The prediction of river morphology evolution is very complicated, especially in the case of mountain and Piedmont rivers with complex morphologies, steep slopes, and heterogeneous grain sizes. The Lac des Gaves (LDG) reach, located within the Gave de Pau River in the Hautes-Pyrénées department, France, has precisely the complex morphological characteristics mentioned above. This reach has gone through severe sediment extractions for over 50 years, leading to the construction of two weirs for riverbed stabilisation. Two large floods resulted in changes in the LDG's hydromorphological characteristics as it went from a single channel river section to a braided river reach. In this study, a 2D hydromorphological model is developed with the TELEMAC-MASCARET system to reproduce the evolution of the channel following a flood that occurred in 2018. The model's validity is assessed by comparing the simulated topographic evolution to the observed one. The results reveal the challenge to choose well-fitted sediment transport equations and friction laws that would make it possible to reproduce such complex morphology. Although the exact localisation of the multiple channels forming the braided nature of the LDG was challenging to reproduce, our model was able to provide reliable volumetric predictions as it reproduces the filling of the LDG correctly. The influence of the two weirs on the river's current and future morphology is also studied. Foredunes provide many environmental and ecosystem services including protection from wave erosion and flooding hazards during storm events. While the impact of human interventions on the short-term evolution of coastal dunes is reasonably well understood, less is known about their contemporary influence on current wind and sediment dynamics several decades after implementation. The coastal dunes in Leucate (SE, France) have been anthropogenically constructed and are dominated by offshore wind conditions. Since their construction 20 years ago, a distinct variation in their longshore morphology has developed that is inherited from its original construction. The northern part of the dune has a symmetrical profile with a 28° degree stoss slope, 30° lee slope and a single crest. The southern part is asymmetric, with a gentler stoss slope (12°), 26° lee slope, and a double crest. To explore the potential geomorphic impacts of this distinct difference in morphology, several numerical simulations with varying wind speeds and direction were conducted. We used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to explore the spatial variations of the near surface wind flow, shear stress and aeolian sediment transport. show that for each scenario, near surface wind speed accelerated toward the dune crest on the windward slope of the dune. The maximum wind speed varied with incident wind direction, the highest speeds occurring when incident wind flow was perpendicular to the dune crest. The double crest in the southern section of the dune affected the wind flow by inducing two consecutive speeds-up zones, with a greater maximum wind speed than on the single crested dune. Wind flow separation was observed where a steep lee slope was present (single crested dune), and only during perpendicular winds. This suggests that the shape of the dune and the direction of the wind are key parameters rather than wind speed. The area affected by reversed separated flow was spatially limited and did not extend beyond the dune toe but was below the threshold for aeolian sediment transport. Elsewhere in the lee of the dune, the wind was only deflected by an order of 15° for the oblique winds (310 and 330°), and less than 10° for the perpendicular wind (290°) on the southern part. In these locations, the shear velocity exceeded the threshold, notably on the southern dune, which coincided with the formation of undulating aeolian deposits in the lee of vegetation on the dune crest. The spatial differences observed in wind flow and aeolian sediment transport processes on this human-made dune were directly inherited from differences in their construction two decades ago. Although geologically constrained sandy beaches are ubiquitous along wave-exposed coasts, there is still a limited understanding of their morphological response, particularly under storm conditions, which is mainly due to a critical lack of nearshore bathymetry observations. This paper examines the potential to derive bathymetries from video imagery under challenging wave conditions in order to investigate headland control on morphological beach response. For this purpose, a video-based linear depth inversion algorithm is applied to three consecutive weeks of frames collected during daylight hours from a single fixed camera located at La Petite Chambre d'Amour beach (Anglet, SW France). Video-derived bathymetries are compared against in situ topo-bathymetric surveys carried out at the beginning and end of the field experiment in order to assess the performance of the bathymetric estimates. The results show that the rates of accretion/erosion within the surf zone are strongly influenced by the headland, whereas the beach morphological response can be classified into three main regimes depending on the angle of wave incidence θ p : (1) under deflection configuration ( θ p > 0 ° ), the alongshore sediment transport was trapped at the updrift side of the headland, promoting sand accretion. (2) Under shadowed configuration ( θ p < 0 ° ), the interruption of the longshore current drove a deficit of sand supply at the downdrift side of the headland, leading to an overall erosion in the surf zone. (3) Under shore-normal configuration ( θ p = 0 ° ), rip channels developed, and up-state beach transition was observed. A comparison between video-derived bathymetries and surveys shows an overall root mean square error (RMSE) around 0.49 to 0.57 m with a bias ranging between −0.36 and −0.29 m. The results show that video-derived bathymetries can provide new insight into the morphological change driven by storm events. The combination of such inferred bathymetry with video-derived surface current data is discussed, showing great potential to address the coupled morphodynamics system under time-varying wave conditions. Submarine channels are the main conduits and intermediate stores for sediment transport into the deep sea, including organics, pollutants, and microplastics. Key drivers of morphological change in channels are upstream-migrating knickpoints whose initiation has typically been linked to episodic processes such as avulsion, bend cutoff, and tectonics. The initiation of knickpoints in submarine channels has never been described, and questions remain about their evolution. Sedimentary and flow processes enabling the maintenance of such features in non-lithified substrates are also poorly documented. Repeated high-resolution multibeam bathymetry between 2012 and 2018 in the Capbreton submarine canyon (southeastern Bay of Biscay, offshore France) demonstrates that knickpoints can initiate autogenically at meander bends over annual to multi-annual time scales. Partial channel clogging at tight bends is shown to predate the development of new knickpoints. We describe this initiation process and show a detailed morphological evolution of knickpoints over time. The gradients of knickpoint headwalls are sustained and can grow over time as they migrate through headward erosion. This morphology, associated plunge pools, and/or development of enhanced downstream erosion are linked herein to the formation and maintenance of hydraulic jumps. These insights of autogenically driven, temporally high-frequency knickpoints reveal that cut-and-fill cycles with depths of multiple meters can be the norm in submarine systems. Hydromorphodynamic models are powerful tools for predicting the potential mobilization and transport of sediment in river ecosystems. Recent studies have shown that they are able to predict suspended sediment matter concentration in small river systems satisfactorily. However, hydro-sedimentary modelling exercises often neglect suspended sediment properties (e.g. sediment densities and grain-size distribution), which are known to directly control sediment dynamics in the water column during flood events. The main objective of this study is to assess whether a better representation of such properties leads to an improved performance in the model. The modelling approach utilizes a fully coupled hydromorphodynamic model based on TELEMAC-3D (v7p1) and an enhanced version of the sediment transport module SISYPHE (based on v7p1), which allows for a refined sediment representation (i.e. 10-class sediment mixtures instead of 2-class mixtures and distributed sediment density instead of uniform). The proposed developments of the SISYPHE model enable us to evaluate and discuss the added value of sediment representation refinement for improving sediment transport and riverbed evolution predictions. To this end, we used several model set-ups to evaluate the influence of sediment grain-size distribution, sediment density, and suspended sediment concentration at the upstream boundary on model predictions. As a test case, we simulated a flood event in a small-scale river, the Orne river in north-eastern France. Depending on the model set-up, the results show substantial discrepancies in terms of simulated bathymetry evolutions. Moreover, the model based on an enhanced configuration of the sediment grain-size distribution (10 classes of particle sizes) and with distinct densities per class outperforms the standard SISYPHE configuration, with only two sediment grain-size classes, in terms of simulated suspended sediment concentration. Dune dynamics and associated sedimentary fluxes have been estimated over a period of a week in the river Seine characterised by limited sediment supply. Distributed into two corridors, typical medium and small dunes associated with fluvial environments have been characterised from multibeam data acquired on four dates, 23-29 March 2021, after a limited peak flood. Dune morphometric parameters have been quantified on cross-dune 1 m spacing of bed elevation profiles and dune migration rates have been calculated by analysing successive multibeam acquisitions. Evidence of limited sediment supply conditions have been recognised from areas uncovered by mobile sediment in the troughs between medium dunes. Under such conditions, bedload transport associated with dune migration has been estimated using three methods: differential bathymetry, dune tracking and the Van Rijn empirical formula using a correction factor accounting for limited sediment supply conditions. The three methods provide similar bedload fluxes (less than an order of magnitude difference), and the small differences are related to input data uncertainties and the capability of these methods to capture sediment transport processes, such as sediment bypassing dunes. Over the last two centuries, rivers worldwide have been affected by human interventions, including dams, river training, and gravel mining. Such actions have often involved river fragmentation and sediment starvation. In this regard, gravel augmentation is an increasingly common restoration practice for mitigating sediment starvation in gravel-bed rivers. However, uncertainties remain on how to better implement and design such operations. This is the case for the Rhône River at Péage-de-Roussillon, France, where 6885 m3 of gravels were augmented in 2017. This work raised some concerns from river managers about the potential threat posed to a downstream reservoir from the arrival of the sediment, and explains why they were interested in the timeframe of sediment propagation, and travel distances and velocities of the augmented sediment. To answer these questions, we propose a modelling framework for simulating the long-term downstream propagation of a pulse of augmented sediment, with this framework being based on a combination of particle tracking data collected in the field and bedload transport capacity estimates. This workflow allowed us to successfully model propagation of gravels along the study reach, and provided useful information on how the sediment wave would behave over the long term. Wind waves breaking at an angle with the shoreline force the drifting of littoral sediments, which is known for contributing to the formation and growth of barrier spits. Intriguingly, increased rates of longshore wave power have also been associated with the erosion of some barrier spits on the updrift margin of tidal inlets. Therefore, a numerical experiment was designed and is presented here, which investigates the possible links between the longshore wave power and the shortening of these elongated coastal barriers. Based on a process-based model, the experiment provides new insights into the forces at play in the redistribution of sediments between a sandspit and its adjacent inlet, respectively the Cap Ferret and the Bay of Arcachon's tidal inlet, in SW France. More particularly, model scenarios were defined that show how combined waves and tide create gradients of residual sediment transport responsible for a sediment deficit at the spit – inlet boundary. The deficit was also found to deepen with increasing longshore wave energy, as if the transfer of sediment from the spit to inlet shoals was accelerated. This physically explains the previously observed retreat of the spit's distal end during periods dominated by the positive phase of North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) in winter. Indeed, according to model results, higher and/or more oblique waves associated with the positive phase of the NAO are expected to increase the transfer and storage of the drifting sediments to and by the inlet shoals, and this at the expense of the spit. While these conclusions remain valid, we noticed that the sensitivity of model results to the bottom friction enhanced the importance of accurately representing the spatio-temporal distribution of bed roughness when investigating the morphodynamic interactions between real-world tidal inlets and their margins. • Residual sediment transport is modelled at a mixed energy tidal inlet. • Waves with tides create transport gradients near the inlet's updrift spit extremity. • Larger or more oblique waves deepen this gradient and reinforce the sand deficit. • Physically sounded explanation to enhanced spit erosion during NAO + winters. • Bed roughness models need to be improved for 2DH inlet-spit morphodynamic modelling. Abstract: Soil erosion is one of the major drivers of landscape evolution in Western Europe. However, depending on the land use characteristics and on the geological and topographical settings, miscellaneous forms of erosion may lead to a very diverse morphological evolution. A key element is the connection between the hillslope and the river. In this context, the objective of this study is to investigate to what extent eroded soil particles contribute to river sediment exports for the major French basins. The hillslope erosion rates are deduced from a distributed pan-European assessment of hillslope, rill, and interrill erosion by water, which was quantified by interpolation of erosion plot data as a function of topographical, land use, and pedological parameters. Sediment fluxes were mainly assessed from the French river quality database using an improved rating curve approach from the daily discharge data (IRCA), which allows estimation of the mean annual suspended sediment load. A similar approach based on the same datasets was used to calculate the mean annual dissolved load over the same period. The resulting mean annual suspended sediment loads show that French rivers export approximately 50 Mt of sediments per year to the seas, including ca. 17 Mt as particulate matter, corresponding to a specific sediment yield of ca. 0.4tha−1 yr−1. No relationship was found between the mass of the exported sediment and the size of the drainage basins, but large differences were observed between the different basins. For the Seine river basin and the Rhône river basin, the estimated average gross erosion rates are comparable, with ca. 1.14tha−1 yr−1 for the Rhone and ca. 1.80tha−1 yr−1 for the Seine. In contrast, the Rhône exports ca. 10 times more than the Seine River. The ratio of gross erosion to sediment exports calculated in this work ranges from 6.8% for the Seine to more than 100% for the Rhône. Polybromodiphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in superficial sediments from the Gulf of Lion were studied. They were largely predominated by BDE 209 (98.7% of all PBDEs) indicating that the main source of these pollutants was the commercial mixture deca-BDE. This compound and the less brominated BDE exhibited a southwestward decreasing concentration gradient following the dominant marine currents and bottom relief, e.g. the Mud Belt, the submarine canyons and the Open Continental Slope. All PBDEs exhibited statistically significant correlations confirming the common origin. However, a progressive transformation of the dumped BDE 209 was identified showing a depletion paralleled by increases of the less brominated BDEs (from 8.6% to 22%). These less brominated compounds were accumulated at about 100–140km away from the Rhone prodelta, e.g. at the end of the submarine canyons, evidencing that these transformation compounds can be accumulated at long distances from the dumping sites in the marine system. Steep mountain catchments typically experience large sediment pulses from hillslopes which are stored in headwater channels and remobilized by debris-flows or bedload transport. Event-based sediment budget monitoring in the active Manival debris-flow torrent in the French Alps during a two-year period gave insights into the catchment-scale sediment routing during moderate rainfall intensities which occur several times each year. The monitoring was based on intensive topographic resurveys of low- and high-order channels using different techniques (cross-section surveys with total station and high-resolution channel surveys with terrestrial and airborne laser scanning). Data on sediment output volumes from the main channel were obtained by a sediment trap. Two debris-flows were observed, as well as several bedload transport flow events. Sediment budget analysis of the two debris-flows revealed that most of the debris-flow volumes were supplied by channel scouring (more than 92 %). Bedload transport during autumn contributed to the sediment recharge of high-order channels by the deposition of large gravel wedges. This process is recognized as being fundamental for debris-flow occurrence during the subsequent spring and summer. A time shift of scour-and-fill sequences was observed between low- and high-order channels, revealing the discontinuous sediment transfer in the catchment during common flow events. Abstract: On 10th March 2008, the high energy storm Johanna hit the French Atlantic coast, generating severe dune erosion on Vougot Beach (Brittany, France). In this paper, the recovery of the dune of Vougot Beach is analysed through a survey of morphological changes and hydrodynamic conditions. Data collection focused on the period immediately following storm Johanna until July 2010, i.e. over two and a half years. Results showed that the dune retreated by a maximum of almost 6m where storm surge and wave attack were the most energetic. Dune retreat led to the creation of accommodation space for the storage of sediment by widening and elevating space between the pre- and post-storm dune toe, and reducing impacts of the storm surge. Dune recovery started in the month following the storm event and is still ongoing. It is characterised by the construction of “secondary” embryo dunes, which recovered at an average rate of 4–4.5cm per month, although average monthly volume changes varied from −1 to 2m3.m−1. These embryo dunes accreted due to a large aeolian sand supply from the upper tidal beach to the existing foredune. These dune-construction processes were facilitated by growth of vegetation on low-profile embryo dunes promoting backshore accretion. After more than two years of survey, the sediment budget of the beach/dune system showed that more than 10,000m3 has been lost by the upper tidal beach. We suggest that seaward return currents generated during the storm of 10th March 2008 are responsible for offshore sediment transport. Reconstitution of the equilibrium beach profile following the storm event may therefore have generated cross-shore sediment redistribution inducing net erosion in the tidal zone. The present contribution aims to provide an insight into the sediment dynamics of the Bay of Marseille (BoM), France, an area characterised by a mostly rocky, steep-sloped, and protected shoreline. In terms of sediment composition, the northern part of the study area is dominated by fines, whereas sands of mean grain size 0.2 , d50 , 1 mm occur at most other locations. Posidonia oceanica meadows occupy many nearshore areas. Critical bed-shear stress was determined through tests in a unidirectional flume using 15 natural cores. Measured values ranged from 0.04 N/m2 to 0.46 N/m2 and were expressed as a function of the logarithm of d50. Mud content had no observable effect on sediment cohesion, whereas a weak positive trend between critical shear stress and clay content was discerned. Autonomous benthic stations (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler/Conductivity, Temperature, Depth/Turbidity/ALTUS Data Collection System) were deployed for periods of 2-3 months, and several suspension and erosion events were identified for significant wave heights exceeding 1.5 m. Grain-size trends showed that the protected BoM appeared to favour accumulation of sediments advected from the surrounding areas. The southern sector of the BoM was found to be the area with the highest sediment agitation and erosion rates but with weak transport trends. The northern sector, exposed to dominant SW waves, was shown to be the second most active area in terms of sediment dynamics, whereas the several Posidonia oceanica meadows and sheltered locations along the study area appeared to be possible sediment sinks. The latter included locations close to port installations and the western part of the Cortiou area, known to have water quality issues, which, according to the present findings, are linked to low sediment mobility and/or dispersion of pollutants. Intermittent rivers have a specific hydrological behaviour which also influences water quality dynamics. The objective of this work was to model the flow and water quality dynamics of a coastal Mediterranean intermittent river using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT 2005). Flow, sediment, nitrogen and phosphorus transport were simulated on the Vene experimental catchment, France. The model was sequentially calibrated at sub-catchment scale and validated both at sub-catchment and catchment scales. A procedure for building the data records for the point sources is presented. The results indicate that, while the model produces good results for flow simulation, its performance for sediment transport is less satisfactory. This in turn impacts on the nutrient transport module. The reasons behind these shortcomings are analysed, taking into account the length of the data records, their distribution and the equations used in the SWAT model. Shelf-to-basin sediment transport during storms was studied at the southwestern end of the Gulf of Lions from November 2003 to March 2004. Waves, near-bottom currents, temperature and sediment fluxes were measured on the inner shelf at 28-m depth, in the Cap de Creus submarine canyon head at 300-m depth and in the northwestern Mediterranean basin at 2350-m depth. This paper is a synthesis of results published separately in different papers; it includes some new data and focusses on the subject of storms. It is the first paper in which simultaneous data about the effect of storms on the shelf, the slope and in the basin are shown together. During the winter studied, there were two severe E-SE storms with significant wave heights ≥ 7 m: one in December 2003 and one in February 2004. During these storms, coastal water was exported off-shelf producing strong near-bottom currents (up to 82 cm s-1) at the canyon head that resuspended sediment and increased the downcanyon sediment fluxes by several orders of magnitude. The suspended sediment flux increase in the canyon head was much larger during the February storm than during the December storm. At the deep basin site, particle fluxes also increased drastically (1-2 orders of magnitude) immediately after the February storm but not after the December storm. The reason was that the February storm was reinforced by dense shelf water cascading and was long enough (43 h) to transfer large amounts of resuspended sediment from shallow shelf areas to the canyon head and from there to the northwestern Mediterranean basin. Thus, in the western Gulf of Lions, severe winter E-SE storms occurring during the dense shelf water cascading period can significantly increase the transfer to deep-sea (> 2000 m) environments of shelf and slope resuspended material, including anthropogenic contaminants and organic matter. Abstract: This article presents numerical simulations for the turbidity maximum (TM) in the Seine estuary using a 2-D vertical width-integrated two-phase flow model. The results are in rather good agreement with observations in a natural environment. The displacement of the TM is reproduced and a concentrated particles layer is observed on the numerical results. These results highlight the interest of this innovative approach for sediment transport simulations in estuary: no erosion or deposition laws are imposed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The changes in both physical and chemical properties of interstitial water were investigated within a large gravel bar to determine if the parafluvial zone was a hotspot for nutrient transformations in a lowland eutrophic river, the Doubs (Eastern France). Interstitial water was sampled in 30 piezometers along five transects across the gravel bar, surface water was sampled in main and chute channels. Five campaigns of sampling were performed among summer and winter. In both interstitial and surface samples, water chemistry (electrical conductivity, pH, chloride, dissolved oxygen concentrations—DO) and nutrient concentrations (nitrate—NO3 −, ammonium—NH4 +, soluble reactive phosphorus—SRP, dissolved organic carbon—DOC) were measured. Moreover, temperature, water level, sediment grain size distribution and total bacterial abundance were assessed along a flowpath through a lateral gravel bar of the Doubs River. Measurements of water table elevation in the bar, main and chute channels indicated that the parafluvial flowpath was perpendicular to the main channel. Very low changes in chloride concentration and electrical conductivity showed minor groundwater input along the flowpath. The parafluvial zone was 0.9 m thick under the mean piezometric level, hydraulic gradients along the flowpath were 0.3%, and the discharge of interstitial water through the bar calculated at low flow was 40.6 m3 day−1. Most changes in interstitial nutrients occurred during the warm season, suggesting that biotic mechanisms occurred. Along the flowpath, DO, DOC, and bacterial abundance declined, while phosphate increased. Temporal trends of nitrate were less clear, exhibiting a slight increase during spring (organic matter biodegradation) and a decrease during summer (denitrification). Using the parafluvial discharge and nutrient concentrations of water infiltrating into and seeping from the gravel bar, the retention capacity of the bar was 171 gC day−1 for DOC and 48.3 gN day−1 for nitrate. Phosphate production ranged from 0.65 to 2.3 gP day−1. These values were low compared to the nutrient fluxes in the river Doubs, suggesting a minimal local impact of the parafluvial zone in regulating of river pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A ten-year physical and ecological restoration programme was defined for the Rhone River in 1998. Initially, one of its main objectives was to increase the minimum flow in several by-passed sections, with the clear goal of improving the fluvial habitat and the general ecological functioning of the river. A complex consultation process which brought together the hydropower industry, regional civil organisations, and local civil representatives was adopted to define more precisely the local measures to be taken. In the course of this process, the programme underwent a progressive change from purely ecological to more socially motivated outcomes such as improving amenity values and flood defence. We studied how increasing the minimum flow is a topic that can or cannot be discussed by the actors during the consultation process. For example, there is less discussion about the ecological value than about the economic value of the restoration programme between the hydropower industry and the local elected members. But, the various actors readily debate with the scientists about floods and sedimentary transport, linked with local knowledge. We applied a multidisciplinary approach, involving sociology and ecological sciences, to question the restoration programme and to analyse its hybrid results in terms of both the ecological and amenity values and at the same time to understand the governance process. Abstract: Since 1834 the Seine estuary (France) has been the site of numerous construction projects with the aim to accommodate and secure boat traffic. Since 1978, the increasing of the activities of Le Havre port, located at the mouth of the estuary, has accelerated the construction work rate. Several dykes, a bridge, and new port facilities have been constructed in rapid succession, modifying considerably the hydrodynamic conditions which sustain a partially vegetated sandy–muddy tidal flat located in the North bank of the estuary between the new port of Le Havre and the Normandy bridge achieved in 1995. The present study deals with the morphological evolution of this zone from 1978 to 2005. The use of a low altitude remote sensing technique combined with traditional methods of ground survey and probes allow to demonstrate the impact of human activities on sedimentary and vegetation dynamics. The Northern mudflat of the estuary is the most affected by these human activities, which surface have reduced of 62% during the last 27 years with an intensified local erosion during the last 27 months corresponding to a loss 1250000 m3 of fine-grained sediment. At the same time, the general sanding up in the channel of the zone has caused a loss of more than 31% of the tidal prism, more than three quarters of which occurred during the last three years. Results also establish that the response times of the sedimentary or topographic readjustment to an installation depend on the extent and the nature of the construction. In fact, the sedimentary readjustments to an installation can be delayed by up to 10 years in the case of the Seine estuary. This delay is explained by a rapid succession of construction works which may occult the effect of a single installation. Except in the case of a dyke built perpendicular to ebb and flood currents, the impacts of these installations reach a hydro-sedimentary equilibrium on the level between 1 and 7 years after their completion. The applicability of grain-size trend analysis for determining sediment transport pathways was investigated on two macrotidal shorefaces of the southern North Sea and Dover Strait where sediment transport is strongly controlled by well-defined, shore-parallel, tidal currents. Sediment transport directions were defined following the Gao and Collins (Sedimentary Geology, 80, 47-60) method, using surficial sediment samples collected from 0 to 8 m water depths. Grain-size trend analysis produced results in relatively good agreement with the directions of near-bottom currents measured in the vicinity of the sampling sites in some cases, but also yielded more confused patterns of calculated transport vectors in others. The best results were obtained when using discrete sets of samples collected during a distinct half tide-cycle. Comparison of threshold shear velocity for sediment motion with estimates of bed shear velocity obtained from near-bottom current data recorded simultaneously with sediment sampling indicates that sediment transport was most likely occurring when sediment samples were collected, suggesting that the grain-size trends observed in the surface sediments probably reflect the last transport event. Our results suggest that grain-size trend analysis can be efficient for determining the mean transport direction of the last sediment transport event when applied to small areas and when sampling is limited to the thickness of the active layer of sediment remobilisation. This method may be appropriate, however, for defining time-averaged residual transport directions when applied to larger areas over which progressive variations in surface sediment distribution reflect a longer term adjustment to hydraulic regime. The mouth of the Seine River estuary (France) has undergone marked morphological evolution over several decades mainly due to engineering works aimed at improving access to Rouen and Le Havre harbours. The intertidal areas are decreasing in size and the lower estuary is accumulating sediment and prograding. In order to understand and better describe the major morphological behaviours of the estuary, a morphodynamic numerical model was developed within the Seine-Aval program. At the end of the 1st part of the research program, a validated fine sediment transport model (3D) was available (Le Hir et al., b). As the present morphological study addresses medium-term issues (a few decades), and because of the need to investigate impacts of local structures or events, we chose to use the so-called “process-based approach” starting from the existing model. First, the existing model was upgraded to account for (suspended) sand transport, and to achieve coupling between morphological changes and sediment transport. Erodability of the sediment accounts for the respective proportions of mud and sand. Simulations starting from an arbitrary surficial sediment cover show that the model is able to reproduce realistic sediment patterns. For example, it is able to change the sediment nature on the intertidal flat near Le Havre from sand to mud. Observed structures of suspended sediment are also reproduced: fine particles mainly follow the turbidity maximum whereas significant concentrations of sand grains in suspension are found where the hydrodynamic stresses are intense. Concerning morphodynamics, simulations with real forcing over one year are discussed. Understanding the dynamics of fine sediment transport across the upper intertidal zone is critical in managing the erosion and accretion of intertidal areas, and in managed realignment/estuarine habitat recreation strategies. This paper examines the transfer of sediments between salt marsh and mudflat environments in two contrasting macrotidal estuaries: the Seine (France) and the Medway (UK), using data collected during two joint field seasons undertaken by the Anglo-French RIMEW project (Rives-Manche Estuary Watch). High-resolution ADCP, Altimeter, OBS and ASM measurements from mudflat and marsh surface environments have been combined with sediment trap data to examine short-term sediment transport processes under spring tide and storm flow conditions. In addition, the longer-term accumulation of sediment in each salt marsh system has been examined via radiometric dating of sediment cores. In the Seine, rapid sediment accumulation and expansion of salt marsh areas, and subsequent loss of open intertidal mudflats, is a major problem, and the data collected here indicate a distinct net landward flux of sediments into the marsh interior. Suspended sediment fluxes are much higher than in the Medway estuary (averaging 0.09 g/m3/s), and vertical accumulation rates at the salt marsh/mudflat boundary exceed 3 cm/y. Suspended sediment data collected during storm surge conditions indicate that significant in-wash of fine sediments into the marsh interior can occur during (and following) these high-magnitude events. In contrast to the Seine, the Medway is undergoing erosion and general loss of salt marsh areas. Suspended sediment fluxes are of the order of 0.03 g/m3/s, and the marsh system here has much lower rates of vertical accretion (sediment accumulation rates are ca. 4 mm/y). Current velocity data for the Medway site indicate higher velocities on the ebb tide than occur on the flood tide, which may be sufficient to remobilise sediments deposited on the previous tide and so force net removal of material from the marsh. A study of the particulate organic carbon (POC) in the estuarine turbidity maxima (ETMs) of the three major French macrotidal estuaries shows that the average contents are 1.5, 3.3 and 3.1% (expressed in % of dry suspended sediment) in the Gironde, Loire and Seine Estuaries, respectively. There is no seasonal variation of POC contents in the Gironde Estuary, whereas, they often increase in the Loire and the Seine Estuaries in spring and summer. The lability of the estuarine particulate organic matter was estimated by two analyses: 1/labile organic matter was measured as the organic carbon loss during incubation tests over one month; 2/ the hydrolysable organic fraction was determined after 6N HCl digestion. The organic fractions of the ETMs are mainly refractory. Any increase in the amount of POC as compared to the background levels (cited above) is always correlated to an increase of organic matter lability. The yearly average fluvial contributions by various particulate organic pools (soil and litter organic matter; organic matter of phytoplanktonic and human origin) that enter the three estuaries were quantified. In the Garonne River, soil and litter are the major (90%) POC sources. In the Loire system, due to the eutrophication of the river water, phytoplankton contributes up to 50% of the total POC load. In the Seine river, soil and litter contribute 70% of the total POC input; POC of human origin is also significant (10%), due to the impact of the City of Paris (10 million inhabitants). The lability of the different types of organic matter ranks as follows: phytoplankton ∼litter > human-origin organic matter >> soil. By combining the POC budgets and the lability of each type of organic fraction, it was possible to explain why the POC of the three ETMs is different and characterizes its refractory vs. labile nature. Temporal and spatial variability of the Abra alba–Pectinaria koreni and Macoma balthica communities was examined in the northern part of the Seine estuary (North Channel) over different space and time scales in order to assess the role that the hydrologic regime and/or anthropogenic influences play in defining benthic communities over time. Sediment in the North Channel displayed strong spatial and temporal variability, sustained by intense sediment transport episodes. Total macrobenthic abundances ranged widely on the course of the year and there was no evidence of a seasonal signal for the density fluctuations, whatever the spatial scale considered. The bio-sedimentary dynamics can be divided into two periods: the first corresponds to the high flow rate period (January–May) during which fauna is influenced by fine silt/clay deposition, and the second to the low flow rate period (June–December) during which sandy deposits prevail. Despite the absence of significant correlations between sediment composition and abundance, episodes of sediment transport seem to be an important structuring mechanism in the Seine estuary. As a consequence, the faunal composition varied throughout the year. The winter and spring fauna, characterised by species living on muddy fine-sands or muds, were enriched during the summer and autumn by species living in clean fine sand, such as Donax vittatus, Nephtys cirrosa or Spio decoratus, mainly represented by adult individuals. Secondary settlement of drifters may explain the rapid structuration of assemblages a few days after the sandy deposits. Our results suggest the importance of the bentho-pelagic coupling, primarily induced by the sedimentary instability, on the macrobenthic fauna dynamics. The intra-annual variability of assemblages at the mouth of the Seine river and the silted situation of the North Channel might simply be the result of the silting up and alteration of the inner estuary, generated by several decades of man-made modifications and natural processes. Abstract: This paper investigates the relative influence of waves, wind-induced current and tidal current on the sediment mobility of a macro-tidal environment belonging to the inner shelf seaward of the ‘pertuis Charentais’ (France). This study, mainly based on three-week hydrodynamic in-situ measurements, shows that, for a water depth of 23 m, the swell (rather than wind waves) orbital velocity is large enough to initiate the motion of medium sands that are then transported by currents. Estimations show that medium sand of 0.2 mm is transported during 92% of the measurements, whereas coarse sand and gravel move sporadically, during storm, synchronously with spring tides. Forty-nine sediments were sampled along the coast of the Seine bay: 19 from the Port-en-Bessin harbor and 30 from the Bay des Veys. Metallic and polychlorinated biphenyl contaminations were estimated in harbor sediments by their comparison to the OSPAR Convention guidelines. Sediments in Bay des Veys were considered as nonpolluted materials and metal concentrations were chosen as regional reference data to calculate anthropogenic factor and gave human contributions of each metal in harbor sediments. The source of the principal pollutants was principally associated with the careening activities and the use of antifouling paints. A statistical study of data showed strong relationships between metals, organic matter, and fine-grained fraction (<50 μm) of sediments, assuming mobility of metals to water column in case of removal. The greatest change in particle roundness, sphericity, and size in most fluvial systems generally occurs in the initial first few kilometers of sediment transport. Observations in natural settings and laboratory experiments have shown that changes, such as increased grain rounding and decreased size due to particle breakage, wear, and attrition, tend to be progressive along the dispersal path. In marked contrast, this study records highly variable and poorly developed particle-texture trends downslope along short (<5 km) channels that extend directly from a high-relief carbonate source area down to the shore of Lake Annecy in the western Alps, SE France. The observed inconsistent patterns are measured in both a region-wide analysis using all collected samples and also in a more specific survey of samples in six different channels incised on the steep, topographically irregular mountain flanks that border the lake. The major factor responsible for the irregular downslope patterns of roundness, sphericity, and size in the Annecy study area is the lateral introduction of sediment into the fluvial channels along dispersal paths. Episodic failure of mechanically unstable sediments and their transport down steep valley walls bring less-abraded sediment of variable shape and size along the dispersal paths. The impact of combined sewer overflows on the Seine River was studied for the scientific interest of understanding highly transient situations and for the management challenges they represent.Measurements were made in the Seine River downstream of a combined sewer overflow (CSO) to identify the relevant variables describing the evolution of water quality. The combined effects of various processes influencing oxygen depletion after a rain event were analysed given all the available data. A complete oxygen balance was established to rank the relative importance of the processes.The model ProSe used for these tasks was designed in the framework of a long term multidisciplinary research program devoted to the Seine River catchment. A comparison of the model we used with existing models was done. The conceptual model was especially adapted for this highly impacted urban ecosystem. Apart from usual processes considered in river ecological modelling, sedimentation and erosion of particles, a biologically active and mobile benthic boundary layer (BBL), exchange of particles and diffusion of solutes between this BBL and the water column, detailed descriptions of algal and bacteria physiology were taken into account.To explain the oxygen depletion in the river, the more relevant variables appear to be the quantity of bacteria brought by the overflow and the biodegradable dissolved organic carbon concentrations. Specific contribution to the evolution of water quality of the river of particles that are sedimenting, was investigated, including the micro organisms brought by the overflows.For this highly eutrophicated river, the influence of the reduction of photosynthesis activity due to cloud cover was quantified. The influence of the toxicity of the CSO on the phytoplanktonic photosynthesis was studied experimentally and taken into account in the model. The formation and long-term evolution of an estuarine bank of the Gironde mouth, SW France (the Saint-Georges Bank) is studied through the comparison of nine historical bathymetric maps (1677, 1723, 1825, 1874, 1892, 1920, 1.940, 1960, and 1992) and information obtained during a recent bathymetric survey (! 999). The data show that the initial formation of Saint-Georges Bank occurred at the end of the 17th or the beginning of the 18th century and it could be related to the other morphological changes which took place at the estuarine inlet and particularly to the gradual destruction of the downstream estuarine shoal of Grande Barre, which (a) changed the inshore hydrodynamic regime, (b) allowed large quantities of marine sediments to move further upstream along the coast and (c) made large quantities of sand-sized sediments available. The Saint Georges Bank growth during the past centuries can be differentiated into 3 stages: Stage 1 (1723–1892), which has been characterized by a vertical and lateral (down-stream) bank .growth (with an average rate of accretion of about 0.3 ⊗ 106 m³ yr-1); Stage II (1892–1960), which is characterized by a relatively slow development (with an average growth rate of about 0.15 ⊗ 106 m³ yr-1); and Stage III (1960–1999), which is characterized by a rapid bank growth (with an accretion rate of about 0.7 ⊗ 106 m³ yr-1) and a anticlockwise rotation of the crest. The morphological and sedimentological data (side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiling data and surficial sediment samples) which were collected during the present investigation suggest that Saint Georges Bank is likely to be maintained by a complex hydrodynamic/sediment dynamic regime consisting of a clockwise residual tidal circulation, headland associated secondary flows and trapping of sediments in a zone contained between mutually evasive sediment transport paths. Wave dynamics contribute significantly to coastal hazards and were thus investigated at Vougot Beach by simulating both historical and projected future waves considering climate change impacts. The historical period included a major storm event. This period was projected to the future using three globally averaged sea level rise (SLR) scenarios for 2100, and combined SLR and wave climate scenarios for A1B, A2, and B1 emissions paths of the IPCC. The B1 wave climate predicts an increase in the occurrence of storm events. The simulated waves in all scenarios showed larger relative changes at the beach than in the nearshore area. The maximum increase of wave energy for the combined SLR and wave scenarios was 95%, while only 50% for the SLR-only scenarios. The effective bed shear stress from waves and currents showed different spatial variability than that of the wave height, emphasizing the importance of interactions between nearshore waves and currents. Increases in the effective bed shear stress (combined scenarios: up to 190%, and SLR-only scenarios: 35%) indicate that the changes in waves and currents will likely have significant impacts on the nearshore sediment transport. This work emphasizes that combined SLR and future wave climate scenarios need to be used to evaluate future changes in local hydrodynamics and their impacts. These results provide preliminary insights into potential future wave dynamics at Vougot Beach under different climate change scenarios. Further studies are necessary to generalize the results by investigating the wave dynamics during storm events with different hydrodynamical conditions and to evaluate potential changes in sediment transport and morphological evolution due to climate change. The domain of Chantilly (Oise, France) includes a castle and a garden, both dating from the eighteenth century, which are seen as important legacies of France's history. Nowadays, the 2.5 km canal that runs through the domain is subject to the phenomenon of silting, leading to the accumulation of sediments within the canal linked to the proliferation of algae, which has a dissuasive effect among visitors. HEC-RAS software (Hydrologic Engineering Centers River Analysis System, US army corps of Engineers, Washington, D.C., USA) was used to model and understand sediment accumulation within the canal. This model is widely used in the literature tackling sediment transport and accumulation, and allows the forecasting of which stretches of the canal are most susceptible to sediment accumulation. The simulation results highlight an accumulation of sediment near the entrance of the Nonette stream into the canal and a propagation through the canal. The total accumulated volume assessed by the model between 2001 and 2010 equals 3901 m3, when the reconnaissance of the catchment showed the sediment was not a limiting factor. However, the volumes determined are underestimated, as matter brought by vegetation or other systems different from the river (e.g., wind, rainfall) is not considered in the calculation. An increasing number of scientific studies are tackling the management of discharges downstream of dams for environmental objectives. Such management is generally complex, and experiments are required for proper implementation. This article present the main lessons from a silt sand removal experiment on a bypassed reach of a dam on the Selves River (164 km²), France. Three four-hour operational tests at maximum discharge (10, 15, and 20 m3/s) were carried out in September 2016 to determine the discharge required for transporting as much silt and sand as possible without remobilizing coarser sediments. In September 2017, an additional flow release was performed over 34 h at 15 m3/s. Suspended sediment concentration and water level were recorded throughout the releases. Monitoring at the reach scale was supplemented by morphological measurements. The results demonstrate that a discharge of approximately 10 m3/s enables significant transport of suspended sediments (SS), whereas a discharge of 15 m3/s enables significant sand transport. The results provide operational information on silt and sand transport applicable to other small rivers. This study represents an important contribution to the relatively sparse existing body of literature regarding the effects of water releases and sediment state. The presence of F-specific RNA phages (FRNAPH) in stream waters indicate faecalpollution, and its occurrence and propagation constitute a major public health issue.FRNAPH are considered as water colloids, they can be transported in suspension, attached tosuspended sediment particles and flocs, or be deposed in the channel bed. For instance,several studies have shown a higher persistence of viruses in sediment than in the watercolumn. However, the exchanges between water and sediment are not well understood, andfurther studies are needed in catchment with varying physiographical characteristics andanthropogenic disturbances. Accordingly, whereas laboratory experiments have shown thattemperature and sunlight are among the most important factors responsible for the virusinactivation, we still lack a general understanding on how the virus are transported, itsdynamics and persistence under natural conditions. Here, we present a 2-years dataset(2015-2017) of weekly FRNAPH concentrations in the Orne River (northeastern France),which drains around 1,270 km2 and flows into the Moselle River. Our underlyinghypothesis is that the fate and transport of FRNAPH might be explained by catchmenthydrologic processes, suspended sediment transport and meteorological variables. Wehypothesize that if we are able to decipher the controlling factors, we might better predictconcentration downstream of the faecal sources and better understand the relationshipbetween FRNAPH and suspended sediment dynamics. We collected stream watersamples weekly at two sampling sites, upstream and downstream a wastewatertreatment plant, and quantified FRNAPH concentrations using infectivity assays. Inparallel, we measured hydrological and meteorological parameters, including watertemperature, conductivity, turbidity, flow rate, suspended sediment concentration, solarradiation, rainfall and air temperature. We also investigated the occurrence of FRNAPHon suspended sediment particles. Our results showed a higher concentration ofFRNAPH at the upstream site (Haropré), what might be associated to faecal pollutionpoint sources. A seasonal variability on phage concentrations was only observedat the downstream site (Beth), what could be associated with water temperatureannual fluctuations. Correlations between FRNAPH and suspended solids werenon-significant, indicating a low implication of suspended sediment transport on the phagetransport and settling in our study site. The shoreface is an important transitional zone between the beach and the inner shelf. Significant change on the shoreface occurs at long temporal time scales and over large spatial domains, making its study challenging. The shoreface's contribution to nearshore dynamics is also usually complex, acting as both a sediment source and a sediment sink, as well as facilitating or impeding sediment transport. To date, no universal agreement exists for the definition of the shoreface nor its exact spatial extent.When considering the longer term and larger-scale evolution of coastal systems, the morphodynamics of the shoreface appears to be a determining factor in coastal and shoreline evolution. Along high-energy coastal areas, for instance western Ireland and North-western France, dominated by geomorphological features such as embayments, pocket beaches, sea cliffs and rock outcrops, the geological background plays a major role in the control of the coastal morphodynamics. This geological control acts to limit accommodation space, sediment availability and longshore sediment transport thus helping constrain the shape of the shoreface and therefore its dynamics and evolution.The study of shoreface morphodynamics requires the combination of multiple datasets at variable temporal and spatial scales. In this study, the west coast of Ireland provides spatially extensive bathymetry (multi-beam) datasets to allow the study of shoreface morphology and extent. Furthermore, the existence of wave data from offshore buoys and reanalysis wave models, also allows the analysis of hydrodynamic behaviour (using SWAN modelling) and the identification of the seaward shoreface limit. Along the Northern coast of France, bathymetric surveys were carried out since the early 19th century, and were stored in the French Hydrographic Service (Shom) archives. These hydrographic field sheets were made for mapping the seabed of the coastal zone where tidal sand banks are common, forming linear shore-parallel or slightly oblique massive sand bodies. Digitization of these historical records was undertaken in the course of this study, enabling to assess changes in sand bank morphology and position. Our analyses of bathymetry changes show significant morphological variations across the shoreface since the 19th century, which are largely due to sand bank mobility. Alongshore migration and elongation of sand banks can be related to tidal asymmetry directed to the east-north-east. Shore-perpendicular movement can be related to the action of storm waves that can be responsible for onshore-directed sediment transport. One of the objectives of this study is to attempt to relate the observed changes in coastal and nearshore morphology with possible changes in hydrodynamic processes. A simulation of tidal circulation and of wave propagation over bathymetry grids based on historical bathymetric soundings will enable to compare coastal hydrodynamics during distinct time periods and assess their possible effects on nearshore morphology change. In the last two centuries, many areas have undergone a rather fast demographic, industrial andurban development. This intense land occupancy affected the quality of surface waters, whichbecome the receptacle of anthropogenic effluents from various origins. In this context, severalrivers in North-Eastern France were strongly modified (rectification of river bed, dambuilding) and received high amounts of industrial and domestic effluents due to paststeel-making activities installed nearby water resources. As a consequence of these pasteffluent inputs in the river, and although part of the settled material was dredged andremoved from the riverbeds, these often remain contaminated. During flood events, theremobilization of these riverbed sediments can strongly impact water and evensoil quality. In this context, there is consequently a clear need for predicting thepotential resuspension and transport of sediment in these heavily polluted riversystems. Hydromorphodynamic models are powerful tools for predicting the potential mobilizationand transport of sediment in river ecosystems. Recent studies even showed that they are ableto predict suspended sediment matter concentration in small river systems satisfyingly.However, modelling exercises often neglect suspended sediment properties (e.g.particle site distribution and density), even though such properties are known todirectly control the sediment particle dynamics in the water column during floodevents. This study has two objectives. On the one hand, it aims to further develop an existinghydromorphodynamic model based on the dynamic coupling of TELEMAC-3D (v7p1) andSISYPHE (v7p1) in order to enable an enhanced parameterization of the sediment grain-sizeand density distributions. On the other hand, it evaluates and discusses the added-value of thenew development for improving sediment transport and riverbed evolution predictions. Tothis end, we evaluate the sensitivity of the model to the parameterization of sedimentgrain-size distribution, sediment density and suspended sediment concentration at theupstream boundary. As a test case, the model is used to simulate a flood event in asmall-scale river, the Orne River in north-eastern France. The results show substantialdiscrepancies in bathymetry evolution depending on the model setup. Moreover,the sediment model based on an enhanced sediment grain-size distribution (10classes) and with distributed sediment density outperforms the model with only twosediment grain-size classes in terms of simulated suspended sediment concentration. In the classic Wilson plate-tectonic cycle, plate convergence and orogenesis follow plate divergence. This results in an asymmetric doubly vergent collisional orogen with pro- and retro-wedge/foreland basin systems (lower and upper plate, respectively). Conceptual models propose that an orogen evolves as a single dynamic system from an early, non-equilibrated, growth stage to a late, mature, steady-state stage. Yet, early convergence processes and mechanisms responsible for the transition from rift to collision are, as yet, little known and quantified. In particular, most of our understanding of wedge/foreland dynamics comes from the pro-wedge, where mainly late orogenesis is well preserved. In contrast, the retro-foreland basin is believed to preserve the full orogen history due to lower shortening and translation values. This is the case in the NE Pyrenean retro-wedge, where recent studies suggest that during early orogenesis the Pyrenees never reached a steady-state configuration.Our work aims to constrain the timing and rates of orogenic episodes as well as timescales for sediment transport from source to sink in the Eastern Pyrenees. We apply coordinated U-Pb and (U-Th)/He dating methods on detrital zircon to ten samples through the syn-orogenic Upper Cretaceous to Eocene succession. We use the recently developed in situ double dating approach to address firstly, a two-fold shortcoming in quantifying syn-orogenic denudation and secondly, an issue with recognising the signature of early Pyrenean convergence in source-to-sink processes. Firstly, most previous regional exhumation studies have focused on reconstructing thermal histories for currently exposed bedrock, which has led to sparse constraints on the initiation and early phase of convergence. Moreover, regional detrital double dating has until recent years been performed either on distinct batches of grains or statistically non-representative numbers of grains or samples. Secondly, in the Pyrenees, the delay between the end of rifting (and associated HT metamorphism, early Cenomanian) and the onset of convergence (end Santonian) is short, leading to difficulties in recognising a clear thermal signature of early orogenesis.Our results show that lag times (the difference between the age of apparent cooling and deposition, assuming instantaneous transport) sharply decrease during the Maastrichtian, passing from >50 Myrs to <20 Myrs. This indicates a significant increase in denudation rates. Around this time we also note a marked increase in the proportion of Early Cretaceous rifting and Hercynian source signals, indicating a change in source area(s) and/or progressive unroofing of thermally reset rifted Pyrenean crust. All these changes are recorded over <2 Myrs and are synchronous with changes in paleo-current directions. We interpret these results as recording the sedimentary response to the onset of Pyrenean orogenesis. Our data suggest that the early orogen and the Early Cretaceous rift extended further east, in an area which has since been destroyed by the Oligo-Miocene opening of the Gulf of Lion. Our work clarifies early growth in the Pyrenees, providing new evidence for dynamic coupling between range and foreland basin(s), and contributing to the debate on the role of rift inheritance into early orogenic processes.
