In this study, we systematically examined the importance of human rights standards and principles for rights-based pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) provision for marginalized adolescents. Nested within a demonstration study of PrEP provision to adolescent men who have sex with men, travestis, and transgender women, we carried out interviews in São Paulo, Brazil with 25 adolescents, eight health providers, and six workers involved in community-based demand creation. Analysis focused on participants' narratives about aspects of human rights within service delivery, including the availability, accessibility, acceptability, and quality of services; informed decision-making; nondiscrimination; and privacy and confidentiality. Clients and service providers highlighted the importance of availing a range of services beyond PrEP and described how community outreach and social media helped promote accessibility. Acceptability centered around clients feeling heard and respected. Health workers appreciated having time to build trusting relationships with clients to ensure quality of care and support informed decision-making. Nondiscrimination was valued by all, including using clients' chosen pronouns. Privacy and confidentiality were primary concerns for clients who were not "out" about their sexuality or PrEP use; to mitigate this, health workers sought to accommodate clients' preferred channels of communication. The aim of the present study was to investigate the communication/training strategies and technological tools used by fitness coaches from Brazilian football teams during home-based training according to age categories (professional and youth), competitive level (1st, 2nd and 3rd/4th divisions) and sex (male and female). An online questionnaire was applied to collect data. Eighty-two fitness coaches from sixty-seven male and female football teams (professional and youth teams) answered the questionnaire. Message apps were the main communication route between fitness coaches and players during home-based training. Online spreadsheets were frequently used to control the training. Regarding equipment provided to players for training, 70.7% of male professional players used some equipment. In contrast, most female professional and youth players (both sexes) did not receive any equipment, respectively (p<0.01). Male players who compete in the 1st and 2nd divisions received more equipment for training than those who compete in the 3rd and 4th divisions (p<0.01). The main physical fitness variables trained by all players during home-based training were muscle strength, strength-endurance, and aerobic capacity. Training load and training response were applied through series/repetitions/time and effort perception scales, respectively. In conclusion, the financial differences between professional and youth teams and between males and females and competitive levels can induce different home-based training conditions in Brazilian football teams during lockdown-like situations, especially related to equipment available for training targeted physical qualities. The missionaries of the Society of Jesus emerged as significant social and political agents in the Colony, allowing the presence of the crown to be felt. As these men took on the responsibility for the health care of the colony's inhabitants, this enabled the Order to build a significant body of knowledge, the restricted circulation of which among its members conferred political importance upon them in the Portuguese Court. Communication, in this context, is positioned as a tool for gathering power in the face of situations experienced by the missionaries, due to its political dimension. What does the incessant return of the Brazilian national team jersey between June 2013 and the government of Jair Bolsonaro mean? What is its role? What does football have to do with Brazil's public life in the early 21st century? Does its intervention in the recent political and social history of the country limit itself to the appearance of the national team jersey and its appropriation by extreme-right movements and parties? These are some of the questions that this article seeks to answer. To do so, the analysis mobilizes the theoretical-methodological framework of Greimas' discursive semiotics and Jurij Lotman's semiotics of culture, combining micro analyses of specific texts, practices, and discourses with macro analyses of broader and transversal sociocultural configurations, revealing the links between the semiospheres of football, politics, media, and religion. Vocalization is the main form of communication in many animals, including frogs, which commonly emit advertisement calls to attract females and maintain spacing. In noisy environments such as streams, mechanisms to maximize signaling efficiency may include vocal plasticity and/or movement of individuals to quieter sections, but which strategy is used is still uncertain. We investigated the influence of stream geophony on the advertisement call of the torrent frog Hylodes perere in the Atlantic Rainforest, in southeastern Brazil. In a mark-recapture study, we tested if males remain in their territories and thus adjust their advertisement calls to maximize their communication. We ran linear mixed models to verify the relationship of call parameters and stream geophony, body size, and environmental temperature. We found that males remained in the same location across time, increased call intensity in noisier environments, but did not reduce call effort. Males also increased the dominant frequency in these situations, suggesting a modulation in this parameter. Our results indicate that territoriality is an important factor for males to increase call intensity to surpass stream noise instead of repositioning along the stream. However, because call effort was maintained, we suggest that sexual selection is crucial in this system, favoring males that better detect others and adjust their call efficiency. This is the first study to evaluate simultaneously frog movements and adaptations to geophony, which contributes to the investigation of the concomitant environmental and sexual selective pressures in species that communicate in noisy environments. Background: Most health systems are insufficiently prepared to promote the participation of chronically ill patients in their care. Strong primary health care (PHC) strengthens patients' resources and thus promotes their participation. The tasks of providing continuous care to people with chronic diseases and promoting self‐management are the responsibility of PHC nurses. Recent research assessing enablers of or barriers to nurses' efforts to support patients' participation has mostly not considered the special situation of patients with chronic diseases or focused on the PHC setting. Objective: To investigate enablers of and barriers to PHC nurses' efforts to promote the participation of chronically ill patients in their care. Methods: We interviewed 34 practicing PHC nurses and 23 key informants with advanced knowledge of PHC nursing practice in Brazil, Germany and Spain. The data was analyzed using thematic coding. Results: We identified four categories of barriers and enablers. (1) Establishing bonds with patients: Interviewees emphasized that understanding patients' views and behaviours is important for PHC nurses. (2) Cooperation with relatives and families: Good relationships with families are fundamental, however conflicts within families could challenge PHC nurses efforts to strengthen participation. (3) Communication and cooperation within PHC teams: PHC nurses see Cooperative team structures as a potential enabler, while the dominance of a 'biomedical' approach to patient care is seen as a barrier. (4) Work environment: Interviewees agreed that increased workload is a barrier to patient participation. Discussion and Conclusions: Supporting patient participation should be acknowledged as an important responsibility for nurses by general practitioners and PHC planners. PHC nurses should be trained in communicative competence when discussing participation with chronically ill patients. Interprofessional education could strengthen other professionals' understanding of patient participation as a nursing task. Aim. To explore the managerial competencies engaged in innovative actions among Brazilian nurses working in primary health care. Background. The mobilization of managerial competencies favors environments that are in transformation. There is a lack of studies that recognize the managerial skills which influence the implementation of innovative actions in PHC. Method. A qualitative exploratory descriptive approach was developed in the PHC of a municipality in Brazil. A total of 76 nurses who worked in management and care participated with a semistructured script being applied on innovative actions implemented in the service. The data were processed in IraMuTeQ 0.7 and later analyzed by descending hierarchical classification. Results. The managerial competencies that influenced the development of innovative actions implemented were as follows: communication and teamwork in planning innovative actions, continuing education for application and implementation, and leadership and people management. Conclusions. Managerial competencies were used as strategies by nurses to implement innovative actions and contribute to engagement and generating positive results, emphasizing autonomy and the role of nurses as agents of change. Implications for Nursing Management. This study aimed to know the care provided by the family member to the child admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). This is a descriptive and exploratory research with a qualitative approach, developed in a PICU of a hospital in the south of Rio Grande do Sul / Brazil. Fifteen family caregivers participated. The collection took place between December 2017 and January 2018, through a semistructured interview that occurred after the approval of the Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel), under the opinion n 2,416,925. The data were interpreted according to the thematic content analysis. Two categories were elaborated: Care provided by family members within a PICU; Relationship established by the health team of the PICU with the family caregiver and the child. The family offers the child a care based on love, affection and warmth, exposed when performing actions such as changing diapers, assisting in bathing and dressing. Likewise, the care received by the family members by the health team proved to be important to facilitate the process of adaptation to the situation lived and the continuity of the care of the family member to the child. In this sense, it can be seen that health professionals, especially nursing, may be conducting a therapeutic listening in their daily care, with a view to effective communication in which both speak the same language, valuing the meanings and meanings attributed by the family to this experience. The objective of the article is to understand how CLOC, Via Campesina and ALBA Movements are articulated as popular apparatuses of hegemony and act in their struggles providing engagement with the common from Latin America. We discuss the role of community and popular communication in the construction of popular hegemony and analyze how these popular organizations used their digital platforms to organize their speeches, their struggles and contribute to the formation of public opinion. Methodologically, we carried out a nonsystematic and empirical exploratory bibliographical research through the observation of digital platforms of the selected organizations and documental analysis of texts from the three organizations that signal their understandings about the common and political crises in Brazil and Peru. During the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, COVID-19 healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and risk management became major challenges facing hospitals. Using evidence from a research project, this commentary presents: 1) various communication and information strategies implemented by four hospitals and their staff in Brazil, Canada and France to reduce the risks of COVID-19 HAIs, and how they were perceived by hospital staff; 2) the flaws in communication in the hospitals; and 3) a proposed agenda for research on and action to improve institutional communications for future pandemics. By analyzing "top-down" strategies at the organizational level and spontaneous strategies initiated by and between professionals, this study shows that during the first waves of the pandemic, reliable information and clear communication about guidelines and health protocols' changes can help alleviate fears among staff and avoid misapplication of protocols, thereby reducing infection risks. There was a lack of a "bottom-up" communication channel, while, when making decisions, it is crucial to listen to and fully take into account staff's voices, experiences, and feelings. More balanced communication between hospital administrators and staff could strengthen team cohesion and lead to better enforcement of protocols, which in turn will reduce the risk of contamination, alleviate the potential impacts on staff health, and improve the quality of care provided to patients. Introduction: This article analyzes experiences of antibiotic use and bacterial infections among Primary Health Care users of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and the possible implications for antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The aim is to map aspects that shape users' lay knowledge regarding antibiotics use and AMR. Methods: This is an exploratory study, which consists primarily of individual in‐depth interviews with 19 respondents. Recurrent interview topics were coded and analysed according to thematic content analysis. Results: Our findings show users' lived experiences constitute three dimensions related to users' previous antibiotic use: (1) lay knowledge about medicines; (2) previous bacterial infections and (3) communication during the consultation. Lay knowledge encompasses the users' understanding of how antibiotics work in comparison to other drugs and experimentations they make with medication. Users' narratives about bacterial infections are divided into situations of urinary tract infections and antibiotic treatments for other conditions. Communication during the consultation is mainly characterized by a lack of shared knowledge and trust in the doctor–patient relationship. Discussion: Users bring together knowledge learned from their own experiences to create the rationale, which shapes how they understand antibiotic use, bacterial infections and medical advice. These experiences are interwoven with information received from healthcare professionals (HPs) on these topics, creating a scenario that goes beyond professional information about antibiotic use. Users have knowledge about medication, antibiotics use and bacterial infection but do not have room to share it with HP, allowing lived experiences to take precedence over professional information. Conclusion: Users ascribe symbolic meanings to antibiotics creating a lay knowledge frame, even if this knowledge is not scientifically correct. The personal experiences of bacterial infections and their treatment are also an important source of knowledge about antibiotic use and AMR among users. Users demand from their HPs both trust and willingness to listen to their health narratives and experiences. By considering lay knowledge as part of the assessment of a user's health condition, rather than dismissing it as erroneous and therefore unworthy of attention, HPs may enhance the compliance of users. Primary Care patients were invited to participate as respondents of in‐depth interviews, which were carried out by the first author at a Primary Care Unit (PCU) in the suburb of Campo Limpo, Southern region of São Paulo, Brazil. Patients were interviewed after reading and signing a Free and Informed Consent Form, holding with them a copy of the Form. Among the final activities of the project, a feedback session at the same PCU is planned to report on the results of the study. Objective: to describe the therapeutic itinerary of children/adolescents with cancer and their families. Method: qualitative descriptive study carried out with 11 mothers and one grandmother of children/adolescents undergoing cancer treatment, guided by the theoretical framework of the Health Care Systems Model. Data were collected from March to September 2019, through semi-structured and audio-recorded interviews, submitted to Morse and Field content analysis. Results: for the family, the path taken throughout the process of searching for diagnosis and cure was characterized by suffering and ambiguous feelings. Throughout the therapeutic itinerary, each family established their way of acting, perceiving, communicating, relating and making decisions. Final considerations: knowing the therapeutic itinerary of families of children/adolescents with cancer can guide assertive nursing interventions and support the development of strategies that improve the early diagnosis of the disease, favoring a better prognosis. Objective: to understand the perspective of nurses on the transitional care of the person with chronic noncommunicable disease from hospital to home. Method: qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study. The study scenario was a University Hospital in southern Brazil. Data collection occurred through semi-structured interviews with 28 nurses and managers, between July 2018 to May 2019, in which the analyses were made by the themes. Results: The nurses point out some strategies of transition of the care, as the inclusion of the caregiver in the orientations and the telephone contact. They also indicate the need for recognition of the health network by professionals and the challenge of articulation between different services. Final considerations: the transitional care goes beyond the reductionist logic of simple individualized orientation to hospital discharge. The nurse can lead the change and promote the consolidation of safe and qualified practices, due to its insertion in the various scenarios of health care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: We aimed to evaluate how breaking bad news training was implemented in neurology residency programs in Brazil and to assess the perception and preparedness of trainees and program directors. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional descriptive study. Neurology trainees and program directors were recruited from the Brazilian Academy of Neurology registry through convenience sampling. Participants answered a survey evaluating the breaking bad news training at their institution and their preparedness and perception towards the topic. Results: We collected 172 responses from 47 neurology institutions from all five socio-demographic regions of Brazil. More than 77% of trainees were dissatisfied with their breaking bad news training, and around 92% of program directors believed their programs required substantial improvement. Approximately 31% of neurology trainees reported never having a lecture about communicating bad news, 66% reported never having a simulated training, and nearly 61% never received feedback regarding their communication abilities. Moreover, 59% of program directors acknowledged that feedback was not a standard practice and nearly 32% reported the absence of any specific training. Conclusion: This study suggested that the breaking bad news training in neurology residencies across Brazil is deficient and highlighted challenges to achieve this core competency. Program directors and trainees recognized the importance of the topic, and program directors acknowledged that many factors hinder the ability to implement formal training. Given the relevance of such a skill to patient care, every effort should be made to provide structured training opportunities during residency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to investigate whether total need satisfaction and three separate basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence and relatedness) predict life skills development in dual-career athletes according to sex, type of sport, type of higher education institution and financial support. Participants included 136 Brazilian university athletes (65 boys and 71 girls) aged 17-23. Data collection was conducted via Basic Needs Satisfaction in Sport Scale (BNSSS) and the Life Skills Scale for Sport (LSSS). Bayesian multilevel linear regression model found that total need satisfaction and three separate basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence and relatedness) influenced life skills (teamwork, social skills, leadership, goal setting and communication) and total life skills development in dual-career athletes. Total need satisfaction influenced leadership and total life skills. Competence and relatedness influenced goal seating, social skill, leadership and total life skills. Autonomy might not have a strong correlation with life skills development dimensions standardised scores and total life skills standardised score independent of sex, type of sport, type of higher education institution and financial support. Based on such findings, satisfaction of all three basic needs combined (total need satisfaction) and separate autonomy, competence and relatedness was positively associated with the development of life skills in dual-career athletes. Objective: to evaluate nursing professionals and patient safety culture during the professional performance in the care of suspected or infected patients with COVID-19. Method: a cross-sectional study carried out with 90 professionals from critical care units of two teaching hospitals. An instrument for sociodemographic characterization and health conditions was used, in addition to the constructs "Nursing professional and patient safety" and the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture. Univariate analyzes were performed between the diagnosis of COVID-19 and the characteristics of Nursing professionals, applying Kendell's correlation between the constructs. Results: the COVID-19 diagnosis presented a significant statistical difference between nursing professionals that worked for more than six years at the critical care unit (p=0.020) and the items of the construct "Nursing professional and patient safety" regarding the doubts about how to remove the personal protective equipment (p=0.013) and safety flow (p=0,021). The dimensions 2 (p=0.003), 3 (p=0.009), 4 (p=0.013), 6 (p<0.001), and 9 (p=0.024) of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture were associated with the accomplishment of training. Conclusion: a higher professional nursing experience time was associated with non-infection by COVID-19. Objective: to create, validate and evaluate an educational video on nurse-patient communication strategies for undergraduate Nursing students. Method: this is a methodological study with a longitudinal design and quantitative analysis. The following stages were conducted: pre-production, production, post-production and evaluation of the video by the target population. Results: five female nurses evaluated the video storyboard and indicated understanding of the subject matter, the topics addressed and the language used as adequate and pertinent to the theme. Another five female nurses considered the following as present and desirable elements: quality of the audiovisual technique employed, simulated environment, characterization of the characters, and development of the nurse-patient communication strategies The final version of the video was evaluated by nine Nursing students that presented a level of item understanding of at least 96%. The video presents the following strategies: General communication strategies, Intercultural Communication, NURSE, Tell me more, Ask-Tell-Ask, Therapeutic Communication and Communicating Bad News. Conclusion: this study portrays the creation of a video, its validation by experts and its evaluation by the target population, which indicated it as a relevant educational resource for the teaching-learning process regarding communication strategies. Objective: to assess the job satisfaction of nursing professionals who worked in care and management during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: cross-sectional epidemiological study, with the participation of 334 nursing professionals of a teaching hospital. Absolute and relative frequencies of qualitative variables and means of numerical variables were calculated. The mean scores of the domains of the Job Satisfaction Survey were compared with sociodemographic-labor variables. Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney test, and ANOVA test were applied and followed by Tukey, Kruskal-Wallis, or Dunn's post-test to verify the statistical significance of the results with a critical level of 0.05. Results: 90 professionals were satisfied with their work, three professionals were dissatisfied and 241 professionals were ambivalent. Conclusion: ambivalence was evidenced among nursing workers regarding their job satisfaction during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings indicate a path for managers and health policymakers to invest in career plans and work environments that improve the working conditions of nursing workers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
