, XGBoost (Extreme Gradient Boosting), and LightGBM (Light Gradient Boosting Machine) and metrics: R2, mean absolute error (MAE), mean squared error (MSE) and root mean square error (RMSE). The regressors used belong to the group of ensemble learning algorithms that combine the predictions of multiple base models to improve overall performance and counteract overfitting to training data. Based on evaluation metrics, the following models give the best predictions: for AeT: Random Forest has an R2 value of 0.645, MAE of 4.630, MSE of 44.450, RMSE of 6.667; and for AnT: LightGBM has an R2 of 0.803, the highest among the models, MAE of 3.439, the lowest among the models, MSE of 20.953, and RMSE of 4.577. Outlined research experiments, a comprehensive review of existing literature in the field, and obtained results suggest that ML models can be trained to make personalised predictions based on an individual athlete's unique physiological response to exercise. Athletes exhibit significant variation in their AeT and AT, and ML can capture these individual differences, allowing for tailored training recommendations and performance optimization. Peatlands, which only cover 3 to 5 percent of the global land area, can store up to twice the amount of carbon as the world's forests. Although recognised for their significant role in the global carbon cycle, discovering the global extent of peatlands and their carbon stock remains challenging. Referring to the UNEP's global peatland map, here we present PEATGRIDS, a data product containing global maps of peat thickness and carbon stock created created using the digital soil mapping approach. We compiled over 25,000 observations of peatland thickness, bulk density (BD) and carbon content (CC), globally. Using the Random Forest (RF) algorithm, we estimated peat thickness and peat BD and CC at ~1 km resolution at multiple depths (0–2 m) globally. The estimates were generated using 19 land surface covariates from digital maps and remote sensing images of land use, soil characteristics, topographical features, and climate parameters. The RF models for peat thickness were trained on 25,200 points grouped into six geographic regions. Validation of the peat thickness estimates showed a good performance, with the coefficient of determination (R2)ranging from 0.15 to 0.72. The prediction for peat BD and CC followed the same model architecture and were trained on 17,000 and 7,000 points, respectively. Overall, BD and CC models performed well and consistently across soil layers with average R2 values of 0.61 for BD and 0.48 for CC. Based on the estimated peat thickness, BD and CC, the carbon stock of global peatland was estimated to be 1,029 Pg C for peat dominated area of 6.57 million km2. Purpose: To find the machine learning (ML) method that has the highest accuracy in predicting the semen quality of men based on basic questionnaire data about lifestyle behavior. Methods: The medical records of men whose semen was analyzed for any reason were collected. Those who had data about their lifestyle behaviors were included in the study. All semen analyses of the men included were evaluated according to the WHO 2021 guideline. All semen analyses were categorized as normozoospermia, oligozoospermia, teratozoospermia, and asthenozoospermia. The Extra Trees Classifier, Average (AVG) Blender, Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM) Classifier, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) Classifier, Logistic Regression, and Random Forest Classifier techniques were used as ML algorithms. Results: Seven hundred thirty-four men who met the inclusion criteria and had data about lifestyle behavior were included in the study. 356 men (48.5%) had abnormal semen results, 204 (27.7%) showed the presence of oligozoospermia, 193 (26.2%) asthenozoospermia, and 265 (36.1%) teratozoospermia according to the WHO 2021. The AVG Blender model had the highest accuracy and AUC for predicting normozoospermia and teratozoospermia. The Extra Trees Classifier and Random Forest Classifier models achieved the best performance for predicting oligozoospermia and asthenozoospermia, respectively. Objective: At different times, public health faces various challenges and the degree of intervention measures varies. The research on the impact and prediction of meteorology factors on influenza is increasing gradually, however, there is currently no evidence on whether its research results are affected by different periods. This study aims to provide limited evidence to reveal this issue. Methods: Daily data on influencing factors and influenza in Xiamen were divided into three parts: overall period (phase AB), non-COVID-19 epidemic period (phase A), and COVID-19 epidemic period (phase B). The association between influencing factors and influenza was analysed using generalized additive models (GAMs). The excess risk (ER) was used to represent the percentage change in influenza as the interquartile interval (IQR) of meteorology factors increases. The 7-day average daily influenza cases were predicted using the combination of bi-directional long short memory (Bi-LSTM) and random forest (RF) through multi-step rolling input of the daily multifactor values of the previous 7-day. Results: In periods A and AB, air temperature below 22 °C was a risk factor for influenza. However, in phase B, temperature showed a U-shaped effect on it. Relative humidity had a more significant cumulative effect on influenza in phase AB than in phase A (peak: accumulate 14d, AB: ER = 281.54, 95% CI = 245.47 ~ 321.37; A: ER = 120.48, 95% CI = 100.37 ~ 142.60). Compared to other age groups, children aged 4–12 were more affected by pressure, precipitation, sunshine, and day light, while those aged ≥ 13 were more affected by the accumulation of humidity over multiple days. The accuracy of predicting influenza was highest in phase A and lowest in phase B. Conclusions: The varying degrees of intervention measures adopted during different phases led to significant differences in the impact of meteorology factors on influenza and in the influenza prediction. In association studies of respiratory infectious diseases, especially influenza, and environmental factors, it is advisable to exclude periods with more external interventions to reduce interference with environmental factors and influenza related research, or to refine the model to accommodate the alterations brought about by intervention measures. Background: Microbial community dynamics have been involved in numerous diseases, including cancer. The diversity of intertumoral microbiota in human papillomavirus independent endocervical adenocarcinoma (HPVI ECA) is not well-characterized. Objective: Our objective is to delineate the intratumoral microbiota profile in HPVI ECA and investigate its potential influence on oncogenesis. Methods: We analyzed 45 HPVI ECA cases, comprising 36 gastric-type ECA (GEA) and 9 clear cell carcinomas (CCC). We compared the microbial composition within cancerous and adjacent noncancerous tissue samples using 5R-16S ribosomal DNA sequencing. Further, we investigated the correlation between specific microbes and clinical-pathological metrics as well as patient outcomes. Results: Our findings demonstrate notable differences in the microbial spectra between cancerous and adjacent noncancerous tissues. Amongst HPVI ECA subtypes, GEAs exhibit more microbial variations compared to CCCs. Using the Random Forest algorithm, we identified two distinct microbial signatures that could act as predictive biomarkers for HPVI ECA and differentiate between GEA and CCC. Varied microbial abundances was related to clinical characteristics of HPVI ECA patients. In addition, high levels of Micrococcus and low levels of unknown genus75 from the Comamonadaceae family were associated with poorer outcomes in HPVI ECA patients. Similarly, an abundance of Microbacterium correlated with reduced overall survival (OS), and a high presence of Streptococcaceae family microbes was linked to reduced recurrence-free survival (RFS) in GEA patients. Intriguingly, a high abundance of Micrococcus was also associated with a worse OS in GEA patients. Conclusion: The study reveals distinct microbial signatures in HPVI ECA, which have potential as biomarkers for disease prognosis. The correlation between these tumor-associated microbiota features and clinicopathological characteristics underscores the possibility of microbiome-based interventions. Using a longitudinal national educational dataset, data science methods were applied to explain students' educational trajectories and determine the most predictive variables in STEM degree attainment. Challenging the notion of the STEM pipeline, an Alternative Pathways to STEM (APS) model was proposed. Using a foundation of Social Cognitive Career Theory, academic, demographic, and economic variables were selected for analysis and Imbalanced dataset and random forest data analytic techniques were implemented. Results supported the consideration of the Alternate Pathways to STEM model given the varied educational pathways identified throughout STEM matriculation. Additionally, multiple academic variables, except for career interest, were found to be most predictive of STEM graduation, while demographic and economic variables were not significant. These findings have important implications for recruiting STEM students and increasing STEM graduation rates. Additional research is recommended using these data extraction and analysis methodologies on other datasets to further test the efficacy of the Alternative Pathways to STEM model. Modeling implied volatility (IV) is important for option pricing, hedging, and risk management. Previous studies of deterministic implied volatility functions (DIVFs) propose two parameters, moneyness and time to maturity, to estimate implied volatility. Recent DIVF models have included factors such as a moving average ratio and relative bid-ask spread but fail to enhance modeling accuracy. The current study offers a generalized DIVF model by including a momentum indicator for the underlying asset using a relative strength index (RSI) covering multiple time resolutions as a factor, as momentum is often used by investors and speculators in their trading decisions, and in contrast to volatility, RSI can distinguish between bull and bear markets. To the best of our knowledge, prior studies have not included RSI as a predictive factor in modeling IV. Instead of using a simple linear regression as in previous studies, we use a machine learning regression algorithm, namely random forest, to model a nonlinear IV. Previous studies apply DVIF modeling to options on traditional financial assets, such as stock and foreign exchange markets. Here, we study options on the largest cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, which poses greater modeling challenges due to its extreme volatility and the fact that it is not as well studied as traditional financial assets. Recent Bitcoin option chain data were collected from a leading cryptocurrency option exchange over a four-month period for model development and validation. Our dataset includes short-maturity options with expiry in less than six days, as well as a full range of moneyness, both of which are often excluded in existing studies as prices for options with these characteristics are often highly volatile and pose challenges to model building. Our in-sample and out-sample results indicate that including our proposed momentum indicator significantly enhances the model's accuracy in pricing options. The nonlinear machine learning random forest algorithm also performed better than a simple linear regression. Compared to prevailing option pricing models that employ stochastic variables, our DIVF model does not include stochastic factors but exhibits reasonably good performance. It is also easy to compute due to the availability of real-time RSIs. Our findings indicate our enhanced DIVF model offers significant improvements and may be an excellent alternative to existing option pricing models that are primarily stochastic in nature. The absence of a long COVID (LC) or post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) diagnostic has profound implications for research and potential therapeutics given the lack of specificity with symptom-based identification of LC and the overlap of symptoms with other chronic inflammatory conditions. Here, we report a machine-learning approach to LC/PASC diagnosis on 347 individuals using cytokine hubs that are also capable of differentiating LC from chronic lyme disease (CLD). We derived decision tree, random forest, and gradient-boosting machine (GBM) classifiers and compared their diagnostic capabilities on a dataset partitioned into training (178 individuals) and evaluation (45 individuals) sets. The GBM model generated 89% sensitivity and 96% specificity for LC with no evidence of overfitting. We tested the GBM on an additional random dataset (106 LC/PASC and 18 Lyme), resulting in high sensitivity (97%) and specificity (90%) for LC. The study examined mass transfer coefficients in a structured CO2 absorption column using machine learning (ML) and response surface methodology (RSM). Three correlations for the fractional effective area (af), gas phase mass transfer coefficient (kG), and liquid phase mass transfer coefficient (kL) were derived with coefficient of determination (R2) values of 0.9717, 0.9907 and 0.9323, respectively. To develop these correlations, four characteristics of structured packings, including packing surface area (ap), packing corrugation angle (θ), packing channel base (B), and packing crimp height (h), were used. ML used five models, represented as random forest (RF), radial basis function neural network (RBF), multilayer perceptron (MLP), XGB Regressor, and Extra Trees Regressor (ETR), with the best models being radial basis function neural network (RBF) for af (R2 = 0.9813, MSE = 0.00088), RBF for kG (R2 = 0.9933, MSE = 0.00056), and multilayer perceptron (MLP) for kL (R2 = 0.9871, MSE = 0.00089). The channel base had the most impact on af and kL, while crimp height affected kG the most. Estimation of fruit quality parameters are usually based on destructive techniques which are tedious, costly and unreliable when dealing with huge amounts of fruits. Alternatively, non–destructive techniques such as image processing and spectral reflectance would be useful in rapid detection of fruit quality parameters. This research study aimed to assess the potential of image processing, spectral reflectance indices (SRIs), and machine learning models such as decision tree (DT) and random forest (RF) to qualitatively estimate characteristics of mandarin and tomato fruits at different ripening stages. Quality parameters such as chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b), total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), TSS/TA, carotenoids (car), lycopene and firmness were measured. The results showed that Red-Blue-Green (RGB) indices and newly developed SRIs demonstrated high efficiency for quantifying different fruit properties. For example, the R2 of the relationships between all RGB indices (RGBI) and measured parameters varied between 0.62 and 0.96 for mandarin and varied between 0.29 and 0.90 for tomato. The RGBI such as visible atmospheric resistant index (VARI) and normalized red (Rn) presented the highest R2 = 0.96 with car of mandarin fruits. While excess red vegetation index (ExR) presented the highest R2 = 0.84 with car of tomato fruits. The SRIs such as RSI 710,600, and R730,650 showed the greatest R2 values with respect to Chl a (R2 = 0.80) for mandarin fruits while the GI had the greatest R2 with Chl a (R2 = 0.68) for tomato fruits. Combining RGB and SRIs with DT and RF models would be a robust strategy for estimating eight observed variables associated with reasonable accuracy. Regarding mandarin fruits, in the task of predicting Chl a, the DT-2HV model delivered exceptional results, registering an R2 of 0.993 with an RMSE of 0.149 for the training set, and an R2 of 0.991 with an RMSE of 0.114 for the validation set. As well as for tomato fruits, the DT-5HV model demonstrated exemplary performance in the Chl a prediction, achieving an R2 of 0.905 and an RMSE of 0.077 for the training dataset, and an R2 of 0.785 with an RMSE of 0.077 for the validation dataset. Synthetic lethality (SL) and synthetic viability (SV) are commonly studied genetic interactions in the targeted therapy approach in cancer. In SL, inhibiting either of the genes does not affect the cancer cell survival, but inhibiting both leads to a lethal phenotype. In SV, inhibiting the vulnerable gene makes the cancer cell sick; inhibiting the partner gene rescues and promotes cell viability. Many low and high-throughput experimental approaches have been employed to identify SLs and SVs, but they are time-consuming and expensive. The computational tools for SL prediction involve statistical and machine-learning approaches. Almost all machine learning tools are binary classifiers and involve only identifying SL pairs. Most importantly, there are limited properties known that best describe and discriminate SL from SV. We developed MAGICAL (Multi-class Approach for Genetic Interaction in Cancer via Algorithm Learning), a multi-class random forest based machine learning model for genetic interaction prediction. Network properties of protein derived from physical protein-protein interactions are used as features to classify SL and SV. The model results in an accuracy of ~80% for the training dataset (CGIdb, BioGRID, and SynLethDB) and performs well on DepMap and other experimentally derived reported datasets. Amongst all the network properties, the shortest path, average neighbor2, average betweenness, average triangle, and adhesion have significant discriminatory power. MAGICAL is the first multi-class model to identify discriminatory features of synthetic lethal and viable interactions. MAGICAL can predict SL and SV interactions with better accuracy and precision than any existing binary classifier. Author summary: Targeted therapy aims to selectively target cancer cells without damaging the normal ones. Synthetic lethality is a negative genetic interaction in which alteration of both genes leads to cell death and mediates drug sensitivity. In contrast, synthetic viability is a positive genetic interaction in which gene alteration rescues the cell sickness induced by alteration in the vulnerable gene and promotes cell viability, leading to drug resistance. Hence, identifying these genetic interactions is crucial to fostering selective treatment and improving the patient's health. We have designed MAGICAL, a multi-class classifier for predicting genetic interactions, a machine-learning model that can predict SL and SV based on the network properties. The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is the world's first ultraviolet–visible instrument for air quality monitoring in geostationary orbit. Since its launch in 2020, GEMS has provided hourly daytime air quality information over Asia. However, to date, validation and applications of these data are lacking. Here we evaluate the effectiveness of the first 1.5-year GEMS aerosol optical depth (AOD) data in estimating ground-level particulate matter (PM) concentrations at an hourly scale. To do so, we employ random forest models and use GEMS AOD data and meteorological variables as input features to estimate PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations, respectively, in South Korea. The model-estimated PM concentrations are strongly correlated with ground measurements, but they exhibit negative biases, particularly during high aerosol loading months. Our results indicate that GEMS AOD values represent underestimates compared to ground-measured AOD values, possibly leading to negative biases in the final PM estimates. Further, we demonstrate that more training data could significantly improve random forest model performance, thus indicating the potential of GEMS for high-resolution surface PM prediction when sufficient data are accumulated over the coming years. Background: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major contributor to chronic kidney disease. This study aims to identify immune biomarkers and potential therapeutic drugs in DN. Methods: We analyzed two DN microarray datasets (GSE96804 and GSE30528) for differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using the Limma package, overlapping them with immune-related genes from ImmPort and InnateDB. LASSO regression, SVM-RFE, and random forest analysis identified four hub genes (EGF, PLTP, RGS2, PTGDS) as proficient predictors of DN. The model achieved an AUC of 0.995 and was validated on GSE142025. Single-cell RNA data (GSE183276) revealed increased hub gene expression in epithelial cells. CIBERSORT analysis showed differences in immune cell proportions between DN patients and controls, with the hub genes correlating positively with neutrophil infiltration. Molecular docking identified potential drugs: cysteamine, eltrombopag, and DMSO. And qPCR and western blot assays were used to confirm the expressions of the four hub genes. Results: Analysis found 95 and 88 distinctively expressed immune genes in the two DN datasets, with 14 consistently differentially expressed immune-related genes. After machine learning algorithms, EGF, PLTP, RGS2, PTGDS were identified as the immune-related hub genes associated with DN. In addition, the mRNA and protein levels of them were obviously elevated in HK-2 cells treated with glucose for 24 h, as well as their mRNA expressions in kidney tissues of mice with DN. Conclusion: This study identified 4 hub immune-related genes (EGF, PLTP, RGS2, PTGDS), as well as their expression profiles and the correlation with immune cell infiltration in DN. The present study involves the development of a new method, a range-dependent multivariate adaptive regression splines–genetic algorithm (RD-MARS-GA), for monthly streamflow prediction. The results of the RD-MARS-GA model are compared with standard MARS, Gaussian process regression, principal component regression, M5 model tree and random forest. The input data utilized in the study combine satellite and ground-based datasets. Monthly data from the Treene, Schaale, and Wandse rivers in Northern Germany were used as case studies. The satellite datasets used were sourced from Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2), Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG GPM) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Evapotranspiration (MODIS). A comparison of the results reveals that the RD-MARS-GA can improve the forecasting accuracy of the MARS model across all watersheds at different temporal scales. The RD-MARS-GA model surpassed the other regression models and improved the root mean square accuracy of the MARS model by 12.8%, 26.7% and 18.5% in predicting one-month-ahead streamflow of the rivers Treene, Schaale, and Wandse, respectively. Precise prediction of soil salinity using visible, and near-infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy is crucial for ensuring food security and effective environmental management. This paper focuses on the precise prediction of soil salinity utilizing visible and near-infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy, a critical factor for food security and effective environmental management. The objective is to utilize vis-NIR spectra alongside a multiple regression model (MLR) and a random forest (RF) modeling approach to predict soil salinity across various land use types, such as farmlands, bare lands, and rangelands accurately. To this end, we selected 150 sampling points representatives of these diverse land uses. At each point, we collected soil samples to measure the soil salinity (ECe) and employed a portable spectrometer to capture the spectral reflectance across the full wavelength range of 400 to 2400 nm. The methodology involved using both individual spectral reflectance values and combinations of reflectance values from different wavelengths as input variables for developing the MLR and RF models. The results indicated that the RF model (RMSE = 4.85 dS m-1, R2 = 0.87, and RPD = 3.15), utilizing combined factors as input variables, outperformed others. Furthermore, our analysis across different land uses revealed that models incorporating combined input variables yielded significantly better results, particularly for farmlands and rangelands. This study underscores the potential of combining vis-NIR spectroscopy with advanced modeling techniques to enhance the accuracy of soil salinity predictions, thereby supporting more informed agricultural and environmental management decisions. Here, we evaluate the power of functional traits, ecological characteristics, such as range size and specialization, and phylogeny to predict climatic risks in European butterflies.Europe.Distribution data from 1981 to 2002 was used to project range shifts up to 2080.In total, 268 European butterfly species (Rhopalocera).We extracted information on climatic risk for each species from the literature. Two hypothetical conditions were assumed: full climate tracking and no climate tracking. We used variation partitioning to quantify and disentangle the effects of phylogeny, four traits (wingspan, voltinism, overwintering and egg volume) and two ecological characteristics (range size and specialization) on climatic risk. We used Random Forest as an imputation method to predict climatic risk values for additional European butterfly species that have not been previously modelled.Range size and degree of specialization strongly predicted climatic risk of European butterflies, but only for no climate tracking scenarios. Overall, more generalist species have larger ranges and are less vulnerable to climate change. Furthermore, we found that phylogenetic information adds strong power to explain climatic risk, especially, but not exclusively for scenarios that assume full climate tracking.Considering current scenarios of habitat fragmentation in Europe, it is likely that species with smaller ranges and high degree of specialization will be unable to track their climates and thus be more at risk. However, our results imply that assisting dispersal and colonization might allow small ranged species to cope with climate change. Background: With increasing attention given to host-specific lipid metabolism status, it is of urgent need to identify lipid metabolism indices with predictive or prognostic value in locally advanced breast cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), and to evaluate the performance improvement by incorporating them into the existing Neo-Bioscore staging system. Methods: Patients from a prospectively maintained database of locally advanced breast cancer patients who received radical surgery after NAC between January 2014 to December 2020 were enrolled in this study. The enrolled patients were randomly divided into a training set and a test set at a ratio of 6:4. The random forest algorithm was applied to rank the importance of prognostic factors, top-ranked lipid metabolism indices of which were then incorporated into Neo-Bioscore to construct an updated prognostic model. The performances of these two models were compared in both training set and test set from multiple perspectives. Study outcomes included disease-free survival (DFS), relapse-free survival (RFS), distance-recurrence-free survival (DRFS), locoregional-recurrence-free survival (LRFS) and overall survival (OS). Results: A total of 200 eligible patients were included in this study. After a median follow-up of 4.73 years, it was demonstrated that the relative increase in total cholesterol (TC; DFS: HR = 4.782, 95%CI 1.410 ~ 16.217, P = 0.012) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL; DFS: HR = 4.622, 95%CI 1.517 ~ 14.088, P = 0.007) during NAC led to poorer survival outcomes. Patients with either a higher body mass index (BMI) or elevated LDL during NAC had a worse prognosis (DFS: HR = 6.351, 95%CI 1.938 ~ 20.809, P = 0.002; OS, HR = 6.919, 95%CI 1.296 ~ 36.932, P = 0.024). Incorporating BMI and LDL fluctuations during NAC into Neo-Bioscore improved the prognostic stratification, especially in terms of LRFS (P = 0.046 vs. P = 0.65) and OS (P = 0.013 vs. P = 0.61). Multidimensional evaluation confirmed the improvement in model fit and clinical use for the updated model in both training set and test set. Conclusions: This is the first study to illustrate the relative elevation of LDL and TC levels during NAC as independent prognosticators for locally advanced breast cancer. This is also the first attempt to incorporate lipid metabolism indices into the original Neo-Bioscore staging system, which further improves the prognostic stratification of patients receiving NAC. Destination choice modeling has long been dominated by theory-based discrete choice models. Simultaneously, machine learning has demonstrated improved predictive performance to other fields of discrete choice modeling. The objective of this research was to compare machine learning models and a multinomial logit model in predicting destination choice. The models were assessed on their predictive performance using metrics for both binary classification and probabilistic classification. The results indicate that machine learning models, especially a random forest model, could bring improvements in prediction accuracy. The more data was used in training the models, the better the machine learning models tended to perform compared to the multinomial logit model. With less data, the multinomial logit model performed comparatively well. The findings are relevant for the field of destination choice modeling, where evidence on the use of machine learning models is very limited. In addition, the unbalanced choice sets of destination choice models with multiple non-chosen alternatives increases the need for further research in model fit and parameter tuning. Background: Aging is an inevitable biological process. Accelerated aging renders adults more susceptible to chronic diseases and increases their mortality rates. Previous studies have reported the relationship between lifestyle factors and phenotypic aging. However, the relationship between intrinsic factors, such as reproductive factors, and phenotypic aging remains unclear. Methods: This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), spanning from 1999 to 2010 and 2015–2018, with 14,736 adult women. Random forest imputation was used to handle missing covariate values in the final cohort. Weighted linear regression was utilized to analyze the relationship between women-specific reproductive factors and PhenoAgeAccel. Considering the potential impact of menopausal status on the results, additional analyses were conducted on premenopausal and postmenopausal participants. Additionally, the Life's Essential 8 (LE8) was used to investigate the impact of healthy lifestyle and other factors on the relationship between women-specific reproductive factors and PhenoAgeAccel. Stratified analyses were conducted based on significant interaction p-values. Results: In the fully adjusted models, delayed menarche and gynecological surgery were associated with increased PhenoAgeAccel, whereas pregnancy history were associated with a decrease. Additionally, early or late ages of menopause, first live birth, and last live birth can all negatively impact PhenoAgeAccel. The relationship between women-specific reproductive factors and PhenoAgeAccel differs between premenopausal and postmenopausal women. High LE8 scores positively impacted the relationship between certain reproductive factors (age at menarche, age at menopause, age at first live birth, and age at last live birth) and phenotypic age acceleration. Stratified analysis showed significant interactions for the following variables: BMI with age at menarche, pregnancy history, and age at menopause; ethnicity with age at menopause, age at first live birth, and parity; smoking status with use of contraceptive pills and gynecologic surgery; hypertension with use of contraceptive pills, pregnancy history, and age at menopause. Conclusion: Delayed menarche, gynecological surgery, and early or late ages of menopause, first live birth, and last live birth are associated with accelerated phenotypic aging. Background: Patients with airway stenosis (AS) are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality after lung transplantation (LTx). This study aims to develop and validate machine learning (ML) models to predict AS requiring clinical intervention in patients after LTx. Methods: Patients who underwent LTx between January 2017 and December 2019 were reviewed. The conventional logistic regression (LR) model was fitted by the independent risk factors which were determined by multivariate LR. The optimal ML model was determined based on 7 feature selection methods and 8 ML algorithms. Model performance was assessed by the area under the curve (AUC) and brier score, which were internally validated by the bootstrap method. Results: A total of 381 LTx patients were included, and 40 (10.5%) patients developed AS. Multivariate analysis indicated that male, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and postoperative 6-min walking test were significantly associated with AS (all P < 0.001). The conventional LR model showed performance with an AUC of 0.689 and brier score of 0.091. In total, 56 ML models were developed and the optimal ML model was the model fitted using a random forest algorithm with a determination coefficient feature selection method. The optimal model exhibited the highest AUC and brier score values of 0.760 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.666–0.864) and 0.085 (95% CI, 0.058–0.117) among all ML models, which was superior to the conventional LR model. Vascular plants are diverse and a major component of terrestrial ecosystems, yet their geographic distributions remain incomplete. Here, I present a global database of vascular plant distributions by integrating species distribution models calibrated to species' dispersal ability and natural habitats to predict native range maps for 201,681 vascular plant species into unsurveyed areas. Using these maps, I uncover unique patterns of native vascular plant diversity, endemism, and phylogenetic diversity revealing hotspots in underdocumented biodiversity-rich regions. These hotspots, based on detailed species-level maps, show a pronounced latitudinal gradient, strongly supporting the theory of increasing diversity toward the equator. I trained random forest models to extrapolate diversity patterns under unbiased global sampling and identify overlaps with modeled estimations but unveiled cryptic hotspots that were not captured by modeled estimations. Only 29% to 36% of extrapolated plant hotspots are inside protected areas, leaving more than 60% outside and vulnerable. However, the unprotected hotspots harbor species with unique attributes that make them good candidates for conservation prioritization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantification of bat communities and habitat heavily rely on non-invasive acoustic bat surveys the scope of which has greatly amplified with advances in remote monitoring technologies. Despite the unprecedented amount of acoustic data being collected, analysis of these data is often limited to simple species classification which provides little information on habitat function. Feeding buzzes, the rapid sequences of echolocation pulses emitted by bats during the terminal phase of prey capture, have historically been used to evaluate foraging habitat quality. Automated identification of feeding buzzes in recordings could benefit conservation by helping identify critical foraging habitat. I tested if detection of feeding buzzes in recordings could be automated with bat recordings from Ontario, Canada. Data were obtained using three different recording devices. The signal detection method involved sequentially scanning narrow frequency bands with the "Bioacoustics" R package signal detection algorithm, and extracting temporal and signal strength parameters from detections. Buzzes were best characterized by the standard deviation of the time between consecutive pulses, the average pulse duration, and the average pulse signal-to-noise ratio. Classification accuracy was highest with artificial neural networks and random forest algorithms. I compared each model's receiver operating characteristic curves and random forest provided better control over the false-positive rate so it was retained as the final model. When tested on a new dataset, buzzfindr's overall accuracy was 93.4% (95% CI: 91.5%– 94.9%). Overall accuracy was not affected by recording device type or species frequency group. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image change detection suffers from poor quality of the difference image and low detection accuracy. Hence, this paper proposes a SAR image change detection method based on a fused difference image and an optimized random forest scheme, termed LRN‐SSARF. Specifically, a fusion operator difference image LRN is proposed, which is generated using a weighted fusion of log‐ratio (LR), ratio (R), and normalized ratio (NoR). This difference image generation method reduces noise's influence. Then, the Otsu algorithm is applied to segment the difference image and select the training samples. The training samples are input into the random forest (RF) model optimised by the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) for training and classification. Finally, the region link is uesd to refine the detection results and generate the final result. The change detection results of six real SAR image scenes highlight that the proposed algorithm has a high detection accuracy, and affords appealing integrity and detailed information about the change regions. Specially, the detection accuracy advantage of the Bangladesh dataset is larger, with the accuracy and Kappa coefficient reaching 98.04% and 92.00%, much higher than the competitor methods. Insufficient spatiotemporal coverage of partial pressure of CO2 (p CO2) observations has hindered precise studies of the coastal carbon cycle along the North American Atlantic Coastal Ocean Margin (NAACOM). Earlier p CO2-products have encountered difficulties in accurately capturing the heterogeneity of regional variations and decadal trends of p CO2 in the NAACOM. This study developed a regional reconstructed p CO2-product for the NAACOM (Reconstructed Coastal Acidification Database- p CO2, or ReCAD-NAACOM- p CO2) using a two-step approach combining random forest regression and linear regression. The product provides monthly p CO2 data at 0.25° spatial resolution from 1993 to 2021, enabling investigation of regional spatial differences, seasonal cycles, and decadal changes in p CO2. The observation-based reconstruction was trained using Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) observations as ground-truth values, with various satellite-derived and reanalysis environmental variables known to control sea surface p CO2 as model inputs. The product shows high accuracy during the model training, validation, and independent test phases, demonstrating robustness and capability to accurately reconstruct p CO2 in regions or periods lacking direct observational data in the NAACOM. Compared with all the observation samples from SOCAT, the p CO2-product yields a determination coefficient of 0.83, a root-mean-square error of 18.64 µatm, and an accumulative uncertainty of 23.83 µatm. The ReCAD-NAACOM- p CO2 product demonstrates its capability to resolve seasonal cycles, regional-scale variations, and decadal linear trends of p CO2 along the NAACOM. This new product provides reliable p CO2 data for more precise studies of coastal carbon dynamics in the NAACOM region. Background: Accurately predicting ovulation timing is critical for women undergoing natural cycle-frozen embryo transfer. However, the precise predicting of the ovulation timing remains challenging due to the lack of consensus among different clinics regarding the definition of this significant event. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of preovulatory serum progesterone levels (P4) versus luteinizing hormone levels (LH) in predicting ovulation time using two machine learning models. Methods: 771 patients who underwent autologous natural cycle-frozen embryo transfer between January 2015 and February 2022 were recruited. Utilizing variables including follicle diameters, preovulatory serum levels of LH, E2, and P4, two machine learning models were constructed to predict the ovulation time, the importance of the variables in predicting ovulation timing was further ranked. Results: Two machine learning models have the capability to accurately predict the timing of ovulation, specifically within 72, 48, or 24 h. The overall accuracy rates of the validation dataset, as determined by the classification trees and random forest models, were found to be 78.83% and 85.28% respectively. Notably, when predicting ovulation within 24 h, the accuracy rate of P4 ≥ 0.65ng/ml exceeded 92%. Furthermore, it was important to consider LH or E2 levels in conjunction with P4 when assessing ovulation timing in cases where P4<0.65ng/ml. Conclusions: Preovulatory serum P4 levels are better predictors of ovulation timing than LH levels and could be used as an alternative in clinical settings, and the model we developed can be used to pinpoint the day of ovulation. Background: Culicoides biting midges exhibit a global spatial distribution and are the main vectors of several viruses of veterinary importance, including bluetongue (BT) and African horse sickness (AHS). Many environmental and anthropological factors contribute to their ability to live in a variety of habitats, which have the potential to change over the years as the climate changes. Therefore, as new habitats emerge, the risk for new introductions of these diseases of interest to occur increases. The aim of this study was to model distributions for two primary vectors for BT and AHS (Culicoides imicola and Culicoides bolitinos) using random forest (RF) machine learning and explore the relative importance of environmental and anthropological factors in a region of South Africa with frequent AHS and BT outbreaks. Methods: Culicoides capture data were collected between 1996 and 2022 across 171 different capture locations in the Western Cape. Predictor variables included climate-related variables (temperature, precipitation, humidity), environment-related variables (normalised difference vegetation index—NDVI, soil moisture) and farm-related variables (livestock densities). Random forest (RF) models were developed to explore the spatial distributions of C. imicola, C. bolitinos and a merged species map, where both competent vectors were combined. The maps were then compared to interpolation maps using the same capture data as well as historical locations of BT and AHS outbreaks. Results: Overall, the RF models performed well with 75.02%, 61.6% and 74.01% variance explained for C. imicola, C. bolitinos and merged species models respectively. Cattle density was the most important predictor for C. imicola and water vapour pressure the most important for C. bolitinos. Compared to interpolation maps, the RF models had higher predictive power throughout most of the year when species were modelled individually; however, when merged, the interpolation maps performed better in all seasons except winter. Finally, midge densities did not show any conclusive correlation with BT or AHS outbreaks. Conclusion: This study yielded novel insight into the spatial abundance and drivers of abundance of competent vectors of BT and AHS. Background: Premature ovarian failure (POF) is a clinical condition characterized by the cessation of ovarian function, leading to infertility. The underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear, and no predictable biomarkers have been identified. This study aimed to investigate the protein and metabolite contents of serum extracellular vesicles to investigate underlying molecular mechanisms and explore potential biomarkers. Methods: This study was conducted on a cohort consisting of 14 POF patients and 16 healthy controls. The extracellular vesicles extracted from the serum of each group were subjected to label-free proteomic and unbiased metabolomic analysis. Differentially expressed proteins and metabolites were annotated. Pathway network clustering was conducted with further correlation analysis. The biomarkers were confirmed by ROC analysis and random forest machine learning. Results: The proteomic and metabolomic profiles of POF patients and healthy controls were compared. Two subgroups of POF patients, Pre-POF and Pro-POF, were identified based on the proteomic profile, while all patients displayed a distinguishable metabolomic profile. Proteomic analysis suggested that inflammation serves as an early factor contributing to the infertility of POF patients. For the metabolomic analysis, despite the dysfunction of metabolism, oxidative stress and hormone imbalance were other key factors appearing in POF patients. Signaling pathway clustering of proteomic and metabolomic profiles revealed the progression of dysfunctional energy metabolism during the development of POF. Moreover, correlation analysis identified that differentially expressed proteins and metabolites were highly associated, with six of them being selected as potential biomarkers. ROC curve analysis, together with random forest machine learning, suggested that AFM combined with 2-oxoarginine was the best diagnostic biomarker for POF. Conclusions: Omics analysis revealed that inflammation, oxidative stress, and hormone imbalance are factors that damage ovarian tissue, but the progressive dysfunction of energy metabolism might be the critical pathogenic pathway contributing to the development of POF. Background: The congenital ventricular outflow tract malformations (CVOTMs) is a major congenital heart diseases (CHDs) subtype, and its pathogenesis is complex and unclear. Lipid metabolic plays a crucial role in embryonic cardiovascular development. However, due to the limited types of detectable metabolites in previous studies, findings on lipid metabolic and CHDs are still inconsistent, and the possible mechanism of CHDs remains unclear. Methods: The nest case-control study obtained subjects from the multicenter China Teratology Birth Cohort (CTBC), and maternal serum from the pregnant women enrolled during the first trimester was utilized. The subjects were divided into a discovery set and a validation set. The metabolomics of CVOTMs and normal fetuses were analyzed by targeted lipid metabolomics. Differential comparison, random forest and lasso regression were used to screen metabolic biomarkers. Results: The lipid metabolites were distributed differentially between the cases and controls. Setting the selection criteria of P value < 0.05, and fold change (FC) > 1.2 or < 0.833, we screened 70 differential metabolites. Within the prediction model by random forest and lasso regression, DG (14:0_18:0), DG (20:0_18:0), Cer (d18:2/20:0), Cer (d18:1/20:0) and LPC (0:0/18:1) showed good prediction effects in discovery and validation sets. Differential metabolites were mainly concentrated in glycerolipid and glycerophospholipids metabolism, insulin resistance and lipid & atherosclerosis pathways, which may be related to the occurrence and development of CVOTMs. Conclusion: Findings in this study provide a new metabolite data source for the research on CHDs. In this study, we evaluated the performance of various machine-learning models on multiple datasets labeled GR1, GR2, GR3, GR4, and GR5. We assessed the models using a range of evaluation metrics, including AUC, CA, F1, precision, recall, MCC, specificity, and log loss. The models examined were logistic regression, decision tree, kNN, random forest, gradient boosting, neural network, AdaBoost, and stochastic gradient descent. The results indicate that all models consistently demonstrated outstanding performance across all datasets, with most achieving perfect scores in all metrics. The models exhibited high accuracy and effectiveness in accurately classifying instances. Although random forests displayed slightly lower scores in some metrics, theyi still maintained an overall high level of accuracy. The findings highlight the models' ability to effectively learn the underlying patterns within the data and make accurate predictions. The low log loss values further confirmed the models' precise estimation of probabilities. Cancer ranks among the most lethal illnesses worldwide, and predicting its onset can be a crucial factor in enhancing people's quality of life by taking preventive measures to improve treatment and survival. This study conducted comparative research to determine the machine learning model with the highest accuracy for tumor type classification, distinguishing between malignant (cancer) and benign tumors. The models evaluated include decision tree (DT), naive bayes (NB), extra trees classifier (ETM), random forest (RF), K-means clustering (K-means), logistic regression (LR), adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), gradient boosting (GB), light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) to identify the one with the best accuracy. The models were trained using a dataset of 569 records and a total of 32 variables, containing patient information and tumor characteristics. The study was structured into sections, such as related studies, descriptions of the models, case study development, results, discussion, and conclusions. The models' performance was evaluated based on metrics of precision, sensitivity, accuracy, and F1 score. Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) maps are important tools for environmental planning and social-ecological modeling, as they provide critical information for evaluating risks, managing natural resources, and facilitating effective decision-making. This study aimed to generate a very high spatial resolution (0.5 m) and detailed (21 classes) LULC map for the greater Mariño watershed (Peru) in 2019, using the MORINGA processing chain. This new method for LULC mapping consisted in a supervised object-based LULC classification, using the random forest algorithm along with multi-sensor satellite imagery from which spectral and textural predictors were derived (a very high spatial resolution Pléiades image and a time serie of high spatial resolution Sentinel-2 images). The random forest classifier showed a very good performance and the LULC map was further improved through additional post-treatment steps that included cross-checking with external GIS data sources and manual correction using photointerpretation, resulting in a more accurate and reliable map. The final LULC provides new information for environmental management and monitoring in the greater Mariño watershed. With this study we contribute to the efforts to develop standardized and replicable methodologies for high-resolution and high-accuracy LULC mapping, which is crucial for informed decision-making and conservation strategies. Objective: A non-invasive method using plasma microRNAs provides new insights into thyroid cancer diagnosis. The objective of this study was to discover potential circulating biomarkers of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) through the analysis of plasma miRNAs using next-generation sequencing (NGS). Methods: Plasma miRNAs were isolated from peripheral blood samples collected from healthy individuals, patients diagnosed with PTC, and those with benign thyroid nodules. The Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform was employed to establish the miRNA expression profiles. Candidate miRNAs for diagnostic purposes were identified utilizing the Random Forest (RF) algorithm. The selected miRNAs were subsequently validated in an independent validation set using RT-qPCR. Results: NGS results revealed consistent plasma miRNA expression patterns among healthy individuals and patients with benign thyroid nodules in the discovery set (6 healthy cases, 17 benign cases), while differing significantly from those observed in the PTC group (17 PTC cases). Seven miRNAs exhibiting significant expression differences were identified and utilized to construct an RF classifier. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis for PTC diagnosis, and the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.978. Subsequent KEGG and GO analyses of the target genes associated with these 7 miRNAs highlighted pathways relevant to tumors and the cell cycle. Independent validation through RT-qPCR in a separate cohort (15 CONTROL, 15 PTC groups) underscored hsa- miR-301a-3p and hsa-miR-195-5p as promising candidates for PTC diagnosis. Snow avalanches are the primary mountain hazard for mechanized skiing operations. Helicopter and snowcat ski guides are tasked with finding safe terrain to provide guests with enjoyable skiing in a fast-paced and highly dynamic and complex decision environment. Based on years of experience, ski guides have established systematic decision-making practices that streamline the process and limit the potential negative influences of time pressure and emotional investment. While this expertise is shared within guiding teams through mentorship, the current lack of a quantitative description of the process prevents the development of decision aids that could strengthen the process. To address this knowledge gap, we collaborated with guides at Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) Galena Lodge to catalogue and analyze their decision-making process for the daily run list, where they code runs as green (open for guiding), red (closed), or black (not considered) before heading into the field. To capture the real-world decision-making process, we first built the structure of the decision-making process with input from guides, and then used a wide range of available relevant data indicative of run characteristics, current conditions, and prior run list decisions to create the features of the models. We employed three different modelling approaches to capture the run list decision-making process: Bayesian Network, Random Forest, and Extreme Gradient Boosting. The overall accuracies of the models are 84.6 %, 91.9 %, and 93.3 % respectively, compared to a testing dataset of roughly 20,000 observed run codes. The insights of our analysis provide a baseline for the development of effective decision support tools for backcountry avalanche risk management that can offer independent perspectives on operational terrain choices based on historic patterns or as a training tool for newer guides. Purpose: To identify the key risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in urological inpatients based on the Caprini scale using an interpretable machine learning method. Methods: VTE risk data of urological inpatients were obtained based on the Caprini scale in the case hospital. Based on the data, the Boruta method was used to further select the key variables from the 37 variables in the Caprini scale. Furthermore, decision rules corresponding to each risk level were generated using the rough set (RS) method. Finally, random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and backpropagation artificial neural network (BPANN) were used to verify the data accuracy and were compared with the RS method. Results: Following the screening, the key risk factors for VTE in urology were "(C1) Age," "(C2) Minor Surgery planned," "(C3) Obesity (BMI > 25)," "(C8) Varicose veins," "(C9) Sepsis (< 1 month)," (C10) "Serious lung disease incl. pneumonia (< 1month) " (C11) COPD," "(C16) Other risk," "(C18) Major surgery (> 45 min)," "(C19) Laparoscopic surgery (> 45 min)," "(C20) Patient confined to bed (> 72 h)," "(C18) Malignancy (present or previous)," "(C23) Central venous access," "(C31) History of DVT/PE," "(C32) Other congenital or acquired thrombophilia," and "(C34) Stroke (< 1 month." According to the decision rules of different risk levels obtained using the RS method, "(C1) Age," "(C18) Major surgery (> 45 minutes)," and "(C21) Malignancy (present or previous)" were the main factors influencing mid- and high-risk levels, and some suggestions on VTE prevention were indicated based on these three factors. The average accuracies of the RS, RF, SVM, and BPANN models were 79.5%, 87.9%, 92.6%, and 97.2%, respectively. In addition, BPANN had the highest accuracy, recall, F1-score, and precision. Conclusions: The RS model achieved poorer accuracy than the other three common machine learning models. However, the RS model provides strong interpretability and allows for the identification of high-risk factors and decision rules influencing high-risk assessments of VTE in urology. Developing advanced systems for 3D brain tissue segmentation from neonatal magnetic resonance (MR) images is vital for newborn structural analysis. However, automatic segmentation of neonatal brain tissues is challenging due to smaller head size and inverted T1/T2 tissue contrast compared to adults. In this work, a subject-specific atlas based technique is presented for segmentation of gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from neonatal MR images. It involves atlas selection, subject-specific atlas creation using random forest (RF) classifier, and brain tissue segmentation using the expectation maximization-Markov random field (EM-MRF) method. To increase the segmentation accuracy, different tissue intensity- and gradient-based features were used. Evaluation on 40 neonatal MR images (gestational age of 37–44 weeks) demonstrated an overall accuracy of 94.3% and an average Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 0.945 (GM), 0.947 (WM), and 0.912 (CSF). Compared to multi-atlas segmentation methods like SEGMA and EM-MRF with multiple atlases, our method improved accuracy by up to 4%, particularly in complex tissue regions. Our proposed method allows accurate brain tissue segmentation, a crucial step in brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications including brain surface reconstruction and realistic head model creation in neonates. The use of targeted agents in the treatment of pediatric low-grade gliomas (pLGGs) relies on the determination of molecular status. It has been shown that genetic alterations in pLGG can be identified non-invasively using MRI-based radiomic features or convolutional neural networks (CNNs). We aimed to build and assess a combined radiomics and CNN non-invasive pLGG molecular status identification model. This retrospective study used the tumor regions, manually segmented from T2-FLAIR MR images, of 336 patients treated for pLGG between 1999 and 2018. We designed a CNN and Random Forest radiomics model, along with a model relying on a combination of CNN and radiomic features, to predict the genetic status of pLGG. Additionally, we investigated whether CNNs could predict radiomic feature values from MR images. The combined model (mean AUC: 0.824) outperformed the radiomics model (0.802) and CNN (0.764). The differences in model performance were statistically significant (p-values < 0.05). The CNN was able to learn predictive radiomic features such as surface-to-volume ratio (average correlation: 0.864), and difference matrix dependence non-uniformity normalized (0.924) well but was unable to learn others such as run-length matrix variance (− 0.017) and non-uniformity normalized (− 0.042). Our results show that a model relying on both CNN and radiomic-based features performs better than either approach separately in differentiating the genetic status of pLGGs, and that CNNs are unable to express all handcrafted features. Air quality is a fundamental component of a healthy environment for human beings. Monitoring networks for air pollution have been established in numerous industrial zones. The data collected by the pervasive monitoring devices can be utilized not only for determining the current environmental condition, but also for forecasting it in the near future. This paper considers the applications of different machine learning methods for the prediction of the two most widely used quantities. Particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of 2.5 and 10 µm, respectively. The data are collected via a proprietary monitoring station, designated as the Ecolumn. The Ecolumn monitors a number of key parameters, including temperature, pressure, humidity, PM 1.0, PM 2.5, and PM 10, in a timely manner. The data were employed in the development of multiple models based on selected machine learning methods. The decision tree, random forest, recurrent neural network, and long short-term memory models were employed. Experiments were conducted with varying hyperparameters and network architectures. Different time scales (10 min, 1 h, and 24 h) were examined. The most optimal results were observed for the Long Short-Term Memory algorithm when utilizing the shortest available time spans (shortest averaging times). The decision tree and random forest algorithms demonstrated unexpectedly high performance for long averaging times, exhibiting only a slight decline in accuracy compared to neural networks for shorter averaging times. Soft robots have the advantage of adaptability and flexibility in various scenarios and tasks due to their inherent flexibility and mouldability, which makes them highly promising for real‐world applications. The development of electronic skin (E‐skin) perception systems is crucial for the advancement of soft robots. However, achieving both exteroceptive and proprioceptive capabilities in E‐skins, particularly in terms of decoupling and classifying sensing signals, remains a challenge. This study presents an E‐skin with mixed electronic and ionic conductivity that can simultaneously achieve exteroceptive and proprioceptive, based on the resistance response of conductive hydrogels. It is integrated with soft robots to enable state perception, with the sensed signals further decoded using the machine learning model of decision trees and random forest algorithms. The results demonstrate that the newly developed hydrogel sensing system can accurately predict attitude changes in soft robots when subjected to varying degrees of pressing, hot pressing, bending, twisting, and stretching. These findings that multifunctional hydrogels combine with machine learning to decode signals may serve as a basis for improving the sensing capabilities of intelligent soft robots in future advancements. Objective To construct a postpartum depression risk prediction model for multi - ethnic population in Yunnan Province of China, and identify predictive factors. Methods Women who were 42 days and within 1 year after childbirth were screened, and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS M 9) was used for postpartum depression. 52 influencing factors from economics, social psychology, obstetrics, neonatology, spouse and family dynamics and other characteristics were included in the survey. A random forest algorithm was employed to construct a predictive model for postnatal depression risk in the multi 一 ethnic population of Yunnan Province. The model was evaluated on test sets with accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (Area Under Curve, AUC) to assess its performance. Results A total of 459 women were analyzed, with a postpartum depression detection rate of 11. 55%. Among them, the detection rates for Han, Zhuang and other ethnic minorities were 7. 56%, 13. 94% and 13.92%, respectively. The top 14 variables in terms of importance scores were: anxiety, history of previous negative emotions, marital relationship, family support level, physical and mental exhaustion in caring for newborns, pregnancy risk classification, mother - infant rooming - in, feeding mode, education level, spouse's education level, frequency of nighttime newborn care, ethnicity, parity and age. The accuracy was 92.74%, specificity was 95. 50%, sensitivity was 69.23%, positive predictive value was 64. 29%, negative predictive value was 96. 36%, and the AUC value was 0. 925, using Han, Zhuang, and other ethnic minorities as validation sets respectively. The model also demonstrated good stability. Conclusion The random forest algorithm 一 based postpartum depression risk prediction model for the multi 一 ethnic population in Yunnan performed well, which can be utilized to predict risk factors for postpartum depression among women in minority ethnic areas, thereby facilitating targeted intervention measures. The energy consumption of air-jet looms mainly comes from air compressors. Predicting the air consumption of air-jet looms for the upcoming period is significant for the variable frequency adjustment of air compressors, thereby aiding in energy saving and reducing fabric costs. This paper proposes an innovative method that combines Sliding Time Windows (STW), feature analysis, and incremental learning to improve the accuracy of short-term air consumption prediction. First, the STW method is employed during the data collection phase to enhance data reliability. Through feature analysis, significant factors affecting the air consumption of air-jet looms, beyond traditional research, are explored and incorporated into the prediction model. The experimental results indicate that the introduction of new features improved the model's R2 from 0.905 to 0.950 and reduced the MSE from 32.369 to 16.239. The STW method applied to the same random forest model increased the R2 from 0.906 to 0.950 and decreased the MSE from 32.244 to 16.239. The decision tree method, compared to the linear regression model, improved the R2 from 0.928 to 0.950 and reduced the MSE from 23.541 to 16.239, demonstrating significant predictive performance enhancement. After establishing the optimal model, incremental learning is used to continuously improve the reliability and accuracy of short-term predictions. Experiments show that the incremental learning method, compared to static models, offers better resilience and reliability when new data are collected. The proposed method significantly improves the accuracy of air consumption prediction for air-jet looms, providing strong support for the variable frequency adjustment of air compressors, and contributes to the goals of energy saving and cost reduction.
