The article discusses the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the need for a tracking system to measure progress in preserving biodiversity CBD goals. It notes the need for a comprehensive and rigorous list of biodiversity indicators to allow for such monitoring. It lists the 22 indicators established in the CBD and comments on their completeness and issues regarding data gaps, data consistency, and relevance. It notes that indicators cannot be developed without reliable biodiversity data and calls for revisions to indicators to make the situation more clear to policy-makers.
