After almost 20 years from the first Berlin Declaration, the end of 2018 saw a new impulse in open access to publications (and not only) with the launch of Plan S by the Coalition S and with the announcement of the launch of "European Open Science Cloud". The two events are part of a new scenario that sees, in particular, publishers strongly urged by academic and government institutions to take the definitive step towards a true Open Science. After the transition from paper to electronic, everyone is called to a new challenge: to find one (or more) economically sustainable models that are no longer based on the subscription model but on that of publications. Due to the increase in the frequency and intensity of natural disasters such as heavy rainfall events, the evaluation of the vulnerability of the built environment is becoming increasingly important. Evaluation techniques for each separate building often require detailed geometric models of the supporting structures and time-consuming simulations. One possibility to overcome this problem is to categorize the buildings in a first step and use representative building models for each category. This paper presents a semi-automated approach for categorizing buildings and creating parametric models for the respective building categories. Using these models, the buildings of a category can be collectively examined for their vulnerability to various impacts. First, this paper introduces open geodata that can be used for this process. For the categorization of the buildings, the collected data is further processed to extract additional information such as building age classes or floor plan geometries of the buildings. This results in a data set, with the help of which the buildings can be categorized. However, information about the load-bearing structure is often missing in the different data sources. By including information on typical construction methods that are associated with the previously determined characteristics (age, floor plan geometry, usage), representative models can be created for individual building categories. In this study, the approach was tested in a selected reference area in Berlin. The results indicate that the presented approach is a promising first step towards deriving geometrical models from open geodata that can be used to evaluate the vulnerability of buildings. Accessible and high-quality urban green space (UGS) can provide significant benefits to refugee children for their development, health, and well-being. However, few studies have examined the actual accessibility of UGS from refugee children's perspectives (i.e., with restricted walking radius, particular vulnerability towards barriers such as traffic infrastructures and disconnected road forms) and related them with other environmental or social burdens under the context of environmental justice. It is necessary to explore related evidence and investigate the underlying causes since refugee facilities are primarily located in areas with restricted social and environmental resources strongly related to attributes of environmental justice. This paper investigated (1) availability, accessibility, and attractiveness of UGS in 30 refugee accommodation locations in Berlin using GIS and Space Syntax, (2) environmental burdens using the Berlin Atlas of Environmental Justice, and (3) neighbourhood characteristics. Findings indicate that 63% of refugee accommodations have availability of green space that is above average official standards, but from refugee children's perspectives, 60% of the locations have limited access to UGS, lower attractive green spaces, and most locations face multi-environmental burdens. Currently, little guidance focuses on ensuring equal access to and the usability of UGS for specific socioeconomic and demographic groups, such as refugee children. Therefore, this paper has contributed empirical materials to begin such research and develop inclusive decision-making strategies in environmental and health policy to ensure the provision and high quality of UGS for refugee children who need it. The paper examines local and global logistics involved in the transfer of animals to and from zoos in the twentieth century. The key contexts discussed here are, on the one hand, the relationship between the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (Museum of Natural History) and Berlin Zoo, and on the other hand, trade in and the market of exotic animals, a market that both exceeds and constitutes the institutions of the museum and the zoo. Taking the accidental death of a giant tortoise in the zoo in 1969 as its starting point, the paper studies the movement of animals, dead and alive. It traces the acquisition history of two new Galápagos giant tortoises by following the animals' trajectory from Ecuador to West Berlin during the Cold War. At the same time, it reconstructs the itineraries of the dead animals' remains through different natural history institutions, leading into the shared history of trade and traffic between zoos and natural history museums and into the political geographies of the Cold War. To put these episodes into a broader historical context, the article looks back on the expansion of global networks in animal trade through the lens of transport infrastructures, trading networks, and the accompanying red tape, tracing this back to the period around 1900 in order to reveal genealogies, thereby historicizing current logistical practices, policies, and problems. Taking logistics as a critical analytical category for natural history and thus examining natural history as logistics allows us to gain new insights into how logistics not only enabled but also shaped and reshaped natural history's material, economic, and epistemic frameworks. Five portable Bruker EM27/SUN FTIR spectrometers have been used for the accurate and precise observation of column averaged abundances of CO2 and CH4 around the megacity Berlin. In the first part of this work (Frey et al., 2015) we have presented the various measures that were undertaken to ensure that the observations are consistent between sites, accurate and precise. Here, we present the recorded time series of XCH4 and XCO2 and demonstrate that the CO2 emissions of Berlin can be clearly identified in the observations. A simple dispersion model is applied which indicates a total strength of the Berlin source of about 0.8 t CO2 s-1. In the Supplement of this work, we provide the measured dataset and auxiliary data. We hope that the model community will exploit this unique dataset for state-of-the art inversion studies of CO2 and CH4 sources in the Berlin area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper showcases an integrated workflow hinged on passive airborne multi-modal sensor data for the simulation of the thermal behavior of built-up areas with a focus on urban heat islands. The geometry of the underlying parametrized model, or digital twin, is derived from high-resolution nadir and oblique RGB, near-infrared and thermal infrared imagery. The captured bitmaps get photogrammetrically processed into comprehensive surface models, terrain, dense 3D point clouds and true-ortho mosaics. Building geometries are reconstructed from the projected point sets with procedures presupposing outlining, analysis of roof and fac¸ade details, triangulation, and texturing mapping. For thermal simulation, the composition of the ground is determined using supervised machine learning based on a modified multi-modal DeepLab v3+ architecture. Vegetation is retrieved as individual trees and larger tree regions to be added to the meshed terrain. Building materials are assigned from the available visual, infrared and surface planarity information as well as publicly available references. With actual weather data, surface temperatures can be calculated for any period of time by evaluating conductive, convective, radiative and emissive energy fluxes for triangular layers congruent to the faces of the modeled scene. Results on a sample dataset of the Moabit district in Berlin, Germany, showed the ability of the simulator to output surface temperatures of relatively large datasets efficiently. Compared to the thermal infrared images, several insufficiencies in terms of data and model caused occasional deviations between measured and simulated temperatures. Several low resolution spectrometers were used to investigate the CO2 and CH4 emissions of the megacity Berlin. Before and after the campaign the instruments were tested side-by-side. An excellent level of agreement and stability was found between the different spectrometers: the drifts in XCO2 and XCH4 are within 0.005 and 0.035%, respectively. The instrumental line shape characteristics of all spectrometers were found to be close to nominal. Cross-calibration factors for XCH4 and XCO2 were established for each spectrometer. An empirical airmass correction factor has been applied. As a last calibration step, using a co-located TCCON spectrometer as a reference, a common factor has been derived for the low-resolution campaign spectrometers, which ensures that the records are compatible to the WMO in-situ scale. Finally as a first result of the Berlin campaign we show the excellent agreement of ground pressure values obtained from total column measurements and in situ records. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to underline the specificities of Theodor Fontane's work Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg as a place of remembrance – and subsequently of the places of remembrance it contains – as well as the importance that this very comprehensive text has until today for the cultural space of Berlin-Brandenburg. The paper highlights a dynamic of cultural memory that ranges from overlaying places of remembrance to the emergence of new ones. This article represents the first paper in a two-part series dealing with safety during tram–pedestrian collisions. This research is dedicated to the safety of trams for pedestrians during collisions and is motivated by the increased number of lethal cases. The first part of this paper includes an overview of tram face development from the earliest designs to the current ones in use and, at the same time, provides a synopsis and explanation of the technical context, including a link to current and forthcoming legislation. The historical design development can be characterised by three steps, from an almost vertical front face, to leaned and pointed shapes, to the current inclined low-edged windshield without a protruding coupler. However, since most major manufacturers now export their products worldwide and customisation is only of a technically insignificant nature, our conclusions are generalisable (supported by the example of Berlin). The most advantageous shape of the tram's front, minimising the effects on pedestrians in all collision phases, has evolved rather spontaneously and was unprompted, and it is now being built into the European Commission regulations. The goal of the second part of this paper is to conduct a series of tram–pedestrian collisions with a focus on the frontal and side impacts using a crash test dummy (anthropomorphic test device—ATD). Four tram types approaching the collision at four different impact speeds (5 km/h, 10 km/h, 15 km/h, and 20 km/h) were used. The primary outcome variable was the resultant head acceleration. The risk and severity of possible head injuries were assessed using the head injury criterion (HIC15) and its linkage to the injury level on the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS). The results showed increasing head impacts with an increasing speed for all tram types and collision scenarios. Higher values of head acceleration were reached during the frontal impact (17–124 g) compared to the side one (2–84 g). The HIC15 values did not exceed the value of 300 for any experimental setting, and the probability of AIS4+ injuries did not exceed 10%. The outcomes of tram–pedestrian collisions can be influenced by the ATD's position and orientation, the impact speed and front-end design of trams, and the site of initial contact. To enable the deployment of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) as passenger cars in the private transport sector, suitable charging infrastructure is crucial. In this paper, a methodology for the efficient spatial distribution of charging infrastructure is evaluated by investigating a scenario with a 100% market penetration of BEVs of (around 1.3 million vehicles) in Berlin, Germany. The goal of the evaluated methodology is the development of various charging infrastructure scenarios—including public and private charging—which are suitable to cover the entire charging demand. Therefore, these scenarios are investigated in detail with a focus on the number of public charging points, their spatial distributions, the available charging power, and the necessary capital costs. For the creation of these charging infrastructure scenarios, a placement model is developed. As input, it uses the data of a multi-agent transport simulation (MATSim) scenario of the metropolitan area of Berlin to evaluate and optimize different distributions of charging infrastructure. The model uses a genetic algorithm and the principle of multi-objective optimization. The capital costs of the charging points and the mean detour car drivers must undertake are used as the optimization criteria. Using these criteria, we expect to generate cost-efficient infrastructure solutions that provide high usability at the same time. The main advantage of the method selected is that multiple optimal solutions with different characteristics can be found, and suitable solutions can be selected by subsequently using other criteria. Besides the generated charging scenarios for Berlin, the main goal of this paper is to provide a valid methodology, which is able to use the output data of an agent-based, microscopic transport simulation of an arbitrary city or area (or even real driving data) and calculate different suitable charging infrastructure scenarios regarding the different optimization criteria. This paper shows a possible application of this method and provides suggestions to improve the significance of the results in future works. The optimized charging infrastructure solutions for the Berlin scenario show capital costs of between EUR 624 and 2950 million. Users must cover an additional mean detour of 254 m to 590 m per charging process to reach an available charging point. According to the results, a suitable ratio between the charging points and vehicles is between 11:1 and 5:1. A share of fast charging infrastructure (>50 kW) of less than ten percent seems to be sufficient if it is situated at the main traffic routes and highly frequented places. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the classification and identification of surface materials on earth have emerged as fundamental yet challenging research topics in the fields of geoscience and remote sensing (RS). The classification of multi-modality RS data still poses certain challenges, despite the notable advancements achieved by deep learning technology in RS image classification. In this work, a deep learning architecture based on convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed for the classification of multimodal RS image data. The network structure introduces a cross modality reconstruction (CMR) module in the multi-modality feature fusion stage, called CMR-Net. In other words, CMR-Net is based on CNN network structure. In the feature fusion stage, a plug-and-play module for cross-modal fusion reconstruction is designed to compactly integrate features extracted from multiple modalities of remote sensing data, enabling effective information exchange and feature integration. In addition, to validate the proposed scheme, extensive experiments were conducted on two multi-modality RS datasets, namely the Houston2013 dataset consisting of hyperspectral (HS) and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data, as well as the Berlin dataset comprising HS and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed CMR-Net compared to several state-of-the-art methods for multi-modality RS data classification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To tackle the global waste crisis, there is an urgent need for decisive and joint action at multiple levels. The collective behavior of a community could make a significant contribution. This paper presents the results of a field experiment designed to promote packaging waste prevention -- called precycling -- in a newly formed community setting, in Berlin, Germany. The aim was to examine the effect of the intervention on precycling and to examine the underlying social identity processes. Over a four-week period, 132 participants from 96 different households digitally received a combination of different interventions, that were theoretically informed by the Social Identity Model of Pro-Environmental Action (SIMPEA). Households were assigned to two intervention groups and a waiting control group. Data was collected before, immediately after and four months after the intervention to assess the impact of the intervention using multilevel models. After the intervention, the overall precycling behavior increased significantly, but not as a result of the different group conditions. In the more comprehensive intervention group, which included social interaction and behavioral experimentation, the community identification was strengthened and the reuse behavior, as a subset of precycling, increased. While a number of social identity processes (collective efficacy beliefs, having a precycling action goal, crisis appraisal, and sufficiency attitudes) were found to positively predict the precycling behavior, surprisingly, the predictive power of social norms and ingroup identification could not be confirmed. Overall, the presented community intervention promoted precycling. However, in this dynamic realworld setting, not all intervention elements worked as expected. The pitfalls and opportunities of this intervention are discussed, and ideas for translating the results into everyday precycling activities are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Speech emotion recognition (SER) has gained significant attention due to its several application fields, such as mental health, education, and human-computer interaction. However, the accuracy of SER systems is hindered by high-dimensional feature sets that may contain irrelevant and redundant information. To overcome this challenge, this study proposes an iterative feature boosting approach for SER that emphasizes feature relevance and explainability to enhance machine learning model performance. Our approach involves meticulous feature selection and analysis to build efficient SER systems. In addressing our main problem through model explainability, we employ a feature evaluation loop with Shapley values to iteratively refine feature sets. This process strikes a balance between model performance and transparency, which enables a comprehensive understanding of the model's predictions. The proposed approach offers several advantages, including the identification and removal of irrelevant and redundant features, leading to a more effective model. Additionally, it promotes explainability, facilitating comprehension of the model's predictions and the identification of crucial features for emotion determination. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated on the SER benchmarks Toronto emotional speech set (TESS), Berlin Database of Emotional Speech (EMO-DB), Ryerson Audio-Visual Database of Emotional Speech and Song (RAVDESS), and Surrey Audio-Visual Expressed Emotion (SAVEE) dataset, outperforming state-of-the-art methods. These results highlight the potential of the proposed technique in developing accurate and explainable SER systems. In 2020, anti-Asian racism re-emerged during the coronavirus pandemic in Germany and elsewhere, manifesting in media narratives, and evoking different forms of violence and exclusion, especially in public space. Racialisation as an everyday process creates "counter-frames" by racialised groups. They are constructed in relation to institutionalised interpellation as "the other." Building on Feagin's concept of "white framing" and "counter-framing" and Löw's concept of space, this paper discusses the effects of racialisation, coping and anti-racist resistance strategies as developed by the Asian diaspora. Social change regarding racism will be analysed through Foroutan's concept of "postmigrant society." We based this study on a convenience sample of people with Asian heritage which we conducted in 2020 in Germany. In addition, we included a diary study for which a subset has been sampled. We argue that the pandemic influenced the formation of counter-frames against anti-Asian racism in the specific context of Berlin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the incorporation of formerly existing built environment and natural elements was studied in eight housing estates from the interwar period in the Weimar Republic as a part of broader research on landscape transformations. The data on the original state of land development were collected using the comparative cartographic analysis method. The analysis was supplemented by a comparison with iconography, such as aerial photographs, orthoimagery, and, in some cases, manually drafted plans. The results suggest that pre-existing conditions significantly influenced the functional dispositions and urban layout of the estates. These findings add to our understanding of the development of housing estates of the interwar period in the Weimar Republic and the posture of designers and urban planners towards the natural conditions of the respective project sites. Programmatic considerations for an incorporation of punctuation into GFL teaching conclude the chapter; hope is they will resonate with the relevant communities and practitioners (also beyond the Germanophone world) as many of them can be generalized to teaching punctuation both to L2 and - arguably - L1 writers. Ström Herold & Levin analyze (in English) German, English, and Swedish non-fiction books from the 2000's - both originals and translations - in striving to rectify that punctuation (or the actual practices of using it) is usually but a footnote in translation studies. The main question, which is preliminarily answered through the analysis of comma usage in five term papers written by German L1 writers, is "whether prefields trigger non-standard commas at their right edge just because they are prefields" (p. 99). The paper reviews Circles UBI as an illustrative case study of implementing the idea of universal basic income (UBI) on blockchain. Circles was born out of the Gnosis Chain as a more democratic alternative to Bitcoin coupled with the ambitious political project of algorithmically distributing UBI. Backed by the Gnosis Chain, Circles Coop was founded in 2020 to implement this idea in Berlin. Examining the failure of the Berlin pilot helps us draw substantial conclusions with regard to the implementation of UBI on blockchain. UBI alone, on blockchain or not, is not enough to solve the problems its proponents argue against. UBI would be helpful as a tool if plugged into a model of production embedded into a political strategy aiming to fix key problems of current societies such as gaping inequalities and climate change. We give a snapshot here of the model of open cooperativism as a counterhegemonic political project vis-à-vis neoliberalism. Circles UBI could plug into the model of open cooperativism as a distribution and liquidity injection mechanism to foster the transition towards a commons-based ethical and sustainable post-capitalist economy. This paper examines the phenomenon of residential segregation in Berlin over time using a dynamic clustering analysis approach. Previous research has examined the phenomenon of residential segregation in Berlin at a high spatial and temporal aggregation and statically, i.e. not over time. We propose a methodology to investigate the existence of clusters of residential areas according to migration background, age group, gender, and socio-economic dimension over time. To this end, we have developed a sequential mixed methods approach that includes a multivariate kernel density estimation technique to estimate the density of subpopulations and a dynamic cluster analysis to discover spatial patterns of residential segregation over time (2009-2020). The dynamic analysis shows the emergence of clusters on the dimensions of migration background, age group, gender and socio-economic variables. We also identified a structural change in 2015, resulting in a new cluster in Berlin that reflects the changing distribution of subpopulations with a particular migratory background. Finally, we discuss the findings of this study with previous research and suggest possibilities for policy applications and future research using a dynamic clustering approach for analyzing changes in residential segregation at the city level. The rapid advancement of genetic technologies has made it possible to modify various plants through both genetic transformation and gene editing techniques. Poplar, with its rapid in vitro growth and regeneration enabling high rates of micropropagation, has emerged as a model system for the genetic transformation of woody plants. In this study, Populus × berolinensis K. Koch. (Berlin poplar) was chosen as the model organism due to its narrow leaves and spindle-shaped crown, which make it highly suitable for in vitro manipulations. Various protocols for the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of poplar species have been developed to date. However, the genetic transformation procedures are often constrained by the complexity of the nutrient media used for plant regeneration and growth, which could potentially be simplified. Our study presents a cheaper, simplified, and relatively fast protocol for the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of Berlin poplar. The protocol involved using internode sections without axillary buds as explants, which were co-cultivated in 10 µL droplets of bacterial suspension directly on the surface of a solid agar-based medium without rinsing and sterile paper drying after inoculation. We used only one regeneration Murashige and Skoogbased medium supplemented with BA (0.2 mg·L−1), TDZ (0.02 mg·L−1), and NAA (0.01 mg·L−1). Acetosyringone was not used as an induction agent for vir genes during the genetic transformation. Applying our protocol and using the binary plasmid pBI121 carrying the nptII selective and uidA reporter genes, we obtained the six transgenic lines of poplar. Transgenesis was confirmed through a PCR-based screening of kanamycin-selected regenerants for the presence of both mentioned genes, Sanger sequencing, and tests for detecting the maintained activity of both genes. Realistic simulation of dynamic interaction between plants and different natural environmental factors is a key topic in the field of natural landscape simulation. At present, few researches focus on the accumulation of snow on plants and the simulation of the dynamic deformation of a branch under the influence of the accumulation of snow. Therefore, we propose a simulation method for the dynamic interaction between snowfall and plants based on physical models. We first analyze the structure of the target plant and establish its physical structure model. Then we use the particle system and the plant branch collision detection method to calculate the amount of snow accumulation on the branches and generate the fluctuating snow grid surface based on the Berlin noise function. Finally, the cantilever beam model is used to calculate the deformation of branches under snow pressure. This modeling method proposed in this paper can provide a new research idea and technical reference for simulating the dynamic interaction between plants and environmental factors represented by snow. Real-world labs (Rwls) are often used to explore and foster the mobility transition. Many RwLs dealing with mobility transition temporarily reallocate public spaces from motorized to active transport or to leisure activities. While some residents accept and enjoy the changes, others react with scepticism, rejection, or protest. This can lead to confiicts. Controversial perceptions and conflicts among residents make a permanent redesign rather challenging for the administration and the politicians. In this paper the authors investigate the relatedconflict types and counterarguments by studying the case of a temporary redesign of an intersection in Berlin. Based on in-depth interviews, they untangle procedural, distributional, and identity conflicts which might underlie the critical and ambivalent perceptions of residents. An abundance of confiict issues pertaining to procedural and distributional conflicts are revealed and emphasize the role of the RwL process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, general practitioners (GPs) continued to be a main point of contact for patients. For GP practices, it was and still is a challenge to meet constantly changing requirements due to the various phases of the pandemic. The aim of the study is to explore retrospectively the subjective experience with supply and utilization of health care services from the perspective of general practitioners, medical practice assistants and patients, in particular regarding instances of underutilization of services for non-Covid related conditions, adjustments due to the pandemic, and the appropriateness of care. Methods: The study is carried out within the RESPoNsE research practice network in three of Germany's federal states: Berlin, Brandenburg, and Thuringia (RESPoNsE—Research practice network east). The study follows a convergent mixed method design, and consists of the following sections: a) two anonymous paper-based questionnaires filled out by GPs and medical practice assistants (MPAs), at an interval of 12 to 18 months; b) in-depth qualitative interviews conducted among a subgroup of GPs and MPAs; c) anonymous paper-based questionnaires among patients of participating practices. The idea for the study was derived from discussions with the practice advisory board of the RESPoNsE network. The themes and issues to be explored in the surveys and interviews are developed and discussed in the practice advisory board, the patient advisory board, and with interested MPAs. The questionnaires will be analyzed descriptively, exploring the effect of demographic variables. Qualitative content analysis is used to analyze the data from the interviews and focus groups. Discussion: The study focuses on the conditions of GP care during the COVID-19 pandemic. A broad insight is provided as GPs and MPAs, as well as patients, are involved. It provides the opportunity to express needs and concerns. The results can support future discussions on lessons learned from the pandemic and necessary changes in health care delivery. The paper deals with Thomas Hettche's novel Pfaueninsel, which is interpreted as a story about the Other. The category of otherness refers to the main character, Marie Strakon, a dwarf in the service of the King of Prussia in the 19th century, and to the place of action, Peacock Island near Berlin. Hettche's historiographical metafiction is a fictional biography of a woman whose physical otherness places her in opposition to the orders established by humans: social, cultural, aesthetic, and historical. Peacock Island, in turn, transformed into an artificial paradise, is a heterotopic sphere of otherness contrasting with Berlin, an urban space of civilisation, progress, and the Industrial Revolution. The story of the Peacock Island biotope illustrates the emergence and evolution of ecological consciousness in the 19th century; it constitutes a motif of non-anthropocentric history being "the Other" of the 'great' history of humans. This paper describes the work of Clara Ehrenberg (1838–1915), especially her engagement in the curation of one of the most scientifically important early microbiological/micropalaeontological collections in the world, now located at the Museum für Naturkunde zu Berlin. Her meticulous work with very fragile microscopic slides, as well as accomplishments in the field of curation and taxonomy, and her detailed observations and fine drawings, are acknowledged here. Furthermore, it is shown how Clara, in her autobiography, drew attention to her family and to her father's (C. G. Ehrenberg, 1795–1876) life, which was embedded in the Berlin university realm of the time. The descriptions in her memoirs are by far more wide reaching than just personal. Clara Ehrenberg was a close observer of the constantly changing world, a process which accelerated dramatically in the rapidly expanding city of Berlin and had, due to nineteenth century industrial inventions and progress, an impact on the daily lives of her family and her contemporaries with consequences lasting to our own time. The Open Balkan is the latest regional initiative in the Western Balkans (WB), firstly named as Mini-Schengen and then changed to Open Balkan Initiative (OBI), which aims to increase the regional economic cooperation among the WBs by going beyond the mere objective of creating a Common Regional Market (CRM). This paper using an analytical approach, taking into account data and information, has identified and highlighted the openly declared objectives of the OBI while comparing it with the previous Berlin Process. Also, the paper has shown that the disputes among the WB countries most inherited from the unresolved issues of the past are still present and hinder the progress towards a common future and EU membership perspective. The reactions to the OBI proved that even the creation of mere economic cooperation is hardly achieved in the case of other existing unresolved issues of the past and continues to remain open. This paper has highlighted the existence of mistrust among the WBs, the importance of increasing regional cooperation, and the role that the EU should inevitably play. The article discusses the study of Ulli Eichman and colleagues of Max Born Institute in Berlin, Germany on the acceleration of neutral atoms using a strong laser pulse. It notes that Eichman and colleagues have used helium atoms in their experiment because of its atomic featherweight that can easily be push around with strong forces, and reveals that it has survived the strong laser. It mentions that its survival was because of the ability of helium's electron to oscillate near its ionic core.

Identity-based hash proof system (IB-HPS), a variant of hash proof system (HPS) in the identity-based setting, is a useful building block in cryptography. In EUROCRYPT 2010 (Alwen et al in Advances in cryptology-EUROCRYPT 2010, volume 6110 of LNCS, Springer, Berlin, pp. 113–134, 2010), Alwen et al. demonstrated that IB-HPS almost immediately yields an identity-based encryption (IBE) scheme that is secure against partial leakage of the target identity's decryption key. In FOCS 2010 (Dodis et al in FOCS 2010, IEEE, pp. 511–520, 2010), Dodis et al. further pointed out that a cryptographic system with continuous leakage-resilience can be obtained from a bounded leakage resilient scheme by performing an additional key update algorithm, subject to some conditions. Therefore, to create a generic construction of IBE schemes with continuous leakage resilience, one can use an improved IB-HPS, called updatable IB-HPS (U-IB-HPS), which has a key update algorithm to embed some fresh randomness into the user's private key. Moreover, identity-based hash proof system with two encapsulation keys (T-IB-HPS) was also proposed. And it can be used to create chosen-ciphertext attacks secure encryption scheme with high computational efficiency. However, most of the existing IB-HPS constructions suffer some restrictions: they either do not have the adaptive security or rely on some non-static security assumptions. After analyzing the existing methods used in creating IBE schemes, we found that it is difficult to design an IB-HPS with adaptive security from classic static assumptions. In this paper, the generic constructions of IB-HPS, U-IB-HPS and T-IB-HPS with adaptive security are created respectively from any standard (updatable) IBE scheme. The security of proposed system is proved based on the semantic security of the underlying (updatable) IBE scheme. These new constructions of leakage-resilient cryptosystems can achieve provable security even if the attacker learns some arbitrary partial information about their internal secret key. While there are many previous works constructing such leakage-resilient cryptosystems under concrete number-theoretic and algebraic assumptions, this work presents the cryptography primitives under general and minimal assumptions. In electric buses, heating, ventilation and air conditioning are responsible for up to 50% of the energy consumption. It is therefore necessary to identify improved thermal settings to minimize the energy consumption, while guaranteeing good thermal comfort. Hence, an accurate prediction of the passengers' thermal sensation (TS) is needed. One of the most widely used models for TS prediction is the PMV-PPD model, which has been shown to provide reliable results in uniform, steady-state climatic conditions. Since these are not present in an urban bus, the accuracy of the PMV-PPD model diminishes. Additionally, some of the parameters needed are difficult to obtain (i.e., clothing insulation). This paper presents seven different machine learning models (ML) for the prediction of TS using three different sets of parameters. The first set comprises five parameters similar to the PMV-PPD model, the second uses only two, and the third uses all parameters available. To obtain the necessary data, climatic measurements in an electric bus in Berlin, Germany, were made. These measurements were performed in summer for ambient temperatures between 14.7 °C and 32.0 °C. Person-related information as well as the thermal comfort assessment were obtained via surveys. Despite the relatively small data set, four of our seven ML models performed well with a median accuracy between 70.3% and 69.4%. This could also be observed when using only two parameters. Hence, the efforts to gain experimental data can be reduced significantly. For the PMV-PPD model, a median shift of +1 was observed for mild and warm TS. This paper aims to identify the weaknesses of didactic praxis in the field of teaching foreign languages for specific purposes (LSP) and propose more effective approaches that take into consideration both the learner profile and the conditions in which learners acquire a language as a tool in their job, training or education. Based on the example of the teaching of German for medical purposes in the target country to highly qualified healthcare staff that have immigrated for professional reasons, we recapitulate the didactic/methodological principles of the Berlin Didactics, draw upon a critique of the CEFR and, on this basis, we theoretically demonstrate specific implementation strategies for a usagebased model of the teaching of languages for specific purposes that can realistically be incorporated in the curricula of LSP courses, independent of the target language. The first strategy concerns a data-driven approach to the teaching of languages for specific purposes by making use of (parallel) language corpora in the classroom. The second is the design of a dual teaching model, based on Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development and promotes peer learning, while combining traditional LSP lessons and practical technical language training. The third proposed strategy concerns the role of mediation in the teaching of LSP. The paper concludes with a discussion of the benefits and limitations of the three didactic strategies that serves as a starting point for the design of relevant LSP policies, curricula and resources. The animal‐centric approach so far predominantly employed in risk assessment has been questioned in recent years due to a number of shortcomings regarding performance, consistency, transferability of results, sustainability, costs and ethical reasons. Alternatives to animal testing, collectively termed NAMs, may have the potential to deliver sound, cost‐effective, prompt and reliable information, but their regulatory acceptance has not been established yet. The main reasons behind this are mostly related to actual methodological obstacles, with particular reference to addressing complex endpoints such as repeated‐dose toxicity, the issue of translating the concept of adversity to NAMs, and doubts of stakeholders about the level of chemical safety ensured by NAMs. With the aim of providing an updated view on major conceptual and methodological developments in the field of toxicology, a symposium and a workshop were organised by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung, BfR) and Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research on 15–17 November 2021 in Berlin. The conference, entitled 'Challenges in Public Health Protection in the 21st Century: New Methods, Omics and Novel Concepts in Toxicology' brought together eminent scientists with representatives from industry and regulatory authorities. The organisation, day‐to‐day operations and the reporting of the event main outcomes in a position paper were the main focus of the present EFSA EU‐FORA work programme. Tasks pertaining to 'The use of NAMs and omics data in risk assessment' were implemented under the shared supervision of units 'Testing and Assessment Strategies Pesticides' and 'Effect‐based Analytics and Toxicogenomics' of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment. In this paper, we do research on cross-corpus speech emotion recognition (SER), in which the training and testing speech signals come from different speech corpus. The mismatched feature distribution between the training and testing sets makes many classical algorithms unable to achieve better results. To deal with this issue, a transfer learning and multi-loss dynamic adjustment (TLMLDA) algorithm is initiatively proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm first builds a novel deep network model based on a deep auto-encoder and fully connected layers to improve the representation ability of features. Subsequently, global domain and subdomain adaptive algorithms are jointly adopted to implement features transfer. Finally, dynamic weighting factors are constructed to adjust the contribution of different loss functions to prevent optimization offset of model training, which effectively improve the generalization ability of the whole system. The results of simulation experiments on Berlin, eNTERFACE, and CASIA speech corpora show that the proposed algorithm can achieve excellent recognition results, and it is competitive with most of the state-of-the-art algorithms. There is confusion over the place and date of publication of a paper by J. C. Klotzsch in which 17 nomenclatural novelties in the Rubiaceae were proposed including five new generic names. The paper was presented to the Königlich Preussische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin in August 1853 and appeared in the Akademie's journal. At least three German periodicals published in 1853 reported on Klotzsch's paper in association with the Bericht über die zur Bekanntmachung geeigneten Verhandlungen der Königlich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, indicating that the journal was published on a monthly basis and that the August issue was available on 19 September 1853 at the latest. Citation of an issue of the journal Flora from 7 December 1853 as the place of publication of these Klotzsch names should therefore be corrected. This paper elaborates an aspirations–capabilities framework to advance our understanding of human mobility as an intrinsic part of broader processes of social change. In order to achieve a more meaningful understanding of agency and structure in migration processes, this framework conceptualises migration as a function of aspirations and capabilities to migrate within given sets of perceived geographical opportunity structures. It distinguishes between the instrumental (means-to-an-end) and intrinsic (directly wellbeing-affecting) dimensions of human mobility. This yields a vision in which moving and staying are seen as complementary manifestations of migratory agency and in which human mobility is defined as people's capability to choose where to live, including the option to stay, rather than as the act of moving or migrating itself. Drawing on Berlin's concepts of positive and negative liberty (as manifestations of the widely varying structural conditions under which migration occurs) this paper conceptualises how macro-structural change shapes people's migratory aspirations and capabilities. The resulting framework helps to understand the complex and often counter-intuitive ways in which processes of social transformation and 'development' shape patterns of migration and enable us to integrate the analysis of almost all forms of migratory mobility within one meta-conceptual framework. Rationale: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a major global health concern with a significant unmet need. EXO-CD24 is delivered via inhalation-reduced cytokines and chemokine secretion and lung injury in ARDS and improved survival in mice models of ARDS, influenza, and sepsis. Objectives: This clinical paper aims to evaluate the potential of EXO-CD24, a novel immunomodulatory treatment, in the compassionate care of critically ill, intubated patients with post-infection-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Methods: Eleven critically ill patients diagnosed with post-infection ARDS (10 with COVID-19 and one with an adenovirus-associated infection) were administered EXO-CD24 in four medical centers across Israel. The patients had multiple co-morbidities, including cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and ischemic heart disease, and met the criteria for severe ARDS according to the Berlin classification. EXO-CD24 was administered via inhalation, and adverse events related to its use were carefully monitored. Measurements and Main Results: The administration of EXO-CD24 did not result in any recorded adverse events. The median hospitalization duration was 11.5 days, and the overall mortality rate was 36%. Notably, patients treated at the Tel Aviv Medical Center (TASMC) showed a lower mortality rate of 12.5%. The WBC and CRP levels decreased in comparison to baseline levels at hospitalization, and rapid responses occurred even in patients with kidney transplants who were off the ventilator within a few days and discharged shortly thereafter. The production of cytokines and chemokines was significantly suppressed in all patients, including those who died. Among the patients at TASMC, four had kidney transplants and were on immunosuppressive drugs, and all of them fully recovered and were discharged from the hospital. Conclusions: EXO-CD24 holds promise as a potential therapeutic agent for all stages of ARDS, even in severe intubated cases. Importantly, EXO-CD24 demonstrated a favorable safety profile without any apparent side effects with promising efficacy. Furthermore, the potential of EXO-CD24 as a platform for addressing hyper-inflammatory states warrants exploration. Is it possible to discover the critical realist foundations of Gestalt theory in Berlin comparative musicology (vergleichende Kunstwissenschaft) associated above all with Erich M. von Hornbostel? The balance of natural science explanation and phenomenal experience is a useful model for overcoming Eurocentrism in comparative ethnomusicology, relying both on third-person tools and indigenous music systems. This paper uses Gestalt critical realist epistemology and methodology and a portrayal of the strata making up the understanding of a musical act with chemico-physical, phenomenal and cultural components to create an "amphibian" ethnomusicology. Using this framework it is possible to understand Hornbostel and Sachs' musical instrument classification system and Hornbostel's account of "primitive" music as strata in a Gestalt explanatory system. Gardens in cities have been the focus of a wider public health debate in Europe's polluted and dense cities, for the elderly and considering the current COVID‐19 pandemic. Many cities report rising demand for allotment gardens by people from all age groups including young couples and families.This study aims at quantitatively examining the bundle of ecosystem services provided by allotment gardens in Berlin, Germany. It assesses the values related to those ecosystem services' benefits for gardeners and the wider urban public and compares perceptions of the social–environmental value of allotment gardens by gardeners and non‐gardeners.We also compare the frequency of garden visits and the perception of gardens as a crucial element of the urban ecosystem by men and women. We carried out a web‐based survey, additionally a part of the questionnaires was handed out in paper form for respondents who did not have internet access.The resulting sample of 466 gardeners and 80 non‐gardeners shows that urban allotment gardens play an important role in food production, biodiversity conservation, but also social–environmental interactions. The variety of environmental management practices, such as installation of artificial nests for insects, sowing of special flower mixtures, leaving areas with wild vegetation, use of organic fertilizers, including crop residues, shows that most respondents among gardeners are aware of the methods aimed at maintaining biodiversity and soil fertility in their allotment. The sample's analysis further states that benefits are not only perceived by gardeners but also by non‐gardeners.We discuss our findings against the background of the savings and sustainable enhancement of ecosystem services benefits that are created by allotment gardens for all. Old manuscripts are cultural products of the ancestors of modern Indonesians and contain highly valuable cultural information. As such, they were sought after by other nations, who have managed to acquire them in various ways, including by taking them, bartering them with other items or buying them. It is thus no wonder that a lot of Indonesian manuscripts are now housed in various institutions in other countries, including the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (STABI) in Germany. This article aims to describe the Indonesian manuscripts that are now housed in STABI and to trace how they ended up there, with a particular focus on the physical condition of the manuscripts using the codicological approach. As the research shows, the Indonesian manuscripts housed in STABI are from various regions, including Java, the Batak lands, Aceh, Bima, Lampung and Makassar, and in the Malay language used all over Southeast Asia. The manuscripts date from the 15th century onwards, and they were acquired as a result of purchase or as gifts from certain institutions or individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ambient noise tomography on the basis of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) deployed on existing telecommunication networks provides an opportunity to image the urban subsurface at regional scales and high-resolution. This capability has important implications in the assessment of the urban subsurface's potential for sustainable and safe utilization, such as geothermal development. However, extracting coherent seismic signals from the DAS ambient wavefield in urban environments at low cost remains a challenge. One obstacle is the presence of complex sources of noise in urban environments, which may not be homogeneously distributed. Consequently, long recordings are required for the calculation of high-quality virtual shot gathers, which necessitates significant time and computational cost. In this paper, we present the analysis of 15 d of DAS data recorded on a pre-existing fibre optic cable (dark fibres), running along an 11-km-long major road in urban Berlin (Germany), hosting heavy traffic including vehicles and trains. To retrieve virtual shot gathers, we apply interferometric analysis based on the cross-correlation approach where we exclude low-quality virtual shot gathers to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the stacked gathers. Moreover, we modify the conventional ambient noise interferometry workflow by incorporating a coherence-based enhancement approach designed for wavefield data recorded with large-N arrays. We then conduct multichannel analysis of surface waves to retrieve 1-D velocity models for two exemplary fibre subsegments, and compare the results of the conventional and modified workflows. The resulting 1-D velocity models correspond well with available lithology information. The modified workflow yields improved dispersion spectra, particularly in the low-frequency band (<1 Hz) of the signal. This leads to an increased investigation depth along with lower uncertainties in the inversion result. Additionally, these improved results were achieved using significantly less data than required using conventional approaches, thus opening the opportunity for shortening required acquisition times and accordingly lowering costs. Modern on-demand mobility concepts have the potential to drive the mobility transition. Increasing attention is being paid to DRT (Demand Responsive Transportation) services that enable the bundling of trips with the help of dynamic routing algorithms. Many providers use a stop-based operating concept for this purpose. The transport between so-called virtual stops promises a higher fraction of shared trips and shorter vehicle detours. The aim of this paper is to investigate multiple stop network designs and their impacts on the efficiency of the operation. For this purpose, three stop network generation approaches were derived from literature and applied to the simulation environment MATSim. A scenario in the city center of Berlin is simulated, where all inner car trips are replaced by DRT. Comparing the stop network design against a door-to-door service, the results suggest a trade-off between a reduction of vehicle kilometers (up to 18%) and increased walking distances (up to 250 meters on average). Both mapping and artist documentary filmmaking offer us subjective translations of reality and strategies to relate to and represent space, sharing analogous methods of production that allow for a useful application of the spatial language of mapmaking to filmmaking. Immersing the film process within the language of mapmaking can then act as a bridge into the spatial practices of the gallery environment, curatorial practice, and exhibition design. This process is defined here as "film-mapping" and is investigated through the development of the work For the Record by Phanuel Antwi and Rhea Storr commissioned by the transmediale festival in Berlin (2021), for which the author of the present paper is the film curator. A process for film-mapping is laid out according to three stages: (1) Compose the Territory, (2) Define the Legend, and (3) Set the Modality. Understanding the production of For the Record through this mapping terminology enriches the spatial understanding of the work, providing a translation device between filmmaking and curatorial practice and mediating between the disciplines by providing a shared language. Emotion plays a dominant role in speech. The same utterance with different emotions can lead to a completely different meaning. The ability to perform various of emotion during speaking is also one of the typical characters of human. In this case, technology trends to develop advanced speech emotion classification algorithms in the demand of enhancing the interaction between computer and human beings. This paper proposes a speech emotion classification approach based on the paralinguistic and spectral features extraction. The Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) are extracted as spectral feature, and openSMILE is employed to extract the paralinguistic feature. The machine learning techniques multi-layer perceptron classifier and support vector machines are respectively applied into the extracted features for the classification of the speech emotions. We have conducted experiments on the Berlin database to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach. Experimental results show that the proposed approach achieves satisfied performances. Comparisons are conducted in clean condition and noisy condition respectively, and the results indicate better performance of the proposed scheme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the efforts to mitigate the ongoing humanitarian crisis at the European sea borders, this work builds detection capabilities to help find refugee boats in distress. For this paper, we collected dual-pol and quad-pol synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data over a 12 m rubber inflatable in a test-bed lake near Berlin, Germany. To consider a real scenario, we prepared the vessel so that its backscattering emulated that of a vessel fully occupied with people. Further, we collected SAR imagery over the ocean with different sea states, categorized by incidence angle and by polarization. These were used to emulate the conditions for a vessel located in ocean waters. This setup enabled us to test nine well-known vessel-detection systems (VDS), to explore the capabilities of new detection algorithms and to benchmark different combinations of detectors (detector fusion) with respect to different sensor and scene parameters (e.g., the polarization, wind speed, wind direction and boat orientation). The article discusses a study that examines the atmospheric effects that influence the radiance observed by a ground-based thermal-infrared (TIR) camera on a building in Berlin, Germany. The study shows how atmospheric correction of ground-based TIR imagery of the three-dimensional (3D) urban environment acquired in oblique viewing geometry has to account for spatial variability of line-of-sight (LOS) geometry. It also reveals the differences between uncorrected and corrected TIR imagery.
