In this paper, the possibility of using nonlinear ultrasonic guided waves for early-life material degradation in metal plates is investigated through both computational modeling and study. The analysis of the second harmonics of Lamb waves in a free boundary aluminum plate, and the internal resonance conditions between the Lamb wave primary modes and the second harmonics are investigated. Subsequently, Murnaghan's hyperelastic model is implemented in a finite element (FE) analysis to study the response of aluminum plates subjected to a 60 kHz Hanning-windowed tone burst. Different stages of material degradation are reflected as the changes in the third order elastic constants (TOECs) of the Murnaghan's model. The reconstructed degradations match the actual ones well across various degrees of degradation. The effects of several relevant factors on the accuracy of reconstructions are also discussed.

Acoustic emission (AE) is a non-destructive technique that relies on monitoring naturally occurring sources of high frequency ultrasound in components and structures. Ultrasonic waves propagate in the form of different wave modes—for instance Lamb waves in thin plates, or Rayleigh and P- and S- waves in bulk structures. Those wave modes have different properties, but also contain information regarding the source of the naturally occurring wave. Manually, the wave modes can be recognized by comparing a time–frequency representation of the signal to the dispersion curves expected in the tested object. For analyzing a large number of signals, this manual mode recognition becomes a tedious process. This paper proposes a method to automate the wave mode recognition based on some minimal knowledge of the occurring wave modes. As inputs, only the propagation speed of the possible wave modes and the source position need to be provided along with a limited set of reference wavelets for each wave mode. Cross-correlation of a signal with a reference wavelet of a mode reduces the signal to a limited number of peaks that may delineate the start of the mode. Using other signals from the same event but from different sensors, velocities are calculated for each peak in order to select the peak that corresponds to the arrival of the mode under investigation. To validate the method, a dataset was recorded based on four types of out-of-plane sources: Hsu-Nielsen sources of 0.3 and 0.5 mm, sensor pulse signals and AEs from melting ice. Since the presented dataset was recorded on a plate, the aim of the validation was to recognize the zero-order symmetrical and anti-symmetrical Lamb modes. The results of the proposed mode recognition method applied to this dataset are compared with results from manual mode recognition. For Hsu-Nielsen sources, the succes rate is found to be above 95%. For narrow-band pulsed signals or for AEs from melting ice with a low signal-to-noise ratio, succes rates between 75 and 80% relative to manual mode recognition are reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultrasonic guided waves, which are often generated and detected by piezoelectric transducers, are well established to monitor engineering structures. Wireless solutions are sought to eliminate cumbersome wire installation. This work proposes a method for remote ultrasonic-based structural health monitoring (SHM) using mechanoluminescence (ML). Propagating guided waves transmitted by a piezoelectric transducer attached to a structure induce elastic deformation that can be captured by elastico-ML. An ML coating composed of copper-doped zinc sulfide (ZnS:Cu) particles embedded in PVDF on a thin aluminium plate can be used to achieve the elastico-ML for the remote sensing of propagating guided waves. The simulation and experimental results indicated that a very high voltage would be required to reach the threshold pressure applied to the ML particles, which is about 1.5 MPa for ZnS particles. The high voltage was estimated to be 214 Vpp for surface waves and 750 Vpp for Lamb waves for the studied configuration. The possibility of using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique, along with Lamb wave analysis, was investigated in this study for damage detection and characterization of polymer carbon fiber (CFRP) composites with the help of numerical modeling. The finite element model (FEM) of the composite specimen with artificial damage was developed in ANSYS and validated by the results of full-field DIC strain measurements. A quantitative analysis of the damage detection capabilities of DIC structure surface strain measurements in the context of different defect sizes, depths, and orientation angles relative to the loading direction was conducted. For Lamb wave analysis, a 2D spatial-temporal spectrum analysis and FEM using ABAQUS software were conducted to investigate the interaction of Lamb waves with the different defects. It was demonstrated that the FEM updating procedure could be used to characterize damage shape and size from the composite structure surface strain field from DIC. DIC defect detection capabilities for different loadings are demonstrated for the CFRP composite. For the identification of any composite defect, its characterization, and possible further monitoring, a methodology based on initial Lamb wave analysis followed by DIC testing is proposed. In this paper, piezoceramic-based excitation of shear horizontal waves is investigated. A thickness-shear d15 piezoceramic transducer is modeled using the finite-element method. The major focus is on the directivity and excitability of the shear horizontal fundamental mode with respect to the maximization of excited shear and minimization of Lamb wave modes. The results show that the geometry of the transducer has more effect on the directivity than on the excitability of the analyzed actuator. Numerically simulated results are validated experimentally. The experimental results show that transducer bonding significantly affects the directivity and amplitude of the excited modes. In conclusion, when the selected actuator is used for shear excitation, the best solution is to tailor the transducer in such a way that at the resonant frequency the desired directivity is achieved. Composite plates are susceptible to various damages in complex conditions and working environments, which may reduce the reliability of the structure and threaten equipment and personal safety. Thus, the implementation of a robust online Structural health monitoring (SHM) system for these composite structures becomes imperative. To enhance reliability and safety, we introduce a robust online SHM system anchored by our newly developed damage detection Bayesian neural network (DD-BNN). The main contribution of this study lies in the DD-BNN to perform precise and reliable damage detection and localization in composite plates using only one actuator-receiver pair without any signal/feature pre-processing and human intervention. The proposed DD-BNN model innovatively combines probabilistic modeling with deep learning to address uncertainty in Lamb wave-based damage detection and model performance for composite plates, featuring a specialized probabilistic layer trained through Bayesian inference to efficiently encapsulate and manage uncertainty in model weights and activation. Notably, our method significantly simplifies the SHM system design and manual operation requirements. In addition, this approach not only reduces overfitting but also enhances robustness to noise, as confirmed by experiments on perturbation analysis of Gaussian and Poisson noise. Delamination represents one of the most significant and dangerous damages in composite plates. Recently, many papers have presented the capability of structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques for the investigation of structural delamination with various shapes and thickness depths. However, few studies have been conducted regarding the utilization of convolutional neural network (CNN) methods for automating the non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques database to identify the delamination size and depth. In this paper, an automated system qualified for distinguishing between pristine and damaged structures and classifying three classes of delamination with various depths is presented. This system includes a proposed CNN model and the Lamb wave technique. In this work, a unidirectional composite plate with three samples of delamination inserted at different depths was prepared for numerical and experimental investigations. In the numerical part, the guided wave propagation and interaction with three samples of delamination were studied to observe how the delamination depth can affect the scattered and trapped waves over the delamination region. This numerical study was validated experimentally using an efficient ultrasonic guided waves technique. This technique involved piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWASs) and a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV). Both numerical and experimental studies demonstrate that the delamination depth has a direct effect on the trapped waves' energy and distribution. Three different datasets were collected from the numerical and experimental studies, involving the numerical wavefield image dataset, experimental wavefield image dataset, and experimental wavenumber spectrum image dataset. These three datasets were used independently with the proposed CNN model to develop a system that can automatically classify four classes (pristine class and three different delamination classes). The results of all three datasets show the capability of the proposed CNN model for predicting the delamination depth with high accuracy. The proposed CNN model results of the three different datasets were validated using the GoogLeNet CNN. The results of both methods show an excellent agreement. Thin copper plate is widely used in architecture, transportation, heavy equipment, and integrated circuit substrates due to its unique properties. However, it is challenging to identify surface defects in copper strips arising from various manufacturing stages without direct contact. A laser ultrasonic inspection system was developed based on the Lamb wave (LW) produced by a laser pulse. An all-fiber laser heterodyne interferometer is applied for measuring the ultrasonic signal in combination with an automatic scanning system, which makes the system flexible and compact. A 3-D model simulation of an H62 brass specimen was carried out to determine the LW spatial-temporal wavefield by using the COMSOL Multiphysics software. The characteristics of the ultrasonic wavefield were extracted through continuous wavelet transform analysis. This demonstrates that the A0 mode could be used in defect detection due to its slow speed and vibrational direction. Furthermore, an ultrasonic wave at the center frequency of 370 kHz with maximum energy is suitable for defect detection. In the experiment, the size and location of the defect are determined by the time difference of the transmitted wave and reflected wave, respectively. The relative error of the defect position is 0.14% by averaging six different receiving spots. The width of the defect is linear to the time difference of the transmitted wave. The goodness of fit can reach 0.989, and it is in good agreement with the simulated one. The experimental error is less than 0.395 mm for a 5 mm width of defect. The effect of interface dislocation networks on the mechanical properties of new Ni–based single crystal alloys containing Rhenium (Re) is very large. Because the interface dislocations are microscopic in the nano–scale range, this has not been investigated, and it is very difficult to prepare new Ni–based single crystal alloys containing Re. Therefore, six kinds of new Ni–based single crystal alloys containing Re were prepared, and the hardness tests and nonlinear ultrasonic lamb wave tests were performed on the samples. It was found that the density of interface dislocation networks increases with the increase in the content of Re, which improves the blocking ability of matrix phase dislocation cutting into precipitated phase and enhances the inhibition of dislocation movement. The nonlinear ultrasonic lamb wave tests showed that the materials exhibit better mechanical properties when the density of the interface dislocation networks increases. Meanwhile, a new molecular dynamics model which is closer to the real state of an Ni–based single crystal alloy was constructed to reveal the evolution mechanism of interface dislocation networks. The results showed that the potential energy of Re atoms at the interface is the lowest, which affects the reduction of the potential energy of other atoms at the interface, and thus the stability of the model is improved. In addition, according to the change in the total length of dislocation loops in the model system, with the increase in the content of Re atoms, the inhibition of dislocation movement by dislocation networks at the interface is strengthened. Ultrasonic guided wave non-destructive testing technology, as one of the most widely used techniques in non-destructive testing, has encountered challenges in breaking the diffraction limit to achieve finer super-resolution imaging during its development. As a type of wave accompanying ultrasonic guided wave damage detection, the transient wave has had the potential to achieve super-resolution imaging in recent years due to its high wave number and sub-wavelength characteristics. In order to overcome its spatial attenuation characteristics, this study constructs a periodic plate-column structure metamaterial. By utilizing its resonance with sub-wavelength Bloch modes at specific frequencies and the interaction with transient waves carrying sub-wavelength information, the wave carrying sub-wavelength signals is amplified, transformed, and transmitted to the far field, thereby achieving super-resolution imaging. The dispersion characteristics of the periodic plate-column structure were simulated and experimentally investigated. The super-resolution imaging effect of the periodic plate-column structure metamaterial was simulated using the time-reversal imaging method and experimentally validated, providing a basis for achieving damage super-resolution imaging with periodic plate-column structures. Welded lap joints play a vital role in a wide range of engineering structures such as pipelines, storage tanks, pressure vessels, and ship hulls. This study aims to investigate the propagation of ultrasonic guided waves in steel welded lap joints for the baseline-free inspection of joint defects using the mode conversion of Lamb waves. The finite element method was used to simulate a single lap joint with common defects such as corrosion and disbonding. To identify the propagating wave modes, a wavenumber–frequency analysis was conducted using the 2D fast Fourier transform. The power loss of the transmitted modes was also determined to identify damage in the lap joints. The results indicate that the A0 incident in pristine conditions experienced significant transmission losses of about 9.5 dB compared to an attenuation of 2.8 dB for the S0 incident. The presence of corrosion was found to reduce these transmission losses by more than 28%. In contrast, introducing disbonding in the lap joint increased the transmission loss of the S0 incident, while a negligible loss was observed for the A0 incident. The mode-converted S0 (MC-S) and mode-converted A0 (MC-A0) incidents were found to exhibit a unique sensitivity to the presence of corrosion and disbonding. The results indicate that MC-S0 and MC-A0 as well as Lamb mode incidents interact differently in terms of corrosion and disbonding, providing a means to identify damage without relying on baseline signals. The ice formation over the aerofoil structure of the aircraft wing has been an obstruction as they abrupt the airflow, acting as drag. The investigation will intend to determine ice accumulation on carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), approximated as ice build-up on aircraft wings. The observation is carried out over quasi-isotropic composite laminates using ultrasonic-guided waves with a central working frequency regime of 100 kHz. The three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) simulations are performed to observe the scattering effect to explore the reflection site in the far field. This effect was quite prominent for different thicknesses of Glaze ice (G-Ice) and was found to be strongly linked with the wave propagation and dispersion effect. The scattering results for the reflection of Lamb mode, when it interacted with the G-Ice interface, were quite noteworthy along the angular region rather than on the center line, indicating that the scattering was more prominent due to the presence of a 45° or (− 45)-degree fiber orientation in that laminate. A similar but complex scattering phenomenon was observed for different stacking sequences where the wave propagation angle and its amplitude at the receiver nodes are found to be closely bound with the exponential decay in group/phase velocity for the ice thicknesses studied. The FE approach is verified, and the results are validated analytically. Analytically, we have investigated a much-closed approximation with the detectability obtained from three-dimensional studies. Where the dispersion study performed has also contributed to verifying the present investigation in the long wavelength limits. This study can reveal the various optimized locations for placing the sensor for ice detection and quantification, which can be further helpful for practical guided wave inspection in ice detection and its removal. The volcano of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai in Tonga erupted on 15 January 2022, generating severe disturbances in the atmosphere and the ionosphere. This event provided us with large amount of data of the atmosphere and the ionosphere, and various kinds of observational studies have been made. Recently several simulation studies have also been made to reproduce and understand the atmosphere–ionosphere variations driven by the volcanic eruption. Although the simulation studies have reproduced the global variations of the atmosphere and the ionosphere successfully, phenomena related with acoustic waves have not been fully investigated. We employed an axisymmetric three-dimensional nonhydrostatic atmospheric model and the whole atmosphere–ionosphere coupled model GAIA. We found that the simulation can produce various kinds of atmospheric waves generated by the eruption, such as acoustic waves, gravity waves, Lamb waves, Pekeris waves, and TIDs concentrically propagating from the eruption site, and atmospheric oscillations with a period of a few minutes. In addition, the results indicate that the eruption generates supersonic shock waves in the volcanic region, leading to the extremely large vertical oscillations in the thermosphere and ionosphere above the volcanic eruption region. Human health monitoring (HHM) is essential for continued daily task execution, as is structural health monitoring (SHM) for structures to ensure the continual performance of their designed tasks with optimal efficiency. The existence of damage in a structure affects its optimal use through stiffness deterioration. Damage of different forms could occur in a structure but have the singular objective of material degradation, leading to its underuse for a task. Guided wave ultrasonics has shown strength in detecting sundry damage in structures, but most of the damage monitored and detected is unfilled with substances. However, some damage could trap and accumulate substances that could hasten material degradation through corrosion activities under favorable conditions, especially in the oil and gas industry. This study used the ultrasonic-guided waves' pitch–catch inspection technique to identify damage filled with different materials. The assessment was based on the RMSD of the dominant Lamb wave mode's average maximum amplitude and the response signals' transmission coefficient (TC). A five-cycle tone burst of excitation signals of different frequencies was created to generate propagating Lamb waves in the structure. The fundamental antisymmetric mode was found to be more sensitive than the fundamental symmetric mode when detecting damage filled with various substances. At 80 kHz, the deviation of the current response signals from the baseline response signals due to different filled substances in the damage was distinct and decreased with increased fluid viscosity. Traditional methods for detecting damage in engineering structures often use offline static damage detection. To enable the real-time and precise identification of dynamic damage while maintaining symmetry in engineering structures, this study primarily concentrates on isotropic plate structures widely employed in engineering. Moreover, fiberglass board composite plates were opted as a specific research object. By utilizing the weak S0 mode signals generated by low-frequency ultrasonic Lamb waves, the non-stationary A0 wave signals in the composite symmetry plate structure are collected using the non-contact SLDV (Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer) technique. The frequency characteristic parameters in the vibration signals are obtained through HHT (Hilbert–Huang Transform) analysis, followed by filtering and noise reduction. Finally, the circular trajectory intersection method is employed to accurately locate dynamic damage sources in plate structures with different material properties, thereby validating the positioning effect of contact sensors in detecting impacts caused by random impulses. The ultrasonic guided lamb wave approach is an effective non-destructive testing (NDT) method used for detecting localized mechanical damage, corrosion, and welding defects in metallic pipelines. The signal processing of guided waves is often challenging due to the complexity of the operational conditions and environment in the pipelines. Machine learning approaches in recent years, including convolutional neural networks (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM), have exhibited their advantages to overcome these challenges for the signal processing and data classification of complex systems, thus showing great potential for damage detection in critical oil/gas pipeline structures. In this study, a CNN-LSTM hybrid model was utilized for decoding ultrasonic guided waves for damage detection in metallic pipelines, and twenty-nine features were extracted as input to classify different types of defects in metallic pipes. The prediction capacity of the CNN-LSTM model was assessed by comparing it to those of CNN and LSTM. The results demonstrated that the CNN-LSTM hybrid model exhibited much higher accuracy, reaching 94.8%, as compared to CNN and LSTM. Interestingly, the results also revealed that predetermined features, including the time, frequency, and time–frequency domains, could significantly improve the robustness of deep learning approaches, even though deep learning approaches are often believed to include automated feature extraction, without hand-crafted steps as in shallow learning. Furthermore, the CNN-LSTM model displayed higher performance when the noise level was relatively low (e.g., SNR = 9 or higher), as compared to the other two models, but its prediction dropped gradually with the increase of the noise. Guided ultrasonic waves are used for the inspection of multilayered composite aerospace structures. Calculating the corresponding dispersion diagrams is challenging for thick-walled composites with more than 100 layers, such as in modern rocket booster pressure vessels. The Dispersion Calculator (DC) is an open source software for calculating such dispersion diagrams and mode shapes of guided waves. Attenuation caused by viscoelasticity and fluid-loading makes the dispersion curve tracing much more difficult than in the nonattenuated case because the modal solutions are sought in the complex wavenumber plane. The tracing problem is mastered by a reliable algorithm. Whereas leaky Lamb and Scholte waves in coupled and decoupled cases are modeled using the stiffness matrix method, shear horizontal (SH) waves are traced using the transfer matrix method without facing the numerical instability. Through implementation of mode family specific dispersion equations in both matrix techniques for nonattenuated and attenuated cases, symmetric, antisymmetric, and nonsymmetric leaky Lamb, Scholte, and SH waves can be traced separately with better efficiency and robustness. The capabilities of DC are demonstrated by calculating dispersion diagrams and mode shapes for a viscoelastic composite with 400 layers immersed in water. The influence of the wavelength difference between the laser source and the phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) on the intensity of the power demodulation system based on an adjustable laser source was studied experimentally, and the optimum of the output laser wavelength was determined. Then, the research on time-frequency imaging damage identification based on smooth pseudo-Wigner-Ville distribution was carried out. The Time of Flight of the acoustic wave signal was calculated and time compensation was made according to the Wigner-Ville distribution and the Lamb wave dispersion curve. The ultrasonic waves before and after damage were measured with spatially arranged PS-FBGs. The difference signals were processed in a window, and then the time-frequency energy of the normalized difference signal was imaged to assess the damage detection and location. Although the mode and group velocity of ultrasound measured by each fiber grating were different, the accurate location and identification of artificial damage in an aluminum alloy plate was realized by using only three PS-FBGs and a smooth Wigner time-frequency imaging method. The application of non-stationary Lamb wave signals is a promising tool in various industrial applications where information about changes inside a structure is required. Phase velocity is one of the Lamb wave parameters that can be used for inhomogeneities detection. The possibility of reconstructing the segment of the phase velocity in a strong dispersion range using only two signals is proposed. The theoretical study is performed using signals of the A0 mode propagating in an aluminium plate at a frequency of 150 kHz, 300 kHz, 500 kHz and 900 kHz. The experiment was carried out at a value of 300 kHz. The studies conducted indicated that the maximum distance between two signals, at which the time-of-flight can be measured between the same phase points, is the main parameter for the two signals technique application. Theoretical and experimental studies were performed, and the mean relative error was calculated by comparing the obtained results with those calculated via the SAFE method. In the theoretical study, the mean relative error of 0.33% was obtained at 150 kHz, 0.22% at 300 kHz, 0.23% at 500 kHz and 0.11% at 900 kHz. The calculated mean relative errors δ c p h = 0.91 % and δ c p h = 1.36 % were obtained at different distances in the experimental study. Damage detection and localization based on ultrasonic guided waves revealed to be promising for structural health monitoring and nondestructive testing. However, the use of a piezoelectric sensor's network to locate and image damaged areas in composite structures requires a number of precautions including the consideration of anisotropy and baseline signals. The lack of information related to these two parameters drastically deteriorates the imaging performance of numerous signal processing methods. To avoid such deterioration, the present contribution proposes different methods to build baseline signals in different types of composites. Baseline signals are first constructed from a numerical simulation model using the previously determined elasticity tensor of the structure. Since the latter tensor is not always easy to obtain especially in the case of anisotropic materials, a second PZT network is used in order to obtain signals related to Lamb waves propagating in different directions. Waveforms are then translated according to a simplified theoretical propagation model of Lamb waves in homogeneous structures. The application of the different methods on transversely isotropic, unidirectional and quasi-transversely isotropic composites allows to have satisfactory images that well represent the damaged areas with the help of the delay-and-sum algorithm. Structural health monitoring (SHM) strategies based on ultrasonic guided waves are very promising regarding thin-walled lightweight structures. To study the performance of such systems, validated numerical analysis tools have to be used. For that procedure, a benchmark between two numerical methods will be presented. The first promising approach is the elastodynamic finite integration technique (EFIT). Miscellaneous research shows that its capability of capturing wave characteristics and interactions is advanced in various media and structures, including thin-walled composites. The second approach employs conventional shell-type finite elements following the Reissner–Mindlin theory for modelling layered composite structures. The advantage of using such finite element methods (FEM) is their high availability in general purpose simulation tools. As a reference model, the measurement data coming from the Open Guided Waves Project (OGW) was taken into account. The OGW dataset provides the experimental data of ultrasonic guided wave propagation in carbon fiber composite plates with an additional omega stringer. By using this contribution, this experiment was reproduced by simulation. Coatings play a crucial role in protecting ships and marine structures from corrosion and extending their service life. The reliability of these coatings depends on their proper maintenance, which in turn, relies on the application of reliable diagnostic techniques. Non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques are useful in material diagnostics, such as detecting debonded zone in water. However, the challenging access environment in the ocean, and the high attenuation characteristics of the material itself add too many technical challenges. In this paper, we propose a guided wave-based technique for characterizing the bonded zone state of coatings, which uses FFT analysis in different bonded zone states. Thin-walled structures, like aircraft skins and ship shells, are often several meters in size but only a few millimeters thick. By utilizing the laser ultrasonic Lamb wave detection method (LU-LDM), signals can be detected over long distances without physical contact. Additionally, this technology offers excellent flexibility in designing the measurement point distribution. The characteristics of LU-LDM are first analyzed in this review, specifically in terms of laser ultrasound and hardware configuration. Next, the methods are categorized based on three criteria: the quantity of collected wavefield data, the spectral domain, and the distribution of measurement points. The advantages and disadvantages of multiple methods are compared, and the suitable conditions for each method are summarized. Thirdly, we summarize four combined methods that balance detection efficiency and accuracy. Finally, several future development trends are suggested, and the current gaps and shortcomings in LU-LDM are highlighted. This review builds a comprehensive framework for LU-LDM for the first time, which is expected to serve as a technical reference for applying this technology in large, thin-walled structures. Most imaging methods based on ultrasonic Lamb waves in structural health monitoring requires reference signals, recorded in the intact state. This paper focuses on a novel baseline-free method for damage localization using Lamb waves based on a hyperbolic algorithm. This method employs a special array with a relatively small number of transducers and only one branch of the hyperbola. The novel symmetrical array was arranged on plate structures to eliminate the direct waves. The time difference between the received signals at symmetrical sensors was obtained from the damage-scattered waves. The sequence of time difference for constructing the hyperbolic trajectory was calculated by the cross-correlation method. Numerical simulation and experimental measurements were implemented on an aluminum plate with a through-thickness hole in the current state. The imaging results show that both the damages outside and inside the diamond-shaped arrays can be localized, and the positioning error reaches the maximum for the diamond-shaped array with the minimum size. In this study, the Convolution Neural Network (CNN) algorithm is applied for non-destructive evaluation of aluminum panels. A method of classifying the locations of defects is proposed by exciting an aluminum panel to generate ultrasonic Lamb waves, measuring data with a sensor array, and then deep learning the characteristics of 2D imaged, reflected waves from defects. For the purpose of a better performance, the optimal excitation location and sensor locations are investigated. To ensure the robustness of the training model and extract the feature effectively, experimental data are collected by slightly changing the excitation frequency and shifting the location of the defect. The high classification accuracy for each defect location can be achieved. It is found that the proposed algorithm is also successfully applied even when a bar is attached to the panel. This article proposes an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) for selectively improving the purity and amplitude of ultrasonic Lamb waves in non-ferromagnetic plates. The developed EMAT consists of a racetrack coil and a group of periodic permanent magnets (PPMs). Two-dimensional finite element simulations and experiments are implemented to analyze the working mechanism and performance of the PPM EMAT. Thanks to the specific design, the eddy currents increase with increasing wire density and the directions of the magnetic fields and Lorentz forces alternate according to the polarities of the magnet units. Wires laid uniformly beneath the magnets, and the gaps between adjacent magnets generate tangential and normal Lorentz forces, resulting in-plane (IP) and out-of-plane (OP) displacements, respectively. The constructive interference occurs when the wavelength of the generated Lamb wave is twice the spacing of the magnets, leading to large amplitudes of the targeted ultrasonic Lamb waves. Therefore, the PPM EMAT is capable of generating pure symmetric or antisymmetric mode Lamb waves at respective frequencies. The results prove that the developed PPM EMAT can generate pure either S0 or A0 mode Lamb waves at respective frequencies. The increase in wire width and wire density further increases the signal amplitudes. Compared with the case of conventional meander-line-coil (MLC) EMAT, the amplitudes of the A0 and S0 mode Lamb waves of our PPM EMAT are increased to 880% and 328%, respectively. A touch interface is an important technology used in many devices, including touch panels in smartphones. Many touch panels only detect the contact position. If devices can detect shear force in addition to the contact position, various touch interactions are possible. We propose a two-step recognition method for recognizing the pressing position and shear force using active acoustic sensing, which transmits acoustic signals to an object and recognizes the state of the object by analyzing its response. Specifically, we attach a contact speaker transmitting an ultrasonic sweep signal and a contact microphone receiving ultrasonic waves to a plate of gel. The propagation characteristics of ultrasonic waves differ due to changes in the shape of the gel caused by the user's actions on the gel. This system recognizes the pressing position and shear force on the basis of the difference in acoustic characteristics. An evaluation of our method involving a user-independent model confirmed that four pressing positions were recognized with an F1 score of 85.4%, and four shear-force directions were recognized with an F1 score of 69.4%. Early detection of defects inside a rail is of great significance to ensure the safety of rail transit. This work investigated the ability of ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) to detect internal defects in a rail head. First, the model of UGW propagation in rail, which has an irregular cross-section, was constructed based on the semi-analytical finite element (SAFE) method. Fundamental characteristics, such as wavenumber, phase or group velocity, and wave structure inside the rail, were then calculated. Following modal and vibration energy distribution analysis, a guided wave mode that is sensitive to transverse fissure (TF) defects was selected, and its excitation method was proposed. The effectiveness of the excitation method was confirmed by simulations performed in the ABAQUS software. According to the simulation data, the dispersion curve calculated by using the two-dimensional Fourier fast transform (2D-FFT) coincided well with that of the SAFE method. After that, the sensitivity of the selected mode to internal rail defects was validated and its ability to locate defects was also demonstrated. This paper demonstrates that a graded-index (GRIN) phononic lens, combined with a channel waveguide, can focus anti-symmetric Lamb waves for extraction by a detector with strong directional sensitivity. Guided ultrasonic wave inspection is commonly applied for structural health monitoring applications; however, obtaining sufficient signal amplitude is a challenge. In addition, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have strong directional sensitivity. We fabricate the GRIN structure, followed by a channel waveguide starting at the focal point, using a commercial 3D printer and mount it on a thin aluminum plate. We characterize the focusing of the A0 mode Lamb wave in the plate, traveling across the GRIN lens using 3D laser Doppler vibrometry. We also measure the extraction of focused energy using an FBG sensor, examining the optimal sensor bond location and bond length in the channel of the waveguide for maximum signal extraction. The measured amplification of the ultrasound signal is compared to theoretical predictions. The results demonstrate that significant amplification of the waveform is achieved and that selecting the location of the FBG sensor in the channel is critical to optimizing the amplification. On 15 January 2022, Tonga's Hunga Tonga‐Hunga Ha'apai (HTHH) volcano violently erupted, generating a tsunami that killed three people. Acoustic‐gravity waves propagated by the eruption and tsunami caused global complex ionospheric disturbances. In this paper, we study the nature of these perturbations from Global Navigation Satellite System observables over the southwestern Pacific. After processing data from 818 ground stations, we detect supersonic acoustic waves, Lamb waves, and tsunamis, with filtered magnitudes between 1 and 7 Total Electron Content units. Phase arrivals appear superpositioned up to ∼1,000 km from HTHH and are distinct by ∼2,200 km. Within ∼2,200 km, signals have an initial low‐frequency pulse that transitions to higher frequencies. We note the presence of a faster perturbation generated 1 hr post‐eruption which crosses the tsunami disturbance ∼3,000 km from HTHH, potentially contributing to premature land arrivals. Lastly, the arrival of tsunami‐generated disturbances coincides with deep‐ocean observations. Plain Language Summary: The 15 January 2022 volcanic eruption of Hunga Tonga‐Hunga Ha'apai and subsequent tsunamis sent powerful energy waves into the ionosphere (a layer of Earth's atmosphere that is deformed by energy emitted from events like volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, and large man‐made explosions). These waves can provide valuable information about different phases of the event, such as the powerful explosion, sound wave, and tsunami. Using Global Positioning Systems data, we measure these ionospheric signals over the southwestern Pacific Ocean to examine which phases of the event contributed to each ionospheric disturbance. We successfully detect all three event phases in the ionosphere and determine the distance at which these signals separate from one another. Furthermore, we validate our data by comparing tsunami signals in the ionosphere against direct ocean‐based observations of tsunami activity. Of particular note is our observation of a faster ionospheric signal that forms an hour after the eruption and catches up to the tsunami's disturbance. Our work supports the hypothesis that others have proposed in which high‐energy waves from the eruption escalated tsunami speeds and wave heights. This, in turn, supports the observation of early tsunami arrivals that were reported along many Pacific coastlines. In this paper, the propagation properties of ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) in different-thickness composites (i.e., 2, 4 and 9 mm) were critically assessed, and their effectiveness for damage detections and localisations under varying temperatures was demonstrated. A diagnostic film with phased-array lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers based on the ink-jet printing technique was used in the experiments. Initially, the dispersion curves for these composites were compared. Next, the effects of the composite thickness on the A0 and S0 mode amplitudes and the group velocity were investigated by active sensing. Next, the behaviours of UGWs under varying temperatures in different-thickness plates were also investigated. As protection for nuclear power plants is quite necessary, the nuclear fuel is sealed in zirconium alloy thin wall cladding. During service, fuel rods might be damaged caused by wall-thickness thinning, cladding corrosion and cracking, etc. This will cause the coolant to enter into the fuel rod, which may lead to the failure of the fuel assembly. However, current diagnostic methods have limitations due to the special structure of the fuel assembly and the underwater and radioactive environment. In this paper, a novel inspection method is proposed to recognize the failure of a fuel rod. The fuel rod failure can be detected based on the presence or absence of coolant inside the fuel rod by using an ultrasonic plate wave. The inspection model and process algorithm are proposed for in-service inspection. The relationship between signal and scanning position is established and analyzed. Both ultrasound field simulation and experiment have been carried out for validation. The corresponding results illustrate that the failed nuclear fuel rod of the whole fuel assembly (including the internal rods) can be effectively detected without the influence of the near-field region by using the proposed method. The 2D-FFT is described as a traditional method for signal processing and analysis. Due to the possibility to determine the time and frequency (t,f) domains, such a method has a wide application in various industrial fields. Using that method, the obtained results are presented in images only; thus, for the extraction of quantitative values of phase velocities, additional algorithms should be used. In this work, the 2D-FFT method is presented, which is based on peak detection of the spectrum magnitude at particular frequencies for obtaining the quantitative expressions. The radiofrequency signals of ULWs (ultrasonic Lamb waves) were used for the accuracy evaluation of the method. An uncertainty evaluation was conducted to guarantee the metrological traceability of measurement results and ensure that they are accurate and reliable. Mathematical and experimental verifications were conducted by using signals of Lamb waves propagating in the aluminum plate. The obtained mean relative error of 0.12% for the A0 mode (160 kHz) and 0.05% for the S0 mode (700 kHz) during the mathematical verification indicated that the proposed method is particularly suitable for evaluating the phase-velocity dispersion in clearly expressed dispersion zones. The uncertainty analysis showed that the plate thickness, the mathematical modeling, and the step of the scanner have a significant impact on the estimated uncertainty of the phase velocity for the A0 mode. Those components of uncertainty prevail and make about ~92% of the total standard uncertainty in a clearly expressed dispersion range. The S0 mode analysis in the non-dispersion zone indicates that the repeatability of velocity variations, fluctuations of the frequency of Lamb waves, and the scanning step of the scanner influence significantly the combined uncertainty and represent 98% of the total uncertainty. The present paper comprehensively investigates the complex interaction between ultrasonic guided waves and local structural discontinuities, such as damages, through highly sensitive features: so-called wave damage interaction coefficients (WDICs). These WDICs are unique for each structural discontinuity and depend solely on their characteristics for a given structure and condition. Thus, they can be particularly useful for advanced assessment of lightweight structures in the context of non-destructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. However, the practical application of WDICs entails significant difficulties due to their sensitivity and complex patterns. Therefore, this study attempts to guide researchers and practitioners in the estimation of WDICs from numerical simulations and physical experiments. Detailed investigations are made for an aluminum host plate modified by artificial structural discontinuities, i.e., surface-bonded steel sheets. The numerical simulations are performed to predict WDICs and study sensitivities using a sophisticated finite element model. The experimental setup uses piezoelectric transducers to excite guided waves in the host plate. A single scanning laser Doppler vibrometer measures the scattered guided waves caused by the surface-bonded steel sheets, and the resulting WDICs with possible influences are investigated. In both cases, the orientation and thickness of the attached steel sheets were varied to create 12 different damage scenarios. In general, the comparison between numerical and experimental WDICs show good agreement. This underpins the applicability of the general methodology for simulating and measuring WDICs over all scenarios. Furthermore, the WDIC scattering patterns reveal a clear dependency of the peaks in the back-scattered reflections for both the numerical and experimental amplitude coefficients on the damage orientation, basically following the law of reflection. However, some discrepancies between both studies were observed. Numerical sensitivity analysis identified the adhesive layer as one reason for such differences. Additionally, misalignment errors in the experimental measurements were also found to affect WDICs. Therefore, an improved baseline subtraction method is proposed, which clearly enhances the experimental WDICs. Finally, an experimental sensitivity study of WDICs for selected sensing radii revealed only a minor influence. All these investigations were made for the amplitude as well as the phase representation of WDICs. The ultrasonic Lamb wave detection principle can realize the noncontact measurement of liquid level in closed containers. When designing an ultrasonic Lamb wave sensor, it is vital to thoroughly study and select the optimal wedge size at the front of the sensor. In this paper, firstly, we select the best working mode of Lamb waves according to their propagation dispersion curve in aluminum alloy, and we obtain the best angle of wedge through experiments. Secondly, we study the impact of the size of the wedge block on the results, and we obtain the selection method of wedge block parameters. The evaluations show that, when the frequency–thickness product is 3 MHz·mm, the Lamb waves work in the A1 mode, and the experimental effect is the best. At this time, the incident angle of the ultrasonic wave is 27.39°. The wedge thickness should be designed to avoid the near-field area of the ultrasonic field, and we should choose the length as odd multiples of 1/4 wavelength. The rules obtained from the experiment can effectively select the best working mode for ultrasonic Lamb waves, while also providing a basis for the design of the wedge block size in a Lamb wave sensor. Data transmission through solid metallic channels is recommended in certain industries where no other options are proposed, such as nuclear, aerospace, and smart vehicles. In addition to the Faraday shielding effect of electromagnetic waves, another issue related to damage presence due to mechanical loads exists. Severe damage in the transmission channel leads to signal loss at the receiver. For this sake, ultrasonic guided waves, such as Lamb waves, maybe a good substitute since they can propagate through long distances in solid metallic structures. The scope of this work is to build a reliable, reproducible, and high data-rate wireless communication experimental platform, using ultrasonic guided waves, through healthy and damaged plates for industrial usage. The target is to compensate at first for the effect of dispersion, reverberation, scattering, and boundary reflections for the healthy plate. The novelty of this work falls within the performance analysis of the demodulation algorithm based on cross-correlation combined with binary phase-shift keying (BPSK), using a finite-element simulation through healthy and damaged plates with different depths of symmetrical and asymmetrical notches (SN and AN) and steps based on the bit error percentage (BEP). Furthermore, another contribution related to the impact of multiple reflections and mode conversions caused by symmetrical and asymmetrical steps and notches is taken into account. After this, numerical results are validated using an ultrasonic guided wave experimental platform. Results based on BEP analysis prove that the algorithm has successfully compensated for the effect of dispersion and boundary reflections for the healthy plate and multiple reflections and mode conversions for the damaged ones. Ultrasonic guided waves are extensively used for evaluation of thin structures in different applications. At low frequencies, the non-dispersive modes are often employed to simplify interpretation. However, the evaluation needs to be performed at high frequencies to reach high sensitivity and high probability of detection (POD). Using phased array technology for guided wave evaluation provides the advantages of multi-element phased array transducers and firing control of the elements. However, the optimal setup parameters based on the selected mode and frequency need to be used. In this study, an innovative experimental approach is presented to optimize the phased array setup parameters and enhance the guided wave signals. The received guided wave signals is then employed for detection of surface and in-depth defects, using phased array sectorial scanning. Using a 5 MHz PA transducer, guided wave modes is generated in a 0.63 mm thick steel plate. Along with the experiments, finite element simulation is performed to study the behavior of the propagated guided wave modes in the steel plate. Multi-point focusing technique is employed in sectorial scanning for detection of surface and in-depth defects. The experiments show the guided wave modes can be generated using commercially available phased array ultrasonic systems through setting up the phased array parameters. Classification and regression employing a simple Deep Neural Network (DNN) are investigated to perform touch localization on a tactile surface using ultrasonic guided waves. A robotic finger first simulates the touch action and captures the data to train a model. The model is then validated with data from experiments conducted with human fingers. The localization root mean square errors (RMSE) in time and frequency domains are presented. The proposed method provides satisfactory localization results for most human–machine interactions, with a mean error of 0.47 cm and standard deviation of 0.18 cm and a computing time of 0.44 ms. The classification approach is also adapted to identify touches on an access control keypad layout, which leads to an accuracy of 97% with a computing time of 0.28 ms. These results demonstrate that DNN-based methods are a viable alternative to signal processing-based approaches for accurate and robust touch localization using ultrasonic guided waves. Although Surface metalized carbon fibers have significant potential in electromagnetic wave absorption, achieving high-quality coatings and superior millimeter wave stealth performance, especially for passive millimeter waves, remains a considerable challenge. This article introduces a simple, innovative, and environmentally friendly method for preparing surface metalized CFs using ultrasonic technology, which enhances coating quality. The research indicates that the improvement is due to ultrasonic pre-treatment, which promotes the formation of Ni-O bonds between Ni2+ and the CF substrate. This strengthens the adhesion between the CF and the plating. Furthermore, it was found that surface metalized CFs exhibit superior millimeter wave stealth performance (both active and passive) compared to desized carbon fibers. The active millimeter wave attenuation of nickel-plated CFs can reach −14.44 dB. For passive millimeter wave radiometers, these fibers reduce the radiation temperature difference from 200.31 K to 10.79 K. Furthermore, the passive millimeter wave stealth performance of materials is related to the area density of aerosol materials, described by the equation: ΔT stealth =|T environment - T metal -k 2 [1-exp(-α ext S m)]|. The incipient defect is difficult to be identified by ultrasonic signal analysis. The nonlinear ultrasonic method based on the nonlinear Lamb wave principle is proposed by establishing a nonlinear Lamb wave ultrasonic inspection platform. The optimal Lamb wave parameters are obtained for the incipient fatigue material defects. The aluminum alloy board with 3 mm thickness under the different fatigue tensile cycles is tested. The nonlinear ultrasonic signals are analyzed to obtain second harmonic signals. The intelligent diagnosis method for incipient material degrade is proposed based on the Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT). The sequential probabilistic ratio test (SPRT) algorithm is carried out to classify and identify the second harmonics of four different fatigue damages. Stiffness anisotropy is a natural consequence of a fibrous structure of composite materials. The effect of anisotropy can be two-fold: it is highly desirable in some cases to assure a proper material response, while it might be even harmful for the applications based on "isotropic" composite materials. To provide a controllable flexibility in material architecture by corresponding fibre alignment, the methodologies for the precise non-destructive evaluation of elastic anisotropy and the fibre orientation are required. The tasks of monitoring the anisotropy and assessing the fibre fields in composites are analyzed by using the two types of ultrasonic waves suitable for regular plate-shaped composite profiles. In the plate wave approach, the effect of "dispersion of anisotropy" has been shown to make the wave velocity anisotropy to be a function of frequency. As a result, the in-plane velocity pattern measured at a certain frequency is affected by the difference in the wave structure, which activates different elasticity against the background of intrinsic material anisotropy. Phase velocity anisotropy and its frequency dependence provide a frequency variation of the beam steering angle for plate waves (dispersion of beam steering). In strongly anisotropic composite materials, the beam steering effect is shown to provide a strong focusing of ultrasonic energy (phonon focusing). For bulk shear waves, the orthotropic composite anisotropy causes the effect of acoustic birefringence. The birefringent acoustic field provides information on stiffness anisotropy which can be caused by internal stresses, texture, molecular or/and fibre orientation. On this basis, a simple experimental technique is developed and applied for mapping of fibre orientation in composite materials. Various modes of acoustic birefringence are analyzed and applied to assessing the fibre fields in injection moulding composites and to identify the fibre lay-ups in multiply materials. The Lamb waves are named one of the promising solutions for future wind turbine blade (WTB) failure prevention. The compliance with safety assurance of WTBs by detecting structural changes during the manufacture and performing their monitoring during the service life are effective tools for environmental sustainability. This work presents the basic characteristics of Lamb waves and highlights two main unusual limitations—the dispersion and an infinite number of modes—as a great challenge that complicates the application of such waves. This requires the investigation and development of new signal processing methods (SPMs) for conducting accuracy assessments according to the requirements of ISO 17025. The general principles for the accuracy assessment of the signal processing methods applied to evaluate the dispersion of Lamb waves are presented here, and a suitable procedure for estimation of errors and uncertainties is proposed. These should facilitate the verification analysis of any signal processing method used for the dispersion evaluation of Lamb waves. This information allows determining parameters that define the measurement reliability and facilitates the application and utilisation of the proposed methods and their choice. Extensional edge waves propagate along the edges of plates, with low attenuation in the propagation direction and amplitude decreasing rapidly (within one or two wavelengths) in the direction perpendicular to the plate edge. This makes them an ideal candidate for inspecting the edges of plate-like structures. Here, finite-element models and experiments are used to investigate the propagation and scattering of extensional edge waves in composite plates and application to damage detection is demonstrated. Piezoceramic transducers attached to the edge of a 4-mm-thick carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) plate were used to excite 140-kHz edge waves and damage detection demonstrated using two experimental configurations: pitch-catch and two-transducer pulse-echo. Damage due to edge-on impacts of 5 J and 10 J were detected in both configurations. A mass-addition damage model was used to investigate the effect of damage location. Detection was specific to damage within 33 mm (1.5 wavelengths) of the plate edge with propagation unaffected by features beyond that distance. The time of arrival of reflected signals in pulse-echo mode was accurately predicted using the edge-wave group velocity indicating that this configuration can be used for locating damage on edges. The localisation of edge waves means that they can specifically detect damage at the edges of structures, and attenuation measurements indicate that their useful propagation distance is large (5.5 m). Lamb-wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) has attracted extensive attention in recent years. This article aims to realize the functions of data communication, defect detection, and energy transmission through piezoelectric transducers. In this work, the ${S}_{{0}}$ mode at 500 kHz and the ${A}_{{0}}$ mode at 150 kHz are selected as the carrier waves and the optimized excitation frequencies are determined through analytical investigation and frequency sweeping experiments. The ${S}_{{0}}$ mode is used for data communication and defect inspection due to the high excitation frequency and low dispersion properties. A single piezoelectric sensing element acts as the transmitter and a nine-element piezoelectric transducer array (PTA) is the receiver. Their roles exchange in terms of energy transmission based on the ${A}_{{0}}$ mode. Simultaneous data communication and energy transmission are achieved based on the frequency division multiplexing (FDM) strategy. After performing a matched filter on the received signals, the digital data information can be recovered under the interference of the energy transmission signal. The synthetic aperture imaging technology (SAFT) is adopted for accurately locating defects on aluminum plates. In terms of energy transmission, a constructive interference performance is achieved by the transducer array with a transmitted power of 3.81 mW. Fatigue damage and micro-cracks growth have been proved to be closely related to the nonlinear effect of ultrasonic Lamb waves propagation in materials. In this paper, the relationship among fatigue life, length and width of micro-cracks, and the acoustic nonlinearity parameter was established. The variation of the acoustic nonlinearity parameter caused by fatigue damage was analyzed based on micro-cracks growth. Considering the multimodal nature of nonlinear Lamb waves, we selected the low-frequency mode pairs S0–s0 and S1–s2 to evaluate fatigue damage in 7075 aluminum alloy plates. Both FE simulations and experiments show that the mode pair S1–s2 is more suitable than S0–s0 for the assessment of fatigue damage. It was found that with increasing fatigue cycles, the relative acoustic nonlinearity parameter A2/A12 firstly increases because the micro-cracks length extends while the micro-cracks width does not change much. The relative acoustic nonlinearity parameter A2/A12 reaches its peak at about 60% of the fatigue life. Then the relative acoustic nonlinearity parameter A2/A12 decreases because of the rapid increase in the micro-cracks width. Advancements in the structural health monitoring (SHM) technology of composite materials are of paramount importance for early detection of critical damage. In this work, direct-write transducers (DWTs) were designed for the excitation and reception of selective ultrasonic guided waves and fabricated by spraying 25- $\mu \text{m}$ -thick piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TRFE)] coating with a comb-shaped electrode on carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates. The characteristics and performance of the ultrasonic DWTs were benchmarked with the state-of-the-art devices, discrete lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramic transducers surface-mounted on the same CFRP plates. The DWTs exhibited improved Lamb wave mode excitation (A0 or S0 mode) relative to the discrete PZT transducers. Moreover, high signal-to-noise ratio was obtained by effectively canceling other modes and enhancing the directivity with the periodic comb-shaped electrode design of the DWTs, despite the smaller signal amplitudes. The enhanced directivity overcompensates for lower amplitude attenuation, making DWT a good candidate for locally monitoring critical stress hot spot regions in the CFRP structure prone to early damage initiation. It is shown that pairing a DWT sensor with a discrete PZT actuator could further achieve balanced performance in both wave mode selection and signal amplitudes, making this combination really attractive for ultrasonic SHM. The special form of pipe-like structure provides the helical route for ultrasonic guided wave. Considering the pipe as a flattened plate but with periodical replications, the helical wave becomes intuitional and a corresponding imaging algorithm can be constructed. This work proposes the multihelical Lamb wave imaging method by utilizing the multiple arrival wavepackets which are denoted as different orders. The helical wave signal model is presented and the constant group velocity point is illustrated. The probabilistic reconstruction algorithm is combined with the separation and fusion of different helical routes. To verify the proposed scheme, finite element simulations and corresponding experiments are conducted. The cases of single-defect simulation and two-defect simulation indicate the successful and robust implementation of the imaging algorithm. The test on actual pipe damage is also investigated to show its capability in imaging an irregular defect. The comparison with imaging results from only first arrival demonstrates the advantage of multihelical wave imaging, including the better imaging resolution and higher localization accuracy. The focused signal obtained by the time-reversal or the cross-correlation techniques of ultrasonic guided waves in plates changes when the medium is subject to strain, which can be used to monitor the medium strain level. In this paper, the sensitivity to strain of cross-correlated signals is enhanced by a post-processing filtering procedure aiming to preserve only strain-sensitive spectrum components. Two different strategies were adopted, based on the phase of either the Fourier transform or the short-time Fourier transform. Both use prior knowledge of the system impulse response at some strain level. The technique was evaluated in an aluminum plate, effectively providing up to twice higher sensitivity to strain. The sensitivity increase depends on a phase threshold parameter used in the filtering process. Its performance was assessed based on the sensitivity gain, the loss of energy concentration capability, and the value of the foreknown strain. Signals synthesized with the time–frequency representation, through the short-time Fourier transform, provided a better tradeoff between sensitivity gain and loss of energy concentration. In an adhesively bonded structure, utilizing the adhesive itself for monitoring the joint integrity can be beneficial in reduction of labor, time, and potential human errors while avoiding problems associated with introduction of a foreign sensor component. This work started from the examination of effective piezoelectricity of commercial structural adhesives/sealants, and five of them were found to possess effective piezoelectric property, with effective piezoelectric coefficient ${d}_{{33}}$ from −0.11 to −1.77 pm/V depending on frequency under substrate clamping condition. With stable piezoelectric response at least up to megahertz, an epoxy adhesive with inorganic filler was selected for structural health monitoring (SHM) feasibility demonstration via generating or sensing guided ultrasonic Lamb waves. The presence of disbond in the adhesive joint is detectable by comparing the Lamb waves signal with a reference baseline signal associated with an intact structure. Ultrasonic guided wave (UGW) has shown great potential in the field of structural health monitoring of rail tracks due to its long-range capability and full cross section coverage. However, the practical application of UGW has been hindered by the complicated signal interpretation because of the natures of multiple modes and dispersion. Therefore, it is desirable that the effective UGW modes with high excitability and least dispersion can be identified and extracted for practical applications. In this paper, a numerical study on the guided wave propagation was carried out on a standard rail with 56E1 profile. Firstly, Floquet-Bloch theory was applied to obtain the dispersion curves of guided wave in a rail. Then, a 3D FE model was built to investigate the UGW propagation along the rail within the frequency range of 0–120 kHz. Wavenumber-frequency analysis method was applied to decompose and identify the propagating UGW modes. With a carefully designed 2D bandpass filter, a specific mode W0 was extracted in the wavenumber-frequency domain. Finally, a frequency band sweep technique was also proposed to get the optimal frequency band to achieve a pure and least-dispersive UGW mode along the rail web.
