Buttressed trees provide mechanical support for themselves and offer essential ecological functions, such as nutrient acquisition, while being one of the largest sources of volume or biomass estimation variation in tropical forests. In this study, we collected 51 buttressed trees from (33) Democratic Republic of Congo, (12) Indonesia, and (6) Costa Rica, including (48) point clouds, and (3) destructive measurement. Specifically, we compared the performance of the Alpha Shape Algorithm (ASA) and the Slice Triangulation (ST) method on buttress volume estimation based on 30 point clouds with two species. Six point clouds from Costa Rica were used to validate the 3D surface reconstruction method. Meanwhile, we developed three allometric models based on 36 point clouds: a diameter above the buttress-based (DAB, 39 to 203 cm) model, a diameter computed from the non-convex area (D area130) model, and the convex hull perimeter (D convex130) of the breast height model. The developed models were validated with independent data, including (6) point clouds and (3) destructive measurements, to highlight the broader contextualization and application of these methods. Volume estimated by the ASA and ST showed a high agreement with the reference volume acquired using the Smalian formula (relative RMSE of 0.07 and 0.11, respectively, regardless of species effect). ASA was also robust when modeling trees with more and shallower horizontal buttresses. D area130 was the most accurate predictor to estimate buttress volume, with a lower Akaike information criterion (−66.25) than DAB (−59.55) and D convex130 (30.56); however, DAB and D area130 (relative RMSE of 0.21 and 0.23, respectively) showed similar performance when validated with independent datasets. Our results indicate that the ASA approach performs better than both the ST and allometric models used in this study. Furthermore, the ASA method can help correct the bias in the present and past estimates of volume and biomass of large trees, which are foundational components for understanding biomass allocation and dynamics in tropical forests contemporary fields. • The alpha shape and slice triangulation methods show similar performance on buttress volume estimation. • The alpha shape algorithm overestimates volume when the tree presents more and shallower horizontal buttresses. • Concerning allometric models, D area130 is the most robust predictor to estimate buttress volume. • The 3D surface reconstruction methods outperform traditional allometric models to estimate buttress volume. We evaluated the intention, implementation, and impact of Costa Rica's program of payments for environmental services (PSA), which was established in the late 1990s. Payments are given to private landowners who own land in forest areas in recognition of the ecosystem services their land provides. To characterize the distribution of PSA in Costa Rica, we combined remote sensing with geographic information system databases and then used econometrics to explore the impacts of payments on deforestation. Payments were distributed broadly across ecological and socioeconomic gradients, but the 1997–2000 deforestation rate was not significantly lower in areas that received payments. Other successful Costa Rican conservation policies, including those prior to the PSA program, may explain the current reduction in deforestation rates. The PSA program is a major advance in the global institutionalization of ecosystem investments because few, if any, other countries have such a conservation history and because much can be learned from Costa Rica's experiences. The article presents a study that examines the bird fauna in an agricultural landscape in southern Costa Rica. The avifauna of eight forest fragments and 13 open-habitat sites in the agricultural landscape has been surveyed. The study aims to compare the composition of the avifauna found in forest-fragment and open habitats of the countryside, assess the faunal change that has occurred since deforestation, and provide a baseline for future comparisons.

Abstract:We compared deforestation rates and the extent of fragmentation inside and outside protected areas in the Sarapiquí region of Costa Rica. We determined deforestation rates using remotely sensed images with supervised classification. We georeferenced the processed images and then transformed them to vector format for final mapping and parameter quantification. The deforestation rate in protected areas was low and declined sharply from 0.56% annually between 1976 and 1986 to 0.16% from 1991 to 1995. Outside the protected areas, the rate decreased from 3.6% in 1976–1986 to 2.8% in 1986–1991, but it increased again to 3.2% in 1991–1995. Fragmentation outside the protected areas increased considerably: the number of patches increased from 537 in 1976 to 1231 in 1996, while during the same period the average size of patches decreased from 0.95 to 0.25 km2. Forest landscapes in the Sarapiquí region are likely to lose considerable biodiversity because of the past forest loss and fragmentation even without further increases in deforestation and fragmentation. As the Earth warms, many species are likely to disappear, often because of changing disease dynamics. Here we show that a recent mass extinction associated with pathogen outbreaks is tied to global warming. Seventeen years ago, in the mountains of Costa Rica, the Monteverde harlequin frog (Atelopus sp.) vanished along with the golden toad (Bufo periglenes). An estimated 67% of the 110 or so species of Atelopus, which are endemic to the American tropics, have met the same fate, and a pathogenic chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) is implicated. Analysing the timing of losses in relation to changes in sea surface and air temperatures, we conclude with 'very high confidence' (> 99%, following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC) that large-scale warming is a key factor in the disappearances. We propose that temperatures at many highland localities are shifting towards the growth optimum of Batrachochytrium, thus encouraging outbreaks. With climate change promoting infectious disease and eroding biodiversity, the urgency of reducing greenhouse-gas concentrations is now undeniable.
