Objectives: Deceased-donor kidney transplant is unique among surgical procedures that are an urgent procedure performed in an elective population. It has not been possible to accurately determine when a given patient will be called for transplant. Patients on the active transplant list can be called for a transplant at any time. As a result, every effort must be made to optimize their health according to best practices and published clinical practice guidelines., Materials and Methods: Once the patient is placed on the transplant wait list after undergoing an initial extensive evaluation, continued surveillance is required. Therefore, we developed a kidney transplant wait list surveillance software program that alerts organ transplant coordinator on time regarding which patients need a work-up., Results: The new designed software has a database of our waiting patients with their completed and pending controls. The software also has built-in functions to warn the responsible staff with an E-mail. If one of the controls of a recipient delayed, the software sends an automated E-mail to the staff regarding the patients delayed controls. The software is a Web application that works on any platform with a Web browser and Internet connection and allows access by multiple users. The software has been developed with NET platform. The database is SQL server. The software has the following functions: patient communication info, search, alert list, alert E-mail, control entry, and system management., Conclusions: As of January 2014, a total of 21 000 patients were registered on the National Kidney Transplant wait list in Turkey and the kidney transplant wait list had been expanding by 2000 to 3000 patients each year. Therefore computerized wait list programs are crucial to help to transplant centers to keep their patients up-to-date on time.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the symptoms observed during admission to palliative care in patients that would be provided palliative support, to measure their intensity, and to evaluate the effect of palliative care on patient symptoms by recording changes during the first week after admission to hospital., Methods: The sample of the study was determined as 108 according to the population mean significance test conducted by using preliminary application data. Patients who were able to complete the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale during admission to hospital, on the 3(rd) and 7(th) days of hospitalization were included into the evaluation. The Introductory Characteristics Questionnaire, Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale and Palliative Performance Scale were used for the collection of the data., Results: While 50% of the patients defined pain intensity as 5 and over during admission, this rate was determined to be 6.5% on the 7(th) day. Mean values of the symptoms of pain, insomnia, loss of appetite, and status of well-being decreased significantly on the 3(rd) and 7(th) days after admission compared to the time of admission to the hospital. Besides, no statistically significant difference was found among the symptoms of nausea, anxiety, shortness of breath, and constipation., Conclusion: In this study, it was determined that the intensity of symptoms deteriorating the life quality of cancer patients such as pain, fatigue, insomnia, loss of appetite, and status of well-being improved rapidly with palliative care support.

The aim of this study was to identify possible relationships between biochemical- superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and chemical (Hg, Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe) contaminants from relatively clean area (Middle Bay) and heavily polluted area (Inner Bay) of the Izmir Bay. Sampling of mussels was performed in the beginning of May 2004. Mussel digestive glands have been used for biochemical assays. Trace metal content was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer using standard procedures. Metal contents in mussels collected at polluted site increased compared to the middle part of the bay. While there was a positive correlation between metals and SOD enzyme activity, there was a negative correlation between metals and GPx enzyme activity. An increase was observed in SOD enzyme activity and a decrease of GPx enzyme activity at the inner part of the bay.

Background: Death is an abstract concept that extends over life. Although it is a natural part of life, people have difficulty coming to terms with it. Objective: This study was investigated the effect of fear of COVID-19 on nursing students' attitudes towards death and the care of dying patients. Results: The study is descriptive and cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 250 nursing students from two universities in Turkey. The data were collected using Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire, Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S), the Death Attitude Profile (DAP) and Frommelt Attitude Toward the Care of the Dying Scale (FATCOD). Conclusion: Female students have more fear of COVID-19 than male students. Students with a high fear of COVID-19 have more positive attitudes towards death and caring for the dying individual. While it was determined that the COVID-19 pandemic affected nursing students in many ways, it was concluded that the fear of COVID-19 had an effect on attitudes of nursing students related to end-of-life care and death. Background: The status of nurses who form the backbone of the health system, and the society's perspective on nursing has undergone serious transformations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The visibility of nurses, who constantly fought on the front lines in the harsh conditions of the pandemic, increased even more in this period. Thus, this study was aimed at determining Turkish people's perception of nursing during the COVID-19 pandemic and investigating whether there is a significant relationship between the mean score obtained from the Nursing Image Scale and the descriptive variables. Method: The sample of this cross-sectional study consisted of 420 Turkish citizens. The "Descriptive Characteristics Form" and "Nursing Image Scale" were used to collect data. In addition to descriptive analysis, the t-test and One-Way ANOVA test were used. Results: Turkish people's nursing image during the COVID-19 pandemic was highly positive. Individuals who stated that they had a chronic disease perceived nursing as a professional occupation, which transformed their current nursing image to a more positive image during the COVID-19 pandemic and the mean score they obtained from the Nursing Image Scale was statistically significantly high. Conclusion: We concluded that Turkish people's perceptions of nurses changed for the better during the pandemic and their awareness of nursing improved. It is the nurses' responsibility to improve the nursing image of the society. AIM: One of the most common problems in individuals receiving neurotoxic chemotherapy is neuropathy. The study aimed to evaluate the peripheral neuropathy and the relationship between neuropathy, disability, and anxiety in patients receiving neurotoxic chemotherapy. METHODS: The sample of the study consisted of individuals with cancer in the chemotherapy unit of a city hospital between March and July 2021. The study was conducted in 180 patients who underwent at least three cycles of neurotoxic chemotherapy and agreed to participate. The Introductory Information Form, Brief Disability Questionnaire, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events were used to collect data. RESULTS: The prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in patients undergoing neurotoxic chemotherapy was 73.3% in this study. According to the severity of peripheral neuropathy, disability and anxiety scores of the patients showed a significant difference (p < .001). A positive, moderate significant correlation was determined between the scores for anxiety and disability. The variables affecting the neuropathy levels of individuals receiving chemotherapy were determined as marital status (odds ratio=0.239), number of cycles (odds ratio=0.125), and anxiety levels (odds ratio=1.076). CONCLUSION: The results of the present study indicated that the frequency of neuropathy was high and the severity of neuropathy was associated with anxiety and disability levels. Purpose: This study was conducted to determine nursing student attitudes towards ageism, their willingness to care for older adults, their level of care quality perception, and to examine the relationships between them. Material and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. The study was conducted at four different universities in Turkiye. The population for the research consisted of fourth-year students studying in the nursing departments of four different universities in 2020 - 2021 academic year. Data were collected using the Student Information Form, Ageism Attitude Scale, Elderly Patient Care Inventory, and Caring Behaviors Inventory-24. In the data analysis, independent samples t-test, ANOVA and Spearman Correlation were used. Results: Students had positive attitudes towards ageism. There were positive relationships between ageism with perception of care quality and willingness to care for older adults. It was determined that there was a positive and statistically advanced relationship between the willingness to care for the elderly and the attitude of ageism (r=0.48; p<0.001). It was determined that there was a positive and significant relationship (r=0.49; p<0.001) between age discrimination and the level of perception of quality of care. There was no statistically significant relationship between students' willingness to care for the elderly and their caring behaviors (r=0.18; p>0.05), but there was a significant relationship between the sub-dimension of commitment (r=0.24; p<0.05). Conclusion: The increases in students' positive attitudes towards ageism, their perception of the quality of care and willingness to care for the elderly are positive in parallel. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to evaluate the operation results of patients who were followed up due to breast cancer and were operated on due to gynecological pathologies or for prophylactic purposes, and determine the distribution of gynecological pathologies in breast cancer patients STUDY DESIGN: Patients with breast cancer who had gynecological surgery in our institution between December 2015 and January 2023 were retrospectively analyzed in this cross-sectional study. The pathological reports and medical records of the included patients were obtained from the gynecologic oncology electronic database system and the patient files. The study is approved by the institution's local ethics committee. RESULTS: Totally 57 patients with a history of breast cancer had gynecological operations between December 2015 and January 2023. The median age of the patients was 49. Benign pathologies were detected in the majority of patients with a history of breast cancer, this rate was found to be 87.7%. The pathology revealed malignant/premalignant disease in seven (12.2%) patients. Among these seven patients, four patients had malignant disease one patient had microinvasive cervical cancer, one patient had ovarian serous cancer, one patient had cervical and ovarian metastasis of breast cancer, and one patient had ovarian metastasis of breast cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with a history of breast cancer have increased rates of gynecological pathology development compared to the normal population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rational drug use is a pivotal concept linked with morbidity and mortality. Immigration plays a significant role as a determinant affecting individuals' health-related attitudes, behaviors, and the pursuit of health services. Within this context, the study was initiated to assess the factors influencing health literacy and rational drug use among Syrian immigrants in Istanbul. A cross-sectional study was undertaken on 542 Syrian adults utilizing a three-part questionnaire encompassing sociodemographics, rational drug use, and the e-health literacy scale (eHEALS). With an average age of 39.19 ± 13.10 years, a majority of participants believed medications should solely be doctor-prescribed (97%) and opposed keeping antibiotics at home (93.7%). Yet, 62.5% thought excessive herbal medicine use was harmless. The mean eHEALS score stood at 20.57 ± 7.26, and factors like age, marital status, income, and duration of stay in Turkey influenced e-health literacy. Associations were seen between low e-health literacy and being female, being older, having a lower education level, and regular medication use. Syrian immigrants displayed proper knowledge concerning antibiotics yet exhibited gaps in their understanding of general drug usage, treatment adherence, and herbal medicines. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effects of web-based education on nursing students' learning of the nursing process. Method: The study was conducted in a nursing faculty. The population of the study consisted of 90 students. The control and implementation groups were determined by drawing lots. The traditional classroom education method was used in the control group for teaching the nursing process. In the implementation group, web-based education was used in addition to traditional classroom education. "Identification Form", "Nursing Process Knowledge Form", "Visual Analog Scale", "Nursing Process Assessment Form" and the software program developed on the web were used to collect data. Means, standard deviation, number, percentile, independent two samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square test and Brunner-Langer test were used in the analysis of the data. Results: The mean age of students was 20.77±2.25 in the implementation group and 20.70±1.35 in the control group. Of the students, 77.3% in the implementation group and 89.1% in the control group were females. According to 63.3% of the students, the nursing education they received was sufficient. The students in the implementation group were satisfied with the education method used in teaching the nursing process (p<0.005) and their nursing process application skill scores were higher than those of the students in the control group. Conclusion: The web-based education positively contributed to nursing students' learning of the nursing process and improved the nursing process application skills of the students in the implementation group at higher levels. Background: Intensive care units are directly associated with the competency level of nurses and are units where ethical problems are frequently experienced. This research aims to determine the relationship between intensive care nurses' ethical attitudes and holistic competence levels. Methods: This study was conducted as a cross-sectional design using self-report questionnaires distributed to 131 intensive care nurses in Turkey. The data of the study were collected with the "Nurses Information Form," "Holistic Nursing Competence Scale" and "Ethical Attitude Scale for Nursing Care". Results: The total mean score of the Holistic Nursing Competence of the nurses was 6.89±0.95. Holistic Nursing Competence level was significantly lower for those who had experienced less than one year in the profession, and it was higher for those who worked in the emergency intensive care unit and the nurses whose clinics had 21 and above nurses. The total mean score of the nurses' ethics attitude toward nursing care was 59.36±29.09. Ethical Attitude for Nursing Care was significantly lower for those who had a master's degree, and the nurses whose clinics had 21 and above nurses scored higher. There was a weak and negative correlation between the nurses' Holistic Nursing Competence Scale and the total mean score of the Ethical Attitude Scale for Nursing Care. The ethical attitude was predicted in 13.2% of the Holistic Nursing Competence of nurses. Conclusions: It was concluded that nurses' holistic competence levels were high, their ethical attitudes were negative, and there was a weak negative correlation between their holistic competence levels and their ethical attitudes toward care. Background: Cigarette pack design plays a crucial role in attracting customers, especially when other marketing methods are limited by policy. University students who engage in casual smoking take the risk of developing an addiction. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of plain packaging (PP) and graphic health warnings (GHWs) on cigarette packages on three outcome variables (negative affect, avoidant responses, and intentions to quit) among ever-smoker university students in Ankara, Turkey, where youth smoking prevalence is high. Methods: An online survey-based experiment was used to collect data. The respondents were randomly assigned to one of the five conditions that contained images of cigarette packs with specific design elements. Regression analyses (n = 623) were used to compare across conditions and to estimate the effects of combined warnings (versus text-only warnings), stronger GHWs (versus old GHWs), and PP (versus branded packages) on the outcome variables, accounting for potential confounders. Results: Stronger GHWs generated more negative affect (0.31 points out of 5, p = 0.010) and avoidant responses (0.42 points out of 5, p = 0.002) than old warnings (when brand logos were visible). Plain packages generated more negative affect (0.48 points out of 5, p < 0.001) and avoidant responses (0.46 points out of 5, p = 0.001) than branded packages (with old warnings). Disentangling the effects of PP and new GHWs revealed that neither had individual differential effect on intentions to quit within 6 months. Conclusions: Although no differential effect of PP or harsher GHWs was found on intentions to quit when respondents were exposed to images on screen, both design elements were found to be effective in generating negative affect and avoidant responses. Objective: The determination of nutritional knowledge and nutrition literacy among nursing students will enable nursing departments to establish the needs and solutions to enhance nutrition education in their education programs. Therefore, this study is aimed to evaluate the nutrition literacy and nutrition knowledge level of nursing students. Method: The study data were collected with 'Information Form', 'Anthropometric Measurements', 'Nutrition Knowledge Level Scale for Adults', and 'Evaluation Instrument of Nutrition Literacy on Adults'. Analyzes were performed using descriptive and nonparametric tests. Results: The score of nutrition knowledge is 56.6 ± 6.8 and 50.5% of them have a good nutrition knowledge level. The total nutrition literacy score is 28.6 ± 4.4 and 91.6% of them have a sufficient nutrition literacy level. It was no significant difference between students' characteristic features and nutrition knowledge score and nutrition literacy total score (p > 0.05). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the nutrition knowledge score and the nutrition literacy total score and the nutrition literacy sub-sections scores (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It has been determined that the nutrition knowledge and nutrition literacy levels of nursing students correlated with each other. To improve students' nutrition knowledge levels, as well as to improve their nutrition literacy and prevent non-communicable diseases nutrition lessons should be included in the curriculum. Results: The most commonly used diagnoses by students included impaired sleep pattern, lack of knowledge, and risk of infection. However, it was observed that none of the students made any diagnoses related to the activities of controlling body temperature, working and playing, or expressing sexuality. Conclusions: It was concluded that the students did not collect enough data related to the activity of expressing sexuality, had difficulty collecting data related to elimination, and had a moderately negative perception of nursing diagnoses. Background: Barriers to palliative care can also be seen during the nursing education period. Assessment is needed to determine whether the training program for palliative care in nursing education is effective. Objectives: This study was conducted to determine validity and reliability of The Palliative Care Self-Reported Practices Scale (PCPS) and The Palliative Care Difficulties Scale (PCDS) in Turkey. Methodology: This study comparative study included a correlational method to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of PCDS and PCPS. The sample group of the study was composed of 346 nurses and nursing students. The data were obtained by using the Nurse/Nursing Student Information Form, PCDS and PCPS. Results: The total Cronbach α of the PDCS was .81, the total factor loading was 0.64-0.92 and the total variance was 68.8%. The total Cronbach α of the PCPS was 0 .91, the total factor loading was 0.58-0.87, and the total variance explained was 76.5%. As a result of the PDCS factor analysis, we determined the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin coefficient as 0.74, the Barlett test χ² as 1903.117 and as a result of the adolescent form factor analysis, we determined the KMO as 0.89, and the Barlett test χ² as 3711.049. Conclusion: This study suggests that PCDS and PCPS are valid and reliable instruments for measuring palliative care difficulties and self-reported palliative care practices. Background: Violence is a community mental health problem and the trouble of human rights. The rates of violence against women are very high in the World and Turkey. Aim: This study was conducted to determine how men define domestic violence against women. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 160 men who worked in Söktaş Textile Factory between December 2015 and March 2016. In the collection of data, data collection form which was prepared by the researchers according to the literature, percentage, frequency and chi-square test was used in data analysis. Results: 91.9% of men stated that if they were preferred the chances they would not want to be opposite sex and 36.9% of men do not want girls' sex. 18.8% of men exposured to violence from family during their life, 24.4% witnessed domestic violence. 94.4% of men accept the domestic violence against women as disturbing and a major public health problem. At the same time, 30% of men who experience violence in the family throughout his life stated that violence may be a solution (p=.019), more than half of the men who witnessed domestic violence throughout the life stated that women who experience violence is not need to share with others in this case (p=.000). Conclusions: In this study, there was no significant relationship between the expression for domestic violence and socio-demographic variables. Although there is low frequency, has been found behavior of violence against women of men, women's education and working life, have negative opinions related to sexual harassment of women. Background: Nursing process is a planned process based on problem solving approach in defining and solving patient problems. Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the nursing diagnoses of patients who have been treated in acute psychiatric clinics in the recent year. Method: Socio-demographic and clinical data of 16.073 in-patients who have been treated in acute psychiatric clinics of a public hospital between November 2016 and November 2017 were analyzed descriptively and retrospectively by using the hospital information management system. The data of the research was collected between 1 and 31 December 2017. Care plans that were made by the nurses were reviewed by the researchers taking into account the functional health models (FHM) and the diagnostic system of North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) and recorded in the data collection form. The data were calculated in percentage by using SPSS (Version 21.0) program. Results: Nurses collected the highest percentage data about health perception and management (80.9%), role and relationship function (41.6%), coping/stress tolerance (28.2%) among the patients who were evaluated in accordance with FHM in the research. It was determined that nurses recorded 41 NANDA nursing diagnoses data belonging to total of 16.073 patients by entering them 1.330.976 times hospital information management systems. It was determined that the nursing diagnoses which were mostly recorded by nurses were the risk of falling (73%), deterioration in social interaction (41.32%), risk of violence against others (16.50%), anxiety (13.06%), risk of transmission of infection (11%), lack of selfcare (5.24%), ineffective individual coping (7.41%) and deterioration in thought processes (6.55%). When nursing diagnoses were examined in terms of standard terminology, it was determined that 41 of the diagnoses did not comply with the standard terminology and were expressed and recorded in different forms. Conclusion: It was observed that the diagnoses identified by nurses according to the FHM were about the psychosocial field which is more easily detectable in relation to the psychiatric field, and that they were not analyzed in the way that provide holistic nursing care by excluding the data regarding the sexuality-reproduction and the values and beliefs. Aim: This study aimed at identifying the constipation levels of older people and their interventions for recovery. Methodology: This descriptive study was conducted between the dates of 04.07.2016–15.01.2017 with 309 patients aged 65 and above, who applied to the internal (internal diseases, cardiology, chest diseases, neurology) clinics in a state hospital. The study data was collected by using an introductory information form, Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) and Rome-III Diagnostic Criteria for Constipation. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistical methods and chi-square test. Results: In this study, the average age was 72.72±7.19, and 57% of participants were female. Of the study participants, 64.7% reported having constipation problems and 18.1% reported having delayed colon excretion. 39.7% of older people drank plenty of water, 29.2% used laxatives, 24.9% tried to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, 22.7% ate dried apricots when they had constipation. We found that older people, whose daily fluid intake was low, experienced constipation more frequently (p<0.008). The study compared the participants’ gastrointestinal system symptoms and constipation cases, and found that older people with constipation experienced problems such as indigestion (p<0.00), bloating (p<0.00), rectal pain (p<0.01), swallowing difficulties (p<0.01), lack of appetite (p<0.01) more than those without constipation. Conclusion: This study found that older people frequently had constipation, and they consumed plenty of fluids and used laxatives to treat it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To compare awareness of and attitudes to research and participation in research activities between nursing students taking a nursing research course and those not taking the course. Methods: A quantitative descriptive-comparative study was conducted in a nursing department of a university in Aegean Region in Turkey between 16 November and 11 December 2015. Totally 860 students were enrolled the study. Of the 380 students took a research course, and 480 did not take course agreed to participate. No sample selection was performed. The participation rate was 60% (n:522). Results: The mean age of the students was 20.72±0.95 years, 86.3% of the students were female (n=451). More than half (63.4%) of the students taking a research course and 34.5% of the nurses not taking it reported that they participated in a scientific meetings. A significantly higher rate of the students taking the course participated in scientific meetings (χ²=43.12, p=.000), involvement in a research activity (χ²= 6.55, p=.001), participated in research as a subject (χ²=5.90, p=.019) and collected data on behalf of a researcher (χ²=5.99, p=.016). The students taking the course got the total mean score 121.49±7.30 for the scale and the mean item score 4.19±0.53. Those not taking the course got the mean total score 120.25±6.6 for the scale and the mean item score 4.14±0.54. The former group of the students received higher scores for awareness of and attitudes to research without a significant difference (U=3.219; p:0.33). Conclusions: Both groups of the students are similar in terms of their awareness of and attitudes to research and advances in nursing. However, a higher rate of the students taking a research course actively contributed to research by joining scientific meetings and research activities and collecting data for another researcher’s study. Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L) is one of the alternative oil crops increasing planted area in Turkey recently, especially in Central Anatolia. Organic farming is also an alternative farming system increasing in Turkey. For this purpose, this study was conducted to determine the yield and quality of safflower with application three organic fertilizers in Konya region. Research was carried out in 2009 at the Selcuk University Sarayönü Vocational School experiment field. Dincer was used as safflower variety and three organic fertilizers (OF1, OF2 and OF3) have been applied, both with diammonium phosphate and without. Yield, thousand kernel weight, protein and oil content of kernel were evaluated in the experiment. Diammonium phosphate application was significantly important (p < 0.01) and organic fertilizers were significantly differ (p < 0.01) from control but there is no difference among them. OF1, OF3 and OF2 with diammonium phosphate application were in the first groups in terms of yield, 2652.8, 2531.3 and 2447.9 kg ha-1 respectively. There was no significantly difference among the organic fertilizer applications in terms of thousand kernel weight. The current status of marine fishes distributed along the Turkish coasts is reviewed and an updated checklist including 512 species is presented. In this study, 5 species are recorded for the first time from Turkey (Lepidion lepidion (Risso, 1810); Bathophilus nigerrimus Giglioli, 1882; Gonostoma denudatum Rafinesque, 1810; Solea aegyptiaca Chabanaud, 1927; and Gobius roulei de Buen, 1928), while 7 species are new to the Turkish Aegean Sea coast (Notacanthus bonaparte Risso, 1840; Nettastoma melanurum Rafinesque, 1810; Apletodon dentatus (Facciolà, 1887); Apletodon incognitus Hofrichter & Patzner, 1997; Callionymus filamentosus Valenciennes, 1837; Cynoglossus sinusarabici (Chabanaud, 1931); Torquigener flavimaculosus Hardy & Randall, 1983) and 3 species are newly reported from the Levantine coast (Dysomma brevirostre (Facciolà, 1887); Apletodon dentatus (Facciolà, 1887); Zebrus zebrus (Risso, 1827)). Micronuclei tests is a system of mutagenicity testing used for determining the pollution and chemicals causing changes in DNA fragments such as micronuclei in the cytoplasm of interphase cells. Damage caused on the DNA by genotoxic pollutants is the first consequence occurring in the aquatic organisms. Thus, it was attempted to determine whether pollution affected the erythrocytes and gills of fish Gobius niger and haemolymph and gills of mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis living in Izmir Bay at the level of DNA by the means of micronuclei (MN) test. Organisms used in the MN test were collected from seven locations (Alsancak, Alaybey Shipyard, Karsiyaka, Bostanli, Göztepe, Konak and Pasaport) which are known as the most polluted part of inner Bay of Izmir (Western Coast of Turkey). According to the results of the present study, frequency of MN was found at high level in Alaybey Shipyard and Pasaport where wastes from existing dockyard contributed to high level of pollution. In conclusion, this study indicates that the micronuclei test gives sensitive results in monitoring the pollution, especially the pollution of harbor, and thus it might be used as standard method in regular monitoring of pollution of coastal ecosystem. The aim of this study was to monitor the heavy metal contents and fecal pollution in Tapes decussatus (carpet shell clam) from Izmir Bay (Eastern Aegean). Bivalve mollusks were sampled on January, March, July, and October 2007 in the Izmir Bay. Izmir Bay is one of the great natural bays of the Mediterranean. Concentrations of heavy metals were determined in the clams from the different seasons. Fecal coliform densities were determined to evaluate the degree of water pollution and clams’ microbiological accumulation of the classical microbial pollution indicators. The concentration of heavy metals in T. decussatus from Izmir Bay were Hg 0.044–0.13; Cd 0.026–0.24; Pb 0.38–1.2; Cr 2.3–3.7; Cu 6.4–8.4; Zn 56.0–81.8, and Ni 8.1–9.6 μg/g (dry weight). The maximum values were generally obtained in July and March except Ni. This study found that the levels of heavy metals except Cr in T. decussatus were below Spanish and European Communities legislations for shellfish as food. Microbial pollution indicators (heterotrophic bacteria and fecal coliform) were measured in T. decussatus. Maximum heterotrophic bacteria and fecal coliforms were recorded in the winter while the lowest were detected in summer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
