As survey researchers have begun exploiting paradata—for example, for the correction of nonresponse bias—the quality of these data has come into question. Inaccurate information is likely to affect the resulting statistics and conclusions drawn from such data. This paper focuses on one type of paradata, observations made by interviewers during the data-collection process, and assesses the quality of these observations by examining their measurement error properties. The analysis uses the UK Census Nonresponse Link Study, which links interviewers’ observations collected on six major UK surveys with Census data. Comparing five interviewer observations with self-reports from the Census, the accuracy of the observations for both respondents and nonrespondents to the surveys is evaluated. A multilevel modeling approach is used to explore under which conditions the interviewers’ observations match the reports on the Census forms, accounting for the clustering of sample members within interviewers and areas. The analysis finds that the overall percent agreement between the observations and the Census is generally high, ranging from 87 to 98 percent. The type of housing structure and the final result code are significantly associated with measurement error. For four of the five observations, there is evidence that the interviewer significantly influences the level of measurement error, even after controlling for household, interviewer, and area characteristics. While the first of the questions posed in the title of this article may seem to involve a simple matter of enumeration, it is more complex than that, as the number of institutions in the United Kingdom that perform at least some of the functions of a university has grown significantly in recent years. The answer given (for the end of the year 2010) is 108, 138 or 162, depending upon the definitions adopted. The article presents information on the condition of Great Britain's toy industry in the nineteenth-century. The author says that the children's toy industry has been virtually ignored. The author says that for most of the nineteenth-century children, particularly those from poor homes or rural areas, commercially produced toys were virtually unknown luxuries. This still remained the case by the end of the century even after three decades of rising prosperity. Also, the British toy industry has been overlooked because, in the main, toys tended to be imported, especially from Switzerland, France and Germany. Domestic makers may have provided the bulk of the cheaper goods retailed either directly or through street vendors but even at this end of the market foreign competition was fierce, especially in small wooden toys. In general, imported goods formed the main stock of the specialist toy shops, which emerged during the eighteenth century, particularly in London where both the size and wealth of the population ensured a viable if somewhat elastic level of demand. Also, it is easy to overlook the existence of the toy industry because it was very small compared to the industrial giants on which Britain's economic prosperity rested.

Objectives. To describe changes in the provision of rheumatology services, monitor the pattern of inequalities in UK rheumatology service provision since 2005, and to summarize the 3-yr impact of the new National Health Service (NHS) consultant contract and the Musculoskeletal Services Framework in England and Wales. Methods. Questionnaires about timetable and working conditions were sent to all consultants on the BSR/ARC UK Workforce Register in January 2007, along with the personal and job-related details currently held about them on the register to update. The questionnaire included a visual analogue scale asking ‘how concerned are you that your current post might be under threat’ ranging from 0 ‘Not at all’ to 100 ‘Extremely’. Results. The response rate of the 2005 and 2007 surveys were 89 and 87%, respectively. Levels of optimal provision now exceed 70% in England and Wales, and 50% in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Levels of provision remain substantially higher in London than anywhere else. The median level of perceived job threat in the UK was 31 (interquartile range 11–61). Consultants in areas where provision is highest and a higher proportion of services are run in conjunction with Clinical Assessment and Treatment (CAT) centres report higher perceived job threat. Conclusions. Provision of rheumatology services has continued to expand over the past decade; however, inequalities persist at national and sub-national level. There is evidence of improvement in regions with the lowest provision, but there are indications of increased perceived job threat in areas with traditionally higher provision and where CAT centres have been introduced. : Background Little is known about where teenagers and young adults receive their first cancer treatment. : Method We extracted data on 2260 residents of southeast England diagnosed with a malignant neoplasm aged 10–24 between 1998 and 2002 from the Thames Cancer Registry database. We identified 11 cancer network areas of residence, and the hospital and network where each patient received their first chemotherapy treatment. We classified hospitals as those including paediatric oncology centres, cancer centres with a teenage cancer unit or adult cancer centres or units. We examined how many patients in each of the age groups 10–14, 15–19 and 20–24 travelled outside their network of residence for chemotherapy. : Results Overall 45% (1018) received chemotherapy. Three networks had paediatric oncology centres, and one also had a teenage cancer unit. Most 10–14-year-olds were referred from their network of residence to networks with these services. However, there was an increasing tendency for patients aged 15–19 and 20–24 to be treated within their network of residence and to be referred less commonly. : Conclusions Many young people with cancer are not referred to services providing care tailored to the needs of their age group. The absence of any pattern to referral, despite the presence of a teenage cancer unit in the area, suggests a lack of coordinated referral practice within and between cancer networks. "Anecdotal evidence" has become a central point of contention in two recent controversies over science and technology (We follow Nelkin (1992, 10) in referring to our cases as controversies over science and technology.) in the United Kingdom and a contact point between individuals, expert institutions, and policy decisions. We argue that the term is central to the management of the boundary between experts and nonexperts, with consequences for ideas of public engagement and participation. This article reports on two separate pieces of qualitative social research into recent UK public risk controversies with the aim of unfolding the processes by which anecdotal evidence comes to be defined. We do not define anecdotal evidence as an epistemic category that exists prior to the public controversies themselves; rather, we aim to show how the term is constructed and contested by expert and nonexpert actors. We find that anecdotal evidence comes to be accepted (albeit in different ways) by the main actors as an epistemic category, yet that it is multidimensional, open to interpretation as subjective reports, as an indicator of expert ignorance, as a source of novel hypotheses and as a set of political claims for recognition and inclusion. We conclude that the flexibility of anecdotal evidence at the boundary between science and its publics can offer opportunities for participation and engagement, as well as exclusion and alienation.
