The use of spectral data is seen as a fast and non-destructive method capable of monitoring pasture biomass. Although there is great potential in this technique, both end users and sensor manufacturers are uncertain about the necessary sensor specifications and achievable accuracies in an operational scenario. This study presents a straightforward parametric method able to accurately retrieve the hyperspectral signature of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) canopies from multispectral data collected within a two-year period in Australia and the Netherlands. The retrieved hyperspectral data were employed to generate optimal indices and continuum-removed spectral features available in the scientific literature. For performance comparison, both these simulated features and a set of currently employed vegetation indices, derived from the original band values, were used as inputs in a random forest algorithm and accuracies of both methods were compared. Our results have shown that both sets of features present similar accuracies (root mean square error (RMSE) ≈490 and 620 kg DM/ha) when assessed in cross-validation and spatial cross-validation, respectively. These results suggest that for pasture biomass retrieval solely from top-of-canopy reflectance (ranging from 550 to 790 nm), better performing methods do not rely on the use of hyperspectral or, yet, in a larger number of bands than those already available in current sensors.

Cheese is a nutritious dairy product and a valuable commodity. Internationally, cheddar cheese is produced and consumed in large quantities, and it is the main cheese variety that is exported from Australia. Despite its importance, the analytical methods to that are used to determine cheese quality rely on traditional approaches that require time, are invasive, and which involve potentially hazardous chemicals. In contrast, spectroscopic techniques can rapidly provide molecular information and are non-destructive, fast, and chemical-free methods. Combined with partner recognition methods (chemometrics), they can identify small changes in the composition or condition of cheeses. In this work, we combined FTIR and Raman spectroscopies with principal component analysis (PCA) to investigate the effects of aging in commercial cheddar cheeses. Changes in the amide I and II bands were the main spectral characteristics responsible for classifying commercial cheddar cheeses based on the ripening time and manufacturer using FTIR, and bands from lipids, including β'-polymorph of fat crystals, were more clearly determined through changes in the Raman spectra.

Calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) are essential for growth of sugarcane leaves and roots, as well as respiration and nitrogen metabolism, respectively. To assist farmers decide suitable application rates of lime and Mg fertiliser, respectively, the Australian sugarcane industry established the Six-Easy-Steps nutrient management guidelines based on topsoil (0-0.3 m) Ca (cmol(+) kg -1 ) and Mg (cmol(+) kg -1 ). Given the heterogeneous nature of soil, digital soil mapping (DSM) methods can be employed to allow for the precise application rate to be determined. In this study, we examine statistical models (i.e., ordinary kriging [OK], linear mixed model [LMM], quantile regression forests [QRF], support vector machine [SVM], and Cubist regression kriging [CubistRK]) to predict topsoil and subsoil (0.6-0.9) Ca and Mg, employing digital data in combination (i.e., proximal sensing electromagnetic induction (EMI) [e.g., 1mPcon, 1mHcon, etc.], gamma-ray [γ-ray] spectrometry [i.e., TC, K, U and Th] and digital elevation model [DEM] derivatives). We also investigate various sampling designs (i.e., spatial coverage [SCS], feature space coverage [FSCS], conditioned Latin hypercube [cLHS] and simple random sampling [SRS]) and calibration sample size (i.e., n = 180, 150, 120, 90, 60 and 30). The predictions are assessed using Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (LCCC) and ratio of performance to interquartile distance (RPIQ) with an independent validation dataset (i.e., n = 40). The best results were for prediction of subsoil Mg, utilising CubistRK (LCCC = 0.82) with the largest calibration sample size (n = 180), followed by LMM (0.79), SVM (0.76), QRF (0.70) and OK (0.65). This was generally the case for topsoil and subsoil Ca. We also conclude that no single sampling design was universally better, and 180 samples were necessary for predicting topsoil Ca and Mg with moderate agreement (0.65 < LCCC < 0.80). However, with FSCS, a minimum of 120 samples were enough to calibrate a CubistRK model and achieve substantial (LCCC > 0.80) agreement for predicting subsoil Ca and Mg. With respect to soil use and management according to the Six-Easy-Steps, the sandy soil in the north and south require large application rate of lime (3.5 t/ha) and Mg (125 kg/ha), respectively. The levels of trace elements in whole blood and plasma have been widely used for assessing nutritional status and monitoring exposure and can vary widely in populations from different geographical regions. In this study, whole blood samples ( n = 120) and plasma samples ( n = 120) were obtained from healthy donors attending the Red Cross Blood Bank (Queensland Red Cross Blood Service), which provided information for age and sex. There were 71 males (age range: 19-73 years) and 49 females (age range: 18-72 years) for whole blood samples, and 59 males (age range: 19-81 years) and 61 females (age range: 19-73 years) for plasma samples. The main aim of the study was to provide information on blood reference levels of 21 trace elements (Ag, Al, As, Bi, Br, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, I, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Tl, U, V, Zn) in Queensland. The study also aimed to assess differences in trace element blood levels between males and females and the effect of age. The trace element levels in blood samples were analysed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and the standard reference materials of Seronorm (Trace Elements Whole Blood) and UTAK (Trace Elements Serum) were used for quality control and assurance. The study found wide variations of trace element levels in whole blood and plasma, and generally the levels were comparable to other countries. No detectable levels were found for Bi, Cr, U and V in whole blood, but V levels were found in plasma samples. There were significant differences between males and females for whole blood Cu ( p < 0.001), I ( p = 0.009), Tl ( p = 0.016) and Zn ( p = 0.016). Significant differences were also found for plasma Cu ( p < 0.001) and Se ( p = 0.003) between males and females. There were trends of increased levels of blood Pb, Se and Zn with age. The study has provided further information on a wide range of trace elements in blood as reference levels for Queensland and Australia which are currently lacking.

Gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) radio sources are thought to be young objects which later evolve into Fanaro–Riley type I (FR I) and FR II radio galaxies. We have used the Australia Telescope 20 GHz (AT20G) survey catalogue to select a uniform sample of GPS sources with spectral peaks above 5 GHz, which should represent the youngest members of this class. In this paper, we present e-VLBI observations of 10 such objects which are associated with nearby galaxies and so represent a new population of local, low-power GPS sources. Our e-VLBI observations were carried out at 4.8 GHz with the Australia Telescope Long Baseline Array (LBA) using a real-time software correlator. All 10 sources were detected, and were unresolved on scales of ∼100 mas, implying that they are typically less than 100 pc in linear size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present 11 spectra from 12 candidate radio sources co-identified with known planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Originally found in Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) LMC surveys at 1.4, 4.8 and 8.64 GHz and confirmed by new high resolution ATCA images at 6 and 3 cm (400/200), these complement data recently presented for candidate radio PNe in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Their spectra were obtained using the Radclifie 1.9-meter telescope in Sutherland (South Africa). All of the optical PNe and radio candidates are within 200 and may represent a population of selected radio bright sample only. Nebular ionized masses of these objects are estimated to be as high as 1.8 Mʘ, supporting the idea that massive PNe progenitor central stars lose much of their mass in the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase or prior. We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 95 GHz to carry out continuum observations of 130 extragalactic radio sources selected from the Australia Telescope 20 GHz (AT20G) survey. We use a triple-correlation method to measure simultaneous 20- and 95-GHz flux densities for these objects, and over 90 per cent of our target sources are detected at 95 GHz. We demonstrate that the ATCA can robustly measure 95-GHz flux densities with an accuracy of ∼10 per cent in a few minutes for sources stronger than about 50 mJy. We measure the distribution of radio spectral indices in a flux-limited sample of extragalactic sources, and show that the median 20–95 GHz spectral index does not vary significantly with flux density for . This finding allows us to estimate the extragalactic radio source counts at 95 GHz by combining our observed 20–95 GHz spectral-index distribution with the accurate 20-GHz source counts measured in the AT20G survey. Our derived 95-GHz source counts at flux densities above 80 mJy are significantly lower than those found by several previous studies. The main reason is that most radio sources with flat or rising spectra in the frequency range 5–20 GHz show a spectral turnover between 20 and 95 GHz. As a result, there are fewer 95-GHz sources (by almost a factor of 2 at 0.1 Jy) than would be predicted on the basis of extrapolation from the source populations seen in lower-frequency surveys. We also derive the predicted confusion noise in cosmic microwave background surveys at 95 GHz and find a value 20–30 per cent lower than previous estimates. The 95-GHz source population at the flux levels probed by this study is dominated by quasi-stellar objects with a median redshift . We find a correlation between optical magnitude and 95-GHz flux density which suggests that many of the brightest 95-GHz sources may be relativistically beamed, with both the optical and millimetre continuum significantly brightened by Doppler boosting. The Australia Telescope 20-GHz (AT20G) Survey is a blind survey of the whole southern sky at 20 GHz (with follow-up observations at 4.8 and 8.6 GHz) carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array from 2004 to 2007. The Bright Source Sample (BSS) is a complete flux-limited subsample of the AT20G Survey catalogue comprising 320 extragalactic ) radio sources south of with Jy. Of these, 218 have near simultaneous observations at 8 and 5 GHz. In this paper we present an analysis of radio spectral properties in total intensity and polarization, size, optical identifications and redshift distribution of the BSS sources. The analysis of the spectral behaviour shows spectral curvature in most sources with spectral steepening that increases at higher frequencies (the median spectral index α, assuming , decreases from between 4.8 and 8.6 GHz to between 8.6 and 20 GHz), even if the sample is dominated by flat spectra sources (85 per cent of the sample has . The almost simultaneous spectra in total intensity and polarization allowed us a comparison of the polarized and total intensity spectra: polarized fraction slightly increases with frequency, but the shapes of the spectra have little correlation. We present results of polarization observations at 1.4 GHz of the two fields imaged by the DASI experiment ( and , respectively). Data were taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array with 3.4-arcmin resolution and ∼0.18-mJy beam−1 sensitivity. The emission is dominated by point sources, and we do not find evidence for diffuse synchrotron radiation even after source subtraction. This allows to estimate an upper limit of the diffuse polarized emission. The extrapolation to 30 GHz suggests that the synchrotron radiation is lower than the polarized signal measured by the DASI experiment by at least two orders of magnitude. This further supports the conclusions drawn by the DASI team itself about the negligible Galactic foreground contamination in their data set, improving by a factor of ∼5 the upper limit estimated by Leitch et al. The dominant point-source emission allows us to estimate the contamination of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) by extragalactic foregrounds. We computed the power spectrum of their contribution, and its extrapolation to 30 GHz provides a framework where the CMB signal should dominate. However, our results do not match the conclusions of the DASI team about the negligibility of point-source contamination, suggesting taking into account a source subtraction from the DASI data. Time variations of lightning activity in the three main tropical thunderstorm centers located in the Maritime Continent (Pakistan, India, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and Australia), Africa, and the Americas are analyzed using a lightning activity index IRS, which is calculated from the resonances of magnetic field in the extremely low frequency range—the Schumann resonances—which were observed at Hylaty station (Poland) in the time interval July 2005–May 2006. Power spectrum analysis of the IRS series is carried out for this time interval. The annual and semiannual variations are shown in all of the series together with the following characteristic periodicities: 45 (Madden–Julian oscillation), 17.6, 13.5, and 4.8 days, seen mainly in the series describing the lightning activity of the Maritime Continent. In addition, maps of the dynamical power spectrum are constructed. They present variability both in the values of characteristic periods 26–30, 17–22, 12–14, 9–10, and 5–7 days and in their duration. During the studied time interval, according to these indices, the African center was the most active, whereas the American and Maritime Continent centers showed a similar level of activity. This study focuses on methylamphetamine (MA) seizures made by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to investigate the use of chemical profiling in an intelligence perspective. Correlation coefficients were used to obtain a similarity degree between a population of linked samples and a population of unlinked samples. Although it was demonstrated that a general framework can be followed for the use of any forensic case data in an intelligence-led perspective, threshold values have to be re-evaluated for each type of illicit drug investigated. Unlike the results obtained in a previous study on 3,4-methylenedioxymethylamphetamine (MDMA) seizures, chemical profiles of MA samples coming from the same seizure showed relative inhomogeneity, limiting their ability to link seizures. Different hypotheses were investigated to obtain a better understanding of this inhomogeneity although no trend was observed. These findings raise an interesting discussion in regards to the homogeneity and representativeness of illicit drug seizures (for intelligence purposes). Two consecutive prefractionated fractions of the Australian marine sponge extract, Pipestela candelabra, were identified to be selectively active on the human prostate cancer cells (PC3) compared to the human neonatal foreskin fibroblast non-cancer cells (NFF). Twelve secondary metabolites were isolated in which four compounds are new small peptides. Their structures were characterized by spectroscopic and chemical analysis. These compounds inhibited selectively the growth of prostate cancer cells with IC50 values in the picomolar to sub-micromolar range. Structure-activity relationship of these compounds is discussed.

We report the first short term velocity centroid (VC) periodicity derived from SiO maser emission. L2 Puppis, a semi-regular AGB star, was observed using the Mopra radio telescope of the Australia Telescope National Facility in the SiO v = 1, J = 1-0 and v = 1, J = 2-1 transitions. It exhibits a 139 day period in its SiO maser VC based on a period folding analysis and a Lomb Scargle analysis. L2 Pup's SiO maser emission has an unusually large velocity range and an unusual three-peaked spectrum. To create the change in VC the entire spectrum does not shift in velocity, but changes in the relative emission of the peaks generate the variation. The changes in the VC may be due to differential illumination, an asymmetric circumstellar distribution of material, or a mixture of causes. The unusual velocity structure, similar to that observed in Orion source 1, may be due to revolution of the circumstellar material or asymmetries in the circumstellar environment. Context. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is rich in supernova remnants (SNRs), which can be investigated in detail with radio, optical, and X-ray observations. SNR-J0453-6829 is an X-ray and radio-bright remnant in the LMC, within which previous studies revealed the presence of a pulsar wind nebula (PWN), making it one of the most interesting SNRs in the Local Group of galaxies. Aims. We study the emission of SNR-J0453-6829 to improve our understanding of its morphology, spectrum, and thus the emission mechanisms in the shell and the PWN of the remnant. Methods. We obtained new radio data with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and analysed archival XMM-Newton observations of SNR-J0453-6829. We studied the morphology of SNR-J0453-6829 from radio, optical, and X-ray images and investigated the energy spectra in the different parts of the remnant. Results. Our radio results confirm that this LMC SNR hosts a typical PWN. The prominent central core of the PWN exhibits a radio spectral index αCore of −0.04 ± 0.04, while in the rest of the SNR shell the spectral slope is somewhat steeper with αShell = −0.43- ± -0.01. We detect regions with a mean polarisation of P ≅ (12 ± 4)% at 6 cm and (9 ± 2)% at 3 cm. The full remnant is of roughly circular shape with dimensions of (31 ± 1) pc- × (29 ± 1) pc. The spectral analysis of the XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS spectra allowed us to derive physical parameters for the SNR. Somewhat depending on the spectral model, we obtain for the remnant a shock temperature of around 0.2 keV and estimate the dynamical age to 12-000-15-000 years. Using a Sedov model we further derive an electron density in the X-ray emitting material of 1.56-cm-3, typical for LMC remnants, a large swept-up mass of 830 M⊙, and an explosion energy of 7.6 × 1050 erg. ABSTRACT We have mapped 20 spectral lines in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) around the Galactic Centre, emitting from 85.3 to 93.3 GHz. This work used the 22-m Mopra radio telescope in Australia, equipped with the 8-GHz bandwidth University of New South Wales-Mopra Spectrometer (UNSW-MOPS) digital filter bank, obtaining ∼2 km s−1 spectral and ∼40 arcsec spatial resolution. The lines measured include emission from the c-C3H2, CH3CCH, HOCO+, SO, H13CN, H13CO+, SO, H13NC, C2H, HNCO, HCN, HCO+, HNC, HC3N, 13CS and N2H+ molecules. The area covered is Galactic longitude −07 to 18 and latitude −03 to 02, including the bright dust cores around Sgr A, Sgr B2, Sgr C and G1.6−0.025. We present images from this study and conduct a principal component analysis on the integrated emission from the brightest eight lines. This is dominated by the first component, showing that the large-scale distribution of all molecules is very similar. We examine the line ratios and optical depths in selected apertures around the bright dust cores, as well as for the complete mapped region of the CMZ. We highlight the behaviour of the bright HCN, HNC and HCO+ line emission, together with that from the 13C isotopologues of these species, and compare the behaviour with that found in extragalactic sources where the emission is unresolved spatially. We also find that the isotopologue line ratios (e.g. HCO+/H13CO+) rise significantly with increasing redshifted velocity in some locations. This paper reports a reconnaissance survey of the concentrations of sterol compounds (as indicators of fecal contamination) in a large water supply system in southeast Australia comprising a network of rivers, channels, and drains. Levels of coprostanol and cholestanol were determined in surface water and bottom sediment using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis across 17 strategic sampling sites and over 12 months. Clear differences in the levels of fecal contamination were observed among sites. Four sites routinely contained high levels of the fecal indicator sterols indicated from surface water and sediment sample analysis. Coprostanol concentrations at each location varied from 0 ng/L at the reference site to 11,327 ng/L in a surface water sample of a drain directly downstream of a knackery. The majority of the sites contained coprostanol in the range of 500 to 800 ng/L. Since no fecal-associated sterol compounds were detected at the external reference sites, these were assumed to be free from fecal contamination. Sewage water discharge and/or substantial water runoff maybe the principal factors contributing to fecal contamination of the supply drains and channels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a study of the envelope of the young stellar object (YSO) GGD30IR. What distinguishes this from most other YSOs is the elongated absorption feature seen in silhouette against the background emission in the Spitzer Galactic Legacy Infrared Midplane Survey Extraordinaire 8 μm Infrared Array Camera image of the region. The size and the symmetrical placement of GGD30IR in the centre of this feature suggest that it is an extended envelope, perhaps the remnant of the collapse of the GGD30 core. We have used the extinction in the envelope measured from (i) the reduction in the 8 μm background intensity and (ii) field star colour excesses, to estimate the envelope mass, obtaining values of 0.6 ± 0.2 and , respectively. To investigate the envelope further, we have obtained Australia Telescope Compact Array 3 mm continuum and HCO+ line observations of the region. The continuum emission at 3 mm arises from both a compact (unresolved; ≤730 au) core embedded in an extended envelope ∼18 000 au × 38 000 au in extent. We estimate the core mass to be 0.11 ± 0.02 . The HCO+ emission is extended in a direction perpendicular to the long axis of the envelope, suggesting it comes from an outflow. The spectral energy distribution (SED) provides a 2–24 μm spectral index, α= 1.0, which places GGD30IR in the Class I YSO category. Integrating the SED provides a luminosity of . Equatorial planetary scale wave modes such as Kelvin waves or Rossby-gravity waves are excited by convective processes in the troposphere. In this paper an analysis for these and other equatorial wave modes is carried out with special focus on the stratosphere using temperature data from the SABER satellite instrument as well as ECMWF temperatures. Space-time spectra of symmetric and antisymmetric spectral power are derived to separate the different equatorial wave types and the contribution of gravity waves is determined from the spectral background of the space-time spectra. Both gravity waves and equatorial planetary scale wave modes are main drivers of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) in the stratosphere. Temperature variances attributed to the different wave types are calculated for the period from February 2002 until March 2006 and compared to previous findings. A comparison between SABER and ECMWF wave analyses shows that in the lower stratosphere SABER and ECMWF spectra and temperature variances agree remarkably well while in the upper stratosphere ECMWF tends to overestimate Kelvin wave components. Gravity wave variances are partly reproduced by ECMWF but have a significant low-bias. For the examples of a QBO westerly phase (October-December 2004) and a QBO easterly phase (November/December 2005, period of the SCOUT-O3 tropical aircraft campaign in Darwin/Australia) in the lower stratosphere we find qualitatively good agreement between SABER and ECMWF in the longitude-time distribution of Kelvin, Rossby (n=1), and Rossby-gravity waves. The second-order, three-dimensional, finite-depth wave theory is here used to investigate the statistical properties of the surface elevation and wave crests of field data from Lake George, Australia. A direct comparison of experimental and numerical data shows that, as long as the nonlinearity is small, the second-order model describes the statistical properties of field data very accurately. By low-pass filtering the Lake George time series, there is evidence that some energetic wave groups are accompanied by a setup instead of a setdown. A numerical study of the coupling coefficient of the second-order model reveals that such an experimental result is consistent with the second-order theory, provided directional spreading is included in the wave spectrum. In particular, the coupling coefficient of the second-order difference contribution predicts a setup as a result of the interaction of two waves with the same frequency but with different directions. This result is also confirmed by numerical simulations. Bispectral analysis, furthermore, indicates that this setup is a statistically significant feature of the observed wave records. In this study, independent classifications of Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery and Jet Propulsion Laboratory AirSAR were combined to create an integrated classification of pasture and other vegetation types for a study area in the agricultural zone of Western Australia. The resulting classification combines greenness and brightness information from optical data with structure and water content information from synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Field observations of vegetation type, botanical composition, ground cover percentage, wet and dry biomass, canopy height, and soil water content were collected at 34 sites representing a range of pastures, browse shrubs, and crops. An unsupervised version of the Complex Wishart classification procedure, based on preserving scattering characteristics from the Freeman and Durden backscatter decomposition, was applied to the C-, L-, and P-band polarimetric SAR data. The optical classification was carried out using a principle component analysis on the green, red, and near-infrared bands and clustering on the basis of a class centroid distance measure and knowledge of ground targets. These two classification results were then fused together. Assessment of a confusion matrix using the individual sites showed that identification of more uniform, dense, and structurally distinct canopies was better than that of more diverse, sparse, and structurally ambiguous canopies, as the former were better represented by the canopy height attribute used in the SAR classification component. The optical classification enabled correction of SAR misclassification of vegetation due to surface roughness and soil moisture effects, or similar backscatter responses from herbaceous or arboreal canopies. The results show that simplification of vegetation into groups based upon properties with sensitive responses in both the optical and SAR domains, and combination of separate SAR and optical classifications, has potential for improving classification of diverse and heterogeneous herbaceous and browse cover in grazing lands. However, collection of ground calibration data must be at an appropriate spatial scale and include canopy and surface measurements directly related to backscatter mechanisms and spectral sensitivity. Colour signals are a major cue in putative pollination syndromes. There is evidence that the reflectance spectra of many flowers target the distinctive visual discrimination abilities of hymenopteran insects, but far less is known about bird-pollinated flowers. Birds are hypothesized to exert different selective pressures on floral colour compared with hymenopterans because of differences in their visual systems. We measured the floral reflectance spectra of 206 Australian angiosperm species whose floral visitors are known from direct observation rather than inferred from floral characteristics. We quantified the match between these spectra and the hue discrimination abilities of hymenopteran and avian vision, and analysed these metrics in a phylogenetically informed comparison of flowers in different pollination groups. We show that bird-visited flowers and insect-visited flowers differ significantly from each other in the chromatic cues they provide, and that the differences are concentrated near wavelengths of optimal colour discrimination by whichever class of pollinator visits the flowers. Our results indicate that angiosperms have evolved the spectral signals most likely to reinforce their pollinators' floral constancy (the tendency of individual pollinators to visit flowers of the same species) in communities of similarly coloured floral competitors., (© 2013 The Authors. Chlorophyll d is a photosynthetic pigment that, based on chemical analyses, has only recently been recognized to be widespread in oceanic and lacustrine environments. However, the diversity of organisms harbouring this pigment is not known. Until now, the unicellular cyanobacterium Acaryochloris marina is the only characterized organism that uses chlorophyll d as a major photopigment. In this study we describe a new cyanobacterium possessing a high amount of chlorophyll d, which was isolated from waters around Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef (23° 26' 31.2″ S, 151° 54' 50.4″ E). The 16S ribosomal RNA is 2% divergent from the two previously described isolates of A. marina, which were isolated from waters around the Palau islands (Pacific Ocean) and the Salton Sea lake (California), suggesting that it belongs to a different clade within the genus Acaryochloris. An overview sequence analysis of its genome based on Illumina technology yielded 871 contigs with an accumulated length of 8 371 965 nt. Their analysis revealed typical features associated with Acaryochloris, such as an extended gene family for chlorophyll-binding proteins. However, compared with A. marina MBIC11017, distinct genetic, morphological and physiological differences were observed. Light saturation is reached at lower light intensities, Chl d/a ratios are less variable with light intensity and the phycobiliprotein phycocyanin is lacking, suggesting that cyanobacteria of the genus Acaryochloris occur in distinct ecotypes. These data characterize Acaryochloris as a niche-adapted cyanobacterium and show that more rigorous attempts are worthwhile to isolate, cultivate and analyse chlorophyll d-containing cyanobacteria for understanding the ecophysiology of these organisms.

Leaf chemical and spectral properties of 162 canopy species were measured at 11 tropical forest sites along a 6024 mm precipitation/yr and 8.7 degrees C climate gradient in Queensland, Australia. We found that variations in foliar nitrogen, phosphorus, chlorophyll a and b, and carotenoid concentrations, as well as specific leaf area (SLA), were expressed more strongly among species within a site than along the entire climate gradient. Integrated chemical signatures consisting of all leaf properties did not aggregate well at the genus or family levels. Leaf chemical diversity was maximal in the lowland tropical forest sites with the highest temperatures and moderate precipitation levels. Cooler and wetter montane tropical forests contained species with measurably lower variation in their chemical signatures. Foliar optical properties measured from 400 to 2500 nm were also highly diverse at the species level, and were well correlated with an ensemble of leaf chemical properties and SLA (r2 = 0.54-0.83). A probabilistic diversity model amplified the leaf chemical differences among species, revealing that lowland tropical forests maintain a chemical diversity per unit richness far greater than that of higher elevation forests in Australia. Modeled patterns in spectral diversity and species richness paralleled those of chemical diversity, demonstrating a linkage between the taxonomic and remotely sensed properties of tropical forest canopies. We conclude that species are the taxonomic unit causing chemical variance in Australian tropical forest canopies, and thus ecological and remote sensing studies should consider the role that species play in defining the functional properties of these forests.

This paper introduces an innovative framework for wind power prediction that focuses on the future of energy forecasting utilizing intelligent deep learning and strategic feature engineering. This research investigates the application of a state-of-the-art deep learning model for wind energy prediction to make extremely short-term forecasts using real-time data on wind generation from New South Wales, Australia. In contrast with typical approaches to wind energy forecasting, this model relies entirely on historical data and strategic feature engineering to make predictions, rather than relying on meteorological parameters. A hybrid feature engineering strategy that integrates features from several feature generation techniques to obtain the optimal input parameters is a significant contribution to this work. The model's performance is assessed using key metrics, yielding optimal results with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 8.76, Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 139.49, Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 11.81, R-squared score of 0.997, and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 4.85%. Additionally, the proposed framework outperforms six other deep learning and hybrid deep learning models in terms of wind energy prediction accuracy. These findings highlight the importance of advanced data analysis for feature generation in data processing, pointing to its key role in boosting the precision of forecasting applications. Mass-timber construction is becoming more prevalent in Australia and around the world. However, as these mass-timber buildings become taller, it is important to consider robust detailing against accidental damages to major load-bearing elements and thereby avoid potential progressive collapse scenarios. In order to better understand the robustness of typical mass-timber buildings, this study analyzed a typical 10-story midrise mass-timber building subjected to different progressive collapse scenarios. A scenario-independent approach was considered in the analysis, which includes the sudden removal of a load-bearing glulam column from the midrise mass-timber building. It was observed that when internal ties and bracings were provided, the robustness of the building was not affected as there was an alternative load path created. The orthogonal tie beam and diagonal bracing can transfer about 60% and 20% of the axial loads of the removed column to the adjacent columns, respectively. It was found that the building becomes vulnerable when no internal tie or bracing is available to transfer the accidental load. In this scenario, higher stiffness of the cross-laminated timber panel-to-panel joint can be adopted to improve the robustness of mass-timber building. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new inter‐basin teleconnection analysis method is proposed to comprehensively investigate the connection among global oceans. The strong negative correlation (−0.59) between sea surface temperature (SST) along Leeuwin Current (LC) and East Australia Current (EAC) is discovered and named as Australia Boundary Current Dipole (ABCD). This new inter‐basin air‐sea coupled mode exhibits remarkable interannual variability, with a peak phase in austral summer. The related SST anomalies are mainly generated by anomalous Australia High induced opposite alongshore surface winds to enhance/suppress the heat transport of the two warm currents, in turn, reinforce the wind anomalies by heating/cooling the overlying atmosphere and changing regional pressure anomalies. The meridional ocean advections control the anomalous SST, indicating the essential role of coastal Bjerknes feedback. The kinetic energy analysis further demonstrates that ABCD represents the reverse variation pattern of LC and EAC. Most studies of sea level budget only indicate the stationary causes for the global mean sea level (GMSL) rise over the course of a time span of interest, providing limited information on temporary changes in the GMSL budget. In this contribution, we present an instantaneous budget of the GMSL for the period of 2003–2015, which offers new insights on the time evolution of the GMSL budget. We use a space-state model to compute the instantaneous rates of GMSL and their contributing sources (barystatic and steric contributions), to investigate the causes of the GMSL instantaneous budget, which accounts for and quantifies low-frequency variations in GMSL rise. Combining the barystatic GMSL instantaneous rates (estimated from satellite gravimetry) along with a particular choice of steric GMSL instantaneous rates (inferred from an Argo product) achieves closure of the GMSL instantaneous budget with a standard deviation of 0.4 mm yr−1. We find that the barystatic GMSL rate is primarily responsible for the striking fluctuations in the GMSL instantaneous rates between 2009 and 2015. For example, over only 20 months (July 2010 to February 2012), the GMSL (barystatic) rate increases from 0.32 (0.71) to 6.12 (4.55) mm yr−1. These strong fluctuations mainly result from hydrology and mountain glacier mass variations rather than mass loss in ice sheet, for instance, Australia slowed ∼1.2 mm yr−1 equivalent contribution to GMSL rise over the year 2010, which is approximately four times the linear rate of Antarctica mass loss. Prey spectra (the number and composition of captured arthropods) represent a crucial aspect of carnivorous plant ecology, yet remain poorly studied. Traditional morphology-based approaches for prey identification are time-intensive, require specialists with considerable knowledge of arthropod taxonomy, and are hampered by high numbers of unidentifiable (i.e., heavily digested) prey items. We examined prey spectra of three species of closely-related annual Drosera (Droseraceae, sundews) from tropical northern Australia using a novel DNA metabarcoding approach with in-situ macro photography as a plausibility control and to facilitate prey quantity estimations. This new method facilitated accurate analyses of carnivorous plant prey spectra (even of heavily digested prey lacking characteristic morphological features) at a taxonomic resolution and level of completeness far exceeding morphology-based methods and approaching the 100% mark at arthropod order level. Although the three studied species exhibited significant differences in detected prey spectra, little prey specialisation was observed and habitat or plant population density variations were likely the main drivers of prey spectra dissimilarity. Overhead wiring structures (OWS) provide physical support to overhead electrical wires that power trains. They are typically spaced at 50 to 70 m. In a rail network, tens of thousands of these structures are required. Although they are simple structures, due to their numbers; design, construction and maintenance often involve large capital investments. Their reliability is also crucial to a safe operating rail network. This paper presents a review of OWS in Australia. Electrification of train services began in the 1910s, making some of the OWS over 100 years old. Descriptions in this article include their structural forms, design, construction, assessment and maintenance. It follows with a structural assessment carried out on a century-old riveted OWS built in the 1910s. This OWS was decommissioned in a recent railway renewal project which allowed the assessments to carry out. The assessment provides insights into hundreds of similar aged OWS still being used today. Assessments carried out consisted of tensile tests, corrosion depth measurements, radiographic imaging, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). Crevice corrosion is common in locations where moisture accumulated. Material properties were similar to modern-day Grade 250 steel with satisfactory ductility. Corrosion depths were less than those predicted. Samples of riveted connection showed no sign of deterioration within connected plates. This study may provide insights into structural design, construction and maintenance of similar structures in Australia and abroad. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-impedance faults are a challenging problem in power distribution systems. They often do not trigger protection devices and can result in serious hazards such as igniting fires when in contact with vegetation. The current research field dedicated to studying these faults is extensive but suffers from a constraining bottleneck of a lack of real experimental data. Many works set to detect and localize such faults rely on high-impedance fault low-fidelity models, and the lack of public data sets makes it impractical to have objective performance benchmarks. This letter describes and proposes a format for a data set of more than 900 vegetation high-impedance faults funded by the Victorian Government in Australia recorded in high-sampling resolution. The original data set is public, but it was made available through an obscure format that limits its accessibility. The presented format in this letter uses the standard hierarchical data format (HDF5), which makes it easily accessible in many languages such as MATLAB, Python, C++, and more. Using continuous data from a dense seismic array in Southwestern China, we tracked S‐wave microseism sources generated by two storms in Southeast Australia and the North Atlantic. In the frequency band 0.1–0.2 Hz, the beam strengths for SV‐ and SH‐wave sources can reach 29% and 18% of P‐wave, respectively. We found that the strong SH‐wave is only observed when the seismic sources are near the thick sedimentary regions whereas P‐ and SV‐wave is irrespective of that. It appears that in addition to a three‐dimensional structure that is needed for conversion from P‐wave to SH‐wave, amplitude enhancement by a sedimentary layer is essential for the detection of SH‐wave. Plain Language Summary: The interactions of ocean waves in the opposite propagation directions generate an equivalent vertical force in the ocean, creating dominant seismic noise in the frequency band 0.1–0.3 Hz. This forcing mechanism can explain the observations of P or Rayleigh waves but cannot explain the observations of SH or Love waves. In this study, from precise locations of SH‐wave sources in Southeast Australia and the North Atlantic, it is shown that SH‐wave sources are only found near a region of the thick sedimentary layer at the sea bottom. Amplification of waves in a thick sedimentary layer seems to be required to excite observable SH‐wave in seismic noise. Hourly river flow pattern monitoring and simulation is the indispensable precautionary task for river engineering sustainability, water resource management, flood risk mitigation, and impact reduction. Reliable river flow forecasting is highly emphasized to support major decision-makers. This research paper adopts a new implementation approach for the application of a river flow prediction model for hourly prediction of the flow of Mary River in Australia; a novel data-intelligent model called emotional neural network (ENN) was used for this purpose. A historical dataset measured over a 4-year period (2011–2014) at hourly timescale was used in building the ENN-based predictive model. The results of the ENN model were validated against the existing approaches such as the minimax probability machine regression (MPMR), relevance vector machine (RVM), and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) models. The developed models are evaluated against each other for validation purposes. Various numerical and graphical performance evaluators are conducted to assess the predictability of the proposed ENN and the competitive benchmark models. The ENN model, used as an objective simulation tool, revealed an outstanding performance when applied for hourly river flow prediction in comparison with the other benchmark models. However, the order of the model, performance wise, is ENN > MARS > RVM > MPMR. In general, the present results of the proposed ENN model reveal a promising modeling strategy for the hourly simulation of river flow, and such a model can be explored further for its ability to contribute to the state-of-the-art of river engineering and water resources monitoring and future prediction at near real-time forecast horizons. We report on aerobic "environmental" bacteria isolated from European honey bees (Apis mellifera). We determined the number of culturable aerobic bacteria in the gut of nurse bees sampled from locations around Australia. Bees from healthy colonies had 107–108 aerobic bacteria per g of bee gut, while bees from colonies with chalkbrood consistently had significantly fewer bacteria (104–105 bacteria per g). When colonies recovered from chalkbrood, bacterial numbers returned to normal levels, suggesting that counting aerobic bacteria in the gut could be used to predict an outbreak of the disease. Furthermore, Western Australian bees from the "Better Bees" program (bred to promote hygienic behaviour) had significantly higher numbers of aerobic gut bacteria compared to regular bees from healthy colonies. Bacteria with the ability to inhibit the chalkbrood pathogen were found in most bees from regular colonies (> 60%) but only in a few "Better Bees" (10%). Phylogenetic analysis of aerobic bacterial isolates that inhibited the chalkbrood pathogen revealed a close relationship (>97% sequence identity) to the genera Bacillus, Klebsiella, Pantoea, Hafnia, and Enterobacter (bacteria that have previously been isolated from honey bees), but we also isolated Maccrococcus and Frigoribacterium species (bacteria that were not previously identified in bees). Finally, we investigated the ability of bacteria to inhibit the chalkbrood fungus Ascosphaera apis. Mass spectroscopy analysis revealed that the bee gut isolates Frigoribacterium sp. and Bacillus senegalensis produce gluconic acid. We further found that this simple sugar is involved in chalkbrood fungal hyphal lysis and cytoplasmic leakage. Areas affected by dryland salinity in Australia are predicted to more than double over the next 40 years as a result of land use and climatic changes. This presents a significant risk to road asset managers because the concentration of salts within road pavements has been shown to cause damage to pavements and surfacings. The present study explores the impact of dryland salinity on road pavements by assessing the effect of naturally occurring salts on the tensile and shear strength of a sealed granular pavement. Microstructure analysis techniques using scanning electron microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry were employed to analyze tested specimens to explain the physical mechanisms that occur as a result of salt concentration. The presence of natural salts was found to have a positive effect on granular pavements but a negative impact on bituminous surfacings. While in solution, salts were found to have a very small positive effect on the tensile strength of the pavement material, which is likely related to clay chemistry interactions. Upon crystallization, salts were observed to form bonds within the pores of the pavement material, which led to a significant increase in tensile strength and a moderate increase in shear strength. However, at the interface between the surfacing and the pavement material, whisker-shaped crystals were observed to grow from the bitumen. Interestingly, the chemical composition of the two types of crystals observed was found to be completely different, despite occurring within the same specimens, under the same conditions. Among trapping mechanisms in carnivorous plants, those termed 'active' have especially fascinated scientists since Charles Darwin's early works because trap movements are involved. Fast snap-trapping and suction of prey are two of the most spectacular examples for how these plants actively catch animals, mainly arthropods, for a substantial nutrient supply. We show that Drosera glanduligera, a sundew from southern Australia, features a sophisticated catapult mechanism: Prey animals walking near the edge of the sundew trigger a touch-sensitive snap-tentacle, which swiftly catapults them onto adjacent sticky glue-tentacles; the insects are then slowly drawn within the concave trap leaf by sticky tentacles. This is the first detailed documentation and analysis of such catapult-flypaper traps in action and highlights a unique and surprisingly complex mechanical adaptation to carnivory. Brick veneer construction is a very common form for residential structures in Australia and is growing in popularity in New Zealand. The structural frame is made from steel or timber, and non-structural brick walls are attached to the frame via brick ties. Under earthquake loading there is a complex interaction between the frame and veneer walls, particularly in the outof- plane direction, where there is risk of brick wall collapse. While there is a standard component test method for assessing the seismic capacity of brick ties, this method has been developed around brick veneer on timber studs. In order to realistically assess the overall performance of brick veneer construction with steel framing, a full scale one-room test structure "Test House" was tested on a shaking table. The Test House incorporated veneer walls with different geometries. It was subjected to varying levels of the El-Centro earthquake ranging from moderate serviceability limit state ground motion to well beyond the design maximum considered earthquake for New Zealand. These levels of shaking were selected in order to ascertain the response for specifi c limit states to the New Zealand Loading Standard and to compare against minimum performance requirements. Comprehensive measurements on the frame and veneer walls were taken, including acceleration, drift and differential movements between the frame and veneer. The Test House performed very well, with no brick loss up to 2.6 times El-Centro earthquake, which is well in excess of all performance requirements. Past variations in the dynamics of the Australian monsoon have been estimated from multi-proxy analysis of a core retrieved in the Eastern Banda Sea. Records of coccolith and pollen assemblages, spanning the last 150 000 years, allow reconstruction of past primary production in the Banda Sea, summer moisture availability, and the length of the dry season in northern Australia and southeastern Indonesia. The amount of moisture available during the summer monsoon follows typical glacial/interglacial dynamics with a broad asymmetrical 100-kyr cycle. Primary production and length of the dry season appear to be closely related, given that they follow the precessional cycle with the same phase. This indicates their independence from ice-volume variations. The present inter-annual variability of both parameters is related to El Nîno Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which modulates the Australian Winter Monsoon (AWM). The precessional pattern observed in the past dynamics of the AWM is found in ENSO and monsoon records of other regions. A marked shift in the monsoon intensity occurring during the mid Holocene during a period of constant ice volume, suggests that low latitude climatic variation precedes increases in global ice volume. This precessional pattern suggests that a common forcing mechanism underlies low latitude climate dynamics, acting specifically and synchronously on the different monsoon systems. Australia has conducted research into over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) for almost sixty years. Early programs focused exclusively on military capabilities, such as the detection of aircraft, missiles and ships, but 1974 a team was formed to design a new OTIfR for which a remote sensing mission was proposed. Oceanic wind mapping experiments in 1977- 78 yielded promising results so remote sensing became a reeognised mission assigned to the new radar, known as Jindalee Stage B. This capability was progressively expanded over the period 1982-87 to include mapping of wave height and other oceanographic variables. A real-time data link to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology was set up in 1985, providing daily wind direction maps covering over one million square kilometres of the NW Indian Ocean, the Timor Sea and the Arafura Sea. In concert with user-focused remote sensing programs, investigations were undertaken to gain a detailed understanding of issues relating to propagation, system calibration, radar resource management and scheduling. Many theoretical studies and radar experiments were conducted to assess the radar's ability to measure ever more ambitious geophysical phenomena, ranging from oil spills and tropical rainfall to cyclogenesis and volcanic activity. Inevitably, as the radar evolved into a facility owned and operated by the Royal Australian Air" Force, the remote sensing mission had to compete with surveillance tasks with higher priorities and the quality of the routine service provided to the Bureau of Meteorology deteriorated, eventually being terminated after" a decade of activity. Recent advances in a technique to identify and catalog waves that ride on larger-scale carrier waves are described in detail. The latest developments allow the riding wave removal technique to correctly identify and replace riding waves at the Nyquist frequency scale. A field experiment to study the spectral balance of the source terms for wind-generated waves in finite water depth was carried out in Lake George, Australia. The measurements were made from a shore-connected platform at varying water depths from 1.2 m down to 20 cm. Wind conditions and the geometry of the lake were such that fetch-limited conditions with fetches ranging from approximately 10 km down to 1 km prevailed. The resulting waves were intermediate-depth wind waves with inverse wave ages in the range 1 < U10/Cp < 8. The atmospheric input, bottom friction, and whitecap dissipation were measured directly and synchronously by an integrated measurement system, described in the paper. In addition, simultaneous data defining the directional wave spectrum, atmospheric boundary layer profile, and atmospheric turbulence were available. The contribution to the spectral evolution due to nonlinear interactions of various orders is investigated by a combination of bispectral analysis of the data and numerical modeling. The relatively small scale of the lake enabled experimental conditions such as the wind field and bathymetry to be well defined. The observations were conducted over a 3-yr period, from September 1997 to August 2000, with a designated intensive measurement period [the Australian Shallow Water Experiment (AUSWEX)] carried out in August–September 1999. The global ionosphere map (GIM) is not capable of serving precise positioning and navigation for single frequency receivers in Australia due to sparse International GNSS Service (IGS) stations located in the vast land. This study proposes an approach to represent Australian total electron content (TEC) using the spherical cap harmonic analysis (SCHA) and artificial neural network (ANN). The new Australian TEC maps are released with an interval of 15 min for longitude and latitude in 0.5° × 0.5°. The validation results show that the Australian Ionospheric Maps (AIMs) well represent the hourly and seasonally ionospheric electrodynamic features over the Australian continent; the accuracy of the AIMs improves remarkably compared to the GIM and the model built only by the SCHA. The residual of the AIM is inversely proportional to the level of solar radiation. During the equinoxes and solstices in a solar minimum year, the residuals are 2.16, 1.57, 1.68, and 1.98 total electron content units (TECUs, 1 TECU = 1016 electron/m2), respectively. Furthermore, the AIM has a strong capability in capturing the adequate electrodynamic evolutions of the traveling ionospheric disturbances under severe geomagnetic storms. Satellite remote sensing of vegetation at regional to global scales is undertaken at considerable variations in solar zenith angle (SZA) across space and time, yet the extent to which these SZA variations matter for the retrieval of phenology remains largely unknown. Here we examined the effect of seasonal and spatial variations in SZA on retrieving vegetation phenology from time series of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) across a study area in southeastern Australia encompassing forest, woodland, and grassland sites. The vegetation indices (VI) data span two years and are from the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), which is onboard the Japanese Himawari-8 geostationary satellite. The semi-empirical RossThick-LiSparse-Reciprocal (RTLSR) bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) model was inverted for each spectral band on a daily basis using 10-minute reflectances acquired by H-8 AHI at different sun-view geometries for each site. The inverted RTLSR model was then used to forward calculate surface reflectance at three constant SZAs (20°, 40°, 60°) and one seasonally varying SZA (local solar noon), all normalised to nadir view. Time series of NDVI and EVI adjusted to different SZAs at nadir view were then computed, from which phenological metrics such as start and end of growing season were retrieved. Results showed that NDVI sensitivity to SZA was on average nearly five times greater than EVI sensitivity. VI sensitivity to SZA also varied among sites (biome types) and phenological stages, with NDVI sensitivity being higher during the minimum greenness period than during the peak greenness period. Seasonal SZA variations altered the temporal profiles of both NDVI and EVI, with more pronounced differences in magnitude among NDVI time series normalised to different SZAs. When using VI time series that allowed SZA to vary at local solar noon, the uncertainties in estimating start, peak, end, and length of growing season introduced by local solar noon varying SZA VI time series, were 7.5, 3.7, 6.5, and 11.3 days for NDVI, and 10.4, 11.9, 6.5, and 8.4 days for EVI respectively, compared to VI time series normalised to a constant SZA. Furthermore, the stronger SZA dependency of NDVI compared with EVI, resulted in up to two times higher uncertainty in estimating annual integrated VI, a commonly used remote-sensing proxy for vegetation productivity. Since commonly used satellite products are not generally normalised to a constant sun-angle across space and time, future studies to assess the sun-angle effects on satellite applications in agriculture, ecology, environment, and carbon science are urgently needed. Measurements taken by new-generation geostationary (GEO) satellites offer an important opportunity to refine this assessment at finer temporal scales. In addition, studies are needed to evaluate the suitability of different BRDF models for normalising sun-angle across a broad spectrum of vegetation structure, phenological stages and geographic locations. Only through continuous investigations on how sun-angle variations affect spatiotemporal vegetation dynamics and what is the best strategy to deal with it, can we achieve a more quantitative remote sensing of true signals of vegetation change across the entire globe and through time. This paper presents the results from a study on the application of an artificial neural network (ANN) model for regional flood frequency analysis (RFFA). The study was conducted using stream flow data from 88 gauging stations across New South Wales (NSW) in Australia. Five different models consisting of three to eight predictor variables (i.e., annual rainfall, drainage area, fraction forested area, potential evapotranspiration, rainfall intensity, river slope, shape factor and stream density) were tested. The results show that an ANN model with a higher number of predictor variables does not always improve the performance of RFFA models. For example, the model with three predictor variables performs considerably better than the models using a higher number of predictor variables, except for the one which contains all the eight predictor variables. The model with three predictor variables exhibits smaller median relative error values for 2- and 20-year return periods compared to the model containing eight predictor variables. However, for 5-, 10-, 50- and 100-year return periods, the model with eight predictor variables shows smaller median relative error values. Electricity load forecasting plays an essential role in improving the management efficiency of power generation systems. A large number of load forecasting models aiming at promoting the forecasting effectiveness have been put forward in the past. However, many traditional models have no consideration for the significance of data preprocessing and the constraints of individual forecasting models. Moreover, most of them only focus on the forecasting accuracy but ignore the forecasting stability, resulting in nonoptimal performance in practical applications. This paper presents a novel hybrid model that combines an advanced data preprocessing strategy, a deep neural network, and an avant-garde multi-objective optimization algorithm, overcoming the defects of traditional models and thus improving the forecasting performance effectively. In order to evaluate the validity of the proposed hybrid model, the electricity load data sampled in 30-min intervals from Queensland, Australia are used as a case to study. The experiments show that the new proposed model is obviously superior to all other traditional models. Furthermore, it provides an effective technical forecasting means for smart grid management.
