Background: The prevalence of skin diseases and diabetes mellitus (DM) are prominent around the world. The current scope of knowledge regarding the prevalence of skin diseases and comorbidities with type 2 DM (T2DM) is limited, leading to limited recognition of the correlations between skin diseases and T2DM., Methods: We collected 383 subjects from the Da Qing Diabetes Study during the period from July 9th to September 1st, 2016. The subjects were categorized into three groups: Normal glucose tolerance (NGT), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and T2DM. The prevalence and clinical characteristics of skin diseases were recorded and investigated., Results: In this cross-sectional study, 383 individuals with ages ranging from 53 to 89-year-old were recruited. The overall prevalence of skin diseases was 93.5%, and 75.7% of individuals had two or more kinds of skin diseases. Additionally, there were 47 kinds of comorbid skin diseases in patients with T2DM, of which eight kinds of skin diseases had a prevalence >10%. The prevalence of skin diseases in NGT, IGT, and T2DM groups were 93.3%, 91.5%, and 96.6%, respectively; stratified analysis by categories showed a statistically significant difference in "disturbances of pigmentation" and "neurological and psychogenic dermatoses". The duration of T2DM also significantly associated with the prevalence of "disturbances of pigmentation" and "neurological and psychogenic dermatoses". Subsequently, the prevalence of "disturbances of pigmentation" was higher in males than females in NGT (P < 0.01) and T2DM (P < 0.01) groups. In addition, the difference in the prevalence of "disturbances of pigmentation" was also significant in NGT and T2DM groups (P < 0.01)., Conclusions: There was a high prevalence of skin diseases in the Da Qing Diabetes Study. Organ transplant recipients (OTRs) are at increased risk of cutaneous malignancy. Skin disorders in OTRs of color (OTRoC) have rarely been systematically assessed. We aimed to ascertain the burden of skin disease encountered in OTRoC by prospectively collecting data from OTRs attending 2 posttransplant skin surveillance clinics: 1 in London, UK and 1 in Philadelphia, USA. Retrospective review of all dermatological diagnoses was performed. Data from 1766 OTRs were analyzed: 1024 (58%) white, 376 (21%) black, 261 (15%) Asian, 57 (3%) Middle Eastern/Mediterranean (ME/M), and 48 (2.7%) Hispanic; and 1128 (64%) male. Viral infections affected 45.1% of OTRs, and were more common in white and ME/M patients (P < .001). Fungal infections affected 28.1% and were more common in ME/M patients (P < .001). Inflammatory skin disease affected 24.5%, and was most common in black patients (P < .001). In addition, 26.4% of patients developed skin cancer. There was an increased risk of skin cancer in white vs nonwhite OTRs (HR 4.4, 95% CI 3.5-5.7, P < .001): keratinocyte cancers were more common in white OTRs (P < .001) and Kaposi sarcoma was more common in black OTRs (P < .001). Background: The management of pediatric dermatological conditions such as alopecia areata (AA), psoriasis, atopic dermatitis (AD), and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) has significantly evolved with the introduction of biologics and small molecule targeted therapies. The advancement in understanding the immunopathogenesis of these chronic skin conditions has led to the development and approval of novel biologics and small molecule therapies. Initially approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for adults, most of these therapies are now being evaluated in clinical trials for safety and efficacy in adolescents and children, expanding new treatment options for pediatric patients. The role of the FDA in drug approval is multifaceted from drug inception, ensuring that research, data, and evidence show that the proposed drug is effective and safe for the intended use. Objective: The goal of this review article is to provide an overview of the recently FDA-approved and potential biologic and oral small molecule therapies in clinical trials for AA, psoriasis, AD, and HS in pediatric patients. Methods: The search for this review included keywords in ClinicalTrials.gov, PubMed, and Google Scholar for the latest research and clinical trials relevant to these conditions and treatments without the PRISMA methodology. Results: For pediatric AA, ritlecitinib is FDA-approved, while baricitinib and updacitinib are in phase 3 clinical trials for pediatric approval. The FDA-approved drugs for pediatric psoriasis include secukinumab, ustekinumab, ixekizumab, etanercept, and apremilast. Other phase 3 clinical trials for pediatric psoriasis include risankizumab, guselkumab, tildrakizumab, brodalumab, and deucravacitinib. For pediatric AD, the FDA-approved drugs are dupilumab, tralokinumab, abrocitinib, and upadacitinib, with many other drugs in phase 3 trials. Adalimumab is an FDA-approved biologic for pediatric HS, with various clinical trials ongoing for adults. The approved biologics and small molecule therapies had higher efficacy and improved safety profiles compared to traditional medications. Conclusions: With numerous ongoing trials, the success of these clinical trials could lead to their inclusion in treatment guidelines for these chronic skin conditions. Biologics and small molecule therapies offer new avenues for effective disease management, enabling personalized therapeutic interventions and improving pediatric health outcomes. Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects 15%‐30% of children and 10% of adults globally, with its incidence being influenced by genetic, environmental, and various other factors. While the immune plays a crucial role in the development, the composition of gut microbiota and serum metabolites also contribute to its pathogenesis. Subject: Study the characteristics of gut microbiota and serum metabolites in patients with atopic dermatitis Method: In this study, we collected stool and serum samples from 28 AD patients and 23 healthy individuals (NC) for metagenomic sequencing of gut microbiota and non‐targeted metabolomic sequencing of serum. Result: Our results revealed a lower diversity of gut microbiota in the AD group compared to the NC group. The predominant Phylum in AD patients were Bacteroidetes, Pseudomonas, and Verrucomicrobia, with the most dominant bacterial genus being Faecalibacterium. At the species level, Prevotella copri and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii were found to be the most abundant bacteria. Significant differences in serum metabolite profiles were observed between NC and AD patients, with noticeable variations in metabolite expression levels. The majority of metabolites in the serum of AD patients exhibited low expression, while a few showed high expression levels. Notably, metabolites such as Cholesterol glucuronide, Styrene, Lutein, Betaine, Phosphorylcholine, Taurine, and Creatinine displayed the most pronounced alterations. A 35-year-old intramural male athlete presented to the athletic training staff with a 4.5- × 2.2-cm itchy, painful, swollen, and infected insidious skin lesion on his right lateral malleolus due to an underlying dermatologic deficiency. Suspecting infection, the patient was referred to his nurse practitioner and was diagnosed with atopic dermatitis caused by a ceramide deficiency. He was placed on cefalexin and mupirocin 2% ointment but returned due to the lesion increasing to 8.5 × 6 cm, although the infection seemed controlled. He was instructed to use Ceravé topical cream, clobetasol propionate 5%, and to consume foods rich in healthy oils (omega-3 fatty acids, olive oil). Unmitigated, this lesion could have resulted in severe infection and tissue damage. Atopic dermatitis is relatively common in the general population, but its appearance in healthy athletes highlights that athletic trainers need to be well versed in not just apparent causes of skin ailments (ie, infection) but also root causes. Chronic inflammatory skin diseases are multifactorial diseases that combine genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, and metabolic disturbances associated with abnormal immune responses. From an immunological perspective, the better understanding of their physiopathology has demonstrated a large complex network of immune cell subsets and related cytokines that interact with both epidermal and dermal cells. For example, in type-1-associated diseases such as alopecia areata, vitiligo, and localized scleroderma, recent evidence suggests the presence of a type-2 inflammation that is well known in atopic dermatitis. Whether this type-2 immune response has a protective or detrimental impact on the development and chronicity of these diseases remains to be fully elucidated, highlighting the need to better understand its involvement for the management of patients. The aim of this review is to present the potential application of camphor—a bicyclic monoterpene ketone—in the prevention of skin infections. Skin diseases represent a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by prolonged symptoms that significantly diminish the quality of life. They affect the dermis, the epidermis, and even subcutaneous tissue. They very often have a bacterial or fungal background. Therapy for dermatological skin disorders is difficult and long-term. Therefore, it is important to find a compound, preferably of natural origin, that (i) prevents the initiation of this infection and (ii) supports the skin's repair process. Based on its documented anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-acne, anesthetic, strengthening, and warming properties, camphor can be used as a preventative measure in dermatological infectious diseases and as a component in medical and cosmetic products. This work discusses the structure and physicochemical properties of camphor, its occurrence, and methods of obtaining it from natural sources as well as through chemical synthesis. The use of camphor in industrial preparations is also presented. Additionally, after a detailed review of the literature, the metabolism of camphor, its interactions with other medicinal substances, and its antimicrobial properties against bacteria and fungi involved in skin diseases are discussed with regard to their resistance. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is associated with anxiety and depression. Few studies have addressed interventions for symptoms of anxiety and depression in this population. To determine the efficacy of interventions for anxiety and depression in patients with AD. PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO were searched from inception to November 2023. English-language studies published in peer-reviewed journals evaluating the effect of interventions on anxiety and/or depression using validated assessment tools on patients with AD were included. Titles, abstracts, and articles were screened by at least two independent reviewers. Of 1410 references that resulted in the initial search, 17 studies were included. Fourteen of these studies are randomized controlled trials, while the other 3 studies are prospective controlled trials with pre and post-test designs. Data were extracted using a standardized extraction form, and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. To accommodate trials with multiple interventions (each compared to a control group), we conducted a mixed-effects meta-analysis with the trial as a random effect. Prespecified outcomes were changes in symptoms of anxiety and depression in patients with AD as evaluated using standardized assessment tools. Of the 17 studies included in this systematic review, 7 pharmacological intervention studies with 4723 participants examining 5 different medications were included in a meta-analysis. Of these studies, only 1 study evaluated medications prescribed to treat anxiety and/or depression; the rest evaluated medications prescribed to treat AD. Meta-analysis of all the pharmacological interventions resulted in significant improvement in anxiety, depression, and combined anxiety-depression scale scores (standardized mean difference [95% CI]: − 0.29 [− 0.49 to − 0.09], − 0.27 [− 0.45 to − 0.08], − 0.27 [− 0.45 to − 0.08]) respectively. The 10 non-pharmacological studies with 2058 participants showed general improvement in anxiety but not depression. A meta-analysis of the non-pharmacological interventions was not conducted due to variable approaches and limited data. Pharmacological interventions designed to improve AD were found to improve anxiety and depression in patients with moderate-severe disease. Fibroblasts are an important subset of mesenchymal cells in maintaining skin homeostasis and resisting harmful stimuli. Meanwhile, fibroblasts modulate immune cell function by secreting cytokines, thereby implicating their involvement in various dermatological conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo, and atopic dermatitis. Recently, variations in the subtypes of fibroblasts and their expression profiles have been identified in these prevalent autoimmune skin diseases, implying that fibroblasts may exhibit distinct functionalities across different diseases. In this review, from the perspective of their fundamental functions and remarkable heterogeneity, we have comprehensively collected evidence on the role of fibroblasts and their distinct subpopulations in psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, and scleroderma. Atopic dermatitis, also known as atopic eczema, is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by red pruritic skin lesions, xerosis, ichthyosis, and skin pain. Among the social impacts of atopic dermatitis are difficulties and detachment in relationships and social stigmatization. Additionally, atopic dermatitis is known to cause sleep disturbance, anxiety, hyperactivity, and depression. Although the pathological process behind atopic dermatitis is not fully known, it appears to be a combination of epidermal barrier dysfunction and immune dysregulation. Skin is the largest organ of the human body which acts as a mechanical barrier to toxins and UV light and a natural barrier against water loss. Both functions face significant challenges due to atopic dermatitis. The list of factors that can potentially trigger or contribute to atopic dermatitis is extensive, ranging from genetic factors, family history, dietary choices, immune triggers, and environmental factors. Consequently, prevention, early clinical diagnosis, and effective treatment may be the only resolutions to combat this burdensome disease. Ensuring safe and targeted drug delivery to the skin layers, without reaching the systemic circulation is a promising option raised by nano-delivery systems in dermatology. In this review, we explored the current understanding and approaches of atopic dermatitis and outlined a range of the most recent therapeutics and dosage forms brought by nanotechnology. Inflammatory skin diseases include a series of disorders characterized by a strong activation of the innate and adaptive immune system in which proinflammatory cytokines play a fundamental role in supporting inflammation. Skin inflammation is a complex process influenced by various factors, including genetic and environmental factors, characterized by the dysfunction of both immune and non-immune cells. Psoriasis (PS) and atopic dermatitis (AD) are the most common chronic inflammatory conditions of the skin whose pathogeneses are very complex and multifactorial. Both diseases are characterized by an immunological dysfunction involving a predominance of Th1 and Th17 cells in PS and of Th2 cells in AD. Suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) proteins are intracellular proteins that control inflammatory responses by regulating various signaling pathways activated by proinflammatory cytokines. SOCS signaling is involved in the regulation and progression of inflammatory responses in skin-resident and non-resident immune cells, and recent data suggest that these negative modulators are dysregulated in inflammatory skin diseases such as PS and AD. This review focuses on the current understanding about the role of SOCS proteins in modulating the activity of inflammatory mediators implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory skin diseases such as PS and AD. Background: Limited real-world data are available on upadacitinib drug survival in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). Objectives: To investigate upadacitinib drug survival, and the reasons and predictors of drug discontinuation in AD patients. Methods: All consecutive patients aged 18–75 years, affected by moderate-to-severe AD, and treated with upadacitinib for more than 1 month at dermatological clinics were included during November 2020–August 2023. Upadacitinib survival was investigated through Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and the predictors through multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: Overall, 325 adult AD patients (mean (SD) age, 38.6(15.6) years) had a 1-year and 1.5-year upadacitinib drug survival of 91.5% and 80.2%, respectively. The main reasons for drug discontinuation (25/325, 7.7%) were adverse events (4.9%), including cutaneous or infectious diseases (1.5%), such as acne and herpes zoster; blood test changes (1.2%), including hypercholesterolemia, creatine phosphokinase or liver enzyme elevation, and lymphopenia; urinary or respiratory infections (0.9%); deep venous thrombosis (0.3%); malignancies (0.3%); loss of consciousness (0.3%); and arthralgias (0.3%); followed by ineffectiveness (0.6%). No specific characteristic was significantly associated with an increased risk of upadacitinib discontinuation. Conclusions: Our findings show that upadacitinib was effective in moderate-to-severe AD after more than 1 year of continuous treatment but point to the need for clinical and laboratory monitoring of patients. The increasing global demand for skin disease diagnostics emphasizes the urgent need for advancements in AI-assisted diagnostic technologies for dermatoscopic images. In current practical medical systems, the primary challenge is balancing lightweight models with accurate image analysis to address constraints like limited storage and computational costs. While knowledge distillation methods hold immense potential in healthcare applications, related research on multi-class skin disease tasks is scarce. To bridge this gap, our study introduces an enhanced multi-source knowledge fusion distillation framework, termed DSP-KD, which improves knowledge transfer in a dual-stage progressive distillation approach to maximize mutual information between teacher and student representations. The experimental results highlight the superior performance of our distilled ShuffleNetV2 on both the ISIC2019 dataset and our private skin disorders dataset. Compared to other state-of-the-art distillation methods using diverse knowledge sources, the DSP-KD demonstrates remarkable effectiveness with a smaller computational burden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Janus kinase inhibitors, also known as JAK inhibitors, JAKinibs or JAKi, are a new group of disease-modifying drugs. They work by inhibiting enzymes involved in the transmission of information from receptors located in the cell membrane to the cell interior, specifically to the cell nucleus, thus disrupting the JAK-STAT pathway. This pathway plays a role in key cellular processes such as the immune response and cell growth. This feature is used in the treatment of patients with rheumatological, gastroenterological and hematological diseases. Recently, it has been discovered that JAK-STAT pathway inhibitors also show therapeutic potential against dermatological diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, alopecia areata and acquired vitiligo. Studies are underway to use them in the treatment of several other dermatoses. Janus kinase inhibitors represent a promising class of drugs for the treatment of skin diseases refractory to conventional therapy. Objectives: Evidence shows that majority of dermatological disorders affect the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients. However, the extent of its negative impact and predictors has not been studied in Ethiopia. Thus, this study looked at assessing the HRQoL and determinants in patients with dermatological disorders (DDs) attending the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (UoGCSH). Results: Patients with dermatological disorders (n = 400) were included in the final analysis using a systematic random sampling technique. The mean age of the participants was 39.79 (± 17.17) years. The average (± SD) score of EQ-5D-5 L was 1.92 (± 0.74). Regarding domains, pain/discomfort accounted for a higher proportion 59 (22.3%) followed by anxiety/depression 61 (15.3%). Receiving topical preparations (β = -0.399, 95% CI: -0.6, − 0.19; < 0.001), systemic only medication (β = -0.378, 95% CI: -0.607, -0.149; p = 0.002), having slight, mild, and moderate skin diseases found to have an inverse association with impaired HRQoL, (β = -0.654, 95% CI; -1.01, -0.290); p < 0.001), (β = -0.748, 95% CI: -0.960, -0.538; p < 0.001), and (β = -0.465, 95% CI: -0.642, -0.283; p < 0.001), respectively. Furthermore, age (β = 0.011, 95% CI: 0.006, 0.016; p = 0.001), long duration with skin disease (β = 0.046, 95% CI: 0.015, 0.352; p = 0.013), and presence of comorbidity (β = 0.251, 95% CI: 0.096, 0.402; p = 0.002) were significant predictors of HRQoL among dermatological disease patients. Conclusion: Patients with dermatological disease were found to have a compromised HRQoL. Pain /discomfort problems accounted for a higher proportion compared with other domains. Background: Circulating cytokines play a crucial role in the onset and progression of immune skin diseases. However, the causal relationships and the direction of causal effects require further investigation. Methods: Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were conducted to assess the causal relationships between 41 circulating cytokines and six immune skin diseases including alopecia areata, chloasma, hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), lichen planus (LP), seborrheic dermatitis, and urticaria, using summary statistics from genome-wide association studies. Reverse MR analyses was performed to test for the reverse causation. Pleiotropy and heterogeneity tests were conducted to assess the robustness of the findings. Results: Twelve unique cytokines showed a suggestive causal relationship with the risk of six immune skin diseases. Among them, the causal effects between 9 unique cytokines and immune skin diseases have strong statistical power. Additionally, the concentrations of six cytokines might be influenced by LP and urticaria. After Bonferroni correction, the following associations remained significant: the causal effect of beta-nerve growth factor on HS (odds ratio [OR] = 1.634, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.226-2.177, p = 7.97e-04), interleukin (IL)-6 on LP (OR = 0.615, 95% CI = 0.481-0.786, p = 1.04e-04), IL-4 on LP (OR = 1.099. 95% CI = 1.020-1.184, p = 1.26e-02), and IL-2 on urticaria (OR = 0.712, 95% CI = 0.531-0.955, p = 2.33e-02). Conclusion: This study provides novel perspectives on the relationship between circulating cytokines and immune skin diseases, potentially providing valuable insights into their etiology, diagnostic approaches, and treatment. The epithelial-immune microenvironment (EIME) of epithelial tissues has five common elements: (1) microbial flora, (2) barrier, (3) epithelial cells, (4) immune cells, and (5) peripheral nerve endings. EIME provides both constant defense and situation-specific protective responses through three-layered mechanisms comprising barriers, innate immunity, and acquired immunity. The skin is one of the largest organs in the host defense system. The interactions between the five EIME elements of the skin protect against external dangers from the environment. This dysregulation can result in the generation of inflammatory loops in chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Here, we propose an understanding of EIME in chronic skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, systemic lupus erythematosus, alopecia areata, and acne vulgaris. Introduction: Validated patient report tools for quantifying patient experiences of itch in prurigo nodularis (PN) are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the validity of the 11-point peak pruritus numerical rating scale (PP NRS) as a single-item patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure for assessing itch severity in PN. Methods: Content validity of the PP NRS was evaluated through qualitative interviews with adults with PN. The PP NRS was then psychometrically evaluated using data from a placebo-controlled trial of nemolizumab in adults with PN, during which patients completed the PP NRS daily. Meaningful within-patient change was estimated from the qualitative interviews and by anchor- and distribution-based analyses of trial data. Results: The interview participants (N = 21) all understood the PP NRS and reported itch as their worst symptom overall. The PP NRS showed good test–retest reliability and demonstrated convergent validity and known-groups validity. PP NRS scores improved more in patients classified as "improved" on other clinical outcome measures than in those classified as "worsened/unchanged". Triangulation of the different estimates identified a 2- to 5-point decrease in PP NRS score as a meaningful within-patient change threshold. Conclusion: The PP NRS is a content-valid and reliable PRO measure for quantifying itch severity in adults with PN in clinical trials. Trial Registration Number: NCT03181503. Plain Language Summary: Prurigo nodularis is a skin disease where the skin becomes inflamed and very itchy. Itching and scratching can ruin the lives of people with prurigo nodularis. For doctors to know how well treatments for prurigo nodularis are working, they need to be able measure how bad their patients' itching is. Here we tested whether a tool called the peak pruritus numeric rating scale (PP NRS) can be used to reliably measure itching in patients with prurigo nodularis. The PP NRS asks patients to rate their itch "at the worst moment during the previous 24 h" on a scale from 0 ("no itch") to 10 ("worst itch imaginable"). We interviewed 21 patients with prurigo nodularis. Overall, itch was their worst symptom. They were able to use the PP NRS with few or no problems. To further explore whether the PP NRS can be used by patients with prurigo nodularis, we also obtained data from a clinical study. In this clinical study, patients with prurigo nodularis received a drug that might one day be used to treat their disease. They completed the PP NRS daily during the time they received the drug. When we analyzed the data from the clinical study, we found that the PP NRS has the properties a tool like this needs to be useful. Emerging research underscores the substantial link between gut flora and various inflammatory skin diseases. We hypothesize that there exists a complex gut–skin axis, possibly affecting the progression of conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, and rosacea. However, the precise nature of the causal connection between gut flora and skin diseases remains unestablished. In this study, we started by compiling summary data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) featuring 211 unique gut microbiota and four types of skin conditions. We scrutinized these data across different taxonomic strata. Subsequently, we leveraged Mendelian randomization (MR) to ascertain if there is a causal link between gut microbiota and these skin conditions. We also performed a bidirectional MR analysis to identify the causality's direction. By utilizing Mendelian randomization, we identified 26 causal connections between the gut microbiome and four recognized inflammatory skin conditions, including 9 positive and 17 negative causal directions. Additional sensitivity analyses of these results revealed no evidence of pleiotropy or heterogeneity. Our MR analysis suggests a causal connection between gut microbiota and skin diseases, potentially providing groundbreaking perspectives for future mechanistic and clinical studies on microbiota-affected skin conditions. Background and Objectives: Skin problems are a widespread issue that affects people in both developing and wealthy countries, posing significant public health concerns. These disorders can profoundly impact individuals' social and psychological well-being. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of the most common skin diseases in the Jazan region of southwestern Saudi Arabia and investigate their impact on patients' quality of life and psychological and social well-being. Materials and Methods: An observational cross-sectional survey conducted among a random sample of 940 adults ≥ 18 years in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. Four standardized questionnaires were used for data collection: Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), a five-dimension questionnaire (EQ-5D), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Loneliness Scale (ULS-8). Results: The most prevalent skin conditions involved hair loss, which was reported by (61.1%) of the study population. These disorders significantly affected a higher percentage of females (71.9%) compared to males (46.3%) (p < 0.001). Melasma was more common in females (14.1%) than in males (4.3%) p < 0.001. The lowest prevalence was found for urticaria. Those with acne and hair loss reported higher mean scores on the PHQ-9 Scale than the group without these conditions (p < 0.05 for all). Patients with alopecia, acne, and melasma also reported significantly lower self-esteem scores compared to those without these skin conditions (p < 0.05 for all). Regarding the activity domain of QoL, participants with skin conditions reported no problems doing usual activities, compared to those without skin problems (p < 0.001). Conclusions: In conclusion, research revealed that the most prevalent skin condition was hair loss. Further, an association was found between skin diseases and the mental and social well-being of those affected, resulting in a negative impact on their quality of life. It is acknowledged that humans have a diverse and abundant microbial community known as the human microbiome. Nevertheless, our comprehension of the numerous functions these microorganisms have in human health is still in its early stages. Microorganisms belonging to the human microbiome typically coexist with their host, but in certain situations, they can lead to diseases. They are found in several areas of the human body in healthy individuals. The microbiome is highly diverse, and its composition varies depending on the body site. It primarily comprises bacteria that are crucial for upholding a state of well-being and equilibrium. The microbiome's influence on atopic dermatitis development was, therefore, analyzed. The importance of maintaining a balanced and functional commensal microbiota, as well as the use of prebiotics and probiotics in the prevention and treatment of atopic dermatitis were also explored. The skin microbiome's association with atopic dermatitis will allow for a better understanding of pathogenesis and also exploring new therapeutic approaches, making the skin microbiome an increasingly relevant therapeutic target. Dermocosmetics are products intended for sensitive and problematic skin. They are a good solution for additional care of skin affected by conditions such as atopic dermatitis, acne, psoriasis, or for couperose skin. The compounds of particular importance in the care of atopic skin include ceramides, ectoine, hyaluronic acid, vitamins A and E, as well as natural vegetable oils. The aim of this work was to develop a qualitative and quantitative approach and to investigate the characteristics of formulations such as a face cream, topical cream, body lotion, and cleansing foam dedicated to patients with atopic dermatitis. The finished cosmetic formulation was evaluated by performing formulation stability tests at different times and temperatures, together with packaging compatibility and organoleptic evaluation. Preservative tests were carried out to determine the efficacy of the preservative. In addition, dermatological and instrumental tests were done to verify the product properties. The newly developed cosmetic formulations showed good physical and chemical characteristics, typical of this type of product. They were also structurally and microbiologically stable during storage at various temperatures. Dermatological tests did not reveal any irritating or allergenic properties. The best data were obtained for the face cream--namely improvement of skin hydration by 21.88%, reduction of transepidermal water loss by 15.86%, alleviation of erythema by 15.77%, and of skin sensitivity by 17.20%. This work resulted in the preparation of innovative dermocosmetics to be used for atopic skin. Researchers active in the field of inflammatory skin diseases from the spectrum of dermatitis and eczema are well aware of a considerable overlap in the clinical pictures and proposed sets of diagnostic criteria for these diseases, which can hardly be overcome through the clinical or epidemiological research. In effect, patients are included in studies based on vague and overlapping criteria, while heterogeneous study populations may, in turn, lead to non-representative outcomes and continued confusion. In this narrative review, a systematics of diseases from the spectrum of dermatitis and eczema is proposed based on the origins of causative factors and the pathomechanisms involved. Difficulties in differentiating between these diseases are discussed, and the extent to which advances in the "omics" sciences might help to overcome them is considered. Of all the "omics" research in this field, more than 90% of the published papers were devoted to atopic dermatitis, with a striking underrepresentation of other diseases from the spectrum of dermatitis and eczema, conditions which collectively exceed the rates of atopic dermatitis by far. A greater "omics" research effort is urgently needed to tackle other dermatitides, like allergic, irritant and protein contact dermatitis, as well as radiation, seborrheic, stasis or autoimmune dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis findings should be validated not only against healthy donors but also other dermatitides. Skin diseases such as psoriasis (Ps) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) are immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. Overlap of autoinflammatory and autoimmune conditions hinders diagnoses and identifying personalized patient treatments due to different psoriasis subtypes and the lack of verified biomarkers. Recently, proteomics and metabolomics have been intensively investigated in a broad range of skin diseases with the main purpose of identifying proteins and small molecules involved in the pathogenesis and development of the disease. This review discusses proteomics and metabolomics strategies and their utility in research and clinical practice in psoriasis and psoriasis arthritis. We summarize the studies, from in vivo models conducted on animals through academic research to clinical trials, and highlight their contribution to the discovery of biomarkers and targets for biological drugs. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic or chronically relapsing inflammatory skin disease which results from a complex, multifaceted interaction between environmental factors in genetically predisposed patients. Epidermal barrier impairment, alteration of the cutaneous microbiota, effect of external antigens, neurosensory dysfunction, and inflammatory and immune dysregulation all play a pivotal role in inducing and maintaining AD lesions. AD significantly impacts the patient's quality of life and general well-being and is often associated with anxiety and/or depressive symptoms. Classical treatment options include topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors, phototherapy, and systemic immunosuppression with oral corticosteroids, cyclosporine, methotrexate, and azathioprine in more severe cases. A turning point in facing AD was accomplished when the efficacy and safety of dupilumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting the interleukin (IL)-4 receptor α subunit, led to its approval for the treatment of moderate-to-severe or severe AD in children, adolescents, and adults. Subsequently, a more extensive understanding of AD etiology and pathogenesis has allowed the development of several topical and systemic novel therapy options. Most of these drugs are monoclonal antibodies which interfere with the type 2 inflammatory cascade, especially its key cytokines IL-4 and IL-13, or its downstream Janus kinase signaling pathway. However, considering the relevance of other subtypes of T helper (Th) cells, such as Th1 and Th22, and the important role of specific cytokines (IL-31) in generating pruritus, the horizon of potential therapeutic targets has widened extremely. Nanocarriers, and especially nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC), represent one of the most effective systems for topical drug administration. NLCs are biodegradable, biocompatible and provide a prolonged drug release. The glutamate release inhibitor Riluzole (RLZ) is a drug currently used for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), with anti-proliferative effects potentially beneficial for diseases with excessive cell turnover. However, RLZ possesses low water solubility and high light-sensibility. We present here optimized NLCs loaded with RLZ (RLZ-NLCs) as a potential topical treatment. RLZ-NLCs were prepared by the hot-pressure homogenization method using active essential oils as liquid lipids, and optimized using the design of experiments approach. RLZ-NLCs were developed obtaining optimal properties for dermal application (mean size below 200 nm, negative surface charge and high RLZ entrapment efficacy). In vitro release study demonstrates that RLZ-NLCs allow the successful delivery of RLZ in a sustained manner. Moreover, RLZ-NLCs are not angiogenic and are able to inhibit keratinocyte cell proliferation. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the validity and reliability of the Thai version of FDLQI. Materials and Methods: Patients and their accompanying family members attending the Dermatology Outpatient Clinic at Siriraj Hospital were asked to complete the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), FDLQI, and the global question of their QoL (GQoL). The severity of the disease was assessed by physicians, the patients and the family members of the patients. Results: One hundred family members accompanying 92 patients with dermatological diseases (63% with inflammatory skin diseases and 37% with non-inflammatory skin diseases) were included. The mean age of the family members was 43.5±12.1 years and 70% were women. They had been mostly employed (74%) and graduated from universities (65%). Validity was demonstrated by a positive correlation between FDLQI and GQoL scores (rs=0.695, P<0.001), and between FDLQI and severity of the patient's disease (rs=0.578, P<0.001) as evaluated by family members. The FDLQI showed high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha=0.84) and test-retest reliability (ICC= 0.85). Conclusion: The construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability of the Thai FDLQI demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability. The skin is home to various bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses, collectively referred to as the skin microbiota. Patients with certain skin diseases reportedly have unique skin "dysbiosis," a condition involving imbalanced microbiota, suggesting that dysbiosis in the skin may be either causal or a consequence of specific skin diseases. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common allergic skin disease that affects 15-20% of children and 2-10% of adults worldwide. Both intrinsic genetic factors, such as susceptibility to type 2 inflammation or skin barrier dysfunction, and extrinsic environmental factors, such as air pollen and skin microbiota, contribute to AD. Staphylococcus aureus, which does not often colonize the skin of healthy individuals, is commonly identified in the lesional skin of patients with AD and is correlated with the disease flare. However, the role of S. aureus in the pathogenesis of AD has not been elucidated. Here, we discuss the pathological behavior of S. aureus, focusing on accessory gene regulator (Agr) quorum sensing, which is a fundamental bacterial cell-to-cell interaction mechanism that affects the behavior of S. aureus and other members of the microbial community. Importantly, beyond bacteria-bacteria interactions, the Agr quorum sensing system also regulates various virulence factors, which induce type 2 and IL-17-dependent skin inflammation in the host. Furthermore, the colonization of Agr-positive S. aureus in early life accelerates the development of pediatric AD. Phytochemicals represent a large and diverse group of naturally occurring compounds, bioactive nutrients, or phytonutrients produced by plants, widely found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains products, legumes, beans, herbs, seeds, nuts, tea, and dark chocolate. Flavonoids belong to the phenolic class of phytochemicals with potential solid pharmacological effects as modulators of multiple signal transduction pathways. (1) Background alteration of the skin microbiota, dysbiosis, causes skin barrier impairment resulting in disease development. Staphylococcus aureus, the main pathogen associated with dysbiosis, secretes several virulence factors, including α-toxin that damages tight junctions and compromises the integrity of the skin barrier. The use of members of the resident microbiota to restore the skin barrier, bacteriotherapy, represents a safe treatment for skin conditions among innovative options. The aim of this study is the evaluation of a wall fragment derived from a patented strain of Cutibacterium acnes DSM28251 (c40) alone and conjugated to a mucopolysaccharide carrier (HAc40) in counteracting S. aureus pathogenic action on two tight junction proteins (Claudin-1 and ZO-1) in an ex vivo porcine skin infection model. Methods: skin biopsies were infected with live S. aureus strains ATCC29213 and DSM20491. Tissue was pre-incubated or co-incubated with c40 and HAc40. (3) Results: c40 and HAc40 prevent and counteract Claudin-1 and Zo-1 damage (4) Conclusions: c40 and the functional ingredient HAc40 represent a potential non-pharmacological treatment of skin diseases associated with cutaneous dysbiosis of S. aureus. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are metabolites of gut microbes that can modulate the host inflammatory response, and contribute to health and homeostasis. Since the introduction of the gut-skin axis concept, the link between SCFAs and inflammatory skin diseases has attracted considerable attention. In this review, we have summarized the literature on the role of SCFAs in skin inflammation, and the correlation between SCFAs and inflammatory skin diseases, especially atopic dermatitis, urticaria, and psoriasis. Studies show that SCFAs are signaling factors in the gut-skin axis and can alleviate skin inflammation. The information presented in this review provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms driving gut-skin axis regulation, along with possible pathways that can be targeted for the treatment and prevention of inflammatory skin diseases. Achieving the best possible outcome for the therapy is the main goal of a medicine. Therefore, nanocarriers and co-delivery strategies were invented to meet this need, as they can benefit many diseases. This approach was applied specifically for cancer treatment, with some success. The skin is exposed to environmental challenges and contains skin-resident immune cells, including mast cells (MCs) and CD8 T cells that act as sentinels for pathogens and environmental antigens. Human skin MCs and their mediators participate in the maintenance of tissue homeostasis and regulate the recruitment and activity of immune cells involved in the pathogenesis of skin diseases. The cutaneous CD8 T cell compartment is comprised of long-persisting resident memory T cells (TRM) and migratory or recirculating cells; both populations provide durable site immune surveillance. Several lines of evidence indicate that MC-derived products, such as CCL5 and TNF-α, modulate the migration and function of CD8 T cells. Conversely, activated CD8 T cells induce the upregulation of MC costimulatory molecules. Moreover, the close apposition of MCs and CD8 T cells has been recently identified in the skin of several dermatoses, such as alopecia areata. This review outlines the current knowledge about bidirectional interactions between human MCs and CD8 T cells, analyses the alteration of their communication in the context of three common skin disorders in which these cells have been found altered in number or function—psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and vitiligo—and discusses the current unanswered questions. The skin is the main barrier between the body and the environment, protecting it from external oxidative stress induced by ultraviolet rays. It also prevents the entrance of infectious agents such as viruses, external antigens, allergens, and bacteria into our bodies. An overreaction to these agents causes severe skin diseases, including atopic dermatitis, pruritus, psoriasis, skin cancer, and vitiligo. Members of the flavonoid family include apigenin, quercetin, luteolin, and kaempferol. Of these, apigenin has been used as a dietary supplement due to its various biological activities and has been shown to reduce skin inflammation by downregulating various inflammatory markers and molecular targets. Skin disease is one of the most common diseases. Due to the intricate categories of skin diseases, their symptoms being very similar in the early stage, and the lesion samples being extremely unbalanced, their classification is challenging. At the same time, under the conditions of limited data, the generalization ability of a single reliable convolutional neural network model is weak, the feature extraction ability is insufficient, and the classification accuracy is low. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a convolutional neural network model for skin disease classification based on model fusion. Through model fusion, deep and shallow feature fusion, and the introduction of an attention module, the feature extraction capacity of the model was strengthened. In addition, a series of works such as model pre-training, data augmentation, and parameter fine-tuning were conducted to upgrade the classification performance of the model. The experimental results showed that when working on our private dataset dominated by acne-like skin diseases, our proposed model outperformed the two baseline models of DenseNet201 and ConvNeXt_L by 4.42% and 3.66%, respectively. On the public HAM10000 dataset, the accuracy and f1-score of the proposed model were 95.29% and 89.99%, respectively, which also achieved good results compared with other state-of-the-art models. Introduction: Beta-blockers are proven to be safe and cost-effective agents in treating multiple dermatological conditions, which is why they are considered as an interesting and good alternative therapeutic agent by dermatologists. To our knowledge, there has been no comprehensive systematic review to date summarizing the role of both systemic and topical beta-blockers in dermatology. Methods: In this systematic review, we aim to review recent and relevant published literature in order to provide a comprehensive evidence-based summary to inform dermatologists. Results: An electronic-based literature search was carried out during October–December 2021 in the databases PubMed (MEDLINE), SCOPUS (EMBASE), and Cochrane Library. Furthermore, bibliographic sources were also reviewed for the selected articles. We followed The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses 2020 (PRISMA) guidelines. We reviewed published literature about the role of beta-blockers in dermatology for the time period (January 2016 to December 2021). Conclusions: A total of 126 publications were retrieved from different databases, of which 59 studies were finally included in our review after excluding non-eligible literature in accordance with our inclusion and exclusion criteria. The included articles consisted of meta-analyses, systematic reviews, clinical trials, retrospective and prospective cohort studies, case–control studies, case series, and case reports. In general, data in reviewed literature showed that both systemic and topical beta-blockers were reliable and safe therapeutic options in treating different dermatoses. Their effect has been studied as a mono-therapy, also as an adjuvant therapy combined with other current disease-specific therapeutic modalities such as lasers, radiation, chemotherapy, corticosteroids, or other beta-blockers options. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, pruritic, inflammatory dermatosis that imposes significant patient and population burdens. In addition to the cutaneous signs and symptoms, growing evidence suggests that AD is systemic in nature. Certain diseases can possibly co-occur with AD as a result of coincidental exposure to similar environmental factors. However, it is also suspected that they are linked to the pathogenesis of AD through more complex genetic and immunological mechanisms, but these correlations remain less understood. It is of great need to seek explanations for the higher frequency of the number of cardiovascular, autoimmune, neurological, psychiatric, and metabolic disorders that have been observed in epidemiologic investigations among AD patients. Moreover, analysing the immunology of chronic inflammation and its correction, activation, or suppression may prevent the development of a variety of comorbidities. Positive health approaches, such as happiness, are largely unexplored in medicine, including dermatology. Taking into consideration the various happiness measures, the aims of this cross-sectional study were to assess this concept using a 1-item heuristic happiness question and its related dimensions (Satisfaction with Life, Positive and Negative Affect, Quality of Life, and Compound Psychological Capital) in outpatients with different skin diseases between December 2019 and June 2020, and to examine the link between these dimensions. Overall, 414 dermatological patients were included: 67 with psoriasis, 84 atopic eczema, 10 mastocytosis, 19 nummular eczema, 84 malignant melanoma and 150 keratinocyte carcinoma. Comparing the skin diseases, differences were observed for heuristic happiness, Positive Affect, and some domains of Quality of Life and Compound Psychological Capital. Analysing the relationship between heuristic happiness and other happiness measures, the data revealed moderate to strong correlations (r=0.30–0.46, p<0.001) and variations in the understanding of happiness between the skin diseases. Overall, the most important facet of happiness was Hope as a domain of Compound Psychological Capital. This study emphasizes the individual definition of heuristic happiness in patients with skin diseases. Skin diseases are often accompanied by physical, emotional and social problems, which may negatively impact health-related quality of life and result in skinrelated distress. It is essential to identify patients with skin-related distress within the short time-window of an outpatient dermatological visit. Therefore the onequestion screening tool, the Distress Thermometer adjusted for skin conditions, was validated in a crosssectional questionnaire study. In 2 medical centres in Amsterdam, 214 patients with a chronic skin disease were invited to complete the Distress Thermometer and additional health-related quality of life questionnaires. To validate the Distress Thermometer, the Skindex29 was used as gold standard. To test test–retest reliability, the questionnaires were answered at 2 different time-points. Severely impaired health-related quality of life was present in 30% of respondents according to the Skindex29 using a cut-off score of 44. Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses yielded an area under the curve of 0.813 (standard error 0.04, 95% confidence interval 0.74–0.89). A cutoff score ≥4 on the Distress Thermometer provided the optimal ratio of sensitivity (90.7%) to specificity (56.1%). Therefore, for general practice, a cut-off score of ≥4 on the Distress Thermometer is advised. The Distress Thermometer seems to be a rapid, valid and reliable screening tool for identifying skin-related distress in patients with a chronic skin disease in the outpatient dermatology setting. Psoriasis (PSO) and Atopic dermatitis (AD) are common inflammatory skin diseases that affect people of all ages globally. They negatively impact the quality of life (QoL) of patients in health-related aspects such as physical, psychological and mental functioning. Here, we conducted a review of studies relating to candidate biomarkers and indicators associated with QoL impairment in PSO and AD. Data research was performed using PUBMED and SCOPUS databases from inception to September 2022. Most of the included studies reported genomic or proteomic biomarkers associated with disease activity and QoL outcomes. Sociodemographic, clinical and therapeutic factors have also been implicated in deterioration of life quality in these patients. The inclusion of clinical characteristics, QoL impairment and co-diagnosis should be considered in drug development programs, since processing biomarkers based on an increased number of features in addition to drug class and disease will intensify the value of the biomarker itself, thereby maximizing the future clinical utility as a stratification tool. The skin is recognized as a peripheral lymphoid organ that plays an essential defensive action against external environmental stimuli. However, continuous stimulation of these factors causes chronic inflammation at the local site and occasionally causes tissue damage. Chronic inflammation is recognized as a trigger for systemic organ inflammation. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is influenced by various external environmental factors, such as dry conditions, chemical exposure, and microorganisms. The pathogenesis of AD involves various Th2 and proinflammatory cytokines. Recently updated studies have shown that atopic skin-derived cytokines influence systemic organ function and oncogenesis. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory and immune-mediated skin disease with a complex pathophysiology and still represents a therapeutic challenge, owing to limited responses to available treatments. However, recent advances in the understanding of AD pathophysiology have led to the discovery of several new potential therapeutic targets, and research in the field of new molecules with therapeutic perspectives is boiling, with more than 70 new promising drugs in development. The aim of this systematic review is to provide the state of the art on the current knowledge concerning the pathophysiology of the disease and on novel agents currently being investigated for AD, and to highlight which type of evolution is going to take place in therapeutic approaches of atopic dermatitis in the coming years. Background: Data on the burden and clinical epidemiology of skin wounds in rural sub-Saharan Africa is scant. The scale of the problem including preventable progression to chronic wounds, disability and systemic complications is largely unaddressed. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study combining active (household-based survey) and passive case finding (health services-based survey) to determine the burden and clinical epidemiology of wounds within the Taabo Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) in rural Côte d'Ivoire. Patients identified with wounds received free care and were invited to participate in the wound management study simultaneously carried out in the survey area. The data were analysed for wound prevalence, stratified by wound and patient characteristics. Results: 3842 HDSS-registered persons were surveyed. Overall wound prevalence derived from combined active and passive case finding was 13.0%. 74.1% (403/544) of patients were below the age of 15 years. Most frequent aetiologies were mechanical trauma (85.3%), furuncles (5.1%), burns (2.9%) and Buruli ulcer (2.2%). Most wounds were acute and smaller than 5 cm2 in size. 22.0% (176/799) of wounds showed evidence of secondary bacterial infection. 35.5% (22/62) of chronic wounds had persisted entirely neglected for years. Buruli ulcer prevalence was 2.3 per 1000 individuals and considerably higher than expected from an annual incidence of 0.01 per 1000 individuals as reported by WHO for Côte d'Ivoire at the time of the study. Conclusions: Skin wounds are highly prevalent in rural West Africa, where they represent a widely neglected problem. The HDSS-based survey with combined active and passive case finding adopted in this study provides a better estimate than school- and health institution-based surveys which underestimate the frequency of skin wounds and, particularly, of neglected tropical diseases of the skin, such as Buruli ulcer and yaws. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin disease with a complex pathophysiology, intertwining immune dysregulation, epidermal barrier dysfunction, IgE sensitization, environmental factors and genetic predisposition. It has been recently identified that interleukins -4 and -13 play crucial roles in the type-2-driven inflammation that characterizes AD, contributing to its symptomatology. Objectives: To investigate hospital admissions in England and Wales due to infections and diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Methods: Data from the Patient Episode Database for Wales (PEDW) and the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) database in England for the years between April 1999 and April 2020 were used in this study. Using all the relevant diagnosis codes (L00–L99), hospital admissions related to various skin infections and diseases of the subcutaneous tissue were identified. Results: Hospital admissions for all causes increased overall by 78.8%, from 276,464 in 1999 to 494,433 in 2020, representing an increase in hospital admission rate of 56.1% (from 530.23 (95% CI 528.26–532.20) in 1999 to 827.92 (95% CI 825.62–830.22) per 100,000 people in 2020, p ≤ 0.05). The most prevalent diagnoses were disorders of the skin's appendages, infections of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, and other disorders of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Nearly half of all hospital admissions were for males and for patients between the ages of 15 and 59. In 2020, the hospital admission rate for males increased by 60.2%, from 540.16 (95% CI 537.32–543.01) per 100,000 people in 1999 to 865.10 (95% CI 861.76–868.44) in 2020. From 520.75 (95% CI 518.02–523.48) in 1999 to 791.03 (95% CI 787.86–794.19) in 2020, the hospital admission rate for females grew by 51.9%. Conclusion: Hospital admission due to infections and disorders of the skin and subcutaneous tissue increased during the past two decades in England and Wales. Further studies are needed to explore the risk factors associated with infections and disorders of the skin and subcutaneous tissue complications, and its associated admissions. The Kelch-like erythroid cell-derived protein with cap'n'collar homology-associated protein 1 (KEAP1)-nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (NRF2) system, a thiol-based sensor-effector apparatus, exerts antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects and maintains skin homeostasis. Thus, NRF2 activation appears to be a promising treatment option for various skin diseases. However, NRF2-mediated defense responses may deteriorate skin inflammation in a context-dependent manner. Atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis are two common chronic inflammatory skin diseases caused by a defective skin barrier, dysregulated immune responses, genetic predispositions, and environmental factors. Rashes and skin lesions are a common reason for patient visits to emergency departments and physicians' offices. The differential diagnosis includes a variety of infectious and non-infectious diseases, some of which can be life-threatening. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the quantity and type of skin lesions among outpatients and inpatients at a tertiary care university-affiliated teaching hospital for infectious diseases over a three-year period to assess disease burden and physicians' experience in diagnosing skin lesions. Diagnoses (by ICD-10 codes) were classified into three groups: infectious diseases that include skin lesions, non-infectious skin lesions and undiagnosed skin lesions. During the observed period, out of the total of 142,416 outpatients, 14.8% presented with some form of skin lesion. Among them, 68% had skin lesions inherent to infectious disease, 10.8% suffered from non-infectious skin lesions and 21.2% remained with undiagnosed skin lesions. The most common infectious diagnoses were chickenpox, herpes zoster and unspecified viral infections characterized by skin and mucous membrane lesions. The most common non-infectious diagnoses were urticaria and atopic dermatitis. Overall, the most common individual diagnosis (ICD-10 code) was "nonspecific skin eruption" (n = 4448, 21.1%), which was followed by chickenpox and herpes zoster. Among the 17,401 patients hospitalized over the observed period, 13.1% had skin lesion as the main reason for hospitalization, almost all (97.5%) of which were infectious in etiology. The most common diagnoses were cellulitis, erysipelas and herpes zoster. The presented data suggest that the burden of diseases presenting with skin lesions is significant in everyday infectious disease practice, but the overwhelming number of undiagnosed patients implies the need for further education in this area.
