The primary purpose of this paper is to verify the basic assumptions according to the pecking order and Trade-off theory for the capital structure in listed firms on KSA, Iran, and the Iraq Stock Exchange of West Asian countries. The pooled ordinary least squares (OLS) were used to examine the relationships of the three countries for determinants of the capital structure from 2016 to 2020 for the data of non-financial companies. Finally, we obtained 116 Saudi, 82 Iranian, and 35 Iraqi companies. Our findings support capital structure theories of the pecking order theory better to describe the capital structure in KSA. This is a significant marker like these societies, yet we found some determinants of the capital structure consistent with trade-off theory in the context of Iran and Iraq. So, it can be said that the Islamic nature of these countries brings companies closer to issuing shares than using debt as a means of capital financing, as Muslims believe that the usury (Raba) comes from the interest of debt. Our results indicate that the growth opportunities have a positive relationship with LEV, but it is not significant for the three countries. This paper can give a unique picture of Islamic societies and how to get capital financing. Despite the tremendous economic challenges among the three countries, we found a remarkable similarity in the choice of pecking order theory for the capital structure; naturally, this paper is of interest to owners and managers who are trying to obtain an ideal capital structure to improve the fixed performance of the company. This is the first paper that examines the determinants of the capital structure in Islamic West Asian countries. It can be an essential reference for future studies in this field. One of the most important issues along the Iran-Iraq border (Kurdistan) is the Kulbari phenomenon. The phenomena have forced the inhabitants of these border regions, whether old or young, men or women, to some extent be involved. Problems of life and finances of this phenomenon cannot be ignored by any viewer. The present paper is an attempt to study the economic position of Kulbari's in the north-western border villages of Iran more specifically the border villages of Paveh. For the same purpose the library documentary and field study methods have been used. A questionnaire was prepared keeping the statistical population in mind, of which 113 questionnaires were answered. Results thus obtained shows that the most important parameter affecting the political dimension of the Kulbari phenomenon in the border villages is the communication policy between the two border states, the ideology, and strategies of the two border states, and the border policy. In the economic dimension, the most important parameter includes the supply of necessities of life, employment and unemployment in the border region, the absence of agricultural and pasture land; and in the geographical dimension the most important parameters affecting the stability of the Kulbari phenomenon is the development level of the border region relative to the center. High spatial and temporal resolution remote sensing data are becoming readily available. This has made the use of remote sensing to monitor and quantify spatiotemporal changes in surface waters feasible and efficient. In this paper, remote sensing techniques based on spectral indices were used to assess the changes in submerged areas and water storage in the Hawizeh marsh (south of Iraq) during the 2019 flood. Two water indices, the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI), were used for this purpose. Water indices have been frequently utilized to detect water bodies because of their particular spectral properties in the visible and infrared spectrum. Non-measured flood-related flows into the marsh have also been estimated by applying the water balance approach. The accuracy assessment of the water areas extracted by the remote sensing indices showed an acceptable degree of reliability, which reflected positively on the water inflow calculations. As the Hawizeh is a transboundary marsh shared by Iraq and Iran, remote sensing techniques allowed for the estimation of difficult-to-measure inflows from the Iranian side. The results of the water balance revealed that the inflows from the Iranian side to the marsh during the 5 months of the flood made up approximately 41.2% of the total water volume entering the marsh. The study demonstrated the feasibility of using uncomplicated water extraction methods that depend on remote sensing data to monitor hydrological changes in the Hawizeh wetland that lack sufficient data. Saudi-Iran relations have been continuously evolving, with regional and global implications. Though religious differences make up a large part of this relationship, it is not all. Multiethnicity, Arab versus Persian domination, and divergence of interests of regional and extra-regional players are also significant. The two regional heavyweights have driven the neighbouring states towards alliances of varying natures. It has repercussions for Pakistan due to its security, economic concerns, and religious and sectarian fault lines. Opportunely, the current political environment is developing prospects to rebuild relations. After unfinished rapprochement efforts by Pakistan, Iraq has recently made the latest endeavour of arbitration. This paper analyses the effects of Saudi-Iran contention on Pakistan and the scope and implications of the current rapprochement effort. Primarily, the qualitative method has been used, and it has been established that due to the complexities of a relationship, achieving peace is not as easy as it appears. Also, from Pakistan's perspective, escalation levels should ideally remain below the threshold of a dispute necessitating precise positions and above a minimum threshold of complete peace to keep Pakistan's security-related relevance. Theories of civic culture and democratization have tended to ignore stateless nations like the Kurds. This brings up the question of what civic culture looks like for these groups and whether the status of statelessness has in - fluenced the civic culture of Kurds in Iran, Iraq, and Turkey. Analyzing the first merged large-N dataset including Kurds from Turkey, Iran, and Iraq, this paper shows that the last hundred years of Kurdish political movements have strongly influenced the civic culture of Kurds. Being Kurdish in Turkey, Iran, and Iraq has a significant effect on levels of political trust and support as well as the correlation of these indicators with levels of support for a democratic political system. Overall, this paper finds that being Kurdish has a strong positive effect on support for democracy versus autocracy in all three countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper journeys along the theoretical and historical trajectories of the early stage of post-revolutionary Iran, marked by an external war with Iraq and internal political suppression. Specifically, it grapples with the intricacies of loss, mourning, and survival in the meanders of the life of a woman, a former leftist political prisoner, named Mahtab. Striving to unravel the pathos and aporias of Mahtab's life, this paper ponders the limits of the laws of polity and of kinship, and the "limit of reflexivity" (a phrase introduced by Judith Butler) that may have led to her suicide. Based on Mahtab's story and my ethnographic work with some of the surviving former women inmates, this paper engages with Sigmund Freud's notions of survival, mourning, and melancholia in light of their intertwined relationship to the reformation of the subject. I argue for the centrality of mourning and its limits and illustrate how historically shaped political ideals and gendered subjectivities are implicated and influential in determining the impossibility of survival. Background: One of the most important issues in public policy and welfare state is health care. Poor management leads to the waste of resources, including money, human resources, facilities, and equipment. Aims: This paper seeks to answer the question of which eastern Mediterranean countries are more effective in allocating their health resources, and does Iran, in relation to those countries, have an effective health system. Methods: This study examined technical efficiency among eastern Mediterranean countries in 2018. Data were extracted from Global Health Observatory data World Health Organization. We applied input-oriented Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models to estimate efficiency scores. Inputs are Physicians density per 10,000 populations, Total hospital beds per 10,000 populations, Current expenditure on health, % of gross domestic product and outputs are infant survival rate and Life expectancy. Results: The most efficient health systems in the eastern Mediterranean were Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates. The inefficient countries are Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Palestine and Saudi Arabia. Conclusions: Among the efficient countries, one category of high-entry countries such as Bahrain and Qatar with high input especially in health expenditure had higher output. The second group of countries with lower inputs such as Iran and Morocco has been able to produce similar output with other countries. Also, inefficiency in countries such as Saudi Arabia can be attributed to this with higher input such as health expenditure has lower output such life expectancy and infant survival rate. Stachys kurdica, well adapted to live in sloping limestone crevices and steep screes, is distributed across particular routes in Southeast Turkey and North Iraq and also extends to Iran. This species belongs to the section Fragilicaulis and contains the following infraspecific taxa; var. kurdica and var. brevidens. These taxa share partly the same habitats and are distinguished by the calyx characters. Micromorphological studies of trichomes on the epidermal surface and nutlet surface by Tabletop Scanning Electron Microscopy and Light Microscopy have revealed non-glandular and glandular trichomes on the taxa. The nutlets were coloured from light to dark-brown, usually obovate, ventral sides flat, rooflike with rib, apex rounded, faintly granulate, wrinkly, glabrous and reticulate. Karyotypes of the taxa have been introduced for the first time to the scientific community and were obtained by the Image Analysis System. The karyotype analysis showed the taxa as diploid, with chromosome numbers of 2n = 34. In addition to these morphological characters, chromosomal and micromorphological differences further serve to distinguish the taxa. Reflective practice in TESOL is widely used in pre-service and in-service teacher education contexts and is regarded as beneficial for ongoing professional learning. While models of reflective language teaching vary, they all aim to improve classroom outcomes for teachers and students. A holistic approach to reflective practice includes teachers' beliefs, philosophies and the interaction of their teaching practices with moral and social issues outside the classroom as part of the self-reflective teaching process (Farrell, 2015; Larrivee, 2000). Reflecting on the teaching journey in this way can help teachers make sense of how individual beliefs about teaching interact with professional experiences, and how these interactions inform decisions in the classroom. The aim of this narrative paper is to describe the developmental process I went through during my first year as a teacher of beginner, refugee-background students in an adult migrant English language teaching program in Australia. Self-reflective data primarily sourced from teaching journals kept during my first year of teaching were analysed using Farrell's (2015) Framework for Reflecting on Practice. Following a brief introduction of the framework, its application to this current study is discussed. Findings highlight the important roles philosophy, theory, critical reflection and mentors played in my pedagogical decision-making and overall learning processes. The paper concludes with a discussion about implications for ESOL teachers, graduate students and educators in TESOL teacher education programs.

• The M w = 7.3 earthquake near the Iran-Iraq border in west Iran occurred in 12.11.2017. • Median, Kalman filter and NN were implemented to investigate TEC measurements. • Swarm data analysis identifies anomalies 8–11 days prior to the earthquake. • Climatological data analysis identifies anomalies that precede ionospheric anomalies. • The sequence of different anomalies confirms a bottom-up LAIC process. The M w = 7.3 earthquake near the Iran-Iraq border in west Iran (34.911°N, 45.959°E) occurred at 18:18:17 UTC (LT = UTC + 03:30), November 12, 2017 as the result of oblique-thrust faulting at mid-crustal depth (∼19 km). Median, Kalman filter and Neural Network, as three standard, classical and intelligent methods, have been implemented to investigate three months of GPS Total Electron Content (TEC) measurements and to detect the striking anomalous variations around the time and location of the mentioned earthquake. The first method detects unusual variations, 9 days before the event, between 21:00 and 22:00 UTC. The other two methods of Kalman filter and Neural Network detect another clear anomaly on 11 days preceding the earthquake at 16:00 UTC. These findings are two of the outstanding results of GPS-TEC precursor analysis. This paper also presents the results of Swarm satellites (Alpha, Bravo and Charlie) data analysis inside the Dobrovolsky area around the Iran earthquake epicenter during the period from 1 August to 30 November 2017. The time series and orbital analysis of six measured parameters including electron density, electron temperature, magnetic scalar and vectors (X, Y, Z) components indicate irregular variations between 8 and 11 days prior to the occurrence of the earthquake. Since the variations of the solar and geomagnetic indices follow a normal behaviour during the whole period of the observed ionospheric anomalies between 8 and 11 days before the earthquake, it can be concluded that multi-precursors analysis has an important role to acknowledge the seismo-LAI (Lithospheric-Atmospheric-Ionospheric) anomalies associated to strong earthquakes such as this case. Furthermore, some physical and chemical atmospheric parameters from a climatological database are investigated and some interesting anomalies above two standard deviations prior to the earthquake are found. This paper shows not only anomalies in atmosphere and ionosphere but also a contemporary analysis of different data sources to detect the possible Lithosphere Atmosphere Ionosphere Coupling (LAIC) effects. For centuries, the tradition of veiling and public silence repressed the Iranian women both physically and verbally. These conventions stipulated that women's physique should be concealed and their voice, emotion and concern remain unexpressed. Although Iranian women have always played crucial and representative roles in various political and historical eras, the tendency to trivialize and neglect their roles and movements has been rife. This affected Persian literature as well; women were either totally excluded or were marginalized and mentioned very briefly in literature. The Iranian women had challenged these conventions, ventured into the public, and voiced their thoughts and concerns through literature but they were again marginalized and their literature was overlooked due to possessing traditional masculine styles of writing. This sentiment gradually disappeared with the emergence of women authors whose literary works had a different style than men's writings. These writings brought women from the periphery to the center as well. Since then, Iranian women authors have been producing literature to protest against patriarchy and traditional discriminatory policies. They have also been active writers in what now can be regarded as the formerly male-dominated genres that deal with nationalism such as war literature. 'One Woman's War: Da' (2014) is one such work. Drawing upon and reviving Cixous' notion of ecriture feminine, this paper explores how Da, a state-sponsored war memoir, constructs feminine writing that challenges patrilineal culture and highlights women's roles in nation-building projects like the Iran-Iraq war. Selecting appropriate climate change scenarios is crucial, as it influences the outcomes of climate change impact studies. Several storylines could be used to investigate the sensitivity of water resource schemes to weather variability and improve policymakers' adaptation strategies. This study proposes a comprehensive and generic methodology for assessing the future climate change impact on semi-arid and arid zones at the basin scale by comparing delta perturbation scenarios to the outcomes of seven collections of GCMs (general circulation models). The findings indicate that the two scenarios predicted nearly identical declines in average reservoir discharges over a monthly timescale. Consequently, their maximum values are almost similar. The projected decrease in the streamflow for the period 2080–2099 is approximately 48%—the same as the ratio from the delta perturbation scenario of Future16 (a 30% precipitation decrease and a 30% potential evapotranspiration increase). Furthermore, delta perturbation scenarios allow the impacts of model sensitivity to climate change to be clearly identified in relation to GCM scenarios. Delta perturbation scenarios allow for an extensive collection of possible climate changes at the regional scale. In addition, delta perturbation scenarios are simpler to create and use; therefore, they might complement GCM scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Mentha longifolia L. is a perennial plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family that has a wide distribution in the world. M. longifolia has many applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries due to its terpenoid and phenolic compounds. The phytochemical profile and biological activity of plants are affected by their genetics and habitat conditions. In the present study, the content, constituents and antifungal activity of the essential oil extracted from 20 accessions of M. longifolia collected from different regions of Iran and Iraq countries were evaluated. Results: The essential oil content of the accessions varied between 1.54 ± 0.09% (in the Divandarreh accession) to 5.49 ± 0.12% (in the Khabat accession). Twenty-seven compounds were identified in the essential oils of the studied accessions, which accounted for 85.5-99.61% of the essential oil. The type and amount of dominant compounds in the essential oil were different depending on the accession. Cluster analysis of accessions based on essential oil compounds grouped them into three clusters. The first cluster included Baziyan, Boukan, Sarouchavah, Taghtagh, Darbandikhan, Isiveh and Harir. The second cluster included Khabat, Kounamasi, Soni and Mahabad, and other accessions were included in the third cluster. Significant correlations were observed between the essential oil content and components with the climatic and soil conditions of the habitats. The M. longifolia essential oil indicated antifungal activity against Fusarium solani in both methods used. In all studied accessions, the fumigation method compared to the contact method was more able to control mycelia growth. In both methods, the inhibition percentage of essential oil on mycelia growth increased with an increase in essential oil concentration. Significant correlations were found between the essential oil components and the inhibition percentage of mycelium growth. Conclusion: The studied M. longifolia accessions showed significant differences in terms of the essential oil content and components. Differences in phytochemical profile of accessions can be due to their genetic or habitat conditions. The distance of the accessions in the cluster was not in accordance with their geographical distance, which indicates the more important role of genetic factors compared to habitat conditions in separating accessions. The antifungal activity of essential oils was strongly influenced by the essential oil quality and concentration, as well as the application method. Determining and introducing the elite accession in this study can be different depending on the breeder's aims, such as essential oil content, desired chemical composition, or antifungal activity. Background and objectives: Every day, either by accident or illness, there are numerous situations in which the safety of individuals, families or communities is endangered. >2000 children worldwide die every day as a result of unintentional injuries. The majority of risks influencing a cardiac arrest in a school are related to physical activity, such as participating in sports or having an airway obstruction or trauma event. In the United States and Europe, one million people experience cardiac arrests annually. The aim of this study was to assess the basic school teachers' practices regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation at basic schools in Erbil City. Methods: A cross suctional study was carried out. To assess the practices of basic school teachers regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The study was conducted from January 20,2021 to May 15, 2022. This study was conducted in basic schools in Erbil city according to six municipalities. The sample size was 470 teachers. The observational check list technique was used to assess cardiopulmonary resuscitation performance. Results: The majority of them were female (74%), more than half of them have a diploma (52.3%), the majority of age group were between 37-48 years old which represents 51%, the mean age was (43.85±8.27), most of the teachers were married (86.4%), the majority of them did not a training course (86.4%). Several teachers use tradition at media (9.6%) and social media (44.7). A lot of barriers were faced teachers to prevent participation in training courses were not found in professional training course The majority of the schoolteachers had poor levels of practice (51.1%) regarding the performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Conclusion: The majority of schoolteachers had poor levels of practice regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation. There was a significant association between the performance of CPR and some socio-demographic variables like age group, gender, years of experience, and desire to attend CPR training course. This study explores the long-standing conflict over Kurdish self-determination as it played out in three cases of negotiations conducted between the governments of Iraq, Iran, and Turkey, and the representatives of Kurdish movements from the 1970s onwards. Drawing on conflict and negotiations studies, the paper seeks to explain (a) why efforts at negotiating the conflict in question have not been successful and (b) what reasons account for this failure. To this end, the study first conceptualizes the Kurdish question as a constitutive conflict of self-determination grounded in a dynamic contest between direct rule and self-rule. Second, it systematically links the failure of negotiations to the absence of substantive commitments by the states involved, the lack of collective action on the part of the Kurdish actors, and negative third-party involvement. Political leaders' discourse plays a significant role in directing the public opinion during crises. Hence, this study analyzed 71 speeches delivered by Hassan Rouhani, President of Iran (2013-2021), during the first and the second waves of COVID-19 pandemic (February 20 till August 30, 2020) as the most critical period of the pandemic attack. This study drew upon Lakoff & Johnson's (1980) Conceptual Metaphor Theory as its theoretical background, and the analysis of the speeches was comprised of metaphor identification using the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) and metaphor interpretation. The findings of the study reveal employment of metaphorical representations of coronavirus as a discursive strategy to deal with the situation. The main metaphorical representation of coronavirus was framing public cooperation and national solidarity during the COVID-19 pandemic as participating in a war. As argued in this paper, the employed metaphors not only remained loyal to general war features, but they also entailed a specific sociocultural image of war for the Iranian people based on their experience and memories of the eight-year Iran-Iraq war. Finally, this study recommends for future studies to include the specific sociocultural context and historical background of the addressed audience. This provides further insight into what metaphors specifically mean to the addressed audience, which is beyond general metaphor use. This study is hoped to be a small step towards bringing into spotlight the significance of sociocultural aspects and historical background as necessary information to provide in-depth insights into what makes metaphors effective communicative tools to specific audience. Background and Objectives: Trichomonas tenax is a protozoan which participates in the human oral microflora. It is considered as a potential paradontopathogen. This microorganism is also reported in the respiratory tract. We aimed to analyze the available literature about the prevalence of Trichomonas tenax in the population affected by periodontal disease. Materials and Methods: Searching the Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases with the keywords: "Trichomonas tenax" and "periodontal diseases" was able to identify several systematic reviews and original articles up until July 2023. All studies with patients suffering from periodontal disease, which mentioned the year of publication, the country, specified the detection methods, and included the total number of tested samples as well as the percentage of those infected with Trichomonas tenax were included. Irrelevant articles were excluded. Results: We found 137 studies, but only 64 studies about the distribution of Trichomonas tenax in patients with gum disease underwent qualitative analysis. The highest number of studies have been conducted in Iran, Poland and Iraq. Different methods have been used to detect the unicellular organism, each with a different specificity and sensitivity. Conclusions: Interest in Trichomonas tenax has grown considerably since 2000. Because of its association with periodontal disease, Trichomonas tenax's role in the inflammatory process should not be overlooked. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sumac (Rhus coriaria L.) is one of the medicinal plants of Anacardiaceae family and widely used as a spice in Iran and Arab countries. Rhus coriaria var. zebaria is a small tree or large shrub, wildly growing in Iraq and described as a new variety with special characteristics. These increase the importance of studying sumac in these areas. Here, the phytochemical variations and the antibacterial activity of 50 accessions of this variety from five different climatic conditions was evaluated in order to identify the best accession to use and the best area for its cultivation. This is the most comprehensive study on this plant. Essential oil compounds were identified using GC–MS method and according to the results, Z, E-2,13-octadecadien, caryophyllene oxide, 2,4-decadienal, E-caryophyllene and nonanoic acid were among the main compounds. Also, the variety is a rich source of minerals including K, Ca, Mg, Na, P, and N. Sumac fruit extract from Akre Xerds had the highest anthocyanin and the lowest amount was from Kavilca region. The radical scavenging effect of extract from Dostic area in the concentration of 400 µg/mL is closer to the effect of ascorbic acid. The largest inhibition was found in the sumac extracted oil of Xasto Zhere area against S. aureus in compared with penicillin and amoxicillin and enrofloxacin antibiotics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using flashbacks, Bizhan Najdi's "A Plant in Quarantine" tells the story of the central character called Taher, an Iranian boy, who has been quarantined in a hospital due to abnormal spread of skin rashes after a military service physician took off a lock from the back of his right shoulder. Immediately, Taher came down with a contagious skin disease called hereditary fear by the rural doctor. This short story brings the past and present together in a peculiar manner, providing an overview of present condition actuated by past events revolving around the Tudeh Party, an Iranian Marxist political party, and the Iran-Iraq War. The analysis of this relationship and the possibility of Taher's hereditary fear is the main focus of the paper, which can account for the role of history in this short story. For such an end, the analysis is carried out at the two levels of writer and story. The writer's disturbed memories, which are related to fear and violence in Iran's contemporary history, and the conditions of their emergence are explored so that the roots of the protagonist's inherent fear might be discernible. The findings of the paper show that the unpleasant presence of the main character's ancestral past is the cause of his predicament, introducing past as an active agent of the present.

This paper examines the recent history of the discourses on wars and conflicts in Iraq and the macro discourses of the representation of Iraq through key historical events in the US press. The aim of the research is to examine both continuity and changes in this representation on the basis of the changes taking place on the international political scene in general and with regard to the involvement of the US in particular. This study examines the discourses of US newspapers during the Iraq-Iran war (1980-1988) and the 2003 USled invasion of Iraq to see how the themes: Saddam, Iraqi people, Halabja are discursively represented in these two wars and whether there is a shift of the US stance toward the themes' coverage. An interdisciplinary framework that combined corpus linguistics with the Discourse Historical Approach (DHA) to CDA is employed in the research. The results of the research shed light on how the treatment of the same events and social actors in the US press were different in the different wars: for instance, during the US-led invasion, the Iraqi people (Kurds, Shiites) appeared as worthy victims, a portrayal that fitted in with the propaganda that the war had a humanitarian motive. However, they were never represented in this way during the Iraq-Iran war. Similarly, although Saddam was portrayed negatively in the Iraq-Iran war, he was much more sharply vilified, and demonized during the US-led invasion in relation to crimes that had been committed during the Iraq-Iran war with which he was not connected. Recently, Turanecio Hamzaoğlu was described as a new genus for the scientific world. Turanecio has been distributed as far as Asia, Iran, Caucasus, and Iraq. A phylogenetic analysis based on nrDNA and cpDNA gene regions was performed to determine the position of the genus within the subtribe Adenostylinae. Results from Bayesian and parsimony analyses of the nuclear and chloroplast DNA regions of the subtribe Senecioninae concordantly indicated that it is monophyletic and belongs to the Quadridentate group, with 4-lobed disc flowers. Nuclear DNA data revealed that some of the researched taxa should be transferred to Turanecio and some taxonomical classifications should be conducted for them. Therefore, Iranecio massagetovii and Dolichorrhiza caucasica were transferred to Turanecio and a new combination nova was suggested for them. The Bulfat Igneous Complex comprises the Bulfat and Walash groups and is situated in the Zagros Suture Zone, in the junction of Arabian and Eurasian plates. Zircon U-Pb data indicat an age of 63.7 ± 1.5 Ma for the trondhjemite rocks within the Bulfat group. Walash group is primarily composed of basalt to andesite rocks, interbedded with sedimentary rocks. Zircon U-Pb dating yields an age of 69.7 ± 2.7 Ma for the Walash group. Whole rocks chemistry shows that the Bulfat rocks have affinity to MORB and calc alkaline series but Walsh are mainly plot in the calc alkaline field. Whole rocks Sr-Nd isotope ratios show that the 143Nd/144Nd (i) changes from 0.51243 to 0.52189 and 87Sr/86Sr(i) ratios vary from 0.70345 to 0.7086. The calculated εNd(t) values, based on the CHUR, yield predominantly high positive values ranging from +6 to +8 for most samples. However, a few samples exhibit lower values (+2 to +3). Our data suggest that the interaction between lithospheric (depleted mantle, MORB-Like) and asthenospheric mantle (OIB-like) melts significantly controlled the magmatic evolution of the Bulfat group. The strong positive εNd(t) values (ranging from +6 to +8) align more consistently with a highly depleted lithospheric mantle source for the Walsh group. Therefore, the gradual transition from an arc signature at 70 Ma to a MORB signature around 63 Ma, occurred over a relatively short period of about 10 million years, and indicates the presence of an arc and back-arc system in the Neotethys ocean before the collision of the Arabian and Iran plates during the Cenozoic. In this study, a total of 120 fish specimens of common carp (Cyprinus carpio), were caught at four different stations in Shatt Al-Arab (Hareer, Garmat Ali, Al-Maqal and Abual-Khasib). The histological changes in the gills of fish were detected microscopically. Results show that the Shatt Al-Arab is polluted by some different sources of pollutants including power stations, paper industry, oil refineries, petrochemical industry, chemical fertilizer companies and the sewage system and overfishing and the application of pesticides. As a result of these analyses, histopathological changes in the gills of fish specimens, such as hyperplasia, loss of regular shape of secondary lamellae, separation of lamellar epithelium, clavate structure, atrophy of secondary gills lamellae, necrosis, dilation of lamellar capillaries, loss of secondary lamellae, fusion of secondary lamellae, edema, proliferation of cartilage in primary lamellae and curving of primary lamellae, were observed. This paper hypothesizes that analyzing the geo-economic and energy security characteristics of gas supplies to Europe may help in understanding the features of regional and international relations with regard to selected countries. The paper highlights the significance of natural gas in the New Energy Order, and points to the importance of supply security for the EU. It looks at Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and Algeria as suppliers and Turkey as a transit country in an emerging gas corridor to Europe. It examines supply-side opportunities, which promote new fields of international cooperation based on gas trade, and addresses certain restraints that may reduce the likelihood of further regional cooperation. Economic and geographic factors create new opportunities for regional trade and international relations. One of the difficult tasks of linguistic geography is the clear delimitation of dialectal borders in a multi-dialectal and multi-lingual environment. Western Iran is exactly such a region, hosting a number of Iranian and non-Iranian dialects: Kurdish, Avromani, Gurani, Laki, Kalhori, Luri, Azari Turkish, etc. The demographic situation is rather complicated here as well: along with the localities that are inhabited by a single ethnic group, there are many townships and rural settlements having mixed populations of different ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. In addition, the indiscriminate use of the ethnonym Kurd, applied as a common label to almost all Iranian-speakers of the area, except for, of course, Persians. This paper tries to identify the area populated by the Avromans in the abovementioned region, with possibly accurate statistical data on the number of inhabitants, obtained through the author's personal efforts during several fieldwork periods. Masjed-i-Soleiman (MIS) is situated in the northern part of the Dezful embayment, which is in the Zagros fold-thrust belt with high seismic activities. MIS faces a shallow buried anticline, formed by the shallowest oilfield with a thick gas cap. The cap rocks of this oilfield are highly fractured, which has resulted in leakages from the gas cap. In this paper, we have used remote sensing techniques and image interpretation for the identification of the Niayesh, Lahbari, Andika and MIS fault zones in the studied area. Further, the study exploited seismic potential mapping using the remote sensing techniques. The relationships between the structural controls and localized gas leakage are assessed within the GIS environment. Additionally, field observation data corroborated that the leakages (and seepages) are smashed within the intersection of Niayesh and MIS fault zone, which belongs to the high fractured hinge zone of the MIS anticline. As a result, the reactivation of these active faults may cause large earthquakes with a maximum magnitude of between 6.23 < Ms < 7.05 (Richter scale) and maximum horizontal acceleration 0.26 < a < 0.55 g. Finally, the authors concluded that this anticipated earthquake may cause large scale fracturing of cap rocks, releasing a large volume of H2S gas from the uppermost layer of the reservoir. This paper discusses the discourse of female jihad in contemporary Karbala narratives of Shi'i Islam, specifically Twelver Shi'is. It argues that a gender-dynamic transformation has emerged with regard to the transmission of the Karbala narrative, as well as a renewed attention to the role of women in the aftermath of this battle. Today, the retelling of the story of Karbala involves positioning the role of women within a discourse that can only be described as a 'Jihad of Words' that the female descendants of the Prophet, such as Zaynab, undertook. Moreover, the paper highlights the fact that the gender-infused themes within the Karbala narratives have been influenced by contemporary socio-political events in certain countries such as Lebanon and Iran. Chemical warfare agents are the most brutal weapons among the weapons of mass destruction. Sulfur mustard (SM) is a potent toxic alkylating agent known as "the King of the Battle Gases". SM has been the most widely used chemical weapon during the wars. It was widely used in World War I. Thereafter, it was extensively employed by the Iraqi troops against the Iranian military personnel and even civilians in the border cities of Iran and Iraq in the period between 1983 and 1988. Long-term incapacitating properties, significant environmental persistence, lack of an effective antidote, and relative ease of manufacturing have kept SM a potential agent for both terrorist and military uses. Even 3 decades after SM exposure, numerous delayed complications among Iranian victims are still being reported by researchers. The most common delayed complications have been observed in the respiratory tracts of chemically injured Iranian war veterans. Also, skin lesions and eye disorders have been observed in most Iranian SM-exposed war veterans in the delayed phase of SM intoxication. Thus, extensive research has been conducted on Iranian war veterans during the past decades. Nevertheless, major gaps still continue to exist in the SM literature. Part I of this paper will discuss the delayed complications and manifestations of exposure to SM among Iranian victims of the Iran-Iraq conflict. The North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic dialects, historically spoken by Christian and Jewish minorities in the vast territory that includes southeastern Turkey, northern Iraq and northwestern Iran, belong to a region of linguistic convergence which includes varieties of Arabic, Kurdish and Turkish, spoken by the Muslim majority of the population, and in which prestigious literary--then national--Islamic languages (Arabic, Persian, Turkish) have exerted considerable influence. The results of these contacts have received much attention from scholars, and in some cases Islamic features have been isolated in the lexicon of Modern Aramaic varieties. An apparently paradoxical integration of terms with strong Islamic connotations into the religious language of Christians and Jews has also been observed. From a cultural and literary point of view, the minorities share with the Islamic majority much of the material culture, folklore, literary genres and, in some cases, stories and motifs, the ultimate origin of which may also have been Christian or Jewish. The synergic use of satellite data at moderate spatial resolution (i.e., 20–30 m) from the new Collection 2 (C2) Landsat-8/9 (L8/9) Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Sentinel-2 (S2) Multispectral Instrument (MSI) provides a new perspective in the remote sensing applications for gas flaring (GF) identification and monitoring, thanks to a significant improvement in the revisiting time (up to ~3 days). In this study, the daytime approach for gas flaring investigation (DAFI), recently developed for identifying, mapping and monitoring GF sites on a global scale using the L8 infrared radiances, has been ported on a virtual constellation (VC) (formed by C2 L8/9 + S2) to assess its capability in understanding the GF characteristics in the space-time domain. The findings achieved for the regions of Iraq and Iran, ranked at the second and third level among the top 10 gas flaring countries in 2022, demonstrate the reliability of the developed system, with improved levels of accuracy and sensitivity (+52%). As an outcome of this study, a more realistic picture of GF sites and their behavior is achieved. A new step aimed at quantifying the GFs radiative power (RP) has been added in the original DAFI configuration. The preliminary analysis of the daily OLI- and MSI-based RP, provided for all the sites by means of a modified RP formulation, revealed their good matching. An agreement of 90% and 70% between the annual RPs computed in Iraq and Iran and both their gas-flared volumes and carbon dioxide emissions were also recorded. Being that gas flaring is one of the main sources of greenhouse gases (GHG) worldwide, the RP products may concur to infer globally the GHGs GF emissions at finer spatial scales. This study aimed to examine the impact of enterprise risk management (ERM) on the firm performance of capital markets in developing nations such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq. In order to achieve the study's primary purpose, the economic environments of Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, three neighboring and developing nations, were examined from 2012 to 2019. The hypotheses were tested using panel regression analysis. According to the data, ERM might boost the return on assets and lower the total assets of Iranian enterprises while raising the total assets of Iraqi firms. In addition, the data demonstrated that ERM decreased sales growth and boosted net profit margins in Saudi Arabian companies. ERM enhanced the return on assets in Iranian enterprises and sales growth in Saudi Arabian firms while lowering sales growth in Iraqi firms. In addition, it was shown that total asset turnover increased in non-fraudulent Iranian companies but fell in their Iraqi counterparts. The outcomes of this study revealed substantial evidence regarding the financial conditions and performance of companies operating in emerging nations. As a result, it can be inferred that ERM efficiency and firm performance can be influenced by the firm's nature and structure, as the findings in these three economic environments were fundamentally distinct. This research contributed to the literature on ERM as one of the essential elements influencing business performance in emerging economies with varying capital market laws. The present study investigates the effect of business ethics on happiness, aggression and inconsistency of effort and reward of auditors in Iran and Iraq. The statistical population of the present study includes all partners, managers and auditors working in audit institutions in Iran and partners of the audit institutions, assistant auditors, auditors, individual second rank and individual first rank, with a total of 365 questionnaires completed by Iranian respondents out of 450 questionnaires and 250 questionnaires completed by Iraqi respondents out of 350 questionnaires, a total of 615 questionnaires from the two countries in 2022. Also, the methods of variance analysis and ordinary least squares regression and Smart PLS 3 and Stata 15 software were used to analyze the data and test the hypotheses. The results from testing this research's hypotheses indicate a negative and significant relationship between business ethics and aggression, effort-reward mismatch and a positive and significant relationship between business ethics and happiness. Since the current research was conducted in the emerging financial markets of Iran and Iraq, which are highly competitive, along with having special economic conditions, and since the occupation of the ISIS terrorist group, the civil wars in Iraq, severe world economic sanctions against Iran and the global crisis of Covid-19 in Iran and Iraq have led to special conditions, the current research can bring helpful information to readers and help the development of science and knowledge in this field. On 12 November 2017, an earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.3 struck the west of Iran near the Iraq border. This event was followed about 9 and 12 months later by two large aftershocks of magnitude 5.9 and 6.3, which together triggered intensive seismic activity known as the 2017–2019 Kermanshah sequence. In this study, we analyse this sequence regarding the potential to forecast the spatial aftershock distribution based on information about the main shock and its largest aftershocks. Recent studies showed that classical Coulomb failure stress (CFS) maps are outperformed by alternative scalar stress quantities, as well as a distance-slip probabilistic model (R) and deep neural networks (DNN). In particular, the R-model performed best. However, these test results were based on the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) metric, which is not well suited for imbalanced data sets such as aftershock distributions. Furthermore, the previous analyses also ignored the potential impact of large secondary earthquakes. For the complex Kermanshah sequence, we applied the same forecast models but used the more appropriate MCC-F1 metric for testing. Similar to previous studies, we also observe that the receiver independent stress scalars yield better forecasts than the classical CFS values relying on the specification of receiver mechanisms. However, detailed analysis based on the MCC-F1 metric revealed that the performance depends on the grid size, magnitude cut-off and test period. Increasing the magnitude cut-off and decreasing the grid size and period reduce the performance of all methods. Finally, we found that the performance of the best methods improves when the source information of large aftershocks is additionally considered, with stress-based models outperforming the R model. Background: Respiratory diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the survivors exposed to Sulfur Mustard (SM). The late abnormalities can be present as chronic bronchitis, tracheobronchial stenosis, asthma, bronchiectasis, airway narrowing, lung fibrosis, and lung cancers. This study aims to investigate the association between radiological findings and lung cancer development in patients exposed to sulfur mustard gas. Methods: We entered 719 victims exposed to SM during the Iran–Iraq war into our follow-up study in a consensus manner. They were periodically followed with Chest HRCT scans from 2001 to an interval of 2014–2019. The mean year interval between exposure and the last follow-up was 38 years. For confirming the lung cancer in those with evidence of malignancy in their imaging, fine needle aspiration/biopsy and/or surgical intervention were done. Results: Among 719 patients, 57% were free from any pathologic findings in their HRCT scan. Among the subjects who had the abnormal radiologic findings, Air Trapping (AT), Lung Fibrosis (LF), Bronchiectasis (B), and the evidence of lung cancer were found in 265 (36.9%), 207 (28.8%), 151 (21.0%), and 42 (5.8%), respectively. Adenocarcinoma (38.1%) was the most common type of cancer. The right lung was involved more than the left one regarding LF, B, and cancer (p value < 0.05). Considering the laterality, a significant correlation was found between the side of LF and B and the tumor side. Furthermore, it was shown that the lung lobes with LF were statistically correlated to tumor-involved lobes. The relative risk of AT and B existence for tumor development was 11.73 [4.87–28.26] and 10.14 [5.12–20.090], respectively. The most predictive finding was LF which caused the risk of developing tumor 17.75 [7.35–42.86] times higher in the patient with this pathology. By each increment of the number of LF and B, the risk of developing tumors increased by 51% and 76%, respectively. Conclusion: In survivors exposed to Sulfur Mustard, those with bronchiectasis and lung fibrosis have a significantly higher risk of developing lung cancers, so a close follow-up of these victims is recommended. Context: The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is classified into seven genotypes and more than 100 subtypes. The treatment regimen, duration and efficacy of HCV therapy may vary according to the HCV genotype. Therefore, the HCV genotype should be determined prior to antiviral therapy. The objective of the current study was to review systematically all studies reporting the distribution of HCV genotypes in the countries that make up the Middle East. Evidence Acquisition: Articles were identified by searching electronic databases, including Scopus, PubMed and Google scholar, with timeline limits (articles published between 1995 and 2016). We carried out a systematic search regarding the distribution of HCV genotypes in Middle Eastern countries. Results: A total of 579 studies were identified by the electronic search. Of these, a total of 187 were identified as eligible papers including 60,319 patients who were meta-analyzed for pooled distribution of HCV genotypes. In Turkey, Israel, Cyprus, and Iran, genotype 1 was the most prevalent HCV genotype with rates of 82% (95% CI, 82%-83%), 68% (95% CI, 67%-69%), 68% (95% CI, 59%-77%), and 55% (95% CI, 54%-55%), respectively. In Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Syria, HCV genotype 4 was the most common genotype with rates of 86% (95% CI, 85%-88%), 60% (95% CI, 56%-64%), 56% (95% CI, 54%-55%), and 57% (95% CI, 54%-61%), respectively. On the basis of adjusted data, HCV genotype 4 was the most prevalent genotype in the Middle East region, with a rate of 74.7% (95% CI, 73.4%-76%), followed by genotype 1 at 15.1% (95% CI, 14.1%-16%). Conclusions: Our results showed that HCV genotype 4 is the most prevalent genotype in the Middle East region. The Urban Heat Island (UHI) has a detrimental impact on human thermal comfort and the health of city dwellers through raising average temperatures. Urban geometry is one of the factors that affect the intensity of the UHI phenomena. The purpose of this research is to evaluate and compare traditional vs. modern urban forms with respect to temperature and thermal comfort in the United Arab Emirates. Three of each were chosen based on their densities and form. Traditional buildings in the UAE differ from others in the Middle East in that they are primarily single-story, while in the surrounding countries of the region, such as Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, they are mainly two stories. The UAE climate also has its distinct characteristics. Each configuration was investigated using the ENVI-met urban microclimate simulation software. The comparisons were made for three seasons: summer, winter, and spring. Each configuration was evaluated through four parameters: building shape, street geometry, orientation, and urban density. The results revealed that the low-density traditional urban form exhibited the lowest air temperature in August because it has a low sky view factor (SVF), high height-to-width ratio, and less density. The highest ambient temperature was observed in the sites with low-medium density, lowest height/width ratio, and maximum SVF. The high-density modern urban form displayed lower air temperatures in the summer season than the low and low-medium-density modern urban sites due to the building form, high height-to-width ratio, low SVF, and wind corridors. The traditional compact urban form in Al Fahidi, which has the highest urban density of the six configurations, achieved the best thermal comfort levels in the summer due to the sizable height-to-width ratio and lowest SVF. Despite its high-seismogenic potential, the details of the seismogenic processes of Zagros Simply Folded Belt (SFB) remains debated. Three large earthquakes (M w 7.3, 5.9 and 6.3) struck in the Lurestan arc of the Zagros SFB in 2017 and 2018. The sequence was recorded by seismic stations at regional, and teleseismic distances. Coseismic surface displacements, measured by Sentinel-1A/B satellites, provide additional data and a unique opportunity to study these earthquakes in detail. Here, we complement previous studies of the coseismic slip distribution of the 12 November 2017 M w 7.3 Ezgeleh earthquake by a detailed analysis of its aftershocks, and we analysed the rupture process of the two interrelated earthquakes (25 August 2018 M w 5.9 Tazehabad and the 25 November 2018 M w 6.3 Sarpol-e Zahab earthquakes). We model the surface displacements obtained from Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) measurements and seismic records. We conduct non-linear probabilistic optimizations based on joint InSAR and seismic data to obtain finite-fault rupture of these earthquakes. The Lurestan arc earthquakes were followed by a sustained aftershock activity, with 133 aftershocks exceeding M n 4.0 until 30 December 2019. We rely on the permanent seismic networks of Iran and Iraq to relocate ∼700 M n 3 + events and estimate moment tensor solutions for 85 aftershocks down to M w 4.0. The 2017 Ezgeleh earthquake has been considered to activate a low-angle (∼17°) dextral-thrust fault at the depth of 10–20 km. However, most of its aftershocks have shallow centroid depths (8–12 km). The joint interpretation of finite source models, moment tensor and hypocentral location indicate that the 2018 Tazehabad and Sarpol-e Zahab earthquakes ruptured different strike-slip structures, providing evidence for the activation of the sinistral and dextral strike-slip faults, respectively. The deformation in the Lurestan arc is seismically accommodated by a complex fault system involving both thrust and strike-slip faults. Deformation monitoring has conventional increasing consideration in recent years due to its great importance in modern engineering. Darbandikhan town was hit by a strong earthquake on 12th November 2017 which is the Sarpol-e Zahab earthquake. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique has been used to investigate Darbandikhan town stability and the surrounding areas of the Kurdistan region in Iraq. The purpose of this research is to estimate the ground vertical displacement induced by the earthquake as well as the east-west deformation components. Moreover, previous research covered more of Iran's side country that the earthquake had an impact on with little on Iraq's side (Northern-eastern of Iraq), so it was worth researching on Darbandikhan town and surrounding structures to estimate the displacement on its infrastructures. For this study, two pairs of Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are used from each ascending and descending tracks over the study area to validate the work. Then, two differential interferograms are created from these images, along Darbandikhan town and the surrounding areas. These differential interferograms are then converted to line of sight (LOS) displacements using open source software (SNAP 8.0). The overall vertical displacement of the residential area of Darbandikhan was estimated from -4 to -10 cm after the earthquake, and the overall east-west displacement was ranging from 2 to 6.4 cm. The current study does not only examine the northern east of Iraq but the whole area of Iran and Iraq in general that lies within the influence of the earthquake. This research could be useful to estimate the overall deformation of Darbandikhan town in particular and the whole area in general. The influence of Karun river inflow on salinity intrusion from the Arabian Gulf towards the upper reaches of the Shatt Al-Arab river estuary was evaluated by using Mike11, a one-dimensional numerical modeling technique. The simulations results indicated that, during the moderate and low flow conditions of the Shatt Al-Arab river, freshwater inflow from Karun river at 10 and 40 m3/s, respectively, could be capable of keeping salinity extent to not exceeded the confluence location of these two rivers. Additionally, the results indicated that in the case of a sharp decline of Karun river inflow, additional releasing of freshwater from the Tigris river can completely compensate for the Karun inflow. While in the case of cut off of Tigris river, the Karun inflow in the range of 60 m3/s could be able to keep salinity extent beyond the Abo Flous station during the simulation period. Furthermore, the possibility of discharging water with high levels of salinity from the farming projects located at the lower basin of Karun river towards the Shatt Al-Arab river estuary was taken into account. In such cases, the results suggested that during low and moderate flow conditions, freshwater inflow by about 250 and 225 m3/s, respectively, should be released from the Karun river to remains salinity extent below the Abo Flous location. A water management policy agreement between Iraq and Iran could be an effective solution to the salinity issue both in the Shatt Al-Arab river estuary as well as Karun river. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The sandstones of Upper Miocene Injana Formation were studied petrographically and geochemically in the Hemrin South Mountain area, northern Iraq. The sandstones vary between arkose and lithic arkose in composition (Q50F24L26) and are compositionally and texturally immature; meanwhile, the Log(Fe2O3/K2O)–Log(SiO2/Al2O3) diagram shows that they are divided between arkose, litharenite and wacke. These sandstones contain a wide spectrum of heavy minerals ranging from the most resistant ultrastable minerals (zircon, rutile and tourmaline), to the least resistant non‐stable minerals (amphiboles and pyroxenes). The provenance indicator diagrams QmFLt and QtFL indicate multi‐sources for these sandstones ranging from transitional craton, arc and recycled sediments. The major element provenance discriminant function plot shows that they are derived mostly from intermediate igneous provenance. All these suggest that the probable source of these sandstones is the igneous‐metamorphic rocks including the ophiolites of the Suture Zone, the imbricate zone, the Shalair‐Sanandaj‐Sirjan Terrane and the complimentary rock units in Turkey and Iran. The presence of glaucophane as the provenance indicator mineral for subduction zones is a further proof of the ophiolites having acted as the source rocks. Geochemically, the sandstones are enriched in Ca, V, Cr, Ni, Cu, Mo, Sn and Sb and depleted in all othe major, trace and rare earth elements (REE) relative to upper continental crust (UCC). The chondrite‐normalized REE pattern shows a distinct negative slope for the LREEs and a slight negative slope for the HREEs with an enrichment of LREE/HREE of 8.11–10.90 and a negative Eu anomaly of 0.70–0.83. The most probable source of REEs is the heavy minerals detected in the sandstones. Tectonically, the studied rocks were derived from collision rifting arc–related settings. The Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA), Plagioclase Index of Alteration (PIA) and Index of Composition Variation (ICV) values of the Injana sandstones suggest that they are compositionally immature and suffered from very weak weathering indicating the proximity of their source rocks and their deposition under dry continental conditions. In World War I, sulfur mustard or mustard gas was used as a chemical weapon for the first time. Years later, during the imposed war (eight years of holy defense) against the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq used this poisonous gas against the soldiers and people of Iranian cities. Many years after the war, many chemical veterans still suffer from its effects. Mustard gas is a strong alkylating substance with cytotoxic and mutagenic properties, which causes blisters in mucous membranes and skin when it comes in contact with the skin. It is usually a colorless or amber-yellow oily liquid. In high concentrations, it has a disgusting smell similar to horseradish, onion, or garlic, which is mostly due to contamination with ethyl sulfide and other byproducts of its synthesis. Various studies have proven that long-term exposure to this toxic gas can lead to respiratory disorders and lung cancer. Considering the drug resistance and special conditions of chemical veterans with lung cancer, one of the new methods proposed for their treatment is the use of oncolytic viruses. This work focuses on the problem of constructing accurate prediction models using an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) from data that are scarce and poorly scaled. Many real-world problems have limited data to work with and yet require models with high prediction accuracy. Due to the fuzzy nature of many data sets, it is appropriate to construct prediction models using fuzzy inference systems (FIS), rather than traditional artificial neural network (ANN) models. However, the scarcity of the data raises serious concerns when attempting to construct models of this type. In this paper, we address the problem of constructing accurate prediction models using ANFIS in circumstances where capturing large amounts of data is difficult. We propose a new approach, using robust data expansion methods to enhance the data carefully. This approach provides the learning algorithm with enough representative data to allow all of the parameters (premise and consequent) to be optimised. We compare and contrast the effectiveness in reducing prediction error for three specific expansion models using radial basis function (RBF) kernels. When expanding data, for which the underlying smoothness properties are not known, there is often a danger of over-smoothing. This is usually noticeable at turning points and can occur when fitting the data using polynomials or cubic splines for example. To avoid over-smoothing, we introduce a modified multiquadric approach that allows smooth, near-interpolation while maintaining the desirable shape-preserving properties of the data. The proposed method is explained through two case studies — the first to predict gasoline consumption for the oil/fuel industry in Iraq and the second for predicting natural gas consumption in Iran. This is the first study that uses adjustable, shape-preserving re-sampling methods for optimising ANFIS models in low data environments. • ANFIS networks capture complexities not easily found using traditional ANNs. • Model complexity versus data sample size is a significant practical problem. • Data augmentation methods can be constructed using robust continuous models. • Multiquadric RBFs can be easily tuned to provide robust, accurate data expansion. • Complex models can be built with confidence using reliable data expansion. While initial discussions of the third mission of universities focussed on market-orientated behaviours of universities, more recently it has been connected to activities that focus on social justice and promoting sustainability (Trencher, Bai, Evans, McCormick & Yarime, 2014; Appe & Barragán, 2017). It has been suggested that the third mission of universities in the Global South may be particularly significant in addressing acutely felt issues of climate change, economic inequalities, food insecurity and urban sprawl. The current paper explores this and asks whether the quadruple helix (Carayannis & Campbell, 2010) is visible in their engagement activities. Using a synthesis of case studies developed as part of the 'Strengthening Urban Engagement of Universities in Africa and Asia' (SUEUAA) project, a collaborative research project spanning seven cities (Glasgow; Harare; Dar-es-Salaam; Johannesburg; Duhok; Sanandaj; and Manila), we explore ongoing engagement activities where universities respond to city demand. We frame this in terms of Sustainable Development Goals. Results indicate while universities were seen to address city demands, they often reacted without a network of other influential actors (i.e. industry, local government or NGO partners). This suggests that currently, the quadruple helix is underdeveloped in these cities, and more work should be done in creating closer links.

The Persian Gulf, regarded as the "heart" of the Middle East, witnessed the struggle of regional hegemony that took place between Iran and Iraq, which are the two important representatives of Arabic and Persian culture, during the 20th century. The balances in the area changed drastically with the United States of America's (USA) invasion of Iraq in 2003. One of the most important results of the war is that Iran, seizing the opportunity for strategic expansion in the Middle East in general and in the Persian Gulf in particular, attained indisputable supremacy against Iraq. After the invasion of Iraq The Teheran administration started to reshape its relations with Iraq.
