Soil mineralogy and texture are directly related to soil carbon due to the physical properties of the clay surface. Traditional techniques for quantifying carbon in soil are time-consuming and expensive, making large-scale quantification for mapping unfeasible. The alternative is the use of soil sensors, such as diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), an economical, fast, and accurate technique for predicting carbon stocks. In this sense, this study aimed to (a) investigate the relationship of C with different soil mineralogical, chemical, and physical attributes for different geological and geomorphological compartments; (b) understand which spectral bands are most important for estimating C content; (c) estimate C content from diffuse reflectance spectroscopy using different mathematical techniques and indicate which one is the best for tropical soil conditions; and (d) map C contents in detail. The study area was the Western Plateau of São Paulo (WPSP), which covers approximately 13 million hectares (~ 48% of the State of São Paulo, Brazil). A total of 265 samples were collected in this area. The attributes clay, silt, sand, crystalline and non-crystalline iron, base saturation, soil density, total pore volume, total C, C stock, kaolinite/(kaolinite + gibbsite) and hematite/(hematite + goethite), hematite and goethite contents, and spectral curves were evaluated. The spectra were recorded at 0.5-nm intervals, with an integration time of 2.43 nm s−1 over the 350 to 2500-nm range (350–800 nm—visible—VIS and 801–2500 nm—near-infrared—NIR). The data were subjected to descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation, stepwise analysis, and cluster grouping for characterization purposes; partial least squares regression (PLSR) and random forest (RF) for estimation purposes; and geostatistics analysis for creation of spatial maps. Our results indicate that the highest C contents are associated with more clayey soils, oxidic mineralogy, higher total pore volume, and lower soil density in highly dissected basalt compartments. The random forest algorithm associated with the Vis–NIR spectral range is more efficient for estimating and mapping C contents. This suggests that integrating diffuse reflectance spectroscopy with machine learning techniques holds promise for shaping public policies related to land use, mitigating CO2 emissions, and facilitating the implementation of carbon credit policies in a rapid and economically efficient manner. The availability of nitrogen in the soil is influenced by several factors associated with the forms and characteristics of organic nitrogen present in it, as well as by any property that impacts its microbiological and biochemical activity. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the combined effect of manure fertilization, soil type, and incubation time on soil N forms and availability. The experiment was conducted in a factorial scheme (2 soils × with (20 Mg ha−1) or without manure × 4 incubation times (15, 45, 90, and 180 days)). The levels of organic matter and fractions of organic N and mineral N were evaluated. Fertilization increased the organic matter and mineral N content in both soils, but the effect of fertilization on the organic N fractions was different depending on the type of soil. In the clayey soil, there was an accumulation of nitrogen in the unidentified hydrolysable fraction, whereas, in the sandy soil, the greatest increase occurred in the hydrolysable ammonium fraction. The application of manure generated different effects on the dynamics of N forms, depending on the type of soil. Advanced hyperspectral remote sensing technology can identify various clay minerals in the soil. The improved spectral and spatial resolution of the airborne hyperspectral sensor can be used for a better interpretation of clay mineral abundance in the soil. This research utilizes the high-resolution image data acquired from Advanced Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer Next Generation (AVIRIS-NG) on an airborne platform to map the abundance of clay minerals in the Udaipur region of Rajasthan (24° 34′ 16.5720′' N, 73° 41′ 29.5584′' E). The representative soil samples for various soil clay minerals, e.g., kaolinite, montmorillonite, and illite, were classified from AVIRIS-NG data using a spectral feature fitting algorithm. A total of thirty sites were selected from agricultural and wastelands for soil sample collection. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of representative soil samples was carried out to find the percentage and type of clay minerals present. Regression analysis between absorption peak depth values estimated from the hyperspectral image of the sampling sites in the spectral region from 2205 to 2214 nm and corresponding clay content value showed a significant relationship. The regression line obtained for the known pixels was used to prepare the mineral abundance map over the study area. Clay minerals in soils and rocks exhibit large volume change upon interaction with water and this behavior becomes even more complex when the strata are being stressed by the engineering and environmental loads. Therefore, a realistic prediction of the hydro-mechanical behavior of the clay-bearing strata is always a challenge due to their coupled swelling-mechanical response in the cases of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering problems, nuclear waste storage in clay-bearing rock repositories, shale gas extraction, and other uses of clay in the manufacturing industry. All the existing behavior models have restricted applications in the engineering and other fields of practice mainly due to the partial consideration of the structure and fabric of clay-bearing strata in the model formulation. In this study, a hydro-mechanical behavior model has been formulated using the parameters acquired from the molecular-level simulations and modeling of the volume change and stress–strain behavior of the clay-bearing structure. The Molecular Mechanics and Molecular Dynamic simulations were performed on the natural structure of the clay-bearing strata formulated using Monte Carlo technique. The mathematical model, developed from the simulation results, can predict the overall hydro-mechanical behavior of clay-bearing strata for all possible combinations of clay minerals, non-clay minerals, salts causing cementation of the soil/rock structure, confining pressures, and the induced strain levels. The developed model has successfully been validated through laboratory and field testing on the clay-bearing strata in both the elastic and elasto-plastic regions of the stress–strain behavior and also from the data of two (02) swelling clays (MX-80 and FEBEX Bentonite) from the existing literature, supporting the universal nature of the developed behavior model. This document is a discussion of a research paper titled "Probing the Stochastic Unconfined Compressive Strength of Lime–RHA Mix Treated Clayey Soil." The paper explores the use of lime and rice husk ash as binders to stabilize clayey soil. The identification of clay soils is of great importance for the construction industry. Indeed, this type of soil presents an economic interest related to the exploitation of its clayey materials. Furthermore, the assessment of the potential for differential ground movement through the dryness of the soils and their rehydration is also an important issue to identify in order to reduce the swelling-shrinking hazard. The region of Mers El Kébir located in northwest Algeria, is at risk of this phenomenon because it is known for its marly clay compositions. Mapping this type of soil using satellite imagery offers an alternative to the engineering practice of establishing soil mineralogy, based on X-ray diffraction analysis, which is expensive and time-consuming. The objective of this research is to use ASTER satellite images to map different clay minerals. This analysis is based on remote sensing of spectral signatures corresponding to illite, kaolinite, and montmorillonite. The study of satellite images of the Mers El Kébir region validates the methodology developed, which could be used to help in the development and planning of new infrastructures adapted to the different types of soil. Featured Application: We found that in the areas with high seasonal rainfall, to stabilize clay soils, if the amount of Montmorillonite mineral is greater than a certain amount (for example, in this study, 45%), with any amount of chemical additives, they do not maintain their stability and collapse. Conversely, soils containing certain amounts of Illite and Kaolinite minerals with the smallest amount of chemical additives have the best performance. Although the interaction between clay minerals and lime is the most effective factor in lime stabilization techniques, it has not been deeply evaluated. This research study investigated the microstructural characteristics of lime-stabilized Bentonite and Kaolin soils using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses. To consider the variation in clay mineralogy, these soils were mixed at varied ratios, stabilized, and then subjected to a durability process. The microstructural findings showed that the pozzolanic reactions with lime did not occur or occurred at a low level for Bentonite soil. However, they occurred at a very high level for Kaolin soil. The durability test confirmed the microstructural results and showed that the samples in which Bentonite soil had a share of 40 to 100% by dry weight of the soil did not last with any percent of lime. When the Kaolin soil content reached 100% by dry weight of the soil, the specimens lasted in the best possible way, even with 4% of the lime. This study concluded that the determination of optimum lime content based on the amounts and types of soil clay minerals is an important innovation for geotechnical projects and may be very cost-effective. Soil properties have an important role in the movement of minerals in the environment. Therefore, the study of mineral adsorption and soil properties can help solve environmental pollution problems. In the present work, batch adsorption of zinc and lead was studied on some Algerian soils (clay soil, sandy loam soil, and sandy soil), as a function of contact time, pH, metal concentration and physicochemical properties. The results showed the metal adsorption amount depends on soil pH and initial ion concentration, soil type, temperature, exchange capacity, and metal hydrolysis. Ionic strength and organic matter content investigation indicate that, clay soil presents greater adsorption of both metals than the two other soils. The metal ions' adsorption decreases with decreasing pH and increasing ionic strength. The results showed that the adsorption amount of lead is better than that of zinc in all studied samples. The equilibrium data good fit well with Langmuir and Freundlich's models. The tested kinetic models showed that soil adsorption of these metals are biphasic and diffusioncontrolled process. Soil is continuously excavated for development activities in urban and rural areas and treated as waste. This study investigates the characteristics of urban soils excavated from earthworks of buildings in the Brittany region of France for their perspective reuse in earthen construction materials to valorize soil waste and provide a sustainable building material locally. Excavated soil from earthwork activities was taken from the Brittany region of France from three different locations. Soil suitability for compressed earth blocks was investigated based on their granulometry, consistency limits, and mineralogy. Finally, compressed earth blocks with dimensions of 4 × 4 × 16 cm3 were manufactured with different formulations and compacted dynamically. Flexural and compressive strength tests were performed on bricks to observe their mechanical behavior. Grain size analysis of soil samples shows that the percentage of clay in the landfill stockpile of excavated soils varies between 13% and 16%, while at some local sites, the percentage of clay goes up to 57%. The grain size of soils varies from the recommended zone. The plasticity of soil samples ranges from 17.3% to 20.4%. The plasticity index and clay content of the soil show that these soils are inactive clays with a lesser possibility of swelling and shrinkage. Mineralogical analysis of soil shows the absence of water-sensitive clay minerals, while quartz, kaolinite, and illite are major minerals present in soils. Linear shrinkage in bricks ranges from 0.6% to 2.2% and is considerably higher for clayey soils. Mechanical testing of earth bricks shows that the compressive strength of earth blocks ranges from 0.92 MPa to 2.22 MPa while the flexural strength ranges from 0.25 to 0.74 MPa. A mixture of sandy and clayey soils shows good strength due to improved granulometry. Earth bricks with soils from some stockpiles, excavation sites, and soil mixture show compressive strength higher than 1 MPa, which is recommended strength by international standards, and offer the opportunity to produce sustainable building materials locally. The accurate prediction of swelling deformation and(or) swelling pressure if confined for expansive soils is essential for a better design and construction of a geotechnical structure that is built on or in an expansive soil. In this paper, we proposed a new method to quantify the swelling strain and(or) swelling pressure of expansive soils by considering the mineralogical components and their different swelling properties. The proposed multi-component model employs a tandem combination of different sub-molecular oedometers for different minerals, and the total swelling strain of soil was calculated by integrating the swelling strain of each mineral. A linear relationship between potential energy and swelling strain is identified based on molecular dynamics' simulation, which is then incorporated into the diffuse double-layer theory to calculate the relationship between confining pressure and swelling strain for each mineral. The numerical model was then validated by experimental results from the literature, which shows a good agreement with the experimental data in the literature. The use of plant-based compost has been increasing within environmentally sustainable crop systems, as its incorporation into soil improves its structure and implies a slow release of nutrients to the plants. Due to the limited literature regarding compost application to industrial crops and the important role of the soil type, research was conducted on the industrial tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) hybrid Coronel F1 at the Department of Agricultural Sciences of Naples, University Federico II, in 2019 and 2020. The study was based on the factorial combination of three fertilization types (compost, compost + mineral, and mineral) and three soil textures (clayey, loamy, and sandy). The highest crop yield was observed in loamy soil with mineral fertilization (+12.7% compared to clayey and loamy soils; +12.1% and +60.3% compared to compost + mineral and compost, respectively). Compost application increased plant dry weight (+23% compared to mineral fertilization), while sandy soil had a lower dry residue (−3%). The combination of loamy soil and compost exhibited the highest fruit dry matter percentage (approximately 7%). These findings suggest that applying compost to industrial tomato plants, alone or with mineral fertilizers, improves fruit quality and promotes crop system sustainability, and the optimal strategy depends on the target crop and soil type. Parent material and topography are among the soil-forming factors that affect soil evolution by influencing different parameters. This study was conducted to compare the effect of marl and calcareous parent materials in different slope positions, including the summit, shoulder, foot-, and toe-slopes on soil clay mineralogy in the Karoon 3 Basin, east of Khuzestan Province. Four soil profiles in each of the two topo-sequences were dug. They were sampled based on their genetic horizons and some physical, chemical properties, and clay mineralogy were measured. The results showed that the type and abundance of clay minerals identified for both parent materials were more affected by topo-sequence position. The composition of minerals identified in the topo-sequence with marl parent materials included kaolinite, palygorskite, smectite, chlorite, mica, and quartz, and in the topo-sequence with calcareous parent materials, palygorskite, smectite, chlorite, mica minerals, and quartz, and most of the identified minerals were also observed in all positions in the C horizon. However, in marl parent materials kaolinite, and calcareous parent materials, smectite seems to have been formed pedogenically. The impact of clay mineralogy on engineering properties relevant to road design, such as the strength and stiffness of road materials, has recently been the subject of intensive investigations, aiming at providing indirect measures of soil performance out of mineralogical data. This study deals with the effects of clay minerals on soil strength, expressed in terms of California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), and stiffness, represented by the constrained modulus, which are commonly used as engineering properties for pavement materials. The study is performed on six clayey soils (S1-S6) of different geographic origins. Five of the six soils are highly plastic, potentially swelling, and one is kaolinitic soil. The mineralogical characteristics of the samples were analyzed through X-ray diffraction (XRD). The testing program included Atterberg limits, sieve analysis, CBR, UCS, and consolidation tests. The measured properties of the samples were compared in light of the mineralogical composition of the soils. The investigation showed that the kaolinite mineral is significantly more effective than the montmorillonite in reducing the plasticity of the clays. Higher strength indicators (CBR and UCS) were observed for samples with high kaolinite content (S4, S5, and S6). Cropland soils are key systems in global carbon budgets due to their high carbon-sequestration potential. It is widely accepted that clays are one of the soil components that have a significant effect on the stabilisation of soil organic carbon (SOC), owing to its surface interactions with organic molecules. However, the identification of the direct effects of clays on SOC stabilization is complicated, mainly due to the difficulty of accurately characterizing the mineralogy of clays, especially phyllosilicates. In this study, the relationships between soil phyllosilicates and functional SOC pools in woodlands and comparable olive groves, under two contrasting management systems (bare soils versus soil under cover crops) and parent materials (calcareous and siliceous), were explored. The total mineralogy of soil and clay fractions and the soil-clay assemblages were analysed through the decomposition of X-ray diffraction patterns, and were then related to four SOC pools. Total and unprotected SOC was higher in olive groves under cover crops, and this was true independent of the parent material, proving the importance of herbaceous covers in SOC sequestration in woody crops. Some significant correlations between clay minerals and SOC fractions were found. Interestingly, mixed-layer content was correlated with the biochemically protected SOC fraction (r = 0.810, p < 0.05), and this was so even when the partial correlation coefficient was calculated (r = 0.761, p < 0.05). According to the partial correlation networks (PCN), four separated clusters of variables were obtained, which joined into only one at fdr < 0.25. The PCNs supported the direct correlation between mixed-layer content, especially those rich in smectite, and the biochemically protected SOC fraction, suggesting that smectite layers may stabilize organic molecules. Since potassium enrichment is higher in the rooted layers of woodland and soils under cover crops, and this increase is related to the collapse of swelling layers, these soils were poorer in smectite phases than the bare soils. Featured Application: This study attempts to identify optimal dosage ranges of lime and PG for maximizing the strength performance of stabilized expansive soils. The study involved the utilization of an industrial waste product, Phosphogypsum (PG) as an additive to lime for the stabilization of soil. Three lime dosages, viz. initial consumption of lime (ICL), optimum lime content (OLC) and less than ICL (LICL) were adopted for stabilizing the soil. The study investigated the stress-strain characteristics of soil composites stabilized with these three lime contents modified with optimum dosages of PG. Mineralogical studies were performed on the spent samples used for a series of determinations of unconfined compression strength tests with various combinations of lime and optimum PG content. The addition of an optimum dosage of PG resulted in an early strength gain of 8.8%, 14.1% and 13.9% and a delayed strength gain of 9.9%, 19% and 19.7% for 3%, 5.5% and 7% for the lime-stabilized soil, respectively. It was found that the addition of PG to the lime resulted in enhanced stiffness, residual strength and reduced brittleness due to the PG amendment of the stabilization reactions. However, in terms of the overall improvement of soil properties, the most favorable benefit was obtained by optimal PG modification of ICL rather than OLC. Microanalysis of the X-ray diffraction scatter also supported the results revealed through stress-strain characteristics. ICL with its optimal PG dosage showed a better progression of pozzolanic reactions when compared to the other two in terms of reduction of peaks of soil minerals and increase in peaks of CSH. Processes of soil restoration in anthropogenically disturbed soils is an urgent topic in modern ecology and nature management. Being mediator between mineral soil composition and plant vegetation, soil microbial community is important factor of soil restoration processes. Analysis of main soil nutrition components followed by 16S amplicon sequencing are sufficient methods for primary analysis of novel locations. Here is the primary analysis in a novel location in Northwest Europe (Russia). Main nutrition parameters (pH, P, Na and NH4+) and 16S rDNA Illumina amplicons were explored in abandoned soils from sandy pit quarry (2 sites) and refractory clay mining dumps (4 sites). Microbial communities of mature soils and dumps are variable and different in terms both nutritional and microbial components. pH, N and TOC are strong predictors for microbial composition. Dumps of refractory clays pQ_2 are non-developed soils, highly acidic and form specific microbial community. Differences between dumps and mature soils in both pre-quaternary and quaternary soils are connected with specific bacterial taxa. Groundwater zone formation in the soil layers of a headwater catchment is an important factor that controls volumetric and chemical changes in streamflow; it also induces shallow landslides. Previous studies have suggested that the groundwater zone in soil layers generally forms transiently atop low-permeability layers in response to rainfall. This study focused on an unchanneled hollow in a serpentine headwater catchment, where a semi-perennial to perennial groundwater zone was observed in thin organic soil layers (OSLs) overlying thick clay mineral soil layers (CMLs), even during dry periods. We conducted detailed observations in this catchment to clarify the formation processes of the semi-perennial to perennial groundwater zone. The results showed that water is supplied from the CMLs to the OSLs as unsaturated upward flow in areas where the OSLs are dry. This water then accumulates in the downslope hollow, which sustains the groundwater zone in the OSLs during dry periods. The frequent and long-term occurrence of upward flow can be attributed to differences in the hydraulic properties of OSLs and CMLs. This process prevents the OSLs in the hollow from drying, presumably causes volumetric and chemical changes in streamflow, and reduces the stability of OSLs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mineralogy of fine soils such as clays has always posed problems and remains an uncontrollable phenomenon in the presence of water and causes destructible damage throughout the world. In order to minimize the cost of implementation, it is necessary to find practical and less expensive solutions to ensure the stabilization of these soils by the valorisation of local waste available in nature. This article concerns an experimental study on the treatment of reconstituted soil by the addition of paper ash of different proportions on a set of standardized tests, the preliminary results show that the paper ash to the clay soil improves its swelling potential, its plasticity, its compaction characteristics, and its shear strength parameters. Microscopic mechanisms have played a central role during development of different natural sciences and should be the key to construct new foundations for soil science. Abundant surface charge is probably the most important characteristic for soil systems and critical to soil interfacial processes. In this perspective, we discussed (1) more than ten techniques to determine surface charge, (2) different classical theories used to interpret soil interfacial processes and (3) recent progresses on microscopic mechanisms of soil interfacial processes focusing on new theories, ion exchange, clay aggregation, aggregates stability and water infiltration. It manifested that non-classical polarization can account for these microscopic mechanisms, and an updated understanding in this regard was offered. This paper describes key research on expansive soils and the methods employed to characterize them; fallacies in the current characterization of expansive soils are also explained. Novel swell characterization models that account for hydro, chemical, and mechanical behaviors of soils are introduced and used to demonstrate in case studies to improve expansive soil stabilization practices. The first two case studies present the results of expansive soils stabilized by incorporating clay mineralogy and soluble soil sulfate measurements. An innovative design method for successful stabilization of expansive soil is introduced in the first case study, which incorporated both basic clay mineralogy and unsaturated soil behaviors as well as performance-based durability studies. Sulfate soil stabilization works on medium-to-high sulfate soils, including rigorous laboratory and field validation studies, are presented in the second case study. The third case study, which involves a steep earthen embankment built with expansive clayey soils and experiencing recurring surficial slope failures and maintenance issues, is also discussed. Forensic studies explaining the causes of slope failures and their mitigation methods are also included. All case studies reveal the need for detailed data about soil chemistry, including clay mineralogy and sulfate studies, to improve the current field stabilization and infrastructure design on expansive soils. The last section summarizes recent innovations for better health monitoring and management of civil infrastructure built on expansive soils using unmanned aerial vehicle platforms and visualization tools, which will be valuable for validating the application of new materials, designs, and construction processes. Texture is one of the most important soil properties that knowledge of the spatial distribution is essential for land-use planning and other activities related to agriculture and environment protection. So, this study was performed to supply the soil texture spatial distribution using standardized spectral reflectance (ZPC1) index of Landsat 8 satellite images in the northwest of Iran. The soil sampling was performed using a random method in 145 points. Mineral soil particles including clay, silt, and sand were determined, and soil texture was calculated. In this study, Landsat 8 satellite images were used to interpolate the soil texture spatial distribution. In the first step, the principal component analysis (PCA) was obtained. Then, PCA1 was standardized using a z-score (ZPC1), and regression techniques were used to create proper relationships between ZPC1 and the primary soil particles. Then, spatial distribution of soil particles was used to create a spatially distributed map of the soil textural classes. The results showed that the standardization of the first component reduced the standard deviation of PCA1 from 23.6 to 10.8. The results of comparing ZPC1 with soil mineral components showed that with increasing the amounts of soil clay and sand, the ZPC1 value decreases and increases, respectively. The results showed that the ranges of the spatial distribution of clay and sand were similar to the laboratory-measured amounts. The results of texture class prediction using the soil texture triangle showed that the amount of similarity between the measured and predicted classes was 53.79%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)]-contaminated soils have introduced a serious problem in China. Cr(VI) is hazardous to both the environment and public health and may degrade the engineering properties of soils. Accordingly, the effects of Cr(VI) on the physicochemical, mechanical, and microstructure properties of Chinese clay were investigated in this study. Results show that Cr(VI) had a considerable negative effect on the physicochemical, mechanical, and microstructure properties of soil. Specifically, Cr(VI) changed the physicochemical properties and degraded the mechanical properties of soil, led to the aggregation of soil particles, and created a large void space. Cr(VI) also changed the mineral composition of the soil and converted clay minerals into calcite. Zinc (Zn) deficiency is a widespread nutritional problem in human populations, especially in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The Zn concentration of crops consumed depends in part on the Zn status of the soil. Improved understanding of factors controlling the phyto-availability of Zn in soils can contribute to potential agronomic interventions to tackle Zn deficiency, but many soil types in SSA are poorly studied. Soil samples (n=475) were collected from a large part of the Amhara Region of Ethiopia, where there is widespread Zn deficiency. Zinc status was quantified by measuring several fractions, including the pseudo-total (aqua regia digestion; Zn Tot), available (DTPA (diethylenetriamine pentaacetate) extractable; Zn DTPA), soluble (dissolved in 0.01 M Ca(NO3); Zn Soln) and isotopically exchangeable Zn, using the enriched stable Zn isotope 70Zn (Zn E). Soil geochemical properties were assessed for their influence on Zn lability and solubility. A parameterized geochemical assemblage model (Windermere Humic Aqueous Model – WHAM) was also employed to predict the solid phase fractionation of Zn in tropical soils rather than using sequential chemical extractions. Zn Tot ranged from 14.1 to 291 mg kg -1 (median = 100 mg kg -1), whereas Zn DTPA in the majority of soil samples was less than 0.5 mg kg -1 , indicating widespread phyto-available Zn deficiency in these soils. The labile fraction of Zn in soil (Zn E as % Zn Tot) was low, with median and mean values of 4.7 % and 8.0 %, respectively. Labile Zn partitioning between the solid and the solution phases of soil was highly pH dependent, where 94 % of the variation in the partitioning coefficient of 70Zn was explained by soil pH. Similarly, 86 % of the variation in Zn Soln was explained by soil pH. Zinc distribution between adsorbed Zn E and Zn Soln was controlled by pH. Notably, Zn isotopic exchangeability increased with soil pH. This contrasts with literature on contaminated and urban soils and may arise from covarying factors, such as contrasting soil clay mineralogy across the pH range of the soils used in the current study. Pb can be stabilized in soil as Pb-P mineral. The aims of this study were to access the distribution of Pb in organic and mineral fractions of contrasting texture of soil Pb-contaminated and remediated with P and Cl and to evaluate the stability of chloropyromorphite in these soils. A clay loam Oxisol (sandstone) and a clayey Ultisol (basalt) were used in a factorial experiment, with three replications: two soils, two Pb contamination levels, two soil pH values, and four P doses. The Pb concentrations were determined in seven soil phases. Release kinetics of Pb were performed with 0.1 mol L−1 pH 2.5 citric acid. The transfer of soil Pb to chloropyromorphite was dependent on the level of contamination in the clay loam Oxisol. In the lowest P dose (molar ratios P:Pb 3:5), the main source was the Pb complexed in the organic matter and in the highest P dose (molar ratios P:Pb 12:5) was the Pb adsorbed by inner sphere in gibbsite and kaolinite. The release of Pb in the citric acid was dependent on the texture and mineralogy of the soils. Pb recovery applied to the clay loam Oxisol was around 100% (biphasic kinetic), while for the clayey Ultisol, the recovery ranged from 43 to 52% (single-phase kinetic). Remediation of Pb-contaminated soils with P and Cl is more efficient in clayey and oxidic soils since chloropyromorphite formation is faster and its solubilization is slower, an important combination in environmental terms. The solid product of sewage sludge (SS) pyrolysis, called SS biochar (SSB), is rich in carbon and nutrients, such as phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), calcium (Ca), and zinc (Zn). However, SSB has a low potassium (K) concentration because it is released with water during the final stage of sewage treatment. The enrichment of SSB with mineral sources of K can solve the low supply of K in SSB and produce an organomineral fertilizer with a slow release of K. However, the dynamics of K release from these enriched fertilizers in different soil types remain unclear. This study investigated the dynamics of K release from biochar-based fertilizer (BBF) in the form of pellets and granules in two soil types (clayey and sandy) and natural silica. An incubation experiment was conducted for 60 days, and replicates were evaluated at prescribed time intervals. After the incubation period, the levels of K available in the solid fraction were determined, and the dynamics of K release were evaluated using four nonlinear regression models. BBFs achieved a slower release of K than the mineral KCl. The dynamics of K release were affected by the physical form of BBF, such that the pelleted BBF exhibited the slowest K release. Furthermore, regarding the concentration detected in the solid phase, the total released was highest in clayey soil, followed by sandy soil and natural silica. The enriched BBFs reduced K release throughout the experimental period, behaving as slow-release fertilizers with the potential to optimize K uptake by plants throughout the growth cycle. Further studies are required to evaluate K leaching and retention in the soil profile when biochar-based fertilizers are applied. Tylosin (Tyl) is a veterinary antibiotic commonly used in swine and poultry production. Due to metabolic inefficiencies, it enters the environment through manure applications. Ion exchange is an important retention mechanism for Tyl, particularly for smectite clay. The objectives of this study are to characterize the exchange interactions of Tyl with common soil cations in subsoil horizons that contain smectite and to investigate the interactions using in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Adsorbed Tyl in pH neutral, smectitic subsoil horizons is divided into exchangeable and nonexchangeable forms. The percentage of adsorbed Tyl that is exchangeable varies from 36% to 43% when Na+ is the competing cation, and from 57% to 66% when Ca2+ competes. In NaX-TylX binary exchange systems, neither Na+ nor Tyl+ is preferred by the clay exchange phase, and the Vanselow selectivity coefficients (K V) for the NaX→TylX exchange reaction range between 0.79 and 1.41. In the CaX 2 -TylX systems, Tyl+ is preferred by the clay exchange phase when the equivalent fraction of TylX (E TylX) is less than 0.4. The K V values for the CaX 2 →TylX exchange reaction are at a maximum at the lowest E TylX values, with 17.6 < K V < 58.1, then decrease with increasing E TylX to 1.34 < K V < 6.28. Adsorbed Tyl masks the CEC of the soil clays; the effect is greatest in systems that are initially Tyl-saturated, and is attributed to the steric effects of the large Tyl molecule. Despite the great importance of potassium applied as a fertilizer in the orange orchards, no information is currently available regarding the rate of potassium release from rhizosphere and the bulk soils of such trees. The objectives of this study were to investigate the weathering of micaceous minerals and their non-exchangeable K release and also, to examine the status of different forms of K in the rhizosphere and bulk soils of orange orchards with different ages in Darab, Fars Province. Samples were, accordingly, taken from the rhizosphere and bulk soils of orange orchards with the ages of 5, 10 and 20 years; also, virgin soils (control) were obtained from three soil depths including 0-30, 30-60, and 60-100 cm. Water soluble, exchangeable and nonexchangeable K, and the clay mineralogy of the soils were determined. The results demonstrated that the concentration of soluble and exchangeable K in the cultivated soils was less than that in the control soil and that the concentration of nonexchangeable K in the soils of 20-year-old orchards was less, than that in other soils. Soluble and exchangeable K values decreased with depth in all soils. Clay mineralogy investigation also showed that the quantity of illite decreased and that of smectite and illite-smectite increased as the age of orange trees was raised. With increasing the age of orange trees and root development, more potassium could be taken up from soil and more changes occurred in the soil minerals. In order to avoid a very high decline in the reserved K in the soils under orange trees, particularly in the orchards with older trees, K fertilization has to be taken more seriously based on the soil testing results. A brief review of world experience in mapping the mineralogical composition of soils is given; in particular, the results gained in Great Britain (England and Wales), Canada, the United States, Australia, Hungary, the former Soviet Union, and Russia are analyzed. In the majority of countries, the composition of clay minerals was the only object of mapping, except for the United States, for which the data on the mineral composition of coarse fractions were included. This publication is aimed at the analysis of the experience in mapping the mineralogical composition of soils in Moldova—a small country with steppe and forest-steppe landscapes—and elucidates the achievements and problems in this area. Unlike other countries, where the associations of clay mineral were the object of mapping, the specific mineralogical composition of soils and parent materials in Moldova, together with the development and application of appropriate analytical methods and databases, made it possible to compile the maps reflecting the contents of individual minerals both in the clay and coarse fractions. For the first time, digital maps of the contents of various minerals in soils of Moldova were developed on the basis of data of quantitative X-ray diffractometry and their statistical analysis. A close relationship was found between the content of certain minerals and the particle-size distribution data, which permitted us to perform mapping of the mineralogical composition of soils with due account for their textures. As an example, digital maps of the contents of clay minerals (smectite and illite) in the A horizon and in the parent material of Moldavian chernozems and forest soils on a scale of 1 : 3 M are presented. Statistical data on the contents of these minerals in the soils of different textures are discussed. The content of smectite varies within 6–43%, and the content of illite varies within 3–16%. Their distribution in the soil profiles attests to a statistically reliable difference between the contents of these minerals in the A horizon and in the parent material. • Traditional methods for soil specific surface area (SSA) are costly and laborious. • We propose models to estimate SSA from a single hygroscopic water content (w h) • Separate SSA models are developed for soil samples grouped by clay mineralogy. • Considering soil clay mineralogy in SSA models significantly improved performance. • Models based on w h were superior to models based on texture, carbon or CEC. The soil specific surface area (SSA) is an important variable for soil science and geoenvironmental engineering applications, but traditional measurement methods are difficult and time-consuming. Regression models or pedotransfer functions are often used to estimate SSA from other soil properties (e.g., clay content and cation exchange capacity), but these models do not consider the impact of clay mineralogy. Hygroscopic water content (w h) is intimately linked to these soil properties, which suggests that w h may be a better parameter for SSA estimation. This study (i) proposes regression models that estimate SSA from w h at different relative humidity values (5 to 90%) for kaolinite-rich samples (KA), illite-rich or mixed clay samples (IL/MC), montmorillonite-rich samples (ML), and a combination of all samples (ALL) and (ii) compares the performance of the w h models to other published models that comprise clay, silt and soil organic carbon contents and cation exchange capacity. We found that the sample-specific w h regression models accurately estimated SSA for KA, IL/MC and ML samples. For KA and IL/MC samples, the performance of the KA model (e.g., for adsorption, average RMSE = 10.5 m2/g) and IL/MC model (average RMSE = 21.3 m2/g) were better than the ALL-calibration model (KA: average RMSE = 18.7 m2/g; ML: average RMSE = 22.4 m2/g). For ML samples, similar model performance between the ML-calibration model (average RMSE = 41.4 m2/g) and the ALL-calibration model (average RMSE = 41.1 m2/g) was observed. In addition, the model performance of regression models based on w h was superior to models published in the literature that are based on clay, silt and soil organic carbon contents and cation exchange capacity. Overall, this study confirms that a single measure of w h can provide reliable estimates of the SSA while revealing a significant impact of clay mineralogy on model performance. Soil with persistent macroaggregates should maintain its integrity following wetting disturbance. This study determined how wetting-drying cycles affect two pre-sieved macroaggregate size fractions (2–4 mm and 0.6–2 mm) of clay and organic soils pretreated with organic carbon substrates. Soil aggregates were unamended or treated with organic carbon (4 g C from soluble glucose or insoluble wheat straw per kg soil) before being exposed, during three months of incubation, to nine sequential wettings at three wetting intensities (no wetting, slow wetting at the rate of 1 g of water per second or fast wetting with 2 g water per second). The glucose-treated macroaggregates from the clay soil were minimally disturbed by wetting-drying cycles, maintained their shape (shown by high aggregate circularity and low major/minor axis ratio) and were more cohesive, possibly because of a higher microbial activity provided by the glucose treatment. In contrast, the clay soil macroaggregates mixed with wheat straw, which had the same carbon content as glucose, did not persist when exposed to wetting-drying cycles. Macroaggregates from organic soil resisted nine wetting events with or without glucose addition, implying a distinct aggregate binding mechanism in organic soil compared to the clay soil. The persistence of clay soil macroaggregates treated with glucose may be related to microbial processes that promote macroaggregate stability, with glucose physical adhesion expected to substantially improve aggregate stabilization in this mineral soil as well. On poorly drained grassland farms in Ireland, stone aggregates remain the only in-field drain envelope material used by contractors. A variety of aggregate sizes and lithologies are currently in use, but their performance in clay-textured mineral soils is unknown. In practice, this may result in ad-hoc system performance and a varied lifespan due to sediment ingress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hydraulic and filter performance of a range of aggregate gradations in clay-textured mineral soils. Nine aggregates (three replicates of each) were examined in laboratory units containing clay-textured soil, with a perforated drainpipe surrounded by an aggregate envelope ranging in size from 0.7 to 62 mm and a constant 0.4 m head of water above the soil surface. To determine the hydraulic performance of the envelope, the discharge rate of water through the drainage pipe outlet was measured over 38 days. To determine the filter performance, sediment loss, sediment settlement in the drainpipe, and ingress of sediment into the envelope were measured. The results indicated that only aggregates in the 0.7–19 mm size range performed adequately from both the hydraulic and filter perspectives and were deemed suitable for use with a clay-textured soil. Discharge appeared to be inversely related to aggregate size, with larger discharges being measured in the smaller aggregate sizes and smaller discharges measured in the larger aggregate sizes (exception: Aggregate 2). For all aggregates examined, discharge was greatest at the start of the experiment before reducing over time. When the cost of the aggregate material is also considered, aggregates in the lower size range are 18–50% more expensive than aggregates in the higher size range. Aggregates with particle sizes ranging from 0.7–19 mm are recommended for in situ field testing in clay-textured soils. • In some regions in clay textured soils, varied envelope stone aggregate sizes are used. • An aggregate size range of 0.7–19 mm offers better hydraulic and filter performance. • Aggregates larger than 20 mm are not suitable for efficient envelope function. • Smaller aggregate sizes are 18–50% more expensive than sizes in higher ranges. This paper addresses the modelling of cesium sorption in non-equilibrium and nonlinear conditions with a two-site model. Compared to the classical K d approach, the proposed model better reproduced the breakthrough curves observed during continuous-flow stirred tank reactor experiments conducted on two contrasted soils. Fitted parameters suggested contrasted conditions of cesium sorption between 1) equilibrium sites, with low affinity and high sorption capacity comparable to CEC and 2) non-equilibrium sites, with a fast sorption rate (half-time of 0.2–0.3 h), a slow desorption rate (half-time of 3–9 days) and a very low sorption capacity (0.02–0.04% of CEC). Comparison of EK sites densities with sorption capacities derived from the literature suggests that the EK equilibrium and kinetic sites might correspond to ion exchange and surface complexation of soil clay minerals respectively. The interaction of similar soil forming factors with different parent materials determines soil chemical weathering, influencing soil processes and properties. In the coastal temperate rainforests of southeast Alaska, Spodosols is the dominant soil order in well-drained parent materials regardless of the lithology. Yet, the role of lithology on chemical weathering, base cation depletion, and mineral transformation during pedogenesis remains elusive. Here, we established a lithosequence comprised of soils derived from tonalite, phyllite, slate, and metavolcanic rocks to test the hypothesis that despite the soils in southeast Alaska presenting similar taxonomy and morphology, the influence of lithology in chemical weathering intensity and mineralogy can be detected. We evaluated physicochemical properties, clay mineralogy, Fe-Al oxides, chemical weathering, and elemental mass balance on eleven Spodosols sampled along the lithosequence. We also propose a new weathering index, the Weathering Index for Spodosols (WISP), suitable to evaluate the weathering degree of soils with Al mobility and base-rich parent materials. This index fills a gap in traditional weathering indices that uses Al as an immobile element and/or does not evaluate the leaching of main base cations. We found the pedons across the lithosequence expressed similar physicochemical properties, with predominantly thick profiles, presenting andic properties, relatively thick spodic horizons, and thin E horizons. Podzolization imposed similar mineral transformation trends, mainly dissolution of chlorite, mica alteration to interstratified mica-vermiculite, and formation of smectite in E horizons. Kaolinite was detected in the soils from all lithologies, but only in trace amounts in phyllite soils. Fe oxides depth distribution was similar but with a higher concentration in the slate (44.5 ± 4.2 g/kg), followed by metavolcanic (31.6 ± 4.0 g/kg), phyllite (27.9 ± 3.8 g/kg), and tonalite soils (19.9 ± 5.7 g/kg) and predominantly as organometallic complexes (extracted by Na-pyrophosphate). The stronger weathering of chlorite and mica in the E horizons was reflected in larger losses of Mg and K, while Ca and Na were more depleted in the spodic horizons, suggesting plagioclase weathering. Slate soils were the most depleted in base cations, followed by phyllite, tonalite, and metavolcanic soils. The more depleted status of slate soils was supported by the higher WISP values (WISP = 62), followed by phyllite (WISP = 55), tonalite (WISP = 53), and metavolcanic soils (WISP = 45). Our results demonstrated that lithology controlled elemental depletion intensities, Fe oxide concentrations, and partially the clay fraction mineralogy in addition to podzolization acting as a dominant pedogenic process across all sites. These findings advance our understanding of the role of lithology on soil mineralogy/geochemistry that impacts critical soil functions, such as the soil carbon cycle, elemental fluxes, organo-mineral interactions, and solid-solution reactions. Recently, the disposal of dredged soil has become a worldwide problem. In order to utilize high water content soil material, it is essential to dewater and increase the soil strength. There are urgent demands for developing an alternative new method to dewater the dredged soils in more economical and environment friendly standpoint. Furthermore, by using adsorption effect of porous material such as granular blast furnace slag, there is possibility to establish purification technology of contaminated soil. In this paper, the siphon method is proposed to dewater the high water content dredged soil with horizontally installed plastic board drain and filter material. In order to investigate the availability and effectiveness of this method, series of tests were conducted to investigate the dewatering behaviour and strength of dredged soil with vacuum and siphon methods by using different materials as filter, such as Toyoura sand, zeolite, granular blast furnace slag. High water content dredged soil can be consolidated by using siphon method with saturated filter material such as Toyoura sand. However, it was impossible to dewater dredged soil by using siphon method with unsaturated porous filter material. The water retention tests of soil by using centrifuge method was performed to clarify the mechanism of preventing consolidation dredged soil. The test cannot find an accurate soil-water retention curve of dredged soil because of volume change. The water retention test by suction method was performed and clarify the mechanism that prevents consolidation dredged soil. The cause that prevents consolidation of dredged soil has been presumes by clarifying the air entry value. In addition, degree of saturation and suction in dredged soil and filter material has been clarified by using aquameters. The interaction between soil organic carbon (SOC) and clay minerals is a critical mechanism for retaining SOC and protecting soil fertility and long-term agricultural sustainability. The SOC composition and minerals speciation in clay fractions (<2 μm) within soil aggregates under straw removed (T) and straw incorporation (TS) conditions were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The TS treatment promoted enrichment of clay in aggregates. The TS increased the contents of SOC (27.0–86.6%), poorly crystalline Fe oxide (Feo), and activity of Fe oxides (Feo/Fed); whereas, it reduced the concentrations of free Fe oxide (Fed) in the clay fractions within aggregates. Straw incorporation promoted the accumulation of aromatic-C and carboxylic-C in the clay fraction within aggregates. The relative amount of hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite, aliphatic-C, and alcohol-C in the clay fractions within the macroaggregates was higher than that microaggregates, whereas the relative amounts of illite, kaolinite, Fe(III), and aromatic-C had a reverse tendency. The hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite in clay fractions showed positive correlation with the amounts of C–C(H) (r = 0.93) and C–O (r = 0.96 *, p < 0.05). The concentration of Feo and Feo/Fed ratio was positively correlated with the amounts of C=C and C(O)O content in clay within aggregates. Long-term straw incorporation induced transformation of clay minerals and Fe oxide, which was selectively stabilized straw-derived organic compounds in clay fractions within soil aggregates. Abstract: The south east basin of France shelters deep CO2 reservoirs often studied with the aim of better constraining geological CO2 storage operations. Here we present new soil gas data, completing an existing dataset (CO2, 222Rn, 4He), together with mineralogical and physical characterisations of soil columns, in an attempt to better understand the spatial distribution of gas concentrations in the soils and to rule on the sealed character of the CO2 reservoir at present time. Anomalous gas concentrations were found but did not appear to be clearly related to geological structures that may drain deep gases up to the surface, implying a dominant influence of near surface processes as indicated by carbon isotope ratios. Coarse grained, quartz-rich soils favoured the existence of high CO2 concentrations. Fine grained clayey soils preferentially favoured the existence of 222Rn but not CO2. Soil formations did not act as barriers preventing gas migrations in soils, either due to water content or due to mineralogical composition. No abundant leakage from the Montmiral reservoir can be highlighted by the measurements, even near the exploitation well. As good correlation between CO2 and 222Rn concentrations still exist, it is suggested that 222Rn migration is also CO2 dependent in non-leaking areas – diffusion dominated systems. Precise prediction of uranium adsorption at water-mineral interface is of great significance for the safe disposal of radionuclides in geologic environments. Surface complexation modeling (SCM) as a very useful tool has been extensively investigated for simulating adsorption behavior of metals/metalloids at water-mineral interface. Numerous studies concerning the fitting of uranium adsorption on various adsorbents using SCM are well documented, but the systematic and comprehensive review of uranium adsorption using various SCM is not available. In this review, we briefly summarized the rationale of SCM, including constant-capacitance-model (CCM), diffuse-layer-model (DLM), triple-layer-model (TLM); The recent progress in the application of SCM on the fitting of uranium adsorption towards metal (hydr)oxides, clay minerals and soil/sediments was reviewed in details. This review hopefully provides the beneficial guidelines for predicting the transport and fate of uranium in geologic environments beyond laboratory timescales. The number of sensors, ground-based and remote, exploiting the relationship between soil dielectric response and soil water content continues to grow. Empirical expressions for this relationship generally work well in coarse-textured soils but can break down for high-surface area and intricate materials such as clayey soils. Dielectric mixing models are helpful for exploring mechanisms and developing new understanding of the dielectric response in porous media that do not conform to a simple empirical approach, such as clayey soils. Here, we explore the dielectric response of clay minerals and clayey soils using the mixing model approach in the frequency domain. Our modeling focuses on the use of mixing models to explore geometrical effects. New spectroscopic data are presented for clay minerals (talc, kaolinite, illite and montmorillonite) and soils dominated by these clay minerals in the 1 MHz–6 GHz bandwidth. We also present a new typology for the way water is held in soils that we hope will act as a framework for furthering discussion on sensor design. We found that the frequency-domain response can be mostly accounted for by adjusting model structural parameters, which needs to be conducted to describe the Maxwell–Wagner (MW) relaxation effects. The work supports the importance of accounting for soil structural properties to understand and predict soil dielectric response and ultimately to find models that can describe the dielectric–water content relationship in fine-textured soils measured with sensors. The article presents a study which aims to determine the quantitative and qualitative correlations of the mineralogical components of Earth soil and rocks from Mars and analyze the problems on the theory of their joint formation. It says that the research used Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS) to analyze the three groups of samples from the soil-bioclimatic zones of the Earth, rocks from Mars obtained by the Martian rovers Spirit and Opportunity, and a ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution-clayey mineral. It says that comparative analysis of the MS data revealed that the hematite-goethite ratio and effective magnetic fields of iron nuclei are different for Earth and Mars. Furthermore, the combined magnetic and electric superfine parameters in the hematite are different.
