The current study pioneers a comprehensive exploration into the influence of ripening stages on the nutritional composition and antioxidant attributes of the New Zealand damson plums (Prunus domestica ssp. Insititia). Sampled at early‐, mid‐, and late‐ripening stages from randomly selected plum trees, the investigation unveiled notable significant (p <.05) declines in multiple parameters as ripening progressed. Noteworthy reductions in dry matter (from 21% to 19.33%), stone weight (from 30.23% to 24.30%), total dietary fiber (from 3.15% to 2.5%), energy content (from 280 to 263 kJ/100 g), vitamin D3 (from 1.67 to 1.53 μg/100 g), vitamin A (from 4.2 to 3.87 μg/100 g), and specific minerals (e.g., Ca, Mg, and P) emerged as a hallmark of this progression. Additionally, plums harvested at the advanced ripening stage exhibited heightened moisture content in contrast to their early‐stage counterparts. Conversely, ash, protein, carbohydrates, total sugar, and minerals (including K, Na, Zn, and Se) demonstrated no significant alteration (p >.05) across ripening stages. Remarkably, damson plums that were harvested at the end of the ripening stage displayed reduced phenolic content and total antioxidant activity compared to those acquired at the early–mid ripening phase. This research collectively highlights the substantive impact of harvesting time and ripening stage on the nutritional and antioxidant profiles of damson plums cultivated in New Zealand. Western mothers use more mental state talk with children than do Chinese mothers (e.g., "think", "like", "happy"). The present study aimed to examine whether Western mothers not only produced a greater amount of mental state talk, but also used a wider range of mental state terms (i.e., greater lexical variety) compared to Chinese mothers. We compared maternal mental state talk in 271 mother-child dyads from New Zealand, Australia and China, and coded both quantity (i.e., frequency) and quality (i.e., type, variety, valence) of mothers' mental state talk to their 2.5- to 5-year-olds. Western mothers produced more talk about cognitions and emotions, as well as modulations of assertions, but a similar amount of desire talk, compared to Chinese mothers, with the same patterns found in the variety of talk. Western mothers produced an overall higher amount of mental state talk and a greater variety of mental state terms, but crucially, still produced more MS talk after controlling for the variety. Neither the amount nor the variety of maternal MS talk was correlated with children's theory of mind. These findings shed light on the diverse ways that mothers construe and describe mental states in different cultures, and highlight the importance of examining different aspects of maternal mental state talk and their impact on children's theory of mind in future longitudinal studies. Background: People with hip osteoarthritis are typically offered a combination of education and exercise to address muscle atrophy and weakness. Limited evidence exists to assess the efficacy of exercise programs on muscle structure or function in this population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of targeted resistance exercise on gluteal muscle hypertrophy and strength in people with mild-to-moderate hip osteoarthritis.Methods: Twenty-seven participants with radiologically confirmed hip osteoarthritis recruited from a single site of a multi-site, double-blind clinical trial were randomly allocated to receive a 12-week targeted gluteal intervention or sham intervention. Magnetic resonance imaging and hand-held dynamometry were used to determine change in gluteal muscle volume, fatty infiltration and hip muscle strength. For gluteal muscle volume and strength outcomes mixed model analyses of variance (ANOVA) were conducted. A general linear model (ANOVA) analysis with fixed effects parameter estimates was used to assess the impact of sex on gluteal muscle size and strength of the affected limb only. For muscle fat index a mixed method ANOVA was used to assess the differences between groups and over time.Results: In the targeted intervention group, gluteus minimus volume increased from baseline to post-intervention in both limbs (pooled mean difference: 0.06 cm3/kg, 95% confidence interval: 0.01 to 0.11) while no change occurred in the sham group (time x group effect: P = 0.025). Gluteus medius, gluteus maximus and tensor fascia lata volume did not change significantly over time. Hip strength (abduction, adduction, flexion, extension, external and internal rotation) improved similarly in both groups (time main effect: P ≤ 0.042). There was a consistent, albeit non-significant, pattern of reduced fatty infiltration after the targeted intervention.Conclusion: Targeted resistance exercise resulted in gluteus minimus hypertrophy, but improvements in hip strength occurred in both groups. Clinicians delivering hip osteoarthritis rehabilitation programs might consider implementing a targeted exercise program to attenuate disease associated changes within gluteal muscles.Trial Registration: Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, ID: ACTRN12617000970347.
