Previous studies have demonstrated that vegetation‐generated turbulence can enhance erosion rate and reduce the velocity threshold for erosion of non‐cohesive sediment. This study considered whether vegetation‐generated turbulence had a similar influence on natural cohesive sediment. Cores were collected from a black mangrove forest with aboveground biomass and exposed to stepwise increases in velocity. Erosion was recorded through suspended sediment concentration. For the same velocity, cores with pneumatophores had elevated turbulent kinetic energy compared to bare cores without pneumatophores. However, the vegetation‐generated turbulence did not increase bed stress or the rate of resuspension, relative to bare cores. It was hypothesized that the short time‐scale fluctuations associated with vegetation‐generated turbulence were not of sufficient duration to break cohesion between grains, explaining why elevated levels of turbulence associated with the pneumatophores had no impact on the erosion threshold or rate. In order to investigate the impact of marine propeller wake fields on sediment siltation in shallow water channels, this study employs the unsteady RANS approach and the Volume of Fluid model. A full-scale numerical self-propulsion test was conducted on a 50,000 DWT oil tanker under the influence of a free surface. The research includes forecasting the effect of propeller wakes on sediment redeposition following the dredging of the approach channel to Jiaxing Port in the China Sea. Initially, uncertainty research was carried out on the full-scale ship and propeller system, and the credibility of the computational results was quantified. The simulated results based on the sediment transport numerical model were then compared and validated against actual data from monitoring stations. The self-propulsion performance and the velocity distribution of the propeller wake were examined under three different propeller speeds. Scenarios simulated included no ship navigation, daily single-ship navigation, and daily two-ship navigation, evaluating the siltation distribution within the channel over one month. The results demonstrate that ship propeller wakes positively influence the reduction of channel sedimentation, with the maximum monthly siltation reduction reaching 0.108 m during single-ship tidal navigation and 0.11 m during two-ship tidal navigation. Fine-grained cohesive sediments in estuaries play a critical role in sediment transport and biogeochemical cycles in estuaries. Due to the convergence of marine saltwater and freshwater runoff, combined with periodic tidal cycles, fine-grained sediments exhibit intricate flocculation processes that are challenging to simulate. A size-resolved flocculation module using a bin-based scheme aids in modeling these processes but is hindered by high computational costs. In this study, we develop a new spectrum-based scheme based on the spectral shape of floc size distribution from the original bin-based scheme to expedite modeling execution. This new scheme is implemented in the Stony Brook Parallel Ocean Model (sbPOM) and applied to simulate fine-grained sediment transport in the Hudson River estuary. The effectiveness of this spectrum-based scheme is assessed by comparing its simulations with observations and results from the original bin-based scheme. The findings indicate that the new scheme can simulate the evolution of suspended sediment concentration well at a specific point by comparisons with in-situ observations. Specifically, the results of the 50 paired experiments show an average percentage difference of 1.86% and an average speedup ratio of 4.51 times compared to the original bin-based scheme. In summary, the new spectrum-based scheme offers significant acceleration benefits for the size-resolved flocculation module and has the potential for widespread application in simulating fine-grained sediments in estuaries. This study aims to investigate the hydrodynamic-morphological interactions on a microtidal intermediate-dissipative beach under low to moderate wave energy conditions using field measurements during two climatic seasons. The separate contributions of currents, sea-swell waves, and infragravity waves to high- and low-frequency sediment fluxes were analyzed. The infragravity wave energy was more relevant near the swash zone than in other areas. Although the currents are the primary suspended sediment transport mechanism, the results suggest that the waves are an important driver of sediment suspension from the seabed. The results indicate that Sea-Swell (SS) waves and cross-shore currents are the prevailing hydrodynamic factors in nearshore sediment transport, and the cross-shore suspended sediment transport rates are higher than those in alongshore transport. The submerged bar intensified during the wet season (1–4 November 2018) when the wave height intensities were lower, contrary to the dry season (24–25 March 2018). Significant accretion nearshore was identified (in the subaerial beach) during the wet season when the suspended sediments were greater, the SS-wave heights nearshore were lower, and sediment flux was directed onshore. A notorious erosion was distinguished during the dry season. The most representative volume changes occurred during the dry season (with high erosion), which is attributed to the high SS-wave energy. Beach–dune systems are highly dynamic features of the coastal system, the evolution of which is influenced by several processes that occur at very different spatial and temporal scales. To mitigate shoreline retreat that threatens extensive coastal areas worldwide, coastal erosion mitigation measures are implemented, aiming to make coastal areas resilient to the effects induced by coastal erosion and the anticipated climate change related to storms, flood events and sea level rise. Numerical modelling can support planned and sustainable coastal management from a medium-to-long-term perspective (decades). This research focuses on presenting contributions regarding the numerical modelling of subaerial beach dynamics (berm width and dune systems interactions) from a medium-term perspective. The method applied is based on a combination of the results of two simplified numerical models (the LTC and CS-Model). The results demonstrate the potential of the proposed combined model for medium-term projections, allowing for the interpretation of beach–dune dynamics and the evaluation of the importance of longshore and cross-shore sediment transport processes. This study examines the spatial pattern of fractional sediment mobility and assesses the influence of morphologic units on bedload transport in a small pool‐riffle reach with limited supply. Using a 2D hydraulic model and a subsurface‐based sediment transport model, shear stresses, fractional sediment mobility, and bedload transport were examined for flow events ranging in magnitude between 0.2Qbf and 1.5Qbf. Results reveal that while spatial variations in shear stress decrease as discharge increases, only a small proportion of the bed experiences high transport rates. At the reach scale, riffles are the primary morphological unit contributing to fully mobile sediment for all size fractions. However, at a subunit scale, there is evidence of sediment transport reversal for grains >32 mm at flows near or exceeding bankfull discharge in association with shear stress reversal. These transport reversals are important for maintaining pools despite their infrequent occurrence in the study reach. Sediment transport maps indicate that bed morphology considerably influences sediment transport at low to moderate flows. During these events, the shear stress is sensitive to local bed topography and partial mobility is the dominant transport process. In contrast, variations in bedload transport rates decrease during high flows when the flow is less sensitive to variations in bed topography and the bed becomes fully mobile. In this paper, an Eulerian two-phase-flow model sedFoam is extended to include an air phase together with the water and sediment phases. The numerical model called sedInterFoam is implemented using the open source library OpenFOAM. SedInterFoam includes the previous features of sedFoam for sediment transport modeling and also solves the air/water interface using the volume of fluid method coupled with the waves2Foam toolbox for free surface wave generation and absorption. Using sedInterFoam, four test cases are successfully reproduced to validate the free-surface evolution algorithm implementation, mass conservation of sediment and fluid phases, predictive capabilities and demonstrate its potential in modelling a broader range of coastal applications with sediment transport dominated by surface waves. The present study evaluates the performance of two numerical approaches in estimating non-equilibrium scour patterns around a non-slender square structure subjected to a transient wave, by comparing numerical findings with experimental data. This study also investigates the impact of the structure's positioning on bed evolution, analyzing configurations where the structure is either attached to the sidewall or positioned at the centerline of the wave flume. The first numerical method treats sediment particles as a distinct continuum phase, directly solving the continuity and momentum equations for both sediment and fluid phases. The second method estimates sediment transport using the quadratic law of bottom shear stress, yielding robust predictions of bed evolution through meticulous calibration and validation. The findings reveal that both methods underestimate vortex-induced near-bed vertical velocities. Deposits formed along vortex trajectories are overestimated by the first method, while the second method satisfactorily predicts the bed evolution beneath these paths. Scour holes caused by wave impingement tend to backfill as the flow intensity diminishes. The second method cannot sufficiently capture this backfilling, whereas the first method adequately reflects the phenomenon. Overall, this study highlights significant variations in the predictive capabilities of both methods in regard to the evolution of non-equilibrium scour at low Keulegan–Carpenter numbers. Soil erosion monitoring is essential for the ecological evaluation and dynamic monitoring of land resources via remote sensing technology. In this paper, we provide new insights into the existing problems and development directions of traditional models, which are supported by new technologies. An important role is played by remote sensing information acquisition technology in the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of soil erosion, and the data and technical support provided are systematically reviewed. We provide a detailed overview of the research progress associated with empirical statistical models and physically driven process models of soil erosion, and the limitations of their application are also summarized. The preliminary integration of remote sensing data sources with high spatial and temporal resolution and new technologies for soil erosion monitoring enables the high-precision quantitative estimation of sediment transport trajectories, the watershed river network density, and the terrain slope, enhancing the accuracy of erosion factor identification, such as spectral feature recognition from erosion information, gully erosion feature extraction, and vegetation coverage estimation. However, the current erosion models, driven by algorithms and models, are not comprehensive enough, particularly in terms of the spatial feature extraction of erosion information, and there are limitations in the applicability and accurate estimation of such models. The aim of this study is to identify the main pollutants and evaluate the mechanisms of sediment transport from land to sea. This goal is justified by environmental pollution in the area associated with dredging and port activities. The objective is planned to be achieved by investigating the geochemical behavior of major and trace elements in fourteen surface sediment samples collected along the Moroccan Atlantic coast, from the mouth of the Lukkous River to the coast between the cities of Larache and Moulay Bousselam. k0-standardization method of neutron activation analysis using neutrons of the Moroccan Triga Mark II research reactor at the National Centre for Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology, has been used for analysis of collected sediment samples. The enrichment factor analysis revealed high levels of arsenic and chlorine, along with significant calcium enrichment, were found along the Atlantic coast. The enrichment factors (FE) for arsenic and chlorine are in the range of 20 < FE < 40, and for calcium, the FE is in the range of 5 < FE < 20. Conversely, some elements exhibited little to no enrichment, suggesting a crustal origin. PCA helped in synthesizing these findings, providing a clearer understanding of the spatial variations in sediment composition based on their multi-elemental signatures. The research examines surface sediments along the Moroccan Atlantic coast, revealing current contamination levels and geochemical behavior. These findings, applicable to similar coastal environments, are crucial for monitoring and managing sediment quality, especially in areas affected by erosion. Additionally, dredging and port activities in this region significantly disturb the sediments, resuspending contaminants and altering sediment composition, which further exacerbates pollution issues. This study offers a comprehensive geochemical characterization of coastal sediments in Morocco, enhancing understanding of sediment contamination and geochemical processes, with implications for environmental protection and sustainable marine resource management. Background: Floods, especially flash floods, are the major transporting agent for fluvial sediments, whose pollution is a global concern. As floods result in the dispersion of and exposure to these sediments, a profound understanding of sedimentary dynamics during flood events and the related pollutant dispersion is of relevance. However, the characteristics of extreme flood events concerning pollutant dynamics are insufficiently known so far. Results: In a Central European catchment impacted by intense industrial activities and former mining, over the course of five years, we surveyed six high-discharge events, five of them approx. bankfull discharge and one major flash flood event, supplemented by sampling of bank sediments. Fluvial sediments were analyzed for elemental composition by X-Ray fluorescence and for grain size distribution of the fine faction by laser diffraction. By applying a local enrichment factor, trace metal(loid) signatures in these sample sets were compared. Furthermore, Positive Matrix Factorization was used to investigate the trace metal(loid)s' sources. The sediments deposited by minor flooding had continual trace metal(loid) signatures. However, for the extreme event, significant divergencies arose and persisted for the following years: The enrichment of anthropogenically influenced elements increased, with a slowly decreasing trend in the subsequent two years. Naturally dominated metal(oid)s decrease in enrichment without indicating a return to original levels. In contrast, other elements were insensitive to the extreme event. Positive Matrix Factorization identified anthropogenic influences in elements originating from copper and lead processing and mining activities. Furthermore, bed sediments and a natural background factor were found to dominate the non-anthropogenically influenced metal(loid)s. Conclusions: In between extreme events, winnowing processes slowly alter the elemental composition of bed sediments. The depletion of such sediments due to the flash flood proves catchment-wide flushing, which induces a natural resetting of the geochemical signals. This ability to renew is an integral part of resilience in fluvial systems. This mechanism is disturbed by industrial activities in floodplains. The exceptional flooding reaches infrastructure that is assumed to be safe and, therefore, unprotected. These additional sources can shift flood sediments' trace metal(loid) signature, which has a long-lasting impact on the catchment sediments. The quantification of the erodibility of cohesive sediments is fundamental for an advanced understanding of estuarine sediment transport processes. In this study, the surface erosion threshold tc for cohesive sediments collected from two sites in the area of the Port of Hamburg in the River Elbe is investigated in laboratory experiments. An improved closed microcosm system (C-GEMS) is used for the erosion experiments, which allows the accumulation of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) over an experimental run. A total of 34 erosion experiments has been conducted with homogenized samples and bulk densities between 1050 kg/m³ and 1250 kg/m³. The covered range of bulk densities is seen to represent the values commonly exhibited by freshly deposited cohesive sediments. Two approaches to derive tc based on the erosion rate (e-method) and the SSC (SSC-method) were elaborated and compared. For both approaches, only one parameter has to be set in order to facilitate transferability to other devices. The results show a better performance of the SSC-method in terms of lower uncertainties, especially at the upper application limits of the utilized C-GEMS. The application of the SSCmethod yields values for tc between 0.037 N/m² and 0.305 N/m², continuously increasing with bulk density. Repetition tests proved the repeatability of the experimental procedure and utilized methods to derive tc. The derived data for tc is used to fit two mathematical models: i) a highly empirical model relating tc to dry bulk density and ii) a recently proposed model relating tc to the physical properties of the sediment-mixture. While the derived parameters for the first model vary widely for the two sampling sites, the fit-parameter for the lattermodel is virtually independent of the investigated site, suggesting the superiority of this approach. Silt-rich meltwater plume deposits (MPDs) analyzed from marine sediment cores have elucidated relationships that are clearly connected, yet difficult to constrain, between subglacial hydrology, ice-marginal landforms, and grounding-zone retreat patterns for several glacial catchments. Few attempts have been made to infer details of subglacial hydrology, such as flow regime, geometry of drainage pathways, and mode(s) of sediment transport through time, from grain-scale characteristics of MPDs. Using sediment samples from MPD, till, and grounding-zone proximal diamicton collected offshore of six modern and relict glacial catchments in both hemispheres, we examine grain shape distributions and microtextures (collectively, grain micromorphology) of the silt fraction to explore whether grains are measurably altered from their subglacial sources via meltwater action. We find that 75 % of all imaged grains (n = 9400) can be described by 25 % of the full range of measured shape morphometrics, indicating grain shape homogenization through widespread and efficient abrasive processes in subglacial environments. Although silt grains from MPDs exhibit edge rounding more often than silt grains from tills, grain surface textures indicative of fluvial transport (e.g., v-shaped percussions) occur in only a modest number of grains. Furthermore, MPD grain surfaces retain several textures consistent with transport beneath glacial ice (e.g., straight or arcuate steps, (sub)linear fractures) in comparable abundances to till grains. Significant grain shape alteration in MPDs compared to their till sources is observed in sediments from glacial regions where (1) high-magnitude, potentially catastrophic meltwater drainage events are inferred from marine sediment records and (2) submarine landforms suggest supraglacial melt contributed to the subglacial hydrological budget. This implies that quantifiable grain shape alteration in MPDs could reflect a combination of high-energy flow of subglacial meltwater, persistent sediment entrainment, and/or long sediment transport distances through subglacial drainage pathways. Integrating grain micromorphology into analysis of MPDs in site-specific studies could therefore aid in distinguishing periods of persistent, well-connected subglacial discharge from periods of sluggish or disorganized drainage. In the wider context of deglacial marine sedimentary and bathymetric records, a grain micromorphological approach may bolster our ability to characterize ice response to subglacial meltwater transmission through time. This work additionally demonstrates that glacial and fluvial surface textures are retained on silt-sized quartz grains in adequate amounts for microtexture analysis, which has heretofore been conducted exclusively on the sand fraction. The feature of self-cleansing in sewer pipes is a standard requirement in the design of drainage systems, as sediments deposited on the channel bottom cause changes in channel geometric properties and in hydrodynamic parameters, including the friction caused by the cohesive forces of sediment fractions. Here, it is shown that the content of cohesive fractions significantly inhibits the transport of non-cohesive sediments. This paper presents an advanced calculation procedure for estimating flushing flows in channels. This procedure is based on innovative predictive models developed for non-cohesive and granulometrically heterogeneous sediment transport with additional cohesive fraction content to estimate the magnitude of increased flow necessary to ensure self-cleansing of channels. The computations according to the proposed procedure were carried out for a wide range of hydrodynamic conditions, two grain diameters, six cohesive (clay) fraction additive contents and two critical stress values. Confluences are dynamic morphological nodes that are found in all river networks. In mountain regions, they are influenced by hydraulic and sedimentary processes that occur in steep channels during extreme events in small watersheds. Sediment transport in the tributary channel and aggradation in the confluence can be massive, potentially causing overbank flooding and sedimentation into adjacent settlement areas. Previous works dealing with confluences have mainly focused on lowland regions, and those that have focused on mountain areas have used sediment concentrations and channel gradients that are largely under-representative of mountain river conditions. The presented work contributes to filling this research gap with 45 experiments that use a large-scale physical model. Geometric model parameters, the applied grain size distribution, and the considered discharges represent the conditions at 135 confluences in South Tyrol (Italy) and Tyrol (Austria). The experimental program allowed for a comprehensive analysis of the effects of (i) the confluence angle, (ii) the tributary gradient, (iii) the channel discharges, and (iv) the tributary sediment concentration. In contrast to most research dealing with confluences, results indicate that, in the presence of an intense tributary sediment supply and a small tributary-to-main-channel discharge ratio (0.1), the confluence angle does not have a decisive effect on confluence morphology. Adjustments to the tributary channel gradient yielded the same results. A reoccurring range of depositional geomorphic units was observed in which a deposition cone transitioned to a bank-attached bar. The confluence morphology and tributary channel gradient rapidly adjusted, tending towards an equilibrium state to accommodate both water discharges and the sediment load from the tributary. Statistical analyses demonstrated that the confluence morphology was controlled by the combined channel discharge and the depositional or erosional extent was controlled by the sediment concentration. Applying conclusions drawn from lowland confluence dynamics could misrepresent depositional and erosional patterns and the related flood hazard at mountain river confluences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Humans have influenced the sediment transport of rivers on a centurial scale. Our goal was to use the rate of lateral channel processes as a proxy to reconstruct sediment budget (SB) changes of a lowland river (Middle Tisza, Hungary) on a historical scale (1838–2017). The gross sediment budget (GSB) refers to the total area of eroded and accumulated surfaces, and the net sediment budget (NSB) indicates the sediment sink or source characteristics. At the beginning (1838–1890), the artificial cut-offs increased the slope and channel erosion, but the eroded sediment deposited in the oxbows, so the reach acted as a sediment sink (NSB: +0.1–0.8 m2/m/y). Then (1890–1929), a quasi-equilibrium state developed (NSB: −0.2 m2/m/y to +0.4 m2/m/y). Later (1929–1976), the bank protections impeded lateral erosion, so the system became a sediment sink again (NSB: +0.1–0.7 m2/m/y). Finally (1976–2017), the erosional processes accelerated due to dam construction and revetment collapses, and now the river is a sediment source (NSB: −0.03 to −0.08 m2/m/y). This study proved that (1) the actual SB could not be projected in the long term, as it was heavily modified, and (2) lateral channel changes could be used as a proxy to estimate long-term SB. The initiation threshold of sediment motion, a key component in quantifying sediment transport, has potential link to intermittent turbulence bursts. Here, we elaborated in situ experiments on coastal sea bottom covered with cohesive sediments, to obtain intermittency parameters. The variable "waiting time" between turbulence bursts was utilized to capture the occurrence of sediment initiation events in natural waters. A relationship between waiting time and shear stress reveals the different intermittency features of sediment flux time series before and after reaching the threshold, which can be used to determine the initiation threshold of sediment motion. Multi‐site results demonstrate the limitations of traditional empirical formulae for fine‐grained sediments, where cohesiveness becomes more pronounced as grain size decreases and the deviation can reach 600%. The empirical formula was modified using grain size, and the modified calculations were in good agreement with observed values, which will greatly assist in sediment transport and geomorphology model predictions. Plain Language Summary: As an on‐off switch for sediment transport, sediment initiation determines the redistribution of matter and the geomorphological evolution. Researchers have confirmed a link between intermittency and sediment initiation, yet how to parameterize and utilize has not been studied in depth. Here, the ability to capture sediment initiation events using intermittency metrics is verified for the first time with numerous in situ observations of high‐resolution velocity and sediment concentration data. Furthermore, a new procedure of utilizing field data to determine the initiation threshold was proposed by using the distribution relationship between the bottom shear stress and intermittency metric. Increasing differences between the newly determined threshold and empirical formula results correlate with the decrease in grain size. Such knowledge greatly helps improve the accuracy of threshold determination which in turn contributes to the accurate prediction of sediment transport models and thus engineering applications. Introduction: Sediment bypass tunnels (SBTs) are operated during floods to reestablish sediment continuity past dams with the ultimate goal of decreasing accumulation in reservoirs. Depending on the location of the intake structure and operational conditions, SBTs may release either bed load-laden or bed load-free flows in the form of sudden floods (pulses). When evaluating the impacts of SBTs, the traditional approach has been to monitor channel changes in the years following project completion. However, by the time these impacts become evident, mitigation is challenging. Methods: This research adopts a forward-thinking methodology, emphasizing the prediction of potential impacts during the project's early planning stages. We use a one-dimensional morphodynamic model to forecast the potential morphological response of a gravel-bed river with an idealized geometry to a series of SBT operations characteristic of projects in the Swiss Alps. Results: The morphological response of the downstream reach over the medium to long term is influenced by the alternating pattern of bed load-laden and bed load-free flow releases. Sediment deposition at the bottom of artificial reservoirs has become a worldwide problem. This comprises a dual issue that is, in the first place, associated with the reduction in storage capacity and lifetime of large reservoirs. The second aspect comprises the threat that the sediment represents for the dam structure. This research is mainly aimed at identifying and inferring the main sediments' triggering processes through a rigorous analysis of deposition shapes in a large reservoir. For identifying the main deposition shapes, a sequential methodology was designed and developed comprising the following stages. First, an analysis of XYZ cartography from bathymetric development was conducted. Then, a shapes categorization was developed that comprises the identification of six types of shapes based on four parameters: slope continuity, slope break, absolute and relative slope, and arc configuration. The third stage comprised a visualization and spatial calculation of shapes through GIS-based cartography. The fourth stage comprised an interpretation of deposition shapes processes: for that, a dual analysis was developed. First, an analysis based on fluvial sediments transport processes was realized. The second stage implied an analysis of the dam influence on fluvial hydrodynamics and sediments transport. Results comprised a quantitative assessment of each shape as well as physical processes identification and interpretation, generating a robust equivalence between shapes and triggering processes. This research proved successful for the identification and characterization of the main deposition and transport processes that may help to prevent, palliate, and/or correct phenomenon of silting in large reservoirs. This paper presents a review of cross-shore sediment transport for non-cohesive sediments in the coastal zone. The principles of sediment incipient motion are introduced. Formulations for the estimation of bedload transport are presented, for currents and combined waves and current flows. A method to consider the effect of sediment heterogeneity on transport, using the hiding–exposure coefficient and hindrance factor, is depicted. Climate change and human activities exert significant influence on the water–sediment relationship in arid and semi-arid regions. Therefore, comprehending the underlying mechanisms is crucial for the effective management of water and soil resources, as well as integrated watershed management. This research focuses on the Kuye River watershed (KYH_W) in the middle reaches of the Yellow River in China, along with its sub-watersheds Wangdaohengtazi (WDHT_SW) and Xinmiaosi (XM_SW). This paper utilizes the Mann–Kendall non-parametric test and the double cumulative curve method to examine the interannual trends of runoff, sediment transport, precipitation, temperature, and NDVI factors. Furthermore, the method of the slope change ratio of cumulative quantity (SCRCQ) is utilized to quantitatively evaluate the impacts and contribution rates of climate change and human activities on water–sediment changes within each watershed. The results are as follows: (1) From 1969 to 2019, the entire watershed experienced a significant decrease in both runoff and sediment transport, with 1997 marking the year of abrupt change. However, following 2012, the KYH_W and WDHT_SW exhibited a noticeable rebound in runoff. (2) Human activities predominantly contribute to the reduction in water and sediment in the watershed. (3) After the abrupt change, between 1998 and 2011, the contribution rates of climate change and human activities to the annual runoff reduction in the entire KYH_W reached 33% and 64%, respectively. Moreover, these rates for sediment transport reduction reached 26% and 74%, respectively. Subsequently, after 2012, the contribution rates of both factors to the increase in watershed runoff reached 29% and 71%, respectively. Factors other than the NDVI, within human activities, played a dominant role in augmenting the watershed's runoff. (4) Prior to 2011, changes in vegetation cover resulting from the Grain for Green Program, as measured by the NDVI, emerged as the primary factor responsible for reduced runoff in the watershed. Conversely, factors other than the NDVI assumed dominance in reducing sediment transport. The SCRCQ method offers a quantitative approach to assessing water–sediment changes. Based on this method, the study further underscores the substantial impacts of climate change and human activities on variations in runoff and sediment transport within the KYH_W in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. The occurrence and level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mangrove sediment from Ifiekporo Creek in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria, were assessed in this study. The extraction of PAHs from the sediment samples was achieved using the PAH analytical test method (USEPA 8270). This method measures the individual concentrations of extractable PAHs in samples. The PAHs were quantified within the C11-C22 subgroup. The basic GC parameters for the analysis of polyaromatic hydrocarbons were analysed using a gas chromatography‒mass selective detector (GC‒MSD). The individual PAH concentrations in the mangrove sediment samples ranged from 850 µg/kg−1 to 3470 µg/kg−1. PAH source apportionment employing isomeric ratios and multivariate statistics indicated both pyrogenic and petrogenic source inputs in the sediment samples. The order of PAH homology in the sediment was 3-ring > 2-ring > 4-ring. The sediment samples were mostly dominated by LMW PAHs. The results of the ecological risk assessment in the study area indicate that there is low ecological risk associated with PAH exposure in sediment. These results provide data on the concentrations and compositional patterns of PAHs, which is useful for understanding the effects, sources, fates, and transport of PAHs in sediment in the study area, as well as for providing relevant information for environmental quality management and forensic studies. The Inner Mongolia section of the Yellow River is a primary alluvial segment of the main channel. The variations in water and sediment not only alter the cross-sectional morphology and flow capacity of the river but also impact the scheduling of upstream cascade reservoirs. Based on runoff and sediment load data and topographic information from typical hydrological stations, the characteristics of runoff and sediment load variations and the evolutionary pattern of siltation in the Inner Mongolia River section were analyzed via trend analysis methods, Mann–Kendall test methods, the sediment load transport rate method, and the water level–flow relationship. The results showed that the water and sediment loads at the hydrological stations in the Inner Mongolia River section significantly changed from the 1960s to after 2000, with runoff decreasing by approximately 22% to 32% and the sediment load decreasing by approximately 65% to 73%. Sedimentation in the river section generally increased, and the average annual siltation amount reached 0.144 billion t. The joint utilization of the Longyangxia and Liujiaxia reservoirs in 1987 was the main reason for the rapid increase in siltation, and siltation in the Inner Mongolia River section was slightly reduced after 2005. In addition, the critical sediment load coefficients of the Bayangaole–Sanhuhekou and Sanhuhekou–Toudaoguai River sections were 0.0073 and 0.0051 kg·s/m6, respectively, from 1952 to 1968, and 0.0053 and 0.0037 kg·s/m6, respectively, from 1969 to 2020. Feedbacks between sediment and plants in the submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) beds of the Susquehanna Flats help modulate sediment delivery into the upper Chesapeake Bay from its major tributary (Susquehanna River). Recent modeling work has shown that SAV can steer the river plume, directly controlling sediment transport and fate. However, transport mechanisms likely differ between flood and non‐flood conditions and depend on event timing. An opportunity to evaluate these insights in the field occurred with several flood events in summer 2018. Sediment and biomass samples were collected after the flood in the large, continuous main SAV bed of the Flats and in smaller patches to the west of the main bed to evaluate the effect of SAV bed size (width). Sediment characteristics (grain size, organic content) and deposition rates were compared to previous observations during non‐flood conditions in the main bed in 2014–2015 and in the smaller patches in 2019. Overall, sediment deposition rates could be predicted by an empirical model including sediment load, vegetation biomass, and SAV bed width, reflecting the role of vegetation in steering the Susquehanna River plume and modulating sediment input to the upper Chesapeake Bay. Understanding spatiotemporal patterns of sedimentation is essential for realistic estimates of sediment and nutrient (especially nitrogen and carbon) storage in freshwater SAV systems, which have not received as much attention as their saltwater counterparts. Sandy beaches high in recreation value make up 16% of the over 4000 km long shoreline of Estonia. The shore processes associated with climate change have remarkably accelerated over recent decades. Many sandy shores have suffered from strong erosion, including an excellent former beach at Valgeranna. The jetties, which were built in the 1860s to protect the navigation channel of Port Pärnu from clogging, have prevented natural sediment transport along the coast from south to north. At the same time, the sandy beach in Pärnu is expanding, and part of the sand accumulates with strong storms also in between the jetties, reducing the width of the shipping channel. The channel needs regular dredging, but, so far, the dredged sediment has been taken far away to the open sea and accumulated on the seabed. The current paper addresses the possibilities of using that sand for beach restoration in destructed and eroded areas. An overview of the applied methods and measurements during field studies is given. The results of modelling the processes of wave activity and sediment transport are discussed. The recycling of shore sediments is an important measure in sustainable coastal zone management. Different options and scenarios are analysed in order to find the most reasonable ways to bring sand back onto beaches and stabilize natural processes. Despite the environmental significance and ecological importance of cohesive sediment (<63 μm), improved knowledge of how effective particle size distributions (EPSDs) change due to flocculation under different conditions of shear stress and bed configuration is required to better understand in situ transport and storage properties and refine existing sediment transport models. Here, a rotating annular flume was used to (i) evaluate EPSDs under different shear stress and bed types (plane-impermeable and -porous gravel bed) for deposition and erosion experiments; (ii) assess flocculation processes with EPSDs; and (iii) compare flume and field EPSDs observations with respect to measured shear stress. While deposition experiments over the impermeable bed led to an EPSD equilibrium in all shear conditions (constant EPSD percentiles), the ingress experiment over the gravel bed resulted in varying EPSDs, and no equilibrium was observed. During the erosion experiment, deposited flocs became coarser due to bed consolidation, and no particle breakage was observed once particles were resuspended. The ingress experiment showed high efficiency in entrapping suspended particles (~95% of initial suspended sediment), and no exfiltration or resuspension was recorded. Flocculation ratios calculated using EPSDs showed negative correlations with shear stress, indicating that increasing flow energy promoted flocculation for flume and field observations. Our results showed that both suspended and bed sediments can flocculate into coarser flocs that, in turn, are preferentially ingressed and stored in the substrate when in suspension. These findings have important implications regarding legacy impacts, as substrate-stored particles can potentially extend the effects of upstream landscape disturbances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 2021 Navalacruz wildfire occurred in a mountainous area in the Sistema Central (Spain). Despite having an average low severity index (dNBR), the loss of vegetation cover associated with the fire was responsible for a high rate of sedimentation in the rivers and streams. Additionally, the burned area affected up to 60 cultural heritage sites, including archaeological and ethnological sites, and damage ranged from burnt pieces of wood to the burial of archaeological sites. In the present work, we document and analyze the post-fire evolution in several rivers and streams. This is based on a field survey of infiltration rates, hydrodynamic modeling, and the study of channel morphological changes. Our analysis revealed how the first post-fire rains caused the mobilization and transport of ashes. This created hydrophobicity in the soils, resulting in large amounts of materials being transported to rivers and streams by subsequent medium- and low-magnitude storms. A hydrological and hydraulic model of the study catchments under pre- and post-fire conditions suggests that these trends are a consequence of a post-fire increase in flow rates for similar rainfall scenarios. In this respect, our estimates point at a significant increase in sediment transport capacities associated with this post-fire increase in flow rates. The combination of locally steep slopes with high-severity fire patches, and a considerable regolith (derived from pre-fire weathering), resulted in a series of cascading responses, such as an exacerbated supply of sand to the drainage network and the triggering of debris flows, followed by erosion and entrenchment. An integrated current–wave–sediment model is developed for coastal and estuary applications. The new model aims to improve the existing ones in both the physical process representation and the numerical techniques. Two areas of improvements are emphasized: the numerical procedure and a new general sediment sub-model. The numerical procedure adopts the one-model one-mesh approach to improve the model accuracy, efficiency and user friendliness. One model is developed which includes three major sub-models: current flow, wave dynamics and sediment transport. The three are tightly coupled during the solution process by exchanging data among sub-models within the same time step. Further, one unstructured geophysical mesh is adopted for all three sub-models and the mesh allows the most flexible polygonal shapes with an arbitrary number of sides. The current flow sub-model is an extension of the existing river hydraulic model (SRH-2D), the wave sub-model follows the third-generation theory implemented in SWAN which solves the multi-frequency multi-direction wave action balance equation and the sediment sub-model is a new development adopting a general multi-size non-equilibrium sediment transport formulation but tailored for coastal applications. In this paper, the theory, the governing equations and the numerical methods are presented; the new model is then verified and validated using selected experimental cases. It is shown that the new model may predict the current–wave–sediment dynamics well. In addition, model sensitivity results are also discussed to shed light on future needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Riparian vegetation plays a fundamental role in alluvial channel evolution by modifying flow and sedimentation dynamics. To elucidate the roles of sediment supply, flow‐dependent transport capacity, and morphodynamic feedbacks on the evolution of emergent vegetation patches over a single hydrograph, we conducted two experiments with different reach‐scale sediment supplies: a high‐supply experiment (HSE) and low‐supply experiment (LSE). We measured flow velocities, bedload transport, and topographic changes around a full‐scale patch of live emergent willows in an outdoor laboratory flume. Erosion occurred in the patch‐adjacent channel areas irrespective of the sediment supply, whereas deposition within the patch interior was suppressed in the LSE and enhanced in the HSE. The magnitude of patch deposition in each experiment was controlled by the local sediment supply to the patch and local sediment mobility during each discharge in the hydrograph. The local sediment supply was affected by bed morphodynamics at the patch head, which modulated the reach‐scale sediment supply by redistributing the bedload in the channel. Sediment mobility within the patch was flow‐dependent and a function of velocity and turbulent kinetic energy. For different discharges, the velocity in the patch changed proportionally with the freestream velocity; however, the turbulent kinetic energy was more sensitive, being elevated compared with the freestream during high flows and inhibited at low flows. Therefore, deposition and erosion within vegetation patches are not simply functions of the reach‐scale sediment supply or patch flow characteristics, as is often assumed, but additionally depend on the local sediment supply to the patch interior. Plain Language Summary: Riparian vegetation in rivers and deltas is considered a primary cause of sediment deposition and channel stabilization. However, in the laboratory, we identified the physical mechanisms influencing sediment deposition and erosion and their change over a natural flow regime to illustrate that the same full‐sized willow patch can either enhance or reduce sediment deposition within the patch interior relative to the same channel without vegetation. The amount of sediment deposited in the vegetation patch depended on the velocity and turbulent kinetic energy of the water, which changed as the flow decreased. Additionally, the presence of a single vegetation patch fundamentally changed the character of the channel from depositional to erosional near the patch, indicating that more erosion occurred in adjacent channels than deposition within the patch. Deposition and erosion of the bed were also influenced by the amount of sediment supplied to the channel from upstream. This reach‐scale sediment supply was modified by a sediment mound that formed at the upstream end of the patch during high sediment supply to the channel. The mound redistributed the sediment transport within the channel and vegetation patch, revealing another physical mechanism influencing the spatial and temporal variability of bedload transport in vegetated channels. One of the most important processes for mass movement in coastal areas is sediment transport; it plays a significant role in coastal morphology changes. This manuscript focuses on the distribution and variation in surface-suspended sediments in the North Passage of the Yangtze Estuary. Field data on surface-suspended sediment concentration (SSSC) and suspended particle size (SPS) were collected at fifteen hydrological sites over a period of three years, from 2016 to 2018. The main objective was to analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of sediment and particle size and their potential impact on the estuary. Results indicate that extreme weather events have an influence on the hydrological conditions and sediment dynamics of the area. The intensity and range of SSSC variation in the North Passage seem to be determined by the magnitude of the current velocity, while the sediment load significantly impacted the sediment distribution pattern. This study demonstrates that surface sediment dynamics can be used as a basis for understanding the spatiotemporal variation in estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) in the North Passage of the Yangtze Estuary. River bifurcations are constituent components of multi-thread fluvial systems, playing a crucial role in their morphodynamic evolution and the partitioning of water and sediment. Although many studies have been directed at exploring bifurcation dynamics, the conditions under which avulsions occur, resulting in the complete abandonment of one branch, are still not well understood. To address this knowledge gap, we develop a novel 1D numerical model based on existing nodal point relations for sediment partitioning, which allows for the simulation of the morphodynamic evolution of a free bifurcation. Model results show that when the discharge asymmetry is so high that the shoaling branch does not transport sediments (partial avulsion conditions) the dominant branch undergoes significant degradation, leading to a higher inlet step between the bifurcates and further amplifying the discharge asymmetry. The degree of asymmetry is found to increase with the length of the downstream channels to the point that when they are sufficiently long, the shoaling branch is completely abandoned (full avulsion conditions). To complement our numerical findings, we also formulate a new analytical model that is able to reproduce the essential characteristics of the partial avulsion equilibrium, which enables us to identify the key parameters that control the transition between different configurations. In summary, this research sheds light on the fundamental processes that drive avulsion through the abandonment of river bifurcations. The insights gained from this study provide a foundation for further investigations and may offer valuable information for the design of sustainable river restoration projects. Based on measurements with the Swiss plate geophone system with a 1 min temporal resolution, bedload transport fluctuations were analysed as a function of the flow and transport conditions in the Swiss Erlenbach stream. The study confirms a finding from an earlier event-based analysis of the same bedload transport data, which showed that the disequilibrium ratio of measured to calculated transport rate (disequilibrium condition) influences the sediment transport behaviour. To analyse the transport conditions, the following elements were examined to characterise bedload transport fluctuations: (i) the autocorrelation coefficient of bedload transport rates as a function of lag time (memory effect), (ii) the critical discharge at the start and end of a transport event, (iii) the variability in the bedload transport rates, and (iv) a hysteresis index as a measure of the strength of bedload transport during the rising and falling limb of the hydrograph. This study underlines that above-average disequilibrium conditions, which are associated with a larger sediment availability on the streambed, generally have a stronger effect on subsequent transport conditions than below-average disequilibrium conditions, which are associated with comparatively less sediment availability on the streambed. The findings highlight the important roles of the sediment availability on the streambed, the disequilibrium ratio, and the hydraulic forcing in view of a better understanding of the bedload transport fluctuations in a steep mountain stream. One of the challenges in using Manning’s equation lies in accurately determining Manning’s roughness coefficient, especially due to sediment transport. The condition of sediment transport within a specific section of a river can be in equilibrium, meaning that the amount of sediment entering and exiting the segment is balanced or it can be in non-equilibrium, where there is an imbalance between the sediment entering and leaving the segment. Experiments were carried out in the laboratory to simulate both transport conditions, one involving sediment feeding (equilibrium condition) and the other without sediment feeding (non-equilibrium condition). A total of 180 mean velocity profiles were measured using an acoustic doppler velocimeter (ADV) in fixed and movable bed flows. The present experiment was combined with theoretical approaches to evaluate Manning’s coefficient in open channels under sediment transport-flow conditions and reach conclusive results. The shape of the velocity profile, u/U, for flows over a movable bed with sediment feeding is “slender” compared to those without sediment feeding. The presence of sediment transport affects the shape of the velocity profile, especially in the inner region, influencing Manning's roughness coefficient. This coefficient can be determined from two-point velocity measurements at z/H = 0.1 and 0.2 for fixed and movable bed flows with and without sediment feeding, respectively. The sediment-carrying capacity is reduced due to the rise of water level and the reduction of velocity, which leads to sedimentation in the reservoir, especially in front of the dam. Therefore, the storage capacity, flood control ability, and power generation are reduced, which affects reservoir functions and economic efficiency owing to reservoir sedimentation. The main measures to solve the problem of reservoir sedimentation include dredging in reservoir, reducing inflow sediment realized by soil protection and vegetation, as well as reservoir operation management such as "storing clear water and discharging muddy flow", and sediment discharging by heterogeneous flow, etc. In this paper, a normal funnel device with the smooth surface that has arbitrary order derivative is designed for discharging sediment in reservoir. The Euler two-phase flow near the normal funnel is numerically simulated with the Realizable k-e turbulence model on rectangle and O-type grids. Numerical model is tested by data on experiment flow that carried out in flume. The flow velocities, vorticities and sediment phase concentrations are analyzed under different boundary conditions. Research shows that velocity gradient is large in normal funnel, and phase concentration contours display the V-shaped asymmetrical distribution. Three large vorticity areas appear in the front edge, the left and right rear sides of the normal funnel. The large flow velocities and small resistance appear near the wall of the normal funnel. The average sediment concentrations at the output of the normal funnel are 0.462, 0.521 and 0.558 under three boundary conditions. The average vorticity is reduced by 25.8%-27.2%, the efficiency of discharging sediment remarkably increases with 15.2%-16.5% in contrast to the cone funnel. It demonstrates that the normal funnel is more favorable than the cone to smoothing flow, reducing energy dissipation, enhancing the capacity of sediment transport and discharging sediment outwards reservoir. The correlation between runoff and sediment challenges ecological preservation and sustainable development in the Yellow River Basin. An understanding of the key factors influencing variations in runoff and sediment transport in crucial river basins is essential for effective soil erosion management within the context of ecological and economic development. The Mann–Kendall test, Pettitt test, and Morlet wavelet analysis were employed in the Wuding River Basin to analyze the trends in runoff and sediment changes from 1960 to 2020. We explored the double cumulative curve method to assess the contribution rates of precipitation and human activities to the variability of runoff and sediment transport. We explored the primary factors driving the changes in runoff and sediment transport through random forest regression analysis. (1) From 1960 to 2020, annual precipitation in the Wuding River Basin increased minimally, while annual runoff and sediment transport decreased strongly with abrupt changes. Abrupt changes in annual runoff and sediment transport occurred in 1971 and 1979, respectively. (2) The relationship between runoff and sediment transport changed in approximately 1972 and 2000. The distribution of monthly runoff became more uniform during Periods II (1973–2001) and III (2002–2020) compared to that during the baseline period (1960–1972, Period I), while sediment transport became increasingly concentrated in the flood season. (3) During Period II, the contribution rates of climate and human activities to runoff and sediment transport were 11.94% and −14.5%, respectively, compared to the baseline period. During Period III, the contribution rates of climate and human activities to runoff and sediment transport were −11.9% and −17.7%, respectively. Human activities substantially reduced runoff and sediment, with greater impacts on sediment reduction. Climate weakly influenced basin sediment transport variations. (4) The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and grassland area extent had the greatest impact on runoff, while the NDVI and forest area extent affected sediment transport. Sediment transport serves as a link for material exchange between land and sea. Using sediment traps, we can observe the capture and transport processes of sediments. Based on the sediment particle size distribution characteristics in Jiaozhou Bay, this paper analyzes the influence of a newly designed 3D sediment trap on the water–sand two-phase flow process inside and outside a trap device during its operation. Meanwhile, under a certain concentration condition, a numerical formula model is researched and proposed to evaluate the impact of the device's structure, the environmental flow speed, and the particle size on particle capture efficiency. This model is based on the CFD-DPM coupling in Fluent 2021R1 software, and the particle filtration process is solved using a combination of porous media and UDF functions. Finally, by analyzing the distribution of sediment movement in the fluid domain, two concepts, namely the percentage of particles entering the tube and the effective capture rate, are proposed. Confluences are dynamic morphological nodes in all river networks. In mountain regions, they are influenced by hydraulic and sedimentary processes occurring in steep channels during extreme events in small watersheds. Sediment transport in the tributary channel and aggradation in the confluence can be massive, potentially causing overbank flooding and sedimentation into adjacent settlement areas. Previous works dealing with confluences have been mainly focused on lowland regions, or if focused on mountain areas, the sediment concentrations and channel gradients were largely under-representative of mountain river conditions. The presented work contributes to filling this research gap with 45 experiments using a large-scale physical model. Geometric model parameters, applied grain size distribution, and the considered discharges represent the conditions at 135 confluences in South Tyrol (Italy) and Tyrol (Austria). The experimental program allowed for a comprehensive analysis of the effects of (i) the confluence angle, (ii) the tributary gradient, (iii) the channel discharges, and (iv) the tributary sediment concentration. Results indicate, in contrast to most research dealing with confluences, that in the presence of intense tributary sediment supply and a small tributary to main channel discharge ratio (0.1), the confluence angle does not have a decisive effect on confluence morphology. Adjustments to the tributary channel gradient yielded the same results. A reoccurring range of depositional geomorphic units was observed where a deposition cone transitioned to a bank-attached bar. The confluence morphology and tributary channel gradient rapidly adjusted, tending towards an equilibrium state to accommodate both water discharges and the sediment load from the tributary. Statistical analyses demonstrated that confluence morphology was controlled by the combined channel discharge and the depositional or erosional extents by the sediment concentration. Applying the conclusions drawn from lowland confluence dynamics could misrepresent depositional and erosional patterns and the related flood hazard at mountain river confluences. The observation and analysis of sediment transport in oceans is an important means for the protection of the marine environment, resource development, construction engineering, and element cycling. However, traditional methods of observing sediment transport are either limited by the range of the instruments used or their own observational attributes, such that they cannot be used to accurately detect and analyze the process of transport of marine sediment. A 3D sediment trap has been proposed to compensate for the shortcomings of the various monitoring tools in our team, but no mature method for the analytical inversion of the data obtained from this device has been developed to date. In this paper, we developed analytical methods to invert sediment transport processes using corrected capture efficiency, sample inversion, and transport flux analysis. Through an annular flume test, we measured the turbidity, pressure, and particle size of the water stream and substituted them into the proposed analytical equations, thus verifying the applicability of the analytical methods. We used the slice experiment of the time series of the sediment samples, to determine the validity of the sample inversion, and establish the relationship between the particle size and concentration of the captured samples. We performed restoration tests on the process of sediment transport to establish a set of methods of flux analysis based on the velocity and turbidity of flow. And finally corrected for capture efficiency by particle size. The combination of analytical methods and 3D sediment trap could provide technological support for investigating the evolution of the sea, ecological cycle, and marine engineering. Bedload transport in a river is a deeply analyzed problem, with many methodologies available in the literature. However, most of the existing methods were developed for reaches of rivers rather than for confluences and are suitable for a particular type of material, which makes them very inaccurate in cases where the sediments are comprised of a mix of different types of soil. This study considers the effect of two different bed sediment sizes, gravel and sand, in relation to bed load transport in a confluence. Five well-known and validated equations (namely Meyer-Peter and Müller, Parker + Engelund and Hansen, Ackers and White, and Yang) are applied to the case study of the Tagus–Alberche rivers confluence (in Talavera de la Reina, Spain), where main and tributary rivers transport different materials (sand and gravel). Field works in the area of the confluence were conducted, and a set of alluvial samples were collected and analyzed. The previously mentioned methods were employed to analyze the geomorphology in the confluence area and downstream of it under different flooding scenarios, concluding different trends in terms of deposition/erosion in the area under historic flooding scenarios. When the trends show erosion, all methods are very consistent in terms of numerical predictions. However, the results present high disparity in the estimated values when the predictions suggest deposition, with Parker + Engelund and Hansen yielding the highest volumes and Meyer-Peter and Müller the lowest (the latter being around 1% of the former). Yang and Ackers and White predict deposits in the same range in all cases (around 15% of Parker and Engelund Hansen). Yang's formula was found to be suitable for the confluences of rivers with different materials, allowing for the estimation of sediment transport for different grain sizes. Alpine glaciers are rapidly retreating due to global warming and this has been associated with enhanced supply of subglacially derived sediment to downstream environments. We present the first high frequency quantitative record on how the signal of sediment exported from an Alpine glacier is filtered by its proglacial forefield. The data, covering two climatically distinct glacier melt seasons, show that the signal of subglacial bedload export is strongly filtered over short distances, unlike suspended load whose signal is less impacted. The reason is related to the interplay of short particle advection lengths with strong morphodynamic forcing. The subglacial sediment export signal is thus rapidly replaced by one combining (a) the local forcing by stream hydraulics and (b) the reworking of the proglacial braid plain itself. These findings have implications for estimating subglacial erosion rates, natural hazard mitigation, sediment management for hydropower plants and ecological succession related to rapid glacier retreat. Plain Language Summary: Alpine glaciers have been retreating at increasing rates since the early 20th century due to the current climate warming. As a consequence, new, powerful and rapidly changing rivers have developed in the newly emerged terrain in front of shrinking glaciers (i.e., proglacial forefields). These environments are known to be among the most rapidly changing landscapes on Earth. In this study we present the first combined high frequency quantitative data on sediment export from an Alpine glacier for two melt seasons with very different climatic conditions. Results show that the low potential transport distances of particles traveling on the river bed together with the continuously changing shape of these streams, rapidly modify the glacier‐dictated export signal (i.e., subglacial sediment evacuation rates in time). For sediment transported in suspension in the river, that loss of information is less evident. These findings are important for the understanding of how much, when, and which kind of sediment are delivered to the populated places downstream in the valleys, in order to mitigate natural hazards, but also for sediment management in hydropower plants and ecological succession in the context of rapid glacier retreat. The results are also key to improving estimation of glacial erosion rates. The measurement of cosmogenic nuclide (CN) concentrations in riverine sediment has provided breakthroughs in our understanding of landscape evolution. Yet, linking this detrital CN signal and relief evolution is based on hypotheses that are not easy to verify in the field. Models can be used to explore the statistics of CN concentrations in sediment grains. In this work, we present a coupling between the landscape evolution model Cidre and a model of the CN concentration in distinct grains. These grains are exhumed and detached from the bedrock and then transported in the sediment to the catchment outlet with temporary burials and travel according to the erosion–deposition rates calculated spatially in Cidre. The concentrations of various CNs can be tracked in these grains. Because the CN concentrations are calculated in a limited number of grains, they provide an approximation of the whole CN flux. Therefore, this approach is limited by the number of grains that can be handled in a reasonable computing time. Conversely, it becomes possible to record part of the variability in the erosion–deposition processes by tracking the CN concentrations in distinct grains using a Lagrangian approach. We illustrate the robustness and limitations of this approach by deriving the catchment-average erosion rates from the mean 10Be concentration of grains leaving a synthetic catchment and comparing them with the erosion rates calculated from sediment flux, for different uplift scenarios. We show that the catchment-average erosion rates are approximated to within 5 % uncertainty in most of the cases with a limited number of grains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Much of the world's population lives close to coastlines and this proximity is becoming increasingly impactful because of sea-level rise (SLR). Barrier islands and backbarrier saltmarshes, which comprise >10% of these coasts, are particularly susceptible. To better understand this risk, we model backbarrier morphologic and hydrodynamic evolution over a 200-year period of SLR, incorporating an erodible bed and a range of grain sizes. Here, we show that reduction in intertidal area creates negative feedback, shifting transport of coarse sediment (silt and sand) through the inlet from net export to net import. Imposing a modest marsh vertical accretion rate decreases the period of silt and sand import to 40 years (years 90 to 130) before being exported again. Clay is continuously exported thereby decreasing inorganic deposition on marshes and threatening their sustainability. Simulated marsh loss increases tidal prism and the volume of sand contained in ebb deltas, depleting coastal sand resources. Barrier islands and backbarrier saltmarshes are particularly threatened by sea level rise. Mixed siliciclastic and carbonate sediments are common in the stratigraphic record, but fully homogenised mixes are not. Many occurrences of mixed sediment sequences are dominated by end‐members with stacking of 'nearly pure' lithfacies (e.g. cyclothems containing alternating sandstone, limestone and coal units). The Plio‐Pleistocene sediments within south‐west Florida provide insights into the occurrence of fully homogenised siliciclastic/carbonate deposits. In all defined environments from lagoon to supratidal to inner tidal to beach to offshore to coral reef, quartz sand coexists with carbonates. Perhaps the key feature that allowed full homogenisation of the sediments within all facies and subfacies was the relatively shallow water (<10 m), which facilitated mixing during low‐order eustatic sea‐level events and storms. However, four factors contributed to the full homogenisation of the sediment types without termination or inhibition of carbonate organism growth. These factors are (1) the shallow water allowing wave‐driven sediment transport (all environments within the wave orbital depth), (2) close proximity and perhaps irregular nature of the depositional environment boundaries, (3) low influx rate of quartz sand via longshore transport, and (4) the lack of significant terrigenous mud transport into the system. Mixing processes at the large‐scale included movement of sediments from one depositional environment to another during storms, mixing along facies boundaries, and in situ mixing within autochthonous and parautochthonous mollusc death assemblages. At the smaller scale, mixing occurred by bioturbation and diagenetic dissolution of carbonate skeletal grains during minor high sea‐level stands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper used dynamic image analysis (DIA) to analyze the grain size and shape data of beach surface sediments in Bao'ding Bay, eastern Hainan Island, China, and explored the effects of sediment transport modes and beach morphology on the grain size–shape trend curves. This paper adopted a method of combining grain size cumulative frequency curves and grain size–shape trend curves to identify three sediment transport modes: suspension, saltation, and traction, and analyzed the characteristics of the grain size–shape trend curves under different beach morphologies (reflective, intermediate, and dissipative). This paper found that the grain size–shape trend curves can effectively indicate the sediment transport modes and improve the accuracy of subpopulation division; the grain size–shape trend curves showed different distribution characteristics in the cross-shore and longshore directions, which are closely related to the beach's morphology and sediment transport direction. Incipient motion has been a topic of investigation by researchers, engineers and scientists for more than a century. The main approach for studying sediment entrainment has been the static approach that uses temporal and spatial averaged flow parameters like bed shear stress and stream power to link them indirectly to sediment entrainment. Recent research outputs have shed light on the important role of turbulent fluctuations in the sediment transport process. It is suggested that the approach of using temporal and spatial averaged parameters fails to account for the dynamic and probabilistic nature of the entrainment process, as inherited by flow turbulence. This has led to the introduction of the only dynamic criteria in the literature for studying sediment entrainment, namely the impulse and energy criteria. These criteria take into account both the magnitude and duration of the turbulent flow event used for assessing the conditions that can result in sediment entrainment. In light of this, this work aims to assess whether there is a trend in terms of the type of flow structures that occur in sequence before and after the occurrences of the flow impulses that have resulted in the coarse particle's entrainment. To achieve this, we conducted a well-controlled laboratory experiment to investigate the incipient motion of a 7 cm diameter instrumented particle. Five runs of the experiment were performed at flowrates close to the threshold of motion. The instrumented particle was equipped with micro-electro-mechanical sensors (MEMS) to accurately measure its inertial dynamics and detect motion. The sensors recorded entrainment events, and these events were stochastically linked to the impulses occurring for the tested flow conditions. Quadrant analysis was used to investigate the type of flow structures that occurred before, during and after the occurrence of quadrant events with an impulse above the critical impulse. The findings herein associate coarse particle entrainments with energetic impulses linked primarily to sweep events (Q4) and secondarily, sequence of sweeps (Q4) and ejections (Q1). Sufficient water is pivotal in maintaining the stability of boundaries in sandy river systems. However the current methodologies employed for computing the water demand for sediment transport in rivers frequently neglect this component. This research utilizes data spanning 1960 to 2020 from seven principal hydrological stations located in the lower Yellow River to establish the correlation between key factors pertaining to the sediment transport capacity of flow. A closed equation system was established based on the principles of river dynamics to solve unknown hydraulic parameters. Finding a suitable hydraulic geometric relationship equation as a supplementary equation is a key step in constructing a closed equation system. The findings indicate that sediment transport water demands are 71.79, 133.24, 226.89, 286.12, and 313.6 × 108 m3, respectively, when sediment inflow is at 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 × 108 t, with a bankfull discharge of 4000 m3/s. As the sediment inflow diminishes and the unit water demand for sediment transport increases, the sediment transport efficiency of the lower Yellow River reduces. The outcomes of this research can serve as a foundation for the joint operation of the Yellow River's main and branch reservoirs, as well as for designing water resource allocation schemes within the basin. Offshore anthropogenic activities such as the installation of Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) developments and sediment extraction for marine aggregates have been shown to disrupt current flow, wave propagation, and sediment transport pathways, leading to potential environmental instability. Due to the complexity of the interconnected sediment transport pathways in the south-western Irish Sea combined with an increase in planned anthropogenic activities, the assessment of this risk is imperative for the development of a robust marine spatial plan. Subsequently, this study uses two-dimensional morphological modelling to build upon previous studies to assess the dependency of Arklow Bank's local sediment transport regime on external sediment sources. Additionally, scenario modelling is used to identify vulnerable areas of this offshore linear sand bank to wind and wave-forcing and to examine the nature of this impact. A sediment budget is estimated for Arklow Bank, whereby seven source and nine sink pathways are identified. New evidence to support the exchange of sediment between offshore sand banks and offshore independent sand wave fields is also provided. The areas of the bank most vulnerable to changes in external sediment sources and the addition of wind- and wave-induced flow are analogous. These high vulnerability zones (HVZs) align with regions of residual cross-flow under pure current conditions. The restriction of sediment sources off the southern extent of Arklow Bank impacts erosion and accretion patterns in the mid- and northern sections of the bank after just one lunar month of simulation. Where tidal current is the primary driver of sand bank morphodynamics, wind- and wave-induced flow is shown to temporarily alter sediment distribution patterns. Wind and wave-induced flow can both accelerate and decelerate the east-west fluctuation of the upper slopes of the bank, yet the nature of this impact is inconsistent due to the misalignment of the directionality of these two forces.
